Want to island hop around French Polynesia, visit Africa's incredible cities, and cruise through Asia without ever switching hotels or repacking your bags? An around-the-world cruise provides the ultimate itinerary, packed with exciting international destinations (some even visit hard-to-reach destinations like Easter Island and Antarctica), and luxury cruise lines provide comfortable accommodations, specialty restaurants, and plenty to do on and off the ship.

There are two main things you need before booking a world cruise: plenty of time and some spare cash. Prices range from around $20,000 to upwards of $100,000 per person, and all our top picks are more than 100 days (one is even a whopping 275 days), so they're ideal for retired travelers looking for their next big adventure. Pack wisely for a range of destinations and climates, and get ready for the journey of a lifetime, filled with postcard-perfect destinations and new friends (because you're bound to meet a travel buddy or two after 100-plus days on a ship). If an around-the-world cruise is at the top of your travel list, you'll want to book sooner rather than later — these journeys frequently sell out because many cruise lines only offer a limited number of sailings.

Here are ten of the best around-the-world cruises you can take in 2023 and 2024.

World Cruises

World cruises typically depart in January and last approximately 100 nights, though there are some world cruises that are longer or depart later in the year. They are available in their entirety, or in segments of about 10 to 90 nights.

Instead, price breaks come in the form of early booking offers, past-passenger deals, and additional discounts which apply only to customers of the largest sellers of cruises. As the largest cruise seller in the world, Vacations To Go has access to all of these special rates.

The 5 best destinations you can visit on a Norwegian Cruise Line ship

Gene Sloan

Thinking of booking a cruise with Norwegian Cruise Line ? You have a lot of choices. The Miami-based line operates vessels in almost every corner of the world, with a wide range of itineraries in many destinations.

You'll find Norwegian ships everywhere from the Caribbean and the Bahamas to Europe, Asia and Australia. The line is also a big player in Hawaii.

For more cruise guides, news and tips, sign up for TPG's cruise newsletter.

In addition, Norwegian is particularly known for cruises to Bermuda out of Boston and New York City, and it offers Canada and New England cruises regularly. It also operates some Panama Canal sailings and trips from the West Coast of the U.S. to the Mexican Riviera.

In North America, Norwegian ships sail from a relatively wide range of home ports, including Baltimore; Boston; New York City; Miami and Tampa; Galveston, Texas; San Juan, Puerto Rico; New Orleans; San Diego, Los Angeles and San Francisco; Seattle; Honolulu; Vancouver, British Columbia; Quebec City and Quebec in Canada; and Seward, Alaska.

Here is a look at the best destinations you can visit on a Norwegian Cruise Line ship.

around the world cruise ncl

Some of Norwegian's most exciting itineraries are in Europe, where the line is a significant player. It offers a wide range of itineraries in the Mediterranean and across northern Europe.

Norwegian will typically deploy around half of its 19 ships to the continent from spring to fall, making Europe its biggest focus for more than half the year. Norwegian also sometimes offers Europe cruises in the winter — albeit typically with just one ship.

Norwegian's Mediterranean sailings provide the chance to see such iconic destinations as Barcelona in Spain; and Florence, Rome and Naples in Italy in a single cruise. Or, you can sign up for a Mediterranean cruise that focuses on the Greek Islands.

In northern Europe, Norwegian will take you to such famed Baltic cities as Stockholm; Tallinn, Estonia; and Helsinki in a single sailing.

In past years, such Baltic trips have also included a multiday call at St. Petersburg, Russia — traditionally the highlight of any Baltic sailings. However, like all major cruise lines, Norwegian pulled St. Petersburg from Baltic itineraries in response to Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

As of the publishing of this guide, Norwegian had opened bookings for all of its Baltic sailing through late 2025, and St. Petersburg remains off the schedule for all of them. The line hasn't said when it might return to St. Petersburg.

For those looking to explore northern Europe, Norwegian also offers itineraries that zero in on Iceland, Ireland and the United Kingdom.

Norwegian's Europe voyages range widely in length from just four nights to a whopping 19 nights (for a repositioning cruise itinerary that begins in San Juan, Puerto Rico, and ends in the European city of Lisbon).

Among the longest sailings that Norwegian offers that focus solely on European stops is a one-way trips between Reykjavik, Iceland, and Oslo, Norway, that includes a wide range of stops in Greenland, Iceland, Denmark's Faroe Islands and Norway.

In Northern Europe, Norwegian ships mostly sail out of Amsterdam, Stockholm, Copenhagen, England's Southampton and Reykjavík in Iceland.

In the Mediterranean, the line's hubs are Barcelona; Civitavecchia (the port for Rome) and Trieste (near Venice) in Italy; Piraeus (the port for Athens) in Greece; and Istanbul.

Norwegian isn't the biggest player in Alaska cruises. The giants of cruising to Alaska are Princess Cruises and Holland America , two brands that are sister lines to each other and control a large percentage of the market.

Still, Norwegian typically sends three to five vessels to Alaska every summer, and its big, activity-filled ships are a popular pick with families looking to visit the destination.

The Alaska cruise season is a short one, lasting roughly from April to late October.

For 2024, Norwegian plans to deploy four ships to the Alaska market for the full season:

  • Norwegian Encore : Norwegian's biggest vessel will operate seven-night voyages to Alaska round trip out of Seattle. It will call at the Alaska towns of Skagway, Juneau and Ketchikan, plus Victoria, British Columbia. It will also visit Alaska's Glacier Bay National Park for glacier viewing.
  • Norwegian Sun: This ship will operate a mix of nine- to 10-night sailings to Alaska out of Seattle. The list of port calls varies based on the length of the trips.
  • Norwegian Bliss : The 3,958-passenger vessel will operate seven-night voyages to Alaska round trip out of Seattle. On most sailings, it will call at Sitka, Juneau, Ketchikan and Icy Strait Point in Alaska, plus Victoria, British Columbia. It will also visit Alaska's Endicott Arm for glacier viewing. Some sailings at the start and end of the season substitute a visit to Skagway and Glacier Bay National Park for the stops in Sitka and Icy Strait Point, and drop the visit to Endicott Arm.
  • Norwegian Jewel. The 2,330-passenger ship will operate one-way voyages to Alaska between Vancouver, British Columbia, and Seward, Alaska. The trips typically include stops in Juneau, Skagway and Ketchikan, plus a visit to either Glacier Bay National Park or Icy Strait Point.

In recent years, the 1,972-passenger Norwegian Spirit also has spent its summers sailing in Alaska, but most of its Alaska voyages for 2024 were canceled as a result of the vessel being chartered to another company (Norwegian still is marketing two unusual one-way voyages to Alaska on Norwegian Spirit that will take place at the start of the 2024 season — the first a 16-night trip to Alaska that starts in Honolulu on April 22 and ends in Vancouver; the second an 18-night trip that starts May 8 in Vancouver and ends in Tokyo).

The appeal of the one-way sailings on Norwegian Jewel is that they can be combined with Norwegian-organized land tours of Alaska lasting from three to six days to create 10- to 13-night "cruisetours."

The land tour portion of such trips brings visits to such well-known interior Alaska locations as Denali National Park and the town of Fairbanks.

The Caribbean and the Bahamas

around the world cruise ncl

The Caribbean and the Bahamas have always been a big area of operations for Norwegian. In fact, for a long time, the regions were so much the focus that the line included "Caribbean" in its name. Up until 1987, Norwegian was known as Norwegian Caribbean Line.

These days, Norwegian usually keeps just two of its 19 vessels in the Caribbean and the Bahamas year-round (in recent years, the year-round ships have been Norwegian Sky and Norwegian Escape, both sailing to the Caribbean and the Bahamas from Florida ports). However, it really ramps things up in the region in the winter, when it deploys a large portion of its ships to the Caribbean and the Bahamas.

Norwegian currently has 15 of its 19 ships scheduled to sail to the Caribbean and the Bahamas for at least part of 2024 — including its newest and most advanced ship, the 3,195-passenger Norwegian Viva.

Related: I've sailed on nearly every Norwegian ship. Here are my first impressions of Norwegian Prima

Norwegian offers a broad range of Caribbean and Bahamas itineraries from more than half a dozen home ports. If you're looking for something short, the line has you covered in the form of lots of quick, three- and four-night trips from Miami to the Bahamas.

It also offers an abundance of seven-night sailings to Caribbean and Bahamian ports, as well as a handful of longer trips in the region that range from nine to 14 nights.

At the core of the line's Caribbean and Bahamas program are its seven-night sailings, which break down into three broad categories:

  • Eastern Caribbean voyages
  • Western Caribbean voyages
  • Southern Caribbean voyages

A typical seven-night Norwegian sailing to the Eastern Caribbean includes stops in St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands; Tortola, British Virgin Islands; Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic; and Great Stirrup Cay, Norwegian's private island in the Bahamas.

Norwegian's seven Western Caribbean voyages will typically include a visit to Roatan, Honduras; Harvest Caye, Belize; and Costa Maya and Cozumel in Mexico.

The line's Southern Caribbean itineraries will often bring visits to Aruba, Bonaire, Curacao, St. Lucia and St. Kitts. They typically begin and end in San Juan, Puerto Rico.

When sailing to the Caribbean, Norwegian ships generally sail out of Miami, Port Canaveral and Tampa in Florida; and San Juan, Puerto Rico. The line also offers Caribbean sailings out of Baltimore, Galveston, New Orleans, New York City and, occasionally, Panama City, Panama, and La Romana, Dominican Republic.

Norwegian is the undisputed leader in Hawaii cruises. Most cruise lines that offer sailings to Hawaii only offer a limited number of such trips during a few months each year. Norwegian, by contrast, offers sailings around the Hawaiian Islands out of Honolulu every week of the year — the only cruise line in the world to do so.

Norwegian's Hawaii voyages are also more intensely focused on Hawaii than the Hawaii trips offered by most other lines. This is because Norwegian offers its Hawaii cruises on one of the only cruise ships in the world that meets the regulatory requirements allowing it to spend all its time in the destination.

Norwegian's Hawaii trips take place on Norwegian's 2,150-passenger Pride of America, which has the rare distinction of being both U.S.-flagged and U.S.-crewed. By law, only such a vessel can cruise full-time in Hawaii without regularly traveling long distances to foreign ports.

An iconic presence in Hawaii, Pride of America has been permanently dedicated to the archipelago since its debut in 2005. It offers a repeating seven-night itinerary that begins each Saturday in Honolulu and brings the chance to visit four different Hawaiian islands on a single seven-night trip.

Beginning and ending on the island of Oahu, the itinerary includes two days each on the islands of Maui, Kauai and Hawaii. The two-day visit to Maui involves an overnight stay at the port of Kahului.

The two-day visit to Kauai involves an overnight stay at the port of Nawiliwili. The two-day visit to Hawaii is split between a call at Hilo and a call at Kona.

around the world cruise ncl

Norwegian usually deploys two ships on Bermuda runs every year — one out of New York City and one out of Boston.

In both cases, the sailings offered are mostly seven nights in length and include a two-night stay in Bermuda.

For 2024, Norwegian will devote one of its biggest ships, the 3,782-passenger Norwegian Joy, to Bermuda. It will run out of New York. The line's 2,344-passenger Norwegian Gem will sail to Bermuda out of Boston.

In addition, the line's 3,903-passenger Norwegian Getaway will operate a handful of sailings to Bermuda out of New York during the early part of 2024 that include stops in the Caribbean (something that is relatively rare), and the 3,903-passenger Norwegian Breakaway will operate a few sailings to Bermuda out of New York toward the end of 2024.

The line's relatively new Norwegian Prima will operate a single Bermuda sailing out of New York at the end of 2024.

While most of Norwegian's Bermuda sailings are seven nights in length, the line also sometimes offers a few shorter four- and five-night Bermuda sailings and, occasionally, a longer, nine-night Bermuda sailing.

Note that the shorter Bermuda sailings can offer very little time in the country, sometimes as few as nine hours.

Bottom line

Norwegian offers a wide range of itineraries in destinations around the world, from the Caribbean to Asia. However, you'll find the most choices among Norwegian itineraries in the Caribbean and Europe.

The line is also well-known for voyages around Hawaii and to Bermuda. Its Hawaii sailings, in particular, are something of a rarity in the industry.

Cruise to the Heart of a Destination with Norwegian Cruise Line

around the world cruise ncl

Sponsored by Norwegian Cruise Line

Freedom and flexibility flow through the fleet of Norwegian Cruise Line (NCL). From the design of the ships to the port-rich itineraries, NCL offers a more relaxed cruising style that appeals to Australians.

Instead of following a traditional schedule, there are no fixed dining times, set dining tables or formal dress codes. The company pioneered this concept more than two decades ago, calling it Freestyle Cruising, and it continues to break boundaries every year.

Most notably, stunning new ships are launched almost annually. The first two vessels of its Prima class, Norwegian Prima and Norwegian Viva , debuted in Europe in 2022 and 2023. Next year, Norwegian Aqua will be the first in its Prima Plus class, followed by three more ships on order from 2026 to 2028.

These latest ships are distinguished by their wide-open spaces, thoughtful design and new experiences such as a hybrid rollercoaster and waterslide called Aqua Slidecoaster, and a digital sports complex with an interactive LED floor that transforms into a nightclub.

The spacious accommodation also stands apart, with stylish studios for solo travellers, club balcony suites, spa suites, and The Haven by Norwegian, the luxurious ship-within-a-ship area with exclusive spaces and amenities.

Uniquely positioned as upper contemporary, the line delivers superior guest service and exceptional dining and entertainment. Combined with the innovative ships and diverse itineraries, NCL offers some of the best value at sea.

NCL Offers Port-Intensive Itineraries and Overnights in Many Destinations

A visit to the Blue Lagoon Iceland is one of many shore excursions offered by NCL

NCL regards every moment on land as special as the time spent at sea, ensuring guests can discover more in each location, from ancient cities to tropical islands.

With 20 ships to choose from, the global programme expands to more than 450 destinations. The wide range of port-rich itineraries include many late evening stays or overnight calls, allowing a more leisurely way to explore the local culture and attractions.

A bay in Maui Hawaii

NCL also offers several cruises not offered by any other cruise line. One of these highlights is an exclusive Hawaiian itinerary that departs every week of the year, so it can fit into anyone’s calendar.

The European programme is particularly comprehensive, covering the Mediterranean, Canary Islands, Greek Islands, Northern Europe and the Baltic, Greenland and Iceland, as well as transatlantic voyages that venture to Morocco and the Caribbean.

Europe Cruises Depart From 21 Different Ports

Norwegian Prima Cinque Terre Italy

NCL's Europe itineraries explore iconic destinations , visiting a new port nearly every day, with overnights and late stays on many sailings.

Norwegian Viva, the 2nd vessel in the new Norwegian Prima Class, returns to the Mediterranean in May 2024. This innovative ship joins 11 others in the NCL fleet, offering over 350 itineraries as part of the 2024-2025 Europe season .

Spending an average of 10.5 hours in port and fewer days at sea, guests can experience more of the beauty and culture of European cities, with over 160 ports of call.

A couple in Barcelona on a NCL shore excursion

Popular itineraries include a classic route through Spain, France and Italy on a 9-day cruise from Barcelona on Norwegian Escape, or a 7-day Greek Isles cruise to Santorini, Rhodes and Mykonos, from Athens (Piraeus) on Norwegian Viva.

Further north, a 10-day cruise to Greenland and Iceland , roundtrip from Reykjavik, is offered on Norwegian Star, or a 11-day cruise to Iceland, Norway and Belgium sails from Southampton, UK, on Norwegian Prima.

Every year from 2008 to 2023, NCL has been named Europe’s Leading Cruise Line at the prestigious World Travel Awards.

NCL is the Only Cruise Line That Visits Four Hawai’i Islands in Seven Days

Stand up paddle boarders with Pride of America in Hawai'i

As the only cruise line that visits four islands in seven days , NCL's Hawaiian itinerary is unmatched. The US-flagged, 2,186-passenger Pride of America conveniently departs year-round from Honolulu every Saturday.

This is the ultimate inter-island adventure, from famous surf beaches to breathtaking landscapes and shore excursions exploring the local culture. Guests can also learn about Hawaiian life through the eyes of native ambassadors on board the ship.

A waterfall in Hilo Hawaii

Overnight stays in Maui and the ‘garden island’ of Kaua’i allow extra time to experience dinner ashore, sunset drinks or the tropical nightlife. Other ports of call include Kona, renowned for its snorkel-friendly bays, historical sites and a lively waterfront, and Hilo, blessed with rainforests, waterfalls and Volcanoes National Park.

The spacious suites and balconies on Pride of America are ideal for whale-watching or witnessing Kilauea Volcano. A wide range of restaurants includes Italian, French and authentic Hawaiian cuisine, while the nightlife can be enjoyed at Pink's Champagne Bar, the New Orleans-inspired Mardi Gras Cabaret Lounge & Nightclub, or Waikiki Bar, specialising in cocktails.

NCL’s Award Winning Fleet Has 20 Contemporary Ships

The 20 contemporary ships allow travellers to choose the best one to match their preferences, while also enjoying fleetwide features of innovative design, stylish comfort, and cutting-edge technology.

All ships have spacious, private accommodation, with many cabins having ocean views, and the added luxury of balconies, or guests can upgrade to the most luxurious suites in The Haven, NCL’s exclusive ‘ship-within-a-ship’ concept (pictured above).

The line is also remains a market leader in solo cruising, winning Cruise Critic's Editors' Picks Awards for "Best for Solo Travellers" in 2023, with dedicated single-occupancy staterooms and communal lounges for solo travellers to mingle.

NCL Offers Spectacular Dining And Entertainment

Dancers performing Burn the Floor on Norwegian Getaway

More than just a mode of transportation, each ship is a destination in itself, offering a host of complimentary activities, entertainment options and dining experiences.

NCL spoils its guests with culinary delights at any time of day or night. From casual bites to gourmet feasts, passengers can indulge in cuisines from around the world, around the clock. Chefs prepare your meal in front of you at Teppanyaki, a hibachi-style restaurant; savour the seafood at Ocean Blue, or try a Brazilian-style steak restaurant, Moderno.

Diners toast in Onda by Scarpetta on Norwegian Encore

The dozens of restaurants and bars onboard serve carefully crafted drinks and an extensive wine list. Or step up your evening entertainment with award-winning shows, live music and comedy performances.

NCL Offers Incredible Value With a Number of Inclusions

No Hidden Costs - Gratuities Included

One of the distinguishing factors that sets NCL apart is its transparent inclusion of gratuities in the cruise fare. Rather than hiding this cost, passengers know upfront that tips for crew are included, so there is no concern about unexpected fees and charges.

Reduced Deposits and Added Value

Whether travelling this year or planning ahead for 2025 and 2026, your dream cruise can be secured for a reduced deposit of just $149 per person. The best value can be found by booking the line’s Free At Sea promotion, which adds an extra layer of value with an exceptional array of inclusions.

I would agree; I wish they would do one with a number of sectors available.   Especially with more ports throughout the world unlike Princess which does too many sea days and ports in Europe.

3,000+ Club

great idea, and even though we usually book a haven suite, ive  checked world cruises on other cruise  lines,  but even an indoor cabin (which i would never consider. i'd rather stay home)  is  way, way  WAY out of my budget,

i never presume to tell anyone else how to spend their money, but if you can afford this more power to you

@complawyer

We cruise to meet others and to visit new places so we would rather have 80 days a year Inside rather than 20 in a Suite..   That way we spend about the same and see more and meet more.   As we are getting older and are towards the end of our cruising we could afford one really big spend.   It will be a way of us spending our money and not having to leave it to our children!!!!   Anyway they earn, on an annual basis, far more than we ever did when in full time work.

Rob_H

World cruises can be simulated with what we call "serial cruising" - lots of back to back sailings, as a one-way voyage across part of the world.  It's usually more in depth than the world cruises, which rush around and skip things.

Our last long cruise was London to Singapore at the end of 2019.  Two back-to-back cruises from London and around the Med on the Spirit (very few sea days), change ship same day at Rome to the Jade, then carry on to the Middle East and Asia (two more back to back cruises).  65 days in total, around 40 ports (some duplicated, some overnight stays).  And it was below $100 USD per person per day, including fees and service charges (inside cabin).

Probably can't get those sort of prices again anytime soon, but there are still plenty of longer cruises that could be strung together, if the seasons are right. Even something simple like a caribbean cruise or two followed by a transatlantic followed by a couple of Med cruises (then a short flight if needed to add some UK/Norway/Baltics as it gets warmer) can still be several months and very varied.

Some of the cruises we've booked in 2022 and 2023 are back-to-back, most are sequences of 4 or more cruises on one or two ships.  Unlikely to sail exactly as currently planned (not at all for some), so our plans are flexible.

Rob

100$ a day, do you meen to say it was like 50$ a person? Sounds like a very good deal. I wonder what this price included daily. I mean how much money you spend on other things on board plays even more important part of that thing casue usually you spend on board more than you pay for the cruise itself

You can book a world cruise on NCL's sister company, Oceania, which has done a world cruise on Insignia for a number of years.

That would be a great deal!  No, as I said it was under $100 per PERSON per day (under $200 per day for the cabin).. We rarely spend much on board, so not very good customers despite going on lots of cruises! NCL don't make much profit from us. That included fare, port fees and taxes, service charges, offset by some travel agent OBC and shareholder OBC.

We get the two platinum speciality meals (x4 sailings) so don't need to buy that, don't buy much alcohol, and the tours we did take were mostly independent (booked in advance for places like Israel and Egypt).  Yes, a thousand or two total in tourist expenses each on top of the fare but very little of it on board, mostly on locally-brought tours.

The one currently offered by MSC is actually very reasonable when you break it down by price per day. Last time I checked it was around $200/pp/day for a balcony and included the drink package plus free laundry services. If I had the vacation time I would book it in a heartbeat. I've yet to book a cruise at that low of a price/day rate.

Those are the phony brochure fares. Not one cabin is ever sold at that price. The actual per passenger fares are less than half what is stated there as Oceania always sells at "2 for 1" plus additional "discounts". Actual selling prices start at $49,999 per person cruise only for the cheapest inside cabin and go to 187,999 for the most expensive suite.

It also completely skips Indonesia & Australia/New Zealand, which are must-do's to me if I'm literally traveling around the world. I'd much rather traverse from the US across the dateline though South Pacific waters, than titanic sinking iceberg infested waters in the Bering Straight.

They change the itinerary every year. it's impossible to cover every destination someone might be interested in within the 180 days. Personally I like this itinerary as it gets to a lot of destinations I haven't seen yet.

Wines Around The World: NCL’s New Loyalty Benefit Reviewed

by Prof. Cruise · September 12, 2022

A glass of red wine with a booklet siting next to it with text that reads: NCL's Latitudes Rewards Program. Wines Around the World. A complimentary wine tasting available for those platinum and above.

Introduction

I know less about wine than nuclear physics; I care less about wine than NFL football (even though I live within walking distance of the Seahawks stadium, I can’t name a single player); and I’d rather drink the juices of a wrung out mop after a weekend shift at Waffle House.

Please forgive me for everything I just said (having managed to offend 100% of my readers) and trust that if I liked the Wines Around the World wine tasting, you probably will too!

Wines Around the World: A New Latitudes Loyalty Benefit for those Platinum and Above

While this new Latitudes benefit offered to those Platinum and above on NCL has technically been around for months (it was added as part of the revamped loyalty program), it wasn’t being offered due to Covid restrictions. But I’m happy to report that as of September 2022 it’s now available on most ships and I was lucky enough to be on one of the very first sailings to offer it!

NCL's latitudes rewards new loyalty program tier benefits as of 2022. With "Wines Around the World" circled.

How to Book the Wines Around the World Loyalty Benefit

While Wines Around the World is complimentary for those Platinum and above, it’s required that you register in advance. Stop by the CruiseNext desk on embarkation day to find out when and where it will take place and to sign up.

The CruiseNext desk on the Norwegian Sun where I signed up for the Wines Around the World wine tasting for Platinum Latitudes members and above.

You’ll receive a paper confirmation with the date, time, and location…

around the world cruise ncl

…but your name will also be added to a list and checked off when you arrive at the tasting. On my sailing the event took place on our first sea day at 11am in La Cucina (the Italian specialty restaurant).

The Deets on Wines Around the World

After checking in and a brief introduction to what we (there were 8 participants at my tasting) could expect…

A photo of a crew member holding a wine glass as he introduces the "Wines Around the World" wine tasting loyalty benefit.

…we were each given a wine glass, a booklet, and a pen. The purpose of the booklet was so we could take notes on each of the tasted wines. There was a page for each of the eight wines and each page included a space for the name of the wine, the type of wine (white, red, rose, or sparkling), the region where the wine was produced, notes on the characteristics of the wine, and an overall rating (with up to five stars).

A booklet provided as part of the "Wines Around the World" wine tasting program on NCL. The booklet is used to take notes about each wine.

While several participants filled their booklets, mine remained totally blank (shameful for a former college professor – don’t tell any of my students!) and I returned it to the table afterward to be used by someone who didn’t wonder why the bottles of wine weren’t using their “legs” to run toward someone who would properly appreciate their musical ability (I dunno, maybe only dogs can hear floral notes?).

Four photos of two different wines from four different countries and text that reads: Sample 8 wines from 4 different countries

There were four different stations set up, representing four different countries: Italy, France, Argentina, and the United States. We learned about and tasted two wines, a red and white, from each country, for a total of eight wines. Pours were generous – I joked with a new friend I made at the event saying, “I’m normally a cheap drunk, but today I’m a free drunk!”. We were able to rinse our wine glasses out after each pour and crunchy breadsticks were provided as a palate cleanser.

A glass of red wine sitting on a ledge with a booklet in front of it that reads: Wines Around the World.

For each wine we learned about where the grapes were grown and how the location affected the characteristics of the wine. Information about acidity, tannins, sweetness and alcohol content was also provided. And we were told the price per bottle and by the glass (if it was available onboard by the glass). The tasting lasted about 30 minutes. There was a sales pitch at the end about pre-ordering bottles of wine for the remainder of the cruise, but it was brief and low-pressure.

Conclusion: What I Thought of the New Wines Around the World Loyalty Benefit

I loved it! I learned a lot about wine (which I had no intention of applying and promptly forgot). I enjoyed a nice buzz and an excuse to overeat at the buffet (I’m just trying to soak up all this alcohol!). And I left with several new friends (who regularly “blessed my heart” when I did inappropriate things like dipping a breadstick in my wine in an attempt to enhance the buttery undertones). Overall, I found this to be an excellent addition to NCL’s loyalty program which is, in my opinion, the best at sea. If you’re Platinum or above, I strongly recommend you try it on your next cruise. And if you’re not Platinum or above, I strongly suggest you use this as an excuse to cruise more! And with that…

Class Dismissed.

Homework (10 points) : If you’ve tried Wines Around the World, share your thoughts to the comments. If you haven’t tried it yet, are you looking forward to trying it? And if you hate wine and are wondering what non-awful drinks are available on NCL, you can check out all the bar menus HERE .

Launched in 2010, Norwegian Epic was the first cruise ship in the industry to feature studio accommodations for solo travelers. Norwegian Cruise Line offers this category on nine of the 19 ships in its fleet, including the newest ship, Norwegian Viva. These cabins, at an average size of 100 square feet, are designed and priced with the solo traveler in mind. They have no single supplements – and studio rooms on board Norwegian Bliss even boast virtual windows.

Guests of the studios get access to the private Studio Lounge. In this exclusive space, you can socialize with other solo travelers and enjoy complimentary refreshments. There are also singles meetups throughout the voyage and plenty of fun-filled onboard activities to mingle with like-minded cruisers. Solo travelers can check out all the fun for singles on Norwegian Viva this winter on a cruise to the Caribbean , or in spring 2024 as the ship sets sail for the Mediterranean .

MSC Cruises offers interior and balcony solo cabins for single cruisers on its Meraviglia-class ships: the MSC Meraviglia, Bellissima, Grandiosa, Virtuosa and the newest vessel in the fleet, MSC Euribia. The second-newest ship, MSC World Europa, has 28 cabins – 10 Studio Interior and 18 Studio Ocean View staterooms – designed specifically for solo travelers. MSC World America, set to debut in 2025, will also feature the solo studio staterooms.

During voyages with MSC Cruises , single cruisers are invited to a complimentary, hosted cocktail party to mix and mingle with other solo travelers. The daily program is also an excellent source to discover additional activities, entertainment and opportunities to meet other cruisers. You'll have onboard special events like the themed 70s-inspired Flower Party and the White Party, where the ship is decked out in festive white decor and guests don their best white attire. In addition, there are various sports tournaments, or you can show off your culinary expertise during a MasterChef competition.

MSC's Caribbean and Bahamas cruises departing from Miami and New York City feature an overnight visit to Ocean Cay, the line's private island and marine reserve. While there, singles can participate in fun-filled evening activities like a Champagne Sunset Cruise or a glow paddleboarding excursion in the lagoon, then attend the lively Luna Libre Party and the lighthouse show.

Three of Holland America Line's newest ships each offer 12 solo cabins to accommodate single travelers: the Pinnacle-class Nieuw Amsterdam, Rotterdam and Konigsdam. These ocean view staterooms range in size from 127 to 172 square feet and feature the same amenities as the double occupancy cabins but with a double bed. The cruise line's Single Staterooms are priced for one person. If a guest chooses to book a different stateroom, single supplements for double occupancy cabins are as much as 100% over the standard fare, depending on the voyage and the cabin category.

Long committed to solo travelers, the line offers many activities where guests can meet other singles such as wine tastings, cocktail mixers, exercise classes, daily quizzes, sports challenges and more. If you're a solo traveler and a member of AARP, Holland America is now the exclusive cruise benefit provider to AARP's members. Solo cruisers will have access to an AARP member-only onboard credit that ranges from $50 to $200, depending on the itinerary and stateroom category.

For itineraries, Holland America's Alaska cruises and cruisetours are perfect for solo travelers, offering many opportunities to connect with fellow cruisers. Another favorite for singles is the line's fall voyages sailing from Boston to Québec City or Montreal.

Royal Caribbean International

Royal Caribbean International features studio staterooms on select ships that range in size from 101 to 199 square feet. These solo accommodations include interior rooms, virtual balcony staterooms and a super studio ocean view stateroom with a balcony. The cabins do not carry the single supplement fee singles encounter when booking other types of staterooms, making them an attractive option when traveling alone.

Once on board the ship, solo cruisers will have countless options to engage and socialize with other travelers. When it comes to dining with Royal Caribbean , make a reservation at the Japanese restaurant Teppanyaki for an entertaining meal with new friends, or join fellow foodies for the intimate Chef's Table experience (the dining venues vary by ship). Singles can also participate in onboard activities like trivia contests, drink seminars, escape rooms, dance classes and pool parties.

If you need more thrills to stay busy and to meet people, Royal Caribbean's ships feature world-class shows and entertainment alongside adrenaline-pumping rides and attractions. If you're sailing in the Caribbean, there are plenty of opportunities to meet and chat with other passengers at the line's private island, Perfect Day at CocoCay.

Atlas Ocean Voyages

Luxury line Atlas Ocean Voyages offers single cruisers 183 square feet of beautifully appointed space in solo accommodations that come without single supplement fees. Single guests can also book other stateroom or suite categories with single supplements starting at 50% of the double occupancy price.

The line's three intimate yacht-style cruise ships – World Navigator, World Traveller and the new World Voyager, whose inaugural season begins in Antarctica in November 2023 – are all-inclusive . Meals at all the dining venues, premium beverages and wines, gratuities, culturally immersive excursions, and more are included in the fare. With fewer than 200 guests on board, there's an atmosphere of conviviality on these ships – especially when exploring remote destinations with like-minded and adventurous travelers during expeditions in Antarctica and the Arctic.

Celebrity Cruises' new Edge-class ships offer some of the best options for solo cruisers. In addition, Celebrity Apex has 24 solo cabins, and Celebrity Edge features 16 staterooms for individual guests. These one-person accommodations offer a minimum of 131 square feet of space and the same upscale amenities you'll find in other category staterooms on their ships. Solo guests can look for special promotions where the single supplement is waived on select Celebrity voyages throughout the year.

Once on board the vessel, check out the daily program for activities conducive to meeting others – like wine tastings, cocktail-making classes and more. You'll also enjoy thrilling top-notch entertainment around the ship in The Theatre, The Club and Eden. The line also runs promotions where solo cruisers can book double occupancy staterooms without paying a single supplement.

Activities and festival-like entertainment around the ships foster fast friendships. Diners will enjoy the interactive experience at Gunbae, the lively Korean barbecue venue. The "grog walk" is a fun pub stroll where solo sailors can join fellow mates while sipping and snacking their way through all the signature bars. For even more fun, check out the evening shipwide events such as the themed Scarlet Party, which features live music and immersive experiences. The line also hosts meetups for singles throughout each voyage.

Avalon Waterways

Avalon Waterways' river and small-ship cruises traverse waterways around the world, including in Europe, Asia, Africa and South America. The company waives the single supplement on a selection of staterooms, including its Panorama Suites, on select European and Asia departures. The company recommends booking early as the specially priced cabins do sell out. Solo travelers make up about 10% of the passengers on this river cruise line .

Avalon's fleet of Suite Ships operates in Europe and Southeast Asia and features cabins with a minimum of 172 square feet. About 80% of the staterooms are Panorama Suites, which have 200 feet of living space, beds with a view and the river cruise industry's only open-air balcony. With Avalon excursions, solo cruisers have opportunities to meet like-minded guests during immersive tours, cooking classes, wine tastings, yoga or fitness classes, biking or hiking trips, and more. Single guests can choose to dine at tables for just two people or ones that can accommodate up to eight passengers.

The 12 Best Water Safaris Around the World, From Antarctic Cruises to Botswana River Journeys

The term safari typically evokes images of dusty African savannahs and bouncy 4×4 rides in pursuit of the iconic Big Five—lion, leopard, rhinoceros, elephant, and African buffalo. While this classic game-drive ritual has its place, a different breed of water-based adventures is gaining momentum.

In Africa, swapping wheels for hulls can save time. In Rwanda, for instance, traveling aboard the Kivu Queen uBuranga , the first motorized houseboat on Lake Kivu, cuts travel time for gorilla trekking jaunts in the Volcanoes National Park or searching for chimpanzees in the Nyungwe Forest National Park. Both would take many hours by car. Plus it’s just a much more pleasant way to travel.

In other parts of the world, the only way to see marine wildlife is by boat. “Cruises are great for visiting more areas and seeing a variety of landscapes,” Allie Almario, the Galapagos and Amazon safari expert at Philadelphia-based Premier Tours, told Robb Report. “ Going by boat in the Amazon, for example, allows you to navigate the tributaries easily for access into some of its most remote areas.”

We’ve curated our favorite water trips to animal-laden lands, whether it’s traveling in a houseboat or go-anywhere expedition vessel, drifting along rivers or cruising to the world’s most remote polar regions. Accommodations range from intimate five-star island hideaways to brand-new superyachts to more communal, high-end river boats. What they share: A wildlife-focused itinerary that not only provides opportunities to witness water-dwelling species but also the diversity of fish and underwater mammals and wide-ranging bird species, all from the comfort of a luxurious floating camp.

Here are 12 of our favorites.

The Biggest Cruise News Stories of April

Posted: April 29, 2024 | Last updated: April 29, 2024

The temperatures are starting to heat up—and so is the cruise industry. From a return to pre-pandemic passenger numbers to a slew of new ships, these were the biggest cruise news stories of April 2024.

Rendering of the MSC World America, debuting in 2025.

Their story made headlines around the world: Eight travelers were late getting back to their cruise ship, the Norwegian Dawn, so they were <a href="https://www.travelpulse.com/news/cruise/passengers-stranded-on-african-island-after-norwegian-dawn-left-without-them">left behind</a> in the African island nation of São Tomé and Príncipe. They spent the next few days trying to catch up with the ship and eventually did so in Dakar, Senegal. The cruise line later agreed to reimburse the travelers for some of the costs they incurred while trying to meet back up with the ship.

Viking is <a href="https://www.travelpulse.com/news/cruise/viking-is-taking-steps-to-go-public">going public</a> and, this month, the cruise company shared <a href="https://www.travelpulse.com/news/river-cruise/viking-unveils-more-details-about-its-ipo">more details</a> about its forthcoming initial public offering. The price per share is expected to be between $21 and $25, and Viking will offer 44 million ordinary shares—for total IPO proceeds of up to $1.1 billion. The company will trade on the New York Stock Exchange under the symbol VIK.

After American Queen Voyages shut down in February, one big question remained: What would happen to the cruise line’s ships? Now, we know their fate. American Cruise Lines <a href="https://www.travelpulse.com/news/river-cruise/american-cruise-lines-buys-ships-from-shuttered-american-queen-voyages">bought four vessels</a> from the now-shuttered company: American Duchess, American Countess, American Express and American Queen. American Cruise Lines also bought some of American Queen Voyages’ other assets, including its business records, website domain names and trademarks.

February was a rollercoaster month for the cruise industry. While one cruise line was shutting down, others were celebrating record-breaking booking periods during wave season. In case you missed any of this month’s news, here are the top cruise stories of February 2024.

April was a big month for new ship announcements. Windstar Cruises will be adding <a href="https://www.travelpulse.com/news/cruise/windstar-cruises-is-adding-two-new-ships-to-its-fleet">two ships</a> to its fleet, Ponant is adding a <a href="https://www.travelpulse.com/news/cruise/ponant-is-adding-a-new-catamaran-to-its-fleet">new catamaran</a> and Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings plans to add <a href="https://www.travelpulse.com/news/cruise/norwegian-cruise-line-holdings-reveals-plans-for-long-term-fleet-expansion-and-enhanced-private-island-development">eight new ships</a> across its various brands. Abercromie & Kent will unveil a new <a href="https://www.travelpulse.com/news/tour-operators/abercombie-kent-to-unveil-peruvian-riverboat-next-year">Peruvian riverboat</a>. And, in addition to acquiring vessels from American Queen Voyages, American Cruise Lines is <a href="https://www.travelpulse.com/news/river-cruise/american-cruise-lines-is-building-two-new-ships-american-patriot-and-american-pioneer">building two new ships</a>.

Many under-construction ships reached key milestones this month, including <a href="https://www.travelpulse.com/news/cruise/msc-world-america-and-world-asia-celebrate-key-construction-milestones">MSC World America</a>, MSC World Asia and <a href="https://www.travelpulse.com/news/cruise/norwegian-cruise-line-celebrates-float-out-of-newest-ship-norwegian-aqua">Norwegian Aqua</a>. Cunard <a href="https://www.travelpulse.com/news/cruise/cunard-officially-welcomes-new-cruise-ship-queen-anne">took delivery of Queen Anne</a>, and Viking announced that its newest Nile River ship, Viking Sobek, will be <a href="https://www.travelpulse.com/news/river-cruise/vikings-newest-nile-river-ship-viking-sobek-will-be-ready-5-months-early">ready five months early</a>. The <a href="https://www.travelpulse.com/news/impacting-travel/most-popular-destinations-along-the-solar-eclipse-s-path-of-totality">total solar eclipse on April 8</a> wowed umbraphiles in North America. Cruise lines typically choose celebrities, pro athletes or travel industry professionals to serve as the godmother or godfather of a new ship. But, this month, Seabourn took a <a href="https://www.travelpulse.com/news/cruise/seabourn-names-australian-traditional-owners-as-newest-ship-s-godparents">unique approach</a>: The luxury line selected Australia’s Wunambal Gaambera Traditional Owners as godparents of <a href="https://www.travelpulse.com/news/cruise/seabourn-pursuit-new-ultra-luxury-expedition-ship-unveils-masterfully-curated-art-collection">Seabourn Pursuit</a>. I worked on cruises for 3 years. Here are 6 things I'd never do on board.

  • I used to work on cruises. After many days at sea, there are things I'd never do on a cruise .
  • I never wear my room key around my neck and try to avoid misnaming the ship.
  • I never buy the drink package or pay for meal upgrades in the main dining room.

Insider Today

I've sailed around the world as a cruise-ship employee , and now I enjoy cruising as a passenger.

I love the salty sea air, waking up in a new country, and lazy days by the pool, but a week at sea could get more complicated this year with cruises predicted to be in high demand .

While fighting a little harder to secure a prime seat on the pool deck, you may as well also avoid some rookie mistakes.

Here are six things I'd never do on a cruise after working on them for three years.

Pay for upgrades in the main dining room

Typically, main dining room meals are included in the cost of a cruise. But in recent years, it's become common for cruise lines to charge guests extra if they want to upgrade to "supplementary" items like lobster or certain steaks.

I know $12 may not seem like much for a steak or lobster tail at dinner, but the cost of the cruise is supposed to include your food.

So, even though I enjoy lobster, I stick with the items without the upcharges.

Buy the drink package

I enjoy a piña colada by the pool or a Manhattan while listening to a jazz set after dinner. Even so, it doesn't make sense for me to pay in advance for 12 to 15 cocktails a day.

I've done the math on typical unlimited drink packages , and the cost simply isn't worth it for me.

This is especially true with a port-heavy itinerary. If I've gone ashore to explore all day, that means I'm not sidled up to the bar slurping down alcoholic slushies.

Related stories

I prefer to buy as I go and take advantage of happy hour and other drink specials that are available on certain cruise lines. I also check the beverage policy in advance and bring on my own wine, if allowed.

Touch shared contact surfaces with my fingers

Fellow guests will never see me touching the elevator buttons with my fingertips. Knuckles and elbows do the trick.

Some cruise lines are better than others at wiping down commonly touched surfaces, but I don't take any chances. I avoid touching things others frequently touch, and I wash my hands frequently.

This strategy has worked for me, as I have never contracted norovirus, even when it was running rampant on a ship I was on. It's quite contagious and can linger on your fingertips even after using hand sanitizer . I'd definitely rather be safe than sorry.

Wear my room key around my neck

I never walk around the ship with my room key around my neck, and I especially never do this when on land.

There are two reasons for this. First, I see many passengers using the room keys dangling from their necks to flaunt their cruise loyalty status . It just looks pretentious.

The sophisticated cruisers with the highest status, with the most days at sea, never show off their fancy room keys.

That's because they know the more important reason — safety. In port, that room key bouncing off your chest looks like an invitation to be robbed. It screams, "I have money! Come and take it from me."

Misname the ship

English is a funny language that has its quirks. Naming conventions make that even more complicated.

Ships have proper names, and so do not require a definite article. For example, "Tomorrow I am embarking on Discovery Princess," or "I enjoyed scenic cruising on MS Westerdam."

If you want to look like a savvy sailor, learn to drop the "the!"

Plan my port-day itinerary so tight that I may not make it back to the ship on time

Oh, the recurring nightmares I've had about not making it back to the ship on time during a port day.

I've never missed a sail away, but I have cut it too close at times and have had to run down a pier or two. Just recently, as a passenger, my taxi driver got lost returning our group to the port at night.

When I realized how late we were going to be, I forked over $8 per minute to be connected with the ship. I pleaded with them to wait for us. It was a sprint through the port to get back on and we received quite a scolding from the first officer.

That time, we got lucky. In the future, I'll be giving myself more time than I think I need to make it back.
