What to Wear When Traveling In Your Sixties

Remember, this article talks mainly about what to wear while traveling… not necessarily what to wear once you reach your destination. However, you can certainly apply some of the tips we have included here, as they are handy and even universal. Here are some hard and fast rules to get you started:

• Incorporate pieces into your travel outfit that you will also wear after reaching your destination. This is a brilliant way to conserve space in your bags, especially if you are trying to travel light. Examples of pieces you can wear en route versus packing would be a scarf, a pair of earrings, a blazer, a hair accessory, or a pair of comfy shoes.
• Never wear brand-new shoes on a trip , as they will be less comfortable and may hurt your feet, which could definitely affect how enjoyable your trip is. Break them in first.
• Dress for comfort, but avoid common comfort pieces such as elastic band pants (these don’t flatter anyone), shapeless dresses, oversized tee-shirts, sweaters with embroidery or appliques, and unstructured suits.
• Consider a capsule wardrobe for traveling . If you don’t know how to build one, there are several videos on YouTube, as well as articles online, that you can learn from. A capsule wardrobe makes traveling light easy and building outfits a lot simpler as well.
• Try a monochromatic look . This can be a really simple way to put together an outfit that is stylish without investing too much time in coordinating various pieces of different colors. Our only caution is to not wear head-to-toe denim. That is one monochromatic look we do not advise! You should also choose a color that suits your overall complexion.

In our last post we talked about Fashion Tips For 60 Plus Women , and today we’ll be focusing on travel outfits. When packing light, one good jacket is a must. We recommend having yours tailored and choosing one in a neutral shade (black, white, navy, or beige) to ensure it goes with the rest of your outfits. Three-quarter length sleeves are also advisable: they give less of an “office” feel to your jacket and keeps the look fresh and sophisticated.

The outfit pictured below is a lovely option for the traveling lady: black straight-leg pants that fall right below the ankle are not only comfortable to wear but they are versatile and can be worn with many other outfits throughout your trip.

Traveling whilst wearing too many pieces of jewelry can be more of a hassle than what it’s worth. If you are going through airport security, you may have to remove all of it which can be time-consuming and inconvenient. Our solution is to pick a few statement pieces and go for a minimalistic look.

Here we see a chunky chain necklace paired with stud earrings and a couple of bracelets. They would take only a minute or two to remove and they help elevate the overall look as well. A crossbody bag is also an accessory we love.

Do you have a favorite actress or celebrity that embodies a style you admire? Think of Helen Mirren, Meryl Streep, Anna deWintour, or Michelle Pfeiffer. Hi Jannie, are you looking for shoe recommendations or travel tips? During my travels I usually wear sneakers (my favorite brands to shop for comfortable sneakers are Reebok and Skechers). But on days when I’m dressed up and would want pictures in heels, I carry my heels with me in my bag. I wear them for the pictures and then go back to my sneakers lol. I know it can sound difficult but it’s actually really convenient and you get some magical pics. Of course you need to look for lightweight heels that you would be comfortable carrying around. When it comes to travel clothes, it feels like you have to make a choice: comfortable (but looks like you’re setting out on an expedition) or stylish (but uncomfortable for long flights or walking).

My Travel Capsule Wardrobe: Best Wrinkle Free Travel Clothes for Women

I have this thing. If I have really nice clothing – like, favourite stylish travel clothes, I tend not to wear them as often as I’d like to. Instead, I still wear wrinkle-free travel clothes – but cheaper, older, less comfortable, or less stylish clothes and I justify keeping my favourites in the (proverbial) closet (which for me is actually my luggage ), so I can save them for a more “special” occasion.

I saw Loretta LaRoche speak at a conference. She grew up being told by her mother that she could only wear her nice underwear on special occasions. Thing is, there was never an occasion special enough to put on these “party pants”. She also poked fun at people who have sitting rooms they never sit in, with nice furniture covered in protective plastic. Her theory was that we could all love life a lot more if we enjoyed the things we have rather than perpetually saving them for another day….a day that may never come.

I’m here to say it’s time to wear our party pants.

My Journey With Anatomie Travel Clothing

The birth of the Anatomie capsule wardrobe idea

I visited Anatomie Travel Clothing’s headquarters in Miami. I’d been a fan of Anatomie for years already; they sent me my first outfit in 2012 – an outfit that is still going strong, all these years (and abuse) later. (See also: Anatomie – My New Favourite Travel Clothing )

Shawn and Kate (Anatomie’s co-founders) talked about cost-per-wear. While doing some math, I realized that their prices (a stumbling block for me) weren’t as high as I’d initially thought if I worked out how many miles I could get out of them – literally and figuratively. So, I threw out my jeans .

I returned to Anatomie’s headquarters a second time with a furrowed brow. My favourite travel pants – the Kate Skinny Cargo pants, which I got just a couple of years prior – had worn in the strangest of ways. It led to concerns about the quality of their travel clothes on the whole. My original capris were doing great! Why had the Kate pants deteriorated like this in a fraction of the time?

Anatomie was churning out a huge number of new styles at the time, becoming a highly-recognized brand name in the luxury market as the ultimate travel clothes for women. Had they grown too big for their own good?

Luckily, my concerns were assuaged when I received a brand new pair of Kate pants and was assured that any customer with a similar problem would be afforded the same treatment. They said that occasionally material from the end of a roll could do funny things like this, and while they hadn’t seen this particular problem before, they would look out for it in the future.

While Anatomie may be growing exponentially, they still pride themselves on superior service and developing long-term relationships with their customers, as evidenced by the expedient replacement of my defective pants, their personal style concierge service, and more.

Not only did they replace my Kate pants, but they loaded me up with a whole bunch of new styles and Anatomie “ Travel Essential ” pieces. (Travel Essentials are styles they carry year after year because they’re so popular, and customers get angry if Anatomie stops making them.)

With this gift of new clothes, they issued me a challenge: pack and wear only Anatomie clothes for my next trip. So, I did; the next opportunity I had to leave my big suitcase I armed myself for three weeks with two wee packing cubes of Anatomie clothes.

Here’s what I learned about what makes for the best wrinkle free travel clothes for women. (See the end of this post for an exact list of what I traveled with, so you can design your own ideal travel capsule wardrobe).

Quality travel clothing will go the distance – literally and figuratively.

My Cargo Capris (since discontinued, though keep an eye on the Anatomie website – they occasionally revive them for a season) are still going strong since getting them in 2012. This is one style that I haven’t saved for special occasions; over the years, I’ve worn these pants more than any other pair of pants I’ve owned. Like, ever. After all these years of abuse, the material is softer and even comfier.

I’ve washed them in dodgy washing machines around the world, and they’ve even seen a few dryers (which you’re not supposed to do, FYI). The only thing I can say is that the material has thinned out a little (but not so much as to be a problem), and has also stretched out a little (due to my own weight gain/loss/gain/loss/etc. over the years).

Regarding fit in general, Anatomie advises that you can expect that the signature stretch wrinkle-free material used for their pants will stretch over time (it’s what makes Anatomie pants a custom fit, as it stretches to hug your curves perfectly). More on this later.

Washing and Drying

If you’re traveling with a limited (capsule) wardrobe, washing and drying must be easy.

Need to dry your pants in a hurry? A simple hairdryer will do the trick in just a few mins! (Almost) everything Anatomie offers is machine washable in cold water.

Machine dryers, in general, are horrible on your clothes (they exponentially accelerate deterioration), nor are they particularly environmentally friendly. Luckily most Anatomie styles dry quickly, usually overnight.

Wrinkle Free Packing

Packing light means not having a lot of space. Irons are not an option.

Are you worried about cramming those expensive duds into a packing cube ? Don’t. Anatomie makes easy care travel clothes, and although some pieces may come out of your luggage looking wrinkled, the wrinkles easily fall out as soon as you put them on. You will love their wrinkle resistant fabrics, life-changing!

Other styles made of crazy comfy jersey and mesh (here are their current lightweight jackets and wide variety of shirts ) are truly wrinkle free in all respects. Scrunch it up in a ball in your bag. I dare ya.

Comfort Vs. Style

There’s nothing worse than being uncomfortable. Except perhaps, being underdressed.

Luckily there’s no compromise! I’m just as comfy in my Luisa skinny jeans  on a plane as I am in a pair of leggings. Except, I’m wearing something considerably more stylish than leggings. 

Even the Andrea Contrast Panel leggings are more-than-leggings.

For me, the perfect travel wardrobe has stylish travel clothes, without being pretentious. Regardless of whether you’re dressed up or down, you’re comfortable. Travel throws you enough curveballs; you’d better be comfy in your second skin.

On the topic of comfort, their Pima Cotton Tank Tops  are made from Pima cotton, from Peru. I was ambivalent when they suggested I try it out ( it’s a plain tank top….kinda boring right? ), but it quickly became my absolute favourite top to wear. It’s suuuuuuuper soft, breathable, won’t shrink, goes with everything, and just like most of Anatomie’s styles, can be machine washed (on cold), and will dry fast.

Staying Warm

Cool/cold weather is the biggest challenge to packing light. The secret is in layering.

Most of Anatomie’s travel clothing styles are very lightweight – which is both a selling point and a challenge. The signature stretch fabric used to make most of their pants is light as a feather, which means it won’t weigh you down as you take off, but if you’re taking off to chilly places, you might be cold.

Over the years, I’ve found ways to circumvent these challenges:

Layer Under. While most of Anatomie’s travel pants are slim-fitting, there’s still room for a pair of leggings underneath for added warmth.

Layer Over. This is where Anatomie’s travel jackets shine. While one of their mesh jackets is ridiculously comfortable over a tank top and takes the edge off a summer night, it’s also warmer than it looks and can be worn over a long-sleeved top (which also shows through the mesh, and looks very nice).

The same goes for the Kenya Safari Jacket , which is hands-down their most popular travel jacket , and for good reason. It’s roomy enough to go over thicker under-layers, yet form-fitting enough to be super stylish and flattering.

If you find yourself in even chillier climes, they have a selection of quilted, cashmere, and even leather styles. I still have a style of an Anatomie travel jacket (which they don’t carry anymore) that is ideal for shoulder season climates.

2024 UPDATE: I spent a whole winter in a snowy mountain town, with the help of Anatomie’s new Cozy Essentials lineup ! Their fleece-lined signature styles (like the Kenya Jacket and Skyler Pants) are literally the comfiest clothes I own – super stretchy and soft. And lucky for me, they’re also the most stylish clothes I own. Best of all worlds!

Free Returns and Clothing Guarantees

Spending a lot of money on the perfect travel capsule wardrobe? Free returns are critical.

I’m still leery of ordering clothes online. Even with sizing charts, you just never know how something will fit.

Anatomie understands this, and orders placed in the U.S. include free returns . And rumour has it they’re going to offer free returns to Canadian customers very soon too!

So if you’re curious about how that shirt or pair of pants will fit, there’s no risk in ordering it and finding out first-hand.

The same goes for clothing defects. While normal wear and tear are on your own dime, if there’s a problem with an Anatomie style, they’ll send you a new pair, as I experienced myself. Anatomie wants you to be 100% happy with your clothes, as they’ve demonstrated to me repeatedly.

Travel Clothing for Women with Curves

Most people aren’t models. So how do we know if those pants will actually fit AND look good?

Over the years, I’ve grown, and not just emotionally! While I’m not disproportionate or overweight, my measurements baffle many sizing charts.

While trying to order pants and a shirt from (another) online clothing company, I couldn’t figure out which sizes to get. According to their sizing charts, I was somewhere between a Small and Medium for the shirt (but my bust measurement said I should be Large – and believe me, my boobs aren’t that spectacular). 

When it came to my lower half, my self-esteem “bottomed” out. While I was accustomed to being a size 6-8, my recent weight gain put me in the (8-10) category. This particular clothing company’s size 12 looked like it would still be too small. And….size 12 was their largest size. Who does that?!?! I have no idea what other curvy women would do if they tried to order anything from this company. (To their credit, my complaints inspired them to change their sizing charts, which is why they shall remain nameless in this post.) I simply share this story here as an example of how screwed up sizing is across the board, especially when it comes to women’s pants.

Shawn (Anatomie’s co-founder and chief designer) stood by while I tried on a huge variety of clothes, and he told me how they’re supposed to fit and made specific sizing recommendations.

Even though I wanted to err on the side of caution with larger sizes, Shawn warned me that most of Anatomie’s pants stretch up to a whole size over time ; and my older Anatomie pants are testament to this. So, if your own Anatomie travel pants are a bit tight to begin with, never fear: their signature stretch fabric is a bit of a miracle-worker and will mold to your curves perfectly with time.

Here are some observations about how Anatomie’s stylish travel clothes are made for curvy women :

• The Suzette Skort  has built-in jersey bicycle shorts. While this does add a bit to the packing weight and bulk, my thighs thanked me; can you say “ no thigh rub?? ” (Not a fan of the short skirt? I get it. Here are their current dresses , which include some super classy styles. I own their Marine Travel Dress , which is super flattering for all figures and made of a material that can literally be balled up and stuffed into a corner of my luggage and come out ready for the runway).
• I asked Shawn which styles of Anatomie’s travel pants are best for the curvy woman; he said the Kate Pant  (which I can attest to). More recently, Anatomie has come out with a whole line of pants for curvy women! You can now shop their entire site by body type , which is very useful. 
• Not all women appreciate tight shirts. While I do recommend having at least one somewhat form-fitting tank top and long-sleeved top for layering underneath jackets and such, I also like having a “let it all hang out” sort of top. Anatomie has a selection of looser-fitting tops that will turn heads; just have a browse through the store to see their latest designs, as their styles are always changing.

Anatomie Wrinkle Resistant Clothing Recommendations

Here is what I packed when I took the challenge to travel with only Anatomie clothing. Note: many of the exact items I took with me have been discontinued. I’ve switched them out here with new items (that I own) which are comparable replacements. Depending on the climate at your destination, you might want to adjust this selection. For example when visiting a hot climate you’ll want to switch out a jacket or long-sleeved shirt for another tank/tee. This travel capsule wardrobe is ideal for warm temperate weather.

Bailey Mesh Jacket (it won’t wrinkle, no matter how hard you try!)

Kenya Safari Jacket (stylish, can be worn with sleeves rolled up or down, zipped up to the neck, etc)

Calista Rollup Henley Top (pima cotton, long-sleeved), AND/OR

Alida button-down Poplin Shirt (I love this dressy shirt because the front panel is a structured material, and the arms and back are soft stretchy jersey)

Jackson Pima Cotton Tank (a staple for any travel wardrobe, perfect on its own and for layering)

Noted for my wife Nora. I dig the party pants analogy. Good to know of the wrinkle free aspect too; sometimes we travel outside of the tropics. Humidity in places takes care of wrinkles fast but outside of the tropics you need quality, wrinkle-free clothes. Or an iron and board which ain’t happening around much of the world.

That is, unless you practice “extreme ironing”….in which case…..bring on the ironing board! LOL

This is a great post, with the exception of all the body shaming. What’s up with the “real” woman stuff? Is a model a “fake” woman? You’re a great writer, and I know there’s a better way you can get your point across without making some women feel like they don’t qualify as “real” women.

While curvy women seem to get the short end of the stick when it comes to body image issues and persecution on a variety of levels, you are right in that I haven’t acknowledged skinny women as being “real”. I’ve removed all language that isolates any body type as being “real” or otherwise.

Nora, I was ready to like this company you love in spite of the big price tags. Just thought you should be aware how an ordinary customer is treated. I found this in the reviews from the Skyler Skinny Pant. I’m afraid that you get special treatment from the company. If they really backed up their products for defects it might be worth it. But 10% discount is nothing to compensate this woman for a messed up zipper on a very expensive pair of pants.

hannah poor policy I have purchased a pair of Anatomie pants and was very satisfied with the product, until I had the inner seam of the zipper seperate from the fabric so they are no longer wearable. I have worn the pants no more than 10 times, but being outside of the 30 days they would not help me. Since this was obviously a quality issue I feel like this says something about the company as a whole. Anatomie >> replied: Hannah, thank you for contacting us; we apologize for the inconvenience. We looked into the matter and since the pants were purchased about a year ago, and that particular style is no longer in production, we will not be able to issue a replacement. I wonder if perhaps she bought the last of a line that was being discontinued and was thus on clearance sale. Anything on super clearance wouldn’t likely be subject to the same return/exchange policy.

Nora, since I wrote the above post, I have given Anatomie a try. Customer service has been wonderful, namely Raquel. It’s very difficult to get the style and size right on first try and she’s shown some flexibility. I tried the popular Skyler pants and am lukewarm about the fit. I’m going to give your Luisa Skinny Jeans a try! (Did you by any chance try the Lora Nylon & Fleece jacket? Seems to be one of their Italian items.)

I keep asking for someone to post a blog for clothes for women over 60. Everything I see is for twenty year old. Travelled to over 65 countries. Now in my seventies cannot wear the ridiculous clothes and shoes., no one writes for older women. Pity.

Hi Sue, I’m sorry you feel under-represented and under-served by myself and other sites. I would have thought that at least some of the styles offered by Anatomie are ageless. Many are conservative, and most are classy – especially the jackets and tops.

It seems you are raving about quite a few garments no longer made. Perhaps you should update and let us know how the replacement garments actually pack and hold up.

Lastly, cost-per-wear is simply semantics for overcharging. Much can be done with less expensive clothing. You just gotta throw on a pashmina or a bright scarf over inexpensive tops and slacks/skirts.

This is not to say expensive travel clothing doesn’t have its place. I definitely have some expensive regular clothing, since I show dogs. (Take a look at the womens’ suits worn on the Westminster telecast, including St. John’s.) But I’m buying less expensive travel clothing so I may spend my money in Florence. 😎

Hi Jennifer, I think the very fact that I’m still wearing styles I got 10 years ago (that have since been discontinued) it testament to how long Anatomie clothing lasts! I haven’t had to replace them. New designs by Anatomie (and they’re constantly updating their lineup as many fashion brands do) continue to use their signature stretch material and other travel-friendly materials. So it’s safe to assume their new styles pack and hold up just as well as all the garments I’ve gotten over the last 10 years.

As for cost-per-wear and choice of travel clothing, all that boils down to your budget and your priorities. Spending less money on clothes so you can spend more money in Florence is a perfectly justifiable decision!

As a former national sewing instructor and alterations expert, I have to respectfully disagree. Cost-per-wear is a valid calulation, but one easily forgotten in these days of disposable clothing. (I’m not talking about overpaying for a logo, but buying true quality.) Compare a dense wool winter coat or jacket with proper interfacing, interlining, thermal lining, appropriate stitching with durable high-quality thread and natural horn buttons V. a trendy coat from a big box or mall store made from a cheap blend that beads up, little if any interfacing, thin rayon lining, long stitches of flimsy poly thread and plastic buttons that doesn’t combat the cold or breathe like a natural fiber. Real quality means buy it once, take care of it, wear it for years. Or… buy cheap where only pennies of the price are spent on overseas labor and oil-based, polluting materials while the rest is spent on polluting transportation and trendy marketing, just to result in pilling within a wash or two, and sweat and stink that clings to the cheap fabric, then toss it in a landfill where it sits unchanged for generations or crate it on a pallet and ship it yet again to a poor country where starving children pick for rags. A quick google will provide a thorough and absolutely shocking education on how cheap fashion has degraded people, industry and our environment — all for a $10 pair of sweat pants that won’t last a season. If people focused their closets (and suitcases) on a classic, high-quality, long-lasting classic capsule wardrobe and supplemented with very few, cheap trendy pieces, they’d be much more comfortable, cause a lot less damage… and spend a LOT less in the long run. So the next time you compare prices, think about what went into producing the garment, the quality of the materials and construction, how long it will last, how it will hold up over time – and do that cost per wear.

Very well said and something not enough people think about. Unfortunately people on a low income (such as myself) can’t often afford to spend a lot on clothes. I am a larger women, so my choices of where to shop are limited. I wear my clothes until they wear out and hardly ever buy new clothes. I don’t have the money and find it hard to find something that suits.

This was amazing. I always seem to have the most trouble with my clothes wrinkling. I am very excited to try out your advice and see how they stand up against my clothes.

The best lightweight, easy-care women’s travel dresses

As an over 60 woman, I plan my travel wardrobe around classic, easy-care items. I take inspiration from the French style of dressing, focusing on solid colors and a classic look in high quality pieces. I accent these with colorful scarves, jackets, and jewelry. A dress fits perfectly into this capsule. Designing your travel style around a simple dress is a great way to pack light and look great! I’ve tested some of the best women’s travel dresses and present my favorites here.

Why pack a dress for travel?

I’m not your typical dress person. At home you’re more likely to find me in a great pair of jeans or workout wear. But when I’m planning a trip, I want to be ready for anything – museum visits, evenings out, and lots of walking. For me, one of the best options is a travel dress! On cruises, a dress is always on the list. (We don’t book anything that requires formal wear. It’s just not our thing.) On an active adventure where you’re in hiking or cycling clothes by day, it’s nice to have an option for something soft and pretty at night. And in a stretch, a dress can be worn as nightwear! That’s where dresses for travel come in!

As a woman over 60, I began traveling IN the sixties. My Dad wore three piece suits, and my mom and I wore dresses. Does that make me a travel dress expert?? No, but it does give me an appreciation for the functionality of dresses.

What makes a great travel dress?

Any piece that makes its way into our bag has to earn its place. Dresses are no exception. Here are our criteria for the perfect travel dress:

1. Packability – lightweight, wrinkle resistant

2. Versatility – I don’t pack anything that I can’t wear more than once. Clothing that has more than one good option is the best way to pack light. Choose a casual dress that can go from daytime touring to evenings out with an accessory or two. A dress that’s convertible gets extra points!

3. Low Maintenance/Ease of Care – who has time for doing laundry on vacation? A sink wash and air dry are usually the most we do on vacation.

4. Sustainable Quality – don’t be fooled by fast fashion. Invest in well made, classic items from ethical companies. Not only is this best for the planet, but it’ll save you money in the long run.

5. Comfort and Pleasure – (Probably the most important yet often forgotten criteria) Do I like how I feel in this dress? Does it work for my body type? Does it fit my personal style? Do I enjoy wearing it?

Choose your color, a dress style you like, and fabric that travels well

Color . The foundation of the French woman’s style is the little black dress. This staple piece is simple yet classy and never goes out of fashion. When creating a French-inspired travel wardrobe , I start with a solid color dress – the base palette – and add color and patterns with other pieces and accessories. Parisian women may favor black as their base, but you should choose what’s best for you, and your skin tone. Navy blue, wine, or dark gray can be more flattering to women over 60. They certainly are for me.

Style . Your choice will depend on your signature style and your destination. Sleeveless styles are great for hot climates, and will work just as well in cold weather when you add layers! But some ladies prefer long sleeves. And some love maxi dresses! (though maxis will take up more luggage space!) Go with what makes you comfortable and what flatters your best features.

Fabric . To earn its place in your bag the dress (and every item really!) has to be lightweight and easy to care for. This is where the fabric choice comes in. For example:

• Cotton is heavy, retains odors, and takes forever to dry.
• Linen is wonderful, but wrinkles can be frustrating.
• Synthetics are very lightweight, but can retain odors.

For ease of care and sustainability we recommend choosing natural fibers such as bamboo, Tencel, and wool for your travel clothing.

Bamboo is quickly becoming a popular material for travel clothing. It’s sustainable and odor resistant.

Merino wool has a natural warmth and resiliency not found in other textiles. Merino sheep, bred originally in Spain, have ultrafine wool which doesn’t provoke the itchy reaction some people experience with wool. AND it’s naturally odor resistant. That means you can wear a merino wool item over and over again, with only an overnight airing out!

Wool& Merino Wool Dresses

Rowena swing dress, price: $138 USD

• Packability: 11 oz., wrinkle resistant.
• Versatility: simple swing dress, but can be styled as a top or tunic
• Ease of Care: fabric is 78% ultrasoft merino wool and 22% nylon
• Quality: very well made
• Comfort and Pleasure: temperature regulating, very comfortable, and has pockets!

I discovered Wool&, a small Oregon company producing merino wool clothing, through a Facebook ad. To prove the durability and natural odor resistance of merino wool, the company challenged people to wear their dress for 100 days straight. (I can’t imagine they expected this challenge to be so popular or to inspire an online community of women sharing the ups and downs of daily life over 100 days! No doubt the kindest group on social media!) Needless to say, given my interest in merino wool clothing, I was intrigued.

I base my capsule wardrobe on my favorite color, navy blue, so I opted for the Wool& signature item, the Rowena swing dress in marine blue. It’s a wonderful rich blue and I’m thrilled with the color. The dress has a boat neckline which is very flattering (and protective in the sunshine). As this is a swing dress, the body of the dress is loose, flowy, and flattering to my body shape. The material is light and lends itself to dozens of styling tricks and outfit ideas shared by the Facebook community. (There are many different colors available for this and other Wool& dresses)

My Wool& Review: Is this the best dress for traveling?

For the first month of the challenge, I played with the dress. I shopped my closet, pulling out long neglected items to pair with the dress. It was fun being creative with a simple piece of clothing, and truly surprising to pull out the dress each morning to find it as fresh as the day it arrived !

Then I got serious and began testing the dress for travel. I limited myself to a small capsule and worked on different outfits for different travel scenarios. First I wore the dress to my grandchild’s christening, and then another granddaughter’s lacrosse game. I wore it during zoom meetings, neighborhood clean-ups, and even for bike rides. The Wool& Rowena came through every time.

I had two opportunities to travel during this time – once to NYC for a fun weekend, and once to Texas for a sad event. The dress became my nightgown in Texas and gave me comfort.

Ease of Care: I aired out the dress every night – flipped it inside out and hung it over a bar. I sink-washed the dress six times and washed it in the washer once just to test durability. (I did use a lingerie bag) Day 100 the dress looked as fresh as on day 1.

Wool& offers several other travel dresses with pockets, including french terry dresses like the Sierra, a sleeveless option that’s very popular with travelers, the Everett, a tunic length sweater dress, and the Willow, a 3/4 sleeve swing dress with a V-neck.

Merino wool dresses are also offered by Icebreaker and Smartwool. Both brands produce quality goods so I’d feel confident ordering one of these if you find a style that suits you!

Amazon carries merino wool clothing at a more affordable price. I haven’t tried any of these so can’t speak to the quality. Let me know if you recommend them!

Best for a Special Event While Traveling

Chico’s Travelers Collection – dresses

• Price: ~$100-109 USD
• Packability: wrinkle resistant
• Versatility: n/a
• Ease of Care: machine or sink wash
• Fabric: 96% acetate, 4% elastane. From website: Our Travelers Classic collection contains Eastman Naia™, a sustainable cellulose fiber derived from wood pulp.
• Comfort and Pleasure: stylish, and flattering. Fabric has a bit of stretch for extra comfort

These packable travel dresses would be perfect for date nights, a destination wedding or afternoon tea party . Chico’s designs these dresses for all but I think the dresses, with their simple lines and great style, appeal especially to mature women. I like the mid-length pencil skirt look, but Chico’s also has cocktail dresses.

I don’t own any of these gorgeous dresses above because I have another Chico’s dress, bought 10 years ago, that still looks great! It’s a floral print and always in my luggage if I want to add a beautiful dress to my bag!

Our Favorite Convertible Travel Dresses

Origami by Diane Kroe

• Price: $150 CAD
• Packability: wrinkle resistant, but at 14.3 oz, not particularly lightweight
• Versatility: converts to multiple new looks – dress, halter top, batwing top, skirt
• Ease of Care: Dress is made from 92% poly and 8% spandex, so not a natural fabric, but it dries quickly and resists wrinkles.
• Quality: well made in Canada
• Comfort and Pleasure: stylish and extremely comfortable!

I’ve been a customer of Diane Kroe Designs for many years. I love the versatility of the collection. The Origami is one of my favorites. Usually I wear it as a top with skinny jeans or white pants, but I love having the option to wear it as a dress when traveling. This piece is great for older women travelers. The shape and drape are stylish and forgiving.

The main thing about convertible clothing is the style options while traveling. I’ve packed this dress specifically for special events but reached for it later in the trip as a light layer.

Best Dress for Sun Protection

Coolibar (Malta) Travel Shirt Dress –

• Versatility: wear it as a shirt dress, an opened jacket, or tie the ends to make a cute button-down shirt.
• Ease of Care: fabric is quick dry. Machine or hand wash in cold water,
• Fabric: from the website: Antimicrobial fabric that is lightweight, breathable and soft to the touch. With 4-way stretch it is naturally wrinkle resistant and moisture wicking.
• Comfort and Pleasure: a travel (and home!) classic style

What makes this a great choice? The Coolibar brand produces stylish clothing with sun protection – great for us older women! This shirt is rated UPF 50 and is breathable making it a great option for days of intense sun. The collar and cuffs can be adjusted to give maximum sun coverage.

Another great feature of the Malta is the hidden, zipped side pockets!

I was gifted the black version of the this dress. It is remarkably lightweight and cool. I wore it to a recent event – belted over leggings – and received lots of compliments!

Best of the rest: more suggestions for travel dresses

Athleta is one of my favorite brands for comfortable travel-friendly pants. I haven’t had the chance to try any of their dresses, but they offer several cute – short and sporty – dresses. You’ll find similar dresses at TitleNine.

For hard-working dresses suitable to many overseas trips check out Travelsmith, Magellan Travel Catalog, Lands End, L.L. Bean, and Orvis. These classic travel clothing companies will often have something that fits our easy-care, lightweight, wrinkle-free standards.

An option often offered in travel dresses is a reversible dress – pattern on one side and solid on the other. This might work for you, but I donated mine as it was too heavy. Some reversible dresses, like mine, are actually a two layer dress (a black sheath inside a patterned sheath). Thus the dress is heavier than a single layer dress.

A variant of the reversible dress that I do like is a dress with two necklines. Basically you can wear the dress back or front depending on the neckline you want. I love my Wool& Summer midi dress which has a high neckline and a v-neck neckline. This actually does give versatility to my travel wardrobe!

Have I convinced you to pack a dress for your travel?

Some last thoughts. The right dress can be endlessly useful during your travels. Wear it to a nice dinner? of course! But you can also wear it when you’re on a bus tour, for a hike in the mountains, and even sometimes as a workout tunic over exercise tights. (believe me. I’ve done it several times!)

Look in your closet first to see if there’s a dress that’ll be versatile, stylish, and easy care for your trip. If you need to buy a new dress find one that you can see wearing several times on your travels. Take some time before you leave to try the dress on, and play with accessories. That’s the best time to see if the dress deserves a place in your travel capsule wardrobe .

I’m about to embark on the Wool& 100 day challenge, and this post has me excited about all the possibilities! I’ve been interested in capsule wardrobes for a while. This might be my moment!

Oh my goodness! All the yesses!!!! I’ve done the challenge (in a Ro!) as well and am a full on convert to not only a merino wool fan but it has affirmed my love, desire, and need for a capsule wardrobe for every day and more.

I am finally getting to travel again soon and my Wool& dresses are all I’m planning on taking for core outfit pieces!

So, I have to ask, is the merino wool cool to wear? I am at the age where I am wearing t-shirts when everyone else is bundled up!

Yes! At least that’s my experience. The dress I purchased was long sleeved, and would not be ideal for a woman who’s usually hot. I have since purchased a sleeveless and short sleeved dress. Both wonderful on hot days.

Well I’ll definitely be reconsidering packing dresses in the future. Thanks!

I’ve just purchased a SmartWool sleeveless dress for a trip to Italy, but don’t know about shoes. Was planning to take only athletic shoes for comfort but they don’t look good with the dress. Suggestions?

Hi Joy, I use a scarf ring/loop I purchased from Amazon. I’m sure you can find one at a fabric store too!

Another trick you can use with either the scarf loop, or a smaller circular thing like a coin, is to place the loop either under or over the dress and gather the fabric around it with an elastic. It makes either a cute pucker or a button.

I thought that when traveling in some countries wearing yoga style pants identifies you as a tourist.

I would deeply appreciate a clear indication of which products are made from natural materials and which add plastic or non-degradable materials to our environment. I believe many of us are more concerned with helping to stem the production of man made non-biodegradable materials that hurt our environment, than we are with avoiding wrinkles. Final Thoughts on What to Wear on a Cruise for Ladies Over 60

As a woman of any age, it can be hard to know what to wear on a cruise, much less finind cruise wear that is flattering to our bodies as we are over 50, 60, 70 or any age.

We all have our own sense of style, which guides what we buy at the store and what we put on each morning. But across the board, you likely want to exude an air of confidence and perhaps, elegance. However, as we get older, it can be tricky to find pieces that feel elevated but never frumpy. If you're looking to strike this balance and dress classy over 60, stylists are here to help.

"To those who think they're too old to dress to impress, I have this to say: Some of the most iconic fashion legends hit their style prime after age 60, proving signature style isn't just for the young. Think Diana Vreeland , Iris Apfel , Linda Hopp —three examples of how elegance is an art form that takes practice, planning, and effort," Elizabeth Kosich , certified image stylist and founder of Elizabeth Kosich Styling , tells Best Life .

"However, the older we get the more challenging it is to stay on-trend, adapt wardrobes to lifestyle and dress our shifting shapes," she adds. "Keeping up can feel daunting but do not despair—growing old gracefully is easier than you think."

Kosich and her fellow stylists have some specific recommendations if you're looking to exude sophistication in your golden years. Read on for seven tips to help you feel classy in your 60s.

1 Consider the fit.

At any age, your look is elevated when your clothes fit properly. But when you're over 60, making sure you have well-tailored, staple items is essential.

"Upgrade your wardrobe with well-fitting anchor staples like black trousers, a classic LBD [little black dress], and an all-purpose blazer that fit with precision," Kosich says. "Find a great tailor to alter your favorite pieces for fit and comfort, and consider tailoring new purchases to optimize fit if needed." Brigid Stasen , elite stylist at Bridge Your Style , says jeans are one area where fit is particularly important, as is the wash of the denim. She suggests skipping the tight skinny jeans ("unflattering on most of us") and instead opting for straight-leg or boot-cut styles in medium blue, dark blue, and white.

Stassen also stresses being mindful of owning properly fitting undergarments . "They provide consistent comfort and support and enhance confidence," she says. "Therefore, getting fitted for undergarments is important rather than guessing the size, ensuring a better fit that will keep you comfortable all day or all night."

2 Go for quality.

Another way to exude class is by selecting quality pieces—and you can start doing this ASAP, even if your 60th birthday isn't for a few more years.

"The key to looking elegant after 60 is choosing high-quality materials so, after 50, start upgrading your wardrobe essentials piece by piece to keep it affordable," Kosich says. "Swap wool for cashmere, canvas for leather, and pearls for diamonds. Elevate your footwear game with premium leather sneakers or suede driving moccasins, and invest in a statement leather handbag suitable for both day and night."

Kosich notes that high-quality fabrics will have both weight and drape and won't "skimp on fabric yardage."

Stasen also says that sweaters in quality fabrics— like cashmere and cotton blends—are a "year-round accessory."

3 Invest in a blazer.

A blazer is an essential for a clean, chic, and classy look—and it's a must-have over 60, according to the stylists we consulted.

"A great blazer in a light wool/lycra blend is one of the most versatile pieces you will own," Stasen says. "[Go for one in] black, winter white, or navy to wear with jeans, skirts, dresses, and pants—it will elevate everything."

This is yet another item that needs to fit immaculately, she adds. Make sure it can button (even if you aren't going to wear it buttoned), and when in doubt, take it to your local tailor for any adjustments.

4 Remember, less is more.

If there's one thing to know about elevated, classy style, it's that less is more, according to Kosich.

5 Introduce statement pieces.

Statement pieces are a great way to introduce fun and color while still giving off an air of elegance. Not sure where to start? Kosich recommends experimenting with jewelry.

" Statement jewelry is the ultimate in sophistication and elegance, especially when it shares a chapter from your life story," she explains. "Wear a family heirloom, gift from someone special, gift to yourself, or memento from an exotic trip that says you've lived a big life. It's a great conversation starter and a way to show you're worldly, interesting, and wise from experience."

If you want to make a statement with your clothes instead, reach for a dress in a jewel tone, per Stasen's suggestion. These shades "look good on all skin tones," and will look even better if you can find a wrap dress in royal blue, deep purple, or emerald green.

6 It's not all about the clothes, either.

If you want to exude an air of elegance and class, you'll want to consider more than just your clothes.

" Coco Chanel once said, 'A woman who doesn't wear perfume has no future' to underscore the importance of making a lasting impression with a signature scent ," Kosich says. "Sophistication is tied to grooming just as much as wardrobe, so amp up personal care after 60 to maintain your core assets—hair, skin, and teeth."

7 Practice makes perfect.

It may take a few tries to get your ideal "classy" look down, but if you're putting your best face forward every day, you may realize it starts to come naturally.

"Dressing up daily gives off energy and confidence," explains Melony Huber , a global fashion stylist and co-founder of La Peony , an ethical lifestyle collection. "It shows you care about projecting your best self into the world each day."

While you're at it, if there's something that doesn't make you feel good, toss it.

"I recommend purging your closet," says Andréa Bernholtz , conscious lifestyle and sustainable fashion expert and founder of Swiminista . "Get rid of any items you don't want or [aren't] considered in your age group for fashion."

• Medical evacuation coverage - If you're injured or become sick while traveling, this coverage will transport you to the nearest hospital or even back home if your condition necessitates it.
• Preexisting conditions - Coverage for known health conditions. You'll need to purchase travel insurance within a certain time period from when you book your trip to qualify for a preexisting condition waiver .
• Cancel for any reason (CFAR) - The name says it all! It'll cost extra and you'll need to purchase insurance early, but it's the most comprehensive trip cancellation coverage you can get. Note that CFAR insurance usually only covers up to 75% of your trip fees.
• Trip cancellation insurance - This coverage provides reimbursement for your prepaid and nonrefundable costs if you cannot make your trip due to an unforeseen event.
• Baggage delay insurance - This coverage will reimburse you for essentials like toiletries and clothes if your bags are delayed.
• Lost luggage insurance - This coverage will reimburse you up to a specified amount if your bags get lost en route.

Of these, the most critical to note are whether or not your policy covers preexisting conditions and the limits for travel medical insurance and emergency medical evacuation.

Some insurance companies offer a waiver that will cover preexisting conditions. You'll have to follow the requirements for adding a waiver to your policy, like insuring the entire cost of your trip. Or purchase the policy within a specific time after making your first trip deposit payments.

You'll also want to find a policy with high maximum limits for travel medical and emergency medical evacuation coverage. These types of expenses can be substantial, so you want to have appropriate coverage.

Prioritize versatility.

When you’re on the road, your bag will only hold so much. So when you’re choosing what to wear on a trip, be it for work or vacation, pick apparel and accessories that you’ll be able to wear more than once.

In an ideal world, you could rock the same shoes every day and rotate a couple of pairs of pants, plus a tee or two. If you need more than that, think about how you can optimize your travel space, whether that means wearing your suit trousers on travel days or relying on your favorite hoodie for workouts and colder days at the office.

Consider care instructions

If you’ve ever traveled for more than a day or two, you’ll know that sometimes you need to do laundry while you’re out on a trip. Bring apparel that is either easy to wash or doesn’t need to be washed frequently.

Prioritize performance fabrics that are moisture-wicking and antimicrobial to keep sweat and stink at bay. Undershirts you can wear more than once and socks that don’t pick up a stench after a few hours will come in clutch.
