5 Things to Know Before Your Buckingham Palace Tour

Buckingham Palace is one of the most iconic sights in Europe, and touring it should be on your London bucket list !

It is home to the British Royal Family and has been since 1837. While you normally can only see the outside of the palace, you are able to take a Buckingham Palace tour during the summer. 

The palace is normally open form mid-July to mid-September, and you can find specific dates at the Royal Trust Collection  website . You can sometimes take a Buckingham Palace tour in the winter months depending on whether the Queen will be in residence of not. You can find information regarding winter dates on the Royal Trust Collection website. It is open every summer when she is in Scotland though.

Taking a Buckingham Palace tour is exciting! You get a glimpse into how the British Royal Family lives, and it is an experience like no other. It is a super fun way to spend a few hours, but there are some things you should know before you go! These five tips will help you plan your trips, easily get into Buckingham, and follow the rules, so you don’t get kicked out!

1. Book Your Tickets Online in Advance

You should purchase your tickets  online in advance. As far in advance as possible! Buckingham Palace tour tickets are extremely popular and normally sell out in advance.

This is especially important if you’re visiting Buckingham Palace with kids . It’ll cut down on your wait time, so your kids don’t get tired of waiting or

You are able to select an entrance time when you purchase tickets online. The earlier you purchase tickets, the more likely you are to get an entry time that suits you. You run the risk of getting an entry time that is inconvenient or overlaps with other plans if you do not purchase tickets in advance.

You must arrive for your Buckingham Palace tour at the time listed on your ticket. It is not possible to enter the palace if you’re late, so make sure to be there on time!

I purchased my Buckingham Palace tour tickets five months in advance. My first choice in time slots on the day I was going was sold out, so I had to select my second choice. Obviously it isn’t a big deal to get a ticket for a half hour later, but that was five months in advance! You will have a very limited selection if you purchase only a few weeks before your tour.

Combination Tickets

You have the option of purchasing a combination ticket when you purchase your Buckingham Palace tour ticket. Combination tickets allow you entry to multiple attractions run by the Royal Trust at a slightly reduced fare.

You are able to get a combination ticket for other attractions such as the Royal Mews and The Queen’s Gallery.

You should consider purchasing a combination ticket if you plan on visiting multiple royal attractions. It won’t save you a lot of money, but you will save some!

2. Arrive Early

Since you’re not able to enter the palace if you’re late for your time slot, you want to get to the palace early. It is better to be a bit too early than to be late! It would be horrible to miss your tour and waste your money just because there was a delay in getting to Buckingham Palace.

You have an entry time on your ticket, but you should arrive at Buckingham Palace 15-30 minutes before your entry time. There is always a long queue to scan tickets and a security procedure that takes quite a while.

There are two sides to security in a tent after you scan your ticket. One side is for the current time slot and the other for the next time slot. You will be told what line you should join when your ticket is scanned.

The security guards are well-trained, so as long as you’re there with enough time to spare, you will have no problem getting to the proper security queue or getting into the palace on time.

3. The Entrance is on the Right-Hand Side of Buckingham Palace next to the Queen’s Gallery

The entrance for the Buckingham Palace tour is not at the front of the palace where the changing of the guards takes place. If you are facing Buckingham Palace with the Queen Victoria statue at your back, the entrance for the tour is to the right around the corner.

The entrance is part-way down the street when you turn right. If you reach the Queen’s Gallery, you have gone too far.

From my experience, there is normally a long queue of people waiting to enter Buckingham Palace and take their tour. You will likely come across the queue shortly after you turn right at the end of the palace. People often don’t believe the queue is for the Buckingham Palace tour because it is so long, but it is.

There will be a security guard walking up and down the queue occasionally calling for people with specific entry time tickets. If you’re at the back of the queue and you’re time gets called, let the security guard know, and s/he will bring you to the ticket scanning area.

People often show up to the tour way too early for their tour and will stand in the queue even if their tour isn’t for an hour. I guess people think they can get in early if they are there, but they can’t, so they end up standing around waiting for their time slot.

You should only leave the queue if you’re time slot is called, and you’re told to go to the front.

Closest Underground Stations

The London Underground is the most common and efficient way to get to your Buckingham Palace tour. It may be more efficient to walk to Buckingham Palace depending where in London you are staying, but, for the most part, you will likely take the Underground to the palace. Don’t forget to get an Oyster card to make using public transportation in London a breeze!

The 3 Underground stations that are closest to Buckingham Palace are:

• St. James’ Park

They are all relatively close and are less than a 10 minute walk from Buckingham Palace.

The station furtherest from the palace is St. James’ Park, but it has the most scenic walk. You walk through the gardens at St. James’ Park, and it is a very nice way to get into the mood for a royal Buckingham Palace tour. If you have the extra few minutes, I would recommend getting off at St. James’ Park.

4. Know What You’re Not Allowed to Bring on Your Buckingham Palace Tour

You shouldn’t be surprised to learn that there are quite a few things that you aren’t allowed to bring into Buckingham Palace.

Items You Can’t Bring into Buckingham Palace

Items that are not allowed into the palace will either be confiscated or checked and returned to you when you exit the palace.

Items such as food and drinks will be confiscated and items like luggage and backpacks need to be checked.

The security process goes a lot quicker if you have already gone through your personal items to ensure there are no banned items inside them. I had a protein bar, and it was confiscated, so the security guards take their job seriously and are through when they inspect your bags.

Other Banned Items

• You are not allowed to smoke or vape on your Buckingham Palace tour. Being caught smoking in the palace or in the gardens is grounds for removal from the property.
• I visited Buckingham Palace on a very rainy day. People with large umbrellas were asked to check them and retrieve them when they exited the tour. I had a small umbrella that fit in my purse and had no problems. You should make sure to have a small umbrella that can easily be put inside a small bag, so you don’t have to go through the hassle of checking it and retrieving it when you leave the palace.

5. How the Buckingham Palace Tour Works

The Buckingham Palace tour works the same as all the other Royal Trust tours. You get an audioguide that has in-depth information about the palace, and the tour is self-paced.

The tour is self-guided in the sense that there isn’t a tour guide personally showing you the palace. But there is a designated route you have to follow during the tour, and you can’t deviate from it or go back to another room you have already visited.

There is a lot of information provided on the audioguide, so you will be standing around quite a bit in each room. It is worth listening to all the information and not rushing through the tour. You paid a lot of money for the tour, so you should take advantage of every piece of information they give you!

There are also secondary parts to the audioguide. In every room you have the choice to go more in-depth on a specific item and learn more about it. The items are normally pieces of art or furniture.

You can skip these parts of the audioguide if you’re not interested in it. The core of the information is contained in the main portion of the audioguide.

You get to see a very limited number of rooms on the tour. The rooms you get to see are mainly common areas and banquet halls. You don’t get to see any personal rooms so don’t expect to sneak a peak into the Queen’s bedchamber!

The rooms you are allowed to tour are spectacular and well worth the ticket cost.

The Buckingham Palace tour is the perfect option for any royal fan that is visiting London during the summer months. It gives you a small peak into how the royal family lives, and you leave with a lot more information than you had before you entered.

You need to make sure you follow the palace rules and arrive early to make the most out of your tour! You will also have a much more enjoyable tour if you purchase your tickets online months in advance. It would be a shame to not be able to take the tour just because tickets were sold out!

All in all, I would highly recommend the Buckingham Palace tour for any royal fan! It is truly the height of royal tourism and worth every pence you spend on it.

Buckingham Palace, the official residence of the British sovereign since Queen Victoria and her brood took up residence in 1837, has had a rather checkered career as a Royal residence. It was so unloved at one point that it was offered to the nation as a temporary House of Parliament. But today it's one of the most iconic attractions in all of the United Kingdom. Tourist experiences at Buckingham Palace can range from a casual viewing of the Changing of the Guards to a tour of the interior of the palatial complex. Here's what you need to know to plan your visit.

History of Buckingham Palace

In the early 17th century, during the reign of King James 1, son of Mary Queen of Scots, the land where Buckingham Palace and the Palace Garden now stands was a mulberry plantation for one of many doomed attempts to rear silkworms in Europe.

The land, now between Green Park and St. James's Park, already had a house on it when it was given to a nobleman in 1628. For the next 70 years, it passed from one noble resident to another until given to the Duke of Buckingham. He built a new house on the site and it became known as Buckingham House. 

The original Buckingham House cost £7,000 to build. A trifle when you consider that it is undergoing a £370 million, 10-year-long "essential" refurbishment that began in 2017.

The house first became a royal residence, though not an official palace, in 1762 when King George III bought it for his wife, Queen Charlotte, and children. Renovations undertaken then included fabulous ceilings designed by Scottish architect Robert Adam. 

When King George IV ascended to the throne, Buckingham House was still just a very big house. The king wanted a palace and employed the famous Regency court architect John Nash to give him one during the last five years of his life. Nash spent so much money (about £470,000) that as soon as the king died, the Prime Minister fired him.

Various other architects had a hand in renovations but when the next monarch, George III's brother William IV, became king the house was unfurnished and unloved. William refused to move in.

And then came Queen Victoria

William had a phenomenal number of illegitimate children but no legitimate heir, so the throne was then inherited by his niece, Victoria and her considerable family. In no time at all, Buckingham House, now officially Buckingham Palace, was too small. The parade of architects continued and the Brighton Pavilion was sold to fund the addition of a new wing for £53,000. The central balcony, familiar to watchers of royal weddings, was added then. And the Triumphal Arch, designed by Nash, was moved to the northeast corner of Hyde Park where it is now known as Marble Arch.

So, if behind its 19th century facade and early 20th century Portland stone cladding (George V), Buckingham Palace seems a bit of a hodgepodge, now you know why.

Visiting Buckingham Palace

The State Rooms of the palace have only been opened to the public since 1993, and then only during a limited period from mid July to the end of September. The public showings of "Buck House" were initially intended as a way to raise funds to repair Windsor Castle after a disastrous fire in 1992. It turned out it was so popular that the Queen continued to allow visitors every summer. Don't expect to catch a glimpse of Queen Elizabeth or member of the Royal Family on your visit, though. When the palace is open to the public she goes to one of her country residences or makes her annual visit to the Palace of Holyroodhouse in Edinburgh.

And you're not likely to see much of real life at the palace. Buckingham Palace as 775 rooms, including 19 State rooms that are included in a visit. The State rooms are where the Queen and members of the Royal Family receive guests on State, ceremonial and official occasions. The rest - 52 Royal and guest bedrooms, 188 staff bedrooms, 92 offices and 78 bathrooms - is strictly off limits.

What you will see is a series of extremely grand chambers filled with many of the treasures of the Royal Collection; paintings by Rembrandt, Rubens, and Canaletto; beautiful examples of English and French furniture and much more. Highlights include:

• The White Drawing Room - considered the most magnificent of the reception rooms. Look out for a fabulous rolltop desk and a gilded piano provided for Queen Victoria.
• The Throne Room  - Who knew there were so many different thrones. Under a dramatic arch and canopy - designer John Nash was influenced by theater design - are the pair of Chairs of Estate used by the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh during the Coronation in 1953. The chair was used before the Queen was anointed and crowned. Another throne, kept and displayed at Windsor Castle was used after. The room also has Queen Victoria's throne and chairs used by George VI and Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother. Surprisingly, before 1910, furniture used in the Coronation ceremony was sold to the guests, so there are no earlier thrones here.
• The Picture Gallery  This is where candidates about to be honored with knighthoods and other official honors wait before being invited into the ballroom for the investiture ceremony. While they're waiting, they can look at paintings from the Queen's collection, which are changed from time to time.
• The Ballroom  The largest of the State rooms is used for state banquets and investitures. It has a musicians' gallery, complete with an organ. The most striking feature of this room is the Throne Canopy, designed by Lutyens. It is topped by a triumphal arch, with winged statues - symbolizing History and Fame - and supporting a medallion with profiles of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert. The thrones beneath it were used in the coronation of Edward VII and Queen Alexandra in 1902. This room was styled, frankly, to knock your socks off. And depending upon where you stand on such things, it will either have the desired effect or you will think it demonstrates the worst excesses of Victorian design. The jury is out on that one.

After your tour of the 19 rooms, you can wander about in the gardens or have a light bite - tea and coffee, sandwiches and cakes - in the Garden Cafe.

Visitor Essentials

• When:  Buckingham Palace is open to the public from mid-July to the end of September and then for private tours on selected dates in the winter. In 2019, the Annual Summer Opening is from 9:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. from Saturday, July 20 to Saturday, August 31 and to 6:30 p.m. through Sunday, September 29.
• Where: Between Green Park and St James's Park in Central London. The Palace is located at the juncture of two processional roads - Constitution Hill, which runs from Hyde Park Corner and the Wellington Arch to the Palace and The Mall (rhymes with the name Al,) which runs from the Palace to the Admiralty Arch and Trafalgar Square.
• By Train: Victoria Station and Charing Cross are the nearest rail stations. Check National Rail Enquiries for times and ticket prices. 
• ​By London Underground:  The nearest London Underground Stations are Victoria, Hyde Park Corner, and St James's Park Green Park and St James's Park. Check Transport for London to plan a journey. 
• By Bus: Bus numbers 11, 211, C1 and C10 all stop on Buckingham Palace Road, a short walk from the Palace entrance and other attractions. Victoria Coach Station, for longer distance coach arrivals, is about a ten minute walk.
• Prices - From January 1, 2019 through December 31, 2019, here are the prices for Standard Admission: Adult tickets cost £25; student or senior tickets are £22.8; children from 5 to 17 and the disabled cost £14 and children under 5 are free. Family tickets for two adults and up to three children are also available.
• How to Buy - Tickets are sold for timed entry at intervals of 15 minutes apart. They are available on the day at the Palace but as the entry can be busy during the annual opening, visitors are advised to buy their tickets in advance - either at the Palace ticket office or online . 
• Combination Tickets: To make the most of your visit, Royal Day Out tickets are available that can be used for three attractions. In addition to the Buckingham Palace State Rooms, this combination ticket provides entry to the Royal Mews, where the Royal carriages and horses are kept, and to the Queen's Gallery. What Else is Nearby

The Royal Mews  claims to be "one of the finest working stables in existence." I have no way to judge that claim, but it is fun to visit. The Royal Mews is responsible for all the road transportation of the Queen and Royal Family. The includes care of the many elaborate carriages of state, the horses that pull them and also the Queen's cars. You can visit this as part of a Royal Day Out ticket (see above) or separately. The Royal Mews are open between February and November, so most of the year except for the winter holiday season.

The Queen's Gallery is located alongside Buckingham Palace on Buckingham Palace RoadIt features changing works from the Royal Collection - paintings, furniture, decorative objects. In the summer of 2018, a special exhibition celebrates Splendors of the Subcontinent - art from India and the Mughal Empire. This gallery can be included on a Royal Day Out ticket - as above - or separately. The Gallery is open year round except for planned closures, listed on the website, for changing the exhibitions. 

Clarence House   is just off the Mall and down the road from Buckingham Palace. It was built during the reign of George III for his third son, the Duke of Clarence. It was the Queen Mother's home for more than five decades and is currently the official residence of the Prince of Wales and Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall. Normally, it can be visited during the month of August. But the Clarence House will be closed to visitors all of 2019 for maintenance work. The expected re-opening date is August 2020.

One Word of Warning

The official Buckingham Palace website indicates that, if you have your ticket is stamped at the end of your visit, it will be good for unlimited visits for the whole year. That is seriously misleading  because Buckingham Palace is simply not open for a full year. It is open from mid-July to the end of September. If you buy a Royal Day Out ticket, the other attractions on it are open year round, but "Buck House" is not. Just be aware of that to avoid disappointment.

“Pussycat, pussycat, where have you been? I’ve been to London to look at the queen!” These are the starting words of a traditional children’s nursery rhyme. And it’s not only nursery-rhyme cats interested in attractions associated with the royal family.

Buckingham Palace , the King’s official London residence and the administrative headquarters of the British monarchy, is one of London’s top 10 attractions according to Visit London . Visitors can watch the Changing of the Guard, tour the State Rooms, visit the Royal Mews, see changing art exhibitions, or simply enjoy views of Buckingham Palace and the Queen Victoria Monument from adjoining Green Park .

Buckingham Palace has served as the official London residence of British sovereigns since 1837 when Queen Victoria made it her home. But the property’s Royal Family history goes back to 1761 when George III bought Buckingham House for his wife Queen Charlotte.

Where Is Buckingham Palace?

Buckingham Palace sits at the intersection of The Mall, Constitution Hill, and Spur Road off Birdcage Walk in the City of Westminster in central London. The Palace is surrounded by gardens and green space on three sides. St. James’s Park sits on the east side and Green Park on the north side. Royal gardens run behind the Palace to the west. A number of London tourist attractions, including Westminster Abbey, the Churchill War Rooms, and Trafalgar Square, lie within a one-mile radius of the palace.

The Wellington Arch , a large stone archway flanked with Corinthian columns and topped with the largest bronze sculpture in Europe, sits at the western end of Constitution Hill at Hyde Park Corner. Originally built as the outer entrance to Buckingham Palace, the arch was moved to its current location in the 1880s. You can purchase tickets to get inside the arch, where rooms over five stories house historical exhibitions and balconies offer views of Buckingham Palace’s back gardens and London’s Royal Parks.

How To Get To Buckingham Palace

Buckingham Palace’s central location is easily reached by the Underground, by train, and by coach/bus.

How To Get To Buckingham Palace By Subway

London’s subway system, known as the London Underground or by its nickname, the Tube, is fast and efficient. The nearest Underground stops to Buckingham Palace are Victoria, Green Park, St. James’s Park, and Hyde Park Corner.

It’s roughly an 11-minute walk to Buckingham Palace from Victoria Station, an 8-minute walk from Green Park Station or St. James’s Park Station, and a 12-minute walk from Hyde Park Corner Station.

How To Get To Buckingham Palace By Train

The National Rail System is a passenger train network connecting London with the rest of the country. You might use this system to get to Buckingham Palace if you are coming from outside of the Greater London area serviced by the Underground. London Victoria and Charing Cross Station are the nearest train stations to Buckingham Palace.

How To Get To Buckingham Palace By Coach Or Bus

Bus numbers 11, 211, C1 and C10 stop on Buckingham Palace Road. Victoria Coach Station is a 10-minute walk from the Palace. Use Transport for London’s Plan a Journey page to determine which bus to take from your starting location.

Buckingham Palace is also a stop on some hop-on, hop-off tourist buses.

When Is The Best Time To Visit Buckingham Palace?

If you want to get inside Buckingham Palace, summer is the best time to visit. Although the State Rooms at Buckingham Palace are open to visitors for a few selected dates in winter and spring, the primary touring time is in summer.

Summer also offers the best weather for viewing the Changing of the Guard . Of course, summer is the busiest tourist season and you will be jostling amongst a crowd for the best views. Bundle up or pack a poncho, and you can see the Changing of the Guard throughout the year.

The Royal Mews is open February through November. Guided tours are offered between April and October. The Royal Mews is responsible for all the road travel arrangements for the King and the Royal Family. Inside you’ll find historic carriages, a stable of horses, and livery worn by the King’s horsemen. Note that the Royal Mews are part of a working royal palace and closures sometimes happen at short notice.

The Queen’s Gallery is a public art gallery that features changing exhibitions from the Royal Collection featuring old master paintings, rare furniture, decorative arts, and photographic images. The Queen’s Gallery is open year-round.

When Is The Changing Of The Guard?

The Changing of the Guard is a ceremony in which the King’s Guards, clad in scarlet uniforms and bearskin caps, hand off responsibility for protecting Buckingham Palace. The guards are Foot Guards, or highly trained infantry soldiers.

The ceremony, which is free to watch, takes place on the forecourt of Buckingham Palace. Formation of the guards in preparation for the ceremony begins around 10:30 a.m. when the Buckingham Palace Old Guard lines up for inspection, the St. James Old Guard begins its march down The Mall, and the New Guard forms on the parade square at Wellington Barracks. Guards and bands start arriving at Buckingham Palace at 10:45 a.m. The actual handover, when the New Guard enters the forecourt via the North Gate and receives the Palace Keys, occurs at 11 a.m. sharp. This is followed by marches of the Old and New Guards. The ceremony takes approximately 45 minutes. Musical accompaniment is provided by a regimental band or corps of drums.

The Changing of the Guard is popular. It is recommended you arrive before 10:15 a.m. to get a good viewing spot. The Buckingham Palace railings are a good spot with visibility of the entire forecourt ceremony, but you need to arrive very early to situate yourself here.

The elevated position of the steps of the Victoria Monument also provides a reasonable view. Spur Road on the left facing Buckingham Palace is a good place to see the New Guard and Band marching up Birdcage Walk. Remember to “make way for the King’s Guard!” and not stand in the way of the Foot Guards.

Although the Changing of the Guard occurs several times a week, it is not scheduled everyday. Check the Changing of the Guard schedule before you plan your visit.

How To Tour The Inside of Buckingham Palace

Buckingham Palace has 775 rooms, including 240 Royal, guest, and staff bedrooms, 92 offices, 78 bathrooms, and 19 State rooms. The State Rooms inside Buckingham Palace are open to visitors for 10 weeks each summer and on selected dates during winter and spring. The King’s private living spaces are not open to the public.

The State Rooms are the public rooms in the palace where the King and members of the Royal Family receive and entertain guests on ceremonial and official occasions. Rooms you will tour after entering via the opulent, red-carpeted Grand Staircase include the White Drawing Room, the Throne Room, the Ballroom, and the Picture Gallery.

Each year the Royal Collection Trust , the organization that manages public openings of the official residences of His Majesty the King, curates a special exhibit for the summer opening at Buckingham Palace. In 2019, Queen Victoria’s Palace held an exhibition to honor the 200th anniversary of Queen Victoria’s birth, telling the story of how the young queen transformed Buckingham Palace from a private house into a working royal residence.

You need to purchase tickets for the State Rooms tour in advance. Tickets can be booked online. Arrive at least 10 minutes before your entry time. You will go through airport-style security. Complimentary multimedia guides are provided. Photographs are not allowed. Wear comfortable shoes as there is a fair bit of walking involved. The Royal Collection Trust recommends you allow up to 2 hours and 30 minutes for your State Rooms tour. One of the available ticketing options allows you to add a 45-minute guided tour of Buckingham Palace Gardens to your State Rooms visit.

Can I See The King At Buckingham Palace?

The nursery-rhyme cat may have had a look at the queen, but you are unlikely to see the now King when you visit Buckingham Palace. State Room tours are scheduled when the King is not in residence. When the King is at home at Buckingham Palace, you’ll see his flag, the Royal Standard, flying from the flagpole on top of the palace.

Well, firstly, you ought to know that the State Rooms open their doors to the world from July to October . So if you definitely want to step inside the royal world of Buckingham Palace, there’s no other option but during those (usually) busy months.

Now, when it comes to avoiding the crowds, the trick lies in planning. The best way to achieve it is by visiting on a weekday and picking the earliest time slot possible for your tour . This means shortly after opening time – typically around 9:30 am.

Known officially as the ‘Guard Mounting’, it involves the current King’s Guard handing over the responsibility of protecting Buckingham Palace and St. James’s Palace to the incoming New Guard.

It typically takes place on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays, and Sundays (and every day in summer) from 10:45am, and it last around 45 minutes. However, the schedules are not set in stone and can sometimes change at short notice; so it’s always good to confirm beforehand .

And please arrive with plenty of time to catch a good spot! This is a very popular activity in London, so it gets busy, busy.

Changing of the Guard Walking Tour

Price: From $13

Duration: 2 to 3 hours

Standout perk: Witness the pomp of the iconic Changing the Guard ceremony.

Watch the Royal Guard march toward Buckingham Palace as you witness this historic, quintessentially British spectacle on a two-hour tour of Westminster's highlights. Accompanied by a military band, you'll see the Old Guard (soldiers on duty) switch to the New Guard as they arrive at the palace from Wellington Barracks. Your guide will explain which regiment is which, before taking you on a guided walking tour past other world-famous, attractions, including Big Ben, Clarence House, the Houses of Parliament , St James's Palace and Westminster Abbey .

Recent travelers gave high ratings to the tour, saying guides were able to take them to the best photo spots for the ceremony, while offering a wealth of historical and entertaining insight.

Tours leave at 10 a.m. and depart from the corner of Piccadilly and Arlington Street (between The Ritz and The Wolseley), ending at Parliament Square.

Local tip: Look at the Horse Guards Clock on the Horse Guards Parade – the official entrance to Buckingham Palace and St James's Palace – to see a dark stain above the 2 (II, in Roman numerals). It marks the time King Charles I was executed outside the Palace of Whitehall in 1649, after being charged with treason.

Windsor Castle & Buckingham Palace Tour

This twin-castle tour offers the opportunity to enter Buckingham Palace and see its State Rooms, Royal Collection artwork and other treasures, with commentary from an audio guide. After you've toured the palace, you'll travel by coach about 25 miles west of London to Windsor Castle – the oldest and largest occupied castle in the world, and the family home of the monarchy for more than 900 years. Explore the castle's lavish State Apartments and grounds, and visit St George's Chapel – the burial place of Queen Elizabeth II alongside many other monarchs, and the spot where Prince Harry married Meghan Markle. Recent travelers said the tour was a great opportunity to see inside both palaces. Several commented on the extensive art collection at Buckingham Palace, and many enjoyed hearing insights from the guides, although some complained about long lines. The tour takes place from July through September on select Mondays, Thursdays and Saturdays, and leaves from Victoria Coach Station at 7:45 a.m. Local tip: Windsor Castle has its own Changing the Guard ceremony, as well as its own extensive art collection – the ceremony takes place at 11 a.m. on select days of the week.

Full-day London with Changing of the Guard and Private Cruise

Price: From $158; with optional London Eye or Harrods cream tea for an additional fee

Duration: 9 hours

Standout perk: You'll see many of London's key attractions in one day, and enjoy a river cruise thrown in for good measure.

If you want to combine a visit to see Buckingham Palace's Changing the Guard ceremony with stops at several other London spots, this is a great choice. The full-day trip begins at the UNESCO listed Tower of London where you'll have the chance to see the crown jewels.

From here you'll visit Buckingham Palace to witness the famous pomp and pageantry of the ceremony, and get the chance to admire the palace's impressive architecture from the outside. The day includes a tour of the elaborate St. Paul's Cathedral (not available on Sundays), before embarking on a boat tour of the Thames, passing key attractions including Tower Bridge and Shakespeare's Globe. The day also includes a photo stop at Westminster Abbey, where Prince William and Kate Middleton married in 2011, and a brief walking tour of Parliament Square. Travelers can choose to add a ride on the famous London Eye observation wheel (or opt for a quintessentially British cream tea at Harrods instead).

Recent travelers loved the tour and praised the guides as highly knowledgeable and entertaining. Many were impressed with how much they saw in a day and said it gave them a great introduction to London (although it's worth noting a few felt there was quite a bit of walking involved).

Tours leave from Victoria Coach Station at 7:45 a.m. and finish at the London Eye.

Local tip: If you fancy delving deeper into the Tower of London in your own time, book a ticket to see the Ceremony of the Keys. Dating back seven centuries, this nightly ceremony is when the castle gets locked up for the night, with a special exchange between the sentry and Yeoman Warder taking place at 9:30 p.m. between the atmospheric battlements – both eerie and magical.

The London Essentials Bike Tour

This half-day guided cycling tour is a great option to get active on your London trip. You'll start at Kensington Gardens – the home of Kensington Palace, where Princess Diana lived with the now King Charles, and Queen Victoria's birthplace. From here, pedal to the Royal Albert Hall to check out this elaborate concert hall, opened by Queen Victoria in 1871. Local tip: If you've got time after the tour, it's well worth exploring Kensington Palace a bit more. Admire the elaborate, Georgian-era King's Staircase and the King's State Gallery with its fine art collection, see the Queen's State Apartments where Mary II would come to relax or welcome guests, and visit the Sunken Garden, once a favorite spot of Princess Diana's. After, enjoy afternoon tea or lunch at the Kensington Palace Pavilion amid the gardens.

Tips for visiting Buckingham Palace with kids

One of London’s most iconic sights, there’s only a 10-week period each year when you can get a look inside the monarch’s official London residence – so I’ve pulled together these tips for visiting Buckingham Palace with kids (or without) to make the most of it.

The East Wing of Buckingham Palace will be open to visitors for the first time this summer, when special guided tours will also be available in July and August, giving you an added incentive to book, if you’re planning to take the tour of the Buckingham Palace state rooms. The home of the British royal family since Queen Victoria moved in in 1837, it’s still a working palace with the ornate rooms used for state events and a rare chance to glimpse the gilded splendour behind the famous facade. So if you’re planning to visit Buckingham Palace with kids, here’s everything you need to know.

Should you visit Buckingham Palace with kids?

A tour of the State Rooms isn’t the cheapest thing to do in London with kids , so the first question to answer must be, is Buckingham Palace family-friendly?

And you can absolutely visit Buckingham Palace with kids – with a few provisos.

Personally I think this is somewhere that’s better for school age kids and older. There’s a great free family multimedia tour and family activities in the gardens but otherwise it’s (understandably) not very hands on.

For older kids, getting to see inside a palace and its impressive rooms, imagining kings, queens and mischievous corgis as they go, it’s fantastic. But the thought of chasing a bored toddler who wants to run off, while surrounded by priceless art and furniture makes my blood run cold.

Having said that, there’s nothing to stop you bringing younger kids in and I did see one young toddler during my visit, so it’s certainly possible – just be prepared to go round faster than you might like.

Do check out the interactive map online before you visit, to give kids a taste of what they’re going to see as well, and explore the palace virtually. There’s also a list of 10 highlights to spot , which makes a fun treasure hunt.

You can’t use your own buggy/stroller – these have to be checked at the start of the tour and collected at the end – while toilets and baby changing facilities are only available at the end of the tour.

You can’t eat or drink inside the palace (except for bottled water), although you can breastfeed anywhere, and there are benches in some of the rooms.

Do you have to prebook tickets?

You don’t have to, tickets may be available on the day, but as the Buckingham Palace state rooms are only open for part of the year, it’s a good idea to book in advance.

There’s also a discount if you prebook tickets online – currently from £30 for adults, £16.50 for children aged 5-17, under fives go free.

You can also convert tickets into a one year pass, if you think you might return within 12 months.

There’s a family discount which is automatically applied if you book at least one adult and two children, up to two adults and four children, saving up to £24 when you book direct .

Tickets have a 15-minute time slot, and you’re asked to arrive at the time shown on your ticket.

When are the Buckingham Palace state rooms open?

The main public opening runs for 10 weeks from mid July to late September. This year’s opening dates are July 11-September 29, 2024.

The Palace is closed on Tuesdays and Wednesdays during September but otherwise open seven days a week. Opening time is 9.30am and last entry is 17.15 during the summer months (with the palace closing at 19.30), and at 16.15 in September (with the palace closing at 18.30)

Where’s the entrance to the Buckingham Palace tour?

You won’t get to go through the grand gates at the front, sadly. Instead the entrance for the summer opening of the Buckingham Palace state rooms is on Buckingham Palace road.

If you’re standing looking at the front of the palace, simply head round to the left, follow Spur Road to Buckingham Palace Road, and you won’t be able to miss the entrance, with staff checking tickets before security.

The closest underground stations are Victoria, Green Park and St James’s Park. If you’re walking from Victoria station, just follow Buckingham Palace Road from the station past the entrance for the Royal Mews and the King’s Gallery and you’ll see it on the left.

Be prepared for security

You’ll need to pass through airport style security with bag searches and X-ray, although this was very quick and efficient.

If you’re visiting with Buckingham Palace with kids, you can’t bring a buggy/stroller into the state rooms, so will need to leave that at the start of the tour and collect it at the end in the gardens.

You can’t bring large bags (or various other items including bikes, folding bikes and rollerskates) in at all, while some other items need to be left and collected after the tour, such as large umbrellas (smaller fold-up ones that go in your bag are fine).

Do get the audio guide

The audioguide is included in your ticket, in nine languages, plus British Sign Language (as well as a descriptive tour for the blind and visually impaired). There is very little information in the rooms otherwise, so without the guide, you’ll miss most of the detail.

You can choose the adult version or the family multimedia tour (and it’s easy to flick between the two if you do want to hear bits of both).

I started off alternating between the different options, but switched to the family audio a few rooms in, as it did a great job of bringing the state rooms to life, picking out quirky details and adding some fun elements.

The tour is narrated by footman Alice, along with Rex the corgi, and is aimed at kids under 12. Having said that, it still packs in similar amounts of information to the adult tour, just in a more easily digestible fashion.

There are also some fun games for kids to play – I’m ashamed to say it took me three attempts to correctly set a table – as well as details to spot in the rooms, challenges and other interactive fun.

One highlight was being asked to spot the secret door in the White Drawing Room: closed during our visit (it’s normally ajar), it really wasn’t easy to spot but led to a great conversation with the member of staff in the room – and also the discovery that one other set of more obvious doors are fakes, designed to balance the room, with nothing but wall behind them.

You won’t be able to take photos inside

For once, you can put phones and cameras away, as photos aren’t permitted inside the state rooms – only in the gardens at the end of the tour.

We were also given permission to photograph the Coronation Exhibition and Diamond Jubilee coach which was in the courtyard but ordinarily that wouldn’t be allowed either.

Don’t be tempted to sneak a few snaps – staff were keeping a close eye on all visitors and reminding them if they had phones out, so if you’re caught, you may well be escorted out.

Allow plenty of time

There are 14 rooms with multimedia guide commentary during the tour of the state rooms at Buckingham Palace, quite apart from the chance to explore some of the gardens.

Allow at least two hours for your visit, more if you want to enjoy the activities in the family pavilion at the end, or visit the cafe.

You can go at your own pace though, so if you feel inclined to linger – or if your kids are going to get bored after around an hour – you can speed up and slow down as you want.

What can you see in the state rooms at Buckingham Palace?

The tour of the Buckingham Palace state rooms takes you through 14 separate rooms with audioguide commentary.

Starting in the Grand Hall and climbing the Grand Staircase, you’ll visit the Green Drawing Room, the Throne Room, the Picture Gallery, the East Gallery, the Ballroom, the State Dining Room, the Blue Drawing Room, the Music Room, the White Drawing Room, the Marble Hall and the Bow Room.

Needless to say, it’s impossible to capture every detail in a blog post, especially one focused on tips for visiting Buckingham Palace; you need to go on the tour to really appreciate it. But expect huge rooms, priceless art, lots of gold and ornamentation, and impressive decor as you go!

To pick out a few highlights, you can spot everything from a delicate pot pourri holder in the shape of a ship, one of only 12 ever made by Sevres (and one of only 10 still in existence) right up to the thrones embroidered with the King and Queen’s cyphers and some fake marble columns.

The art in the picture gallery is just a small fraction of the million works in the royal collection – which also includes sculpture, furniture and other artworks – including everything from Rubens, Rembrandt and Vermeer to Canaletto and Van Dyck.

There are also some insights into royal family life as you stroll through the long East Gallery, whose carefully placed mirrors make it seem to stretch on forever.

Built for Queen Victoria, along with the ballroom, to allow her to host balls for up to two thousand guests, the walls are covered with portraits of the Queen and her family – with a reminder in the family audio guide that Victoria was only 19 when she was crowned, a year after she inherited the throne.

Or the jaw-dropping information that the table in the state dining room can be extended so it’s as long as a cricket pitch – and the spare leaves are stored in one of the many secret rooms and cupboards in the palace, tucked away behind mirrored doors.

There’s modern-day trivia too – seeing the room where the current Prince of Wales was baptised, or learning how to clean a chandelier – as well as information about the palace itself, from the number of staff (around 800) to the number of lightbulbs (around 40,000).

My favourite was perhaps the White Drawing Room (actually far more gold and yellow), which has fake doors, real doors and that secret door to find…

What is the Coronation exhibition at Buckingham Palace?

EDIT: Now closed The new Coronation exhibition included the outfits worn by King Charles III and Queen Camilla at the coronation in May 2023, on display for the first time.

Staged in the ballroom – which was used for Coronation rehearsals – the grand robes with their embroidered trains were joined by other items of regalia, as well as the Throne Chairs and the Anointing Screen used during the ceremony.

There was also the chance to see sketches for the invitations, alongside one of the finished creations, plus other symbolic items including the Coronation glove and girdle, not to mention the diamond necklace worn by the Queen Consort.

It was fascinating to get chance to see some of the gold embroidery up close, hand embroidered by the Royal School of Needlework at Hampton Court Palace, with personal touches as well as more symbolic emblems – something even the best TV coverage of the day couldn’t provide.

The exhibition ran until September 24, 2023, when the State Rooms closed to the public. The Diamond Jubilee State Coach was also be on display as you enter the courtyard before heading inside the state rooms themselves but can now been seen in the Royal Mews.

If you buy a Royal Day Out ticket , also including entry to the Royal Mews, you can see the historic Gold State Coach – among other royal coaches and carriages – which carried the King back to Buckingham Palace from Westminster Abbey

Will you see the royal family?

Sadly not – or not unless you’re very lucky. Traditionally, the royal family heads to their Scottish home of Balmoral for the summer, so they’re away from London while the state rooms are open – and King Charles has confirmed he’ll be continuing the tradition, as Queen Elizabeth did.

In any case, the tour takes you though the public state rooms rather than the private rooms, so even if members of the royal family are in residence, they’ll be elsewhere in the huge palace.

You can check before you go in: if the monarch is in residence, the royal standard will be flying, otherwise you’ll see the union flag above the palace, if the royal family is at another residence such as Windsor Castle or Sandringham .

Don’t miss the family pavilion

If you’re visiting Buckingham Palace with kids, do save time to check out the family pavilion in the gardens.

You’ll find it just after the point where you return the multimedia guides and there are some great activities for kids.

There’s a small soft play area for the youngest visitors, as well as tables with crafts and activities. You’ll also find a dressing up box, lots of chances to pose for photos, and other games and quizzes to test kids on their royal knowledge.

You can also download a garden trail, colouring and drawing activities from the Royal Collection Trust website, plus there are sometimes additional events for families .

Save time to enjoy the gardens

The path from the palace to the exit on Grosvenor Palace leads through the gardens, with a view back to Buckingham Palace over the lake.

You are limited to where you can explore in the gardens however – the lawns are roped off, for example – so you can’t spend long wandering and you do need to keep to the paths.

What facilities are there at Buckingham Palace?

Most of the facilities for visitors are towards the end of the tour, including toilets and baby changing in the gardens.

If you are visiting Buckingham Palace with kids, it’s worth finding toilets before you head inside – there are public toilets at Victoria station – as it’s likely to be over an hour before you reach the gardens (and you can’t leave and retrace your steps). And no, you can’t use the king’s bathroom on the way!

In the main block in the gardens, there are family toilets and very nice handwash though. Arrangements can be made for visitors with disabilities, but you’re asked to contact the specialist sales team in advance.

There’s also a cafe in the gardens, as well as stands serving ice cream and drinks – keep an eye out for the coronation ice cream (which is red, white and blue), although sadly it wasn’t on sale during our visit.

There’s no eating and drinking inside the palace (apart from bottled water).

You’ll also find the shop along the path through the gardens on your way out if you want a special souvenir of your visit – fluffy corgis are an option!

Can you visit the state rooms at Buckingham Palace at any other time?

Yes, there are limited chances to explore the Buckingham Palace state rooms outside the main summer opening, with guided tours running on selected dates from November to May.

These cost £95 per person, or there are also Family Guided Tours available where tickets for adults children aged 5-17 cost £60, and under 5s are free.

If you are joining a guided tour, you’ll enter through the Royal Mews and there are toilet facilities available at the start as well as the end of the tour. You’re also asked to arrive 30 minutes before the entry time on your ticket, and will have to go through a similar security process as the self-guided tour.

Tours usually take around 90 minutes to two hours, and the other restrictions (such as no photos inside) remain the same. The family tours lasts one hour.

Apart from that, you’d need a personal invitation from a member of the royal family or be invited to an official event to get in!

What else is there to do near Buckingham Palace with kids?

You’re in easy walking distance of both St James’s Park, with its pelicans (and a lovely view of the palace from the Blue Bridge) and of Green Park if your kids need to run off some energy.

You could also combine a visit with the Changing of the Guard ceremony , or a chance to see the guards at Horseguards Parade.

Throughly enjoyed our visit this week,with a mixed adult and child coach trip. Sadly no changing of the guard on this Saturday, which, was disappointing for the youngsters. Very efficient entrance route, no waiting, staff friendly and helpful. Easy to use audio guide, comfortable head phones. Able to stroll through the Palace at your own pace, lots of staff offering advice and additional information. Loved the White dinning room. We called into the cafe for a pot of tea as we were leaving oh my gosh ! Prices for a slice of cake, cream tea or a child’s food “box” were so expensive. Likewise the gift shop, almost £9 for a pencil with plastic crown on the top we all left empty handed. St James’s Park was a delight, lots of delightful places for refreshments and to sit and watch the antics of the wildlife. It was a great day, throughly enjoyed it.

Glad you had a great day – it is a lot of fun for kids (although I saw a few eye-watering prices in the gift shop). A shame it didn’t coincide with the changing of the guard, but sadly that never takes place on Saturdays – a good excuse to come back again?

How To Get To Buckingham Palace

Alternatively, you could take a cab, but this can take a lot longer than the Tube due to traffic. If you don’t mind walking, the palace is within walking distance of several hotels in Westminster. Are there size restrictions for bags or backpacks, I understand there are no phone to be taken inside, but can you still bring the camera if it is in a bag?

You can take your phone in but no photos allowed

You are watched from every angle by staff and also cameras so don't risk taking a photo or you will be asked to leave. Such a shame you can't take photos though isn't it.

It’s like the airport security. You can take you bag when scanned or leave it.

You can take phones and cameras but can’t use them until you get into the Gardens.

Really enjoyed and thought it was good value.

Seems hundreds of people when you queue for security, once inside you go at your own pace and never felt too crowded.

I only took a handbag - no backpack and definitely No photos inside the Palace. Got to keep my phone and camera in my bag:

There us airport style security but I carried a back pack with my SLR camera in etc. through the palace. No photos are allowed inside.

I would say average size day bags like rucksacks & hand bags were fine. All bags are searched and yes phones / cameras can’t be used inside the Palace but ok outside and in gardens at the end of the tour.

King Charles III is returning to royal duties after his cancer diagnosis

LONDON — King Charles III is returning to royal duty.

In a statement sent to journalists Friday, Buckingham Palace said the king "will shortly return to public-facing duties after a period of treatment and recuperation following his recent cancer diagnosis."

It did not say Charles has been cured or whether he has finished his treatment. It has never disclosed what type or stage of cancer he was diagnosed with. He began unspecified treatment in early February.

King Charles is being treated for cancer

To help mark what it called a "milestone" of his return, it said King Charles and Queen Camilla will make a visit next Tuesday to a cancer treatment center, where they'll meet with medical specialists and patients. "This visit will be the first in a number of external engagements His Majesty will undertake in the weeks ahead," the statement said.

The palace added that the king and queen will host the emperor and empress of Japan for a state visit to Buckingham Palace in June.

Princess Kate's cancer triggers public shock, sympathy — and shame on the tabloids

King Charles began cancer treatment just weeks before his daughter-in-law, the Princess of Wales, did the same. She began chemotherapy in late February, but her diagnosis wasn't made public until last month, after months of tabloid scrutiny about her whereabouts, and the publication of a family photo the princess says she altered. The palace has not disclosed the type or stage of her cancer either.

Charles' reign began with the September 2022 death of his mother Queen Elizabeth II , who was on the throne longer than any other British monarch. Charles' coronation happened eight months later, in May 2023.

Friday's statement from Buckingham Palace concludes: "As the first anniversary of The Coronation approaches, Their Majesties remain deeply grateful for the many kindnesses and good wishes they have received from around the world throughout the joys and challenges of the past year."

King Charles III is returning to his public duties after taking a step back from treatment  for an undisclosed form of cancer .

The British monarch will visit a cancer treatment center with his wife, Queen Camilla , on Tuesday, Buckingham Palace announced in a news release. There, the couple "will meet medical specialists and patients."

"As the first anniversary of The Coronation approaches, Their Majesties remain deeply grateful for the many kindnesses and good wishes they have received from around the world throughout the joys and challenges of the past year," the palace said.

Charles will continue treatment for an undetermined amount of time, but according to the palace, "doctors are sufficiently pleased with the progress made so far that The King is now able to resume a number of public-facing duties."

Despite not having a clear timeline on when Charles can conclude treatment, the palace said his medical team is "very encouraged by the progress made so far and remain positive" about his recovery.

Will Charles return to a full schedule?

Charles' treatment center will "be the first in a number of external engagements" coming up, although his schedule won't immediately return to what it was before his diagnosis.

Outings "will remain subject to doctors' advice," but "it will not be a fullsummer program," the palace said.

Whether the pace of his duties increases is a decision for his medical team, and certain events will be "adapted where necessary to minimize any risks" to the king, the palace said.

Charles' first major event includes a state visit from Japan

Among one of the bigger anticipated events during Charles' recovery is a state visit from Japan's Emperor Naruhito and Empress Masako in June.

The Japanese royalty will be hosted at Buckingham Palace nearly four years after their planned visit in 2020 was postponed because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Buckingham Palace announced Charles' cancer diagnosis in February

Buckingham Palace confirmed on Feb. 5 that Charles was diagnosed with "a form of cancer." Before the announcement he was hospitalized and underwent a procedure for  benign prostate enlargement in January, and the cancer was identified via diagnostic tests after a "separate issue of concern was noted."

"His Majesty has today commenced a schedule of regular treatments, during which time he has been advised by doctors to postpone public-facing duties," the palace said. "Throughout this period, His Majesty will continue to undertake State business and official paperwork as usual."

His daughter-in-law Princess Kate has also been diagnosed with cancer and has been taking a break from public duties.

In a  video released by Kensington Palace  last month, Kate, 42, called her diagnosis a "huge shock" for her family, adding that she and  Prince William  have done "everything we can to process and manage this privately for the sake of our young family."

Kate said it has "taken time" to explain her diagnosis to her and William's children and "to reassure them that I'm going to be OK."

The palace first announced in January that Kate had been admitted to the hospital for planned abdominal surgery.

In a statement at the time, the palace said Kate's surgery was successful but that "based on the current medical advice, she is unlikely to return to public duties until after Easter."

Now, some people commenting on Teigen’s jam post clearly don’t think Meghan has put the bullying allegations behind her. Teigen’s post also isn’t the only place that discussion about the allegations have been making a comeback.

Just as Meghan is trying to relaunch herself as a lifestyle influencer, outlets in the U.K., Australia and the U.S. have reported on speculation that the palace staffers who claimed they were bullied might be ready to come forward, the New York Post reported .

The speculation began earlier this month when a former palace aide, Samantha Cohen, confirmed in an interview with the Herald-Sun, an Australian newspaper, that she was one of 10 staffers who were questioned about the allegations, Page Six reported .

Cohen declined to elaborate on the allegations but alluded to the fact that there was a high staff turnover among those who worked for Meghan and Harry. Cohen was a long-time aide for the late Queen Elizabeth II, but went to work for Meghan, at the queen’s request, to help get the American actor ready for royal life.

“I was only supposed to stay for six months but stayed for 18 — we couldn’t find a replacement for me and when we did we took them on tour to Africa with Harry and Meghan to show them the ropes but they left (quit) as well while in Africa,” Cohen said in the interview.

Cohen’s interview prompted royal author Tom Bower to opine that more information about Meghan’s alleged bullying could come to light now that Cohen has spoken out.

“The trickle of information will, soon enough, become a stream,” Bower, the author “Revenge,” a critical book of Meghan and Harry’s departure from royal life, wrote in an editorial for the Daily Mail on Tuesday.

Bower said that Cohen was tasked with persuading Meghan, an independent- and career-minded California-born actor, to “embrace the royal family’s immutable hierarchy and rigid protocols.” He said Cohen probably became exasperated with Meghan because she either disagreed, or failed to understand, “these non-negotiable elements of royalty.” “I believe that members of Samantha Cohen’s team viewed this as an irresponsible self-indulgence,” Bower wrote.

According to the 2022 book “Courtiers,” by Valentine Low, the Times royal reporter who first reported on the bullying allegations, Cohen privately complained that she felt she’d been “treated harshly” by the couple and likened the job to “working with teenagers.”

In Low’s original story for the Times , he reported that Meghan drove two personal assistants out of the household and undermined the confidence of a third. She is alleged to have said, “It’s not my job to coddle people” after aides were left in tears and humiliated by her “difficult demands.”

The Times also found that Meghan’s problems with her royal staff could not simply be attributed to a clash of cultures and an American’s “straight-talking” ways. One former staff member said the duchess could be sharp with anyone she felt let her down, saying, “I had unpleasant experiences with her. I would definitely say humiliated.”

While Buckingham Palace issued a statement in 2021, saying it was “very concerned” about the bullying claims, the palace subsequently said in 2022 that it would not make public the results of its investigations into the allegations.

Several P.R. experts interviewed this week by The Telegraph said the bullying allegations could be one of the barriers for Meghan successfully restoring her public image, especially in the U.K. She’s also made enemies of royal supporters who don’t like the way she has disparaged the monarchy in interviews.

“There’s a lot to unpack and correct and that takes honesty and guts and patience. If you air your dirty laundry in public, it will take time for it to dry,” Natalie Trice, a U.K-based P.R. consultant who has worked with CEOs of CNN and Discovery Channel and other companies.

“Meghan has a voice and a platform, what does she want to use it to say?” Trice told The Telegraph. “Who is she and what does she really stand for? I don’t think anyone knows yet. And hopefully it’s more than flogging strawberry jam to rich people.”

King Charles to Return to Public Duties as Palace Shares Major Update on His Health amid Cancer Treatment

The King, 75, will visit a cancer treatment center with Queen Camilla as the palace says he is "greatly encouraged to be resuming some public-facing duties"

King Charles is gearing up for a return to public-facing royal duties after revealing his cancer diagnosis in February.

Buckingham Palace shared an encouraging update about the monarch's health on April 26, announcing that King Charles, 75, will visit a cancer treatment center to meet medical specialists and patients with Queen Camilla , 76, on April 30. It's understood that the center has not been directly involved with the King's medical care.

The palace added that the outing will be the first of several engagements planned for the King in the coming weeks, including hosting a state visit at Buckingham Palace for the Emperor and Empress of Japan in late June.

After beginning cancer treatment, King Charles postponed public duties but continued to work behind the scenes and undertake meetings including small audiences at Buckingham Palace . However, a royal source previously told PEOPLE that the monarch's desire to work was "wholly undiminished" with his nephew Peter Phillips revealing in an interview that his uncle was "frustrated" by his limitations .

“He is always pushing, his staff and everybody and his doctors and nurses to be able to say, 'Actually, can I do this? Can I do that?' " Peter said. “So the overriding message would be that he's obviously very keen to get back to a form of normality. And he's probably frustrated that, recovery is taking a little longer than probably he would want it to."

A Buckingham Palace spokesperson said that King Charles' cancer treatment will continue, but "doctors are sufficiently pleased with the progress made so far that The King is now able to resume a number of public-facing duties."

The King will continue all official state business and select audiences in addition to adding public outings to his agenda, but he will not have a full summer schedule, according to the palace. His appearance at Trooping the Colour , the annual celebration and parade marking the British monarch's birthday in London, on June 15 is still unconfirmed, in addition to other highlights on the royal calendar such as Royal Ascot in June and palace garden parties in May.

"Any public-facing engagements will be announced nearer the time in the usual way and will remain subject to doctors’ advice," the palace spokesperson said.

"His Majesty is greatly encouraged to be resuming some public-facing duties and very grateful to his medical team for their continued care and expertise," the spokesperson added.

The latest health announcement was accompanied by a new portrait of King Charles and Queen Camilla, taken to mark the first anniversary of the coronation approaching on May 6. The snap was taken in the gardens of Buckingham Palace on the morning of April 10, the day after the couple's 19th wedding anniversary , by portrait photographer Millie Pilkington.

Pilkington also got behind the camera last year to snap the official birthday pictures of Kate Middleton and Prince William 's three children, Prince George ,  Princess Charlotte  and  Prince Louis . She also snapped the image of the Prince of Wales surrounded by his sons and daughter that was released last year to celebrate Father's Day.

King Charles was most recently seen spending time with Queen Camilla in Scotland. On April 21, what would have been  Queen Elizabeth 's 98th birthday, the couple were photographed in a car after attending church at Crathie Kirk near Balmoral Castle, where the royal family traditionally gathers in the summer months.

The sovereign  made his first major public appearance since his cancer revelation at Easter. After attending a church service at St. George's Chapel at Windsor Castle with Queen Camilla and other members of the royal family, he greeted well-wishers outside by shaking hands and wishing them a happy holiday.

A royal source told PEOPLE last month that King Charles was " progressing well " in his cancer treatment and there is an "amplified confidence" amid the sophisticated treatment receiving.

"He is positive, the doctors are optimistic," the source said.

King Charles will visit a cancer treatment centre next week, in a fitting return to public duties.

Buckingham Palace has announced that both the King and Queen will meet medical specialists and patients during a visit on Tuesday to raise awareness of the importance of early diagnosis.

The visit will mark the first engagement the King and Queen have carried out as a couple since November 14, Charles’s 75th birthday, when they launched the Coronation Food Project.

For the monarch, it will signal a remarkable turning point and the start of what looks to be a busy rest of the year.

When it was announced at the start of February that the King had been diagnosed with cancer, he may not have imagined he would be greeting the masses at a Buckingham Palace summer garden party, never mind boarding a plane for the other side of the world.

But just three months after the diagnosis, the palace has revealed that he is responding so well to treatment that he is able to undertake a programme of summer engagements.

From the Chelsea Flower Show to Royal Ascot, the summer social season incorporates the big set pieces of the royal calendar.

And to his immense delight, the King will find himself at its heart. The relief within his court is almost palpable, although aides insist that engagements will be “adapted where necessary” to minimise any risks to his health.

Despite the King’s own wholly positive outlook, caution has long been the watchword. Variables such as the capacity for downtime and the number of people he might meet will be factored into every appearance.

The annual Buckingham Palace garden parties have long kicked off the season, as thousands of guests gather in their hats and tailcoats to enjoy finger sandwiches and beautifully presented cakes on the expansive palace lawn.

This year’s garden parties will take place on May 8 and May 21. 

The King expects to attend at least one of them, although whether he processes down a long “lane” greeting the great and the good, as per tradition, remains to be seen.

Three weeks later, the King is hoping to join the 80th anniversary commemorations of D-Day.

On June 6, events on both sides of the Channel will mark the anniversary of the Normandy landings, celebrating those who ran the gauntlet of Hitler’s Atlantic Wall and setting the wheels in motion for the liberation of Western Europe.

Then comes Trooping the Colour, the monarch’s official birthday parade, which will have an added celebratory air this year.

To the relief of all concerned, not least the King himself, His Majesty is expected to be the star guest during the colourful spectacle on June 15.

Since March, Buckingham Palace and the Ministry of Defence have been working in lockstep, exploring ways in which he could take part while avoiding any undue risk to his health.

Options included watching the pomp and the pageantry from a podium, rather than on horseback, and being driven from Buckingham Palace in a carriage.

As the King joins other senior members of the Royal family on the Buckingham Palace balcony for the traditional RAF flypast, the crowd’s roar will surely be louder than ever.

Two days later, on June 17, it is Garter Day, when the King hopes to join Royal Knights and Ladies of the Order of the Garter at St George’s Chapel in Windsor for a procession and ceremony.

There will be little time for rest, as the following day marks the start of Royal Ascot, the racing fixture that became synonymous with the late Elizabeth II, who was besotted with horse racing and barely missed a meeting.

Fears that the event’s valuable royal connection would falter after her death have proved unfounded. Determined to take up the mantle, the King attended every day of last year’s meeting to the delight of industry insiders, breeders, managers and racegoers alike.

Similarly, this year aides are planning for a “significant” level of attendance.

At the end of June, the King and Queen will host the Emperor and Empress of Japan for a state visit.

The last such visit, from South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol and First Lady Kim Keon Hee, was in November, including a ceremonial welcome followed by a state banquet.

Holyrood Week, which traditionally falls at the end of June into the beginning of July, is also likely to be marked by the King as he celebrates all things Scottish.

At the beginning of August, the monarch will retire to his beloved Scottish Highlands for his annual summer break, where he will continue royal tradition by gathering the wider family together for their usual countryside walks, grouse shooting, fishing and picnics.

Charles is expected to first decamp to the Castle of Mey, the home that once belonged to his late grandmother, Elizabeth the Queen Mother.

He usually attends the Mey Highland Games in Caithness, which this year falls on August 3, before travelling down to Birkhall, his private home on the Balmoral estate. There, he is expected privately to mark the second anniversary of his accession on September 8.

The King usually opts to remain in Scotland until the beginning of October, interspersing his break with occasional engagements.

If his treatment continues to go to plan, he will no doubt want to rest before the first major overseas tour of his reign.

Buckingham Palace is ploughing on with plans for an autumn state visit to Australia and the King remains “hopeful” that he will be able to make the trip, which is to be organised around the annual Commonwealth Heads of Government meeting (Chogm) in Samoa, beginning on October 21.

Palace aides are looking at the proposed schedule and have begun making tentative plans. However, the schedule is likely to be scaled back, with the potential tour closer to two weeks rather than three in length. A trip to Fiji is said to have been ruled out.

Sources caution that it is still early days and that such trips are reliant on how the King reacts to ongoing treatment in the coming months.

“It is no great mystery that the King is keen to attend Chogm if he is able,” one said recently. “If he is able to go, of course he will go. Plans continue but there are no guarantees, we are still a long way off.”

The highly anticipated visit to Australia, alongside the Queen, would mark the King’s first trip to the country since his accession and the first by a ruling monarch since Elizabeth II in 2011.

Event organisers Down Under are already jostling for position, with invitations extended for the royals to attend Melbourne Cup on November 5, The Everest race day in Sydney on October 19 and Taronga Western Plains Zoo in Dubbo.

A visit is also expected to include attendance at the bicentenary celebrations of the New South Wales parliament’s upper house.

In December, as he drafts his Christmas message to the nation, the King will have plenty to reflect on. But if the upward trajectory continues, it will hopefully be a message of triumph after a testing year.

KING Charles is well enough to return to front-line public-facing duties just eleven weeks after announcing he has cancer, Buckingham Palace has announced.

The King , 75, will be joined by the Queen , 76, as he chooses to make his public comeback by visiting a cancer hospital to speak to staff and patients, together on Tuesday.

Palace officials say the King is still undergoing cancer treatment but his medical team are "very encouraged by the progress" and "remain positive" about his recovery.

It is understood the King, as patron of MacMillan Cancer Support, wants the visit to raise awareness of the importance of early diagnosis and highlight innovative research supported by Cancer Research UK, which is taking place at the hospital.

The palace has also confirmed he will host a State Visit from the Emperor and Empress of Japan this summer.

In a statement, Buckingham Palace said: "His Majesty The King will shortly return to public-facing duties after a period of treatment and recuperation following his recent cancer diagnosis.

"To help mark this milestone, The King and Queen will make a joint visit to a cancer treatment centre next Tuesday, where they will meet with medical specialists and patients.

"This visit will be the first in a number of external engagements His Majesty will undertake in the weeks ahead.

'RARING TO GO'

The King is well enough to take part in outdoor engagements which means Royal Ascot, Trooping the Colour joining and the Royal Family on the palace balcony, are possibly on the cards.

It confirms The Sun's exclusive story three weeks ago when we revealed the King had told aides he was "raring to go" and ordered staff to "supercharge" his diary for the summer.

A palace spokesperson said: "His Majesty’s treatment programme will continue, but doctors are sufficiently pleased with the progress made so far that The King is now able to resume a number of public-facing duties.

"Forthcoming engagements will be adapted where necessary to minimise any risks to His Majesty’s continued recovery."

It comes after His Majesty bravely opened up about his diagnosis in February this year after the disease was spotted during a his prostate operation.

Charles has taken a step back from royal duties while he undergoes outpatient cancer treatment in London.

However, he has still been carrying out official State business and selected Audiences throughout his recovery programme.

In March he hosted a meeting with Korean War Veterans at Buckingham Palace and met with Chancellor of the Exchequer Jeremy Hunt ahead of the budget.

Adoring Charles ‘determined to carry on his duties’ with his ‘strength’ Camilla in sweet new picture

KING Charles appears determined to carry on with his duties with Camilla his “source of strength”, a body language expert has claimed.

The nation was left shocked earlier this year when  Charles revealed he had been diagnosed with cancer.

Today palace officials say the King , 75, is still undergoing cancer treatment but his medical team are "very encouraged by the progress" and "remain positive" about his recovery.

Charles will be joined by Camilla , 76, as he chooses to make his public comeback by visiting a cancer hospital to speak to staff and patients, together on Tuesday.

Charles has now shared a sweet new picture with stoic Camilla right by his side as he continues to bravely fight his cancer.

The photo was taken in the Buckingham Palace Gardens on April 10, the day after the royal couple's wedding anniversary - and also marks one year since the Coronation.

In the snap, the King is seen beaming as he smiles lovingly at Camilla, who clasps his left arm affectionately.

Speaking exclusively to The Sun, body language expert Judi James revealed the two put on a united and reassured front in the latest picture.

amilla has been praised as Charles' "rock" following his diagnosis.

And Judi notes that there could even be a suggestion "their relationship might have deepened" given Charles’s illness.

The body language pro said: "This pose though allows us a glimpse of their authentic relationship without the usual restrictions and filters.

"What we can see here is a naturally relaxed couple with Charles finally allowing himself to show his adoration and his gratitude towards Camilla as well as hinting that he has been relying on her as a source of strength during his illness.

"The spatial gap between them in negligible as Camilla leans her torso in towards her husband."

The body language expert says the "unusual statement pose was all the more poignant" given the monarch's current health battles.

Judi believes that Charles' pose is an indicator of his "calm determination" to carry on with his duties as monarch.

She continued: "With the famous resilience and stoicism of the Windsor men, Charles places one hand in his pocket in a suave-looking pose despite the fact that he appears slimmer and frailer here.

"This casual ‘manly’ pose seems to provide an active signal of calm determination to carry on his duties as King as soon as possible."

Judi claims that the latest snap has allowed us to see a different side of Charles and Camilla and reveals how the pair act naturally together.

She said: "Charles is normally very adept at verbalising his love for his wife but reticent about showing it visually.

"His upbringing has seemed to create an intellectual circuit-breaker for him when it comes to PDAs, making him appear mildly allergic to them.

"Camilla’s own body language with her husband in public has so far been focused on staying peripheral when it comes to the spotlight.

"She tends to look eager to do the right thing during public and formal outings with Charles which can make her look edgy and to take her cues from him."

The palace has only so far confirmed the King's cancer hospital enragement last week and Japan State Visit.

They have also confirmed The Sun's story last month that planning is underway for the King to travel abroad which includes D-Day 80th anniversary commemorations in June and even Australia in October.

FUTURE PLANS

The palace spokesperson added: "Planning continues for ways in which Their Majesties may attend such summer and autumn engagements, though nothing can be confirmed or guaranteed at this stage.

"All future plans remain subject to doctors' advice nearer the time, with appropriate adaptations made where necessary to minimise any risks to His Majesty’s continued recovery."

It is understood the King's programme will be "carefully calibrated" with his medical team as his recovery continues.

The spokesperson said: "His Majesty is greatly encouraged to be resuming some public-facing duties and very grateful to his medical team for their continued care and expertise."

His comeback comes just days before the nation will celebrate the first full year since the King's Coronation last May.

His Majesty and Princess Kate have been confiding in each other amid their shared cancer shocks.

The royal mum-of-three , 42, opened up about her diagnosis in an emotional video last month.

Like her father-in-law, doctors detected the disease after she went in for planned abdominal surgery in January.

In the announcement, which saw a surge in NHS clicks online, Kate revealed she'd had an  "incredibly tough" couple of months .

The King has now personally awarded the Princess of Wales a new title in recognition of her unwavering public service.

She is the first recipient of The Royal Companion of The Order of the Companions of Honour.

Their growing closeness and the honorific title puts her as the most senior member of holders of the regular The Order of the Companion of Honour, such as  Sir Paul McCartney  and  Sir David Attenborough .

PILLARS OF SUPPORT

As Princess Kate and King Charles have taken a step back, Prince William and Queen Camilla have stepped up to shoulder the burden of their royal duties.

Just yesterday, Wills visited a school in Sandwell,  West Midlands to meet a boy, 12, who wrote him a heartfelt letter about the stigma around male mental health.

The royal apologised for Kate's absence and said she would have "loved to be there."

Last week, the prince attended the funeral of Major Mike Sadler - the last of the wartime SAS 'Originals' who died at 103.

And, just days before the dad-of-three promised to "look after" Kate  as he made his first public appearance since her cancer announcement.

Charles’ docs are ‘positive’ about King’s cancer recovery

KING Charles’ doctors are “positive” about his cancer recovery as he heads back to work 11 weeks after his diagnosis.

The monarch is well enough to return to front-line public-facing duties,  Buckingham Palace  has announced.

Palace officials say the  King , 75, is still undergoing cancer treatment but his medical team are “very encouraged by the progress” and “remain positive” about his recovery.

Charles will be joined by  Camilla , 76, as he chooses to make his public comeback by visiting a cancer hospital to speak to staff and patients, together on Tuesday.

The palace has also confirmed he will host a State Visit from the Emperor and Empress of  Japan  this summer.

William gave a helping hand loading food and cooking in the kitchen at food distribution charity Surplus to Supper, in Sunbury-on-Thames,  Surrey .

Meanwhile, Queen Camilla  continues to be the King's "rock" - and is said to be in regular contact with Kate.

The Queen has continued to carry out all of her royal duties and  attended many events by herself  after urging Charles to slow down.

She attended 13 royal engagements in the month after His Majesty's health announcement.

In March, she jetted off for a well-deserved break as one of the last key royals standing amid Kate and Charles' rest.

But, Camilla dutifully returned on March 11 to stand in for the king at the Commonwealth Day service at Westminster Abbey.

King Charles Will Return to Royal Duties With a Visit to a Cancer Center

Nearly three months after announcing a cancer diagnosis , King Charles III is getting ready to return to royal duties. On Friday, Buckingham Palace announced that he would return to public engagements next week, and his first event will be a trip to a medical clinic focused on cancer with Queen Camilla.

“His Majesty The King will shortly return to public-facing duties after a period of treatment and recuperation following his recent cancer diagnosis,” the palace statement read. “To help mark this milestone, The King and Queen will make a joint visit to a cancer treatment center next Tuesday, where they will meet medical specialists and patients. This visit will be the first in a number of external engagements His Majesty will undertake in the weeks ahead.” These engagements will include a state visit by Emperor Naruhito and Empress Masako of Japan, set to take place in June.

The announcement came alongside the release of a new official portrait of the couple on their 19th wedding anniversary on April 10. Taken by Millie Pilkington, it shows the king and queen walking in the gardens at Buckingham Palace. The palace statement also mentioned the upcoming anniversary of King Charles’s 2023 coronation and thanked the public for their support since the big event. “As the first anniversary of The Coronation approaches, Their Majesties remain deeply grateful for the many kindnesses and good wishes they have received from around the world throughout the joys and challenges of the past year,” it read.

The king said that he would be taking a break from public duties when he announced his diagnosis with an unspecified form of cancer on February 5. The cancer was discovered during a workup for a procedure to treat benign prostate cancer at the London Clinic, though Vanity Fair confirmed at the time that the king was not suffering from prostate cancer. Though the king did not conduct any public engagement while he was undergoing outpatient treatment, he did continue to receive his daily red box delivery of government papers and also hosted small meetings at Buckingham Palace.

Earlier this week, V.F. reported that king had planned to resume public duties as soon as next month and that his treatment was going well “At the moment HRH is doing very well and responding very well to treatment,” the source said. “He is very keen to get back to public-facing duties before June if he can. He is doing well but is frustrated more than anything else that he has had to take time off. He is being a good patient but not always a patient one.”

A timeline of King Charles' health struggles, from his cancer diagnosis to his return to public duties

King Charles III's return to public duties is imminent, Buckingham Palace said in a statement shared with Business Insider on Friday.

The announcement comes months after the palace said the British monarch was diagnosed with cancer following a procedure to treat an enlarged prostate.

At the time, the palace said the king would be stepping back from public-facing duties to undergo a "schedule of regular treatments." With Charles out of the spotlight — and his daughter-in-law Kate Middleton also undergoing cancer treatment — other members of the royal inner circle, like Prince William, have faced pressure to step up .

But the palace's latest announcement signifies the king is ready to return to business as usual.

Here's a timeline of Charles' health struggles, from his diagnosis to his return to the public.

Buckingham Palace announced Charles was undergoing a "corrective procedure" on his prostate in January.

On January 17, the palace shared in a statement with Business Insider that Charles would be heading to the hospital to receive treatment for an enlarged prostate.

At the time, the palace described Charles' condition as "benign" and said the procedure he was having was "common with thousands of men each year."

When asked to provide further details about the condition and the procedure, the palace said it would not "for privacy reasons" and that more information about his upcoming engagements would be confirmed "in due course."

The announcement came the same day Kensington Palace announced Kate was in recovery after a "planned abdominal surgery."

Weeks later, Buckingham Palace confirmed Charles had been diagnosed with cancer.

On February 5, less than a month after the king's prostate procedure, the palace made yet another unprecedented announcement: Charles has cancer .

The palace didn't specify the form of cancer Charles was diagnosed with in the statement shared with BI. However, it said the monarch's medical team discovered the cancer while he was undergoing his prostate procedure.

It added that Charles had already begun a "schedule of regular treatments" and was under advice to step back from "public-facing duties," though he would also be continuing "State business and official paperwork as usual."

The statement concluded with the palace saying Charles was "grateful" for his medical team's "swift intervention" and was looking forward to returning to "full public duty as soon as possible."

"His Majesty has chosen to share his diagnosis to prevent speculation and in the hope it may assist public understanding for all those around the world who are affected by cancer," it added.

Charles kept working behind the scenes, praised the public for its well-wishes, and received support from his royal relatives — near and far.

In the months after Charles' diagnosis, the royal kept busy behind the scenes. Shortly after his condition was made public, a representative of Prince Harry told BI that he was scheduled to fly to the UK from California to see his father.

Weeks later, he was pictured meeting with British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak and opening get-well-soon cards sent to the palace by members of the public.

In the interim, Charles also received treatment at the same clinic as Kate , whom he remained in the "closest contact with," a palace spokesperson told the BBC .

On March 28, Charles made his first public remarks post-diagnosis. Before Easter Sunday, in a pre-recorded audio clip shared at the Royal Maundy Service, he said it was "a great sadness" that he was unable to attend in person due to his condition and stressed the importance of extending "friendship" in times of need, Royal Central reported .

On Easter Sunday , Charles was spotted alongside Camilla attending a service at St George's Chapel in Windsor. The service was smaller to reduce Charles' contact with others while undergoing treatment.

On Friday, the palace said Charles would return to public-facing duties and is gearing up to host Japanese royals in June.

After a "period of treatment and recuperation" following his cancer diagnosis, the palace said on Friday that Charles is gearing up to return to public-facing duties "shortly."

The statement added that one of the first of several public events he's set to appear at in the next few weeks is a visit to a cancer treatment center with Queen Camilla on April 30.

"In addition, The King and Queen will host Their Majesties The Emperor and Empress of Japan for a State Visit in June," the statement read.

As Charles approaches the one-year mark following his coronation on May 6, 2023, the statement concluded by saying he and Camilla are "deeply grateful for the many kindnesses and good wishes they have received from around the world throughout the joys and challenges of the past year."

For the first time, the public will be able to go on guided tours of Buckingham Palace's East Wing. That includes the famous front facade with a balcony that's been the focus of so many big royal occasions, although visitors won't be able to step out onto the balcony and wave to the tourists below.
