Blackberry Smoke Postpone Concerts After Drummer Brit Turner’s Death

By Jon Blistein

Jon Blistein

Blackberry Smoke have decided to reschedule three of their upcoming shows as they mourn the death of drummer Brit Turner .

The three postponed gigs were set to take place this weekend in Denver; Beaver Creek, Colorado; and Kansas City. Blackberry Smoke said they would “be back as soon as possible” with more info and rescheduled dates, but urged fans to hold onto their tickets as they’ll be valid for the new gigs.

As it stands, Blackberry Smoke will return to the road March 14 at the Val Air Ballroom in West Des Moines, Iowa.

“Thank you all for your continued support during this time,” Blackberry Smoke said. They also told fans looking to support Turner’s family to visit a donation page for the non-profit group, Families and Communities Together (FACT) Relief.

Turner died on Sunday at the age of 57. He’d been battling glioblastoma (brain cancer), which he was diagnosed with in 2022; a few months prior, Turner had suffered a heart attack, and a tumor was later discovered during a routine MRI. Turner underwent brain surgery in 2022 and even managed to return to the stage with Blackberry Smoke a few weeks later.

Despite his illness, Turner continued to play with Blackberry Smoke whenever his health allowed. He also drummed on the band’s most recent album, Be Right Here , which was released last month.

Blackberry Smoke Announce 2021/2022 Tour Dates

Matt Kolbe

Acclaimed country rock band Blackberry Smoke is returning to the road this year in a big way with the recent announcements of TWO full tours. First up is their “Spirit of the South Tour: A Celebration of Southern Rock N’ Roll,” which will commemorate various influential Southern rock acts. This tour will feature The Allman Betts Band , The Wild Feathers and a mobile exhibit from The Allman Brothers Band Museum at the Big House. The tour begins June 25th and ends August 28th with venues primarily in the South and Northeast.

After that is the “You Hear Georgia Tour” that will run from August 31st to next April. It will kick off in Columbus, OH at The Athenaeum Theater and continue in the US. Starting in October Blueberry Smoke will travel over seas to Europe, eventually heading back to the US next spring. Tickets are on sale now.

This year is special for the band as their 20th year together and with the recent release of their LP, You Hear Georgia . This album pays tribute to Southern rock and the Georgia sound and is “a wonderful blend of blues, rock and country from start to finish,” according to Outsider.

With the pandemic winding down, Blackberry Smoke is excited to get back to touring, like many artists today. “We are long overdue to get out to these great places and see some friends, family, brothers and sisters that we have really missed,” says lead singer Charlie Starr. “It’s going to be extra special playing these big rock n’ roll shows again!”

Blackberry Smoke are a rock band hailing from Atlanta, Georgia, United States who formed in 2000. Since their debut in 2004 they have become one of the most acclaimed, respected and succesful southern rock bands of the 21st century, and have released four studio albums.

It would be easy to classify Blackberry Smoke as throwbacks. A band that used to weep themselves to sleep every night about how they didn’t form in 1972 until they took a stand and decided to make the 21st century sound as much like the seventies as they could. However, the band are a little more complex than that. The band was formed around the friendship between singer Charlie Starr and guitarist Paul Jackson, who met in LaGrange, Georgia and became gig buddies in short order. The two would head down to the state capital of Atlanta to see bands play, and it was there that they met brothers Brit and Richard Turner, who know play drums and bass respectively. Each of them had been playing their instruments since they were children, and eventually, the four piece got around to jamming together.

Soon enough, Brandon Still joined on the keys and the band made their live debut in 2000, playing anywhere that would have them. They spent the first three years of their existence playing live around the Atlanta rock scene, before signing to Cock Of The Walk records in 2003 and releasing their debut album “Bad Luck Ain’t No Crime” in January of the following year. Since then they’ve supported practically every southern rock band of note that’s still going, from ZZ Top to Lynyrd Skynyrd themselves. They’ve even started to see some well deserved commercial success come their way, with their third album “The Whippoorwill” charting in the top ten of the Billboard country album charts. Its follow up, 2015’s “Holding All The Roses” did even better by hurtling into the number one spot on its first week of release. They’re the next generation of classic American rock music, and for that, they come highly recommended.

Live reviews

Blackberry Smoke have made a major impact among the rock fraternity in the UK during the last 12 months, following the release of their most recent studio CD, "The Whippoorwill". Its the last night of half a dozen dates and although some new songs are reported from earlier dates we are treated to the tried and trusted tonight.

This is their second tour here this year and while they are promoting their recent live release "Leave a Scar - Live", their set is dominated by material from their most recent studio CD.

The "Institute" in Birmingham turns out to be what I have always known as "Digbeth Civic Hall", but time waits for no man so I need to get used to its current name. In addition to the stalls it has 2 balcony levels (to assist short people like myself, who want to actually see the band) and has a capacity of around 1,200, or so I`m told.

Before the headliners take to the stage we are treated to an appearance from up and coming blues rock starlet Aaron Keylock, which warms the audience up nicely. The 3 piece band race through a short set of original material, dominated by Keylock's searing guitar. He likes his "bottle neck" and songs like opener "Medicine Man" feature it strongly. Definitely one to look out for.

By the time Blackberry Smoke hit the stage with "Like I Am" the place looks full to bursting and the band get a great reception. The music is "Southern Rock" more in the 70's "Skynerd" style than, say heavier 21st century proponents like "Blackstone Cherry", with a nod towards the blues and more than a nod towards country music.

The band continue with "Testify" from "Bad Luck Ain't No Crime", their first full length CD album, recorded before keyboardist Brandon Still had joined. The stand out track on that release, the addition of the glorious B3 sound has transformed it into an anthem.

The set races along, dipping into the "Honky Tonk Bootlegs" mini LP and their 3rd release "Little Piece Of Dixie" for nuggets like "Lesson in a Bottle", "Restless" and the hard hitting "Up in Smoke" which has the crowd bouncing around in the stalls.

Charlie Starr is a "star"; the main songwriter in the band, he handles lead vocals and most of the lead guitar. His voice is perfect for the style of music being played, from the hard rockers to the country flavoured ballads that are featured in the second half of the set and he is ably assisted by guitarist Paul Jackson who handles solo's and dual lead with Charlie when called upon.

Paul and bassist Rich Turner provide backing vocals and harmonies and these are an important part of the group's sound. It is particularly evident from songs like the meandering "The Whippoorwill" that the band work hard on their arrangements, with the instrumentation complementing the song perfectly.

Rich and his brother Britt (looks nothing like his namesake Ekland) combine to form a solid rhythm section and the aforementioned Brandon Still adds B3 and piano to give the sound richness and depth.

The band are up for having a bit of fun and slip in a verse of the Allman's "Midnight Rider" during "Sleepin' Dogs" as is their habit and introduce some of the songs with short stories, including recollection of a meeting with the country rockers the "Maverick's" that left its mark on all concerned before "Lesson in a Bottle".

Catchy songs like "Pretty Little Lie" and "One Horse Town" are further highlights and Charlie switches to acoustic guitar for "Ain't Got the Blues", with its almost Honky tonk feel.

The main set builds to its climax with the powerful "Ain't Much Left Of Me", all slide guitar and a verse from "When the Levee Breaks" and the lads leave to rapturous applause and cheering.

The band return and play an encore set, featuring two of the best known songs from the "Whippoorwell" CD, the up tempo "Leave a Scar" and "Shakin' Hands with the Holy Ghost", the song that first obtained radio airplay for them in the UK, leaving the crowd in high spirits at the close.

Blackberry Smoke have come from nowhere to being a genuine concert draw in the UK in little over a year. Their last 2 CD`s, "Whippoorwill" and "Leave a Scar - Live" showcase their ability to write good songs and arrange them well - seeing them live confirms that they are the real deal!

In general they're good fun, have personality, a good groove and are good value. I enjoyed the rehearsed "improvised jams," especially the Led Zep snippets, but I'm a fairly frequent gig goer and this year and have been lucky enough to see some amazing gigs, and this one felt a little flat to me. The latest album; left me a little underwhelmed tbh and having seen them 3 times in three years I think perhaps the novelty is beginning to wear a little thin for me. Maybe its the 'London factor' but having seen the Smoke in Manchester last year they just don't seem to play with the same verve and intensity in the capital. As a tinnitus sufferer the volume and acoustics didn't help performance and they fairly rattled through the set with not much in the way of between song banter or interplay with the crowd. It wasn't a bad gig just a little muted, I left during the first song of the encore in time to get the last train home and hope I didn't miss something special. Perhaps tiredness was a factor given the fact that they tour almost constantly? I think I will give the next London gig a miss and maybe try and catch them at another venue. 7/10

The warm up bands were ok, not sure if I'd buy their cd's, but it was worth listening to as a warm up. As for Blackberry Smoke, they were a tremendous experience. I was a little disappointed they didn't play one of my favorite songs by them. Sense they have such a large selection of quality work, and a finite performance time, I understand that they couldn't play everything of theirs. I got to meet Charlie briefly before the concert, very nice guy. I am a new BBS fan, which amazes me as to the length of time they've been performing and not popped up on my radar before now. I was raised in the south, and I see their southern charm and manners shine through in their interviews, and even their performances. I hope they keep their humility and politeness in what I am sure to be a very successful career. I talked to some of their more seasoned fans, and the thing that comes through is BBS are "performers"! As a side note, they were awesome in improving their music, straying from their music to "The Beatles White Album, Why Don't we do it in the Road", to some Led Zeppelin stuff. How many ways can you say "awesome concert"?

Blackberry Smoke I’m assuming aren’t talking about the Blackberry phones with their name surely? Nope. They bring to the table a very distinct southern rock with the grittiest vocals and guitar sound. Their music is so catchy, this whole atmosphere feels like a party, with maybe four thousand people watching them, all of which are dancing and singing along, with at least one drink in their hands. I’ve got to give it to this band, they just know exactly what they’re doing with the tightest sound and some of the most soulful lead breaks from the both guitarists and keyboard players.

It almost feels like a country and western musical with the variety of songs that they play despite all being that of a country vibe. Some personal highlights for me this evening are songs such as “Shakin Hands with The Holy Ghost”, and “One Horse Town” every song being as good as the last.

When I read that BS were playing as close to me as Newcastle, I just had to go. I took my 17 year old daughter who was probably the youngest at the show.

When the guys came on stage and started off with Holy Ghost it set the show off in style. What a bunch of musicians these guys are and not a hint of a voice synthesiser anywhere. These are the real deal and not like the manufactured pop rubbish we get thrown down our necks on the radio!

Take my word for it, BS will go all the way to the top. Not a big head in sight, just an honest set of guys doing what they do best.

Minimal talking from Charlie Starr, just a quick thank you and on to the next song.

I think the band were taken back by the amount of noise we made and the knowledge we had of the lyrics (it's a long way from Atlanta to the North East).

This is a band not to be missed!!

DO NOT be afraid of "labels" and go see this Band!! BBS will kick your butt from here (where ever that may be) to Georgia and back and you'll be a better person for it. There has been a grassroots resurgence of Straight up good Rock n' Roll going on for awhile now and BBS are one of the bands leading the march. IMO the first band to actually deserve to be considered a viable candidate to step up and fill the hole left by the original line up of LYNYRD SKYNYRD. That being said, BBS is more akin to AEROSMITH. As there is a "Edge" to them that maybe SKYNYRD only showed in songs like "Gimme back my Bullets"?

Great musicians, great songs, catchy hooks and all played with a swagger that has been missing in real rock music for a very long time. Go see them Live and you will be convinced within the first song.

These guys have a good time. Plain and simple, the love for playing music is not lost on this group of artists. From the start of the show until the end every member of Blackberry Smoke can't frown from grinin'. This is passed on to anyone in the crowd willing to appreciate it. They ripped through gem after gem after gem from their songbook. Sprinkling in some new songs that, I'll be honest, sound much better live than on the album. Blackberry Smoke makes their own formula of the southern rock show, but at times are reminded of their roots and influences. They got the Led out and turned to 11. I really like a Blackberry Smoke show. If you want to have fun for a few hours and enjoy rock n roll, catch them when you can.

In a sold out hmv ritz in manchester, the support was from the fantastic blues 16 year old singer aaron keylock, this young gentleman is destined for great things. Then on came blackberry smoke, what can be said about these guys, fantastic musicianship, not a note and vocal out of place. Southern country/rock at its best, all the classic songs by these guys were played. These guys have been going for just over 10 Years and hail from Atlanta, Georgia and are beginning to get radio play and quite a following on these shores.

Blackberry Smoke’s Brit Turner Battles Through Brain Cancer

blackberry smoke uk tour 2022 cancelled

In Southern rock, you don’t have “bands” in the normal sense. You have bands of brothers and sisters. They’re more like families than bands. This was one of the reasons the Georgia-based Southern rock band The Allman Brothers named their iconic 1973 album Brothers and Sisters after the passing of band members Duane Allman and Berry Oakley. This “Brothers and Sisters” designation is especially true for Blackberry Smoke, who also hail from Georgia. And that is why 2022 has been an especially difficult year for the band as the heartbeat and historian of Blackberry Smoke, Brit Turner, has been suffering from major health issues. Along with being a founding member of the band, Brit is the literal brother of bass player Richard Turner, and is considered the big brother to everyone in the band. On Friday night, December 16th at The Vic Theatre in Chicago, Blackberry Smoke had to stop the show in the middle of the set after Brit Turner experienced an episode and was helped off stage. According to the band, he is currently under medical care and is in stable condition after suffering a seizure. But the fact that Brit Turner was even on the stage to begin with feels like a miracle in itself, and a testament to his character. It was bad news for Brit Turner on August 16th when he suffered a heart attack at his home in Atlanta. Luckily, Turner was able to make it to the hospital on time where he received a stent in his coronary artery, and was discharged from the hospital on August 18th. Turner missed a few shows as Blackberry Smoke performed acoustically without him, but Turner was able to make a full recovery and return to the stage. Then on November 3rd, the band announced, “Sometimes the truth is stranger than fiction. Earlier this week, Brit Turner suffered an episode and needed to be taken to the ER. He was feeling alright but due to the issues from his recent heart attack, his medical team elected to keep him in the hospital and run a series of tests to determine what could have caused the situation. Upon receiving an MRI they found a tumor on his brain in the frontal lobe … Brit is now undergoing surgery and more testing to find out what his next steps to a healthy recovery will be.” Brit Turner had to have parts of his skull removed so surgeons could remove the tumor. It was diagnosed as an aggressive, rare, and fast-growing form of brain cancer known as Glioblastoma. But almost as miraculous as his recovery was from his heart attack, less than a week after first suffering the episode and having brain surgery, Brit Turner was discharged from the hospital on November 9th once again, and recovering at home. By November 20th, Brit was back behind the drum set, grooving away no worse for the wear.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Brit Turner (@britturner13)

On November 25th when Blackberry Smoke played their homecoming show at The Fox Theatre in Atlanta and sold it out for the first time, Brit Turner was right there behind the drum set like he’s always been for his first official show after the surgery, and received a standing ovation from the crowd during band introductions by frontman Charlie Starr (see below). But then on November 30th, Blackberry Smoke informed the public that Brit Turner was not out of the woods just yet. “Continued testing has revealed his Glioblastoma diagnosis needs aggressive treatment,” the band said. “Fortunately, we are in touch with some of the best specialists to provide him the utmost care. Currently, we are working our way forward using all the resources that are available.” “Brit will continue to be a part of everything that Blackberry Smoke does,” the band assured. “Due to the nature of these treatments, and his own recovery schedule, we anticipate that there will likely be some periods that may keep Brit away from travel and performing live. We ask that you continue your support and trust that he will make every effort to be at all the shows. We will have someone to fill in case he isn’t.” Drummers Mike Rizzi and Kent Aberle have both spent periods filling in for Britt during his recovery. Yet despite the November 30th warning from Blackberry Smoke, Brit Turner had been with the band, and performing this week at shows at Webster Hall in New York on December 10th, at the Roxian Theatre in Pittsburgh, and in Grand Rapids and Detroit on the 14th and 15th. The band is playing Saturday night at the Crystal Grand Music Theatre in Wisconsin with Kent Aberle filling in. After two major surgeries, and two major health issues in 2022, Brit Turner has shown incredible grit and persistence to return to the stage at all. Lesser men would have hung it up, or at least taken longer periods to recover, and lesser bands may have moved on to find another drummer. But not Brit Turner and Blackberry Smoke. Though it can be expected to be touch and go for Brit Turner as the band continues to be one of the hardest touring outfits out there on the road and is already filling in their 2023 tour schedule, Brit Turner will remain the heartbeat of Blackberry Smoke, wherever he happens to be. Those wanting to support Brit Taylor can do so on Fact Relief .

Without a doubt, BBS is the best band I’ve listened to in a long time. Their cover of Man of Constant Sorrow live is one of the grooviest versions I’ve heard of this classic. Britt is the man who oversees the guys with his classic drum style carrying the beat in whatever direction they take. Prayers and best wishes to Britt and the band.

Brit, you truly are the heartbeat of Blackberry Smoke in every sense of the word. The loyalty to you both on and off the stage is incredible, and well deserved. Blackberry Smoke is a band of brothers the world has not seen in many years, if ever. You have brought Southern Rock back to the forefront and made it a your own. You have created that one powerful sound that is like no other. You have a following that most bands only pray for. You have reached the summit and have so much to be proud of. Every one of us brothers and sisters are proud of you and the band. We will miss you while you take time off to fight this fight, but we have faith that you’ll be back to ride this awesome wave you’ve created, so we’ll wait. Never feel alone in this fight. We truly are behind you with so much love and so many prayers. We all love you brother. You’ve definitely got this, and we’ve got you. #YOUGOTTHISBRIT

Fight this hard Britt. You will win see you in Birmingham O2 in march 2023.

' data-tf-not-load src=

Prayers for you Brit, keep drumming n leading other bands to great down home rock n roll. Merry Christmas to all.

' data-tf-not-load src=

Sincerely, I do think Blackberry Smoke sold out previous shows, including in 2019, the “Homecoming: live in Atlanta. They sell out so many shows. Give ’em a bit more credit, OK? Best from France. Linda

' data-tf-not-load src=

That point about the sellout on Brit Turner’s return at the Fox Theater comes from Blackberry Smoke themselves. They have definitely had sellouts in the past, but perhaps not at that particular venue. Definitely was not trying to discount them.

OK, very cool. Thanks for the clarification. Appreciated this story but am rather anxious for Brit. Keep on rock ‘n rolling everybody. Merci, thanks again. Linda

' data-tf-not-load src=

The Brothers & Sisters Holiday Reunion in November has been at the Tabernacle for years. This MAY have been the 1st reunion show at the Fox which would explain the term “1st sell out”. They tend to sell out most all venues across the US. Fans here tend to travel far & wide multiple times a year for shows.

Appreciate your taking the time to reply. Thanks! Indeed, I was expected BBS to play at the Tabernacle. I was reacting to the “first sell out” as being rather misleading. Folks, get your tickets as soon as you can for their shows. Paris, France and Portland, Oregon were definitely sold out when I saw them. Antwerp, Belgium perhaps wasn’t a full house. But their upcoming Europe tour should be a sell out! Hope so. See you 24 March 2023 in Paris! Merci Darlene for your reply. Linda

' data-tf-not-load src=

We love you Britt God bless your speedy recovery Praying for you and the band. Take care. Can’t stand the thought of losing my brothers

' data-tf-not-load src=

oh no!! I thought everything was good with him now. does this mean the surgery didn’t work? Man I hope he pulls through. supper nice guy. I’ve bumped into him around town a few times, and have seen the band play more times than I can remember. I’m not sure they would be able to stay together without him.

' data-tf-not-load src=

Hi, surgery was successful. The surgeon left 10% of the tumor as he felt it was too dangerous to operate in that area. Also he thought this was a non-cancer.

Unfortunately he has Glioblastoma. It’s a doozy to say the least.

Docs cleared him to play and he has maintained his healthy diet and exercise. He suffered the beginnings of a seizure on stage.

The band could not be any more supportive and caring if they tried, and that includes the time our daughter was dealing with her own cancer. 😵‍💫

I don’t normally jump on but I love this site and there ya go! Shannon

' data-tf-not-load src=

You’re the best! I’ve been praying for Brit and family every day! I love all of you!

Prayin’ for Brit

' data-tf-not-load src=

Best r’n’r band around, seen them many times , will see you again in Milan Britt!!

' data-tf-not-load src=

Burn one for Brit! His daughter Lana beat cancer, he will too!

' data-tf-not-load src=

If ever there was someone who has expressed such gratitude for the love and support he has and continues to have, it is Brit. He gives updates and shows pictures of himself surrounded by friends and loved ones. Man, is he loved. BBS knows how much the fan support will be there. They do so much good. After this difficult time with Brit having a double whammy, the brothers and sisters are stepping up. Its ok to call a seizure a seizure. This would be a great time to educate the music industry, at least BBS venues, personnel and fans on seizure safety and first aid.

We’re prayin’ for Brit

To Shannon-you appear to be a strong woman. Obvious to see why you & Brit are life partners. So happy you provided an update on this site. We’re very private people & do NO social media. I too am a cancer survivor, I say too because I have faith Brit too will beat this. One small piece of advice…the 3 m’s. Medicine, music & memories. They’re essential to survival. Take a real vaycay when possible & make those memories! Navarre is great. Peace, privacy & somewhat close to home & Brits docs. Not a social religious person, but do believe & pray. You guys & the BBS family are in our thoughts & prayers. Love to all always! Bobby Joe & Darlene (Friends of Paul’s mom)

' data-tf-not-load src=

How I would of Love to see u when u came to Terra Haute Indiana. in June the 30th of 2023 I had missed it but I sure do play a lot of ur music, Love Ur music always well Love U all always.. hope one of these days Ill get to meant ur band so here is to u all I drink a toss to u all to a good life too come /..,

' data-tf-not-load src=

Prayers for Brit and his family. Hope BBS will rock for many years to come!! There are many bands I grew up with and love but BBS has a sound others can’t touch. It’s really a shame that they more than likely never know how much they’re music is thoroughly loved. I am a fan forever🥰!! Look forward to seeing you guys in Houston. Best wishes and much love to you all, you are great guys and an Amazing band.
