Postponed trip. My husband and I have been together for 22 years and never taken a vacation that wasn't pasted together with the cheapest "surprise deals" on flights and hotel rooms, eating on the cheap including making sandwiches and stuff from the mini fridge. 2 years ago we were supposed to go on a luxury vacation for the first time, but our anniversary is in September and we couldn't convince my inlaws to come babysit so my oldest wouldn't miss school. So we were supposed to postpone it to last year but...COVID. Now we are both fully vaccinated and we live near the inlaws, and I think if we ever needed to celebrate this is the year! 22 years is even better than 20, right? Looking for recommendations for either destinations a few hours flight (not Hawaii/Europe far) that is nice in the fall, so maybe off the path of the hurricanes which are supposed to be fierce this year. I could go all inclusive or not. OR recommendations for an amazing travel agent that could book us a mostly relaxing package where I can prepay for messages and an excursion without worrying about the cost of every little thing while we are there. I have been mulling around Cancun/Playa Mujeres which seems to get less hurricane activity, or a beautiful lake getaway near a cute town. My husband loves to fish. I would love to snorkel or paddle board, sight see, and maybe rent scooters to check out a town. Thanks to anyone who takes the time to read this! See more …

Adults-only cruise launches on River Walk in downtown San Antonio

SAN ANTONIO – Visitors to downtown San Antonio can now hop on an adults-only river barge that’s complete with a mariachi band.

GO RIO, the city’s river barge operator, announced this week that it has launched the Mariachi Sip & Cruise.

The cruise is for people 21 and older, and includes a tour around downtown, entertainment from Mariachi Amador, two drink tickets and a souvenir cup.

Boats depart at 7 p.m. on select dates this month and in May. The tours last 50 minutes and tickets cost $60 each.

GO RIO also announced that for the first time, it will showcase one of its boats during the Fiesta Flambeau Parade on Saturday.

“GO RIO boat captains and Girl Scouts from local troops will ride on the wheeled boat float, giving out GO RIO beads,” a news release states. “Marina, GO RIO’s lively turtle mascot, will lead the crowd in a Flambeau dance party -- be sure to be on the lookout for float #133 so you can join in!”

The Fiesta Flambeau Parade is known as America’s largest illuminated night parade with more than 200 parade entries and a typical attendance of about 750,000 spectators. It’s also broadcasted and livestreamed (on KSAT!) to about 1.5 million more people.

KSAT will broadcast a pre-party from 7-8 p.m., with parade coverage following from 8-11 p.m. The vanguard kicks off at 7:15 p.m. and the main parade starts at 7:45 p.m.

From The Alamo to Tex-Mex: David Begnaud explores San Antonio

With just 48 hours to explore, David Begnaud  embarked on a whirlwind adventure in San Antonio, Texas - the city known for its rich history, Tex-Mex cuisine, and the iconic Riverwalk.

Upon arrival, Begnaud's first stop was The Alamo, Texas's most visited landmark, welcoming 1.6 million tourists annually. He met Kolby, a local guide, who taught him about the battle that led to Texas becoming its own nation before joining the U.S. in 1845 as the 28th state.

As Begnaud explored the city, he donned a cowboy hat, indulging in the local culture. "It's not the hat. It's the cowboy," joked Mr. Flores, a hat seller.

Lunch at Mi Tierra Café, a local staple since 1941, provided a taste of authentic Tex-Mex cuisine as the sounds of a Mariachi band filled the air. 

William Cortez, the great-grandson of the founder, explained the restaurant's long-standing traditions and the expertise of the kitchen staff.

"Our guys in the back that prep all the food every day, they have a combined 150 years experience together," said Cortez.

At Pearl Par, Begnaud held a sign that read, "I'm looking for a story." It wasn't long before Denise McCalla approached him.

Traveling from Minnesota with her husband, who has Alzheimer's, and their grandchildren, she revealed the therapeutic power of these family outings.

"It's nice to travel with the kids and grandkids," McCalla said.

She said maintaining normalcy is crucial for her husband's well-being. She said their doctor told her that no medication could match the benefits of spending time with family.

"It's true… because he lights up," she said.

As Begnaud continued on he met Bethany Vazquez, a local business owner who discussed the challenges and changes in education, especially the shift to virtual learning, which has been significant during the pandemic.

"I've had my own classroom. I've been tutoring for 14 years. And being able to tutor and be in the classroom, you see a lot of kids who have learning gaps, but you also see they just keep getting pushed through," Vazquez said.

Katelynn Schlötfeldt, shared a story of how she met her husband, thanks to a decades-old connection between their mothers who had met years ago in Germany, lost contact and then, by sheer coincidence, reconnected after their children started dating. Schlötfeldt and her husband's relationship strengthened after.

"Fast forward, I am 20 years old and I met him on a missions trip. And then I started dating him. And then our moms saw each other, after seeing each other in 1990," Schlötfeldt recalled. "I married him, and he is the greatest man ever. And now he's gone in the Army."

The lesson learned from this adventure: Meeting strangers led to memorable moments for all of us.
