Significant changes to bus services to and from Exmouth to Exeter as well as within the area of Brixington being introduced this month have sparked concern among local residents, but assurances have been given by Stagecoach that the new routes will be reviewed.

Last month, the bus operator announced vast number of changes are being implemented across Devon's bus network due to a review of congestion and roadworks that is impacting bus services. Stagecoach have said its new timetables are aimed at improve the reliability and punctuality of buses.

All the new timetables will be in force by Monday, April 14. Among the controversial changes is to Service 57 from Exeter to Brixington via Topsham and Exmouth. Significant changes to the route and timetable are being introduced.

According to Stagecoach, due to low demand for travel across Exmouth , the route will be separated in Exmouth Town Centre to ensure passengers will benefit from a more reliable and punctual service. Service 57 will operate between Exeter Bus Station and Exmouth Parade only. The section of route between Exmouth Parade and Brixington will be covered by a new Service 99.

During the early morning and late evening, some Service 57 journeys will continue to operate as new Service 99 and at these times, a through service to Brixington will continue to be provided.

The Monday to Saturday daytime frequency will be adjusted to operate every 20 minutes. There are no changes to the frequency of buses during the evening or on Sunday and Public Holidays. A small number of school day only journeys will be removed from the timetable.

It has prompted Brixington resident Trudi Cotton to launch a campaign opposing the changes. She was out collecting petition signatures last Saturday, March 30, in the Brixington shop area for three hours.

Her concern is the impact it will have on bus users, particularly the elderly and disabled, and that services will only run from Brixington to Exeter in the early morning or evening, meaning people who wish to take this route during the day will have to change in Exmouth. Signs on bus stops have reportedly already been changed.

Trudi said: "There are going to be through buses if these changes happen. You would get on Service 99 and its number will change in Exmouth town to Service 57, but these through buses only run in the morning and evening.

"The last through bus in the morning is the 7.38am (Pines Road) and 7.45am (Broadmead shops ) which gets into Exeter Bus Station at 8.52am. The first one which goes straight through on the return journey is the 6pm (Exeter Bus Station) which gets in at 7.05pm (Pines Road) and 7.11pm (Broadmead).

"These are based on the timetables which I received from Stagecoach and I advise you to check them carefully if these changes go ahead. I suggest that If Stagecoach can organise through buses in the morning and evening, they can organise them all day.

"It would be much easier for everyone, including the bus drivers. It would massively improve things for their disabled and elderly passengers who would find the change of buses hard, and those who need to go directly to the RD&E."

In response to Trudi sharing details on social media about her petition on Exmouth Community UK, one bus user said: "It's worked for years without difficulty so I cannot understand why the changes? I have been using this service for over 10 years to get to my hospital appointments and now it's been taken away.

"I can't even get off one bus and on to another without struggling to get round the corner to another bus stop then waiting for another bus, then the same again on a return journey. I dread to think how long it's going to take me to get there and back."

Another resident who was unsure about the changes said: "I see the pros and cons. There should be a through ticket to and from Exeter for all of Exmouth, allowing for bus changes in town to reach the final destination.

"The 'new' route needs to have enough capacity around Exmouth, as mentioned, and the timetable should allow enough time for all to change buses if wanting to reach Exeter. It could be good but it needs more thought."

In support of the changes, a bus user said:" I didn't like this at first as it would affect me, but having thought about it for a bit I think it's a good idea as a service running from town to Brixington would be more reliable than waiting for buses that have been held up between Exeter and Exmouth."

Stagecoach has explained the reasons behind the changes and has said it will keep the new routes under review to ensure it achieves its aims.

A spokesperson for Stagecoach South West said: “We always welcome feedback from customers on the routes we offer. The Stagecoach network is continuously under review so that we can best serve the local community.

"As with many new services there will be a period of change and adaptation as it becomes established and we appreciate this can cause some frustration for service users. Following a review of data and surveys on reliability, punctuality and passenger flows and demand, changes to the Service 57 route and timetable are introduced to ensure passengers will benefit from a more reliable and punctual service.

"Service 57 will operate between Exeter Bus Station and Exmouth Parade only. The section of route between Exmouth Parade and Brixington will be covered by a new Service 99. Service 99 will operate from Rolle Street in Exmouth Town Centre and will operate a circular route serving Brixington.

"We want to reassure bus passengers that while the service becomes fully mobilised, we will review punctuality data and will make any changes that may be required. Our primary focus remains to serve the community, getting residents and commuters where they need to go."

Concerns over Service 57 have already been raised by East Devon MP Simon Jupp. It is his belief that the service has been heavily impacted by trial roadblock schemes in Exeter.

He said: "I will continue to work with Stagecoach to improve the frequency of bus services connecting Exmouth to Exeter and villages in between. Unfortunately, increased congestion around Exeter has significantly contributed to timetable changes by Stagecoach.

"The Heavitree and Whipton Low Traffic Neighbourhood project is wreaking havoc and leading to major delays to local bus services. Despite my letter calling for Exeter’s Labour-run HATOC to scrap their traffic experiment immediately, the Labour-led group have failed to act.

"The sheer arrogance of the public reply to my letter by Labour councillor Danny Barnes, HATOC chair, demonstrates they’ve dug in so deep they don’t want to lose face ahead of local elections by scrapping it. I hope local residents deliver their verdict on Labour’s absence of leadership next month.”

A school bus was involved in a crash Monday morning in Salisbury Township.

Township police said in a news release that the three-vehicle crash happened about 7:30 a.m. along East Emmaus Avenue near the Arts Academy Charter Middle School. An SUV involved in the crash rolled over. The driver was not injured, police said.

No students were on the bus and no students were injured, according to the department.

Anyone with information on the crash is asked to contact police at 610-797-1447.

Police urged caution when driving near schools.

Next time you get on the BruinBus , it may be Marie Ephform or Melvina Okoh greeting you from the driver's seat, making your trip comfortable, timely, and safe. Meet two women keeping Bruins and campus visitors moving around at UCLA and in Westwood Village.

How long have you been at UCLA?

Marie: I've been here for 16 years now!

Melvina: I've been an operator for 6 months.

Describe a typical day. 

Marie: A typical day is just riding along and having passengers, on sunny days, rainy days, and being there for the students, answering questions, and actually being like a therapist to them also. 

Melvina: My typical day starts early, arriving at work, clocking in, and getting ready to go out into the community.

How does it make you feel helping passengers navigate UCLA and get where they need to be?

Marie: It makes me feel great  –  anything people need, I'm here! 

Melvina: I really like this job because we're helping students, staff, and faculty get to their destinations promptly and safely.

Do you have a favorite route? 

Marie: I like Macgowan Hall (North Campus) where the Sculpture Garden is. It's really nice out there.

Melvina: I don't have a particular favorite, they are all special to me because it's a different group of people for different stops.

Why should people ride the BruinBus? 

Marie: We keep UCLA moving! 

Melvina: You should get on my bus because I'm very calm, very kind, I speak to each person that gets on, and I tell everyone to have a good day.  I'm a people person, and I like to send out positive affirmations because you never know who you will find and how their day is going.

Best thing about transportation at UCLA?

Marie: We have electric buses here! 

Melvina: It really excites me to help Bruins and visitors get to their destination. It lights my heart. I once had a lady get on my bus who didn't speak English; she cared about me and I cared about her. That really is the highlight, to make sure people arrive safe.

'A blessing no one was hurt': Collapsed tree nearly splits school bus in half in Mississippi

A school bus driver in Mississippi made an unexpected stop after a tree fell and nearly split the vehicle in half.

The driver finished dropping off the last child of the day when the tree halted his route Wednesday afternoon, according to Jones County School District Superintendent B.R. Jones. He was not injured.

The employee was driving around 20 to 25 miles per hour when the bus suddenly stopped on the county line of Jones and Jasper counties in southern Mississippi, Jones said.

"As he looked up he saw that in the rearview mirror, of course, after hearing all the confusion and commotion behind that there was actually a tree about midway had fallen into the bus," Jones told USA TODAY on Friday.

The oak tree severely damaged the vehicle, ripping through the roof and crushing the inside, he added.

Bus was just purchased few months ago

Jones said the district had just purchased the bus a few months before the incident. The district has spare school buses to use and has plans to replace the destroyed one.

As for the tree itself, Jones explained that it was not rotten by any means but somehow collapsed with enough force to cause significant damage.

"It was just so out of the ordinary. You never anticipate or even think something like that could occur. And it's just a blessing that no one was injured and no one was hurt," he said.

The driver is doing well after the incident and is grateful for the "the outpouring of support" he received from the community, Jones added.

Is it cheaper to take the bus or train from Vancouver to Seattle in 2024?

While you might think the train from Vancouver to Seattle costs more than the bus , prices have increased off the rails. 

When Flixbus launched its bus route connecting Seattle to Vancouver , prices started at a jaw-dropping $17.99 for a one-way trip.

But prices have increased on the popular route since it launched, putting costs on par with other modes of transportation. 

Many people also prefer to take the train since the experience is a bit smoother but some dates might still cost more for the trip. Either way, the train and the bus are cheaper than flying between the cities.

Flights between Vancouver International Airport (YVR) and Seattle International Airport (SEA) are surprisingly steep considering the distance, with one-way flights starting at $181. 

There are a few things to consider when choosing between the bus and the train.

Train from Vancouver to Seattle 

The  Amtrak Cascades passenger train offers service from Vancouver across the Canada-U.S. border to numerous cities across Washington and Oregon. 

One of the most popular routes takes passengers from  Vancouver Pacific Central Station  to  King Street Station  in Seattle, Washington. Prices on these trips start for as little as $39.99 for a one-way trip, but prices may increase during popular travel times, such as mid-day or over holidays (see slide two). 

There are four daily round-trip trains between Portland and Seattle on eight trains.

Guests who purchase the value ticket pay the lowest price and must pay a 25 per cent fee if they cancel. No changes are permitted on the low-cost tickets, either. 

Guests who purchase the flex fare for an additional $3 receive a full refund if they cancel and will not pay a fee to change the ticket. 

Business class guests will enjoy extra legroom with footrests but can expect to pay nearly double the cost ($68 versus value at $39.99).

Guests may also disembark on the journey at other destinations along the 18-stop Pacific Northwest itinerary, including in Bellingham, Washington, and Portland and Eugene in Oregon. 

In 2026, guests will be able to enjoy riding the  popular route on a new fleet of Amtrak trains.

Bus from Vancouver to Seattle 

One-way tickets from Pacific Central Station in Vancouver to several locations in Seattle start for as little as $39.99 with Flixbus .

While you may not always be able to get the lowest fare, there are typically options costing just over $40 on numerous dates at non-peak travel times (see slide three).

On average, tickets for the Vancouver-to-Seattle route cost $48.99, according to Flixbus. 

When you book your ticket, ensure that the final Seattle stop works with your itinerary as there will be several listed as options, including the University of Washington 1100 NE Campus Pkwy, Seattle (6th Ave S & S Lane St), the SEA airport, and the Seattle Bus Station (503 S Royal Brougham Way). 

The bus route from Vancouver to Seattle covers 228 km and takes about three hours and 20 minutes to complete. However, this time can vary based on current traffic conditions. 

The first bus is at 7:20 a.m., with the last bus leaving at 6 p.m. with multiple trips in between.

Other popular routes from Vancouver include Bellingham, Portland, Everett, Washington, Medford-Ashland, Phoenix-Tempe, Washington, D.C., New York, Mount Vernon, and Tacoma.
