Quality recommendations for travel cases, rolls, pouches

What are you using for travel? Im looking for options for 3 or less watches, quality made and functions well. And how many watches do you usually travel with?  

I have a couple of the Breitling single watch travel cases and a generic two watch case of similar style, that I got on Amazon. They work great packed inside a suitcase. How many to take depends on trip length and what I'll be doing. The ability to take 0-4 plus the one on my wrist has always worked for me. Wayne  

I bring 2-3 total, wear 1 on the plane. I have both a Squale and Farer travel cases that came with my purchases, or I'll wrap one in a sock in my carry-on. I like the look of the pod cases if packing 1-2. Seem like decent protection and standard size for reasonable prices. Big fan of rolls if you aren't packing bracelets. I don't have a specific recommendation as I haven't bought either. The Nick Mankey rolls are top of my list, but I haven't seen one in stock for 2 years... The hexagon pillow 3's from C&B or Delugs would be my high quality purchase if I could justify the price. As it is, those cost as much or more than the watches I bring usually. So unlikely to get either.  

Bosphorus, Everest, Carapaz. These are not inexpensive, but they are considered the best quality. They can also take the place of a box at home.  

My Unimatic came with a 2 slot, small, Pelican style case. I just use that. Sure, it is larger than a sleeve or roll but there is also zero chance anything inside is getting messed up. Small Pelican cases can be had used, with foam, for less than some people want for a roll.  

I'm with you. Take three, always wearing one of those. I haven't traveled recently, so as yet I've not yet picked up any travel case(s). But I saw some rolls posted (Amazon?) on one of these watch sites. They were not expensive. But I like the fact that they'd work just as well for a bracelet as a strap. It seems you don't need to spend much to 'secure' your watches while on the road.

My 'go to' was wrapped in sock in a Crown Royal bag in my shave kit. Never had a problem! Note: They were never in a bag I checked.  

Smaller Pelican cases for me. Mobile and they offer the watches good protection as well.  

I use my wrist, and on the rare occasion I take another watch I just place in socks or something soft and make sure it's not going to be tossed around.  

I use a nice watch roll from Wolf: Heritage Watch Roll .. I bought in a Reddit and costed me less than $70, amazing quality for a reasonable price to keep my watches safe..

My wife and I both have the single watch WATCHPOD case for travel. I only like to travel with two watches, one worn and a spare. But they do offer a two-watch case too. The Cheopz. This is it. I mentioned here earlier a slick watch case via Amazon. It wasn't crazy expensive and looked effective. $17.00 for a 'single' is all. Thanks, Orive8.  

Some good vendors on Etsy offer nicely made ones as well.  

I used to use socks, until I somehow got sock lint under the crystal. More than once. I don't do that anymore. If you are going to use socks, I suggest putting the watch in a little plastic sandwich bag, and then that in the sock.  

Don't forget the Crown Royal bag...  

The Oakley watch cases were the best but were discontinued years ago. They had small and large sizes. It' selling for $55 + shipping on the bay now lol I buy CASEBUDi from Amazon nowadays.  

Another Amazon Cheopz here...provide good protection, there are ome sponges inside to prevent the watch moves around.

Tips for Buying Watch Travel Cases

Pick the best size for your needs.

Not all luggage is created equally — and buying even smaller accessories such as watch travel cases should be relevant to your particular needs. You’ll want to consider how many watches a case can carry and how much room it will take up in your luggage (which might relate to how protective it is). Don’t go larger than you need to, but be careful not to get something too small to fit your timepieces.

Consider adding security and other special features

Depending on your specific needs, the value of the watches you’re trying to protect, and the budget you’re set aside for a case, there are a range of added features available. You may want to look for a travel case that is lockable, so you can leave your watches with confidence if they’re beyond your reach while you’re in transit. Other features to consider are how discreet the watch case looks; if the worst happens and someone breaks into your luggage, you may not want a case that overtly screams, “Expensive watches in here!” Going for something a little more understated could therefore be its own form of security.

This is probably a bigger answer than you’d expect. Yes, cases keep the elements away from your watch and, in many instances, offer waterproof protection, impact protection, or, at a minimum, scratch resistance from other items in your luggage. But watch cases also offer a degree of security. Some can be locked, or easily tucked away in your luggage, so you can travel with confidence knowing that your watch is staying put as you reach your final destination.

The difference between a watch travel case and a watch roll is exactly what it sounds like — watch rolls store your watch in a rolled-up shape that mimics the shape of a human wrist. For more complicated and expensive watches, it can be better to store your watches in a rolled-up shape, which protects the structural integrity of the wrist band, and prevents the sliding and bunching which can sometimes happen in flat travel cases.

Care depends on the material of the watch travel case itself. Most cases are made from durable materials which can be cleaned with a soft cloth, or in some instances, a barely damp soft cloth. If your watch travel case is made from leather, you’ll also want to follow the manufacturer’s instructions for leather care (such as conditioning periodically) so that it lasts for many adventures to come.

It’s all in the details. Some basic travel cases are little more than a nylon envelope with a zipper whereas others have design details such as magnetic flap closures, hand stitching, Italian leather, or hidden compartments to carry small accessories or watch repair tools. But just because a travel case is more expensive doesn’t necessarily mean it will protect your timepieces any better than a less expensive model; read the product descriptions closely to see what kind of features your watch case includes.

What’s the difference between the options you have for carrying watches? It’s pretty straightforward. Watch rolls are relatively compact and they, well, roll right up to secure your watches from most risks they might face when traveling. What they don’t do is provide a hard outer shell that would protect a watch from pressure if it were, say, stored with other bags on top of it or which might shift around. Or if someone sat on your bag with your watch roll inside. Pouches offer similar considerations as rolls.

That said, watch rolls and pouches are usually more than sufficient, especially if you pack them carefully. Cases, on the other hand, do offer stiff material to protect watches from any such pressure. This is probably what you want if you’re carrying around delicate, high-value watches — though hard cases do tend to take up more room in your luggage that could be used for hotel soap.

What to Look for in Your Watch Travel Solutions

In addition to the above considerations, there are a few things you’ll want to look for in any solution for helping you travel with your watches. You’ll obviously take note of how many watches you can carry at once, but if you’ve got big watches, also pay attention to whether or not they’ll fit. Thick watches might not fit into pouches (including those in watch rolls) and they might make cases hard to close. Wide watches might cause similar issues. If you can’t tell from the specs or info offered by the seller, it’s advisable to ask.

Materials are another factor. These can affect everything from durability to style and even weight — the latter of which is always relevant to travelers. At the lower end of the spectrum, you really just need something utilitarian and hopefully durable. When you’re paying more money, though, you’re going to want to know that you’re getting nice materials and workmanship — depending on your budget you might want to look for real leather with nicer treatments, as opposed to the “PU” (for polyurethane, also known as “pleather”) often found on more affordable options.

Top 3 Best Travel Cases for Rolex and Other Luxury Watches

I don’t just write about watches; like you, I genuinely love my watch collection. But when I started my collection, I ran into some problems that should sound familiar to any watch collector. Most travel cases have a little bit of extra space inside, which allows the watch to shift when the case is handled. You put your watch in the case, stick it in your luggage… and when you take it out, your bracelet or crystal is scratched.

As a novice collector, I was willing to put up with this. If we’re being honest, I didn’t have a choice. Fitment is a universal problem with affordable travel cases, and if I wanted to spend money on a more expensive case, it would set me back on my next watch purchase!

But when I bought my Rolex air-king in 2015 , I knew I had a real investment piece. This watch required a reliable travel case that wouldn’t scratch the crystal or case. That’s why I founded WATCHPOD® – a watch accessories brand specializing in the safe transportation and storage of watches.

Of course, there are many other companies producing their own watch cases. Here are my thoughts on the best.

1.  WATCHPOD® Travel Cases

Obviously, I’m biased. But I personally think WATCHPOD® Travel Cases are the best on the market. They’re designed by the team here at watchreviewblog.com, and are already used by collectors from around the world. But don’t take my word for it. WATCHPOD cases have been featured in the New York Times and Quill and Pad , and were ranked #1 by Gear Patrol .

What makes WATCHPOD cases unique is their design. Traditional travel cases are built like display cases. There’s a padded roll or block where you affix the watch as if you were putting it on your wrist, and a cover closes down over the front. To better protect your watch, a WATCHPOD case is shaped like a flat donut. The outer shell is rigid, and the inner surface is entirely padded. The top and the bottom are cushioned with soft, thick foam, and there’s a zipper closure on the outside.

The concept is simple. Instead of putting your watch inside like a display case, you lay it on its side. When you zip the case shut, the foam in the top and bottom entirely surrounds your watch. This allows you to use it with any watch of any size. Even tiny, jewelry-style watches won’t shift around when the case is handled. At the same time, the foam is accommodating enough to fit even the largest of watches.

Here’s the thing; a travel case is not a display case, and they don’t need to share the same design philosophy. A display case is designed for displaying your watch at home. You want it to look nice, especially if you enjoy showing off your collection. Since it’s not going to get jostled around a lot, protection is a secondary concern.

A travel case, on the other hand, is designed first and foremost to keep your watch safe. It doesn’t matter how “nice” it looks if your Rolex gets scratched inside. Besides which, it can be wise to avoid a luxury leather travel case. Those cases scream “expensive,” and can leave you vulnerable to theft.

To that end, WATCHPOD travel cases are designed to look as nondescript as possible. The stiff outer shell is made from plain black 1680 denier nylon or brown faux leather. At a glance, it looks like an oversized earbud case – not exactly a juicy target for thieves. That said, the material is all but slash-proof, and would be very difficult to cut intentionally, much less by accident. It’s also water-repellant, although water will soak in if it’s fully immersed.

The best thing about this material, though, is that it’s crush-proof. You don’t have to worry about damaging your watch while you shove it into your overstuffed suitcase. Meanwhile, the soft interior is as gentle as a polishing cloth.

The original WATCHPOD was designed for a single watch, but we’ve now created larger 2- and 3-watch versions. These versions are only available in black for now, but stay tuned!

All in all, this is the best choice for Rolex collectors because of its superior protection. Your watch won’t move around inside the case, and the hard shell will keep your investment safe. It’s compact, it’s portable, and it costs less than you’d spend on lunch at a restaurant. And with its discreet design, it’s unlikely to attract thieves.

That said, I’ve listened to my customers, and apparently watch collectors really, really like leather cases. To that end, WATCHPOD will be rolling out a new premium line with the same basic design but a suede or leather shell. Unfortunately, supply chain issues have put this on hold for the time being.

2024 Update on WATCHPOD® Travel Cases

Bosphorus Leather is well-known for their premium, handmade leather cases. Founded by master leatherworker Adam Arslan, all of their cases are made by hand by seasoned artisans. As you might expect, these cases are anything but cheap! But any time you buy something that’s not mass-produced, you can expect to pay a premium.

Bosphorus Leather manufactures a variety of watch cases, from single-watch travel cases to large display cases. Not long ago, I reviewed their Saffiano Dark Brown case , which holds a whopping 10 watches. You can order the same case with up to a 15-watch capacity. But most people will want one of Bosphorus’ smaller cases when they’re going on the road.

Make no mistake; these are premium cases. The craftsmanship is outstanding, and you can order multiple colors and designs. The cases also mostly bridge the gap between display cases and travel cases, since they won’t allow your watch to wiggle around. Then again, there’s a major downside; they’re expensive and obvious, making them a target for theft when traveling.

2024 Update on Bosphorus Leather Cases

They’re crafted from high-quality leather, with very soft Ultrasuede inner lining and secure chrome-finished snap closures. Better yet, you can order them for one to three watches, so you’re not limited to taking just your favorite.

This is classic luxury at a reasonable price, but it does have a couple of downsides. While the design isn’t “fancy” enough to attract thieves, it’s unimaginative. The cases are literally cylinders, with no extra features or flourishes. Furthermore, the closures aren’t very intuitive. If you somehow manage to get them wrong, your watch can wiggle around and end up getting scratched. If you’re going to go this route, make sure you’re familiar with the closure before you actually use the case.

I am puzzled by your choice. I also have a collection of watches and don’t know where to put them when they’re out of the safe. Not in 15 boxes it’s far too bulky and not travel friendly. I think the best option would a flat pouch preferably zipped and lined in soft fabric or suede. This pouch would absolutely not roll because that’s impractical when storing watches especially the bulky ones. Any idea? Thanks.

What about my choices are puzzling you? Our Watchpod travel case is designed specifically for travel and storage. It stops any movement of the watch inside the case, it’s compact, protective, and quite importantly it’s under the radar when travelling. I’ve personally been using them for over 8 years now (since our founding in 2015) and they’ve been extremely convenient for me. If you’re planning on travelling with 15 watches this requires a custom solution and is not and everyday situation for many collectors. Cheers!

What Happens if It’s Cloudy During an Eclipse?

T oday, crowds will flock into cities like Indianapolis, Cleveland, and Dallas for a chance to view a total solar eclipse, a rare event which occurs when the moon completely covers the sun for a few short minutes.

There is one factor that could complicate the experience for eclipse watchers: clouds. Cloudy skies are known to dull the effects of total eclipses, making them less dramatic. That could spoil a celestial event people in the U.S. won’t get to see again for two decades.

But that doesn’t mean you should give up altogether if the area you plan on viewing the eclipse from has a cloudy weather forecast. 

Here’s what happens if the eclipse occurs on a cloudy day—and how to try to maximize your viewing experience.

What to expect during a cloudy total solar eclipse

“If you are under the clouds, it’s still going to get dark,” says veteran solar eclipse traveler and expert Patricia Reiff. Reiff is a professor of physics and astronomy at Rice University, and over the course of her career she has seen 20 eclipses. 

Reiff says that she has been “clouded out” from seeing a planned eclipse three times, and that while the effects of the eclipse are dulled when there are clouds, there still may be interesting things for viewers to observe. “You can still experience the eclipse with your skin because it will be cooler and the winds are going to change,” she says. “You can still experience it with your ears because the birds might change their roosting songs. You might experience it with your eyes because the dogs and other animals are lying down and acting as though it’s the evening.”

Carolyn Addison, the head of product at the Black Tomato, a travel company that designs solar eclipse trips, agrees. “If clouds are present, the eclipse will still be evident and it should still be incredible to experience, with a dramatic change in the atmosphere when the daylight darkens to night, the temperature noticeably drops, and with it, birds and other typically vocal wildlife become quiet, changing to their nighttime behavior. It’s intriguingly eerie and a unique event to witness,” she said via email.

If it’s just an overcast or partly cloudy day, Reiff still recommends making the journey, since lighter clouds have a tendency to thin out as totality starts due to the way the sunlight is scattered. “It adds to the suspense,” says Reiff. “There were several times when it was raining that morning and we didn’t think we would see it, but the cirrus clouds became more transparent as totality approached because of the scattered sunlight, and just as totality approached it cleared.”

That said, Reiff says the ability to view an eclipse during cloudy weather depends on the extent of the clouds. “If there’s widespread thunderclouds, I’m going to stay where I am,” she says. “Only if you can see through the clouds will you get the experience of the solar corona and the true experience of totality.”

How to reduce the chances of encountering clouds

There are ways to minimize the chances of encountering cloudy skies with enough planning. One useful thing eclipse watchers can do is have a backup plan if the place from which they intend to view the eclipse is cloudy.

By now, weather forecasts provided by local media stations should be fairly accurate, so you should have some idea if the place you plan on going will have clear skies. Approximately 24-48 hours before the eclipse starts, the weather forecasts will be accurate enough for you to make a decision about which places near you within the path of totality will have the best weather, says Reiss. It’s best to keep your plans flexible until then if your goal is to view totality under clear skies.
