History and description

Aviva Stadium is the national stadium of Ireland and the playing venue of the Irish national team. It also hosts most of the nation’s major rugby matches.

Aviva Stadium was built on the place of the old Lansdowne Road Stadium, which was one of the oldest stadiums in the world when it got demolished in 2007. Construction of Aviva Stadium started right after and finished in early 2010. The stadium had a price tag of €410 million and was designed by Populous .

Aviva Stadium officially opened on 14 May 2010. First football was played on 4 August 2010 when a League of Ireland side hosted Manchester United for a friendly (1-7).

In 2011 the stadium was the playing venue of the Europa League final between FC Porto and SC Braga (1-0).

Aviva Stadium was part of the initial selection of playing venues for the Euro 2020 Championships, but was removed because it could not offer assurances that spectators would be admitted due to the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic.

The stadium’s most notable feature are its curvilinear shaped stands enclosing the complete stadium, a shape chosen to make sure that the surrounding houses get enough sunlight. The stadium holds a total of 10,000 premium seats as well as 1,300 seats in corporate boxes.

How to get to Aviva Stadium

Aviva Stadium is located in central Dublin in the Ballsbridge area, about 2 kilometres from the city centre. The walk from St Stephen’s Green park or the Trinity College area will take 20 to 30 minutes.

From Connolly Station or Pearse Station take a DART train southbound. Get off at station Lansdowne Road, which lies right next to the stadium.

From the Temple Bar area take bus 7 to Loughlinstown/Cherrywood.

Eat, drink, and sleep near Aviva Stadium

Aviva Stadium is located in a rather quiet residential area. There is relatively little around in terms of eating and drinking, though you will surely bump into the odd pub on your way to the stadium.

Ariel House and Butler’s Townhouse are two hotels that are only a few minutes walking from the stadium. Both get excellent reviews. Ballsbridge Hotel , Roxford Lodge Hotel , and Grand Canal Hotel are other well-rated options.

Aviva Stadium tours

Aviva Stadium offers guided stadium tours that include the dressing rooms, players tunnel, dugouts, and press areas.

Tours run seven days a week at 10:00 am, 11:00 am, 12:00 noon, 1:00 pm, 2:00 pm, 3:00 pm, and 4:00 pm. Tours do not run on the day of a match. Bookings are not required, but still recommended, and can be made by phone +353 (0) 1 238 2300 or email [email protected] .

The tour costs €5.00.

Great stadium. Looks amazing both outside and inside. Went to watch Euro 2016 qualifier between Ireland and Poland. Cracking atmosphere. We walked from city centre and I took us about 40 minutes. Quality food is sold in kiosks around the stadium. There was no alcohol sold on that day. Would go there again any day.

Three quarters of a wonderful stadium! It really does seem absurd not to finish it properly, though. It’s the National Stadium for heaven’s sake! The residents to the north could surely be relocated and suitably compensated to make way for this.

Went to an autumn rugby international a year or two ago, Ireland v Argentina. Only about 40,000 attendance, but a great atmosphere nonetheless. I wish that pint-sized end stand was made a little bigger, it takes away from the atmosphere. Great facility, though. Very clean and modern.

Not only is the large stadium ideal for echoing the booming sound of the crowd, but it is also a hotspot for concerts. Attend a performance by one of the world’s most popular entertainers in a stadium that has already hosted Madonna, Lady Gaga and Rihanna.

Aviva Stadium opened in 2010 on the site of the Lansdowne Road Stadium which was established in 1872. It has hosted a momentous European soccer final and many international soccer and rugby games. Guided tours are available several times daily year-round except game days.

The stadium is in Sandymount in the southeastern Dublin suburbs. Walk through the quaint village and visit its patisseries and cafés. Try the local favorite of fish and chips, with views of the Irish Sea.

From the Dublin city center, ride the DART train system for 15 minutes to reach Lansdowne Road Railway Station, which is located right at the stadium. You can also take a bus for the 1.5-mile (3-kilometer) journey. Adjust your schedule for heavy traffic on game days, when cars are not allowed near the stadium.

The tour first stop is the Media Centre. There is memorabilia on display, historical overview of Aviva Stadium (150 years of history) and film shown in the Press Conference Room showcasing the facilities for the journalists on match day. The second stop is the Irish Dressing Room. You will be entering through the Players' Entrance and enjoy exploring the facilities, including the recovery baths and warm up room. The third stop will be the dugouts. You will have the unique opportunity to experience exiting through the Players' Tunnel and while standing at the dugouts you will learn more about the stadium's history. The Aviva Stadium is a stunning and modern 51,700-capacity sports stadium located on Lansdowne Road in Dublin 4. The sports arena is Ireland’s first and only UEFA Elite stadium. The amphitheatre of today was built on the site of the former Lansdowne Road stadium’s oldest sports stadium in Europe. It has replaced it as the home to its former chief tenants, the Irish Rugby Union team and the Republic of Ireland football team.

The stadium currently hosts all Irish international Rugby Union and Football matches. It has also previously been the host stadium for the inaugural Nations Cup and the 2011 UEFA Europe League Final venue. On top of that, on 19 September 2014, UEFA announced that the Aviva Stadium would host four Euro 2020 finals fixtures.

In its short history, the Aviva Stadium has followed in the steps of its predecessor, Lansdowne Road, by being the venue for some of the biggest music acts in the world, including Rihanna, Michael Buble, The Script, Neil Diamond, Madonna and Lady Gaga.

• MCD does not sell tickets. Any & all ticketing queries should be directed to Ticketmaster via your My Account function. If you do not have an account, you should create one prior to submitting your request.
• MCD does not distribute 1) backstage passes 2) VIP passes or 3) wristbands to the general public. Requests for passes/wristbands will not be answered.
• MCD cannot arrange any individual Meet & Greets, or shout outs by artists at our events. Meet & Greets, where available, will be purchasable via Ticketmaster’s website. Individual requests will not be answered.
• Stage Times, where available, will only be provided via MCD social media or venue platforms. Where times are released, please note these are subject to change. Requests for stage times will not be answered.
• Accessible tickets, where available, are purchasable via Ticketmaster – any requests to relocate your seats owing to a change in circumstances must be made via your Ticketmaster My Account function. We cannot facilitate ticket exchanges directly.
• If you have any other accessibility queries with regard to toilet facilities, dietary requirements etc., please send an email to [email protected] This email address is exclusively for the use of wheelchair and other accessible bookers – please do not send general queries about access to tickets or presales to this inbox, as these will not be answered. Felt a bit let down by it the tour guide was nice but he made me feel like he didnt really want to be there he kept rushing us along and didnt give much time in each room . He was 80% focused on rugby and not overly bothered by soccer questions when asked it was great to see the history of both sports and hear about them but I would like to do it again and spend more time taking it in instead of been hurried about !! Didnt get the lady's name behind the counter but she was super friendly and convivial. Our guide David O'Brien was first class! We saw the players entrance, the home dressing rooms (actually a number of rooms), walked into the sradium viav the players tunnel, visited the top tier ofvthe stadium, saw a great little video about the old and new stadium and heard a number of anecdotes - ask your guide to tell you tfe storey about the 40 bottles of fake tan!!!! Turned up and indeed we had the man himself! Brought us into the media centre, home changing room and pitch side, while giving a quick history of the location.
