Bonobo Takes Brooklyn: Our Review Of The Fragments Tour

Bonobo

Name a musician, producer, or DJ with a full band that can fill Avant Gardner’s Kings Hall on a rainy Sunday night in Brooklyn.

The answer is Bonobo .

Bonobo (aka Simon Green) is currently on the North American leg of his Fragments tour. The five-time GRAMMY-nominee is on the road with his full band – yes, including trumpets, drums, vocals, guitars, and keys.

If you’re new to Bonobo, here’s the rundown:

His latest full length album, Fragments , was released this year to much success includinghitting #3 on Billboard's Top Dance / Electronic Albums Chart and #5 on the Official UK Albums Chart. Fragments is Bonobo’s seventh album and he also just released a new single, “ATK.”

He’s graced stages both big and small - from an NPR Tiny Desk concert to performing four times in 24 hours at Glastonbury Festival.

Now, what did Bonobo bring to Brooklyn?

Trip-Hop . Prior to attending, I can honestly say I had no clue what that meant. Defined as a more downtempo sound originating in the early 90s in the UK, Bonobo is a major contributor to this niche genre.

Bonobo delivered a set full of psychedelic, melodic, funk fusion that builds up just to come down flawlessly. I found myself mesmerized early on by the sounds of “ Tides ,” a crowd-favorite collaboration with Jamila Woods . For this tour Bonobo has blessed us with a live version, featured by the equally enchanting vocals of Nicole Miglis of Hundred Waters .

Bonobo gave Brooklyn a rare experience in the music industry: electronic music played fully live, even down to the vocals. Not only did we get to experience the magic of live instruments, but we were also able to embrace the camaraderie of the band, the ebb and flow of their connection from track to track, and a million pieces moving at once.

Ultimately, we saw a totally unique version of each track influenced by the crowd, the space, and the day. Fragments won’t sound the exact same from city to city but each will get an equally beautiful part of Bonobo’s sound, and that’s the one thing you get to take home.

Full transparency, this trip-hop, psychedelic aesthetic may not be for everyone (it wasn’t for me), but this tour definitely is. By the time the three-song encore came around, I was sold and swaying/bopping/jumping to the beat - and yes, if you listen to Fragments you’ll see that all types of dancing are applicable.

Closing out the night with “Break Apart,” the crowd left lighter, spilling into the rainy industrial streets of Brooklyn.

Bonobo continues his North American run throughout October and will be heading over to Europe after. With an incredible catalog already, we hope not only to see Bonobo back in New York but his full artistic vision as well.

Bonobo Announces New Album Fragments (January 14 / Ninja Tune) & World Tour

LEAD SINGLE  “ROSEWOOD”  OUT NOW, WATCH VISUALIZER  HERE

October 6, 2021 - Bonobo has announced  Fragments , a new album that will be released January 14, 2022 (Ninja Tune), along with a 2022 world tour.  Fragments  is the most emotionally intense record that he - aka Simon Green - has ever had to make. It’s no surprise that it’s also his masterpiece. The album features Jamila Woods, Joji, Kadhja Bonet, Jordan Rakei, O’Flynn and Miguel Atwood-Ferguson. Born first out of fragments of ideas and experimentation, the album ultimately was fused together in a burst of creativity fueled by both collaboration and Green’s escape into the wild.

One of the biggest names in dance music, Green’s career includes 3 Grammy nominations and playing to over 2 million people for the tour supporting his 2017 album  Migration .  Migration  also reached #1 on Billboard’s Dance album chart and hit Top Ten positions in several countries. He’s also a favorite mainstage performer at the world’s greatest music festivals.

Along with today’s announcement, Bonobo has shared “Rosewood,” which debuted on Zane Lowe’s Apple Music program earlier today.

Listen to “Rosewood” and watch the visualizer here:

https://bonobo.lnk.to/fragmentsPR

https://bonobo.lnk.to/fragmentsPR/youtube

Both the artwork for  Fragments  and the visualizer for “Rosewood” were created by Neil Krug, who returns after doing the artwork for 2017’s  Migration .

Fragments  is a series of 12 sonic affirmations, featuring some of the hardest and most hip-shaking grooves that Green has ever created. The ballads are perfectly placed throughout; they capture a world in flux and glow with hope. Coaxing the ideas out initially took some hard work. The constantly-touring Green creates best while on the move; the global shutdown forced him to stand still.

Musical themes began to arise through Green’s exploration of modular synthesis, recordings he had made of harpist Lara Somogyi, his work with arranger and string player Miguel Atwood-Ferguson, his own playing of the Fender Rhodes and more, as the album was created, recorded and mixed by Green over the past two years. The album also came into focus as he sought refuge on solo adventures into nature, away from the shutdowns and wildfires and into the blazing California desert.

“Tides,” featuring Chicagoan singer and poet Jamila Woods, acted as a catalyst, and the album began to click into place around it. “I knew I had a centrepiece, I knew how it was all going to sound,” he says. Working with Miguel Atwood-Ferguson, musical themes began to emerge. Recording orchestral musicians in actual studios helped bring the songs “out of the box” even more.

A rhythmic framework started to come together too: the structures of UK bass music and rave began to seep into beats that would become tracks like “Otomo” (eventually co-produced by O’Flynn and featuring a sample of the Bulgarian choir 100 Kaba-Gaidi), and “Sapien.” The ”old school, Detroity, Moodymann and Theo Parrish inspired” “Shadows” was recorded with friend Jordan Rakei. “Rosewood,” “Closer” and “Counterpart” each start with an ecstatic snap to them, but snake down surprisingly different paths. Somogyi's harp and Atwood-Ferguson's strings mingle together on the beatless “Elysian.” Two ballads flesh out the second half of the record: “Day by Day” featuring Kadhja Bonet and “From You” featuring Joji.

It's about the dancefloor in many ways, about how “I remembered all over again how much I loved crowds and movement and people connecting with each other,” Green reflects. But the positivity isn’t just in the uptempo rhythms: even the most introspective and melancholic pieces have joy in them.

Si Green, AKA Bonobo.

Bonobo: Fragments review – a wondrous nirvana

(Ninja Tune) Si Green’s celestial, swooning seventh studio album is a restful ambient dream

A t every afterparty since 1988, at least one partygoer has fantasised about their friendship group growing old together in a rave retirement facility where they pipe mellow bangers through the intercom. Sesh pensioners, this is your ideal soundtrack. Since 2010’s breakthrough Black Sands , Bonobo ’s Si Green has used what he calls “electronic methods to make non-electronic music” to richly satisfying effect, and Fragments is his peak production.

As with the Cinematic Orchestra or Caribou , you settle into a Bonobo album or gig knowing roughly what the destination will be, yet never sure exactly how you’ll get there. Harps and strings are central to this year’s trip, but there’s ample space for skittery breaks, deep house and haunting choral samples.

Green usually finds singers who dovetail with his music, as with previous collaborators Erykah Badu and Nick Murphy . Here, the promising Jordan Rakei impresses on Shadows . Poet Jamila Woods brings Tides , the best song, a swooning beauty that expertly blurs its acoustic and electronic elements. With less dissonance and psychedelic experimentation than Jon Hopkins or Four Tet , Fragments may be too care-home comfort for some, but it’s brilliant, wondrous work.

Bonobo: “I try not to let nostalgia control what I'm doing —it isn't healthy"

Ralph Moore sits down with the master of melody to talk Akira, Lewis Taylor and Billie Eilish bringing out Damon Albarn at Coachella

  • Words: Ralph Moore | Photos: Grant Sapier
  • 25 May 2022

Mixmag has a considerable history with Simon ‘Bonobo’ Green. Back in February 2017 – a full five years back — he was on the cover of our print edition (and it was shot in Death Valley no less, helping to inspire our recent Dan Shake digital cover ) and while he’s now a globetrotting DJ and producer who has found a huge following in The United States as well as back here in Europe. When we speak over Zoom, he’s actually back in East London for a few days' break — ahead of a bumper summer tour. Straight off the back of selling out 5 nights at the Albert Hall last week — he'll be heading to Mannheim, Athens, Glastonbury and Australia , where he’s headlining at Sydney’s iconic Enmore Theatre for two nights of electronic joy.

In-person, he’s as smart and charismatic as his music and his recent album ‘ Fragments ’ is similarly jam-packed with crunchy, thoughtful jams like the dreamy first single ‘ Rosewood ’. It also features oodles of great contributions: Jamila Woods , Miguel Atwood-Ferguson and Jordan Rakei to the super-soulful O’Flynn , so if you haven’t had time to spend some time with his latest Ninja release, we highly recommend it.

At the end of the interview, we asked Si to recommend a documentary in return. He asks to ponder the question and email instead — guess what he told me: “So technically a film about a book but The Beastie Boys Story was excellent. I read the book too. On the subject of nostalgia that was a big one. Especially MCA’s approach to production thru DIY and experimentation. He particularly was a huge inspiration to me.”

Did you see our Dan Shake cover in Death Valley?

You're friends with the cover shoot's photographer Dan Medhurst, aren't you?

I am! I took him out there. I think it's a good landscape for a photoshoot.

Are we going to see you in bucket hats next?

Well, I've tried bucket hats. I really want to be a bucket hat person, but it's just my head is too big — I've just looked stupid. I've really tried.

Well, let's not focus on bucket hats too much! I want to say congratulations on the new record, it's the very definition of what I call "a keeper."

The first cut that really grabbed me was ‘ Otomo ’ with O'Flynn, which is very sweeping and cinematic. Hopefully, it will end up in a film.

Was it important for the LP to feel cinematic?

It kind of wasn’t — but of course, there’s always a visual element to what I'm doing. It was inspired by the guy who made Akira — with big choral choirs and big percussive drums.

There’s also Jordan Rakei on ‘Shadows’. My question here: Is he this generation's Lewis Taylor ?

It’s funny you ask that because I was actually talking to him about it — he's really inspired by Lewis Taylor.

Read this next: Bonobo is dropping first album in four years, 'Fragments'

Lewis is a very enigmatic character, isn't he?

Yeah, totally! Jordan was telling me this interesting story about how he was trying to work with D'Angelo . And I don't think D’Angelo could really deal with how he was such an ordinary-seeming guy — because he was such a big fan of his music! When he met him he was overwhelmed by how just normal and English he was. I love that. He's definitely an inspiration for Jordan.

The other track which I've been playing a lot today is ‘ Age Of Phase ’, which really is quintessential Bonobo. It’s got your trademark optimism. But when you're making music, where is it that you want the listener or indeed, yourself to go? Is it a bunch of things?

Well, I think music is great when it transports you somewhere else…

So is that kind of what you're trying to do?

Yeah, but you can't really force that kind of emotion on it. I just feel that most of the stuff that I do is a product of experimentation — and with that one, it was about finding that little vocal hook. Because essentially, I was spending a lot of time in peak 2020 lockdown, making that tune. And I had these nice little modular loops going and I was trying to find a way to humanize that a little bit and create something a bit more emotional and you know, a sense of romance to it. Something that was quite technical as well as something that sounded a little bit more human. So finding that vocal loop and then eventually re-harmonizing it in a way, brings it in quite an unexpected direction.

bonobo fragments tour

Do you think it's important that people listen to a record all the way through? to experience it fully? instead of picking out tracks?

I really don't know. I think the way I listen to music is probably different to most but I don't listen to as many albums from start to finish as I used to. We spent a lot of time, between me and Adrian and Ninja Tune, sequencing the record, as we did with the previous ones as well, asking ourselves a lot "how do we make it flow?" But I agree that it's harder for people to stay engaged. But equally, I've also always been a big advocate of doing an album, I think it's kind of like presenting a body of work at the same time.

Someone else signed to Ninja Tune — Whom you also featured in your fabric presents mix — who's doing super-well, is TSHA . Are you happy to see that?

Yeah, it's really good. Over the last couple of years, it has been really hard for new artists to kind of do anything. But you know, it's exciting! There are all kinds of excitement to see her on the other side of the last two years when no one was doing anything to now being out there smashing the festivals. I mean, she's a really, really exciting DJ as well.

You've created a massive fanbase in the US now — do you have younger artists on the other side of the pond who've told you they've been inspired by your show?

Yeah, definitely. It's quite flattering as well. I think Rüfüs Du Sol are an example of that. They were on tour with us early on, when they were starting out. I know that they took away a few things from how we were doing it, both musically and live. I'm sure there are others! I speak to a lot of people as well and it's nice to see a lot of Americans who are more in the EDM lane are into what I'm doing and branching out a bit.

Read this next: 10 iconic Bonobo moments

It hasn't given you a big head that's too big for a bucket hat?

I think it's just my naturally large cranium that's done that! It’s always very nice and flattering and also kind of heartwarming. When people say that they have been inspired along the way by something you did.

Next question. Music is in a very interesting place. For example, Billy Eilish recently brought on Damon Albarn at Coachella, but mainly to reference Gorillaz. Did you see the clip?

I didn’t! But it’s interesting. I mean, I think I personally have been guilty of kind of dwelling in nostalgia a little bit much…. and I don't think it's necessarily a very healthy place to be. So while there is nostalgia in there, I try not to let it be the main catalyst for what I'm doing. But I think it's important to sort of still, you know, acknowledge all the things that went before and to sort of understand how they made you feel at the time and what it was that made you feel like that.

So did that mean that you put a lot of invisible pressure to make the new record the best it possibly could be? Because it's about the now and the next rather than the past?

Yeah, I think so. And I’m also six albums in. So it’s about things like: what am I trying to say at this point? And actually, having that big disconnect of 2020 was quite helpful in a way because it sort of I wasn't playing gigs. So I really sort of was able to completely detach from my perceived position in what I'm doing and just sort of try and make something that was very, very honest about what I was trying to do.

Bonobo’s new LP ‘Fragments’ is out now on Ninja Tune. He is currently on a world tour.

Bonobo – ‘Fragments’ review: veteran dance don offers a richly rewarding start to the year

Simon Green’s seventh album under this moniker is his most engaging in a decade: soothing, energetic and just right for the current moment

Bonobo

There’s a particular sort of music that thrives in months like these, and it’s often Bonobo ’s. Now that the festivities have fizzled out and all the big shots – Adele , Ed Sheeran , ABBA – have had their fill , scrappy upstarts are chancing their luck at Number One and thoughtful, meditative music has a chance to shine. Electronic musician Simon Green’s decision to share his seventh album ‘Fragments’ in January – almost five years to the day of his previous, ‘Migration’ – feels pointed; the month’s slower pace encourages you to let an album as richly rewarding as this envelop you completely.

In any case, Brighton-born, LA-based Green may still land his first chart-topper in the UK. His last album, released a decade-and-half into his career, was his most commercially successful work yet and ‘Fragments’ has similar momentum and potential; this is the most engaging record Green has released since 2010’s ‘Black Sands’ – it is light, airy and remarkably well pieced together.

Much like his contemporaries, such as Welsh dance don Kelly Lee Owens , he was influenced by a period of stillness after years of touring as a DJ and live performer, but he endeavoured to remain adventurous, planning solo trips into nature in California and beyond. When he emerges from the thickets tightening around the highlight ‘Otomo’, he proudly boasts of the type of bassy drops and hooks last heard on 2014’s rich ‘Flashlight’ EP. Likewise, the restlessness of ‘Closer’ and ‘Sapien’ appear to evoke that of a newcomer finding their feet, not that of a name as established as his own; the innovation and risk suits him.

Where some of his previous feather-light ballads – such as 2017’s ‘Second Sun’ – were prone to dissipating like hot breath on a frigid, sunny day, on ‘Fragments’ they’re splendidly constructed, holding their own against the beefier arrangements and thriving in their own wonderful ways. Both Chicago-based singer Jamila Woods (‘Tides’) and Kadhja Bonet (‘Day by Day’) are remarkably locked into the arrangements, their serene vocals responding and chiming well with the hues that blossom around them.

The desire right now might be to banish the January blues head-on with immediate musical rushes, but you’ll be just as fulfilled taking a deep breath and immersing yourself in an album as charming as ‘Fragments’. Come spring and summer, when this album will evolve once more and thrive in clubs and festival fields, it’ll be enriching all over again.

Fun facts from our Moscow Metro Tours:

From the very first days of its existence, the Moscow Metro was the object of civil defense, used as a bomb shelter, and designed as a defense for a possible attack on the Soviet Union.

At a depth of 50 to 120 meters lies the second, the coded system of Metro-2 of Moscow subway, which is equipped with everything you need, from food storage to the nuclear button.

According to some sources, the total length of Metro-2 reaches over 150 kilometers.

The Museum was opened on Sportivnaya metro station on November 6, 1967. It features the most interesting models of trains and stations.

Coffee Ring

The first scheme of Moscow Metro looked like a bunch of separate lines. Listen to a myth about Joseph Stalin and the main brown line of Moscow Metro.

Zodiac Metro

According to some astrologers, each of the 12 stops of the Moscow Ring Line corresponds to a particular sign of the zodiac and divides the city into astrological sector.

Astrologers believe that being in a particular zadiac sector of Moscow for a long time, you attract certain energy and events into your life.

Paleontological finds

Red marble walls of some of the Metro stations hide in themselves petrified inhabitants of ancient seas. Try and find some!

  • Every day each car in  Moscow metro passes  more than 600 km, which is the distance from Moscow to St. Petersburg.
  • Moscow subway system is the  5th in the intensity  of use (after the subways of Beijing, Tokyo, Seoul and Shanghai).
  • The interval in the movement of trains in rush hour is  90 seconds .

Touring the Top 10 Moscow Metro Stations

By Claudia Looi 2 Comments

Komsomolskaya metro station

Komsomolskaya metro station looks like a museum. It has vaulted ceilings and baroque decor.

Hidden underground, in the heart of Moscow, are historical and architectural treasures of Russia. These are Soviet-era creations – the metro stations of Moscow.

Our guide Maria introduced these elaborate metro stations as “the palaces for the people.” Built between 1937 and 1955, each station holds its own history and stories. Stalin had the idea of building beautiful underground spaces that the masses could enjoy. They would look like museums, art centers, concert halls, palaces and churches. Each would have a different theme. None would be alike.

The two-hour private tour was with a former Intourist tour guide named Maria. Maria lived in Moscow all her life and through the communist era of 60s to 90s. She has been a tour guide for more than 30 years. Being in her 60s, she moved rather quickly for her age. We traveled and crammed with Maria and other Muscovites on the metro to visit 10 different metro stations.

To Maria, every street, metro and building told a story. I couldn’t keep up with her stories. I don’t remember most of what she said because I was just thrilled being in Moscow.   Added to that, she spilled out so many Russian words and names, which to one who can’t read Cyrillic, sounded so foreign and could be easily forgotten.

The metro tour was the first part of our all day tour of Moscow with Maria. Here are the stations we visited:

1. Komsomolskaya Metro Station  is the most beautiful of them all. Painted yellow and decorated with chandeliers, gold leaves and semi precious stones, the station looks like a stately museum. And possibly decorated like a palace. I saw Komsomolskaya first, before the rest of the stations upon arrival in Moscow by train from St. Petersburg.

2. Revolution Square Metro Station (Ploshchad Revolyutsii) has marble arches and 72 bronze sculptures designed by Alexey Dushkin. The marble arches are flanked by the bronze sculptures. If you look closely you will see passersby touching the bronze dog's nose. Legend has it that good luck comes to those who touch the dog's nose.

3. Arbatskaya Metro Station served as a shelter during the Soviet-era. It is one of the largest and the deepest metro stations in Moscow.

4. Biblioteka Imeni Lenina Metro Station was built in 1935 and named after the Russian State Library. It is located near the library and has a big mosaic portrait of Lenin and yellow ceramic tiles on the track walls.

5. Kievskaya Metro Station was one of the first to be completed in Moscow. Named after the capital city of Ukraine by Kiev-born, Nikita Khruschev, Stalin's successor.

6. Novoslobodskaya Metro Station  was built in 1952. It has 32 stained glass murals with brass borders.

7. Kurskaya Metro Station was one of the first few to be built in Moscow in 1938. It has ceiling panels and artwork showing Soviet leadership, Soviet lifestyle and political power. It has a dome with patriotic slogans decorated with red stars representing the Soviet's World War II Hall of Fame. Kurskaya Metro Station is a must-visit station in Moscow.

9. Belorusskaya Metro Station is named after the people of Belarus. In the picture below, there are statues of 3 members of the Partisan Resistance in Belarus during World War II. The statues were sculpted by Sergei Orlov, S. Rabinovich and I. Slonim.

To follow-up with a silly question, will the ticket office give change or do you need exact cash? Thanks.

Of course yes!

But, you may also want to maybe just walk down...it is maybe a 15-20 minute brisk walk, but some nice sightseeing on the way. Note also that, yes, you can make transfers between all lines that "intersect" (which your Metro map should show clearly) staying within the Metro (underground).
