Aaa visa credit cards review: generous bonus cash-back categories with no annual fee, there are two aaa cash-back credit cards with different bonus spending categories..

thumbnail

The American Automobile Association (AAA) offers two cash-back credit cards that are surprisingly rewarding for certain purchases: The AAA Daily Advantage Visa Signature® Credit Card and AAA Travel Advantage Visa Signature® Credit Card . These cards shine for earning cash back on groceries, gas and EV charging. However, both cards have caps on some the most rewarding spending categories, so they aren't the best fit for everyone.

CNBC Select has the details for the rewards, welcome bonus and rates and fees of these no-annual-fee cash-back credit cards .

AAA Travel Advantage Visa Signature® Credit Card

*You can earn a maximum of $350 in combined cash back each calendar year at gas stations and electric vehicle charging stations, after that purchases earn 1% for the rest of the year.

Welcome bonus

Earn a $100 statement credit when you spend $1,000 within the first 90 days of account opening.

Regular APR

19.24% to 33.24%, based on your creditworthiness

Foreign transaction fee

Balance transfer fee.

Either $10 or 5% of the amount of each transfer, whichever is greater.

AAA Daily Advantage Visa Signature® Credit Card

*You can earn a maximum of $500 in combined cash back each calendar year at grocery stores, gas stations and wholesale clubs, after that purchases earn 1% for the rest of the year

AAA Visa Signature cards review

Benefits and perks, how to earn and use cash back, rates and fees, alternatives to the aaa credit cards, are the aaa credit cards right for you, bottom line.

Both AAA Visa Signature cards have the same welcome bonus, which allows you to earn a $100 statement credit after spending $1,000 within the first 90 days from account opening.

Both of these cards come with a handful of Visa Signature credit card perks , including:

  • Three free months of Shipt membership (free delivery on $35+ orders)
  • Three free months of Skillshare membership
  • Travel and emergency assistance services
  • Visa concierge services
  • Exclusive access to Sofar events and eligibility for a free ticket per show

The AAA Daily Advantage Visa Signature® Credit Card and AAA Travel Advantage Visa Signature® Credit Card are both cash-back rewards credit cards, but they earn bonus cash back on different purchases.

The AAA Daily Advantage Visa Signature® Credit Card earns:

  • 5% cash back on grocery store purchases
  • 3% cash back on gas and electric vehicle charging stations, wholesale clubs, streaming services , pharmacy and AAA purchases
  • 1% cash back on all other purchases

Cardholders can earn a maximum of $500 combined from the 5% and 3% bonus categories each calendar year at grocery stores, gas stations and wholesale clubs , after that purchases earn 1% for the rest of the year. So if you use this card exclusively for grocery store purchases, you would earn 5% back on $10,000 in spending.

The AAA Travel Advantage Visa Signature® Credit Card earns:

  • 5% cash back on gas and electric vehicle charging station purchases
  • 3% cash back on grocery stores, restaurants , travel and AAA purchases

The AAA Travel Advantage Visa Signature® Credit Card lets you earn a maximum of $350 in combined cash back each calendar year in the 5% bonus category, after that purchases earn 1% back for the rest of the year. That's the equivalent of spending $7,000 a year at gas stations and electric vehicle charging stations.

You can redeem cash back for a direct deposit or statement credit once you have earned at least $5 in rewards. You can also cash out your rewards for gift cards or merchandise and travel through participating AAA clubs.

Both AAA credit cards have the same rates and fees. There are no annual fees and no foreign transaction fees . Balance transfers and cash advances are charged a 5% fee of the amount of the transaction with a $10 minimum. The standard APR is a variable 19.24% to 33.24% and there is no introductory APR offer . There is a fee of up to $41 for late payments and returned payments.

AAA Daily Advantage Visa Signature® Credit Card vs. Blue Cash Preferred® Card from American Express

The Blue Cash Preferred® Card from American Express is CNBC Select's best credit card for groceries . It has a higher rate of return for groceries than the AAA Daily Advantage Visa Signature® Credit Card on grocery purchases (6% back on the first $6,000 in purchases per year at U.S. supermarkets) and U.S. streaming services (6% back).

It also has a more generous welcome offer and a $0 intro annual fee for the first year, then $95 (see rates and fees ). The Amex Blue Cash Preferred card has better benefits, including return protection, up to $84 a year in Disney Bundle credits ($7 a month with an eligible $9.99 a month Disney Bundle subscription) and up to $120 in annual Equinox credit ($10 a month). These credits can offset the card's annual fee (see rates and fees ), so the decision may come down to how much cash back you'll earn with each card. The AAA Daily Advantage Visa Signature® Credit Card limits select bonus cash-back categories to $500 in rewards each year before the return drops to 1%. So if you expect to earn more cash back than that, the Blue Cash Preferred could be more lucrative.

Blue Cash Preferred® Card from American Express

6% cash back at U.S. supermarkets on up to $6,000 per year in purchases (then 1%), 6% cash back on select U.S. streaming subscriptions, 3% cash back at U.S. gas stations, 3% cash back on transit (including taxis/rideshare, parking, tolls, trains, buses and more) and 1% cash back on other purchases. Cash Back is received in the form of Reward Dollars that can be redeemed as a statement credit or at Amazon.com checkout.

Earn a $250 statement credit after you spend $3,000 in purchases on your new card within the first 6 months.

$0 intro annual fee for the first year, then $95.

0% for 12 months on purchases from the date of account opening

19.24% - 29.99% variable. Variable APRs will not exceed 29.99%.

Either $5 or 3% of the amount of each transfer, whichever is greater.

AAA Travel Advantage Visa Signature® Credit Card vs. Chase Freedom Flex℠

The Chase Freedom Flex earns 5% cash back on the first $1,500 in combined purchases in a variety of rotating quarterly categories . That's a potential $75 in bonus cash per quarter or $300 per year. While this is $50 lower than the $350 annual cash-back cap for the AAA Travel Advantage Visa Signature® Credit Card's 5% bonus category (then 1% back), it applies to a wider range of purchases and the Chase Ultimate Rewards points you earn with the Freedom Flex can be much more valuable.

When you pair the Freedom Flex card with a Chase credit card that allows point transfers such as the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card or Chase Sapphire Reserve® , you can also transfer the points you've earned with your Freedom Flex card. For example, $300 cash back is 30,000 Chase points, which you can transfer to Hyatt to book a standard night award at a Category 7 hotel, like the Grand Hyatt Kauai Resort & Spa or Park Hyatt Tokyo. A night at these hotels can cost $700+, so having the ability to transfer Chase points dramatically increases the Freedom Flex's value.

Chase Freedom Flex℠

5% cash back on up to $1,500 in combined purchases in bonus categories each quarter you activate (then 1%), 5% cash back on travel booked through the Chase Ultimate Rewards®, 3% on drugstore purchases and on dining (including takeout and eligible delivery services), 1% cash back on all other purchases

Earn a $200 bonus after you spend $500 on purchases in the first 3 months from account opening.

0% for the first 15 months from account opening on purchases and balance transfers

20.49% - 29.24% variable

Intro fee of either $5 or 3% of the amount of each transfer, whichever is greater, on transfers made within 60 days of account opening. After that, either $5 or 5% of the amount of each transfer, whichever is greater.

Member FDIC. Terms apply. Information about the Chase Freedom Flex℠ has been collected independently by Select and has not been reviewed or provided by the issuer of the card prior to publication.

The AAA Daily Advantage Visa Signature® Credit Card and AAA Travel Advantage Visa Signature® Credit Cards both have value. They have no annual fees and earn cash back, which is always useful and never complicated. If you want to add a card to your wallet to use exclusively for groceries or gas stations, then these cards are hard to beat. However, some of the most rewarding bonus cash-back categories for both cards have an annual limit, then the return drops to 1%. So heavy spenders may be better off with a card with unlimited bonus categories .

The American Automobile Association offers two co-branded credit cards , the AAA Daily Advantage Visa Signature® Credit Card and AAA Travel Advantage Visa Signature® Credit Card . These are no-annual-fee cash-back cards with generous bonus spending categories. However, the amount of bonus cash-back you can earn each year is capped for select categories (then it drops to 1%), which limits the value for anyone whose spending will exceed these limits.

Clarification: This story has been updated to clarify that certain AAA credit card bonus categories have capped cash-back rates and earn a lower return once that limit is reached.

Identity theft occurs when someone uses your personal information without your consent to commit fraud or other crime. Information including your date of birth, name, driver's license, or Social Security number can be used to steal your identity.

What are warning signs of identity theft?

Some warning signs include household bills not being delivered, credit or loan applications being denied, receiving statements for purchases you didn't make, fraudulent transactions appearing on your accounts, your tax return being declined, and small charges appearing on your credit card statements.

How do I minimize the risk of ID theft?

To minimize your risk of identity theft, don't share your personal information, create strong passwords and use two-factor authentication, only sign on to secure Wi-Fi sites, update your social media settings to "private", set up credit card and financial alerts, track your credit score, and avoid using debit cards while shopping online.

What should I do if my identity is stolen?

If you become the victim of identity theft, place a fraud alert on your credit reports, freeze your credit, review your credit reports, contact the Federal Trade Commission, make a list of all stolen items and keep records, contact your creditors and key agencies, and change your accounts passwords.

Moscow Vnukovo Airport Guide: What to expect on arrival and departure in Russia

This is part of the Been There, Done That series, where our expert globetrotters travel the world to get the insights and information you need for a seamless travel experience.

Moscow, a city where the grandeur of imperial Russia meets the vibrant pulse of the modern world, offers an unrivaled travel experience steeped in history and culture.

The bustling hubs of Sheremetyevo, Domodedovo, and Vnukovo Airports are among its gateways, each pivotal in connecting travelers to this enigmatic capital. Vnukovo Airport (VKO), the oldest and yet one of the most dynamic of Moscow's airports , was where I first stepped onto Russian soil after flying out of Istanbul.

As the westernmost of Moscow's airports, Vnukovo stands as a critical portal to the mysteries of Russia, offering a unique blend of historical charm and contemporary efficiency.

Understanding how VKO works is crucial for a seamless and enjoyable travel experience. So, let’s embark on this journey together as I navigate Vnukovo Airport for the first time.

Just 28 kilometers from Moscow's city center, Vnukovo Airport (VKO) is integral to the capital's robust airport system. Dating back to 1941, VKO has evolved from a military airbase to Moscow's oldest operating airport and the fourth busiest in Russia.

Over the years, VKO has undergone significant modernization efforts, including expanding its terminal facilities and upgrading its runways to accommodate the increasing passenger traffic.

It is a significant hub for domestic and international flights today. Key airlines like Utair, Pobeda, and Azerbaijan Airlines operate regular services. The only whisper of its military past is the occasional uniformed soldier catching a flight to or from home.

The airport connects Moscow to many destinations, ranging from regional hotspots across Russia to international locales in Europe, Asia, and the Middle East. It is a pivotal gateway for travelers venturing into the heart of Russia and beyond.

Stepping into Moscow: Unpacking VKO's arrival process

As I stepped off the plane at Vnukovo Airport, my mind was a whirlwind of nerves and cinematic expectations. The image I had conjured up of a rundown, dimly lit building couldn't have been further from the truth.

To my astonishment, I was greeted by a modern, spacious airport, its cleanliness and size completely defying my preconceived (and admittedly biased) notions. Travelators eased the journey through the expansive terminals, large bathrooms catered to weary travelers, and clear signage in Russian, English, and Chinese provided a comforting sense of direction.

The first official step in my Moscow adventure was navigating through passport control , a daunting process in my anxious state. Armed with my passport and hotel reservation, I approached the immigration desk.

Travelers to Russia need to be prepared with the correct paperwork, including a valid passport, a Russian visa (for those from countries without a visa-free arrangement), and any additional documents, such as an invitation letter , depending on the purpose of the visit.

At Vnukovo, the process was efficient yet thorough. The officials emphasized ensuring that all entry requirements were met, a standard practice at this gateway to Russia.

This process was relatively easy since my nationality did not require a visa. He asked a few questions about my travels, including where I was staying.

Pro Tip: Learn from my mistake; put your phone away when you get to the desk. Print out any documentation you need (including your hotel reservation), as they have a strict policy of no Mobile Phones in the passport control area .

It was here when I also discovered the next unique step at VKO: the Migration Card. This card, split into two identical parts, contains information about my stay in Russia. The passport control officer kept one part and handed me the other to keep safe until I departed Russia.

My experience at Vnukovo's passport control was a lesson in shedding biases and embracing the unexpected. The blend of strict immigration policies with modern facilities set the tone for my stay in Moscow, a city full of surprises waiting to be discovered.

Finding my luggage at VKO

After leaving passport control, a blend of relief and anticipation set in as I ventured toward the baggage claim area at Vnukovo Airport. The journey to the carousels was straightforward, thanks to the airport's efficient layout and clear signage.

Vnukovo's modernity was once again evident in its well-organized luggage retrieval system. The carousels were conveniently located , easily accessible, and marked with flight information, making finding the one assigned to my flight from Turkey easy.

As I waited for my bags, I couldn't help but notice the helpful information screens and announcements guiding passengers in multiple languages and the multitude of free bag trolleys neatly lined up between the carousels. It struck me how these little touches of thoughtfulness could ease the anxiety of international travel, especially in a bustling airport like VKO.

However, not all journeys are without their hiccups. I recalled watching a few weary travelers dealing with lost or delayed luggage, which could be a common challenge in any major airport.

Vnukovo had designated counters for lost and found, where passengers could report their missing items. The staff there were prepared to assist in multiple languages, which I found reassuring. It's always advisable to keep your luggage stickers handy and to have a clear description of your baggage – something I made sure to do.

Fortunately, my bags appeared on the carousel without any delay, but knowing that there were systems in place to assist in case they hadn't was a relief. This part of my journey at Vnukovo was a reminder of the importance of patience and preparation when traveling, and it was yet another instance where my expectations of the airport were pleasantly surpassed.

Crossing the final threshold: VKO’s Customs process

The final leg of my arrival journey was navigating the customs process at Vnukovo. Often shrouded in mystery for many travelers, customs can be daunting. With the customs declaration form in hand, I felt a sense of responsibility to adhere to the regulations specific to Russia.

The customs process at VKO was more straightforward than I had anticipated. Officers were efficient, ensuring all travelers complied with the Russian customs laws. Being aware of what to declare was vital. Items like foreign currency over a certain amount, expensive electronics, and valuable personal items needed to be declared to avoid complications. Additionally, Russia has specific restrictions on items like narcotics, weapons, and certain agricultural products in line with international customs practices.

I noticed that the customs area was divided into two channels : 'Green' for passengers with nothing to declare and 'Red' for those with items that needed to be declared. Having researched beforehand, I confidently headed towards the 'Green' channel, as my belongings fell within the allowances.

The officers conducted their duties with a balance of thoroughness and efficiency. Although I had nothing to declare, I observed how they assisted those in the 'Red' channel, guiding them through declaring their items. It was a reminder of the importance of being transparent and prepared when crossing international borders.

Completing the customs process marked the end of my official entry procedures at Vnukovo. It was a smooth transition, and with each step, I was getting closer to experiencing the vibrant heart of Moscow.

Choosing my path: Transport options from Vnukovo to Moscow City

After clearing customs, I was ready to venture to Moscow's city center. There are many options:

1. Moscow Metro: Aeroexpress Train

Fill me in

Vnukovo International Airport is connected to the Moscow Metro system by Aeroexpress trains. These trains provide a convenient way to reach the city center. The train station is located near the airport terminal. It is marked with bold signs to the right of international arrivals.

The Aeroexpress Train from VKO will take you to Moscow's Kievsky Railway Station (Kievskaya metro station). From there, you can easily access the Moscow Metro, which is well-developed and serves various lines that can take you to different parts of the city.

While I was far too nervous to attempt figuring out the process on my own when I had just landed, I braved the metro with the help of a Russian-speaking friend. It was a relatively easy system once you understood it.

Simply purchase a metro ticket or use contactless payment methods like Troika card or mobile apps to pay for your metro ride. The fare may vary depending on the number of zones you plan to travel through.

The Moscow Metro has signs and announcements in Russian and English; however, it can be very confusing. Maps and information are available at the stations.

The travel time from Vnukovo Airport to the Kievsky Railway Station by Aeroexpress is approximately 35-40 minutes. The duration of your metro ride will depend on your destination within the city.

2. Car Rentals at VKO

For travelers preferring to drive themselves, VKO offers several car rental options. The rental agencies are conveniently located, with their desks providing clear information about rental procedures and available vehicles—the variety catered to preferences and needs, from economy cars to more luxurious options. While I didn’t opt for a rental car, observing the process, it seemed streamlined and traveler-friendly.

3. Taxi and Ride-Hailing Services

Fill me in

Since I was not mentally prepared enough to navigate to my hotel on the Metro or to work out Russian road rules, I opted for the easier Taxi option. I located the service desk to the right of the arrivals next to the main exit of the arrivals hall. While the attendant didn't speak English, she was happy to communicate with me through Google Translate.

I paid about 1200 rubles for my taxi ride. Taxi fares at Vnukovo Airport are calculated based on distance, time of day, and demand. The base fee during the day is around 200 RUB, with a price per kilometer of about 20 RUB. If the driver waits, there's an additional charge of 600 RUB per hour. For a typical 5km ride from the airport to the city center, the cost would be around 300 RUB.

Opt to pay for the taxi at the desk to avoid being locked in a debate with the driver after you arrive at your destination. Confirm the price before getting into the cab if you aren’t booking through the desk.

For those accustomed to using ride-hailing apps, it's important to note that Uber is not operational in Moscow. Instead, I learned that Yandex is the go-to app, not only for ride-hailing but also as a more reliable alternative to Google Maps in Russia. Downloading Yandex was a practical decision, helping me navigate the city more easily during my stay.

While a taxi was the easiest option to get to my hotel, I quickly learned that during peak hours, the wait for a taxi could be as long as two hours due to the city's heavy traffic and the weather.

VKO Main Terminal facilities and services

Fill me in

In the main terminal of VKO, convenience meets culture, with both a mosque and restrooms readily accessible for travelers' comfort and diverse needs.

While I waited, I decided to explore the airport’s main terminal facilities. VKO’s airport Wi-Fi allowed me to download an eSIM. However, if you prefer a physical SIM, you’ll find a few SIM card kiosks scattered near the Taxi stand.

For a quick snack, vending machines were next to the Taxi stand, and a further walk down the main building led me to cafes like Shokoladnitsa and MOO-MOO for a more substantial bite.

VKO Airport is equipped with several ATMs and currency exchange services. You'll find them on the first and second floors of the airport. Given the current financial sanctions against Russia, it's important to note that popular international credit cards like Visa and Mastercard may not be accepted and will not work at the ATMs.

Therefore, having cash, especially some rubles, is essential for your stay in Moscow. The airport's currency exchange services can help you with this.

Taking off from Vnukovo: A guide to departure procedures at VKO

Fill me in

Following the departures sign, I'm on my way to catch the flight that will carry me home, the journey's end just a flight away.

At Vnukovo Airport, passengers have multiple check-in options to choose from. For convenience, I opted for online check-in, which allowed me to avoid long queues at the airport. Most airlines operating from VKO offer this service, enabling passengers to check in via their website or mobile app before arriving at the airport.

I walked to the designated check-in counter for my flight (which I found by checking the information screens at the airport entrance) to check in my luggage and collect a printed boarding pass. VKO’s counters are staffed with friendly personnel.

Not only did they help check-in bags for those who checked in online, but they also assisted those who wanted to check in traditionally. It's always a good idea to check your airline's check-in deadlines to ensure a smooth process.

Passport control and security screening

After that, I walked to passport control; the area was marked and easy to locate. There were separate lines for Russian citizens and foreign nationals , helping to streamline the process. As a foreign traveler, I joined the line designated for international passengers. The staff at VKO efficiently managed the queues, ensuring the passengers' flow was smooth and swift.

When it was my turn, I presented my passport, Migration Card, and boarding pass to the immigration officer. They checked my travel documents thoroughly, ensuring that I had the correct documentation for my next destination as well.

The officer also asked a few standard questions about the duration and purpose of my visit. I found that responding politely and directly helped make this process more efficient.

After verifying my details, the officer stamped my passport, signaling the end of my stay in Russia. This process was relatively quick, but it's always good to account for extra time, especially during peak travel hours, as the queues can be longer.

I then made my way to the security screening area. To ensure a smooth experience, I followed the standard procedures: removing metal objects and placing my electronics and liquids in separate trays.

Being prepared and following the instructions of the security staff helped expedite the process. It's also wise to be aware of the airport's specific regulations regarding prohibited items in carry-on luggage.

Finding Gates and boarding information

After clearing security, navigating to my gate was straightforward. VKO’s signage system is clear, guiding passengers to their respective gates. The airport's layout is user-friendly, but checking the map or asking for assistance is still a good idea.

As for boarding, keeping an ear out for announcements and checking the information screens regularly is crucial, as gate numbers and boarding times can change.

Understanding the boarding process of your respective airline – such as boarding groups or special assistance requirements – can also make the process smoother. Ask for clarification and information about their process at the check-in counter.

Facilities in the departures terminal

Fill me in

At first glance, the departure terminal looks average; however, as you explore, you’ll quickly realize there’s a lot to enjoy.

VKO offers a variety of dining choices , from local favorites to international cuisine, including the Halaal-certified Doner House and Blackstar Burger. There are also many other dining outlets where you can sample Russian and global flavors.

I spent most of my time milling around the duty-free shops that boasted a range of products, including unique Russian souvenirs and perfumes exclusive to Russia. It's a great place to pick up last-minute gifts, unique items, or travel essentials.

Unfortunately, you’ll need Euros or Rubles to pay. There are no currency exchange services once you’re in the departures hall , so make sure to change your cash before you go through passport control and security. You also will not find a pharmacy in this airport section, so plan accordingly.

VKO does offer a variety of lounges and rest zones for those seeking a quiet space. These areas provide a comfortable place to relax before your flight. The access conditions and facilities vary, so it's worth checking which lounge suits your needs best.

As my time at Vnukovo Airport drew to a close and my plane ascended into the skies, I reflected on the ease and efficiency of my experience.

Departing from VKO was surprisingly smooth, a testament to the well-structured procedures and the attentiveness of the airport staff.

Each step, from check-in to boarding, was streamlined and stress-free, underscoring the airport's commitment to passenger comfort and convenience.

Thus, despite arriving overwhelmed with anxiety, I left Moscow, longing to return after having all of my preconceived notions shattered.
