On your Alexandria day trip from Cairo, your will meet your guide at 7:00 am to start your full-day tour to Alexandria the second-largest city and the main port of Egypt with a population of 3.5 to 5 million. The city was built on a small village by the orders of Alexander the great whom the city immortalize his name. the city flourished to be a main cultural, political, and economic metropolis in the Mediterranean sea. Alexandria extends about 20 miles along the coast of the Mediterranean sea in north-central Egypt. Today the city became an important industrial center due to the natural gas and oil pipes that extend from Suez as well as the city is a center for many industrial factories. Alexandria is the main summer resort for most Egyptians due to its pleasant weather in the summer.

The catacomb of Kom El Shoukfa:

the largest Roman burial place in all of Egypt. It consists of a multi-level labyrinth, reached via a large spiral staircase, and featuring dozens of chambers adorned with sculpted pillars, statues, and other syncretic Romano-Egyptian religious symbols, burial niches, and sarcophagi, as well as a large Roman-style banquet room, where memorial meals were conducted by relatives of the deceased. The catacombs were long forgotten by the citizens until they were discovered by accident in the 1800s. North East of the catacomb stands the Pompay Pillar was originally a part of a temple colonnade.

Pompey’s Pillar: is a massive 25m (82ft) pink granite monument measuring 9m (30ft) around its girth. The pillar should rightfully called Diocletian’s Pillar, as it was built for the emperor in AD 297, and was the only monument left standing following the violent arrival of the Crusaders around 1000 years later.

The Roman Amphitheatre: also known as the Roman theatre located near the Greco Roman museum. It consists of semicircle marble terraces. The theatre was discovered when digging for a new apartment building and it is very well preserved. The Citadel of Qaitbay: Is a defensive fort overlooking the Mediterranean Sea. It is said to be built upon the ruins of the ancient lighthouse of Alexandria which was considered one of the wonders of the ancient world.

The new Biblotequa Alexandria: was inaugurated in 2003 to replace the old Royal Alexandria library that was considered the largest in the world but was destroyed in a fire.

Abu Abbas al-Mursi Mosque: In the center of Alexandria lies Abu El Abbas Mosque. The mosque is a shrine for a wholly suffi and beside it some other shrines for other wholly Muslims. The main dome of the mosque is well decorated and its main highlight. The exterior of the mosque has a panorama appearance. It is a place of Muslim worship, therefore you should show respect to the place, getting off your shoes and men should not wear shorts while women should be veiled and wearing long clothes.

Quait Bay Fortress

The fort of Qaït Bay is an impressive fortress of the medieval period built-in 1477 by one of the last Mamluk rulers of Egypt, Ashraf Aboul Nasr Quait Bay.

Built on the foundations of the legendary lighthouse of Alexandria on the ancient island of Pharos, considers one of the 7 wonders of the ancient world. The site is located in the Anfouchi district, on the tip of a tongue of land that marks the entrance to the East Port in front of the city of Alexandria.

The QaïtBay Fort is now home to the Egyptian Navy Museum, where the history of the port of Alexandria can be traced since the city’s inception. The museum can be visited from 9 am to 16pm every day of the week. The Qaït Bay Fort is currently the only mamluk-era monument accessible to visitors in Alexandria.

Lunch will be served during the tour in a local restaurant. At the end of the day return to Cairo.

From Cairo to Alexandria: 4 Best Ways To Get There

Written by Jess Lee Updated Jul 13, 2022 We may earn a commission from affiliate links ( )

This legendary Mediterranean city sits 220 kilometers northwest from Cairo. One of Egypt's most romanticized destinations, Alexandria was home to Egypt's last pharaoh, Queen Cleopatra, and was one of the ancient world's great centers of learning.

After Napoleon's invasion of Egypt in 1798, Alexandria blossomed into one of the Mediterranean's most cosmopolitan and multicultural cities, and in the early 20th century was feted in literary works by writers including Laurence Durrell and the poet Cavafy.

Today, its mix of museums, ancient ruins, the beautiful Bibliotheca Alexandrina (a contemporary reimagining of the ancient Library of Alexandria), and decrepit seafront architecture – where you can still catch a wisp of Belle Epoque atmosphere – make it a great destination for a short trip from the capital.

There are plentiful ways to get from Cairo to Alexandria, from do-it-yourself public transport to guided tours.

On This Page:

  • From Cairo to Alexandria by Train
  • From Cairo to Alexandria by Private Tour
  • From Cairo to Alexandria by Bus
  • From Cairo to Alexandria by Minibus

1. From Cairo to Alexandria by Train

Alexandria's seafront

The train is by far the best option for traveling to Alexandria using public transport.

Between Cairo and Alexandria, there are several trains daily, between 6am and 10.30pm, with two different classes of service to choose from.

The "Special" services have newer rolling stock and are faster, as there are less stops along the route. These trains take approximately 2.5 hours from Ramses Train Station in central Cairo to Misr Train Station in central Alexandria.

The slower "Spanish" trains usually take 3.5 hours for the same journey due to stops along the line.

Both train services offer a choice of First and Second Class seating. First Class is preferable as the seats are more comfortable, there is plenty more space, the air-conditioning always works and the onboard bathrooms are kept in good shape.

First-class ticket prices range from 73 EGP (US$4.65) on the "Spanish" services up to 130 EGP (US$8.30) on some of the "Special" service trains.

One of the issues of train travel on this route is the chaotic ticket buying process at Ramses Station in Cairo and (to a much lesser extent) at Alexandria's Misr Station.

It's best to buy your ticket a day before travel to avoid stress on departure or buy online on the official Egyptian National Railways website .

From Alexandria's Misr Station, it is a short stroll to the Kom Al Dikka archaeological site, and an easy walk through the city's core to both the seafront and the Alexandria National Museum.

Train travelers should note that Alexandria has two main train stations. All trains from Cairo stop first at Sidi Gaber Train Station in the east of the city and then continue on to Misr Train Station in the central city.

2. From Cairo to Alexandria by Private Tour

Pompey's Pillar & Serapeum archaeological site

The easiest transport option if you want to head to Alexandria as a day tour from Cairo is by booking a private tour. All tour companies, and many of the hotels, in Cairo can arrange this for you.

Most people opt to have both a guide and driver for the day, but if you're happy to visit Alexandria's historic sites independently, you can opt to have just a driver, which will lower the cost of the tour.

A private tour is the no-stress way to visit Alexandria, with transport (either air-conditioned minibus or car) picking you up from your Cairo hotel, taking you directly to Alexandria's major sights , and dropping you back at your Cairo hotel when finished.

Many tours can be customized depending on your interests. The main stops you should think of, including if you're customizing your own tour, are the Bibliotheca Alexandrina, with its Antiquities Museum and Manuscript Museum in the east of the city, the Catacombs of Kom Ash Shuqqafa and Pompey's Pillar and the Temple of Serapeum in the western suburb of Carmous, Fort Qaitbey at the tip of Alexandria's eastern bay (where the Pharos lighthouse, one of the ancient world's seven wonders, once stood), and the archaeological site of Kom Al Dikka in the central city.

Time for lunch at one of Alexandria's famed fish restaurants is normally factored into day tours from Cairo, though typically not included in the tour price.

If you're simply looking for a private one-way transfer, the Private Transfer from Cairo to Alexandria provides a reputable service that will pick you up from any address in Cairo, including Cairo Airport, in a vehicle that suits your group's needs, from a car to a minibus, and transfers you to any hotel address in Alexandria. All vehicles are comfortable and air-conditioned, and the drivers all speak English.

For a guided full-day private tour to Alexandria from Cairo the Over Day to Alexandria from Cairo offers a full day immersed in Alexandria's historic sights, guided by a professional art historian who specializes in the city's history. The tour includes pickup and drop-off from any hotel in Cairo and visits to Kom Al Dikka, the Catacombs of Kom Ash Shuqqata, Pompey's Pillar, and the Temple of Serapeum and Fort Qaitbey. Lunch and site entrance tickets aren't included in the tour cost.

Another good private tour is the Tour to Alexandria from Cairo by Car , which unlike many other tours includes all site entrance tickets and a seafood lunch in the tour costs, making this a very good option for travelers who want a no-fuss, no-stress day out. The tour picks up and drops off at any Cairo hotel and visits Pompey's Pillar and the Temple of Serapeum, the Catacombs of Kom Ash Shuqqata, Fort Qaitbey, and the Bibliotheca Alexandrina in Alexandria, accompanied by a professional Egyptologist guide.

3. From Cairo to Alexandria by Bus

The Citadel of Qaitbay, Alexandria

A variety of bus companies offer services between Cairo and Alexandria. With services at least hourly between 5am and 11pm, this option is convenient for time choice but comes with the caveat that the bus stations in Alexandria aren't centrally located.

From Cairo, companies including SuperJet, and West & Mid Delta run buses from Cairo Gateway Bus Station in central Cairo.

In Alexandria, these services arrive and depart from Al Moaf Al Gedid Bus Station in the suburb of Moharam Bey, which is around sevven kilometers inland from the seafront city center.

The other main bus company running between Cairo and Alexandria is Go Bus. Their buses depart and arrive Cairo from their very central office just off Tahrir Square (opposite the Egyptian Museum) and arrive and depart from Alexandria at either their office in Moharam Bey (close to the main bus station) or their office in the suburb of Sidi Gaber, roughly six kilometers east of the Bibliotheca Alexandrina.

Bus ticket prices range from 95 EGP (US$6) to 145 EGP (US$9.25), and travel time is roughly 3.5 hours.

4. From Cairo to Alexandria by Minibus

Alexandria's Bibliotheca Alexandrina

One of the quickest methods of public transport between Cairo and Alexandria are the minibuses (known as microbuses in Egypt), which zip between the cities throughout the day and night.

Unfortunately, due to the reckless driving of many microbus drivers - hence why they're so fast - and the cramped conditions of passengers, this isn't a particularly recommended form of transport for short-term visitors.

Microbuses (usually taking 16 passengers) to Alexandria leave from a stand opposite the entrance to Ramses Train Station in central Cairo.

They depart when full. Due to the route's popularity, you rarely wait longer than 20 minutes for the microbus to fill up. Drive time is typically around 2.5 hours but depends on how heavy the traffic is when entering and exiting the cities.

In Alexandria, microbuses arrive and depart from just outside Misr Train Station in the central city, from where you can easily walk to the city's sights and the seafront. Ticket prices are around 50EGP (US$3.50) and are paid directly to the driver.

If you're using the microbuses, don't expect normal safety precautions such as available seatbelts or the driver continuously using the vehicle's headlights when traveling during the evening.

The form of the pyramid can be explained as a development of the large mastabas (mud-brick tombs) of the First and Second Dynasties; the six steps, each smaller than the one below, having been produced by the addition to the original mastaba of successive new layers of masonry, accompanied by the enlargement of the lower stages.

The Step Pyramid stands 60 meters high and is built of locally quarried clay sandstone of poor quality. You can no longer enter the pyramid due to safety issues. The chambers and passages in the interior of the pyramid served partly for the burial of close relatives of the King (in particular those of his sons who died in childhood) and partly for storing grave goods for the use of the dead

Located on the Giza Plateau on the west bank of the Nile in Giza, Egypt, the Sphinx is also the guardian of the plateau. It is the oldest known colossal carving. Its length is about 73.5 meters, including 15 meters long for its front feet, its width is 19.3 meters, and its highest height from the ground is about 20 meters to the top of the head. It is believed that the ancient Egyptians built it during the reign of King Khafre (2558 BC-2532 BC), the builder of the second pyramid in Giza.

This sacred site was venerated from the Pharaonic era up to the Greek, Roman, and Byzantine periods with each ruler adding their own stamp onto the stones here. Saved from a watery grave by UNESCO’s rescue project, which transferred the monuments block by block from Philae Island to Agilika Island, today, the temples continue to work their charm on all who visit

Duration: 3 hours

Stop At:  Aswan High Dam, Manteqet As Sad Al Aali, Aswan Egypt The Aswan High Dam or the High Dam is a water dam on the Nile River in southern Egypt. It was established during the reign of Gamal Abdel Nasser and the Soviets helped build it. The dam helped a lot in controlling the flow of water and mitigating the effects of the Nile flood. Used to generate electricity in Egypt. The length of the dam is 3600 meters, the width of the base is 980 meters, the width of the summit is 40 meters, and the height is 111 meters. The volume of the body of the dam is 43 million cubic meters of cement, iron and other materials, and it can pass through the dam at a flow of water up to 11,000 cubic meters of water per second. Construction of the dam began in 1960 and the total cost was estimated at one billion dollars, one-third written off by the Soviet Union. 400 Soviet experts worked on building the dam and completed its construction in 1968. It is one of the “monuments of Nubia” listed on the UNESCO World Heritage List. And that starts from the direction of the flow of the river from Abu Simbel to Philae (near Aswan).

The twin temples were originally carved from the mountains during the reign of King Ramses II in the thirteenth century BC, as a permanent monument to him and Queen Nefertari, to commemorate his victory in the Battle of Kadesh. However, in 1960 the facility complex was completely moved to another location, on an artificial hill made of a dome structure, and over the Aswan High Dam reservoir.

It was necessary to relocate the temples to avoid them being submerged during the construction of Lake Nasser

Stop At:  Temple of Kom Ombo, Nagoa Ash Shatb, Kom Ombo 81611 Egypt The Kom Ombo Temple is located in Kom Ombo in the Aswan Governorate, southern Egypt. The temple was established during the reign of Ptolemy VI to worship the gods Sobek and Horus. The temple area has recently been restored and renewed. This temple was established during the reign of Ptolemy VI Philomator, but its decoration was only completed in the Roman era during the time of Emperor Tiberius, and we see in this temple also the same features that we find in other Ptolemaic Egyptian temples in terms of design, architecture and decoration. However, this temple has a special feature that resulted in local worship in the place, where people worshiped two local deities, namely Sobek and Horus with the head of a falcon, and despite the difference between these two deities in origin and character, they lived side by side for long centuries without mixing or pairing us Together

The two identical statues depicted Amenhotep III (who lived in the fourteenth century B.C.) sitting, his hands spread out on his knees and looking towards the east (actually towards the South East according to recent trends) towards the river. We booked our eight night tour through One Nation Travel. We spoke to Bilal several times and discussed what we expected on our Egypt vacation. Bilal set it all up, and did a wonderful job. We were always met by a guide or a driver and all transfers were perfect.

Kristina L. – August 26, 2022

Angie Pavel – October 27, 2022

My cousin and I just came back from a 8 day Egypt tour, booked through One Nation Travel Agency. The tour was very well organized, with sub-contracted guides on different sites. Most of the guides were knowledgeable and friendly, but Miquel, our guide in Alexandria, exceeded our expectation, who’s knowledge is unlimited and enchaning. I also have to mention Mostafa, our guide in Edfu, who helped us to navigate through the many and very insistent vendors surrounding the archeological sites. Also, the small car format with a guide and the driver for the day, made our tour very efficient and flexible. I have to thank Mr. Mohamed, the tour manager for this. Besides being very friendly and funny, he did his best in assisting us throughout our tour and made things go smoothly and making us feel safe. All the beautiful temples and historic sites, our adventouros camel ride by the Pyramids and Sphinx, the gorgeous views while gliding on the Nile with the cruise ship, the serenity of the baloon ride, made the long flight hours, scarcity of sleep, the some hygiene inconveniences well worth it. Egyptian people are very proud of their heritage, so be ready to be tested of their teachings, just because they want you to bring home some of this knowledge. One Nation Travel made all this experience possible, and we’ll definitely use them again for our future endeavors.

One Day Trip to Alexandria from Cairo: Things to Do on a Self-Guided Trip

Posted on Last updated: March 16, 2023

Thinking of taking a one day trip to Alexandria from Cairo , Egypt? Good idea. When deciding whether or not to go to Alexandria, we got mixed reviews at first. Some said not to go, and some said it was worth more than a weekend. So we decided to meet in the middle and spend one day in Alexandria Egypt – a very full one, at that.

We were lucky enough to have a local show us around the city on a jam-packed big day exploring everything Alexandria has to offer, from museums to historical sites to seafood (Thanks, Mina!). So the things to do below are from a local’s (and our) perspective! Check out my video below for a quick video travel guide.

Getting to Alexandria from Cairo

You can take a day trip to Alexandria from Cairo by bus, car, minivan, or train. The busses are sometimes faster, but we really enjoy the train experience (and the seats are bigger/comfier, too)! View your options and book online here – it’s easier booking online than in person in many cases!

Assuming you’re also visiting Cairo, check out my Cairo travel guide below:

One day trip to alexandria from Cairo Egypt: things to do in alexandria in one day

Taking the Bus to Alexandria from Cairo

You can grab a bus from the Cairo Gateway bus station (West & Mid Delta or Superjet lines) in downtown Cairo, not too far from the train station, or the GoBus station near the Egyptian museum. The buses are pretty comfortable and should take about 3.5 hours depending on traffic at the time.

The bus station is a bit farther from town so you will need to negotiate a taxi or call an uber to get to the bus station.

If you plan on staying later in Alexandria, you might want to plan a bus ride back to Cairo afterward as the busses depart much later into the night than the trains.

Taking the Train to Alexandria from Cairo

I would recommend taking the train from Cairo to Alexandria simply for the experience. The trains in Egypt are surprisingly comfortable and even serve food. You can take a train from the Ramses train station, which will arrive to Alexandria’s Misr train station quite close to downtown.

Trains say they will take 2 hours, but the reality is that they’ll take at least 3.5 or 4 due to random stops and slowness that no one can explain. I mean, this is Egypt after all! The last trains go back to Cairo around 8:30 or 9pm.

Tour from Cairo to Alexandria

an organized tour. But if you read this post and think you can’t be bothered, you can also book a day tour with a guide from $70 per person. You won’y see ALL of these things (in fact just a couple) but it will be hassle-free.

What to Bring on Your One Day Trip to Alexandria from Cairo

cairo alexandria tour

If you are arriving in the early morning and leaving late at night, you will at least need to bring a backpack with basic items for a day out – sunglasses, sunscreen, a hat, comfortable walking shoes (important), a camera, and comfy clothes.

Depending on the time of year, you will want to have a swimsuit in case you want to take a dip in the sea (and a change of clothes if so), and possibly some warmer layers for after dark (Alexandria gets COLD in the winter).

You will need to have cash for entrance fees to historical sites, and something to cover your skin if you wish to enter any churches or mosques.

Things to Do in Alexandria in 1 Day: Attractions + Activites

Below are the best things to do on a jam-packed one-day trip to Alexandria from Cairo. It may seem like a lot, but you can do it! With a good pace and an adventurous spirit, you can accomplish most of the main sights in Alexandria today… but you WILL be tired (and will need to take a taxi sometimes)!

Royal Jewelry Museum

cairo alexandria tour

At first glance, the Royal Jewelry Museum might sound quite boring (at least it did for me anyway). But it is honestly worth a visit if you can conveniently visit the area (it’s a bit down the coast from downtown).

This museum is an old estate of the Egyptian Royal family, started in the early 1800s by Mohammad Ali Pasha. It’s full of absolutely incredible the jewels and gems that this family possessed – from diamond jewelry to precious jewel-encrusted items from chess sets to toiletry boxes.

It’s incredible to see the glimmer of the diamonds as you walk through the rooms of this Victorian estate, which also has incredible furnishings and touches as well.

Walk the Corniche

alexandria corniche walk

The ‘corniche’ anywhere in Egypt is the boardwalk along the water, and Alexandria has one of the longest corniches in the country. This walkable beachside path stretches from the Citadel ALL the way along Alexandria’s waterfront – over 15 kilometers!

It’s lovely to stroll along the Alexandria Corniche at any time of day. But if you are only there for a day trip, try taking the scenic walk along the corniche while walking in between Alexandria attractions.

Citadel of Quaitbay (on the Alexandria Lighthouse Site)

cairo alexandria tour

The Citadel of Quaitbay is one the most important military strongholds of the Mediterranean sea, built in the late 1400s and renovated in the 1800s. You can enter the citadel and climb up to see to a lot of the vantage points and cannons.

But the coolest part about the Citadel of Quaitbay is that it was built on the site of the ancient Alexandria Lighthouse – which is one of the seven wonders of the ancient world. They say that traces of the lighthouse are still able to be found deep underwater by scuba divers.

Serapeum and Pompey’s Pillar

cairo alexandria tour

Located a bit more inland from the coast, the Serapeum and Pompey’s Pillar are remains of an Ancient Greek acropolis and catacombs that used to occupy the area. The pillar is said to have supported a statue of the Roman Emperor Diocletian (290’s AD), but the original structure and catacombs are from a few hundred years earlier during the rule of the Greeks.

The catacombs are said to have contained a special storage of scrolls and information from the Library of Alexandria. You will see the spaces in the walls where they were placed!

Catacombs of Kom el Shoqafa

catacombs alexandria mixture of roman greek and egyptian design

The catacombs of Kom el Shoqafa are one of the most fascinating sites in Egypt because of the incredible mixture between Egyptian, Greek, and Roman figures and styles.

These catacombs held dozens of tombs, and the main tombs are adorned with carvings and hieroglyphs on the walls that have a uniquely blended style you can’t find anywhere else in Egypt.

Let me explain. You can see figures with the head of Egyptian gods (such as Anubis), Roman clothing/skirt, and the body of a snake… covered by Greek-style columns. You must walk down a huge spiral staircase to enter these tombs, and you can see the slots of the walls where dozens of people were buried. Creeeepy, but cool!

Alexandria Library “Bibliotheca Alexandrina”

alexandria library

It’s common knowledge that the ancient library of Alexandria is long gone – and with it, a lot of ancient knowledge was lost. But, it’s still cool to visit the site of this ancient wonder, and the incredible new library that now occupies the space.

The New ‘Bibliotheca Alexandrina’ is an architectural marvel, with picturesque open spaces and modern design. There’s also a planetarium on the site too! Check the Bibliotheca Alexandrina website for a current schedule – there’s always a lot going on.

Kom el Dikka Ancient Roman Theatre

Kom el Dikka Ancient Roman Theatre

You can actually find an amazingly well-preserved Ancient Roman theatre right next to the train station in Alexandria. It’s a very small one, but it’s worth checking out. As you only have one day in Alexandria, you might want to see it from the street if you are trying to save some money on entrance fees and time.

Cathedral of St Mark

cathedral of st Mark alexandria egypt

Tucked inside downtown Alexandria, you can find the Cathedral of St Mark. This is the oldest Christian church in Alexandria and one of the oldest in the country (but not quite as old as the Hanging Church in Cairo).

As Alexandria was an important historic center for Christianity, this is a very important church and the seat of the pope of Alexandria. You can enter this church and walk around the beautiful old pews, and if you’re lucky you may be shown into the back where they say they have a piece of the palm of St Mark himself… which is equal parts fascinating and creepy.

Sidi Morsi Abo Al Abass Mosque

Sidi Morsi Abo Al Abass Mosque alexandria

Don’t worry about trying to pronounce this one; it’s the main mosque near downtown Alexandria that you truly can’t miss. It’s a beautiful and ornate mosque with multiple domes and buildings that are as intricate on the inside as they are out.

Currently they only open the main mosque for men, but soon they might open it for females again (apparently they closed it for females due to c*vid, whatever that means).

Things to Do on a One Day Trip to Alexandria from Cairo: Food + Fun

Here are some more open-ended things to do in Alexandria on your day trip. Squeeze them in when you have time!

Explore Downtown

downtown alexandria egypt

Downtown Alexandria is full of surprises. You can find tucked-away cafes, restaurants everywhere, and also tons of shops from electronics to souvenirs to clothing.

It’s fun to get lost in the hustle and bustle of the downtown area, wander into a few shops, and really feel the Alexandria city vibe (which you can compare to the beach later)!

Explore the Souk District

cairo alexandria tour

The Souk District is visible on Google Maps and is home to streets and alleys of different kinds of shops. The souk district is organized into sections based on different items.

The ‘womens’ alley’ is a street selling material, lingerie, and dresses that used to be limited to women. You can find an electronics area, a kids’ market, a jewelry section, some more standard souvenirs, and more.

Try some Street Food After

In the souk district, you will find lots of vendors selling different kinds of street food. On your way around, don’t pass up grabbing some interesting snacks like freshly baked sweet potatoes, corn, and even PALM TREE to snack on. Yes, we tried sliced palm tree, and it tasted like healthy chips!

Watch the Sunset

alexandria sunset - one day trip from cairo

Watching the sunset is a MUST in Alexandria, and the best places to watch it are from the corniche near the Alexandria Library, or near the Citadel of Quaitbay. There’s nothing better than a sunset over the sea, and Alexandria serves up lovely Mediterranean sea sunsets on a daily basis.

TRY SEAFOOD!

try seafood in alexandria samakmak restaurant

Alexandria unsurprisingly has some of the BEST seafood. The seafood here comes straight from the sea to the restaurants, where you can select your fish, squids, prawns, mussels, etc right as they arrive.

We went to a restaurant called Samakmak which was honestly our favorite meal in Egypt and maybe one of the best seafood meals I have EVER had. We picked out our fish right from an ice bed outside the restaurant and got 4 different dishes, each more delicious than the last. My tastebuds were doing dances all evening long. We got butter prawns, a fajita calamari, garlic fish, and more.

Visit the Beach

cairo alexandria tour

Alexandria is a popular beach destination for Egyptians throughout the summer, and still has good beach weather through about November. One of the BEST things to do in Alexandria is to relax on the beach!

The beaches on the north side are better for swimming, but if you just want to hang out along the water, there are some beaches right month corniche near the main mosque where you can catch a sea breeze and a great view.

Gleem bay things to do in Alexandria

Gleem Bay is a cool thing to do to wrap in your one day trip to Alexandria from Cairo. It’s essentially a long and skinny mall built onto a jetty in the ocean. It’s lit up in bright lights and is home to tons of restaurants, dessert bars, ice cream, bars, and places to sit and relax and enjoy an evening with the food of your choice.

It’s the busiest after dark, so it could be a great place to wrap up your day in Alexandria before heading back to the train or bus.

THat’s about it for things to do in Alexandria on a one day trip from Cairo! Let me know what you thought and if you made it to everything.

  • yuansongo 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Best experience in Egypt, highly recommended! This is my first time traveling abroad without a group tour, and I am really lucky to have such a good driver. He provided with very good service throughout the whole journey and were very friendly and caring (we thought that Egyptians would be somewhat unfriendly before, but this driver was really very friendly). The most amazing thing is that at the end of the trip, he also Invited us to his home for dinner and had a very delicious koshary(really best in egypt, even restaurant also no good as his wife cooked) He also invited all his family members to let us get to know (that is also amazing,we really enter the local egyptian house, and know about their whole family). After seeing his very good family atmosphere, we also understood why this driver was so friendly. It's really a very, very good experience. If it is your first time to travel independently and you are worried that it will be dangerous, asking him to take you on a trip will make you feel at ease! In addition, his brother is also a tour guide. He is very professional in Egyptian history and speaks excellent English. We also met his brother when visiting his home. If we need tour guide services, we can also find him together. I saw their company haven any review before, but don worry guys! as i said:Really highly recommended! Read more Written March 15, 2024
