Ignacio Carrillo traveled all his life throughout the villages and regions of northern Colombia, carrying music and traditional songs on his accordion. As he grew older, he married and settled with his wife in a small town, leaving his nomadic life behind. When she suddenly dies, Ignacio decides to make one last journey to the northern edge of the country and return the accordion to the man who gave it to him, so he will never play it again. On the way, Ignacio is joined by Fermin, a young man who dreams of becoming a "juglar" like him. Tired of his loneliness, Ignacio accepts Fermin's company. Together they start the journey from Majagual, Sucre, to Taroa, surviving all kinds of adventures and understanding the mix of cultures that gave birth to the music they play. Ignacio tries to convince Fermin to take a different path in his life, having learned that his only led to solitude and sadness, but he has to accept that destiny has different plans for him and his pupil.

The rugged majesty of the Colombian landscape forms a spectacular widescreen backdrop for a simple, bittersweet tale of regret and companionship in “The Wind Journeys.” Awash in scenic vistas and infused with a touch of the supernatural, this beautifully judged two-hander tells the story of an aging accordion player and the young wannabe musician he’s reluctantly allowed to accompany him on his long trek north. Fest travel will take writer-director Ciro Guerra’s second feature far and wide, particularly in Latin American territories, and smart, venturesome distribs should be able to capitalize on the film’s abundant visual and emotional rewards.
Ignacio Carrillo (Marciano Martinez) has spent most of his life as a juglar , or minstrel. Now in his twilight years and still mourning his wife’s recent death, Ignacio vows never to play the accordion again, and sets out on his donkey to return the instrument to his mentor in northern Colombia. Tagging along for the trip is rootless, restless teen Fermin Morales (Yull Nunez), who longs to apprentice himself to Ignacio and learn to play the accordion — and later, the drum, though he demonstrates little talent for either instrument.
Though he’s too taciturn and withdrawn to be openly hostile toward his fellow traveler, Ignacio makes it amply clear that Fermin’s presence is unwelcome. Guerra’s script has its share of familiar elements — Fermin, no surprise, is in need of a father figure — but its most remarkable quality may be its fundamental honesty. The scribe never tries to force a bond between the two characters; nor does he take the easy route of supplying Fermin with latent musical abilities.
Yet despite the absence of conventional payoffs, drama and suspense are hardly in short supply. A drawn-out sequence in which Ignacio decides to break his vow, as he’s lured into a battle of escalating one-upmanship with an arrogant accordionist, proves enormously satisfying, and the story takes a believably harrowing turn when Ignacio is robbed and it falls to Fermin to recover the stolen instrument. The tale is enriched by myriad references to sorcery and other mystical undercurrents, the most resonant being an alleged curse on Ignacio’s distinctively crafted accordion.
Given little dialogue beyond his singing performances, gifted non-pro Martinez strongly inhabits a figure as tough and unyielding as the landscape, though in the grip of an unarticulated sorrow; Nunez has piercing moments as a young man trying to make something of himself. Local side characters, speaking a wide range of dialects, are well inhabited but generally portrayed as antagonistic.
As helmed by Guerra (avoiding the sophomore slump after his prize-winning 2004 debut, “La sombra del caminante”), “The Wind Journeys” unfolds at a slow but steady pace commensurate with that of its two leads, offering gorgeous but never unnecessary stops and detours along the way. Whether framing a hut on a cloud-wrapped hilltop or the cracked, parched ground of a desert, Paulo Andres Perez’s widescreen compositions often dwarf the characters in their sheer scale and grandeur, offering up the region’s desolate beauty as an object worthy of endless contemplation.
Ivan “Tito” Ocampo’s score subtly supports the film’s musical performances.

New York pediatrician dies after falling from moving Airstream trailer during family trip
A New York children's physician is dead after falling out of an Airstream trailer on Saturday during a family road trip, officials said.
Dr. Monika Woroniecka, 58, fell out of the moving trailer on State Route 12E in the town of Brownville in upstate New York, state police said in a release.
Witnesses who were driving directly behind the trailer told state troopers they saw the passenger side door of the Airstream blown open by wind, then Woroniecka's arm hanging on the door, the release said.
She was then thrown from the Airstream and hit her head on the side of the road, witnesses told New York State Police. An ambulance transported Woroniecka to Samaritan Medical Center in nearby Watertown, where she succumbed to her injuries.
Other family members were in the trailer with Woroniecka at the time she fell out, although police did not specify which family members. They were traveling from Stony Brook on Long Island.
The trailer was being pulled by a vehicle driven by her husband, Robert P. Woroniecki. The family was on the last 20 minutes of their trip, police said.
Woroniecki was a pediatrician at Stony Brook Children’s Hospital, which told NBC News in a statement on Monday it was "deeply saddened to learn of the tragic loss of one of our esteemed colleagues over the weekend."
"Our thoughts are with her family, friends and colleagues affected by this heartbreaking event," the hospital said.
The Polish-born doctor treated children for a number of conditions, including food and environmental allergies, asthma, hives and eczema, according to her profile with Stony Brook Medicine .
Woroniecka specialized in allergy immunology since the early 2000s, and was known for cultivating long-term relationships with the families under her care.

New York Pediatrician, 58, Dies After Being ‘Thrown’ from Open Door of Moving Airstream Trailer
According to witnesses, the trailer swung open with the victim’s “arm hanging on the door” before the tragic accident
A specialist in child health has tragically died after falling out of a moving trailer.
The incident occurred on Saturday, April 6 shortly after 3:00 p.m. as Robert P. Woroniecka, 59, drove a pick-up truck pulling a 2024 Airstream trailer, with his wife Dr. Monika I. Woroniecka, 58, and family inside, New York State Police said in a press release .
The group had been traveling from their hometown of Stony Brook, New York.
According to witnesses, during the last 20 minutes of the journey, the passenger door of the trailer swung open with Woroniecka's “arm hanging on the door” due to the wind, “causing her to be thrown from the Airstream.”
Woroniecka then “struck her head on the shoulder of the roadway” after being ejected from the vehicle, per the release. She was transported to Samaritan Medical Center’s Emergency Room where she died from her injuries.

BROWNVILLE, N.Y. (AP) - A Long Island doctor who was headed to upstate New York to see the solar eclipse with her family fell out of a moving trailer on a highway and died, authorities said.
Dr. Monika Woroniecka, 58, a pediatrician at Stony Brook Children’s Hospital who specialized in immunology, was riding in the 2024 Airstream trailer along with members of her family on Saturday for the last 20 minutes of their trip to see the eclipse, the New York State Police said in a news release. Woroniecka's husband, Robert Woroniecki, was driving the pickup truck that was hauling the trailer.
The wind blew the trailer's door open as the family was headed west on Route 12E in the town of Brownville and Woroniecka was thrown from the trailer, police said.
Woroniecka hit her head on the shoulder of the road, police said. She was taken to a hospital, where she died.
Dr. Susan Schuval, chief of pediatric allergy and immunology at Stony Brook, said in a statement that Woroniecka "was known for her calm demeanor, kindness, and dedication to her patients."
It is against state law to ride in a "house coach trailer" such as the family's Airstream while it is hitched to a vehicle traveling on the road.
