10 Comfortable Travel Outfits For Women Over 60

Best Travel Outfits for Ladies Over 60 . No matter what your age there is no reason you can’t still rock a stylish look. This post looks at several ways the older woman can look stunning wherever she may be on the globe and regardless of the time of year.

For the traveling woman in her 60s and beyond, deciding on a great outfit can be a little challenging. Am I going to be too warm? Am I going to be too cold? Are these colors ideal? What shoes are best for me? Do I want to be comfortable or stylish? Can I be both? These questions can be easily answered in our top 10 outfit picks.

The best way to set a good wardrobe is to choose the right colors. Neutral tones, black, grey, navy, and tones like mustard yellow or aubergine purple are great options to create a gorgeous look with ease. There are also some tried-and-true pieces you may want to consider. Look through our recommended ensembles for more ideas on how to dress while traveling.

What to Wear When Traveling In Your Sixties

Remember, this article talks mainly about what to wear while traveling… not necessarily what to wear once you reach your destination. However, you can certainly apply some of the tips we have included here, as they are handy and even universal. Here are some hard and fast rules to get you started:

  • Incorporate pieces into your travel outfit that you will also wear after reaching your destination. This is a brilliant way to conserve space in your bags, especially if you are trying to travel light. Examples of pieces you can wear en route versus packing would be a scarf, a pair of earrings, a blazer, a hair accessory, or a pair of comfy shoes.
  • Never wear brand-new shoes on a trip , as they will be less comfortable and may hurt your feet, which could definitely affect how enjoyable your trip is. Break them in first.
  • Dress for comfort, but avoid common comfort pieces such as elastic band pants (these don’t flatter anyone), shapeless dresses, oversized tee-shirts, sweaters with embroidery or appliques, and unstructured suits.
  • Consider a capsule wardrobe for traveling . If you don’t know how to build one, there are several videos on YouTube, as well as articles online, that you can learn from. A capsule wardrobe makes traveling light easy and building outfits a lot simpler as well.
  • Try a monochromatic look . This can be a really simple way to put together an outfit that is stylish without investing too much time in coordinating various pieces of different colors. Our only caution is to not wear head-to-toe denim. That is one monochromatic look we do not advise! You should also choose a color that suits your overall complexion.

If you dont have time to go through the complete article, just watch this short video summary:

↓ 10. Tailored Jacket and Slacks

In our last post we talked about Fashion Tips For 60 Plus Women , and today we’ll be focusing on travel outfits. When packing light, one good jacket is a must. We recommend having yours tailored and choosing one in a neutral shade (black, white, navy, or beige) to ensure it goes with the rest of your outfits. Three-quarter length sleeves are also advisable: they give less of an “office” feel to your jacket and keeps the look fresh and sophisticated.

The outfit pictured below is a lovely option for the traveling lady: black straight-leg pants that fall right below the ankle are not only comfortable to wear but they are versatile and can be worn with many other outfits throughout your trip.

Pair with a black top, a tailored jacket of your choosing (we think the black-and-white combo is classy), and add a pretty scarf to tie the look together. Last but not least, we have a simple pair of neutral sandals. Elevate the ensemble with a classic makeup look, a great shade of lipstick, and painted nails.

↓ 9. Soft Pink Jacket and Heels

For a trip where your travel time is not so lengthy, a pair of heels can be incredibly stylish. But we advise wearing heels only when your travel time is short as heels aren’t practical or super comfortable to wear for long periods of time (as we are sure you can attest to). For a short train trip or plane ride, we love this classic ensemble.

Once again, we see the versatility of plain black pants. You can create any number of outfits with them, simply change out the jacket and accessories. (You can also tweak this look to make it appropriate for a longer trip by switching out the heels for flats.)

We always recommend bringing color into your looks as well, whenever possible. If you don’t know already, find out what colors work best with your complexion. The darker your skin, the more bright colors you can wear. Fairer skin types may have to experiment with various shades to avoid looking washed out.

↓ 8. Velvet Jacket and Patterned Jeans

Many style icons of a mature age tend to stick to solid colors when creating outfits. This is a viable and effective option for sure. However, you need not feel that it excludes the wearing of any prints or patterns ever.

If you have discovered that you love a great pair of patterned pants, then definitely incorporate it as a signature style in your wardrobe. Just be sure that it suits you and your body type and doesn’t go overboard.

Wearing jeans might be another thing you have been taught to avoid, but as pictured below, they are certainly ways to wear them that will suit your overall appearance as well as your age and style choices. Straight-leg jeans in dark washes are preferable.

You can also try wide-legged jeans or flared jeans, which can help make you appear taller. Choose jeans that have a little stretch (1% or 2% is suitable) to help with problem areas. Tucking in your top and adding a belt is also a great way to create a slimming silhouette.

↓ 7. Neutrals for Fall Traveling

While traveling in the fall, two things may be on your mind: practicality and warmth. But if you are reading this article, a third thing is probably at the forefront of your thoughts, and that is style. Is it possible to dress stylishly while also being practical and staying warm?

Absolutely. And here is a great example. From the straight-leg jeans (comfortable, versatile) to the slightly puffed-sleeve jacket (stylish, warm) to the checkered scarf (warmth!) this look has it all. You can also wear layers to provide extra warmth like a long-sleeved top under the jacket.

Be sure to accessorize with some statement earrings and add some lipstick to round out the look. We also love the neutral color scheme as this is an easy and practical way to stay stylish without having to put too much thought into it. It also makes designing outfits easier as everything already matches.

↓ 6. Statement Jewelry & Accessories

Traveling whilst wearing too many pieces of jewelry can be more of a hassle than what it’s worth. If you are going through airport security, you may have to remove all of it which can be time-consuming and inconvenient. Our solution is to pick a few statement pieces and go for a minimalistic look.

Here we see a chunky chain necklace paired with stud earrings and a couple of bracelets. They would take only a minute or two to remove and they help elevate the overall look as well. A crossbody bag is also an accessory we love.

It’s practical and easy to keep track of (unlike a handbag, which must be constantly looked after) as it hangs on the body. When choosing yours, a neutral color is optimal (at least for traveling), and if it features a pretty belt buckle or other features like a tassel, hurrah for you.

Of course, to elevate any look, you need to put on the right amount of makeup and use the right products which is why I highly recommend that you go through these Makeup Tips for Older Women from Professionals .

↓ 5. Helen Mirren Travel Style

It’s hard not to be enchanted by Helen Mirren. From her extensive body of work to her absolutely cutting-edge red carpet style, it’s safe to say we are major fans. So we couldn’t overlook her in our roundup of style inspiration for developing a travel wardrobe over 50 and 60.

Here she is, showcasing a simple but easily imitated look that, yes, includes some plain black pants. (What can we say? They just really work.) We love the fur stole she included, the two-toned flats, and the lace-finished top. Want to feel like a celebrity travelling in style? Add some incognito sunglasses to the mix.

A light jacket is a must to add when you are designing your summer travel wardrobe over 50 and 60. It is the perfect piece to round out a stylish look, plus it’s great when you are traveling by plane or train, areas that are typically air-conditioned in the warmer months. Opt for a neutral color and timeless pattern.

↓ 3. Animal Print Sweater & Booties

Casual clothes for a 60-year-old woman may not need to be as chic as this look, but when given the choice between a shapeless shift and a great sweater/pants combo, we will always recommend the latter. An outfit like this is basic, but makeup, accessories, and shoes help bring it up to a sophisticated level.

We also love animal print anything on a mature lady – within moderation, of course. Keep it understated but don’t be afraid of a great shade of lipstick worn with some statement sunglasses to showcase your adventurous spirit and vivacious personality. You can find more ideas like these from my earlier post on Cutest Animal Print Outfits for Women this Season .

↓ 1. How Should A Petite Over 60 Dress?

Our final outfit picks offer two options for the over 60 ladies. If you are on the taller side, a knee-length dress with a v-cut neckline and button detailing is a great option for you. While we normally advise steering clear of shapeless shifts, this one offers a v-neckline that is slimming and offers some visual structure.

The buttons also help draw the eye to the center. For a petite lady, here is one travel option for you: a top in a flattering color paired with wide-legged pants and pretty flat sandals.

Frequently Asked Questions

Here are some frequently asked questions about travel clothes for older ladies and more. If you don’t see your question answered here, leave us a comment down below and we will be sure to get back to you!

Q. What should a 60-year-old woman wear?

A. It depends on the woman, but a 60-year-old lady should dress in the clothing she has learned best suits her. This may look a little different than what it did when she was 20, but then it should! No matter our age, dressing according to it is the surest way to age gracefully and fearlessly. So ask yourself: what colors have I learned best suit my complexion? What is my current body type? Do I look my best in tailored clothing? Is orange really not my color?

Assess your current wardrobe and find out if you need to update it a bit. Do you have a signature work-horse style piece that you feel confident in? Consider investing in a few more pieces like it. You may have a few trouble spots you want to conceal or move attention away from (we all do, after all). Learn how to work with those spots. A 60-year-old woman should dress as she wants to be seen (elegant, sophisticated, vivacious, etc.) as well as feel.

Q.   How should I dress in my 60s?

A. This question goes hand-in-hand with our previous question and answer, but to add to it, our primary advice is to seek out style icons you can learn from to inspire you in your ongoing cultivation of a wardrobe best suited to a lady in her 60s.

Do you have a favorite actress or celebrity that embodies a style you admire? Think of Helen Mirren, Meryl Streep, Anna deWintour, or Michelle Pfeiffer. Or perhaps you grew up admiring the likes of Elizabeth Taylor, Grace Kelly, or Katherine Hepburn. While styles have changed since these beauties were in their 60s, don’t be afraid to bring some of what you loved about their wardrobes to your own. Katherine Hepburn was as famous for her elegant pantsuits as Grace Kelly was her timeless style and poise.

You also probably already know what things to avoid. Neon leggings and miniskirts are best left to the preteens. While you certainly don’t want to appear too juvenile, you also shouldn’t feel like you are stuck with elastic-band pants and muumuus. There is a happy medium where you wear your age proudly, with all the grace, elegance, and sophistication your lived years have developed in you. Focus on what pieces most suit you in this stage and stick to those. Having a signature look needn’t be boring; it is just another facet of what makes you, well, you!

We hope you found this article on what to wear travelling for ladies over 60 helpful. Looking stylish at any age takes some effort but it’s always doable. Do you have any tips or secrets for travelling as a woman over 60? Let us know in the comments below!

Traveling in heels or ballet flats is not realistic. Walking all day on older feet knees requires supportive shoes. Please advise! Thanks

Hi Jannie, are you looking for shoe recommendations or travel tips? During my travels I usually wear sneakers (my favorite brands to shop for comfortable sneakers are Reebok and Skechers). But on days when I’m dressed up and would want pictures in heels, I carry my heels with me in my bag. I wear them for the pictures and then go back to my sneakers lol. I know it can sound difficult but it’s actually really convenient and you get some magical pics. Of course you need to look for lightweight heels that you would be comfortable carrying around. Let me know if this helps 🙂 Please follow us on Instagram too love 🙂 Best Regards, Olivia, Content Manager at Outfit Trends.

When it comes to travel clothes, it feels like you have to make a choice: comfortable (but looks like you’re setting out on an expedition) or stylish (but uncomfortable for long flights or walking).

However, if you dig hard enough, you’ll find some gems that hit the travel trifecta: comfortable, stylish, and versatile. These ridiculously comfortable and good-looking shoes and clothes are worthy of a spot in your suitcase.

All of the products featured in this story were hand-selected by our travel editors. Some of the links featured in this story are affiliate links, and SmarterTravel may collect a commission (at no cost to you) if you shop through them.

Coolibar Prado Shirt Dress

Two colors of the Coolibar Prado Shirt Dress

Coolibar’s Prado Shirt Dress is unbelievably lightweight—made from a silky Aire fabric, the dress manages to be seriously cooling while providing ample coverage. The Prado dress is ridiculously comfortable (it feels like wearing nothing) but still looks stylish and pulled-together with a matching tie belt.

PrAna Koen Pant

The PrAna Koen Pant in olive green

PrAna’s Koen Pants might just be the perfect travel pants. Available in a number of neutral colors plus a wide range of sizes (including short, regular, and tall inseams), buying off the rack can feel like picking custom pants. The hem is adjustable, so you can dial in the length even further.

These nylon pants are pull-on for comfort (and feature an internal drawcord to keep them snugly in place). Our favorite feature is the Koen’s flat front slash pockets which have concealed zippers, giving the pants a flattering look (no more bulging pockets at the hips) while still offering a safe place for your phone.

Toad & Co Sunkissed Liv Dress

The Toad & Co Sunkissed Liv Dress

The lightweight material is made from majority recycled polyester and dyed using a waterless process. It’s also bluesign approved.

The Liv Dress has plenty of traveler-friendly features, including a hidden zip stash pocket and a wrinkle-resistant fabric.

Chaco Bodhi

the Chaco Bodhi sandal

Active sandals are traditionally chunky and not the most stylish. Fortunately, Chaco has made a slimmed down version of their hefty adventure shoes, so you can truly pack just one pair of sandals for an entire trip. The Bodhi has all the features you need for long walks, water adventures, or hikes (a no-slip outsole, toe loop for secure fit, and adjustable straps) but it looks like a classic sandal that won’t look out of place when worn out to dinner. Bonus: It’s ultra lightweight, weighing just 7.34 ounces) making it easy to pack.

Kuhl Skyla Dress

The Kuhl Skyla Dress in blue

Kuhl’s Skyla Dress is perfect for hot weather trips. The high neckline and UPF 30+ fabric provide solid sun protection, and the soft organic cotton/modal blend helps keep sweat away. Two side pockets are big enough to hold your phone and any other necessities.

My Anatomie Travel Capsule Wardrobe: Best Wrinkle Free Travel Clothes for Women

Sharing is Caring!

I have this thing. If I have really nice clothing – like, favourite stylish travel clothes, I tend not to wear them as often as I’d like to. Instead, I still wear wrinkle-free travel clothes – but cheaper, older, less comfortable, or less stylish clothes and I justify keeping my favourites in the (proverbial) closet (which for me is actually my luggage ), so I can save them for a more “special” occasion.

best travel clothes over 60

I saw Loretta LaRoche speak at a conference. She grew up being told by her mother that she could only wear her nice underwear on special occasions. Thing is, there was never an occasion special enough to put on these “party pants”. She also poked fun at people who have sitting rooms they never sit in, with nice furniture covered in protective plastic. Her theory was that we could all love life a lot more if we enjoyed the things we have rather than perpetually saving them for another day….a day that may never come.

I’m here to say it’s time to wear our party pants.

I have traveled with two tiny packing cubes of easy care travel clothes from Anatomie Travel Clothing for three weeks, in true capsule wardrobe fashion. It changed the way I will travel (and live!) forever.

And for the fellas: Here’s your own Travel Capsule Wardrobe for Men !

NOTE: This article was originally published in 2016, and gets updated regularly – at least once a year. Some of the styles pictured here have been discontinued; I’ve replaced some with newer shots, but I also wanted to show that I’ve been wearing Anatomie clothes for over a DOZEN years! Even though some styles come and go, the signature materials, design ethics, elevated style, and travel-friendly properties remain constant.

My Journey With Anatomie Travel Clothing

The birth of the Anatomie capsule wardrobe idea

I visited Anatomie Travel Clothing’s headquarters in Miami. I’d been a fan of Anatomie for years already; they sent me my first outfit in 2012 – an outfit that is still going strong, all these years (and abuse) later. (See also: Anatomie – My New Favourite Travel Clothing )

Shawn and Kate (Anatomie’s co-founders) talked about cost-per-wear. While doing some math, I realized that their prices (a stumbling block for me) weren’t as high as I’d initially thought if I worked out how many miles I could get out of them – literally and figuratively. So, I threw out my jeans .

I returned to Anatomie’s headquarters a second time with a furrowed brow. My favourite travel pants – the Kate Skinny Cargo pants, which I got just a couple of years prior – had worn in the strangest of ways. It led to concerns about the quality of their travel clothes on the whole. My original capris were doing great! Why had the Kate pants deteriorated like this in a fraction of the time?

Anatomie was churning out a huge number of new styles at the time, becoming a highly-recognized brand name in the luxury market as the ultimate travel clothes for women. Had they grown too big for their own good?

Luckily, my concerns were assuaged when I received a brand new pair of Kate pants and was assured that any customer with a similar problem would be afforded the same treatment. They said that occasionally material from the end of a roll could do funny things like this, and while they hadn’t seen this particular problem before, they would look out for it in the future.

While Anatomie may be growing exponentially, they still pride themselves on superior service and developing long-term relationships with their customers, as evidenced by the expedient replacement of my defective pants, their personal style concierge service, and more.

Not only did they replace my Kate pants, but they loaded me up with a whole bunch of new styles and Anatomie “ Travel Essential ” pieces. (Travel Essentials are styles they carry year after year because they’re so popular, and customers get angry if Anatomie stops making them.)

With this gift of new clothes, they issued me a challenge: pack and wear only Anatomie clothes for my next trip. So, I did; the next opportunity I had to leave my big suitcase I armed myself for three weeks with two wee packing cubes of Anatomie clothes.

Here’s what I learned about what makes for the best wrinkle free travel clothes for women. (See the end of this post for an exact list of what I traveled with, so you can design your own ideal travel capsule wardrobe).

Two packing cubes, used for my Anatomie travel capsule wardrobe challenge

Before we go any further, I must tell you that I have received a ton of Anatomie clothing for free since the beginning of my partnership. I’ll also add that I’ve bought many styles for myself at retail prices. I put my money where my mouth is, and I endorse Anatomie for having terrific travel clothes for women. As such, if you click on any of the links in this post and buy Anatomie clothes, I will receive a small commission. It doesn’t affect your price, and it helps me keep running The Professional Hobo . I appreciate your support in advance!

Use the discount code NORA20 to get $20 off your order! (Minimum order amount is $120 to qualify. Enjoy free shipping on all domestic orders.

Quality travel clothing will go the distance – literally and figuratively.

My Cargo Capris (since discontinued, though keep an eye on the Anatomie website – they occasionally revive them for a season) are still going strong since getting them in 2012. This is one style that I haven’t saved for special occasions; over the years, I’ve worn these pants more than any other pair of pants I’ve owned. Like, ever. After all these years of abuse, the material is softer and even comfier.

I’ve washed them in dodgy washing machines around the world, and they’ve even seen a few dryers (which you’re not supposed to do, FYI). The only thing I can say is that the material has thinned out a little (but not so much as to be a problem), and has also stretched out a little (due to my own weight gain/loss/gain/loss/etc. over the years).

Regarding fit in general, Anatomie advises that you can expect that the signature stretch wrinkle-free material used for their pants will stretch over time (it’s what makes Anatomie pants a custom fit, as it stretches to hug your curves perfectly). More on this later.

Washing and Drying

If you’re traveling with a limited (capsule) wardrobe, washing and drying must be easy.

Need to dry your pants in a hurry? A simple hairdryer will do the trick in just a few mins! (Almost) everything Anatomie offers is machine washable in cold water.

Machine dryers, in general, are horrible on your clothes (they exponentially accelerate deterioration), nor are they particularly environmentally friendly. Luckily most Anatomie styles dry quickly, usually overnight.

Wrinkle Free Packing

Packing light means not having a lot of space. Irons are not an option.

Are you worried about cramming those expensive duds into a packing cube ? Don’t. Anatomie makes easy care travel clothes, and although some pieces may come out of your luggage looking wrinkled, the wrinkles easily fall out as soon as you put them on. You will love their wrinkle resistant fabrics, life-changing!

Other styles made of crazy comfy jersey and mesh (here are their current lightweight jackets and wide variety of shirts ) are truly wrinkle free in all respects. Scrunch it up in a ball in your bag. I dare ya.

Comfort Vs. Style

There’s nothing worse than being uncomfortable. Except perhaps, being underdressed.

Luckily there’s no compromise! I’m just as comfy in my Luisa skinny jeans  on a plane as I am in a pair of leggings. Except, I’m wearing something considerably more stylish than leggings.

Even the Andrea Contrast Panel leggings are more-than-leggings.

For me, the perfect travel wardrobe has stylish travel clothes, without being pretentious. Regardless of whether you’re dressed up or down, you’re comfortable. Travel throws you enough curveballs; you’d better be comfy in your second skin.

On the topic of comfort, their Pima Cotton Tank Tops  are made from Pima cotton, from Peru. I was ambivalent when they suggested I try it out ( it’s a plain tank top….kinda boring right? ), but it quickly became my absolute favourite top to wear. It’s suuuuuuuper soft, breathable, won’t shrink, goes with everything, and just like most of Anatomie’s styles, can be machine washed (on cold), and will dry fast.

The Pam Mesh Panel Long Sleeve Top from Anatomie is great wrinkle free travel clothing!

Staying Warm

Cool/cold weather is the biggest challenge to packing light. The secret is in layering.

Most of Anatomie’s travel clothing styles are very lightweight – which is both a selling point and a challenge. The signature stretch fabric used to make most of their pants is light as a feather, which means it won’t weigh you down as you take off, but if you’re taking off to chilly places, you might be cold.

Over the years, I’ve found ways to circumvent these challenges:

Layer Under. While most of Anatomie’s travel pants are slim-fitting, there’s still room for a pair of leggings underneath for added warmth.

Layer Over. This is where Anatomie’s travel jackets shine. While one of their mesh jackets is ridiculously comfortable over a tank top and takes the edge off a summer night, it’s also warmer than it looks and can be worn over a long-sleeved top (which also shows through the mesh, and looks very nice).

The same goes for the Kenya Safari Jacket , which is hands-down their most popular travel jacket , and for good reason. It’s roomy enough to go over thicker under-layers, yet form-fitting enough to be super stylish and flattering.

best travel clothes over 60

If you find yourself in even chillier climes, they have a selection of quilted, cashmere, and even leather styles. I still have a style of an Anatomie travel jacket (which they don’t carry anymore) that is ideal for shoulder season climates.

Anatomie travel jackets go the mile for comfort and style!

2024 UPDATE: I spent a whole winter in a snowy mountain town, with the help of Anatomie’s new Cozy Essentials lineup ! Their fleece-lined signature styles (like the Kenya Jacket and Skyler Pants) are literally the comfiest clothes I own – super stretchy and soft. And lucky for me, they’re also the most stylish clothes I own. Best of all worlds!

Free Returns and Clothing Guarantees

Spending a lot of money on the perfect travel capsule wardrobe? Free returns are critical.

I’m still leery of ordering clothes online. Even with sizing charts, you just never know how something will fit.

Anatomie understands this, and orders placed in the U.S. include free returns . And rumour has it they’re going to offer free returns to Canadian customers very soon too!

So if you’re curious about how that shirt or pair of pants will fit, there’s no risk in ordering it and finding out first-hand.

The same goes for clothing defects. While normal wear and tear are on your own dime, if there’s a problem with an Anatomie style, they’ll send you a new pair, as I experienced myself. Anatomie wants you to be 100% happy with your clothes, as they’ve demonstrated to me repeatedly.

Travel Clothing for Women with Curves

Most people aren’t models. So how do we know if those pants will actually fit AND look good?

Over the years, I’ve grown, and not just emotionally! While I’m not disproportionate or overweight, my measurements baffle many sizing charts.

While trying to order pants and a shirt from (another) online clothing company, I couldn’t figure out which sizes to get. According to their sizing charts, I was somewhere between a Small and Medium for the shirt (but my bust measurement said I should be Large – and believe me, my boobs aren’t that spectacular).

When it came to my lower half, my self-esteem “bottomed” out. While I was accustomed to being a size 6-8, my recent weight gain put me in the (8-10) category. This particular clothing company’s size 12 looked like it would still be too small. And….size 12 was their largest size. Who does that?!?! I have no idea what other curvy women would do if they tried to order anything from this company. (To their credit, my complaints inspired them to change their sizing charts, which is why they shall remain nameless in this post.) I simply share this story here as an example of how screwed up sizing is across the board, especially when it comes to women’s pants.

Shawn (Anatomie’s co-founder and chief designer) stood by while I tried on a huge variety of clothes, and he told me how they’re supposed to fit and made specific sizing recommendations.

Even though I wanted to err on the side of caution with larger sizes, Shawn warned me that most of Anatomie’s pants stretch up to a whole size over time ; and my older Anatomie pants are testament to this. So, if your own Anatomie travel pants are a bit tight to begin with, never fear: their signature stretch fabric is a bit of a miracle-worker and will mold to your curves perfectly with time.

Loving the Kenya Safari Jacket by Anatomie: best wrinkle free travel clothing for women

Here are some observations about how Anatomie’s stylish travel clothes are made for curvy women :

  • The Suzette Skort  has built-in jersey bicycle shorts. While this does add a bit to the packing weight and bulk, my thighs thanked me; can you say “ no thigh rub?? ” (Not a fan of the short skirt? I get it. Here are their current dresses , which include some super classy styles. I own their Marine Travel Dress , which is super flattering for all figures and made of a material that can literally be balled up and stuffed into a corner of my luggage and come out ready for the runway).
  • I asked Shawn which styles of Anatomie’s travel pants are best for the curvy woman; he said the Kate Pant  (which I can attest to). More recently, Anatomie has come out with a whole line of pants for curvy women! You can now shop their entire site by body type , which is very useful.
  • Not all women appreciate tight shirts. While I do recommend having at least one somewhat form-fitting tank top and long-sleeved top for layering underneath jackets and such, I also like having a “let it all hang out” sort of top. Anatomie has a selection of looser-fitting tops that will turn heads; just have a browse through the store to see their latest designs, as their styles are always changing.

Not sure yourself? Here is one of the many bangs you get for your buck with Anatomie, in addition to free returns and quality guarantees: their personal Style Concierge will assist you with personalized fit and styling tips . You’ll find their personal email on the Contact page of the website, and their assistance is very valuable (and of course, free).

Anatomie Wrinkle Resistant Clothing Recommendations

Here is what I packed when I took the challenge to travel with only Anatomie clothing. Note: many of the exact items I took with me have been discontinued. I’ve switched them out here with new items (that I own) which are comparable replacements. Depending on the climate at your destination, you might want to adjust this selection. For example when visiting a hot climate you’ll want to switch out a jacket or long-sleeved shirt for another tank/tee. This travel capsule wardrobe is ideal for warm temperate weather.

Bailey Mesh Jacket (it won’t wrinkle, no matter how hard you try!)

Kenya Safari Jacket (stylish, can be worn with sleeves rolled up or down, zipped up to the neck, etc)

Calista Rollup Henley Top (pima cotton, long-sleeved), AND/OR

Alida button-down Poplin Shirt (I love this dressy shirt because the front panel is a structured material, and the arms and back are soft stretchy jersey)

Jackson Pima Cotton Tank (a staple for any travel wardrobe, perfect on its own and for layering)

Flo Tee (note: here’s their current collection of tops to choose from )

Suzette Skort (with built-in jersey bicycle shorts)

Luisa Skinny Jean OR Kate Skinny Cargo Pant (I own and adore both, but I choose just one per trip)

Darby Pant (new in 2024 to their lineup; a looser-fitting pant made with their signature stretch light material)

BONUS: My Top Packing Tips Video

I know, I know. I must sound like a psychotic cheerleader. I promise, I haven’t been drugged, nor unduly forced to write all these accolades. Anatomie approached to develop a long-term relationship, much like they do with all their customers. (The difference being, they started me off with a free outfit, which inspired my love affair with them. Lucky me!).

And as much as I love Anatomie, they love me too, and they’re fascinated at how I traveled with carry-on luggage only for two whole years! While I was visiting Anatomie’s headquarters this year, they turned on the cameras and got me to share my top packing tips for ultralight travel. Here’s what I had to say:

Noted for my wife Nora. I dig the party pants analogy. Good to know of the wrinkle free aspect too; sometimes we travel outside of the tropics. Humidity in places takes care of wrinkles fast but outside of the tropics you need quality, wrinkle-free clothes. Or an iron and board which ain’t happening around much of the world.

That is, unless you practice “extreme ironing”….in which case…..bring on the ironing board! LOL

This is a great post, with the exception of all the body shaming. What’s up with the “real” woman stuff? Is a model a “fake” woman? You’re a great writer, and I know there’s a better way you can get your point across without making some women feel like they don’t qualify as “real” women.

Hey Beck, Great observation – thank you! While curvy women seem to get the short end of the stick when it comes to body image issues and persecution on a variety of levels, you are right in that I haven’t acknowledged skinny women as being “real”. I’ve removed all language that isolates any body type as being “real” or otherwise.

Thank you! It makes a difference 🙂

I’m sorry But HAVING mainly ANOREXIC MODELS EVERYWHERE ADVERTISING LADIES CLOTHING IS NOT REALISTIC AND DOES NOTHING BUT PUT UNREALISTIC IMAGES on how we should LOOK and THAT’S wrong because yes they ARE FAKE THEIR ANOREXIC AIRBRUSHED BLOWN UP/ DEFLATED ETC ( REFERRING TO DIFFERENT AREAS OF BODY) Therefore We have TOO MANY GIRLS GROWING UP WANTING 2 LOOK LIKE THAT INSTEAD OF BEING HAPPY WITH WHO THEY ARE SO THEY WIND UP DEAD!!!!!! FROM STARVATION. DEPRESSION OVERDOSE PREGNANT ALL DUE TO UNREALISTIC TOOTHPICK IMAGE MEDIA PLACES ON HOW FEMALE BODY SHOULD LOOK

AMEN TO ALL LADIES OF ALL SIZES WHO ARE NATURAL WITHOUT ANY COSMETIC SURGERY DONE!!!

I am very happy 2 see women of all sizes are finally being noticed and admired!

Nora, I was ready to like this company you love in spite of the big price tags. Just thought you should be aware how an ordinary customer is treated. I found this in the reviews from the Skyler Skinny Pant. I’m afraid that you get special treatment from the company. If they really backed up their products for defects it might be worth it. But 10% discount is nothing to compensate this woman for a messed up zipper on a very expensive pair of pants.

hannah poor policy I have purchased a pair of Anatomie pants and was very satisfied with the product, until I had the inner seam of the zipper seperate from the fabric so they are no longer wearable. I have worn the pants no more than 10 times, but being outside of the 30 days they would not help me. Since this was obviously a quality issue I feel like this says something about the company as a whole. Anatomie >> replied: Hannah, thank you for contacting us; we apologize for the inconvenience. We looked into the matter and since the pants were purchased about a year ago, and that particular style is no longer in production, we will not be able to issue a replacement. But we would like to offer you 10% off your next purchase for the inconvenience encountered. If you have any other questions, please contact us at [email protected] , we would love to help!

Hi Linda, Oh my! That’s not good. I’ve contacted the team at Anatomie to look into this. I hope there’s another side to this story, because indeed, this contradicts what I understand their customer service policy to be.

I wonder if perhaps she bought the last of a line that was being discontinued and was thus on clearance sale. Anything on super clearance wouldn’t likely be subject to the same return/exchange policy.

Nora, since I wrote the above post, I have given Anatomie a try. Customer service has been wonderful, namely Raquel. It’s very difficult to get the style and size right on first try and she’s shown some flexibility. I tried the popular Skyler pants and am lukewarm about the fit. I’m going to give your Luisa Skinny Jeans a try! (Did you by any chance try the Lora Nylon & Fleece jacket? Seems to be one of their Italian items.)

Anyway, I love your blog! I signed up for your emails and am loving your writing and all the helpful information. I’m simply thrilled!

P.S. We’re going to Cuenca January-February! We’re putting the house on the market and hope to find house-sitting gigs while we are here in the Atlanta area to give us more flexibility. We had part of this plan in process when I landed on your blog. You gave me the extra push I needed to try house-sitting and work-aways. We had already signed up for WorkAway and my nephew uses WWOOF. We’ll probably try both!

Hi Linda, I’m so very glad that you gave Anatomie a shot and that your experience has been positive! I didn’t really like the Skyler pant fit either, so I hope you like the Luisa in contrast (I think you will). I haven’t tried the Lora jacket, but it looks beautiful.

And thank you for reading! Good luck with the sale of the house (and all your stuff in it – ha ha), and I hope you enjoy your time in Cuenca. It’s a gorgeous place.

Happy Travels!

From being stylish to help you get through your daily workouts, leggings have got it all.

Amen to that!

I keep asking for someone to post a blog for clothes for women over 60. Everything I see is for twenty year old. Travelled to over 65 countries. Now in my seventies cannot wear the ridiculous clothes and shoes., no one writes for older women. Pity.

Hi Sue, I’m sorry you feel under-represented and under-served by myself and other sites. I would have thought that at least some of the styles offered by Anatomie are ageless. Many are conservative, and most are classy – especially the jackets and tops.

It seems you are raving about quite a few garments no longer made. Perhaps you should update and let us know how the replacement garments actually pack and hold up.

Lastly, cost-per-wear is simply semantics for overcharging. Much can be done with less expensive clothing. You just gotta throw on a pashmina or a bright scarf over inexpensive tops and slacks/skirts.

This is not to say expensive travel clothing doesn’t have its place. I definitely have some expensive regular clothing, since I show dogs. (Take a look at the womens’ suits worn on the Westminster telecast, including St. John’s.) But I’m buying less expensive travel clothing so I may spend my money in Florence. 😎

Hi Jennifer, I think the very fact that I’m still wearing styles I got 10 years ago (that have since been discontinued) it testament to how long Anatomie clothing lasts! I haven’t had to replace them. New designs by Anatomie (and they’re constantly updating their lineup as many fashion brands do) continue to use their signature stretch material and other travel-friendly materials. So it’s safe to assume their new styles pack and hold up just as well as all the garments I’ve gotten over the last 10 years.

As for cost-per-wear and choice of travel clothing, all that boils down to your budget and your priorities. Spending less money on clothes so you can spend more money in Florence is a perfectly justifiable decision!

As a former national sewing instructor and alterations expert, I have to respectfully disagree. Cost-per-wear is a valid calulation, but one easily forgotten in these days of disposable clothing. (I’m not talking about overpaying for a logo, but buying true quality.) Compare a dense wool winter coat or jacket with proper interfacing, interlining, thermal lining, appropriate stitching with durable high-quality thread and natural horn buttons V. a trendy coat from a big box or mall store made from a cheap blend that beads up, little if any interfacing, thin rayon lining, long stitches of flimsy poly thread and plastic buttons that doesn’t combat the cold or breathe like a natural fiber. Real quality means buy it once, take care of it, wear it for years. Or… buy cheap where only pennies of the price are spent on overseas labor and oil-based, polluting materials while the rest is spent on polluting transportation and trendy marketing, just to result in pilling within a wash or two, and sweat and stink that clings to the cheap fabric, then toss it in a landfill where it sits unchanged for generations or crate it on a pallet and ship it yet again to a poor country where starving children pick for rags. A quick google will provide a thorough and absolutely shocking education on how cheap fashion has degraded people, industry and our environment — all for a $10 pair of sweat pants that won’t last a season. If people focused their closets (and suitcases) on a classic, high-quality, long-lasting classic capsule wardrobe and supplemented with very few, cheap trendy pieces, they’d be much more comfortable, cause a lot less damage… and spend a LOT less in the long run. So the next time you compare prices, think about what went into producing the garment, the quality of the materials and construction, how long it will last, how it will hold up over time – and do that cost per wear.

Very well said and something not enough people think about. Unfortunately people on a low income (such as myself) can’t often afford to spend a lot on clothes. I am a larger women, so my choices of where to shop are limited. I wear my clothes until they wear out and hardly ever buy new clothes. I don’t have the money and find it hard to find something that suits.

This was amazing. I always seem to have the most trouble with my clothes wrinkling. I am very excited to try out your advice and see how they stand up against my clothes.

So thank you for this 🙂

– Sara

Time to remove or update this post. Cannot count how many times you said an item was discontinued and I wasted time trying to find the meat of this article.

Thanks for the feedback, Laura. I update this post regularly (which is why I discuss how items have been discontinued – that’s an update!) to show that I have owned and continue to own pieces over the long term – and how long they last, and what the various styles look like. If you click through to Anatomie, you’ll see they offer a ton of new styles, but overall their look is consistent. Also, I just checked all the links I provided – they are up to date!

The best lightweight, easy-care women’s travel dresses

best travel clothes over 60

As an over 60 woman, I plan my travel wardrobe around classic, easy-care items. I take inspiration from the French style of dressing, focusing on solid colors and a classic look in high quality pieces. I accent these with colorful scarves, jackets, and jewelry. A dress fits perfectly into this capsule. Designing your travel style around a simple dress is a great way to pack light and look great! I’ve tested some of the best women’s travel dresses and present my favorites here.

Table of Contents

Why pack a dress for travel?

I’m not your typical dress person. At home you’re more likely to find me in a great pair of jeans or workout wear. But when I’m planning a trip, I want to be ready for anything – museum visits, evenings out, and lots of walking. For me, one of the best options is a travel dress! On cruises, a dress is always on the list. (We don’t book anything that requires formal wear. It’s just not our thing.) On an active adventure where you’re in hiking or cycling clothes by day, it’s nice to have an option for something soft and pretty at night. And in a stretch, a dress can be worn as nightwear! That’s where dresses for travel come in!

As a woman over 60, I began traveling IN the sixties. My Dad wore three piece suits, and my mom and I wore dresses. Does that make me a travel dress expert?? No, but it does give me an appreciation for the functionality of dresses.

What makes a great travel dress?

Any piece that makes its way into our bag has to earn its place. Dresses are no exception. Here are our criteria for the perfect travel dress:

1. Packability – lightweight, wrinkle resistant

2. Versatility – I don’t pack anything that I can’t wear more than once. Clothing that has more than one good option is the best way to pack light. Choose a casual dress that can go from daytime touring to evenings out with an accessory or two. A dress that’s convertible gets extra points!

3. Low Maintenance/Ease of Care – who has time for doing laundry on vacation? A sink wash and air dry are usually the most we do on vacation.

4. Sustainable Quality – don’t be fooled by fast fashion. Invest in well made, classic items from ethical companies. Not only is this best for the planet, but it’ll save you money in the long run.

5. Comfort and Pleasure – (Probably the most important yet often forgotten criteria) Do I like how I feel in this dress? Does it work for my body type? Does it fit my personal style? Do I enjoy wearing it?

Save space by packing natural fiber clothing that can be worn multiple ways. Willow merino dress by wool&. #merinowool #travelclothing

Choose your color, a dress style you like, and fabric that travels well

Color . The foundation of the French woman’s style is the little black dress. This staple piece is simple yet classy and never goes out of fashion. When creating a French-inspired travel wardrobe , I start with a solid color dress – the base palette – and add color and patterns with other pieces and accessories. Parisian women may favor black as their base, but you should choose what’s best for you, and your skin tone. Navy blue, wine, or dark gray can be more flattering to women over 60. They certainly are for me.

Style . Your choice will depend on your signature style and your destination. Sleeveless styles are great for hot climates, and will work just as well in cold weather when you add layers! But some ladies prefer long sleeves. And some love maxi dresses! (though maxis will take up more luggage space!) Go with what makes you comfortable and what flatters your best features.

Travel dress - woman over 60 wearing a merino wool dress.

Fabric . To earn its place in your bag the dress (and every item really!) has to be lightweight and easy to care for. This is where the fabric choice comes in. For example:

  • Cotton is heavy, retains odors, and takes forever to dry.
  • Linen is wonderful, but wrinkles can be frustrating.
  • Synthetics are very lightweight, but can retain odors.

For ease of care and sustainability we recommend choosing natural fibers such as bamboo, Tencel, and wool for your travel clothing.

Bamboo is quickly becoming a popular material for travel clothing. It’s sustainable and odor resistant.

Merino wool has a natural warmth and resiliency not found in other textiles. Merino sheep, bred originally in Spain, have ultrafine wool which doesn’t provoke the itchy reaction some people experience with wool. AND it’s naturally odor resistant. That means you can wear a merino wool item over and over again, with only an overnight airing out!

Wool& Merino Wool Dresses

Rowena swing dress, price: $138 USD

  • Packability: 11 oz., wrinkle resistant.
  • Versatility: simple swing dress, but can be styled as a top or tunic
  • Ease of Care: fabric is 78% ultrasoft merino wool and 22% nylon
  • Quality: very well made
  • Comfort and Pleasure: temperature regulating, very comfortable, and has pockets!

I discovered Wool&, a small Oregon company producing merino wool clothing, through a Facebook ad. To prove the durability and natural odor resistance of merino wool, the company challenged people to wear their dress for 100 days straight. (I can’t imagine they expected this challenge to be so popular or to inspire an online community of women sharing the ups and downs of daily life over 100 days! No doubt the kindest group on social media!) Needless to say, given my interest in merino wool clothing, I was intrigued.

I base my capsule wardrobe on my favorite color, navy blue, so I opted for the Wool& signature item, the Rowena swing dress in marine blue. It’s a wonderful rich blue and I’m thrilled with the color. The dress has a boat neckline which is very flattering (and protective in the sunshine). As this is a swing dress, the body of the dress is loose, flowy, and flattering to my body shape. The material is light and lends itself to dozens of styling tricks and outfit ideas shared by the Facebook community. (There are many different colors available for this and other Wool& dresses)

My Wool& Review: Is this the best dress for traveling?

Styling a multiway travel dress as a tunic. Older woman in NYC

For the first month of the challenge, I played with the dress. I shopped my closet, pulling out long neglected items to pair with the dress. It was fun being creative with a simple piece of clothing, and truly surprising to pull out the dress each morning to find it as fresh as the day it arrived !

Then I got serious and began testing the dress for travel. I limited myself to a small capsule and worked on different outfits for different travel scenarios. First I wore the dress to my grandchild’s christening, and then another granddaughter’s lacrosse game. I wore it during zoom meetings, neighborhood clean-ups, and even for bike rides. The Wool& Rowena came through every time.

I had two opportunities to travel during this time – once to NYC for a fun weekend, and once to Texas for a sad event. The dress became my nightgown in Texas and gave me comfort.

Ease of Care: I aired out the dress every night – flipped it inside out and hung it over a bar. I sink-washed the dress six times and washed it in the washer once just to test durability. (I did use a lingerie bag) Day 100 the dress looked as fresh as on day 1.

Wool& offers several other travel dresses with pockets, including french terry dresses like the Sierra, a sleeveless option that’s very popular with travelers, the Everett, a tunic length sweater dress, and the Willow, a 3/4 sleeve swing dress with a V-neck.

Merino wool dresses are also offered by Icebreaker and Smartwool. Both brands produce quality goods so I’d feel confident ordering one of these if you find a style that suits you!

Amazon carries merino wool clothing at a more affordable price. I haven’t tried any of these so can’t speak to the quality. Let me know if you recommend them!

Best for a Special Event While Traveling

Chico's travelers collection includes many stylish dresses for travel all packable travel dresses.

Chico’s Travelers Collection – dresses

  • Price: ~$100-109 USD
  • Packability: wrinkle resistant
  • Versatility: n/a
  • Ease of Care: machine or sink wash
  • Fabric: 96% acetate, 4% elastane. From website: Our Travelers Classic collection contains Eastman Naia™, a sustainable cellulose fiber derived from wood pulp.
  • Comfort and Pleasure: stylish, and flattering. Fabric has a bit of stretch for extra comfort

These packable travel dresses would be perfect for date nights, a destination wedding or afternoon tea party . Chico’s designs these dresses for all but I think the dresses, with their simple lines and great style, appeal especially to mature women. I like the mid-length pencil skirt look, but Chico’s also has cocktail dresses.

I don’t own any of these gorgeous dresses above because I have another Chico’s dress, bought 10 years ago, that still looks great! It’s a floral print and always in my luggage if I want to add a beautiful dress to my bag!

Our Favorite Convertible Travel Dresses

Origami by Diane Kroe

Diane Kroe Origami travel dress. Best convertible dress for travel, truly a multiway travel dress

  • Price: $150 CAD
  • Packability: wrinkle resistant, but at 14.3 oz, not particularly lightweight
  • Versatility: converts to multiple new looks – dress, halter top, batwing top, skirt
  • Ease of Care: Dress is made from 92% poly and 8% spandex, so not a natural fabric, but it dries quickly and resists wrinkles.
  • Quality: well made in Canada
  • Comfort and Pleasure: stylish and extremely comfortable!

I’ve been a customer of Diane Kroe Designs for many years. I love the versatility of the collection. The Origami is one of my favorites. Usually I wear it as a top with skinny jeans or white pants, but I love having the option to wear it as a dress when traveling. This piece is great for older women travelers. The shape and drape are stylish and forgiving.

The main thing about convertible clothing is the style options while traveling. I’ve packed this dress specifically for special events but reached for it later in the trip as a light layer.

Best Dress for Sun Protection

Coolibar (Malta) Travel Shirt Dress –

Note: After first posting about this travel dress, the company kindly sent me one for review.

Price: $115 USD

Coolibar striped shirt dress for travel

  • Versatility: wear it as a shirt dress, an opened jacket, or tie the ends to make a cute button-down shirt.
  • Ease of Care: fabric is quick dry. Machine or hand wash in cold water,
  • Fabric: from the website: Antimicrobial fabric that is lightweight, breathable and soft to the touch. With 4-way stretch it is naturally wrinkle resistant and moisture wicking.
  • Comfort and Pleasure: a travel (and home!) classic style

What makes this a great choice? The Coolibar brand produces stylish clothing with sun protection – great for us older women! This shirt is rated UPF 50 and is breathable making it a great option for days of intense sun. The collar and cuffs can be adjusted to give maximum sun coverage.

Another great feature of the Malta is the hidden, zipped side pockets!

I was gifted the black version of the this dress. It is remarkably lightweight and cool. I wore it to a recent event – belted over leggings – and received lots of compliments!

Visit the Coolibar website for other dress styles for travel and sun protection .

Best of the rest: more suggestions for travel dresses

Athleta is one of my favorite brands for comfortable travel-friendly pants. I haven’t had the chance to try any of their dresses, but they offer several cute – short and sporty – dresses. You’ll find similar dresses at TitleNine.

For hard-working dresses suitable to many overseas trips check out Travelsmith, Magellan Travel Catalog, Lands End, L.L. Bean, and Orvis. These classic travel clothing companies will often have something that fits our easy-care, lightweight, wrinkle-free standards.

An option often offered in travel dresses is a reversible dress – pattern on one side and solid on the other. This might work for you, but I donated mine as it was too heavy. Some reversible dresses, like mine, are actually a two layer dress (a black sheath inside a patterned sheath). Thus the dress is heavier than a single layer dress.

A variant of the reversible dress that I do like is a dress with two necklines. Basically you can wear the dress back or front depending on the neckline you want. I love my Wool& Summer midi dress which has a high neckline and a v-neck neckline. This actually does give versatility to my travel wardrobe!

Have I convinced you to pack a dress for your travel?

Some last thoughts. The right dress can be endlessly useful during your travels. Wear it to a nice dinner? of course! But you can also wear it when you’re on a bus tour, for a hike in the mountains, and even sometimes as a workout tunic over exercise tights. (believe me. I’ve done it several times!)

Look in your closet first to see if there’s a dress that’ll be versatile, stylish, and easy care for your trip. If you need to buy a new dress find one that you can see wearing several times on your travels. Take some time before you leave to try the dress on, and play with accessories. That’s the best time to see if the dress deserves a place in your travel capsule wardrobe .

What do you think? Will a dress fit into your travel wardrobe?

Tip: for maximum comfort (and modesty) consider wearing leggings or bike shorts under your dress. I love my merino wool shorts by Wool& , Frankie Bike Shorts and Summit Shorts- both keep me fresh and comfortable and have pockets!

The best dresses for travel are lightweight, easy-care, and versatile. Choose merino wool for the ultimate travel dress. #travelstyle #traveldresses #merinowool ##womenoversixty

I’m about to embark on the Wool& 100 day challenge, and this post has me excited about all the possibilities! I’ve been interested in capsule wardrobes for a while. This might be my moment!

Oh my goodness! All the yesses!!!! I’ve done the challenge (in a Ro!) as well and am a full on convert to not only a merino wool fan but it has affirmed my love, desire, and need for a capsule wardrobe for every day and more.

I am finally getting to travel again soon and my Wool& dresses are all I’m planning on taking for core outfit pieces!

So, I have to ask, is the merino wool cool to wear? I am at the age where I am wearing t-shirts when everyone else is bundled up!

Yes! At least that’s my experience. The dress I purchased was long sleeved, and would not be ideal for a woman who’s usually hot. I have since purchased a sleeveless and short sleeved dress. Both wonderful on hot days.

Well I’ll definitely be reconsidering packing dresses in the future. Thanks!

🙂 Looking forward to seeing pictures of you in those dresses!

I’ve just purchased a SmartWool sleeveless dress for a trip to Italy, but don’t know about shoes. Was planning to take only athletic shoes for comfort but they don’t look good with the dress. Suggestions?

Loved your article and Wool&. What tool did you use to gather up the Rowena (one had the Rowena as a top, it looks as if it is plastic and round). Thanks for this article. I was looking for ways to elevate the styling of the dress.

Hi Joy, I use a scarf ring/loop I purchased from Amazon. I’m sure you can find one at a fabric store too!

Another trick you can use with either the scarf loop, or a smaller circular thing like a coin, is to place the loop either under or over the dress and gather the fabric around it with an elastic. It makes either a cute pucker or a button.

What to Look for When Choosing Travel Pants

When searching for the perfect travel pants, several key features can enhance your comfort and style on the road. Consider the following factors to ensure you find pants that meet the unique demands of travel:

Comfortable Fabric

Opt for breathable, stretchy fabrics that provide ease of movement. Materials like cotton blends, synthetic fabrics with stretch, or moisture-wicking materials are ideal for various climates and activities.

Wrinkle Resistance

Choose pants that resist wrinkles to keep you looking polished even after hours of wear or being packed in a suitcase. Wrinkle-resistant fabrics such as synthetic blends or certain cotton weaves can help maintain a neat appearance.

Versatility

Look for pants that can easily transition from casual to more formal occasions. Versatile styles can save space in your luggage and allow you to adapt to different settings without sacrificing comfort.

Functional Pockets

Ample, well-placed pockets are invaluable for storing essentials like a phone, passport, or small travel accessories. Pants with zippered or secure pockets can add an extra layer of security for your belongings.

Quick Drying

If you anticipate being in humid or wet conditions, quick-drying pants are a game-changer. Fabrics with moisture-wicking properties or those designed for fast drying will keep you comfortable in various climates.

Adjustable Features

Pants with adjustable waistbands or drawstrings offer flexibility in fit, accommodating changes in body shape due to different climates or culinary indulgences during your travels.

Opt for well-constructed pants with reinforced seams to withstand the rigors of travel. Durable materials will ensure your pants remain in good condition through multiple adventures.

Security Features

Some travel pants come with hidden or secure pockets, providing an added layer of protection for valuables. This feature can be particularly useful in crowded or unfamiliar settings.

By considering these factors, you can find travel pants that not only meet your comfort and functional needs but also enhance your overall travel experience.

I would deeply appreciate a clear indication of which products are made from natural materials and which add plastic or non-degradable materials to our environment. I believe many of us are more concerned with helping to stem the production of man made non-biodegradable materials that hurt our environment, than we are with avoiding wrinkles. Cotton is comfortable and durable.

The trend is here to stay, so why not shop the best?

You'll notice some classic names, like Lululemon and Nike , but we've also listed brands you might not think to shop from, like Spanx or Free People . Whether you're on the hunt for a matching set that makes you feel more put together while traveling, or a hoodie you can pair with leggings or jeans depending on the day, these brands offer a wide range of options.

Ready to find your new favorite yoga pants for coffee trips or an exercise dress to keep you cool during hot summer days? Clearly, athleisure items can be some of the most versatile pieces you own, so long as you shop with a few key factors in mind:

What to consider

While athletic clothes are probably some of the more casual items in your closet, a lot of popular brands list the lounge pieces surprisingly high. But thanks to the popularity of the style trend, we found brands at a range of price points and for every budget.

Size Ranges

The brands we've ranked highly have notably inclusive size ranges, including extended sizes, length options for pants and leggings, cup sizes for sports bras, and more. However, each brand offers different measurement ranges, so check the brand's guidelines before buying. Notably, Girlfriend Collective has the largest size range of our top brands, with leggings going from XXS up to 6XL.

How You'll Wear the Items

If you're looking to add pieces that double as workout gear, keep an eye out for fabrics that are moisture-wicking and breathable. Options like the Nulu fabric from Lululemon will be comfortable for low-impact workouts (think: yoga, Pilates, hot girl walks!). If you're looking for true loungewear that's more structured than your standard sweatpants, soft cotton and relaxed silhouettes will do the trick. Styles like Vuori's joggers still show off your frame, while being less compressive and restrictive than leggings.

How we chose

We shared our top 16 brands after polling our editors to find out which athleisure brands they love the most. Having tested a wide range of products over the years, we also included some of our editors' favorite pieces from each brand to help you get started shopping.

Lululemon is behind some of our editors' favorite leggings , but the brand offers more than just comfortable gear for workouts. You can shop loungewear, workwear, and chic outerwear too. The brand earned the spot as our best overall pick thanks to its versatile fabrics, flattering silhouettes, and versatility—Lululemon's site lists what each item was designed for, which makes it easy to shop for clothing that's for training, everyday wear, or both. It's also a great place to buy athleisure pieces that'll stand the test of time.

One of the best Amazon legging brands we've tested, Ewedoos, offers products that are affordable, moisture-wicking, and comfortable. Ewedoos offers a range of style options, from your classic leggings to trendy exercise dresses, tennis skirts, and flared leggings. Ewedoos pieces are often on sale, helping you save even more. Pro tip: Take advantage of fast Prime shipping when you shop this brand on Amazon.

Girlfriend Collective offers extended sizing for all collections and most pieces come in under $100. The high-waisted, squat-proof leggings hold up throughout workouts and provide just the right amount of coverage for pairing with crop tops and longline bras. The brand drops fun and trendy colors throughout the year (as an alternative to its classic neutrals), and has committed to sustainable and ethical standards in its fabrication and production process.

A celeb- and editor-loved brand, Alo Yoga always keeps up with the athleisure trends. You'll find city-inspired styles that are on the pricier side, but (in our opinion) worth the splurge. Our editors are fans of the staple pieces that leave us feeling more put together. Case in point: The Accolade Crew, which is easy to match with sweats or throw on with leggings before heading out to run errands. We've even styled the sweatshirt with a button-down underneath and trousers for the office.

This California coast-inspired brand is behind some of the softest leggings, joggers, and tees. We wouldn't recommend Vuori's pieces for intense, HIIT-style workouts, but for traveling, low-impact sessions, and lounging, they're some of our favorites. Vuori leans into simple, clean designs that are easy to style. The brand even has a handy travel style section on its site. Wash after wash, Vuori's fabrics maintain their softness and shape.

It's in the brand's name, but Beyond Yoga's pieces are thoughtfully designed for yoga practice and low-impact exercise. The spacedye leggings are one of the brand's bestsellers and are ultra soft and sculpting. We've found ourselves slipping into the buttery soft, four-way stretch fabrics for long walks, Sunday mornings at home, and Pilates class. Whether you're going to yoga or running errands, you'll appreciate these extremely cozy pieces. Beyond Yoga even has a handful of pieces designed to bring that comfort to your everyday closet.

For yoga, running, swimming, and lounging, Athleta has you covered with fairly affordable pieces that are great to wear during—and after—training. There are tons of fun colors to shop and the technical designs make these pieces ideal for working out, while still being comfortable enough for lounging. These Wayfinder shorts were designed with travel in mind—they're comfortable for walking around new cities and easy to style with tees, sweaters, or blouses. The shorts even have convenient zippered pockets for keeping your essentials safe.

Our editors love the fun cutouts, silhouettes, and colors of FP Movement. The products have a unique flair that sets them apart from other athleisure brands. Whether it's a strappy detail (like the one on the back of this exercise dress) or the bright color for a matching set, there's a wide range of unique elements to choose from. A host of designs come in a sculpting, stretchy, seamless fabric that's great for Pilates or yoga.

Odds are high you've seen 437's logos on TikTok, as the brand has become an influencer favorite, largely due to its cute and casual matching sets that make getting ready a little bit easier. You can also shop for separates that pair well with sweats or jeans. While 437 sticks to simple, solid colors that are easy to mix and match, it offers a range of styles—from sleek, body-contouring activewear to cozy, loose-fitting sweats.

We're fans of Gold Hinge's stylish, athletic pieces you can easily incorporate into your day-to-day wardrobe, like this quarter-zip tank. The brand is more affordable than some others on our list, and the versatility adds to the value. You'll find hoodies, leggings, exercise dresses, and more under for $100. Gold Hinge's styles are colorful and simple, but all stick to sporty silhouettes that give your lounge a polished look.

Forme

While Forme's popular Power Bra works perfectly under a tank or tee for a true athleisure look, the brand's posture-correcting item (you know it as the sports bra Taylor Swift wore while training for the Eras Tour) can also be worn under your most comfortable sweatshirt. Take advantage of the bra's posture benefits by day paired with a sweater or by night in your pajamas. And don't forget to shop Forme's range of athleisurewear—including leggings, tees, and even socks. Pieces are pricey, but we think worth it.

Spanx

Spanx's origins start in the shapewear department, and the brand's since brought its sculpting, compressive materials to athleisure. Shop flared leggings that give a bit of a boost to your booty and add tummy control for comfort. You'll also find traditional leggings, bike shorts, and workout dresses. The styles pair well with sweaters and tees for casual daytime looks. You can easily work them into your outside-of-the-house looks while feeling confident in the shapewear silhouettes.

Nike

It's no surprise Nike made this list, since the brand has been around for what feels like ages and has all of your sportswear needs covered, from head to toe (literally). The DRI-Fit sweat sets are easy to throw on after an intense workout, during your warm-up, or on WFH days when you want to be cozy. Whether you style it as a matching set or opt to pair the cropped crewneck with your favorite leggings, Nike is a one-stop-shop for your workout, lounge, and footwear needs.

Golden

Aritzia just launched its newest activewear brand, Golden. We've gotten our hands on some pieces and have been impressed by the high-quality, sleek, and easy-to-wear styles. The versatile items are buttery soft and come in under $100 for nearly every piece. The fashion brand blends its sleek, simple styles into its activewear line, which features leggings, onesies, tops, and bras. Details like princess seams and subtle ruching give the minimalist pieces added texture.

Outdoor Voices

Outdoor Voices

When exercise dresses skyrocketed in popularity, Outdoor Voices took the trend by storm. The brand has a handful of dress styles that are great for wearing on warm, summer days when you want something sweat-wicking, but sleek. You'll find a wide range of items from the brand beyond dresses, including hiking gear, workout attire, and more. Outdoor Voice's pieces feature clever designs that set them apart from the rest, like hidden pockets and strappy back details.

Year Of Ours

Year Of Ours

If you're a fan of colorful athleisure, look no further than Year Of Ours. The brand has hosts of matching sets, pants, tanks, and hoodies that'll add bold hues to your closet. The Year Of Ours has both solid and ribbed fabrics, so you have options, as well as a lineup of sweatpants that are easy to throw on for the gym or while traveling. Pro tip: It's fun to mix and match the sets.

line

Can you work out in athleisure?

Yes! The athleisure trend stems from workout clothes, so these pieces double as activewear. Of course, you'll want to check the fabrication details to make sure they meet your usual workout clothing expectations (are they sweat-wicking? breathable?). We recommend saving the thicker, cotton fabrics of sweatpants and hoodies for post-workout lounging, but leggings and crop tees are our go-tos for a sweat session.

"Therefore, getting fitted for undergarments is important rather than guessing the size, ensuring a better fit that will keep you comfortable all day or all night."</p>

1 Consider the fit.

At any age, your look is elevated when your clothes fit properly. But when you're over 60, making sure you have well-tailored, staple items is essential.

"Upgrade your wardrobe with well-fitting anchor staples like black trousers, a classic LBD [little black dress], and an all-purpose blazer that fit with precision," Kosich says. "Find a great tailor to alter your favorite pieces for fit and comfort, and consider tailoring new purchases to optimize fit if needed." Brigid Stasen , elite stylist at Bridge Your Style , says jeans are one area where fit is particularly important, as is the wash of the denim. She suggests skipping the tight skinny jeans ("unflattering on most of us") and instead opting for straight-leg or boot-cut styles in medium blue, dark blue, and white.

Stassen also stresses being mindful of owning properly fitting undergarments . "They provide consistent comfort and support and enhance confidence," she says. "Therefore, getting fitted for undergarments is important rather than guessing the size, ensuring a better fit that will keep you comfortable all day or all night."

Understanding travel insurance for seniors

Before diving into the specifics, it's essential to understand what travel insurance is and why it's particularly important for senior travelers. The best travel insurance offers financial protection against unexpected events affecting your trip, such as trip cancellations, medical emergencies, or lost luggage.

Types of coverage

  • Medical Coverage: Ensures your medical expenses are covered in case of illness or injury.
  • Trip Cancellation/Interruption Coverage: Provides reimbursement if your trip is canceled or cut short due to unforeseen events.
  • Baggage Coverage: Covers loss, damage, or theft of personal items during your trip.

Benefits of travel insurance for seniors

  • Peace of Mind: Knowing you're covered in case of emergencies can make your travel stress-free.
  • Financial Protection: Shields you from potentially overwhelming medical costs and trip cancellations fees.
  • Assistance Services: Many plans offer 24/7 assistance services, providing help whenever and wherever you need it.

Making the most of your plan

After choosing a plan, it's crucial to understand your policy fully and know what services are available to you in case of an emergency.

Understanding your policy

  • Read the fine print and understand the claims process to avoid surprises.

Emergency assistance services

  • Familiarize yourself with the emergency assistance services offered by your plan and keep all necessary contact information handy.

How to pick senior travel insurance

It's wise to compare several different travel insurance policies for the best coverage and pricing, as premiums vary widely between insurers and depend on factors like your age and travel destination.

That said, some of the more essential coverages to look for if you're a senior citizen include:

  • Travel medical coverage - This coverage will pay for your medical bills outside the US.
  • Medical evacuation coverage - If you're injured or become sick while traveling, this coverage will transport you to the nearest hospital or even back home if your condition necessitates it.
  • Preexisting conditions - Coverage for known health conditions. You'll need to purchase travel insurance within a certain time period from when you book your trip to qualify for a preexisting condition waiver .
  • Cancel for any reason (CFAR) - The name says it all! It'll cost extra and you'll need to purchase insurance early, but it's the most comprehensive trip cancellation coverage you can get. Note that CFAR insurance usually only covers up to 75% of your trip fees.
  • Trip cancellation insurance - This coverage provides reimbursement for your prepaid and nonrefundable costs if you cannot make your trip due to an unforeseen event.
  • Baggage delay insurance - This coverage will reimburse you for essentials like toiletries and clothes if your bags are delayed.
  • Lost luggage insurance - This coverage will reimburse you up to a specified amount if your bags get lost en route.

Of these, the most critical to note are whether or not your policy covers preexisting conditions and the limits for travel medical insurance and emergency medical evacuation.

Some insurance companies offer a waiver that will cover preexisting conditions. You'll have to follow the requirements for adding a waiver to your policy, like insuring the entire cost of your trip. Or purchase the policy within a specific time after making your first trip deposit payments.

You'll also want to find a policy with high maximum limits for travel medical and emergency medical evacuation coverage. These types of expenses can be substantial, so you want to have appropriate coverage.

When comparing senior travel insurance options, we looked at the following factors to evaluate each travel insurance provider:

  • Coverage limits: We looked at each travel insurance company's coverage amounts for benefits like medical emergencies and trip cancellation.
  • Flexibility: We looked at how customizable a policy is, so you can choose what your travel insurance policy covers .
  • Coverage for preexisting conditions: Preexisting conditions are one of the more critical factors for travel insurance for senior citizens, so we looked at travel insurance companies that offer the best coverage for preexisting conditions.
  • Price: We compared travel insurance providers offering reasonable basic and comprehensive coverage rates.
  • Benefits geared towards seniors: We compared travel insurance companies that offer solid coverage for senior citizens, like medical evacuation, COVID-19 coverage, and trip cancellation.

You can read more about our insurance rating methodology here.

Seniors should look for travel insurance policies that offer comprehensive medical coverage, including for preexisting conditions and emergency medical evacuation. They should also consider policies with higher coverage limits to ensure adequate protection. Additionally, seniors should seek travel insurance plans that provide 24/7 assistance services, as well as coverage for trip cancellations, interruptions, and baggage protection.

The cost of senior travel insurance coverage can vary depending on your age, overall health, state of residence, travel destination, and length of your trip. However, assuming all other factors are the same, you'll pay more for travel insurance at 70 than at 30.

All travel insurance companies, except World Nomads, included in this guide offer coverage for pre-existing medical conditions as long as you buy your policy within the qualifying period from when you placed your trip deposit.

Allianz is the best travel insurance for seniors due to its wide array of medical coverages and emergency medical transport. Allianz also offers multi-trip insurance policies , which could make sense for seniors who travel frequently.

In some instances, travel insurance companies will have age eligibility restrictions, often only insuring people 80 years old and younger.

Our Favorite Flared Alo Yoga Pants Are 30 Percent Off

Portrait of Katherine Gillespie

If you (like me) are wary of wearing leggings out in public, then flared yoga pants might be the answer. They’re soft and stretchy enough to exercise in, but the extra bagginess around the knee means that you can definitely throw a T-shirt over top and call it an outfit. Of all the flared and bootcut styles I’ve tried, Alo’s are the best. And they’re 30 percent off today as part of the brand’s rare sitewide sale.

What I especially like about these pants is that they’re made with Alo’s matte Airbrush fabric, which looks and feels like cotton. (Why aren’t more yoga pants matte? An open question to all the athleisure brands out there.) Unlike High Sport pants and their various dupes , these are full-length, which in my opinion makes them easier to style — you can wear any type of sock underneath, for example. And they’re simply very comfortable and flattering, whether you’re heading to the Pilates studio or the coffee shop.

Picking your travel uniform is one of the most important parts of trip planning. You need apparel that can handle a lot of walking, sitting, and sprinting (for those close layovers), and is equally comfortable. Long days in transit mean cozy clothes are a necessity.

We sifted through dozens of brands, styles, customer reviews, and tried and true styles to find the best gear for your suitcase. From shirts to socks, we’re confident these clothes will keep you looking and feeling your best wherever your travels take you.

Best Long-sleeve Shirt

Cuts ao long sleeve curve-hem tee.

Its simple look makes it wearable in just about every setting.

It runs small, so double-check the sizing guide.

The bestselling long-sleeve shirt from Cuts Clothing is made of a buttery-soft performance blend that has a four-way stretch and doesn’t pill. Designed in the brand’s signature fit, the AO Long Sleeve is meant to help you look good at all hours of the day — fitted around the chest with a slimming profile through the waist. Its curve-hem cut sits comfortably below the hip, so you don’t have to worry about it bunching up or your skin showing. A hint of stretch means the shirt will move with you as you reach into the overhead compartment or run through the airport terminal.

Its pre-shrunk fabric lets you easily throw it into the wash with your other laundry worry-free. The wrinkle resistance ensures a clean look, even after it’s been packed in your carry-on or backpack. We also love the color options – classic black and white, along with muted pastels – to ensure you’ll find a shade to pair with any outfit.

The Details: S to XXL | 62 percent polyester, 33 percent cotton, 5 percent spandex

Best Collared Shirt

Ministry of supply apollo raglan sport shirt.

Ministry of Supply

This shirt looks like a standard raglan, but has wrinkle-free fabric great for commuting.

It fits better untucked than tucked.

Ministry of Supply, the innovative apparel brand known for its materials derived from NASA technology, delivers a classy but comfortable option with the Apollo Raglan Sport Shirt. Made with a signature performance fabric, this shirt is 19 times more breathable than traditional woven fabric and offers next-level temperature control — great for long days on the road.

It’s naturally wrinkle-resistant, so caring for it is easy. Simply throw it in the washing machine – no dry cleaning or ironing needed. Its front pocket offers a professional touch and extra storage for AirPods or loose change. Be sure to reference their sizing guide as this shirt tends to run small.

The Details: XS to 3XL | 54 percent polyester, 46 percent propriety-treated polyester

Best T-shirt

Rhone element tee.

It’s fitted, but not too tight.

You may experience some fit issues with the neckline.

This basic tee from Rhone makes for reliable everyday wear. Its organic cotton blend is soft and stretchy, while also incorporating the brand’s signature anti-odor technology (especially handy if you’ll be in warmer climates during your travels). Pairing well with shorts or pants, the Element Tee is available in a crewneck or V-neck and a wide variety of colors. This staple shirt is perfect for no-fuss packing; stuff a few in your backpack and you’ll have style for days. Follow the care instructions when cleaning because the organic cotton can shrink — the brand recommends washing the shirt on a cold setting.

The Details: S to XXL (most colors) | 70 percent cotton, 23 percent polyester, 7 percent spandex

Best Sweater

Nadaam the original cashmere men's sweater.

You can personalize it with a monogram.

It runs small.

Most people love a good cashmere sweater, but no one loves taking care of a good cashmere sweater. Durable and cashmere don’t naturally go together, after all. However, the Original Cashmere Sweater from Nadaam combines 100 percent cashmere luxury with the low-maintenance ease of cotton. The ribbed collar and cuffs won’t stretch out with wear, making it a safe bet for cashmere fanatics who are always on the go. It comes in over 10 core colors (plus limited-edition colors every season) and best of all, it’s less than $100. It’s also machine washable (lay flat to dry) — making for one of the most durable cashmeres for travel we’ve seen.

The Details: XXS to XXL | 100 percent cashmere

Best Jacket

Nomatic the outset jacket.

It has a full set of comprehensive features that make it ideal for hours of transit.

It’s not made for extremely cold weather.

From popular travel brand Nomatic, The Outset Jacket offers as much functionality as their bags and luggage. This lightweight jacket has four-way stretch, breathability, and a water-, stain-, and wrinkle-resistant fabric. Perforated armpits provide extra airflow for when you’re rushing from place to place. The hood adjusts to your preference and the whole jacket can be folded into a small travel pillow for when you need to catch up on sleep during a flight. With pockets on the left chest, inside the zipper, and fleece-lined hand pockets, you’ll have plenty of space for your passport, wallet, and other essentials.

The Details: S to XXL | 100 percent polyester (primary body); 85 percent nylon, 15 percent spandex (secondary body)

Best Peacoat

Alo wool gameday overcoat.

It’s simple, while still making a fashion statement.

It’s only 25 percent wool, so peacoat purists may prefer other materials.

Great styles from rapidly growing yoga brand Alo aren’t a surprise at this point, but the Wool Gameday Overcoat is nothing short of timeless. It has a relaxed fit, ideal for layering, and comes in black, heather gray, and a limited-edition camel colorway that looks straight out of a fashion magazine. It has all the classic peacoat features like a waist belt, notched lapels, and a front button to hold it all together. Its wool blend fabric sits right in the middle of the warmth spectrum — it’ll keep you warm, but won’t overheat you. But be sure you’re ready to make the investment, the Gameday Overcoat will set you back well over $300.

The Details: XS to XXL | 50 percent polyester, 25 percent wool, 20 percent viscose

Comrad Combed Cotton Crew Socks

They work for any activity, including workouts, so you won’t need to change for different settings.

There’s not much compression in the ankle.

Frequent travelers would be hard-pressed to find a better pair of socks for the road. The Combed Cotton Crew Socks feature cushioning in the spots that get the most impact when walking, like the heels, balls of your feet, and toes. A snug fit at the ankles and calf help them stay in place and the compression band ensures your arches will get the support they need when the days (or flights) get long. The classic crew length will pair well with sneakers or dress shoes, and the combed cotton is cozy and breathable.

The Details: S to XL | 65 percent cotton, 30 percent nylon, 5 percent spandex

Best Sneakers

New balance men's 574 core sneaker.

New Balance

It’s extra versatile and pairs well with many outfits.

The mesh upper is susceptible to getting dirty.

The New Balance 574 is the epitome of a classic sneaker. While it looks good, the real magic is in the thick cushioning. This sneaker was built to be versatile. The mesh upper offers breathability and the rugged sole provides traction for brisk walking and even light jogs if you forget your usual running shoes and want to exercise away from home. Its padded collar and tongue is supportive, and it's available in a wide range of colorways so you’re sure to find a pair that suits you.

The Details: 4 to 18 | Suede and mesh upper, polyester components, rubber outsole

Everlane The Slim 4-Way Stretch Organic Jean

They offer both function and style.

They can be skinny in the thighs.

If you love jeans but don’t like the time and effort that comes with breaking them in, Everlane’s stretch jeans feel great right out of the box while still boasting that classic look you’re after. The organic Turkish cotton is dyed sustainably using an innovative method that reduces water consumption by 55 percent.

The brand offers four different shades of blue and two shades of black and they look good cuffed or uncuffed, meaning you’re never short on versatility. Ringing up at an affordable price point, you may even want to buy a few pairs in different colors. Best of all, they’re backed by Everlane’s 365-day guarantee — if anything happens to them, they’ll replace your pair.

The Details: Various waists and lengths | 94 percent cotton, 2 percent elastane, 4 percent other fiber

Best Joggers

Vuori sunday performance jogger.

The additional front and back zipper pockets are great for extra storage.

They’re lightweight, so not meant for extremely cold climates.

The Sunday Performance Jogger is our top pick for travel joggers for its technical fabric, fit, and features. While the tech specs are impressive, what’s more impressive is just how soft they are from the very first wear. The material is a polyester-elastane blend that is breathable, warm, and suited for high-paced movement or just relaxing on the couch. They feature a tapered leg with elastic cuffs, making them flattering for most body types. For trips, we love the zipper pockets on the left thigh and back that make stowing our valuables easy. The elastic waistband and drawcord make the fit adjustable — perfect for when you’ve just finished wolfing down a local delicacy and need some extra waist space.

The Details: XS to XXL | 88 percent polyester, 12 percent elastane

Best Chinos

Bonobos original stretch washed chino 2.0.

You can pick from a wide range of colors and fits.

The length is only available in 2-inch increments.

A good pair of chinos can replace almost all of the pants you would normally pack on a trip, whether it’s for work, pleasure, or both. Bonobos made a name for itself with its popular chinos and then leveled up, dropping this updated version that is perfect for when you want a comfortable pair of pants, but don’t want to commit to fully “performance” materials. They’re made of non-iron, four-way stretch cotton that also wicks moisture. With quality accents, different fit options, and a multitude of colors, you’ll look so stylish your fellow passengers won’t even realize how comfortable you are. An extra zip pocket is discreet — perfect for your most valuable possessions.

The Details: Various waists, fits, and lengths available | 92 percent cotton, 8 percent spandex

Best Shorts

Lululemon t.h.e. linerless short 7”.

It has a slim profile, unlike baggy basketball shorts.

It’s not the best option if you prefer shorts with a liner.

Lululemon’s T.H.E. Linerless Short 7” is a do-it-all short for training, chilling, and walking. Designed with workouts in mind (T.H.E stands for “train hard every day”), these shorts are made of an extremely lightweight fabric that stretches with you and is immensely breathable. Pockets on both sides plus an additional zipper pocket provide ample storage. We love that these shorts don’t have a liner — busy days of travel often call for changing bottoms, so shorts that don’t require undergarments can become more of an annoyance than a convenience. They come in six neutral colors and if you prefer longer shorts, there’s also a 9-inch version.

The Details: S to XXL | 86 percent polyester, 14 percent elastane

Best Underwear

Jack archer jetsetter boxer briefs.

Jack Archer

The signature modal fabric is three times as soft as Pima cotton.

They’re a bit expensive for a single pair of underwear.

We’ve seen few briefs that offer as many options as Jack Archer’s Jetsetter Boxer Briefs. Whatever your preference is, be it mid-length, long, or short, you’re sure to find an option that’s perfect for you. The flat waistband won’t curl up and the compression fabric stays in place, but isn’t too tight. Anti-odor material ensures you’ll be fresh all day, a must for when you’re going from place to place. Every detail was thought out, with soft threads that won’t irritate your skin. Plus, all of those performance features mean you don’t have to worry about overpacking — these briefs can go the distance if need be (but please do change into a new pair every day!).

The Details: S to XXL | 92 percent proprietary modal, 8 percent elastane

Best Swimsuit

Fair harbor the anchor.

Fair Harbor

The prints and patterns are fun and unique.

The sizing can be hit or miss.

The Anchor Short from Fair Harbor offers an athletic fit with a signature non-mesh liner. Swimmers everywhere rejoice: no more chafing. The fabric is water-repellent and dries quickly. With plenty of design options, you could take these from a pool party to cocktail hour and still look fashionable.

Made with recycled polyester, Fair Harbor uses 12 recycled water bottles for each pair in the manufacturing process. Preppy nautical designs don’t need to be reserved for summer getaways to the Hamptons or Martha’s Vineyard – with the Fair Harbor Anchor trunks, you’ll also feel right at home in Cancun or floating in your local river.

The Details: S to 3XL | 88 percent recycled polyester, 12 percent spandex

Best Hoodie

Buck mason hooded sweatshirt.

The 322-GSM (grams per square meter) French terry offers a soft but strong touch.

It’s not fleece lined, like a lot of hoodies.

It’s hard to find a more timeless top than Buck Mason’s Brush Loopback Hooded Sweatshirt. Modeled after collegiate sportswear of years past, you’d be hard-pressed to come up with a better vintage rendition, even from the titans of sports apparel.

It has a classic, easy-wearing fit with thick drawcords and a large kangaroo pocket that’ll fit your hands, phone, and keys. Reinforced elbows ensure this hoodie will last through years of friction so you can feel confident packing it trip after trip without worrying about needing to repair it. Match it with a pair of sweatpants or jeans and you’ll be ready for a cozy takeoff.

The Details: XS to XXL | 100 percent cotton

Best Dress Shoes

Amberjack the original.

They're available in many different shades of brown.

They may be too sporty-looking for truly formal occasions.

Dubbed as “The World’s Most Advanced Dress Shoes,” Amberjack’s The Original packs in a whole lot of features without sacrificing the clean look you’d expect from a standard dress shoe. An A-grade leather upper combined with a dual-density outsole and heel support make these especially good for business travel, whether that means long days on your feet or long hours in an airplane middle seat.

Once you reach your destination, if you find yourself going from meeting to meeting, you’ll definitely appreciate the sneaker-like comfort that these provide. Made in one of Portugal’s top factories, finding shoes this nice at a lower price would be nearly impossible.

The Details: 7 to 15 | Leather, sheepskin, thermoplastic polyurethane

Best Sandals

Birkenstock atacama birko-flor.

Birkenstock

It incorporates all the things that make Birkenstock iconic into a performance sandal that's great for motion.

They have velcro straps rather than the typical pin buckles Birkenstock is known for.

Birkenstock is synonymous with sandals for good reason. Because leather sandals may not be the most comfortable for covering the high walking mileage that comes with travel, the brand’s Atacama Birko-Flor is our pick for the best travel sandal (though you can’t go wrong with the brand’s Bostons or Arizonas , either).

Made with a proprietary synthetic upper, the hook-and-loop straps won’t be abrasive on your skin, even as the days grow long. Their polyurethane (PU) sole and footbed provide enough bounce for guys spending all day on their feet. Plus, as with all their models, the brand has incorporated its signature footbed shape for support in the areas your feet need it most, from heel to toe and everywhere in between.

The Details: 6 to 13.5 (batched sizing) | Synthetic leather, PU

Tips for Buying Men’s Travel Clothes

Prioritize versatility.

When you’re on the road, your bag will only hold so much. So when you’re choosing what to wear on a trip, be it for work or vacation, pick apparel and accessories that you’ll be able to wear more than once.

In an ideal world, you could rock the same shoes every day and rotate a couple of pairs of pants, plus a tee or two. If you need more than that, think about how you can optimize your travel space, whether that means wearing your suit trousers on travel days or relying on your favorite hoodie for workouts and colder days at the office.

Consider care instructions

If you’ve ever traveled for more than a day or two, you’ll know that sometimes you need to do laundry while you’re out on a trip. Bring apparel that is either easy to wash or doesn’t need to be washed frequently.

Prioritize performance fabrics that are moisture-wicking and antimicrobial to keep sweat and stink at bay. Undershirts you can wear more than once and socks that don’t pick up a stench after a few hours will come in clutch.

Choose your materials carefully

Much like the specifics of caring for your clothes on the road, you will want to focus on the materials your clothes and accessories are made out of. Merino wool, for example, can go much longer without getting smelly than Dri-Fit and other similar performance materials. A cotton hoodie may be good for the first few days but lose some steam when the trip gets long.

Also, make sure you wear clothes that are comfortable during transit. Linen is an ideal material for wearing on an airplane or in a car because the nappy, wrinkly look comes naturally — nobody will question your linen suit for its wrinkles because they’re supposed to be there.

You want to dress for comfort without looking like a slob. Think flexible, stretchy pants and a well-fitting crewneck sweatshirt or your favorite pair of jeans paired with a vintage blazer. Both outfits will look great but will keep you comfortable throughout the journey. Consider adding compression socks to help reduce swelling in the feet and legs on long flights.

Like we mentioned, think about pairing some broken-in jeans with a comfy, roomy blazer or pick up a nice pair of joggers that don’t leave you looking like you just hopped out of bed. Make sure your clothes fit comfortably and correctly, then decide what materials will hold up to the rigors and constant movement that comes with travel.

For long-term travel, or even a two-week jaunt to a warm climate, you’ll want to figure out which services you’ll have at your disposal when it comes to cleaning your clothes. Some places offer complimentary dry cleaning and washer/dryer service, but most places will have you searching for quarters and a laundromat. Just do a bit of research before you head out and pack accordingly. Heading on a week-long trip with no washer? Pack your bags full of socks and underwear. Headed to a five-star resort? You can be a bit more economical when packing.
