The Best Time To Visit Savannah, GA

A view of Savannah's River Street as seen from Hutchinson Island at sunset.

Probably the best time to visit Savannah is spring, with the fall months coming a close second.

Spring is when Savannah blooms, with many of the shrubs and trees in the squares and parks and along its streets flowering around March and April (the precise timing varies year-to-year). The weather too is at its best, and several of the city’s most popular annual events and festivals are held at this time of year.

Fall also offers usually excellent weather, with many days of sun and temperatures that are warm but not excessively hot. This season too offers some of the best of Savannah’s events.

Savannah is a beautiful destination year-round, though, and other times of year each have something to offer: festivals and events, good weather, smaller crowds or lower prices.

How long to visit Savannah for depends on how much you want to see. Many people like to visit for a long weekend, which is enough time to see the best of the Historic District and a few attractions. If you will want to see more of the city and the Georgia and South Carolina coast, plan a longer visit.

Savannah is easily combined with a trip to the equally beautiful Charleston, only around two hours or so north of the city. Several seafront communities are likewise within only an hour or two of Savannah, which make for an especially appealing side trip in the hot summer months.

The Best Time To Visit Savannah For Flowers

Savannah’s beautiful architecture and squares make it a joy to visit at any time of the year. To see the city at its very most visually captivating, though, visit in late March to early April, when the azaleas and other shrubs, and flowering trees such as the dogwood, are at their peak.

If you want to see the classic southern tree, the magnolia, in bloom, aim for later spring through early summer.

Even if you miss the best of Savannah’s flowers, you can still enjoy the appeal and atmosphere of the drapes of Spanish moss that hang from the city’s trees, as the moss is there year-round.

When To Go To Savannah For The Best Weather

Savannah’s subtropical climate produces weather that ranges from mild in the winter, through pleasantly warm in the spring and fall months, to humid and often uncomfortably hot at the height of summer.

For the best weather, visit in spring or fall, when it is warm without being too hot, and rainfall is at its lowest. Savannah is a city best seen on foot, so visiting at either of these times of year will be a more comfortable experience.

Temperatures in spring peak on average in the 70s to 80s. In summer, the average daily maximum temperature tops 90°F, returning to spring temperatures in fall. For most of the year, rainfall is around 3 inches per month, rising to 5-6+ inches in the summer.

Winter brings cooler weather, and the humidity can make it feel quite cold. It is also more likely to be overcast at this time of year, although sunny and warm weather is quite possible.

Freezing temperatures are rare (as is snow), with average daily maximum temperatures in the low 60s and minimum nighttime temperatures averaging around 40°F or higher.

If you especially mind the heat, try to avoid the hottest (and wettest) months, July and August. September too can often be hot and humid.

Hurricane risk is lower in Savannah than other southeastern cities, due to its position relative to the usual storm track, but hurricanes are possible from June through November. Ordinary thunderstorms are frequent in the summer months.

Any of the warmer months, including spring, bring a large number of insects. Repellent is advised, especially if you plan any trips into the surrounding lowcountry.

When To Visit Savannah For The Biggest Events

→ See Savannah’s festivals and events by month: January, February, March, April, May, June, July, August, September, October, November, December

→ See also: Georgia festivals in March, April, May, September and October

Most of the larger events held in Savannah are scheduled for the spring and fall months. Some of these events draw enormous numbers out-of-town visitors, and it can be harder to find a place to stay (and eat and park) on the days the festival is held.

In spring, some of the city’s most beautiful historic homes and gardens are opened to the public. The Savannah Tour of Homes and Gardens is held around late March, and the North of Gwinnett Street Tour of Hidden Gardens around mid April.

Spring music festivals include the Savannah Music Festival, the largest music festival in Georgia, held over two weeks around late March into April. Also in March is another smaller music festival, the Savannah Stopover.

Each year, Savannah holds one of the biggest St Patrick’s Day parades in the world. Huge numbers of visitors come to Savannah on and around March 17 to enjoy the festivities.

Bigger events are rare in the hot and humid summer, but fall brings cooler temperatures and with them another wave of festivals: the Savannah Jazz Festival in late September Oktoberfest --> and the Savannah Film Festival in October. The Great Ogeechee Seafood Festival, one of the region’s largest seafood festivals, is held in nearby Richmond Hill, GA over several days.

Savannah’s event calendar winds down in winter, but the light displays and decorations of the holiday season around Christmas and New Year’s Eve bring many people to the city. The Black Heritage Festival is held in February, to coincide with Black History Month.

The Cheapest Time To Visit Savannah

Savannah has two main tourist seasons. The biggest is spring and early summer, March through early July. Another peak comes in fall.

The best prices for accommodation can be found in the off-season, which for Savannah is in winter. Although Savannah is becoming a year-round destination, January and February are generally less popular with tourists, and you can expect to be sharing the city with fewer people at this time of year.

The Christmas to New Year period is the exception to the winter lull, when many people like to visit for the lights and holiday festivities.

In Savannah, you might also find better prices in high summer (late July through August), when vacationers are drawn instead to the beaches and sea islands of the coast.

The Best Time To Go To Savannah If You Are Also Visiting Charleston

Charleston is only 100 miles up the coast from Savannah, and many people like to combine visits to the two cities into a single trip.

→ Information about travel options between Savannah and Charleston

Charleston’s proximity to Savannah means that it shares most of its climatic characteristics, with the same mild winters and hot, humid summers.

However, although spring is generally considered to be the best time to go to Savannah, in Charleston the fall season (late September through early November) is spring’s equal — and for many, the more agreeable time of year.

You will enjoy both cities in either season, but broadly speaking, if you want Charleston to look its best, go in spring, especially April. If you prefer cultural activities, museums and festivals, choose fall.

If you decide on springtime for your trip to Savannah and Charleston, make Savannah the first stop and Charleston the second, as the plants bloom a little later there.

The Best Time To Visit Savannah As Part Of A Trip To Georgia

Georgia is one of the most popular destination states for people who want to see the South, and you may wish to see other of its attractions as part of your trip to Savannah.

On the whole, the best times to visit Savannah hold true for the rest of the state, but there are a few variations and special factors to consider, depending on which of Georgia’s other regions you want to see.

North Georgia Mountains

The mountains of northern Georgia (5-6 hours drive from Savannah) are one of the most beautiful parts of the state in which to enjoy the outdoors. Georgia as a whole is best avoided around July and August, but if this is when you have to travel, a visit to the mountains offers a cooler and more pleasant respite from the heat and humidity of summer.

North Georgia is also a popular destination for autumn leaf watching, with the region’s state parks the best place from which to enjoy the fall foliage. Georgia’s dominant autumn colors are orange and gold, and they are usually at their peak around late October to early to mid November.

If you do want to visit the mountains, it is best to avoid traveling in winter. Although the rest of Georgia is usually mild and snow-free, ice and snow can both present problems in the most upland parts of the state at this time of year, and you may find many outdoor attractions and trails are closed.

Sea Islands

The main charm of Georgia’s barrier islands, from Tybee down to the Golden Isles of Jekyll and St Simons, is the beach and other outdoor activities. None of the most-visited islands are more than 100 miles from Savannah, with Tybee Island the nearest and easiest to get to.

Spring through fall are the ideal times to visit Georgia’s barrier islands, where the region’s hot summers are made more bearable by cooling ocean breezes and the water itself, which should be warm enough for swimming from May through September.

Atlanta is one of the primary destinations in the South (and the USA) for its cultural attractions and range of things to do. It is around 4 hours or so by car from Savannah, and easily accessible by other modes of transport too.

→ Travel options between Savannah and Atlanta

So far as tourism goes, the high and low seasons in Atlanta are less marked than in Savannah, and in contrast to the summer lull in Savannah’s events calendar, Atlanta’s festivals and outdoor events continue year-round.

Still, spring and fall are the better times to see Atlanta, when the flowers and autumn foliage, respectively, are at their peak and the city is at its best. If you are thinking of visiting in winter, bear in mind that the weather in Atlanta is somewhat colder than Savannah and the coast.

The Best Times to Visit Savannah For Good Weather, Fewer Crowds, and Lower Prices

And when to spot the Southern city's blooming azaleas, too.

best month to visit savannah ga

The historic architecture and palpable charm of Savannah, Georgia, make it one of the most beautiful cities in the South. Live oaks dripping in Spanish moss loom over stately town squares, and a thriving culinary scene draws foodies from around the country. Thanks to its coastal location, Savannah has a consistently mild (if humid) climate, but the weather fluctuations that do exist help dictate its tourist seasons, which are as follows.

  • High Season: March to July
  • Shoulder Season: August to December
  • Low Season: January to February

Spring brings azalea blooms and the lion's share of tourists, but don't overlook the shoulder season, says Amanda Marks, a Les Clefs d’Or concierge at Thompson Savannah . “I love our fall weather, and recommend coming to Savannah in November before Thanksgiving."

Keep reading for more details on the best times to visit Savannah for fantastic weather, smaller crowds, lower prices, and more.

Best Times to Visit Savannah for Smaller Crowds

“In my 20 years living here, I’ve found that Savannah is most crowded in spring (March, April, and May) and fall (September, October, and early November),” Marks says. So if you’re looking to admire Georgian homes or amble down River Street with fewer people around, consider booking your trip in January or February. Marks says that January is the quietest month in terms of travelers, but that some attractions may be closed this time of year, too.

Summer is another less-busy season, though it also brings challenging weather. Temperatures around 90 degrees Fahrenheit are common in July and August, and humidity is usually sky-high, too. If you can tolerate that — or if the main goal for your trip is simply to enjoy the city's delightful (and air-conditioned) restaurants and nearby beaches — a summer visit may be worth considering, since it'll likely reward you with smaller-than-average crowds.

Best Times to Visit Savannah for Good Weather

The best weather in Savannah comes in spring and fall. Temperatures range from the high 50s to the mid-80s from March to June, when trees and flowers — most notably, azaleas — come into bloom and adorn the city with lush hues of green and pink. Prepare for a spring visit by packing layers, including a rain jacket or umbrella. “Nearly every afternoon, at around 3 p.m., it will rain for 30 to 40 minutes,” Marks says. But don’t let a little rain deter you. “Savannah is beautiful during and right after the rain. When the Spanish moss is draped with raindrops, it sparkles in the sun,” she explains.

If you can’t swing an early spring trip, Perry Lane Hotel staffer and lifelong Savannah resident Mandy Heldreth says to aim for June. You might squeeze in a visit just before the higher temperatures and humidity arrive, which tends to be in July and August.

The autumn portion of Savannah’s shoulder season, from mid-September to mid-November, is another time to find travel-friendly weather. Heldreth says that this is when “the city begins to cool off” again, with daytime temps in the low 70s.

Best Times to Visit Savannah for Lower Prices

Unsurprisingly, the limited demand seen in Savannah’s off-season translates to lower prices on accommodations. “When visiting in the off-season — before President’s Day, during the summer, or from November through the end of the year — more savings can be had," says Marks, "and exploring the city may be more enjoyable and easier to navigate with less foot traffic around." Try visiting at these less-popular times for a deal on the great hotels that showcase Savannah's Southern hospitality.

Off-peak months like January and November can also bring discounted airfare — though there's a chance you can snag a deal on flights at any time of year. Savannah/Hilton Head International Airport is served by several budget carriers, including Allegiant , which connects the city to nearly a dozen major and not-so-major airports (Appleton, Wisconsin, anyone?) across the country. Though you'll have to pack light and watch out for hidden fees, these airlines can be a great way to get to Savannah for the lowest price possible.

Best Times to Visit Savannah for Events and Festivals

Like Charleston and other Southern cities, Savannah hosts many events and festivals in the spring and fall, when the weather is at its best. “St. Patrick’s Day is considered a holiday in Savannah,” Marks says, “and while many attractions and tours are closed, we do have a fantastic parade to watch and enjoy.” Music and art are also a large part of local culture — the city is home to Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD), after all — and spring celebrations include the Savannah Music Festival and the SCAD Sidewalk Arts Festival . “The art students gather in Forsyth Park and draw on the sidewalks, creating beautiful masterpieces for everyone to enjoy,” Marks says of the latter.

In September, Savannah Jazz Festival’s live performances are held at Lucas Theatre, the Ships of the Sea Maritime Museum, and Forsyth Park over the course of a week. October has its own set of events and festivals, too, including SCAD Savannah Film Festival , Savannah Pride , and the Savannah Greek Festival . Plus, it's a great time to enjoy the city's famous spooky side .

Worst Times to Visit Savannah

Though it's more affordable and less crowded, summer in Savannah isn't ideal for most travelers, given the sweltering temperatures and oppressive humidity found in July and August. Unless you love heat, it's best to avoid visiting during this stretch. Also on the subject of weather, it's smart to note that hurricane season runs from June to November. Though Savannah isn't as vulnerable to tropical storms as much of the southeast (thanks to the sharp inward curve the coastline takes just north of the city), a direct or indirect hit is always possible — and it may be a risk some travelers would prefer to avoid.

Spring is generally regarded as the best season to visit the city, but if you're more interested in affordability than perfect weather, you may want to bypass the pricey peak period. The off-season months of January and February are some of the most affordable of the year, and though they won't be warm and sunny, they won't be ice-cold either — winter temperatures rarely dip below 40 degrees.

  • For Summer Vacation
  • For Fall Escape
  • For Winter Getaway

There’s never a bad time of the year to visit charming Savannah, Georgia—it is the Hostess City, after all. And it's also home to amazing restaurants , a thriving arts scene, and more history than you can ever explore in one trip. But depending on your travel preferences and priorities, there are certain months that might be better than others.

Savannah’s high season is March to June, when the weather is sunny but mild, and the city is filled with flowers and fun things to do . But other months of the year are cheaper and less crowded, which might be even more appealing than azalea season for some travelers.

Read on for our tips on making your most out of your Savannah vacation. Whatever time of the year you choose to go, you’ll be in for a wonderful time.

The Best Time To Visit Savannah For Nice Weather

One of the best things about Savannah is its walkability, so weather is an important factor to consider when planning your trip. For sunny days that aren’t swelteringly hot and humid, April and May are ideal months to visit. The city’s many parks are in bloom, outdoor dining is extra pleasant, and strolling from neighborhood to neighborhood is a joy. You also might be in town for the annual NOGS (“North of Gaston Street”) Tour of Hidden Gardens , which allows you to explore private and historic gardens that are otherwise not open to the public.

The Best Time To Visit Savannah For Lower Prices

Savannah’s off season is January and February, so this is the prime time to score a deal on flights and hotels. While the winter months aren’t as picturesque (you won’t find any azaleas blooming), it’s still not a bad time to enjoy the city. It does get down to the 30s and 40s at night, but daytime temperatures typically range from the late 50s to the upper 60s, which is still quite comfortable if you’re dressed accordingly.

The Best Time To Visit Savannah For Less Crowds

Another time to visit for less money is late July to September. Summer temperatures peak during this window, which scares off some visitors. You can still have a great time if you spend most of your time indoors at museums, shops, and restaurants—all of which are in abundance in Savannah, and more enjoyable with less crowds. Because hotel rates are lower during this time, you can (and should) splurge on one that has a pool.

The Best Time To Visit Savannah In The Spring

Savannah is breathtakingly beautiful in the spring, but there is a sweet spot during this season. Between late March and early April, the city is splashed in vivid pink, red, and purple hues as the azaleas come into bloom. It’s the best time to visit Savannah’s historic Bonaventure Cemetery , which is filled with azaleas, as well as the Savannah Botanical Garden . An added bonus for music lovers: It’s also time for the city’s annual music festival, which has an exciting and diverse lineup of musicians from around the world.

Memorial Day weekend is a busy time in Savannah, and for good reason. The weather is gorgeous, and you can hit up the beach on nearby Tybee Island. The city offers plenty of free, family-friendly activities like live performances along River Street overlooking the Savannah River. If you’re lucky enough to score tickets (book them in advance), you can attend a Savannah Bananas baseball game, one of the most fun sporting events in the world.

The Best Time To Visit Savannah In The Fall

This historic city has a spooky side, so plan your visit for October. You can take your pick from several ghost tours, including ones through Bonaventure Cemetery, which takes on a completely different vibe at night. The Savannah Theater , which dates back to 1818, is said to be haunted, and has special programming centered on its ghosts. If you’re looking for something less scary, the Plant Riverside District hosts Oktoberfest events, and the Savannah Philharmonic brings music to area parks. October also brings welcome relief from the summer heat, and it’s a lovely time of year to stroll around and take in the fall decorations on doorsteps and shop windows.

The Best Time To Visit Savannah In The Winter

Joseph Shields/Getty Images

Winter in the Lowcountry usually doesn’t involve snow, but you’ll find plenty of holiday cheer during the month of December. The city has a busy calendar of events, like the Christmas Market at the Plant Riverside District. And if you’re looking for gifts, there are shops filled with treasures, like the Paris Market, Savannah Candy Kitchen, and the City Market. And wandering around can be fun too. Downtown streets are dressed up in twinkling lights and magnolia swags, hotel lobbies are warm and cozy with fireplaces and Christmas trees, and there’s even an annual boat parade of lights on the riverfront.

Travelers flock to Savannah , Georgia, to see its picture-perfect scenery – like a time capsule of years past with carefully preserved architecture.

Savannah’s location in the coastal plain region puts it in a subtropical climate, meaning visitors can enjoy mild temperatures nearly year-round. But each season brings its own advantages and drawbacks. Summer is the most popular, but the heat can be overwhelming, and prices are at their highest. The winter, meanwhile, offers discounted rates but fewer things to do in terms of events.

But no matter what time of year you’re drawn to the Hostess City, you’re sure to enjoy yourself. Here's everything you need to know about what each season holds in Savannah.

The facade of the yellow Telfair Academy, a historic mansion and museum

January to February is the best time for budget travelers

Considered to be Savannah’s low season, the first months of the year are ideal for visitors looking to get the most for their money. Hotel prices can be at their lowest, apart from the dates around the New Year. For those used to cold temperatures, a winter trip to Savannah can be very comfortable, as it never dips well below 40°F.

If you’re looking to travel with your beloved, this is a great time for a weekend getaway as you can get a good deal on a hotel room, which leaves extra cash for a nice dinner and spa treatment. This is also the best time of year for first-time travelers and those looking to see the top sites without the crowds. It’s easy to hop on the trolley or a walking tour.

You also won’t have to face long lines at places you’d typically have to wait for, like Mrs Wilkes Boarding House , a famous family-style restaurant that has been serving up hearty Southern fare since 1943.

March to June is the best for cultural events

Despite the balmy temperatures through these months, it’s also Savannah’s high season due to the abundance of things to do, including some of the city’s most popular annual events, and the influx of spring break travelers. With the azaleas in bloom, photo ops are all around you.

If you want to be one of the many revelers attending the annual St Patrick’s Day festivities, be sure to book your hotel well ahead of time and bring plenty of green to wear! The month of June is an excellent time to check out Savannah’s landmarks focusing on its Black history, like the Pin Point Heritage Museum , the Ralph Mark Gilbert Civil Rights Museum , the Savannah African Art Museum and the Beach Institute African-American Cultural Center .

Expect to pay a premium for those hotel rooms, so book well in advance if you can. Making meal reservations is also a good idea, especially if you want a table at bucket-list-worthy establishments like The Grey and Husk . Expect to wait in line at walk-up spots like Leopold’s Ice Cream as well, and eat quickly as your sweets will begin to melt with temperatures ranging between 50 to 70F.

The fishing pier and Atlantic Ocean at Tybee Island, Georgia.

July to mid-September is best for museum-hopping

The other low season in Savannah is the peak of summer, and if you visit during this time, you’ll quickly learn why. The heat and humidity can be overwhelming, especially to the uninitiated, when temperatures reach 90F and above.

But the silver lining is that there are some deals to be had for visitors when it comes to hotel prices. It’s a wise idea to include “hotels with pools” in your search parameters. The Westin Savannah , the Perry Lane Hotel and the Thompson Savannah are all excellent spots to cool off after an afternoon of exploring.

If you plan to hit the beach, get an early start heading to Tybee Island because many others will have the same idea. The water may not be exactly refreshing, but it’s at least better than sweating it out on River Street.

But if the heat gets to be too much for you, seek solace inside Savannah’s museums and cultural attractions. Between the two buildings of the Telfair Museums , you can see hundreds of years’ worth of art, not to mention the dozens of historic house museums. There are also museums curated to specific interests, including the Savannah Children’s Museum and the American Prohibition Museum , with its own speakeasy.

Summer also signals the start of the minor league baseball season. The Savannah Bananas have a very  enthusiastic fanbase , so you’ll want to secure those tickets early! And when you go, be sure to deck yourself out in yellow, just as the locals do.

Mid-September to December is the best for the outdoors

The fall and early winter are Savannah’s best weather periods, though they also bring the rainy season – come prepared with an umbrella in case you get caught in a sudden but brief storm. This also falls during hurricane season, but because the city is located on the river instead of directly on the ocean, impacts are infrequent.

Hotels can be at their most affordable, especially if you’re visiting in conjunction with one of the many events like Halloween, the Tybee Pirate Festival , the SCAD Savannah Film Festival or Savannah Pride .

The weather is at its best for spending time outside, whether you’re looking to enjoy holiday shopping on Broughton Street, outdoor dining on one of Savannah’s plentiful patios or hiking the trails at Skidaway Island State Park . The mosquitoes have also, blessedly, disappeared for the season, but if you’re back in the woods, be mindful of ticks. This is also the ideal time to explore the nearby islands, like Little Tybee , by kayak.

Your Trip to Savannah: The Complete Guide

TripSavvy / Ivey Redding

best month to visit savannah ga

From its oak-covered public squares and historic architecture to its moderate climate and coastal beauty, this Georgia city is a worthy year-round destination. Located just four hours from Atlanta and two hours from Charleston , the city is a great side trip from either of those cities as well as a worthy destination in its own right.

With its well-preserved Historic District, endless festivals, interactive museums, award-winning restaurants, and more, Savannah has plenty of activities for all seasons, visitors, and ages. Here's a complete guide about when to visit, where to stay, what to do, getting around, saving money, and more on your visit to Savannah.

Planning Your Trip to Savannah

  • Best Time to Visit: With azaleas and flowers in full bloom, favorable weather, and a full roster of festivals like the annual St. Patrick's Day parade, spring is the most popular season for visiting Savannah. Summers can be oppressively hot and humid, but there are nearby beach and water-related activities to help you keep cool, and the city is less crowded in July and August than it is in spring and early summer. Fall offers fantastic weather and fewer tourists than spring, while winter can be chilly, but provides lower hotel rates and smaller crowds.
  • Language: English
  • Currency: U.S. Dollar
  • Getting Around : Because parking is expensive and navigating one-way streets can be tricky, the Historic District is best explored on foot or via the fare-free Downtown Transportation (DOT) network , which offers shuttle buses and a ferry to popular tourist areas and centrally-located parking garages. The buses operate every ten minutes, starting at 7.am. on weekdays and 10 a.m. on weekends and make 24 stops along both the Downtown and Forsyth Park routes. The broader, fare-based Chatham Area Transit (CAT) offers service to other parts of the cities and surrounding areas, including an express bus to and from Savannah/Hilton Head International Airport. Rideshare services, taxis, and rental cars are also available at the airport.

The city also has a thriving nightlife, with both dive bars and elegant cocktail joints, as well as several local breweries and distilleries.

No trip to the city is complete without a visit to The Grey, a 1930s Art Deco Greyhound bus terminal turned modern Southern restaurant. Where to Stay

  • Historic District: From luxury options like the DeSoto Savannah on Madison Square, like the riverfront adjacent Alida , and the boutique Perry Lane to reliable chains like the Hampton Inn and Fairfield Inn & Suites and the pet-friendly Kimpton Brice , the historic district has hotel options for every budget and is the most convenient to the city's biggest and most popular attractions.
  • Midtown: Just a 10-minute drive from the Historic District, Midtown is a quieter option with plenty of restaurants, parks, and activities for visitors. Most standard chains like Courtyard by Marriott, Hampton Inn & Suites and the La Quinta Inn have properties here.
  • Pooler: For travelers on a budget, there are several options near the Savannah/Hilton Head International Airport, like the Best Western Plus, Comfort Inn & Suites, and Quality Inn, all of which are about a 20-minute drive from downtown.

Getting There

Savannah/Hilton Head International Airport (SAV) offers direct flights to and from Dallas-Fort Worth, Houston, Newark, New York City, Philadelphia, and Washington, D.C., and other U.S. cities via major airlines like American, Delta, JetBlue, and United.

The drive from the airport to downtown is approximately 20-25 minutes. You can rent a car at the airport or catch a rideshare like Lyft or Uber or hail a taxi just outside of the baggage claim. Chatham Area Transit also offers bus service to and from several points in the city, including downtown.

Savannah is an easy drive from nearby major cities like Charleston, South Carolina (108 miles north), Atlanta (250 miles), and Jacksonville, Florida (140 miles). Most of the city's hotels have parking lots or valet, so driving a car into the city isn't an issue, as long as you don't mind paying parking fees.

Money-Saving Tips

  • Take advantage of the city's public green spaces and parks. With 22 public squares in the Historic District alone, you're never far from a free place to wander and marvel at the city's trees, flowers, and architecture.
  • Book a hotel in offseason. Hotel rates can skyrocket during tourist seasons (particularly spring through the end of June), so try visiting during a less busy month like February or August.
  • Tour churches and cemeteries. These are some of the city's most notable spaces and many, like Bonaventure Cemetery (the city's most extensive and featured prominently in the book and later the film version of "Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil"), have free walking tours.
  • Consider purchasing a city TourPass, which has one, two, and three-day options starting at $72 for adults and $42 for children. The pass includes admission to over 30 top city attractions like the Savannah History Museum and Telfair Academy, plus trolley privileges.

Savannah, GA | Savannah.com

When is the Best Season to Visit Savannah?

Savannah’s not just a city. She’s as much of a character as those who live among her history. Spanish moss hangs off Palmetto and live oak trees like streamers for an eternal party. Like any personality, Savannah has her moods: spring, summer, fall and winter. Each one is unique. But, Savannah’s seasons provide consistent airs of unpredictability, excitement and authentic southern splendidness. Here is a glimpse to help you decide for yourself which is the best season to visit Savannah.

Best Season to Visit

Savannah’s location in the Coastal Empire might mislead guests into thinking the temperature never drops below 60 degrees. What’s wonderful about spring is that it features a bit of summer’s heat with winter’s cooler winds. The stars of spring are the blooming pink azaleas, which decorate the bushes of Savannah’s squares, from March to April, and add a dash of vibrancy to events such as the Savannah Tour of Homes and Gardens. Speaking of touring, Savannah’s music scene reaches its peak with the Savannah Stopover and the Savannah Music Festival in March.

Spring also signals the unofficial season of luck, with one of the nation’s largest St. Patrick’s Day parades. You don’t know serious celebration dedication until you witness the dying of the Forsyth Park fountain shamrock green. The highlight is the parade to end all St. Paddy’s Day parades, which travels across the Historic District, igniting the luck of the Irish throughout Savannah’s streets.

Best Season to Visit

Summer in Savannah is (literally) the hottest time of the year to visit, which is a good thing for those looking for a quick getaway. During the hot southern summers, all kinds of businesses, from hotels to sightseeing tours , offer deals and discounts you won’t find during the other seasons. Indulge your inner, deprived beach bum by visiting Savannah’s beautiful and secluded neighboring islands. Less than an hour drive away, both Hilton Head and Tybee Island offer ideal escapes for weekend or day trips.

The biggest bash of the season arrives in early July, as Tybee’s Independence Day fireworks light up the South Beach Pier in tandem with Savannah’s own display over the Savannah River. Before night falls, River Street hosts its traditional Fourth of July Celebration with free admission and live music stretched along its iconic cobblestone walkway.

However, you don’t have to wait until July for an excuse to enjoy the heat. River Street also entertains jazz enthusiasts and foodies at their Savannah Blues, Jazz & BBQ Festival. Sponsored by the Savannah Waterfront Association, this signature outdoor celebration of deep southern blues and barbeque features renowned local musicians and the city’s best BBQ vendors.

Best Season to Visit. Forsyth Park Fountain in Savannah

Pardon the pun, but there really is no better time to “fall” in love with Savannah than in autumn. Much like spring, fall is a pleasant transitional period from the humidity of summer to the slight sweater weather of winter. There may not be an array of leaves changing colors, as evergreen trees dominate the Hostess City of the South, but there certainly is an array of exciting events and fun fall festivals. Compared to summer’s calendar of events , fall’s itinerary (along with hotel rates) triples thanks to milder forecasts. Next to spring, fall is one of the most active times for Savannah due to the volume of high-profile events, notably the Savannah Film Festival, a weeklong celebration of cinema’s next-big-films.

The fall fun commences in September with every meat lover’s dream, Bacon Fest on River Street. The Savannah Craft Brew Fest is a great way to wash down the many meals eaten over Labor Day weekend. October welcomes in German beers and bratwurst for Savannah’s Oktoberfest as well as buccaneers and extravagant costumes for the Tybee Island Pirate Fest.

Best Season to Visit. Savannah Holiday Christmas Lights in the Squares

The holidays in Savannah have a special lineup of traditions. The Lighted Christmas Parade to the Up the Cup New Year’s Eve Celebration on River Street are two beloved activities. Christmas decorations are taken quite seriously in Savannah. The city decks the street lights along Broughton Street with garland. A large Christmas tree at the intersection of Bull Street and Broughton is another yuletide attraction. Almost every square is adorned in ornaments, lights, and seasonal Southern splendor. It’s an incredible time to enjoy the city. The crowds all but dissipate, yet all the tours continue to operate and the weather usually stays in the mid-60s.

Come January, the holiday season evolves into a period of entertaining educational events like the Black Heritage Festival. This month-long series of events include performances and an arts festival all throughout February. February also brings the Savannah Book Festival. The festival hosts distinguished keynote speakers and best-selling authors for a weekend dedicated to the power of writing and reading. Two smaller, albeit equally enjoyable, film festivals also make their way down south in January and February. The Telluride Mountainfilm on Tour and the Gray’s Reef Ocean Film Festival make for a perfect indoor activity.

Plan the Perfect Trip to Savannah

Savannah Weather by Month

  • by Erin Clarkson

Infographic showing Savannah weather by month with icons for sun and storms, plus high and low temperatures and sunrise/sunset times

I keep getting weather questions in my Savannah Facebook group, so I figured it was about time to do a “Savannah weather by month” rundown.

Anytime I’m asked a question multiple times, I know I need to write a post about the topic! That’s how my “Best Time of Year to Visit Savannah” post came about.

Now, please keep in mind that I’m not an official weatherperson. I typically turn to Jeremy Nelson at WJCL for his eerily accurate forecasts or to Enki Research when I need non-sensationalized hurricane news.

However, I do know enough about what to expect from Savannah’s weather to help a newbie out.

If you’re new around here, first of all…allow me to extend a warm welcome !

My name is Erin, and I authored the Savannah First-Timer’s Guide .

I live in Savannah, and I have fun helping visitors plan their first trip to the city.

Savannah Georgia Weather by Month

Just so you know, I’ve written about what to expect weather-wise for each month in Savannah in detail below, but if you prefer to see the information in a quick glance, hopefully this handy infographic will help.

Infographic showing Savannah weather by month with icons for sun and storms, plus high and low temperatures and sunrise/sunset times

Also, just so you know, I’m not a fan of hot weather.

That means my opinion tends to skew in favor of the cooler months.

I really need to get someone who loves the heat to comment on what’s nice about Savannah during the summertime, since I have a difficult time coming up with any perks!

Ok, let’s move on to the monthly play-by-play of Savannah’s weather.

Savannah Weather in January

Average Low: 40°F Average High: 61°F Typical Number of Rainy Days: 9.3 days | 3.69 inches

Pinnable graphic showing Savannah weather in January with average highs/lows, precipitation, and sunrise/sunset times

Perks: January is the coldest month of the year in Savannah. However, “cold” is a relative term.

Some days might have highs in the 70s and you’ll see people walking around in shorts, while other days might bring a cold front with biting wind and lows in the 20s.

One thing you probably won’t see is snow. The last major snowfall was in January of 2018 (a whopping two inches).

Drawbacks: I suppose the biggest drawback is that January weather is very wishy-washy.

If you’re making travel plans months in advance, it’s difficult to know if you’ll end up with a good week of weather or a dreary one.

What’s Blooming in Savannah in January: Camellias, Japanese magnolias (aka: tulip trees), star magnolias, and redbuds.

The Southern live oaks are green during January, and the Spanish moss is in the trees year-round.

You might spot resurrection fern after a fresh rainfall.

Savannah Weather in February

Average Low: 43°F Average High: 65°F Typical Number of Rainy Days: 7.9 days | 2.79 inches

Pinnable graphic showing Savannah weather in February with average highs/lows, precipitation, and sunrise/sunset times

Perks: The days start getting longer in February, with sunsets happening after 6 pm.

The weather is a mixed bag, with some chilly days and many pleasant ones.

One cool thing about February is that the wide swings in temperature can cause some really foggy days that are incredible for photography (or for enhancing the mood of ghost tours with a spooky atmosphere).

Rainy days are minimal in February.

Drawbacks: Same as January…it’s difficult to predict if the weather will be nice or not-so-great.

What’s Blooming in Savannah in February: Camellias, Japanese magnolias (aka: tulip trees), star magnolias, redbuds, and sometimes early-season azaleas.

The Southern live oaks are green during January, and the Spanish moss is in the trees year-round. You might spot resurrection fern after a fresh rainfall.

Savannah Weather in March

Average Low: 49°F Average High: 71°F Typical Number of Rainy Days: 7.4 days | 3.73 inches

Pinnable graphic showing Savannah weather in March with average highs/lows, precipitation, and sunrise/sunset times

Perks: March is considered chamber of commerce weather.

The temperatures are mild, the humidity levels comfortable, and it rains just often enough to make the flowers look pretty.

Make note that Daylight Savings Time occurs in March, so it starts staying light out much later.

Drawbacks: Sometimes a rare chilly day comes along that might cause you to regret leaving the hotel in short sleeves with no jacket.

The pollen makes an appearance in March, so nearly every surface is covered in a dusting of yellow pollen. You can wipe a car off and an hour later it’ll be yellow again.

What’s Blooming in Savannah in March : Prime azalea season usually falls in March!

You’ll see seas of pink and white flowers nearly everywhere you look. T

he Southern live oaks start losing their leaves in March, but as they drop they’re replaced by new growth. That means there’s never a time when the trees look completely bare.

The Spanish moss remains in the trees year-round.

NOTE: Since March is such a popular month, I’ve written an in-depth post about it here: Savannah Weather in March (Includes Photos!)

Savannah Weather in April

Average Low : 55°F Average High: 78°F Typical Number of Rainy Days: 6.6 days | 3.07 inches

Pinnable graphic showing Savannah weather in April with average highs/lows, precipitation, and sunrise/sunset times

Perks: April brings another month of chamber of commerce weather.

The temperatures are mild with warm afternoons and cooler evenings. It doesn’t rain very much during April.

Drawbacks: You’ll still find some pollen hanging around in Savannah in April.

Overall, there isn’t much to complain about this month.

What’s Blooming in Savannah in April: Azaleas are often still blooming — especially in shadier areas.

Confederate jasmine (aka: star jasmine) may start blooming towards the end of the month.

Dogwoods usually bloom heavily during April.

Some of the Southern live oaks are still busy shedding leaves and growing new ones this month, but they won’t look bare at any time.

The Spanish moss is in the trees year-round. (I’m just going to keep repeating that for the readers who skip directly to the month they’re interested in.)

Savannah Weather in May

Average Low: 63°F Average High: 85°F Typical Number of Rainy Days: 6.5 days | 2.98 inches

Pinnable graphic showing Savannah weather in May with average highs/lows, precipitation, and sunrise/sunset times

Perks: Things start heating up in May, so it’s a nice time of year for those of you who love the heat.

I know the graphic above shows lows in the 60s and highs around 85, but those are based on 30-year averages.

The temps are usually higher, with mornings in the 70s and the hottest part of the day in the 90s. It’s hot during May, but still bearable.

Drawbacks: With rising humidity levels, this is the time of year when you need to start being mindful about staying hydrated.

You might need to pack extra clothes so you can change each night before dinner. (Walking around in the heat all day makes for sweaty tourists!)

What’s Blooming in Savannah in May: May is Confederate jasmine and Southern magnolias month, which means the city smells heavenly!

Errr…or as nice as Savannah can smell.

The blooms help mask the ever-present scent of weed, trash, and the nearby paper mill that waft through many parts of downtown.

You’ll also find the beautiful purple blooms of agapanthus in many of the squares during the month of May.

The Southern live oaks are green during May, and the ever-present Spanish moss can be found in the trees year-round.

Savannah Weather in June

Average Low: 71°F Average High: 90°F Typical Number of Rainy Days: 10.9 days | 5.95 inches

Pinnable graphic showing Savannah weather in June with average highs/lows, precipitation, and sunrise/sunset times

Perks: I mean…June is nice if you love the heat, but otherwise I have a hard time finding perks.

The early morning hours aren’t bad.

Drawbacks: Savannah is located in a subtropical zone, which means it’s hot and afternoon thunderstorms are common.

The storms are typically short, but you can count on them to occur pretty consistently around 2 or 3 pm daily throughout the summer season.

June 1st is technically the start of the Atlantic hurricane season, but it’s rare to have one hit that early (not unheard of, but rare).

What’s Blooming in Savannah in June: Hydrangeas, hibiscus, agapanthus, mimosa trees, and crepe myrtles. Some magnolias still have blooms, as well.

The Southern live oaks are green, and if you haven’t guessed by now, the Spanish moss always on the trees!

You’ll see lots of resurrection fern on the trees during the summertime due to copious amounts of rainfall.

Savannah Weather in July

Average Low : 74°F Average High: 92°F Typical Number of Rainy Days: 11.3 days | 5.60 inches

Pinnable graphic showing Savannah weather in July with average highs/lows, precipitation, and sunrise/sunset times

Perks: The plus side is that Savannah during July a great place to be if you love hot and humid weather.

I don’t, so I leave Savannah every summer around this time. (I can’t take the heat, so I get out of the kitchen!)

Drawbacks: July is the hottest average month of them all.

You can count on afternoon thunderstorms almost daily, and sometimes we’ll get two to three days of downpours at a time.

The city has terrible drainage issues, so streets often flood in a major way (I’m talking rivers with trash cans floating down the street and cars sitting in water to the top of their tires.)

Be careful where you park!

If you’re staying in a home rental be sure to ask the homeowner if the area is prone to flooding. You might need to move your car to higher ground if a significant amount of rain is in the forecast.

What’s Blooming: Crepe myrtles, mimosa trees and hydrangeas.

The Southern live oaks are green in the summertime, and the Spanish moss is always dangling from their limbs. There’s a high probability of spotting resurrection fern due to all the rain.

Savannah Weather in August

Average Low: 73°F Average High: 91°F Typical Number of Rainy Days: 12.8 days | 6.56 inches

Pinnable graphic showing Savannah weather in August with average highs/lows, precipitation, and sunrise/sunset times

Perks: The city looks pretty in the rain, and it’s fun to jump in puddles. Otherwise, I struggle finding the good in August.

Not everyone is as averse to the heat as I am, so hopefully you’ll find something to love if August is the only time you can plan a trip!

Drawbacks: Savannah is located in a subtropical zone, so expect high humidity and afternoon storms.

Sometimes it rains heavily for a few days in a row.

When I say it’s hot during the summertime, I’m not exaggerating!

The air barely moves in Savannah during the summer months, and the humidity can get so high that sweat can’t evaporate to cool your body.

TIP: Always check the “feels like” temps for the day before heading out!

Hurricane season starts ramping up towards the end of the month, so evacuations are a possibility.

I suggest purchasing travel insurance as a backup during the months of August, September, and October.

What’s Blooming: Crepe myrtles and hydrangeas.

The Southern live oaks are green and the Spanish moss is always hanging around in the trees.

Savannah Weather in September

Average Low: 69°F Average High: 86°F Typical Number of Rainy Days: 9.3 days | 4.58 inches

Pinnable graphic showing Savannah weather in September with average highs/lows, precipitation, and sunrise/sunset times

Perks: The mornings and evenings cool down a wee little bit in September, so that’s nice.

Drawbacks: If you think summer ends in August, think again!

Summer stretches well into October in Savannah.

September temperatures are commonly in the 90s for most of the day and into the early evening hours.

It’s also a peak month for hurricanes.

In 2016, Hurricane Matthew — a Category 5 storm — caused mandatory evacuations of the city in late September/early October.

In 2019, Hurricane Dorian — also a Category 5 storm — caused another state of emergency during the month of September.

I strongly suggest purchasing travel insurance for September.

What’s Blooming in Savannah in September: The Southern live oaks are green throughout September, and you’ll find Spanish moss in hanging in the trees.

It’s common to spot resurrection fern in the days following a fresh rainfall.

Savannah Weather in October

Average Low: 59°F Average High: 79°F Typical Number of Rainy Days: 6.8 days | 3.69 inches

Pinnable graphic showing Savannah weather in October with average highs/lows, precipitation, and sunrise/sunset times

Perks: By the time October rolls around, the afternoons are still warm (the 80s are common), but it’s pleasantly mild in the morning and at night.

October is fairly dry with low humidity levels.

Drawbacks: Hurricane season technically doesn’t end until November, but it winds down in late October.

However, the beginning of the month still sees a strong possibility of heavy storms.

Hurricane Michael hit the first week in October of 2016, and it was a Category 5 storm.

Hurricane Matthew arrived the second week in October of 2018, and it was also a Category 5 storm.

I suggest purchasing travel insurance if you’re traveling to Savannah in October.

What’s Blooming in Savannah in October: The Southern live oaks are green throughout October, and you’ll find Spanish moss in hanging in the trees.

Make note that the trees don’t start displaying fall color in Savannah until late November and into December.

Savannah Weather in November

Average Low: 48°F Average High: 70°F Typical Number of Rainy Days: 6.9 days | 2.37 inches

Pinnable graphic showing Savannah weather in November with average highs/lows, precipitation, and sunrise/sunset times

Perks: November sees the return of chamber of commerce weather, with cooler mornings, pleasantly mild afternoons, and comfortable evenings.

It’s a sunny month with very little humidity.

Rain is rare during November.

Drawbacks: I can’t think of any.

What’s Blooming in Savannah in November: The Southern live oaks remain green throughout the month of October, and you’ll find Spanish moss in hanging in the trees year-round.

Some of the trees begin showing fall color this month and the Japanese maples often turn orange or red.

Savannah Weather in December

Average Low: 43°F Average High: 64°F Typical Number of Rainy Days: 8.2 days | 2.95 inches

Pinnable graphic showing Savannah weather in December with average highs/lows, precipitation, and sunrise/sunset times

Perks: The weather during December is often ideal for strolling through the Historic District to see Savannah’s beautiful Christmas decor .

Rainfall chances are few and far between.

Drawbacks: Some days are chillier than others, but overall December is rather mild.

Occasionally a rare cold front moves through and drops the temperatures for a few days.

Make note that it does tend to get chilly along River Street due to its lower elevation and the breeze blowing in off the water.

What’s Blooming: The Southern live oaks are green throughout December, and you’ll find Spanish moss swaying in the trees year-round.

Many of the trees in beautiful Forsyth Park turn yellow during the November/December timeframe, so it’s a nice time to stroll through the park.

Cathedral Basilica of St. John the Baptist Cathedral Basilica of St. John the Baptist free

Towering over Lafayette Square in the Historic District, the Cathedral Basilica of St. John the Baptist's Gothic towers should lure in any architecture buff. The original cathedral was established in 1799 by the first French colonists to arrive in the area. The brick structure you see today is not the original (since its founding, the church moved locations and was partially rebuilt following a fire in 1898), but the cathedral still impresses visitors with its imposing spires, Italian marble altar and stunning stained-glass windows. What's more, a Catholic cathedral of this size is a bit of a rarity in the South, where Catholicism is not the dominant religion.

Most travelers who took the time to see this cathedral were flabbergasted by its beauty, comparing it to Europe's medieval churches. Even if you're not interested in attending Mass, you should still set aside 10 to 15 minutes to take a brief peek inside the stunning interior. However, recent visitors said attending Mass here is worth considering (even if you're not Catholic), thanks to the beautiful atmosphere and talented choir. Feel free to take a self-guided tour inside the cathedral, but remember to be respectful as it's still an active house of worship.

Bonaventure Cemetery Bonaventure Cemetery free

While a stroll through a cemetery may sound a little morbid, a visit to the more than 100-acre Bonaventure Cemetery is a must for lovers of the written word. Originally called the Evergreen Cemetery (and occupying land previously used for a plantation), the Victorian-style cemetery was purchased by the city of Savannah in 1907 and redesigned to its current size. Keep your eyes peeled for the tombstones of such celebrities as poet Conrad Aiken and lyricist Johnny Mercer. You should also make a point of looking for the grave of Danny Hansford (buried in the neighboring Greenwich Cemetery), whose murder inspired John Berendt's best-selling book, "Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil."

According to many visitors, the hauntingly beautiful Bonaventure won't disappoint, but travelers said that bug spray, a water bottle and comfortable walking shoes are a must. You can tour the cemetery on your own, but recent visitors said you should also consider signing up for a guided tour to gain a better understanding of the cemetery's intriguing history.

U.S. News Insider Tip: A couple feet away is Chippewa Square – the backdrop for the "Forrest Gump" scene where Tom Hanks sits on a bench to narrate the character's life story. If you are looking for the bench, visit the Savannah History Museum to see a replica. – Tanvi Chauhan, Contributor, Travel

Constructed in 1840 in the Greek Revival style, this Mediterranean villa was owned by a shipping merchant named Francis Sorrel and then became the boyhood home to Brig. Gen. Moxley Sorrel, who fought in the Civil War. But that's not why the house is so famous. In addition to appearing in the opening scenes of "Forrest Gump," the house has also been featured in an episode of HGTV's "Ghost Adventures." In fact, it's often referred to as one of the most haunted buildings in Savannah and is a frequent stop on some of the best Savannah ghost tours . It's believed that Francis Sorrel's second wife died by suicide at the house, along with one of his enslaved workers. Visitors to the house can choose between a history and architecture tour, a historic walking tour, a ghost tour or a "paranormal investigation."

Owens-Thomas House & Slave Quarters Owens-Thomas House & Slave Quarters

George Welshman Owens was a wealthy planter, lawyer and politician who lived in this house with his wife, six children and up to 14 enslaved people beginning in 1833. The last Owens descendant to live in the house was George Owens' granddaughter, Margaret Gray Thomas, who left the property to the Telfair Academy of Arts and Science in her will in 1875. Unlike the other two Telfair Museums – the Jepson Center and Telfair Academy – the Owens-Thomas House & Slave Quarters focuses less on art and more on the Owens' family furnishings and history of the earliest intact urban slave quarters in the South.

A tour of the facility reveals what life was like for the upper class in 19th-century Savannah: You'll see Greek-inspired craftsmanship and beautiful stained glass, in addition to the old carriage house and slave quarters. You'll also have a chance to peruse the common spaces, such as the drawing room and the dining room, where the family entertained guests, and can learn more about the day-to-day life of the family's enslaved workers through interactive exhibits in the butler's pantry, the working cellar and the slave quarters.

Tour Fort Pulaski National Monument Tour Fort Pulaski National Monument

Named for Revolutionary War hero Casimir Pulaski, this 19th-century fort was originally constructed to defend Savannah from coastal attacks. Notably, it was here that Gen. Robert E. Lee was first assigned after graduating from West Point. During the Civil War, it was occupied by Confederate troops until being surrendered to Union forces in 1862.

Fort Pulaski was also a safe haven for enslaved people as part of the Underground Railroad. Union Maj. Gen. David Hunter issued an order in April 1862 stating: "All persons of color lately held in involuntary service by enemies of the United States in Fort Pulaski and on Cockspur Island, Georgia are hereby confiscated and declared free." As such, many enslaved people came to Fort Pulaski and once on the island, began a free life on the Georgia coast. Meanwhile, others joined to form one of the first colored troops divisions in the Civil War. Hundreds of enslaved people were granted freedom as a result of Hunter's order.

Wormsloe State Historic Site Wormsloe State Historic Site

Right up there with  Forsyth Park  and  River Street , Wormsloe State Historic Site is one of Savannah's top attractions. Even if you never heard of the site, you've likely seen it in pictures: its star attraction is the mile-long avenue leading to the former plantation, which is lined on both sides by towering live oak trees dressed in Spanish moss.

Most travelers venture here for the free photo-op alone, but what lies beyond the entryway is also worth your attention. Here you'll find the ruins of Wormsloe, the oldest standing structure in Savannah and the Colonial estate of Noble Jones, a carpenter who came to Georgia in 1733 with James Oglethorpe and the first group of settlers from England. In the 1750s, Jones used a group of enslaved people to maintain the property, plant crops like cotton, grains and vegetables, and keep Wormsloe profitable. Along with the ruins, visitors can tour a small museum featuring artifacts unearthed at Wormsloe and watch a brief film about the site and Georgia's founding. There's also a 7-mile-long interpretative nature trail that runs along a marsh on the Skidaway River, as well as costumed interpreters demonstrating the tools and skills of Colonial Georgia.

First African Baptist Church First African Baptist Church

A National Historic Landmark, the First African Baptist Church was first organized in 1773 by the Rev. George Liele and is the oldest continuous Black church in North America. The reverend, who was born into slavery but later granted freedom by the British for his loyalty, became the church's pastor in 1775 and the church was officially established as a body of organized believers in 1777. After the British lost the Revolutionary War, rather than chance re-enslavement in the South, Liele fled to Jamaica . Before leaving for Jamaica, he ordained Andrew Bryan (one of the congregation's original members) to be the second pastor of the church until 1812 when his nephew Andrew Marshall took over. Under Marshall's leadership, the church acquired the property where it currently stands in downtown Savannah.

The church still features many historical elements, including stained-glass windows and the original light fixtures, balcony pews and baptismal pool. Today, visitors can attend a service or take a tour to admire its beauty. Previous travelers highly recommend stopping here to learn about its history and importance as a safe haven along the Underground Railroad.

Mercer Williams House Museum Mercer Williams House Museum

A stop at the Mercer-Williams House is a must when in Savannah. While it was commissioned by Gen. Hugh W. Mercer (great-grandfather of lyricist Johnny Mercer), this house is much more famous for what happened here when it was owned by Jim Williams. Williams was a noted Savannah antiques dealer and the central character in John Berendt's best-selling book "Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil," which detailed the shooting that took place in the house in 1981. While the upstairs is off-limits, you're invited to explore the ground floor, which is ornately decorated with 18th- and 19th-century furnishings, Chinese porcelain and portraits dating back to the 1700s.

Though most recent visitors were pleased with their tour of the Mercer-Williams House and highly recommended it if you are a fan of the book, they did warn that no photography was allowed in the garden or the house. Also, keep in mind that since members of the family still occupy the residence, only the ground floor is accessible to visitors.

If you're a fan of art forms from the 19th and 20th centuries (or if you just need a break from the Georgia heat), you'll want to spend a few hours perusing this mansion-turned-museum, which was originally built in 1819 for Alexander Telfair. Housing four primary art forms – paintings, architecture, sculpture, and printmaking, including paintings from the Impressionist period, plaster casts of such renowned works as the Venus de Milo and period furniture left over from the Telfair family themselves, this marble-clad museum – the first public art museum in the South – shelters a diverse array of pieces. But the real highlight of the museum is Sylvia Shaw Judson's famous Bird Girl statue, which appears on the cover of John Berendt's bestselling book, "Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil."

Most recent visitors were charmed by the Telfair Academy, with many citing it as a "must-see" while in Savannah, specifically because of the renowned Bird Girl statue. What's more, many appreciated that admission to Telfair Academy also covers entrance to each of the other Telfair sites, including the Jepson Center and the Owens-Thomas House & Slave Quarters . Many travelers loved the ability to see all three sites for one, discounted ticket price.
