The seats were comfy. Our driver wasn't the most courteous though. He didn't check the bathroom before leaving and there was no tissue in there during the ride.

the bus stop was out of the way and not clearly marked; i had to call to get the precise address. all the lights were off on the bus. the wifi was password locked and we didn't get the password given to us. it reeked.

Bus was cancelled- I had to call to find this out. Still awaiting reimbursement.

Families have been making the journey from New York City to Newport since the early 19th century when the city's wealthiest-cc: the Astors, the Vanderbilts, the Belmonts - established their summertime homes along the area's rocky coastline. Really, who could blame them? Think: Unparalleled fresh seafood, charming seaside resorts , beaches , unique shopping, plenty of things to do for kids , and arguably most important of all, staff that's well-versed in meeting the needs of little ones.

Just over a 3-hour drive from the city awaits a family vacation that feels worlds away.

Welcome to your waterfront home away from home at  Newport Harbor Island Resort , where the essential resort experience awaits! Surrounded by water with views of both Newport Harbor and Narragansett Bay, this family-approved property offers two indoor/outdoor saltwater pools for hours of entertainment, a private sundeck, cabanas for rent, a historic  lighthouse , and a clan of goats (the property is located on Goat Island, after all).

SAILING STARTS HERE:

Welcome to Sailing's new home. The Sailing Museum opened its doors this Spring to the anticipation of sailors and non-sailors alike. The museum’s 8,500 square feet of exhibits will chronicle the history of sailing as a sport, along with galleries that honor the America’s Cup Hall of Fame, one of the most prestigious sailing races in the world, and the National Sailing Hall of Fame. Find more information about the museum and interactive exhibits here .

The Sailing Museum

CASUAL COASTAL LUNCH:

This humble lobster shack overlooking Newport Harbor is one of the city's best hidden gems. Built by a group of life-long local fishermen as a type of co-op to sell their fresh catch directly to the public,  Newport Lobster Shack  is stocked with wild-caught crab and lobster straight from local waters. The menu offers up coastal classics like lobster bisque, clam chowder, and lobster rolls, alongside treats for kids like lobster bites, hot dogs and lobster strips.

Wish you could take the fresh flavors of Newport home with you? You can. Newport Lobster Shack ships live seafood anywhere in the continental US.

TRAVELER'S CHOICE:

Experience interactive exhibits, test your knowledge of the sport on a five-foot touch table game where your kids can "serve" trivia questions back and forth, and get up close to tennis legend Roger Federer's hologram.

2 Hands-On Sea Experience:

Inside the Easton's Beach ballroom rotunda you'll find Save the Bay's Exploration Center and Aquarium . Home to more than 40 species from Narragansett Bay and Rhode Island, the center houses three touch tanks and dozens of exhibits for a hands-on experience with some of the area's most fascinating sea creatures.

IMPORTANT NOTE:

SCENIC STROLL:

Afterwards, make the quick walk up Memorial Boulevard to the entrance of Newport's 3.5 mile Cliff Walk . One of Newport's most popular sights, this is where the serenity of salt air and crashing waves meets the marvel of Gilded Age architecture. Stroll at your own pace, stopping along the way to marvel at scenic overlooks and some of Newport's most opulent, historic homes.

FAMILY TOUR:

Exit Cliff Walk at Ruggles Avenue and take a right at the end of the block to find yourself at The Breakers , the largest of the Newport Mansions . Head inside for a family tour that brings the house, its furnishings and sculptures to life. Your kids will love hearing from whimsical creatures like the friendly dolphin under the grand staircase, the lions of the Music Room and the dragons in the Dining Room. They'll experience a summer day in the life of one of the Vanderbilt children, learn about the masters of the kitchen—Monsieur Le Chef and his colleague, The Butler.

While your kids enjoy the family audio tour, grab yourself a head set to hear The Breakers Revealed, an audio tour that follows the same route and timing.

You will definitely pay for the convenience of a quick, direct flight. Expect to pay at least $140 for a one-way ticket. This was the lowest price I found at the time of writing this post, so please check when you’re ready to fly.

Also remember, booking in advance will get you the best prices. Flight costs are changing constantly, but the general range is between $140-$180 for one-way. If you see something cheaper than that, grab it!

Rhode Island to New York by Train

Amtrak operates train services from Providence, Rhode Island, to New York City’s Penn Station. Providence Train Station is located at 100 Gaspee Street, and is behind the Rhode Island State House. If you ask to be brought to the train station, there is only one, with an easy drop off right in front of the main entrance.

Taking the train is easy when traveling from Rhode Island to New York

The Amtrak Northeast Regional and Acela Express are the two main train services available. The Acela Express is a high-speed train, while the Northeast Regional is a more affordable option. It’s more affordable because it makes more stops and takes a bit longer than the Acela, but not too much longer.

The journey takes approximately 3-4 hours, depending on the train and any stops along the way. Acela averages 3 hours and 5 minutes and the Northeast Regional averages 3 and a half hours. Trains offer comfortable seating, onboard amenities, and free Wi-Fi.

Costs for the Train

Depending on which class ticket you book, the prices can fluctuate widely. The best I could locate were $99-$119 for coach, $106-$230 for business class, and $291-$352 for first class. In some instances, it might be cheaper to fly!

Why is the Train from Rhode Island to New York So Expensive?

According to the Amtrak site, the prices charged for this route are some of the highest in the country. Amtrak is the national passenger train carrier for the entire United States. Many of the lines are not very profitable. The Northeast Corridor, the train lines running between Boston to Washington, DC, is one of the busiest in the country. They charge more in this area because the travelers, mostly business people, will pay the prices.

Given that these prices change constantly, make sure to search online for the best deals. If you know when you’re traveling, you can book your tickets ahead of time for the best prices.

Rhode Island to New York by Bus

Several bus companies provide transportation from Rhode Island to New York City, including Greyhound , FlixBus , and Peter Pan Bus Lines . Buses depart from different cities in Rhode Island, such as Providence, Warwick, or Pawtucket, and arrive at various bus terminals in New York City. The biggest and best-known is the Port Authority Bus Terminal. The available times range from morning to early evening. Check the sites to make sure you can get there when you need to based on the availability of buses.

Taking the bus is one of the most cost efficient ways to travel from RI to NYC.

Before traveling, carefully check where you are leaving from in Rhode Island and where you want to go in New York City. Verify if the bus you are choosing will end up where you want to be. Don’t add to the cost of your bus trip with a taxi or ride-share costs.

Bus Travel Time

Travel times can vary depending on traffic conditions, but it generally takes around 3-4 hours with good traffic. Having said this, I have also been stuck on a bus that took over 5 hours to get me to the city due to an accident on Route 95. The buses, as well as cars, are at the mercy of road construction, accidents on the highway, or slower traffic due to bad weather.

Costs for the Bus

Keeping these possibilities in mind, buses do offer affordable fares and amenities like Wi-Fi and power outlets. The cost range is $25 to $50.  With the same time as the train, that price isn’t looking too bad if you want to save money. I recommend you try FlixBus by clicking here , since they have the best prices and get you to the same place as the other bus lines.

Rhode Island to New York By Car

For some people, it’s all about the freedom of driving yourself and being in control. Or at least as in control as you can be dealing with the other drivers along the way. This way you can bring snacks and drinks with you for the drive.

Renting a car is an excellent way to get from RI to NYC

How to Get from Rhode Island to New York

Driving from Rhode Island to New York City is the option for you. The most direct route is to take Interstate 95 (I-95) southbound, which will lead you directly into New York City. The driving distance and time will depend on your starting location in Rhode Island, as well as the traffic conditions. From Providence, the drive usually takes around 3-4 hours, but it can be longer during peak travel times. Be aware that traffic congestion and parking can be challenging in New York City, so it’s important to plan accordingly.

Renting a Car to Go from RI to NYC

If you’d rather rent a car, or don’t have a vehicle you want to take to New York City, then renting a car is your best bet. Check out prices here for car rentals available for the date of your adventure.

Remember that traveling by car exposes you to the same potential slowdowns as the bus. You can be delayed due to traffic, accidents, construction, or weather. There is also the potential for car troubles or flat tires.

Knowing what might happen, carefully weigh all of your options before making your decision. The important thing is to just get there.

Why Make Your Rhode Island to New York Trip a Day Trip?

Let’s face it. We all know how expensive New York City can be. As a tourist, or visitor, you might not know where all the best places are to eat or stay. This lack of knowledge can cost you dearly.

The city of New York and the yellow cabs. Travel from RI to NYC to spend a day here.

If money is a major concern, then cut costs by taking a day trip. NYC is not that far from RI and it can be done as a day trip. With the proper planning and good schedule, you can easily do it in one day. Leave as early as possible and return late in the evening. This gives you from mid-morning to evening to enjoy the city, then drive home after rush hour traffic has passed.

The other added bonus is not having to pay for an overnight stay. Spending the night in downtown is extremely costly if you’re on a budget. If you find a fairly priced place, it is probably quite a distance from the city center. The day trip may be the way to go for you.

But if you do want to stay overnight, then read on for some accommodation suggestions.

Review: The Big Bus Tour in New York City

I absolutely loved the Big Bus Tour in New York City. It’s the best way to go sightseeing in an open-top, hop-on hop-off, top-rated tour and explore the best New York attractions !

If this is your first-time visiting New York and you want to see all the top landmarks, this double-decker tour bus will take you there.

The Big Bus Tour in New York

You may be wondering if a hop-on hop-off bus is worth it. Absolutely, yes!

If you consider the time and money spent on transportation costs, waiting for buses, navigating the subway (which can be confusing for visitors), and getting from one point of interest to another, it is worth every dollar!

I had a great visit to New York City on Big Bus Tour. My goal was to show the city to some friends from Italy who were visiting the US for the first time.

Since we only had about two days to spend together, the hop-on hop-off was undoubtedly the best decision.

From our experience, we’ll answer commonly asked questions about the Hop-on Hop-off bus while visiting New York City.

Google Reviews

Why take the big bus tour in new york.

While seeing New York from the open-top deck of the double-decker bus, the city unfolded block by block with panoramic views from every angle.

As we traveled through the streets, the sights were unobstructed and new visual backdrops were revealed.

The towering skyscrapers and colorful billboards filled the air with excitement and as the cityscape continued to change, it gave a grand feeling to the experience.

I especially enjoyed being able to relax from the upper deck of the bus while taking in the energy of city scenes.

Because I also live in a large city, the rhythm felt familiar from the elevated vantage point .

Car horns were honking, crowds traversed through the streets and there was an endless hum of activity.

Best of all, the tour gave me the chance to interact with other travelers who were seeing New York while waiting for the tour to began.

We struck up conversations and exchanged stories, insights, and recommendations during our stay in New York.

How Much is the Big Bus Tour in New York

The regular price of an adult and child ticket is $60.00 and $50.00, respectively. However, you can use the link below for discounted fares.

How Long is the Big Bus Tour in New York

The round-trip New York City Big Bus Tour takes about two hours from start to finish.

The bus is the perfect solution for visitors worldwide because they offer pre-recorded audio narratives and translations in five languages — French, German, Spanish, Italian, and English.

Are There Toilets on the Big Bus

No. Unlike charter buses, you won’t travel long between stops. So the best thing to do is exit at a stop, find a public restroom, see an attraction, if desired, and then catch the next bus.

If you are not sure where to find one, ask a Big Bus guide on the street. The driver may also have some suggestions.

Charter buses come equipped with a bathroom because travel is expected to be for a much longer period.

How Does the Big Bus Tour Work in New York City

The tour offers three options for purchase — 1-day, 2-day, and 3-day.

When you decide the number of days of your tour and purchase your ticket, the clock starts when your ticket is scanned while boarding the bus for the first time.

The ticket is good for 24, 48, or 72 hours. So, if you have a 1-day ticket and board the bus at 11:00 AM on Monday, it can still be used until 11:00 AM on Tuesday.

We found a ton of touring options for sightseeing in New York.

Aside from the extended period, the 2 and 3-day tickets also offer discounted bike rentals.

The buses run every 20 minutes on average. However, the first stop at the M&M store can be a long wait during peak season.

You can exit or board at any of the designated stops as much as you want.

The only exclusion is the one-loop tour Night Tour which is a panoramic non-stop tour.

Where to Catch the Big Bus Tour in New York City

During the tour, the buses only stop at designated stops.

Your ticket is good for as long as the buses operate during the day and it may be used on both the red and blue routes.

When you board, make sure you get a hop-on hop-off New York bus route map!

Big Bus NYC Red Route

The red route sightseeing tour covers lower Manhattan and you’ll see many landmarks like St. Patrick’s Cathedral, Wall Street, the Chrysler Building, and General Grant’s Tomb.

You can catch a tour at any one of the following bus stops and you can get your tickets in advance of boarding.

1 – M&M’s World – 7th Ave & W 48th St (Outside M&M World & Majestic Deli)

2 – Times Square East – W 42nd St & Broadway (at Knickerbocker Hotel)

3 – Empire State Building / Korea Town – 5th Ave & W 32nd St (at CVS Pharmacy)

4 – Flatiron District – 5th Ave & W 23rd St (at Eisenberg’s Sandwich Shop)

5 – SoHo – Broadway and Spring Street (at Nike Store)

6 – Chinatown / Little Italy – 100 Lafayette Street (near the corner at Walker St)

7 – Brooklyn Bridge – Park Row & Beekman St (across from 33 Park Row)

8 – Wall Street / Charging Bull – Broadway & Wall St (Southwest corner near Rector St)

9 – Statue of Liberty / Battery Park – State St and Bridge St (at Subway Entrance)

10 – Circle Line Sightseeing – 12th Ave & 40th St (opposite Pier 81)

11 – Times Square North – 7th Ave & W 50th St (at Majestic Deli)

Big Bus NYC Blue Route

The blue route covers upper Manhattan, and half of the ride is mostly views of Central Park. You can switch to the blue route at red stop #2.

We recommend changing routes at stop #11 (the Majestic Deli) where you can take a break and have a nice lunch.

12 – The Metropolitan Museum of Art – 5th Ave & E 83rd St (near 83rd St)

13 – Central Park Zoo – 5th Ave & E 66th St (opposite 845 5th Ave)

14 – Columbus Circle – Central Park & Columbus Circle (SW corner of Central Park)

Tips and Things to Know Before You Go

The bus has two levels, the upper level offers panoramic views of the city but be careful of overhanging traffic lights and trees. Don’t stand while the bus is in motion.

  • After you find a seat, check the audio to confirm it is working.
  • Snacks are allowed. Bring a frozen bottle of water and protein bites to keep you energized.
  • When on the upper deck, cover up with sunscreen to protect your skin on hot sunny days.
  • If you are a family of 3 or more, take seats across from one another so you’ll have views and photos from both sides of the bus.

Tourists were lined up at stop #1 at least an hour before departure and the line extended the entire block and rounded the corner.

We decided to see other points of interest and returned around 11:00 AM.

The wait to board the bus was about 20 minutes. It was a relaxing ride and there we saw so much!

By the time we reached stop #9, we were pumped and ready to exit the bus so that we could explore the city! And you probably will be too.

Here’s the secret sauce that really made the experience memorable. Exit at stop #9 and take a FREE ferry to Staten Island.

To see the Statue of Liberty, stand on the left side of the boat. When returning, stand on the right side.

Final Thoughts About the Big Bus Tour in New York City

Overall, the tour was a pleasant way to see New York city and when you are on the upper deck, you hardly notice the traffic.

Some other advantages of seeing the city by bus include:

  • Avoiding parking hassles. I mean, who actually drives in New York?!
  • Photo opportunities. With the open-top or large windows, you have excellent photo opportunities as you pass by iconic landmarks and cityscapes.
  • Comprehensive sightseeing of major landmarks and attractions within two hours.
  • You can get local recommendations from the guides who operate the bus.

I usually opt for a hop-on hop-off bus when I am short on time or to get my bearings in the city before deciding what to do.

Either way, when you take the tour bus, it doesn’t appear impossible to take a bite out of the Big Apple.

Happy Travels!

Biden and Trump win Rhode Island, Connecticut, New York and Wisconsin primaries

KENOSHA, Wis. (AP) — Voters in four states weighed in Tuesday on their parties’ presidential nominees, a largely symbolic vote now that both President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump have locked up the Democratic and Republican nominations.

Biden and Trump easily won primaries in Rhode Island, Connecticut, New York and Wisconsin, adding to their delegate hauls for their party conventions this summer.

Their victories, while hardly surprising, nevertheless offer clues about enthusiasm among base voters for the upcoming 2020 rematch that has left a majority of Americans underwhelmed. Biden has faced opposition from activists encouraging Democrats to vote against him to send a message of disapproval for his handling of the war between Israel and Hamas, and some Republican Trump critics are still voting for rivals who have dropped out.

“Uncommitted” in Rhode Island and Connecticut was getting a similar share of the Democratic vote as protest campaigns in Minnesota and Michigan, which got 19% and 13% respectively. In Wisconsin, “uninstructed delegation” was getting a smaller share.

In particular, the tallies in Wisconsin, a pivotal November battleground, will give hints about the share of Republicans who still aren’t on board with Trump and how many Democrats are disillusioned with Biden. Trump campaigned Tuesday in Wisconsin and Michigan, two Midwest battlegrounds.

“Donald Trump is the first person I can remember who actually tried to keep all of the promises that he made during the campaign,” said Scott Lindemann, a 62-year-old contractor in Kenosha, Wisconsin, who voted for the former president in the GOP primary. “I was very impressed with that.”

In New York, 70-year-old Steve Wheatley, a registered Republican, said he wishes there were more candidates to choose from. He said he voted for Nikki Haley even though “she has no shot” because of the lack of options.

“We need younger candidates with fresh ideas to run for president,” said Wheatley, a resident of Athens, a small town in the Hudson Valley. “I prefer a Democrat but our choices are thin. Look at what Biden has done so far with the economy.”

Theresa Laabs, a 55-year-old cashier in Kenosha, said her family is feeling the squeeze from higher food and gasoline prices, but she voted for Biden in the Democratic primary because she feels like he’s working to alleviate inflation.

“I understand it’s the economy now, and I’m hoping that Joe will keep working even harder in the next four years to try and bring these things down and make it easier for the working family,” Laabs said.

Trump and Biden turned their attention to the general election weeks ago after Haley dropped out of the GOP contest. Biden visited all the top battlegrounds last month after his State of the Union speech.

Biden and the Democratic National Committee have outpaced Trump and the Republicans in fundraising. Biden claimed the largest single-event fundraising record last week when he took in $26 million at a star-studded New York event last week with big names from the entertainment world teamed up with the president and his Democratic predecessors, Barack Obama and Bill Clinton.

Trump is looking to one-up his rival with a fundraiser in Palm Beach, Florida, this weekend that he hopes will bring in $33 million.

With the presidential candidates locking up their parties’ nominations, turnout was slow in Rhode Island, where only 4% of eligible voters had cast ballots by 5 p.m., a figure that included Tuesday’s in-person votes as well as mail-in and early votes.

It was slow across the border in Connecticut as well, where early voting was held for the first time in state history. Secretary of the State Stephanie Thomas said turnout was only 1% to 2% in some communities by 11 a.m., while it was 4% in Stamford, one of the state’s larger cities. “What we have been hearing on the ground from people over the last few weeks is that this isn’t a competitive primary,” she said about the low numbers.

Blithewold Mansion, Gardens, & Arboretum — Self-Guided Tour

  • 101 Ferry Road, Bristol, RI 02809
  • April 3, 2024 - September 29, 2024

Blithewold, a 33-acre summer estate with grand views of Narragansett Bay, is nationally significant in American history as one of the most fully developed and authentic examples of the Country Place era. The property features a 45-room mansion filled with family heirlooms framed by a series of lovely gardens that range in character from mysterious to exotic and from poetic to practical.

Blithewold Self-Guided Tour:

Is your group (parties of 8 or more) more likely to "take it all in" on their own without the structure of a guided tour? We've got that! Interpretive panels are strategically placed throughout the Estate which allows for a less formal, more meandering way to explore the mansion, gardens and grounds.

Once you've spent an hour or so enjoying the property your group may like some light refreshments or lunch. Plenty of lovely spots to sit and enjoy; our covered porches overlooking The Bosquet or the Narragansett Bay or our picnic area adjacent to the Rose Garden. The Kitchen at Blithewold is prepared work with you to prepare something special for your group.
