Because Barbados is a relatively small island - 21 miles (34 km) long and no more than 14 miles (23 km) wide - all attractions are close to the port, allowing the cruise traveler to enjoy a leisurely day at a laid back pace.

Cruise travelers will find lots of things to do in Barbados: be it perusing impeccably preserved landmarks (like the Parliament Building and Museum, a couple of churches, or the Synagogue and its Museum).

If you like contemplating unique sceneries don't miss the Bathsheba Bay or the Gun Hill Signal Station . For those that enjoy active pursuits, or just basking in the sun there are many and delightful beaches in Barbados, relatively close to the cruise port.

After all, Barbados rich history and cultural past are preserved in an exotic but harmonious mix of quaint tropical ambiance, lush landscapes, beautiful landmarks, and stunning beaches. It should be underlined that Historic Bridgetown and its Garrison is a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2011.

The Cruise Port aka Deep Water Harbor is located on the South-Western side of the Island and, although not exactly right by the center of Bridgetown, it is within walking distance - 1 mile (or 1.700 meters) - to the main streets of the city.

Most luxury cruise lines (like Regent or Crystal) offer complimentary shuttle buses . If your cruise line doesn't offer a shuttle bus, there is also a paid bus - US $2.00 per person, each way - right outside the terminal. Taxis are also available but it doesn't make much sense to pay extra unless you really need to.

The cruise terminal is one of the best in the Caribbean with all services and amenities the cruise traveler may require. On a large building, you will find an excellent Visitor Information Center , an area with Free mobile-friendly Wi-Fi , restrooms, souvenir and duty-free shops (both jewelry and liquor) and, last but not least, a post office where you can buy Barbadian Postal Stamps known for their exquisite designs.

Outside the Terminal, there is a dedicated shaded area for tour buses (on the left side), a few more souvenir and clothing shops (t-shirts, beach attire), and local transportation services such as Car Rental, Scooters, and ATV - be aware that driving in Barbados is on the left as expected on a former British Colony.

Within walking distance

For those that enjoy walking, the path from the exit of the Cruise Terminal along the ocean up to the historical downtown and the Careenage (an interesting area of Bridgetown) is both safe and pleasurable . Have in mind that it will be hot and you should wear cool clothing, walking shoes, a hat, and sunscreen is never frivolous.

Photo of Walking Path to Bridgetown Barbados

Walking Path to Bridgetown

The wide avenue outside the exit gates of the cruise port is the Princess Alice Highway. On the right side, by the ocean, the path is lined with trees and along the way, there are a few places with benches and tables to have a rest. On the left side there are a few places worth a look: the Rolli's Bar and Grill, the Caribbean Cigar Company selling the Royal Barbados brand and the Pelican Village Craft Center .

The Highlights of Bridgetown

Once you pass the Bridgetown Fish Market (on the right) you would have walked already 1/2 mile (800 meters). Around 300 feet (100 meters) more and you will have the alternative to keep walking straight into Hincks Street or turn left into Cumberland Street . The latter will take you to Jubilee Gardens and St. Mary's Church (a major Anglican church in Bridgetown) which is a stone's throw away from the shopping area of downtown (Broad Street and around).

Photo of Interior St. Mary's Church in Bridgetown Barbados

The walk into Hinks Street leads to Wharf Road, a Boardwalk and the Careenage. Along the way, at the Cloister Building, on the left, the Agapey Chocolate Factory is a place to visit if you have a sweet tooth and even consider a tour (1 hour for US$20).

After a right followed by a left turn, you will find yourself on Wharf Road with its boardwalk and it becomes clear that you are in historical surroundings. This is the place where, once upon a time, ships were careened onto a side to be repaired, scrubbed and painted, hence the Careenage eponymous. Now, on the narrow mouth of the Constitution River , sleek yachts, touristic and fishing expeditions boats dock on both banks. Farther along, the Wharf Road borders the National Heroes Square with a statue of Lord Nelson and the imposing Parliament Building which are impossible to miss.

The pedestrian Chamberlain Bridge crosses the river to the south bank. At the end of the bridge, the Independence Arch is a famous landmark and a great photo op. Immediately after, on the left, is the seafront greenery of Interior St. Mary's Church and on the right is where you could have a refreshing drink or a light lunch before the Covid pandemic. Unfortunately, popular places like the Marina Bar and the Waterfront Café have closed down.

For those interested in all things historical, you should return to the National Heroes Square to visit the Parliament Building, St. Michaels Cathedral (built in 1784) and the Nidhe Israel Museum and Synagogue (an absolute must-see regardless of your faith or absence of).

If shopping is on your plans, turn left on Heroes Square into Board Street as this is where the best duty-free shops and departments stores are found.

Among the typical stores found all over the caribbean, here are some othe best shops you will find in Barbados Cruise port:

  • Colombian Emeralds
  • Diamonds International
  • Litlle Switzerland
  • The Royal Shop
  • David Yurman

It took a few calls at Bridgetown Cruise Port for the Editor to realized that the Careenage is very close to the famous Boatyard Beach Bar and Club - less than 1/4 of a mile (400 meters) south of the Independence Arch. In fact, the Carlisle Bay's northern tip is the mouth of the Constitutional River , and on the bay, the Boatyard is just one of the many clubs and bars that line the sugar white sands and turquoise waters of Barbados spectacular beaches of this Bay and where the best snorkeling sites in Barbados are located. However, be aware that Carlisle Bay is close to two miles long.

Editors' Tip: if the Boatyard or any of the beach clubs on Carlisle Bay are on your to do list, it is advisable to get there (or back) by taxi as the walk from the cruise port is over 2 miles (3 km).

Cheap car rentals in Barbados

Top tips for renting a car in barbados.

  • As long as you hold a valid driver’s license from your country of origin or an International Driver’s Permit, you can obtain a mandatory visitor’s permit to drive and rent a car in Barbados. Fees range from 10 BBD (5 USD) for a two-month permit to 100 BBD (50 USD) for a one-year permit. These permits are available at all rental agencies throughout the island. Also, make sure you have a credit card, because there are some agencies (Courtesy Rent-A-Car) that do not accept cash.
  • Parking your rental car in Barbados is fairly easy because the laws are very relaxed in this regard. Generally speaking, free parking areas within town limits are designated by the letter P or wherever you find parking meters. Outside of municipal limits you are free to park on most roads, but always take care to use well-lit areas wherever possible.
  • Should you decide to rent a car in Barbados, you should know that rush-hour traffic on the island heading towards Bridgetown (the capital) between the hours of 7:00 am and 8:30 am and out of Bridgetown between 4:30 pm and 5:30 pm can cause excessively long lines and frequent jams. You should keep this in mind if you intend to be on the road or if you have appointments that you need to keep.
  • Apart from the national ABC Highway, most roads in Barbados consist of one lane in either direction, and many streets in the countryside are not well lit, so use extreme caution when driving at night. Despite its size, it is not uncommon to find yourself lost when driving on the island. This is especially true for first-time visitors, so renting a GPS system is a good investment.
  • 25% of our users found rental cars in Barbados for $50 or less
  • Book your rental car in Barbados at least 1 day before your trip in order to get a below-average price
  • Off-airport rental car locations in Barbados are around 21% cheaper than airport locations on average

Welcome to the Bridgetown – Barbados cruise port guide. Barbados is known for its natural beauty and attractions. It is the only island in the Lesser Antilles that is non-volcanic. Your cruise ship will dock on the west side. This is were we find the beautiful white beaches in contrast with the rocky east side. Bridgetown is the capital with approximately 110.000 inhabitants. The busy streets are packed with great shops. For some lovely bounty time we would however advise you to get out of town and visit one of the many beaches, coves, hills or golf courses! Learn how to get further afield in the Barbados cruise port guide .

  • The official currency in Barbados is the Barbados dollar (BBD) and the exchange rate is approximately 1 USD to 2 BBD. US currency is widely accepted across the island, and most stores and restaurants accept major credit cards too.
  • The port area and the city center are flat and suitable for people with walking difficulties/wheelchair users.
  • Bridgetown city center is located within a 10-15 minute walk from the port. There is a waterfront boardwalk that stretches between Port Barbados’ Main Gate and the historic city center along Princess Alice Highway. The walk is pleasant and scenic. For those who prefer not to walk, there is a convenient shuttle service from the terminal building to downtown.
  • The Barbados Transportation Board operates public buses across the island and you can check bus schedules at www.transportboard.com . Even though this is the cheapest way to get around, this may not be the most convenient due to the ship’s limited time in port.
  • Taxis are probably the best way to explore the island, however, they are not metered. I strongly suggest you visit the tourist information office and get guidance about official fares before hiring the taxi, so you know what to expect and always agree on the price in advance with the driver. Any other tips are welcome as well!

First the roads are narrow, second signage is suspect meaning once off the main roads they're small and multiple. There will be a number of signs saying ex. Bathsheba via and along the way will be other via's so the trip can be confusing.

Maps, they're not bad for the main roads but not detailed enough for other roads. There is an excellent map book by Skyview but you'd have to get to a store to buy one etc.

Though you can rent a car you're still limited in time so when you get disoriented (lost) which is quite enjoyable as you'll see a bit more of Barbados countryside than expected you might not get to see what you want.

What I suggest is easy, fun and not much more expensive than renting a car for a day etc. Hire a taxi at the Port, they're very knowledgeable about the island, they can give you insights that obviously driving yourself you won't have. They can take you to the points you want plus others they will recommend, take you to a local restaurant or wherever you want and you'll quite enjoy your day.

However if you want to rent a car here are some companies to contact. They'll meet you at the Port, they'll give you the Barbados drivers permit ($10.00 Bds) and off you go.

MAH Car Rentals http://www.funbarbados.com/CarRentals/MAHrentals.cfm

Call or e mail and get quotes before settling on a car company. We always do it but have found MAH to suit us just fine.

Forgot about the how to get somewhere time etc.

Time to get somewhere is not a matter of distance but rather winding roads and traffic or as I said above signage, getting lost which is part of driving in Barbados.

thank you for the info! I appreciate it!

If we were to hire a taxi, do you have any idea of roughly how much it would cost? & is that something I can do right at the port without making advance reservations or anything? Is this something normal that others have done?

' class=

I would agree renting a car probably not the best option for just the day - the local taxi's (in port) are very enjoyable way to get to see what you want but:

-Negotiate the exact price first

-Don't be surprised if the driver takes you on a detour to see his brother's/friend's/uncle's bar or shop!

Alternatively if you plan to travel up the west coast somewhere there are the 'local taxis' which run up and down which are the locals way of travelling around and are basically pimped up transits or mini buses that just stop where ever you want! Be prepared to sit next to a farmer delivering chickens though! Still great fun and you'll really get the spirit of the island that way!

Enjoy your day - we are there for the day too on 19 November off a Princess cruise !

We've returned three times because we like the island so much. But the one thing we don't like is the driving. We're from the U.S and had driven on the left before, but the roads in Barbados are so narrow that it can be harrowing to navigate the winding roads, especially during busy times...or if you're lost!!

On one drive we ran into a ditch and destroyed a tire rim on our rental car .

We're headed back in December, so we'll have to look for the Skyview map book that Canby suggested

if you are on rccl in the so carib barbados will be a fab beach day-probably the best beaches of the trip. i wou;d get a taxi for a couple of hours nice and early and then have him drop you at a nice beach on the gold coast. the water is not to be missed and you can swim with the turtles. have a great trip!

You can check out the website at http://www.atlasbarbados.com

Are there any tours that include bottom bay in them?

I've been looking into doing a private tour with glory tours. This way we can see all the places on "my list" & then also get to swim with the turtles at the end!
