High Seas Outfitters – The Catch!

High seas outfitters – the reviews.

We had an incredible adventure with High Seas Outfitters Ltd. Our Captain Mike did an awesome job guiding us on the High Seas Roller and Leif and Rick took care of providing us amazing seafood dinners and anything else we may have needed on the High Seas Drifter, a historic crew boat from the 1940’s.  It was like stepping back in time but with all the amenities we could have asked for. For me it was a trip of a lifetime – the unique experience of hanging out on the High Seas Drifter, the beautiful scenery, hanging out with great friends and tagging along while Vern fished to his hearts content!
Had a great time, I really recommend this trip. Everything about this trip was first class. Spike, Leif and Rick were great and did everything to make this a trip of a lifetime. We limited out on Coho, Ling, Halibut and Rock Bass. Thanks again guys and we will see you again this summer!
We had spent fifteen years fishing with Captain Rick in the Kitimat area and when circumstances changed we were unable to find a trip anything close to what we had….that was until we met Spike, and Leif with High Seas Outfitters.  Our needs have changed but the care and attention you extended to our group will never be duplicated or forgotten.  I can only tell anyone that may be looking to make new friends, marvel at our spectacular BC Coast, enjoy daily feasts or experience the thrill of “Fish On” to seriously consider booking with High Seas!

Multi-Day Guided Fishing Trips

  • Custom Fishing Adventures

At Great River Fishing Adventures we have designed the ultimate one-day adventures that guarantee an experience full of excitement, challenge and great memories. Each of our trips is uniquely tailored to fit your needs and fishing preferences.  We offer 4-hour, 6-hour and 8-hour options, all of which have their own unique advantages.

Full-Day Guided Fishing Adventure

This is by far our most popular fishing trip and is a great way to experience an exhilarating day on the river.  The longer duration will allow that extra time and advantage to catch your next trophy fish and explore more than one of our spectacular locations.

MORE time, MORE variety, MORE fish..It’s simple math.

6-Hour Guided Fishing Adventure

This trip is perfect if you need to get out fishing but have limited time in your schedule.  This trip is ideal for families with younger children who, as we know, can sometimes have a very short attention span.  The trip is similar to the 8 hour adventure; however with the allotted time we concentrate on targeting one species in order to guarantee success.  During our peak fishing seasons, we will target multiple species upon the guests’ requests.

4-Hour Guided Fishing Adventure

Sometimes schedules only allow for a short adventure  Planned at the right time of the year, this can be a great trip  for a short introduction to our fantastic fisheries.  This is a great trip for a short  teambuilding  session, employee incentive program or just simply a unique venue for a meeting with key clients.

For those anglers that are able spend more time with us on the river, we have designed some spectacular multi-day adventure packages. Great River Fishing Adventures encourages taking advantage of this opportunity if you want a chance to experience a variety of fishing locations and the ability to target multiple species.

Great River Fishing Adventures is proud to offer first-class transportation services and several choice accommodations through our working partners, who align themselves with our driving values of service and hospitality.  Together, we want to ensure you have the best possible experience during your visit. Starting from your arrival, right through to your departure, we take care of all the details, so you can focus on why you are really here….to fish.

Depending on your fishing preference and the time of the year, we will ensure that you are situated at the best accommodation to minimize your travels to the fishing grounds each morning. The morning starts will guarantee the maximum amount of time on the water and the opportunity to play more fish.

For those groups that would like to take the experience to the next level we have our wilderness remote camps.  The two seasonal camps, situated in the  Lillooet River   and  Fraser River Canyon , provide you with a true outdoor experience like none other. These trips allow you to escape the everyday stresses of life and enjoy a true wilderness getaway. Besides spectacular scenery and fantastic fishing, you will also be fortunate to enjoy our chef catered meals and comfortable wall tent camp.

Custom Guided Fishing Trips

For those clients that would like to create their own adventure, Great River Fishing Adventures encourages you to work with us to develop the trip of a lifetime.  We have complete flexibility to accommodate any schedule and any request (subject to availability). If you are just passing through Vancouver or are here to fish for a week or two, our  expert sales team  will help you create your own unique adventure.

BC, British Columbia offers over 12,000 miles of coastline, thousands of fly fishing lakes, and a ton of fly fishing rivers too. British Columbia fly fishing is nirvana for fly fishermen.

Many a fly fisherman from all over the world have visited the province to experience its many fly fishing opportunities.

What brings fly fishermen to BC every year, is the chances to land Salmon, Trout and Steelhead, or one of its many other fish species.

Although there are many BC fly fishing hot spots, we will only focus on the best that fly fishing British Columbia has to offer.

12 Best Places for Fly Fishing British Columbia

1. skeena river.

Sitting in the Rocky Mountains, the Skeena River is the second largest river system in British Columbia and it’s one of the wild rivers of BC fly fishing that everyone has to cast a line on. It is one of the best coastal rivers for fly fishing for both steelhead and five species of salmon over the summer months.

Late summer from August to October is definitely the best time to visit the Skeena to fly fish if your target is salmon. If you’re more interested in the large steelhead runs the Skeena sees, then being on the river between March and May is best.

Fish over 20 lbs are caught every year here.

It can be a real challenge to catch a Steelhead, they are known as the fish of a thousand casts after all, but the feeling of landing one on the gravel bars is very rewarding. The rainbow trout fishing on this river is also great if you want a break from swinging flies.

Besides its wild excellent fishing, the Skeena area is covered in beautiful mountains and it’s home to some of the prettiest river fishing on the planet.

You’ll find plenty of accommodation along the river and there are multiple fishing lodges including both the Skeena Spey Lodge and Kalum Lodge.

Where To Fish On The Skeena

If you’re looking for salmon and steelhead, fishing closer to the sea gives you a better chance, and the Skeena around the town of Terrace, British Columbia is a good place to start -see the map below.

If you’re looking for some more remote British Columbia fly fishing, then head further upstream into the mountains.

2. Quesnel Lake

Quesnel Lake is located among the Cariboo Mountains and it is one of the deepest fjord lakes in the world, so bring your sinking line .

The lake offers some of the most beautiful BC fly fishing scenery. It has three arms, each offering different fly fishing opportunities, and is home to rainbow and bull trout, and the rainbows can push 20 lbs, so be prepared.

Before you plan any fly fishing trips to Quesnel Lake, you need to understand that the lake has four seasons, and each season is suitable for a different type of fishing. So check the season is appropriate for your preferred style before you book.

The locals advise that the best time of the year to plan a fly fishing trip to Quesnel Lake is around May. This is because the area is less crowded with other anglers compared to other months and it’s also when the rainbow and bull trout start feeding hard.

The fewer the anglers, the hungrier the fish, so if you time it right, it can be quite easy to reel in an incredible catch.

There are plenty of lodges and resorts in the area that can provide you with accommodation, flies, and guided tours, and access is hard without staying at one of them.

Where To Fish On The Quesnel Lake

If you are in the mood for trout fishing in British Columbia, you can head over to the bay in the West Arm to fish bull trout and rainbow trout and work the tributaries where mountain streams enter the lake.

Recommended Flies For the Quesnel Lake

  • Big streamers
  • Big leeches

3. Upper Pitt River

If you want to go fly fishing around Vancouver Island, the Upper Pitt River should be at the top of your itinerary. The Upper Pitt is without a doubt one of the best BC fly fishing spots. Many seasoned fly fishermen classify it in the top 10 fly fishing destinations in North America.

This British Columbia fly fishing destination isn’t only scenic but also very productive. The glacier-capped mountains, coupled with the old-growth rain forest offer spectacular views.

The scenery is amazing but the river fishing better with chances of catching rainbow trout up to 15 lbs year-round and huge Bull Trout and Dolly Varden are caught between May & July.

Since they start their journey towards the river around May through mid-June, the prime time of the year to visit the Upper Pitt River for fly fishing would be during late spring to mid-summer.

Where To Fish On The Upper Pitt

You can access the Upper Pitt via a jet boat or a helicopter, whichever works best for you. It’s only about 70 minutes away from Vancouver Island and you should fish from where the lake joins the river and up.

4. Squamish River

If you want to go fly fishing on the Squamish River, you have to drive for about 60 minutes via the scenic Sea to Sky Highway to get there. Squamish is a typical British Columbia West Coast fly fishing river.

The fly fishing area is surrounded by dense rain forests and glacier-capped mountains that rise over 7,000 feet. Local wildlife includes black bears, deer, and elk. The surroundings are breath-taking, there is plenty to look at as you wait for the trout or salmons to strike.

Fly fishing in these parts is relatively easy, you just have to cast your fly and watch the Pink Salmons jump at the opportunity. The Pinks in the area are huge in numbers and you can keep fishing for them for hours on end. The Squamish is popular worldwide for its incredible opportunities for fly fishing for salmon.

If you want to catch Pinks the best time of the year to visit this fly fishing destination is from July 15 to September 7. If you want to fish for some Chum salmon and Coho, plan your fly fishing trip for October through November. At this time of year populations of trout are also common.

Where To Fish On The Squamish

There is great access to the Squamish and the easiest place to park your car is near the airport and you can then hike up and fish down, or fish down and hike back up.

5. Fraser River Valley

The Fraser River Valley, British Columbia, offers a variety of incredible fly fishing destinations near Vancouver.

It has many different fish types to fly fish for including westslope cutthroat trout, Pacific Salmon, Coho, Chum, Steelhead, Sockeye, and Chinook salmon, however, the last two are quite challenging to catch.

You can also try some Sturgeon fishing from March through late November.

The best time of the year to experience the British Columbia fly fishing thrills of Fraser is October through early November.

This is the time when salmon are migrating upriver from the Pacific Ocean to spawn. In some odd years, you can get Pink Salmon as early as September.

Since there are so many different varieties of fish here, fly fishing can be a bit tricky. Make sure that you sharpen your skills as you prepare for the upcoming fly fishing trips to these regions.

Where To Fish On The Fraser

This is another of the BC rivers that have a ton of access and it runs for miles, pick a spot closer to the sea with deep pools for these migrator fish to hold up in.

Or headway upriver to look for the westslope cutthroat trout in smaller water.

Recommended Flies For The Fraser

  • Copper John
  • Pheasant tail
  • Elk Hair Caddis
  • Wooly bugger
  • Egg patterns

6. Haida Gwaii

The Haida Gwaii is a relatively remote archipelago for fly fishing in BC and is home to some of the wild rivers that have to be fished by all fly fishermen once

It is known for its large population of Salmon and Steelhead. There are also trophy Chinook Salmon, which are a very popular target for fly fishermen.

Many professional fly fishermen recommend that visitors try out Langara Island, located to the south of Alaska since this is where the most salmon migrate upriver.

You can also find good populations of Sockeye, Red Snapper, Rockfish, and Halibut as you enjoy the first-class BC fly fishing experience. You can also seek accommodation at a nearby lodge at affordable rates.

Where To Fish On The Haida Gwaii

This area is very remote and you’ll want to stay at a lodge for the best access opportunities. The Masset Inlet is a great spot to fish if you can get there.

Recommended Flies For the Haida Gwaii

7. campbell river.

For over a century, the Campbell River has been one of the rivers enjoying very high salmon populations with millions of salmon migrating annually through the Discovery Passage as they head home to spawn.

Although the river has four fishing seasons, salmon fly fishing is the most popular from May through November.

If you want to fly fish some Steelhead or Cutthroat trout, the best time to visit Campbell would be during winter. The cutthroat trout fishing can be amazing!

The area is also home to the Discovery Pier – the first-ever Canadian saltwater fishing pier. If you are an eager fly angler you can join the Tyee Club and become a legendary member as you try your luck at reeling in some of the biggest Chinook.

8. Thompson – Nicola

The Thompson – Nicola isn’t your typical fly fishing river scene but it is a destination you should plan to visit on your fly fishing trip to British Columbia.

Situated in the Merritt area, the region is about two and a half hours east of Vancouver and offers plenty of lakes for fly fishing.

The area is full of lakes, presenting anglers with plentiful opportunities to take advantage of. It can be quite difficult to tell which lake has the best populations of fish in these regions because all of them are worthwhile spots, with Rainbow Trout being the most popular target.

The best way to fly fish for trout in these parts is by fishing deep. All you need to do is anchor your boat, cast your fly line, and let it sink, retrieve, and wait patiently for the Rainbow Trout to strike.

You will only enjoy not only the fly fishing but also the amazing scenery that comes with Thompson – Nicola. The whole area is a rolling plateau with plenty of Ponderosa and Lodgepole Pine trees. You can also see bunches of free-range cattle grazing.

9. Elk River

The Elk River is among the best world-class fly fishing rivers and offers incredible opportunities to dry fly fish.

The Canadian Rockies surround the Elk River giving it a picturesque appeal. The river is nicknamed ‘Trout Town’ because it has huge populations of trout including Bull Trout and Cutthroat trout and it’s one of the wild BC rivers you have to fish.

If you are planning fly fishing trips for trout to this region near Vancouver, then you better plan them from July through October. According to the local fly anglers, the best way to fly fish here is by using floating lines on a 4 wt fly rod and dry fly fishing.

Choose your equipment correctly so that you don’t have to go back to the shop.

10. Dean River

The Dean is a treasure. It is one of the most well-managed rivers in the world. Located in Central BC, the Dean is popular for its population of Steelhead. Many anglers looking to catch Steelhead during their fly fishing trips end up here.

It also has many other fish varieties apart from Steelhead. These include Rainbow Trout, Salmon, and in the estuary – Ling Cod, and Halibut.

If you want to go on a fly fishing trip to Dean to catch Steelhead, plan it for later in the spring because at this time the Steelhead population will be passing through, with their second run happening just weeks later.

11. Williston Lake

This is the largest lake in BC, situated to the south of the province. It is a man-made lake that intercepts three rivers – the Parsnip, Finlay, and the Peace.

The Peace River offers great opportunities for fly fishing Kokanee salmon, Sockeye, Northern Pike, and Rainbow Trout. For accommodation, there is a lodge just by the lake that offers you guided trips.

Focus your casting effort around the tributaries and rivers that flow in for success and enjoy the lodge.

12. Victoria

If you are looking for fly fishing access to some of the best British Columbian salmon waters on the Pacific Ocean, Victoria is the best place to start. There are several other fish species around Victoria, including Halibut, Rockfish, and shellfish.

For some of the best fly fishing in Victoria, you should head over to Pedder Bay Marina or Oak Bay, Victoria’s Inner Harbour, and Ogden Point Breakwater.

British Columbia Fishing Licenses & Regulations

You will need a freshwater fishing license to fish in BC and then an additional tidal license to fish in any tidal area. The licenses can be bought as annual licenses or day licenses and are not expensive. You can buy them online or from a lodge or fly shop .

You will also need to buy the appropriate supplementary licenses and stamps depending on where you are fishing so be sure to check the specific regulations.

Proposed fishing closure puts B.C. community at risk, locals fear

Plan to extend orca foraging area would ruin port renfrew's crucial recreational fishing industry, guides say.

Social Sharing

Residents of a small fishing community in southern Vancouver Island are anxiously awaiting a decision about a fishing closure that they say will devastate the area's economy.

Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO) is proposing to expand an area off-limits to salmon fishing off the coast of Port Renfrew, B.C., a community that relies on fishing tourism.

DFO's goal is to protect foraging grounds for the endangered southern resident killer whales, whose diet is comprised almost exclusively of salmon . The final decision from DFO is expected later this month.

But many recreational fishing guides say the proposed measures would leave them no viable place left to fish for chinook salmon, which is the main reason tourists come to the area.

'It's not fair and it's not right': Port Renfrew fishing guides worry about proposed fishing closure

"If they keep closing everything down like they're doing, we'll be done," said Desmond Hatchard, a fishing guide for more than 15 years.

"I won't even be able to sell my boat because nobody will want it."

Hatchard is one of dozens of fishing guides in the community, which has a year-round population of about 250 people.

Chris Tucker, president of the local chamber of commerce, says the proposed regulations will have a "massive" economic impact on residents.

Once a logging community, Port Renfrew is now heavily dependent on recreational fishing and the hospitality sector that supports it. Tucker estimates fishing charters generate about $26 million for the local economy over the five-month fishing season, with tourists staying in local hotels and eating in local restaurants.

  • Federal whale-saving efforts threaten Vancouver Island livelihoods, say groups

This year's fishing season ramps up in less than a month and still the industry has no answers about where they'll be allowed to fish, said Tucker.

"I don't know of any other industry in Canada that is given such little notice, or no notice, of massive regulatory changes," said Tucker.

"We should not be discussing right now what the regulations will be in 2024. We should have known that for months, or a year."

Closure 'makes no sense': association

Some in the industry say they are frustrated by the DFO's lack of transparency about its scientific rationale.

"As a fisherman and a hunter, if sustainability was ever in question, I wouldn't do it,"  said Matt Wiley, who owns a sport-fishing charter company in Port Renfrew, adding that data shows there are "plenty of fish returning back to many rivers along the B.C. coast."

But conservation biologist Misty MacDuffee cautions against weighing too heavily on recent data on the abundance of chinook.

"The return last year to the Middle Fraser [River] … was extraordinarily strong," said MacDuffee, who works with the Raincoast Conservation Foundation and is the director of the foundation's wild-salmon program.

"But we don't know if that's going to happen again this year, we don't know what caused that; so, to use that one example of how chinook are recovering isn't really much evidence."

A graph showing chinook salmon returns to the Fraser River by year displays a huge spike in 2023.

In materials presented to the sport-fishing community Jan. 12, DFO mapped out important foraging areas for the southern resident killer whales.

Fishing is already off-limits in the Swiftsure Bank — around 40 kilometres west of Port Renfrew — and adjacent areas of the Juan de Fuca Strait. The DFO is now proposing to extend the closure right to the shoreline by Port Renfrew.

  • 'I am superbly worried': West Coast fishermen await decision on restrictions meant to protect orcas

But the fishing community rejects the modelling informing the map. Recreational fishers say they almost never see the endangered whales near the shoreline.

"For DFO to say it will shut an area down when southern residents are rarely there makes no sense, and is negligent," said Wayne Friesen, chair of the B.C. Recreational Fishing Association.

The MP for the area is sponsoring a petition in the House of Commons in support of the fishing guides. Alistair MacGregor, NDP MP for Cowichan–Malahat–Langford, says the DFO should listen to their expertise.

"The recreational fishing community wants to be part of the conversation and the conservation measures … but they are also looking to be able to retain a little bit of fish for themselves to keep what is an economic lifeline alive for a small coastal community like Port Renfrew," said MacGregor.

2023 WBPHS Field Report-Northern Alberta, Northeastern British Columbia, and Northwest Territories

view from an airplane of wetlands and a large river across the landscape

Eager to embark on our waterfowl-surveying journey , retired pilot-biologist Fred Roetker, and I waited in line to check out of the hotel in northern Minnesota before heading to the airport to load our aircraft for the trip to the Great White North. That’s when we heard a TV in the background of the hotel lobby and heard the news reporter begin the morning broadcast with alarm: “New evacuation orders in Alberta! Wildfires grow as thousands are displaced.” All our attention turned to the heartbreaking footage showing residents evacuating towns located along our survey route as fires raged in the background. At that moment, we knew we were in for a month of dynamic weather conditions and logistical considerations. A heat dome was impacting much of Alberta, the Northwest Territories, and British Columbia, drying out the landscape and providing favorable conditions for fire ignition. We made it to the airport, loaded the aircraft, conducted system checks, took one more look at the weather (clear but smoky!), and we were wheels up and northbound by noon.

After clearing customs, we weaved our way around smoke and airspace reserved for firefighting operations up to northern Alberta. As we began surveying, we were surprised to find that habitat conditions were fair to good, despite the unseasonably warm temperatures following less than average snowfall in the region. As we progressed northwards into the southern region of the Northwest Territories, we observed quite poor habitat conditions. Speaking with locals of Fort Simpson and Hay River, we learned that the winter was warm and little snow fell relative to average winters. Spring also came quick thanks to the aforementioned heat dome. This led to quick evaporation of water in ephemeral wetlands and some semi-permanent wetlands were noticeably recessional or even dry. That’s not the best news for breeding waterfowl. However, as our survey continued north out of the influence of the heat dome, we began to observe good-to-excellent conditions from around Norman Wells, Northwest Territories, up to the Arctic coast between the Mackenzie River delta and Paulatuk, Northwest Territories. Wetlands in this region can remain ice-locked deep into spring but they had already thawed this year, providing abundant opportunity to nesting waterfowl.

We completed our survey on June 5 th , but we were unable to immediately ferry south out of Norman Wells due to a welcomed, large frontal system that brought heavy rain to much of Alberta and the Northwest Territories. Once the weather cleared enough for us to head south, we noted the habitat conditions across much of the middle portion of the survey area had improved thanks to the ample rainfall. These recharged wetlands may provide suitable opportunities for late or re-nesting waterfowl.

While this survey season was riddled with operational complexity for Fred and me, we were humbled each day as we spoke with residents who had been displaced from their homes, some for over a month. We continue to admire the resilience, hospitality, and respect of nature that define our friends of the North. We pray for the safety of the firefighters, peace for those impacted, and continued rain to assist with fire suppression.
