As the name suggests, ArtScience Museum™ at Marina Bay Sands ® beautifully fuses art and science to tell fascinating stories. This premier venue houses a constantly changing line-up of major international touring exhibitions, brought in through collaborations with organisations such as the American Museum of Natural History, the Smithsonian Institute and world-renowned furniture designer Herman Miller.

Where Art meets Science

The ArtScience Museum™ has housed renowned exhibitions that push the boundaries of science, technology and knowledge. “The Deep”, an exhibition on deep-sea life, saw the largest collection of abyssal creatures ever displayed in Southeast Asia, and “The Nobel Prize: Ideas Changing the World” showcased how Nobel Prize-awarded efforts have shaped and continue to change our world.

Other exhibitions at the ArtScience Museum™ have also featured a multitude of works from the Arts and creative fields—from multimedia art pieces by Eric Valli that reflect life along the Yangtze River, to an insight into the art of animation with DreamWorks Animation: The Exhibition.

The museum is also home to the permanent exhibition, FUTURE WORLD: Where Art Meets Science. Visitors can immerse themselves in a dynamic 1,500-square-metre digital universe of interactive art installations revolving around the themes of Nature, Town, Park and Science.

Eye-catching design

Not only does the museum push boundaries with its retinue of world-class exhibitions, its design architecture is equally as iconic. The museum’s structure is meant to symbolise the welcoming hand of Singapore with ten fingers. The tip of each “finger” filters in natural light to showcase exhibits in the best light. There are 21 galleries spread over three storeys with a total floor space of about 50,000 square feet.

The most famous is the permanent exhibition Future World: Where Art Meets Science, a collaboration with art collective teamLab, and an Instagrammable must-see for travellers. There’s also Digital Light Canvas at The Shoppes, brought to you by the same team, a colourful world of flora and fauna brought to life by creative installations.

Designed by architect Moshe Safdie, the ArtScience Museum boasts a unique façade that has sparked debate among its patrons: Is it a lotus? Is it a hand with 10 “fingers”?

Regardless of interpretation, the ambiguous shape has not only drawn in many curious travellers but also has a mind-blowing function — the roof actually collects rainwater and light for the museum.

But its ingenious blueprint is only the tip of the iceberg. Inside, the ArtScience Museum accommodates intriguing masterpieces, making it a must-see attraction in Singapore and one of the city’s iconic cultural spots.

Since February 2011, it has hosted big names, including Patricia Piccinini, Leonardo da Vinci, Salvador Dalí, Andy Warhol, and Vincent Van Gogh. Plus, staying true to its name, the museum goes beyond art. It also features scientific exhibitions that display big data, marine biology, and space exploration.

The museum is open daily from 10am to 7pm. You can enter the premises until 6pm.

Workshops and guided tours are only available from Tuesdays to Thursdays at 10.15am, 11.30am, 2.45pm, and 4pm.

4. How do I get to the ArtScience Museum Singapore?

The museum is located at 6 Bayfront Avenue, Singapore. You can get there via MRT, bus, car, taxi, or boat taxi.

If you’re taking the train, you may alight at Exits B, C, or D of Bayfront Station, all of which are within 20-minute walking distance of the museum.

The closest exit is Exit B, which is only seven minutes away via The Shoppes at Marina Bay Sands. Those taking the bus can get off at the Marina Bay Sands Theatre Bus Stop, an eight-minute walk to ArtScience Museum.

Meanwhile, those who opt to ride a boat taxi from the Singapore River can get off at the Bayfront North WaterB kiosk, which is a two-minute walk from the museum.

MBS recommends visitors allot at least one hour for each exhibition. But you can, of course, take as long as you can. If you are visiting the museum as a group, prepare to meet a Museum Ambassador who will orient you before you tour the place.

If you prefer to take the bus, routes 97, 97E, 133, 133M, 502, 518, and 106 will bring you near the museum. Alight either at the Marina Bay Sands Theatre Bus Stop , followed by an 8-minute walk , or at Bayfront Station Exit B/Marina Bay Sands Bus Stop for a slightly longer 12-minute walk.

For those travelling by taxi or private car hire, ask your driver to drop you off at The Shoppes/Casino drop-off point, from where the museum is a 7-minute walk.

Best time to travel: June for the “White Nights” Best gateway city: Moscow and St. Petersburg, Russia Moscow and St. Petersburg Slide Show

Experience the art treasures of Moscow and St. Petersburg with guide, Amy Osaki. Begin in Moscow, continental Europe’s largest city, the seat of the government of Russia, and now home to over twenty billionaires! View iconic sites such as the Kremlin (which began as a fortress in the eleventh century), Red Square, and the sixteenth century St. Basil’s Cathedral. Then explore the art masterpieces at the Tretyakov Gallery, the National Museum of Russian Fine Art encompassing works from the eleventh to the twentieth century. Visit the Armory at the Kremlin filled with Imperial treasures including Faberge eggs once exchanged by the tsar and tsarina at Easter. Conclude your Moscow experience at the quiet seventeenth century Novodevichy Convent, one of many World Heritage sites included in the trip.

After a short flight, continue the trip with five days in St. Petersburg where you’ll be immersed in the opulence of Imperial Russia. Established by Tsar Peter I in 1703, St. Petersburg (known as Petrograd and Leningrad for most of the twentieth century) was the capital of the Russian empire for over two hundred years until the Russian Revolution of 1917. The Hermitage—said to be the largest art museum in the world with a collection of over three million objects housed in four main buildings—rivals the Louvre in Paris for both the quantity and quality of its treasures. Founded in 1764 by Catherine the Great, and open to the pubic for over two hundred years the museum is so vast that we’ll spread our visit out over several days and organize it by different themes. Also on the schedule is a visit to the Peter and Paul Fortress—the original citadel above the river founded in 1703—as well as some of the Imperial palaces in and around St. Petersburg such as Peterhof, a World Heritage Site. Peter I hired French architects to work on his many palaces, including Jean Baptiste Le Blond who worked with Andre Le Notre at Versailles. Consider enhancing your Russian experience by purchasing tickets to a performance—perhaps a ballet at St. Petersburg’s Mariinsky Theatre (also known as the Kirov).

Day 1 Overnight in Moscow Arrive in Moscow and transfer to your centrally-located hotel, your base for the next two nights. Enjoy an afternoon and early evening walk through Red Square (Krasnaya Ploshchad) past St. Basil’s Cathedral, and GUM department store all of which are back-dropped by the walls of the Kremlin fortress. Remember that we are here during the fabled “White Nights” when the summer days linger with light-filled evenings.

Day 2 Overnight in Moscow Within the walls of the Kremlin fortress, visit the Armoury Museum, one of Moscow’s oldest museums established at the start of the nineteenth century. The Kremlin Armoury was the royal arsenal; it produced and stored the weapons, jewelry and other regalia of the tsars. The museum’s collection encompasses four thousand items of applied art from Russia and elsewhere dating from the early fourth century to the twentieth century. Later in the day, visit the collection of masterpieces of the renowned Tretyakov Gallery. The Tretyakov collections were begun by the philanthropist Tretyakov brothers in the early nineteenth century. The gallery is recognized by many as a key repository of Russian art spanning the nation’s artistic tradition from early Orthodox icons to art nouveau, impressionist, and avant-garde works.

Day 3 Overnight in St Petersburg Enjoy a morning visit to the sixteenth century Novodevichy Convent named a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 2004. The convent’s name is sometimes translated as “New Maidens’ Monastery” to differentiate is from the convent within the walls of the Moscow Kremlin. Surrounded by white crenellated walls, this complex of churches has remained essentially intact since the seventeenth century. Here you’ll find the five-domed Cathedral of Our Lady of Smolensk with its spectacular iconostasis and the tall, red and white Gate Church of the Transfiguration which is often cited as a fine example of “Moscow Baroque” architecture. The neighboring Novodevichy Cemetery is the final resting place of the likes of Anton Chekhov, Sergei Prokofiev, Dmitri Shostakovich, and Boris Yeltsin. This afternoon fly to St. Petersburg, Russia’s second largest city situated on the banks of the Neva River where it empties into the Gulf of Finland.

Day 4 Overnight in St Petersburg Start of your exploration of St. Petersburg with a visit to the Peter and Paul Fortress, the original citadel of St. Petersburg. The fortress was built to the designs of the Swiss Italian architect Domenico Trezzini in the early eighteenth century. Trezzini’s Peter and Paul Cathedral dominates the fortress grounds and its iconic golden spire punctuates into the Baltic sky. Later visit the Yusupov Palace on the Moika, acclaimed as an “encyclopedia of St. Petersburg aristocratic interior design.” The palace was the home of the Yusupov family from 1830 and 1917 and was the place where Grigori Rasputin, a spiritual mentor to Tsar Nicholas II and the Royal Family in the early 20th century, was assassinated. A visit to the Church of the Savior on Spilled Blood built between 1883 and 1907 rounds out the day. The church was built in “Russian Revivalist” architectural style by Tsar Alexander III in commemoration of his father, Alexander II. The church occupies a conspicuous location on St. Petersburg’s Griboedov Canal and contains 7,500 square meters of mosaics; the interior walls and ceilings are completely covered by mosaics.

Day 5 Overnight in St Petersburg Seeing St. Petersburg’s Hermitage Museum in a day would be like trying to see the Smithsonian in a day! Rather than a forced march through the galleries at a rapid pace, we will slow down and savor the masterpieces. Remember, there are nearly seven miles worth of exhibitions! Today we focus on “Imperial Russia,” touring the rooms decorated for members of the Russian Imperial Family and viewing the art they commissioned and collected. This is the art that influenced the style of the grand palaces of the era. View the Grand Suite of rooms, Peter I’s collection of gold, and the jewelers art owned by the Russian Imperial Family (including Fabergé eggs, gold and diamonds). Here, too, are the rooms of Catherine II and her son Paul I with their fifteenth to eighteenth century French paintings and sculpture (Poussin, Watteau, Fragonard, Chardin, and Houdon).

Day 6 Overnight in St Petersburg Return for a second dose of the Hermitage! Today is dedicated to the famous European masterpieces exhibited at the Hermitage. Feast your eyes on memorable works by Leonardo da Vinci, Raphael, Michelangelo, Tintoretto, Tiepolo, Velazquez, and El Greco. At the Hermitage, you can revel in Rembrandt; there are twenty of his works in the museum’s collection. After lunch, enjoy the eighteenth to twentieth century masterpieces of Monet, van Gogh, Gauguin, Rodin, Picasso, Matisse and Kandinsky. Digest the art and reflect on this unique collection of human creations. Consider an evening performance, possibly at the Mariinsky Theatre.

Day 7 Overnight in St Petersburg Journey by hydrofoil across the Gulf of Finland to experience Peter I’s palace at Peterhof, a series of palaces and gardens that evoke comparisons with Versailles which Peter visited in 1715. Begun in 1714 with the construction of the Monplaisir palace and expanded by later Imperial generations who added Rococo and Neo-classical elements, Peterhof is now a World Heritage Site. The creative mastery of architects, engineers, artists and craftsmen from throughout Europe is on display here and all is choreographed to celebrate water in homage to Peter, the maritime emperor.

Day 8 Overnight in St Petersburg Go behind the scenes with an excursion to the Hermitage Museum’s Staraya Derevnya Restoration and Storage Center on the right back of the Neva River north of Kamenny Island. This vast treasure house is only accessible by private tour. Later, travel to Vasilvesky Island across the river from the Hermitage to visit Menishkov Palace completed in 1721 and now the oldest stone building in St. Petersburg. Enjoy a farewell dinner this evening.

About your guide : Amy Osaki holds a master’s degree from the Winterthur Museum. She studied art at the Louvre Museum in Paris and worked as a museum curator for over a decade including six years at the Portland Art Museum. She is an award-winning art educator who has led art trips around the world for the last fifteen years with Walking Softly Adventures. Many of these trips were offered for graduate credit from Portland State University where she is an Adjunct Professor.

An experimental art and science space inside one of the oldest Russian museums

The Polytechnic Museum was founded in the Russian Empire in 1872, making it one of the oldest science and technology museums of the world. The Museum has always inspired and supported young professionals; since the very beginning one of its missions has been drawing the audience's interest to knowledge and achievements of the human mind. Today the Polytechnic Museum, widely known as PolyTech, is renovating not only its historical main building, but also its approach to achieving the main goal: going beyond collection, lectures and exhibitions. The new PolyTech is a platform for scientific discussions, educational projects, intellectual efforts and media communication in every available form. Museeum met with Natalia Fuchs, interdisciplinary projects curator at the Polytechnic Museum, to find out more about an exciting new project – the “Electronic Livingroom” – cross-disciplinary platform, offering programs for everyone interested in technology and art.

How did the idea of the Electronic Livingroom come around?

"Polytechnic Museum has begun the modernization project a few years back: our historical building has been under reconstruction for sometime now (it will only be reopened in 2017-2018), so in order to engage our audience, we started working with various venues and institutions – VDNKh (that’s where the Electronic Livingroom is located) Strelka Institute, ZIL Center, Garage Museum of Contemporary Art, Multimedia Art Museum and others. For years the museum has been building a community for kids, teenagers and adults interested in science. Today we organize exhibitions, lectures, discussions, screenings and festivals throughout Moscow for every age group. Our newest project – Electronic Livingroom is meant to be a scene for media and sound artists, musicians, performers, curators and technological community. Every professional in audiovisual arts and audiovisual technology is part of our demographic. One of our aims is to promote technology and science to everyone interested in media art".

Today museums try to create events for a bigger audience. Why did you decide to develop a program for such a narrow group? It looks like an intimate space for a few people.

"And it is! Actually big ideas require intimate space at first. We are truly happy when our livingroom is full of guests on the day we present a new AV performance that involves new technologies or a specific area of scientific research; when we discover young media artists or when we organize lectures and public talks for a very specific target audience (innovative research, technology or science professionals). We establish direct contact with opinion makers, “it-girls” and “it-boys” of science. Electronic Livingroom was launched as a creative laboratory or curatorial studio, it was not meant to be a public social club, but throughout the first year, public interest grew so fast that now several laboratories exist in the Electronic Livingroom framework: Laboratory of Interactive Performance (run together with media artist Alexey Yepishev and choreographer Yulia Chekmas), Audiovision Lab (with co-curator Alexey Shcherbina), and McLuhan Club (with media researcher from Higher School of Economics Varvara Tchumakova). It is now a platform to collaborate with established and young artists, with international organizations, a place to produce projects for international festivals and exhibitions. But still it feels cozy. “Intimacy” in this case works really well. The livingroom has grown, but the audience is supportive and understanding, we continuously work to secure that. Luckily artists and technologists have a chance to work together, combining contemporary audiovisual art with modern technology in a very comfortable setting of the Electronic Livingroom at the Polytechnic Museum".

"We want to safeguard a place where creative minds can develop and test their bold ideas, a sort of supportive audience for media artists", - Natalia Fuchs.

Would you say that the Electronic Livingroom is mostly for art, science and music professionals with profound knowledge on the subject? Is your program adapted for an average art lover?

"We always think of people who come in for the first time and want to have an idea of what audiovisual art, sound, electronic and experimental music are in relation to technology and science; what multimedia and visualization is to modern society; how minds, ecology and the world are being influenced. We don’t want the Livingroom to be hostile to new audiences. Public talks and lectures give a better understanding of the subject to wider audience. We organize audiovisual performances and concerts where people can enjoy music and visuals, ask questions, meet artists and other guests, find more information on our projects. It is a good way-in for art lovers: friendly atmosphere and easy-going discussions; also it is a space, where the open minded technology specialists can contribute to contemporary art with technology and science. We are always there to help people communicate and we are happy when our public events lead to new collaborations".

What were the most interesting events you organized in the Electronic Livingroom so far?

"Now it's the right time to think of our past season, but it's difficult to point out the most significant events. We cover a wide spectrum of genres and areas trying to think of unusual forms of representation and performative aspects of modern culture. We hosted two lecture series: Nick Zavriev's lectures on electronic music (where we learned not only the history, but also key compositions in this genre) and Andrey Orlov’s lectures on technology of electronic music. Andrey showed his legendary collection – old school synthesizers, drum machines and so on and dwelled on the creative processes. During the AV live series we showed audiovisual performances by many local experimental artists (::vtol::, Alexei Borisov, Solo Operator, Pavel Zhagun, Alexander Senko and others), labels (Kotä Records, Art-Tek) and international guests (Nicolas Melmann, Peter Kirn, Mico Rex, Thorsten Storno, Arma, Paul Roth, Ian Douglas-Moore). Sometimes our Electronic Livingroom was turned into a gallery. Last August we hosted “Cage suite” audiovisual installation (Videoformes festival, France)".

Are you planning to recreate any key sound art performances?

"Next year we will launch lecture series researching what sound performances are all about. Maybe recreation of performances will come up as an outcome of this lecture series, let’s see! For now the Electronic Livingroom hosted Polytech.Science.Art workshop dedicated to Synesthesia and the reconstruction of historical Soviet light-and-sound machine Crystall. The reconstruction has not yet come to an end, we work on it together with Russian artist ::vtol:: and construction bureau Prometheus, where this machine originally came out in the 1960s".

Do you think the Electronic Livingroom will turn into a new type of an intellectual club?

"It is already an intellectual club! There are ongoing sessions on audiovisual context and electronic arts, on many pivotal subjects. Our main concern now is moving back to our historical building in the heart of Moscow. I believe it will be the powerful place bringing people together. So the potential is right there. It is “in the blood” of the Polytechnic Museum, since it has always been an important place for intellectuals in Moscow and we aim to develop our projects to bring in anyone open-minded and everyone thinking outside the box".

Tour Itinerary

With the 1000-year history, Russia has had a rich portfolio of conflicts, battles, wars. On this Soviet tour, we'll talk about various wars that happened in Russia, focusing on WWII.

Mother Russia has undergone a lot in its long life. Since ancient times, Russian rulers have taken nearly all political power into their own hands. By the beginning of the 20th century, the Russian oppositional movement was deadly set for the total destruction of the ever-lasting tsarist regime. All of Russia got involved in the bloody revolution of 1917 in an effort to abolish the current state of the government and gain freedom for the ordinary people.

You will learn about the every-day life of the Soviet people during the bloody Second World War with the Nazis, including the legendary Battle for Moscow, the 900-day siege of Leningrad, the hardships that local citizens went through, the consequences of the war and the scars it left on the Soviet people, as well as why the Cold War happened and what was the fundamental reason.

Our mission on the Soviet Russia tour is to find out

• - How much this 1917 revolution cost the people;
• - Whether they actually got the freedom they wanted and was it worth it;
• - What happened over the next 74 years;
• - Who were the main political communist leaders of the Soviet Union;
• - Were Russians happy and satisfied with the Soviet Union?

Our tour itinerary will lie in most Soviet areas of Moscow, which are quite spread throughout the city, as very few of them are left. You can choose how much you are ready to live this Soviet life on a 5, 7 or 10-hour tour. Depending on the duration of the tour, you will see part or all of the places below:

If you want to extend the tour, you are welcome to do so by paying $20/extra hour in cash on the tour.

Time stands still in Red Square. The Red Square is the heart of Moscow (and whole Russia). Saint Basil's Cathedral will make your mouth drop. If it is from May-October, have a cocktail on the outside terrace and simply people watch! The massive square offers so much to enjoy.

The burial place of one of the most influential communist leaders in the world.

Revolution Square Metro Station

Rub the Soviet dog's nose for good luck and admire the 76 bronze sculptures, devoted to the passionate, strong-willed and patriotic Soviet people.

With its giant arch, amazing fountain, and huge pavilions of different Soviet Republics.

Victory Park Metro Station

The deepest undeground station in Moscow and one of the deepest in the world.

Victory Park

For an open-air museum as big as 135 ha (1 350 000 square meters), Victory park sure doens't lack diversity. The park is dedicated to the Russian victory in WWII, and was laid out in 1995 in commemoration of 50-year anniversary of victory.

Stalin had planned for its construction already in 1941, being sure of victory from the very start of the war.

Greeting Hill

The highest points in Moscow (172 meters), where Napoleon waited for keys of Moscow in vain.

Triumphal Arch

Stunning monument consisting of 12 cast-iron columns, each 12 meters high, and weighing 16 tons. Built to mark Russia's victory over Napoleon in 1812.

Museum of the Great Patriotic War

In the city that is as much about wars as it is about victories, there is one essential stopover - the Museum of the Great Patriotic War (that's what WWII is called in Russia). Must-do for those wishing to understand Russia's past and look at the whole war from the different perspective - Russian.

The museum is not for the faint-hearted. Here you can see films about the partisan experience, the scenes that will haunt you forever (no subtitles, but they are not necessary).

We'll have a glance at Russian life of the XX century in the  Museum of Contemporary History , which houses bits of everything from Russian history of XXth century: from English club to a storage of Stalin's presents.

The 1987 musical with music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim and book by James Lapine intertwines the plots of several Brothers Grimm fairy tales, exploring the consequences of the characters' wishes and quests. The main characters are taken from "Little Red Riding Hood," "Jack and the Beanstalk," "Rapunzel," and "Cinderella" as well as several others. 

The musical is tied together by a story involving a childless baker and his wife and their quest to begin a family, their interaction with the witch who has placed a curse on them, and their interaction with other storybook characters during their journey. Recommended for ages 10 & up.

The California Studio Lecture: Tania Candiani

Tania Candiani is an interdisciplinary visual artist whose work explores the intersection of art, literature, music, architecture, science and labor. Her production methods emphasize ancestral knowledge and its techniques and technologies. In 2015, Candiani represented Mexico at the 56th Venice Biennale. Her work has been exhibited internationally in museums, institutions and independent spaces. Candiani has received the Guggenheim Fellowship in the Arts and the Smithsonian Institution Research Grant for Artists, among others. She is a member of the National System of Art Creators of Mexico.

Sensory Odyssey: Into the Heart of Our Living World

The main entrance to ArtScience Museum will be closed on 27 May due to an event. ArtScience Museum will be operating as usual and members of the public can still access the museum via the second entrance near Miracle Coffee. SweetSpot at ArtScience Museum will also be closed on 27 May.

From the salt lakes of the savannah to the Arctic Circle, from the rainforest canopy to the depths of the earth and oceans, we become explorers as we embark on a larger-than-life journey through seven natural environments. Guided by our senses and curiosity, we will encounter a variety of plants, animals, bacteria, and mushroom species during this extraordinary expedition. See, hear, smell and feel nature like never before!

This one-of-a-kind exhibition presents strikingly real, high-definition video filmed in 8K resolution at different locations around the planet. Specially designed scents and sound effects take us up close and personal with the living world. Without words, the experience of rediscovering nature is all the more profound as it is based on amplifying our sensory powers of vision, hearing and smell to explore the life all around us. With the interplay between scale and time, Sensory Odyssey is an embodied experience designed to unravel the beauty of our planet’s biodiversity. Teeming with colours, sounds and scents, the exhibition encourages us all to appreciate just how fragile our ecosystems are.

Let’s develop a deeper understanding of our living world and strive to be good stewards of the precious planet we call home.

Organised by ArtScience Museum and BASE Entertainment Asia, this exhibition was created by Sensory Odyssey Studio in collaboration with the French National Museum of Natural History in Paris. The 2023 Asian premiere of this exhibition at ArtScience Museum marks the first stop on a global tour.
