louis vuiton history

The history of Louis Vuitton is a fascinating saga that parallels the evolution of modern style and elegance. Iconic designers and exciting collaborations have kept timeless styles alive with fresh perspectives and creative reimagining.

Exploring Louis Vuitton’s background gives us a deeper appreciation for the status the brand has achieved. Throughout the Louis Vuitton history timeline, the design house’s steadfast commitment to exemplary quality and artisanship remains the company’s bedrock. As we navigate the pivotal moments in the history of LV, we celebrate an enduring legacy of elegance and take a peek into the malletier’s future.

The Genesis: Louis Vuitton's Early Years

history of lv

Louis Vuitton's history began in 1837. At that time, a 16-year-old Louis Vuitton arrived in Paris after traveling 280 miles by foot from his birthplace, Anchay, France. His goal was to become an apprentice to Monsieur Maréchal and learn to become a malletier (trunk maker). For 17 years, he perfected his skills, crafting bespoke trunks and traveling boxes for French nobility. He was devoted to creating durable, waterproof products that matched practical value with elegance. The trunks he crafted were not mere storage solutions but timeless treasures that protected personal belongings during travel by steamboat and horse-drawn carriages.

lv 1901

The year Louis Vuitton founded his own atelier was 1854, and the location was 4 Rue Neuve-des-Capucines. In 1858, Vuitton rocked the trunk-making world with his introduction of a flat-topped trunk. This was a radical departure from the norm, where luxury trunks were built with rounded tops so rainfall would roll off. The new Vuitton trunk featured waterproof, lightweight, and highly durable Trianon canvas and a flat top facilitating stacking and easier storage. The innovative spirit, elegant design aesthetic, and dedication to exquisite artisanship remained hallmarks throughout Louis Vuitton's history.

Craftsmanship and Quality: The LV Signature

As the malletier to Empress Eugénie de Montijo, wife of Napoleon III, Louis Vuitton gained a reputation for unmatched artisanship and quality. The history of Louis Vuitton entwines a profound respect for artistry with a perpetual quest for making the pragmatic beautiful. When Vuitton introduced the stackable, flat-topped trunks crafted from durable Trianon canvas, he displayed an intimate understanding of the needs of travelers. The flat top made it easier to load multiple trunks into the same space. The coated canvas was waterproof, resisted wear, and was far lighter than the leather used by his contemporaries.

This relentless pursuit of quality production and innovative problem-solving animates every chapter of Louis Vuitton's history.

Historic Milestones: Landmark Events in LV's Journey

Louis Vuitton’s story reflects innovation, collaboration, and a determination to redefine elegance. The following are just some of the milestones in Louis Vuitton’s history.

  • 1837: The history of LV begins with the 16-year-old Louis Vuitton arriving in Paris by foot, seeking an apprenticeship with Monsieur Maréchal, a renowned trunk-maker.
  • 1854: After 17 years, Louis Vuitton founded his eponymous atelier at 4 Rue Neuve-des-Capucines.
  • 1858: The introduction of the flat-topped, stackable trunk forever changed luxury travel.
  • 1890: Georges Vuitton, the only son of Louis Vuitton, introduced an innovative spring buckle locking mechanism that foiled the would-be thieves who preyed on luxury trunks. Vuitton challenged master escapist Harry Houdini to pick his unpickable lock. The stunt proved the lock’s value, and it has been a signature of the atelier ever since.
  • 1896: Georges Vuitton introduced the iconic LV Monogram Canvas, which has come to symbolize the luxury and unmatched artisanship of Louis Vuitton.
  • 1914 : The Louis Vuitton building opened on the Champs-Elysées as the largest travel goods store in the world.
  • 1915: Renowned fashion icon Coco Chanel requested a bespoke Louis Vuitton handbag. It was the first LV venture into small leather goods and LV accessories . In the 1930s, Chanel gave her permission to reproduce the bag, which became known as the Alma, one of the design house’s most beloved styles.
  • 1930: This was a big year in Louis Vuitton's history, as both the LV Keepall and Speedy bags were introduced.
  • 1965: Legendary actress Audrey Hepburn requested a smaller version of the Speedy bag, and the Speedy 25 was born.
  • 1987: The formation of Louis Vuitton Moët Hennessy (LVMH) united multiple luxury brands, including Tiffany & Co, Fendi, Bulgari, Givenchy, Celine, and TAG Heuer, among others.
  • 1996: Marking the 100th anniversary of the iconic monogram canvas, Louis Vuitton worked with select designers, inviting them to create unique luggage pieces.
  • 1997: Marc Jacobs is named creative director for Louis Vuitton. His influential reign launched the first LV ready-to-wear line and a jewelry line and paved the way for several exciting designer collaborations that each reimagined the LV monogram.
  • 2001: Collaboration with Stephen Sprouse produced the Graffiti Speedy.
  • 2003: Collaboration with Takashi Murakami produced the Cherry Blossom.
  • 2004: Louis Vuitton fine jewelry was introduced.
  • 2009: LV high jewelry was introduced with two patented diamond petal cuts.
  • 2013: Nicolas Ghesquière took over for Marc Jacobs.

Louis Vuitton’s history chronicles the evolution of one of the world’s greatest design houses. At every turn, the commitment to quality and an innovative design aesthetic have made Louis Vuitton a leader in luxury for nearly 200 years.

Louis Vuitton Today: A Legacy Continued

a journey through time louis vuitton

The evolution of Louis Vuitton from a humble trunk-maker’s workshop to an internationally renowned luxury design house is nothing short of awe-inspiring. Old-world artisanship and a constant quest for innovation have both played significant roles in Louis Vuitton's history. The atelier continuously produces pieces with timeless quality and style while pioneering fresh, modern designs.

The Future of Louis Vuitton: Innovations and Trends

Louis Vuitton’s history speaks of a commitment to quality, and its future is dedicated to sustainability. Addressing a crucial issue in fashion today, the company plans to achieve a 100% eco-design across its product line by 2025. It aims to reduce greenhouse emissions by a whopping 55% by 2030.

With the history of Louis Vuitton as a guide, we can be confident the atelier will reach its impressive goals while continuing to produce exquisite pieces. The luxury brand has replaced its iconic coated canvas with Econyl, a sustainable, durable, and lightweight nylon created entirely from ocean and landfill waste. This featherweight material graces the OnTheGo, the Speedy, and the Multi Pochette, among others, as part of the LV commitment to greater sustainability.

The designer’s ability to blend functionality with unparalleled elegance has been seen throughout Louis Vuitton's history and continues to shape fashion today. Invest in this enduring legacy. Louis Vuitton Tambour Twenty, A Journey Through Time

In just two decades of watchmaking, Louis Vuitton has proven its deep passion for watchmaking, and has made quite a name for itself within the industry. In 2002, the Maison unveiled a watch like none other: the Tambour. Bold and innovative, it was recognisable at a glance with its unprecedented shape, its round case sculpted from a block of metal, and its signature applied horns. There was a new watch in town… This launch opened up the doors to the closed world of watchmaking for Louis Vuitton.

Louis Vuitton Tambour Twenty

Pushing the boundaries Having become a symbol of Louis Vuitton’s watch collection over the years, the Tambour has seen different expressions over time, all the while staying true to the Maison’s DNA: a devotion to the Art of Travel and bold creativity that combines technological innovation with exceptional craftsmanship. With the Tambour Spin Time in 2009, it even reinvented how time is displayed, with rotating cubes instead of clock hands and indexes. In 2011, La Fabrique du Temps in Geneva and its master watchmakers, Michel Navas and Enrico Barbasini, joined Louis Vuitton’s adventure to create some truly exceptional timepieces.

Launched in 2014, the Tambour Evolution bore strong, masculine lines with its 45 mm diameter case, whereas the 2016 Tambour Slim, in a Tourbillon version, appeared sleek and discrete on the wrist. With the Tambour Moon model launched in 2017, the Tambour kept its signature round case while reversing its caseband’s curve. Then, in 2020, the Tambour Curve quite literally pushed the boundaries of timekeeping, with its titanium and Carbostratum® case; its surprisingly elongated convex curve, and its phenomenal flying tourbillon calibre, stamped with the prestigious Geneva Seal (Poinçon de Genève) – a perfect match between high-complication movement and bold creativity.

In 2021, the Tambour Carpe Diem received the Audacity Prize at the Grand Prix d’Horlogerie de Genève, while the Tambour Street won the Diver’s Watch Prize.

Louis Vuitton’s watchmaking has also been closely linked to the connected watch. With this technology, the future is now. In 2022, the Maison has already unveiled the 3rd generation of its Tambour Horizon Light Up model. This connected watch is simply revolutionary. Not only is it bright, travel-friendly and playful, but it is also entirely customisable, thus staying true to the Maison’s DNA.

A Twenty for twenty years In just two decades, Louis Vuitton has proven its legitimacy on the watchmaking scene. Over the years, the Tambour’s timeless and iconic stylistic signature has combined with all kinds of watches, from the more classic types to the most complex movements. Depending on the wearer’s wishes, it has been masculine, feminine, GMT, diver-friendly, and has even equipped itself with a flying tourbillon and a minute repeater, bearing witness to the high-end watchmaking expertise of Louis Vuitton’s artisans. To celebrate the watch that made all of this possible – the iconic Tambour –, La Fabrique du Temps Louis Vuitton has created an exclusive anniversary model: the Tambour Twenty. The limited edition of 200 pieces pays tribute to the original Tambour by reprising the iconic codes that made it an icon of watchmaking design.

“Watch enthusiasts will recognise all the features that made the Tambour’s design so unique. While this limited edition is a true concentrate of everything that made this watch stand out, it also boasts brand new features that will set it apart for collectors,” says Jean Arnault, Marketing and Development Director for Louis Vuitton watches. “To me, as well as celebrating our anniversary, this watch also paves the way for many future decades of fine watchmaking, staying true to Louis Vuitton’s values of creativity, craftsmanship and excellence.”

Louis Vuitton Tambour Twenty

The Tambour Twenty boasts the same unique and instantly recognisable case, a nod to the watch’s tambour component which, in English, is known as the “drum”. The timepiece stands out with its deep, flared shape, which gives it a robust and reliable feel. On its iconic 41.5 mm diameter case are the twelve letters that make up the name “Louis Vuitton” across the numbers and indexes, just like on the 2002 version. This collector’s edition also features a brown sun-brushed dial, along which the chronograph’s long yellow hand glides – a nod to the thread historically used in leatherwork. The two elegant sub-dials also make a comeback.

The Tambour Twenty, which is water-resistant to 100 metres, keeps time with a LV277 high-frequency movement based on the iconic Zenith El Primero, the first automatic chronograph ever. This movement with 22-carat gold rotor and 50 hours of power reserve is exact to the tenth of a second. A true collector’s item produced in only 200 models – as specified by its engraved caseback – the Tambour Twenty is also available with another iconic Louis Vuitton staple: a miniature trunk in Monogram canvas. A tribute to Louis Vuitton’s travel legacy, clients can continue to protect their most precious belongings in cases that will stand the test of time…

Said time, however, is not likely to have passed before Louis Vuitton’s legitimacy as a watchmaker is well and truly established…

September 15, 2023 Louis Vuitton: A Journey Through Time

In the realm of luxury fashion, few names evoke as much reverence and allure as Louis Vuitton. With its iconic LV monogram, this French luxury house has captured the imaginations of fashionistas around the world. But where did it all begin? Let's embark on a journey through the illustrious history of Louis Vuitton.

The Humble Beginnings: 1837

In 1837, a young man named Louis Vuitton arrived in Paris by foot, making his mark as a trunk maker. Paris, at that time, was rapidly evolving, with the fashion industry gaining momentum. Louis Vuitton’s craftsmanship was unparalleled, quickly making him one of the most sought-after trunk-makers in the city.

louis vuitton flat trunk

Revolutionizing Luggage: The Flat Trunk

In 1854, Louis Vuitton introduced a game-changer in luggage: the flat trunk. Unlike its domed predecessors, which were designed to repel water but were difficult to stack, the flat trunk was both waterproof and more convenient for transportation. It was a hit, marking the beginning of the Louis Vuitton brand's legacy.

The Birth of the Monogram: 1896

After Louis Vuitton’s death in 1892, his son Georges Vuitton took the helm. In 1896, he introduced the iconic LV monogram as a tribute to his late father and as a means to combat counterfeits. The monogram, with its quatrefoils, flowers, and the LV initials, became synonymous with luxury.

Artistic Collaborations and Innovation

Louis Vuitton has always been at the forefront of merging fashion with art. The brand has collaborated with numerous artists over the years, including Stephen Sprouse, Takashi Murakami, and Yayoi Kusama. These collaborations have resulted in some of the most iconic and collectible pieces in fashion history.

a journey through time louis vuitton

The Expansion: Beyond Trunks

The 20th century saw Louis Vuitton diversifying its offerings. From the Keepall bag in the 1930s to the Noé bag (originally designed to transport bottles of Champagne!), the brand continued to innovate while maintaining its luxury aura.

The late 1990s and 2000s saw a massive expansion in Louis Vuitton's fashion offerings, with the introduction of clothing lines, shoes, and more. Renowned designers like Marc Jacobs and later Nicolas Ghesquière have steered the brand into the world of haute couture.

Present Day: A Global Luxury Giant

Today, Louis Vuitton stands as a symbol of luxury, heritage, and innovation. It's not just a brand; it's an institution, celebrating over 160 years of fashion history. With its foray into timepieces, jewelry, fragrances, and even tech accessories, Louis Vuitton continues to be a trailblazer in the world of luxury.

The journey of Louis Vuitton, from the streets of Paris to global high-street boutiques, is a testament to timeless craftsmanship, innovation, and an unyielding passion for luxury. It serves as an inspiration, reminding us of the lasting legacy that dedication, creativity, and vision can create.

Exploration ... Nicolas Ghesquière’s ready-to-wear collection for Louis Vuitton.

Nicolas Ghesquière takes Louis Vuitton on a journey through space and time

T he difference between Marc Jacobs ’ Louis Vuitton (1997-2013) and Nicolas Ghesquière ’s Louis Vuitton (2014-future date unknown) is this: Jacobs’ Vuitton was about travel, and Ghesquière’s Vuitton is about exploration. The Vuitton story began with trunks made for the wealthy and adventurous, and Jacobs loved to fetishise the rituals of high-end holidays: his shows featured bellboys and chambermaids, hotel corridors and steam trains. Ghesquière is more interested in travel as a mindset and a catalyst for ideas.

The Louis Vuitton fashion show, Ghesquière’s second for the brand, served also as a glamorous debut for the new Foundation Louis Vuitton , a museum of contemporary art which will house LVMH chairman Bernard Arnault’s collection of modern art, and which officially opens later this month. Architect Frank Gehry has compared the building to an iceberg, to sails, and to a cloud. The asymmetric glass and steel arcs, and the waterfall lapping around the entrance, give it a sense of being a fractured-mirror image of the 1899 Grand Palais, that other vast glass-roofed Parisian temple of art, which sits on the bank of the Seine in the centre of Paris.

Foundation Louis Vuitton in Paris.

“When I saw the building for the first time, I thought it looked like a ship, or like a spaceship,” Ghesquière said after his show yesterday. Strikingly, Ghesquière - LVMH’s most high-profile new boy – turned his back on the airy charms of his bosses’ fancy new space in the Bois de Boulogne, and staged the show in a blacked-out box hidden in the centre. “I wanted it to feel like you were going into the belly of the ship,” said Ghesquière. The belly of this ship is where those original Vuitton trunks would have been at home, of course; but those trunks’s owners would have been enjoying the view from the first class deck.

The pitch-black catwalk was spotlit as if from a hovering spaceship. The show began with digital screens from which 10-foot-high faces of young men and women – beautiful, but ungroomed and unmade-up – spoke a synchronised message. “A beginning is a very delicate time,” they began, referring both to the foundation and the still-fledgling Ghesquière project at the label. “The audience is asked to sit in a place that doesn’t exist for now, a ship surrounded by woodland, a ship that serves as an incubator for creative minds ... Oh yes. I forgot to tell you. Today the Louis Vuitton house wants to explore the ability to travel to any part of the universe without moving.” Twenty voices, male and female, were blended into one to give a disembodied, androgynous quality to the sound. Ghesquire said after the show that he “wanted to express the spirit of mind in Vuitton. The idea of exploration taking you in different directions.”

Intrepid travellers ... Vuitton's miniature suitcase-handbags.

If this was time travel, we had landed around 1964. Simon & Garfunkel’s Sound of Silence played on the soundtrack, and the tiny tunic dresses, the soft haute-hippie velvets, the crackle-patent boots, the exaggerated eyelashes and oversized white earrings all conjured up the brief glory days of Edie Sedgwick, who Ghesquière namechecked backstage. But the high-collar blouses, the high-water trousers and the patch-pocket blazers were above all a uniform for the cool girl of 2014, who Ghesquière dresses now: ably represented, in his front row, by Michelle Williams and Sofia Coppola. “It’s kind of Edie, but it’s not a retro reference. She was in the 60s but something about her look takes you forward into the early 80s. What I like to do is start with a reference, and then refine that look again and again until I have erased that reference, and what remains is just itself,” Ghesquière explained. The bold, flat collars and high-waisted A-line skirts picked up exactly where his previous collection left off. “I didn’t do a big statement this time. I wanted to follow where I had started last season, to speak to that same cool girl.” But where he danced on Vuitton’s most hallowed-ground – the monogram, the suitcase handbags – Ghesquière did so with more of a sense of confidence and freedom than in his debut. A print of matchboxes and cassette tapes was inspired, he said, by “the LV monogram when girls stick silly stickers on it”. Meanwhile, the miniature suitcase-handbags looked less precious (in both senses) this season, in the soft olive-green canvas which speaks of intrepid and weather-beaten travellers, rather than glossy high-end tourists.

A Journey Through the History of Louis Vuitton

'louis vuitton isn't just about bags,': team manager.

The Louis Vuitton Time Capsule Exhibition located on Front St. outside of Union Station.

By Kasy Pertab September 18, 2018

Even though most people can’t afford to buy a Louis Vuitton bag, people in Toronto can now get a taste of the brand’s history, for free.

For the first time, the Louis Vuitton Time Capsule Exhibition is on display on Front Street outside of Union Station. The exhibit has been open since Sept. 7 and will finish on Sept. 30. Admission is free. Although it has travelled to Hong Kong, Los Angeles, Singapore, Dubai, Madrid, and many more cities, this is the exhibition’s first stop in Toronto.

First piece that was on display at the Louis Vuitton Time Capsule was his first trunk.

Replica of the first stackable trunk that Louis Vuitton created in 1858.  (KASY PERTAB/TORONTO OBSERVER)

Starting with the most historical piece, Vuitton’s original stackable trunk is the first artifact a visitors sees when they walk through the display. The trunk was created in 1858, not long after Vuitton founded his company and opened his first store in Paris, France. One of the guides for the exhibit, Calvin Du, explained that the signature flower logo for the brand still remains a mystery.

“There’s a flower on the LV coated canvas, but we actually don’t know what kind of flower it is,” Du said. “If you ever get a chance to visit the Maison House in Europe where Mr. Louis Vuitton grew up, you’ll see the pattern on the washroom floors. The house itself is like a museum.”

Glad I took the time to check out LV Time Capsule Toronto 👌 #LouisVuitton #Toronto #LVTimeCapsule pic.twitter.com/w9vftjpZNa — Dylan Major (@dylanjmajor) September 27, 2018

One of the more captivating features of the exhibit was Annie, a craftswoman from Paris, who demonstrated her skills. Du explained that she was one of the artists who makes the Louis Vuitton bags. As she wove the materials for a leather bag for the crowd, Du added that most bags take up to eight hours to make, although others can take up to 14.

Roma Singh, a team manager for Louis Vuitton, explained that the historic brand is more than what most people think.

“[The time capsule is] here to make people aware that Louis Vuitton isn’t just about bags,” Singh said. “There’s so much more behind it. We do furniture now, we have perfumes which we just launched, we have books, we have fashion and fine jewellery. We go into every segment of the market. It’s really a brand for everyone.”

I stepped back in time last night through @LouisVuitton ’s Time capsule. #lvtimecapsule #louisvuitton #louisvuittontimecapsule pic.twitter.com/DDmM0lVoEw — Kimberly (@kimberly_lyn) September 27, 2018

Louis Vuitton is owned by LVMH Moët Hennessy Louis Vuitton SE , a multinational organization with its headquarters located in Paris.

Throughout the exhibit, the variety of pieces Louis Vuitton created over the years were brought to light. They ranged from modern furniture, to shoes and belts, to travel trunks, driver’s bags, doctor’s bags, steamer bags and more. There were also several pieces created in collaboration with celebrities such as Sharon Stone, Madonna, Pharrell Williams, and Emma Stone. Other collaborations featured designs from artists like Leonardo Da Vinci and architects like Frank Gehry.

Although the crowd was filled with curious locals, there were others who attended with a real love for fashion.

Sophie Stekel, 21, is a student at Western University whose love for fashion brought her to the exhibit. Stekel admitted that she was shy growing up, but that fashion helped her to express herself and open up.

“I was always obsessed with reading magazines, it was like this escape for me. It’s a really cool way to connect with wearable art, which is especially why I like Louis Vuitton and this kind of luxury fashion,” Stekel said.

Louis Vuitton continues to celebrate over 35 years of having stores in Toronto. The Time Capsule was just one way of sharing this celebration with the city.

The crowd queued in line to entire the Louis Vuitton Time Capsule.

Louis Vuitton Summer 2021 By the Pool Collection: Louis Vuitton Marshmallow and Louis Vuitton Papillon BB

Louis Vuitton Summer 2021 By the Pool Collection Louis Vuitton Marshmallow

The Louis Vuitton Marshmallow bag has become a hit right after its release. Let’s find out why the bag is so good.  The Marshmallow is available in two colors – dusty rose “Bouton de Rose” and pastel “Crème/Safran”. The bag is made of the Monogram Empreinte leather with a gradient pattern.

This hobo bag with its rounded shape looks like a sweet marshmallow. Inside, there is one main compartment and one flat pocket. Thanks to the comfortable strap, the bag can be carried on the shoulder, on the elbow and in hands. The measurements of the bag: 9.4 x 8.7 x 5.1 inches. It can fit a mini pochette, a wallet, a key pouch, a 6 key holder, a hand cream, a lip balm, and there is still room left. The Marshmallow will still have a good shape even stuffed. Such a bag will definitely emphasize your femininity and add a touch of innocence to your everyday look.

Louis Vuitton Summer 2021 By the Pool Collection Louis Vuitton Papillon BB

The Louis Vuitton Papillon BB is presented in the same colors and leather as the first novelty – a beautiful pastel color with a gradient print, made of the embossed grainy cowhide . However, this model is made in the form of a cute cylinder. The removable and adjustable jacquard strap makes it a perfect cross-body bag. Or you can carry it in your hands thanks to the two comfortable handles. A removable round coin purse will add lightness and playfulness to your look. Its measurements: 3.5 x 3.5 x 0.4 inches. The measurements of the bag itself are 7.9 x 3.9 x 3.9 inches. Inside the Papillon there is one flap pocket that will fit a wallet, 3 key holders and an iPhone 12 max. Note, that the shape of the bag looks better when it is stuffed than when it is empty.

Pharrell's First Louis Vuitton Digital Collectible Is Going for More Than $8,000 USD

Modeled after a silhouette from the designer’s fall/winter 2024 collection, the via varsity jacket will be limited to just 200 editions..

Pharrell's First Louis Vuitton Digital Collectible Is Going for More Than $8,000 USD

Louis Vuitton has lifted the veil on its newest collectible: the VIA Varsity Jacket, a digital iteration of the physical silhouette that appeared on the House’s Fall/Winter 2024 men’s runway for the brand earlier this year. The design marks the first ready-to-wear piece designed by Pharrell to become available for VIA, Louis Vuitton’s “Treasure Trunk” that offers web3 fashionphiles the opportunity to “purchase exclusive products, whether digital or phygital,” and access to “privileged experiences.”

The collectible is specifically reserved for owners of the VIA Treasure Trunk, which is only available to purchase by registering for the brand’s waiting list and meeting its crypto eligibility requirements. At launch last summer, Louis Vuitton stated that the Trunks are limited to quantities of “a few hundred pieces,” and they are retailing for the eye-boggling price tag of almost $42,000 USD.

Caitlin Clark's Stylist on Dressing Her in Prada and Louis Vuitton and Why Fashion Brands Should Pay Attention

It's been a big week in Caitlin Clark news. Not only was the Iowa player drafted Monday by the Indiana Fever as the first pick, but she suddenly became very on the radar of the fashion world by showing up for draft night in head to toe Prada, which she said was the first time the Italian brand had dressed a player for either the WNBA or NBA draft.

The look was made up of a white double satin shirt and skirt, embroidered rhinestone mesh top, black brushed leather slingback pumps, black Galleria handbag, and acetate sunglasses. She also wore John Hardy jewelry.

Later in the week she was in her new home town of Indianapolis for her first press conference as a Fever player, and arrived for the occasion in Louis Vuitton: specifically, a crossover bust dress in wool-silk cady, paired with a jewel button tuxedo jacket with satin lapels, a Pico GO-14 handbag with gold and silver-tone studs and the brand's Signature pump, with gold-tone monogram studs.

Behind both looks is Adri Zgirdea, a stylist who works with other athletes and began working with Clark through her agency, Excel Sports (Zgirdea works with other Excel clients).

"I wanted to take Caitlin's natural flair and bold playing style from the court to the orange carpet [at the WNBA draft ]," Zgirdea says of her approach to styling Clark for the big night. "She already has a knack for captivating people through her confident and record breaking game play, so styling her is all about taking that bold energy and translating it into a look that reflects her personality, values and the moment."

"For the WNBA draft, Caitlin and I talked about putting together a look that was fresh, substantive and stayed true to her," Zgirdea adds. "I immediately knew Prada would be the perfect brand to help create a vibrant yet timeless look that was not only memorable, but a first."

Being a "first" was central to how Zgirdea thought about what brand to work with for the draft night.

"I always consider my clients’ personal story when working on ‘milestone looks' in their career. Caitlin is a record breaker in so many ways, I knew the look had to be some kind of ‘first' and my initial thought was Prada," she says. "I've worked with the brand for a couple of my male clients, and had the most wonderful experience. The brand ethos and Caitlin’s style was such a fit: true craft, substance over showiness and they had never dressed anyone for the draft: the stars really aligned."

As for the Louis Vuitton look at the press conference?

"LV is a brand that Caitlin loves, so it was not a question of ‘if,' rather ‘when' and ‘where,'" Zgirdea says.

Zgirdea is of  Romanian and Serbian descent and emigrated to the U.S. when she was a child. She's always loved fashion, she says, but studied finance in college ("European parents, remember?" she says) before pivoting to fashion. Her background includes personal shopping, merchandising, managing and buying. Styling athletes "came about serendipitously," she says, "as I had two friends in the sports industry, one at Priority Sports and the other at BDA Sports (which merged with WME)."

She's worked with Josh Richardson of the Miami Heat, Zach Collins of the San Antonio Spurs, Corey Kispert of the Washington Wizards, Nikola Jokić of the Denver Nuggets and more.

"It typically takes five years before a major fashion brand will agree to dress any athlete. They want to see players established and generating buzz before they make the investment to work together," Zgirdea says of her experience. "That makes Caitlin's look at the WNBA draft exciting and groundbreaking, because this is also the first time any player, male or female, has been dressed by Prada for the draft. This is a clear example that brands are paying attention, and could lead to more players collaborating with major fashion brands in the future."

Which is to say that while Prada and Louis Vuitton are the early high end brands that have been seen Clark, her fashion journey is just beginning.

"Caitlin is a head turner, whether that’s on the court, being the first to wear Prada at the draft or making a guest appearance on ‘SNL' – she's got people talking and investing in women's sports in a way we've never seen before," Zgirdea says. "Brands looking to stay on the cutting edge of pop culture should be watching because Caitlin is already breaking glass ceilings and this is just the beginning."
