We used these quite a bit when we were in a motorhome towing a vehicle. The radio we had came with NOAA weather channels built-in which was very useful during the tornado warning .

10. Pet Safety Temperature Monitor

The Waggle Pet Monitor is an indispensable gadget for RVers who travel with pets. It’s designed to provide peace of mind by ensuring the safety and comfort of your animals when you’re out exploring. Operating on a cellular network, the Waggle Pet Monitor keeps an eye on the temperature inside your RV. It allows you to set specific temperature parameters that suit your pet’s needs. Should the interior of your RV become too hot or too cold, the monitor promptly sends alerts directly to your smartphone.

An RV vent cover is a game-changer for RV enthusiasts and one of those RV accessories that you don’t realize you need until you have it. Having a vent cover installed on your RV allows you to leave your roof vents open, regardless of the weather conditions. This means you can keep your fans running during hot weather or while cooking, without the concern of rainwater seeping into your RV.

Additionally, a vent cover offers added protection against the sun’s harsh rays and prevents debris from clogging your vent screens. This not only extends the lifespan of your RV’s ventilation system but also enhances the overall comfort inside your RV.

We installed the Ultra Breeze Vent Cover in our Class A motorhome and then the Maxxair Max II Vent Cover in our Class B campervan.

12. Leveling and Jack Pads

We went through three sets of Lynx plastic leveling blocks in a very short time as newbies. That was before we figured out a trick: use heavy duty rubber jack pads . The plastic leveling blocks sit on top of the pads and are protected from gravel or anything else that can damage them. We also used the pads under our jacks when we were parked on gravel or dirt. This prevents the jacks from sinking into mud if it rains.

I wrote a whole article on the tools we carry in our RV . It’s easy to go overboard with tools – I did this myself when we first started out – but having some basic tools and knowing how to use them will always serve you well.

14. Portable Air Compressor

Many RVers initially think that a standard gas station air compressor will suffice for their needs. However, we quickly learned through our own experiences that this isn’t always the case. RVs, vans and trucks, with their larger, load-bearing tires, often require a higher PSI than typical passenger vehicle tires. This higher PSI requirement means that most air pumps at gas stations are not equipped to adequately fill RV tires. In fact, using a gas station compressor can sometimes result in a loss of PSI, rather than an increase.

15. Camping Stove

Even though we live in a very small space, we consider our Coleman camp stove essential. It’s great to be able to cook outside on a nice day, and it keeps messy or strong-smelling foods like bacon or fish outside our tiny indoor kitchen. They also make an adapter , so we can connect our stove to our large propane tanks without having to carry those little green bottles around.

If you have more storage than we do, a Weber portable grill might be more up your alley. Either way, it’s good to have a way to cook outside.

16. Dicor Lap Sealant

Dicor isn’t technically a gadget but it’s still extremely important to have on hand. Over time, the sealant on your roof will degrade and crack. Cracks in your roof can lead to water leaks when it rains, and water damage is dangerous to an RV.

We’ve had leaks in multiple RVs, and a little lap sealant in the offending areas puts an end to them quickly. While it’s a good idea to have your roof resealed every few years, having some dicor on hand to stop a leak before it does major damage can be worth its weight in gold.

If you currently have black sealant on your roof, make sure you get the black Dicor so the roof of your RV doesn’t start resembling a Zebra! Make sure to also have a basic caulk gun on hand in order to apply the Dicor.

17. Sewer Gate Valve

Dealing with RV sewer lines is a task many RVers are familiar with, especially those who have experienced the less-than-pleasant aspects of it. While traveling in our Class A RV, I quickly learned a common issue: the unwelcome surprise of getting splashed with sewer water when removing the cap from the sewer output of the RV. This often occurred due to the water that had leaked past the built in sewer valves during transit. Additionally, some of this water would end up running into the wet bay, leading to an unwanted and time-consuming cleaning task.

To resolve this issue and make the dumping process cleaner and more efficient, we turned to the Valterra twist-on waste valve . This simple yet effective device has maintained cleanliness during the dumping process. I found it so useful that I also installed it for the gray tank in our pop-up truck camper . High-pressure water, commonly found in city water connections, can cause significant damage by causing leaks within your RV’s water system. This is why it’s essential to use a water pressure regulator every time you connect your water hose to a city water source. Before purchasing a regulator, it’s a good idea to check if your RV already includes a built-in water pressure regulator. If not, a water pressure regulator is a small investment that can save you from costly repairs and ensure a worry-free experience when using city water connections during your travels.

20. Outdoor Camping Mat

An outdoor mat is a valuable addition to any camp set up, transforming from a convenient accessory in good weather to an absolute necessity in rainy conditions. When rain turns your campsite into a muddy mess, an outdoor mat can significantly minimize the amount of mud and moisture that gets tracked into your RV. Investing in a high-quality handheld vacuum is a must to be able to keep up with all of the dirt and hair that can find its way into your RV.

Our personal experience has led us to a handheld vacuum that we’ve grown to love. Its effectiveness and ease of use are so impressive that we find ourselves using it not only in our RV but also in our home. Kait has been perfecting the art of using the Instant Pot multi-cooker for years, and now it’s such a staple of our RV kitchen that it’s hard to imagine how we’d eat without it. The great thing about a multi-cooker is that you can save space by having one cooking gadget with multiple features. It’s a rice cooker, slow cooker and so much more all in one.

The Scrubba is a fantastic RV accessory to have when you need some fresh clothes, but don’t have access to a washing machine (or a pocket full of quarters). We’ve taken ours around the world and used it in RVs and hotel rooms alike.

When we had a traditional RV black tank in the Class A RV, we used Happy Camper holding tank treatment . The product has no chemical smell and eliminated black tank odor without the use of formaldehyde.

Ranging in the definition of “necessity,” here are a bunch of RV camping gadgets that we love based on our own experience or recommended by others in our RV Lifestyle Community .

Camping in the woods means you and your pets will likely encounter ticks. The TickKey products are great for easy and quick tick removal.

#2 MPOWERD Luci Outdoor Inflatable Solar Lantern

We have several of these solar lanterns, and they are awesome!

Rather than worrying about running out of batteries, you just place these in sunlight during the day, and they’ll produce light all night.

We generally always have them on hand, especially if we’re boondocking .

#3 Mophie Powerstation

This is one of my favorite must-have RV camping gadgets.

I always keep one fully charged and handy. There’s enough energy with a full charge to charge my laptop once or my smartphone three times.

Plus, you don’t have to worry about running a vehicle battery down charging cellular devices.

#4 Midland LXT500VP3 2-Way Radios

Two-way radios are truly a must-have camping gadget that everyone should invest in!

Jennifer and I have a pair of these that we use when hiking or when we simply need to communicate from a distance. We’ve found this specific model to be very reliable, so I’d recommend them to anyone.

One of our most common uses is when backing into a camping site. Instead of relying on hand signals in the mirror, Jennifer uses the walky-talky to tell me left or right or STOP! That's why we include walkie-talkies in our “Backing Up an RV” Learner’s Kit .

#5 A2S Survival Paracord Bracelet

This is a must-have camping gadget that could potentially save your life. It’s a cool all-purpose tool that you conveniently wear on your wrist.

If you do a great deal of hiking deep into the woods, then you should definitely check these out!

It has a built-in compass, fire starter, whistle, emergency knife, and yards of paracord you can use as a rope. It's a tool you hope never to need but should definitely have.

#6 J5 Tactical V1-Pro Flashlight

This is my favorite flashlight, and I always keep one handy! It has LED bulbs, 300 Lumens, and has three modes.

Not only is it bright, but it’s a great flashlight to carry in your pocket because of its small size.

This is a must-have camping gadget for anyone who camps with their dogs. As most of you know, Jennifer and I bring our boy Bo on every camping trip. Though he’s well-trained and won’t venture far away from us, we don't like to take any chances.

If you’re camping with your beloved dog , then do yourself a favor and invest in a GPS dog tracker. On the off chance that your dog gets loose or spooked and runs away, it’ll be much easier to find him in the strange location.

This is one bright headlamp! It has 165 lumens, and we love it! In fact, Jennifer and I both have one of these.

We use them even just walking around the campsite at night and pack them in our hiking packs.

#10 EDC Survival Kit

An EDC Kit is an “Every Day Carry” kit that can work as an emergency survival kit. They usually include survival gear items, like medical supplies, fishing tools, folding cutting devices, poncho, and other excellent survival items.

If you looked at the previous survival gear items on this list and said, “I need that and that and that…” then you might as well just get this. It comes with those items and more.

#11 Resqme Original Car Escape Tool

Okay, this isn't directly related to camping, but it is related to all the driving you do to go camping! We've seen too many accidents on the road in the hundreds of thousands of miles we've RVed to not have these.

We keep one in the RV and our passenger car and one on our keychain. In fact, I made sure each of my loved ones have one.

This tool will cut vehicle seatbelts and break windows. Even if we don't get in an accident ourselves, it gives us the ability to help others we come across.

#12 Leatherman Multitoo l

A multitool can come in very handy when traveling. It can even help save a life!

Whether you need to open a can of food for survival or cut a wire that no longer serves a purpose, this handy device does it all.

The Leatherman Signal has 19 tools in one! Not only does it have a cutting device, but it comes with pliers, wire cutters, hammer, saw, bottle and can openers, and a diamond-coated sharpener.

Talk about a great tool to throw in your RV drawer!

These little devices really come in handy! Not only can they provide light where you need it. They are also a fan to keep you cool on stuffy camping evenings.

Use the light for up to 37 hours without having to change batteries.

They are small and compact to easily store when traveling.

Never get a bad night of sleep again while camping! This excellent camping pillow is 100% polyester memory foam to conform to your body.

Lightweight and portable, the small pillow opens to a 12 x 16 inch rectangle. The medium expands to a 14 x 18 inch size for the ultimate in comfort.

When you are done using it, compress it back down to fit into its waterproof stuff sack. It's a great option for an RVer's stargazing kit !

Did it get dirty while camping? When you get home, machine wash it and dry.

#15 Thermacell Mosquito Repellent Patio Shield

Thermacell Mosquito Repellent Lantern Best Mosquito Repellent Device for Camping

Thermacell products are fuel-powered technology that uses heat-activated repellent to keep bugs at bay. They are sometimes called a Thermacell lantern or repellent mat. They create a scent-free and invisible bug barrier.

They are powered by small gas canisters that give portable, cordless heat to a metal grill. The repellent mat sits on top of the heated grill and disperses the repellent into the air. That is what provides the zone of protection from mosquitos.

Some Thermacell devices can require a 12-hour refill, while others can last up to 90 hours!

This is a smaller, more portable version of the Thermacell Patio Shield. They are both supposed to cover a 15-foot zone, but I'd recommend the patio shield for your campsite, and this portable one for your hiking, fishing, etc.

It comes with a belt clip, as well as a 12-hour fuel cartridge, and three 4-hour repellent mats. It repels mosquitoes without DEET sprays or harsh odors and has a 2-year warranty with registration.

#17 Portable Solar Charger Power Bank

This is a solar-powered version of the Mophie Powerstation we listed at the beginning. It's a great external backup battery pack in case you don't have access to any electricity.

It's highly durable, waterproof, and portable, so you can pop it into your hiking pack. It also has a 2-LED flashlight and compass, which are a nice bonus.

#18 weBoost Drive X RV Cellular Amplifier

Okay, this gadget is expensive. But it's the best in its class.

I work from the road, so having solid cellular coverage is essential, but it’s not always possible with just our carrier alone.

This is why we use this weBoost cellular amplifier, which is geared to the RVer. These devices boost cellular signals , and with the one I use, I have coverage pretty much everywhere I go.

They have lots of models from which to choose, and I can confidently recommend this brand because I’ve used several of their models throughout the years. The Drive X RV is the best of the bunch.

#19 JBL Flip Bluetooth Speaker

This is one of our must-have camping gadgets for enjoying life on the road. The speaker is very versatile, waterproof, and has great sound quality.

We use it mainly to listen to podcasts and music, but recently we started using it for the audio when we talk to our family at home via FaceTime. It's also handy when streaming movies over our laptop or tablet.

A portable jump starter can be a lifesaver when on the road.

I am a huge fan of Luci lights – keep one on the dash of every vehicle. Boondocking, I can use all evening, saving the battery for things besides reading in bed, knitting, etc. Being solar, I never have to worry about having spare batteries. They are well designed, well made, and waterproof.

Must have item for us, Frig-A-Mate or that what it used to be called. We have been using these in our RV for over 40 years. It is a little battery operated fan, powered by 2 d cell batteries, that last 2 – 3 months. With the gravity type RV fridge air is circulated only when you open the door. This thing aids in cool downs, when you first turn it on. It helps equalizes the temp thru out the fridge. It prevents lettuce and other items from freezing. It doesn’t take care of all the issues of an RV type frig but I say improves things about 70 %. Remember, the headlamps are great but be courteous and turn them off or look down when you are approaching other walkers. The lights can be blinding. I don’t think you would shine a flashlight directly into someone’s face but that is what you are doing since the beam shines in the direction you are looking. Same etiquette applies with headlamps.

RV Camping Gear Guide: Travel trailer essentials

If we’ve learned anything thru owning a truck camper, 30′ travel trailer and now a 17′ travel trailer, it’s that you’re just getting started when you purchase your RV. No matter what you get, they never come outfitted to serve all your comforts and needs. Outfitting your RV to make it the most fun, functional and comfortable is a project, but the more it starts to feel like home and the easier it is to use, the more fun you’re bound to have.

Here’s our list of essential gear for RVing with a travel trailer:

These are all being used with our 17′ Casita Spirit Deluxe. Some but not all items will apply to most RVs such as fifth wheels and motor homes.

Single Axle Tire Leveler . We love this thing. It’s a little bulky to haul around but is probably the easiest way to get our trailer level as it eliminates the need for moving the trailer on to blocks. Fun fact: it stows away perfectly in this 20×20 pizza bag . (These are the leveling blocks we used for our tandem axle travel trailer)

Single Axle Tire Chock . I feel confident our trailer isn’t going anywhere with this chock. We previously had these plastic wheel chocks but like this option much better.

X-Chock Wheel Stabilizer . This ended up being the chock we liked best for our tandem axle trailer.

Stabilizing scissor jacks. I think many RVs come with these but ours did not. Adding them on each corner of the trailer makes it rock solid when parked. We especially can’t feel a thing in high winds, which we enjoy.

Rear view back up camera . Having a back-up camera (especially a wide angle one like this one) makes the process of hooking up to our trailer so much easier. I back up the truck, Mark hooks up the trailer and we’re off. It takes us about two minutes.

Hitch lock kit . We use this hitch lock and padlock to secure our trailer when it’s not attached to the truck.

Camco RhinoFlex RV sewer hose kit . This purchase was a no-brainer. As is anything that will make the chore of dumping tanks as hassle-free as possible. This hose is sturdy and does not flop all over the place like a slinky. We’ve watched people at dump stations fumble around with those cheap hoses, risking their you-know-what flying all over the place, and I can’t help but wonder why everyone doesn’t have one of these hoses. Do yourself a favor and pick one of these up, you’ll be glad you did.

Disposable gloves . An essential item for dumping tanks.

Happy Campers sewer tank treatment . Organic, bio-degradable treatment that eliminates odor and liquefies waste.

Clear RV sewer hose adapter . This adapter allows you to monitor your black and grey tanks as they drain. The bend in this adapter means less bend in your hose for better flow.

Camco Grey/Black water hose . This hose is for flushing out your black and grey tanks while keeping any possible contaminants separate from your fresh water hose.

Holding tank rinser . This wand dislodges and flushes any waste deposits leftover after emptying your black tank.

Fresh water hose . Drinking water safe hose for connecting water services to your RV.

RV water filter . Reduces bad taste, odors, chlorine and sediment in your drinking water.

30 amp surge protector . This protects your sensitive electronics from unreliable electricity in campgrounds.

Tri-metric battery monitor . Before you invest in upgraded batteries or solar power, get one of these. It will help you determine your power needs and keep track of the health of your batteries. AM Solar Tri-Metric Wire Harness Kit . This kit includes the shunt and power cables needed to connect the tri-metric battery monitor.

Hi there! Just an fyi…take a look at the hitch lock from Proven Industries. I have one on my new 17ft Escape trailer. Not cheap…but certainly heavy duty and the lock itself is protected. Almost impossible to pry or cut off. Might give it a looksee. I’m not with the company…just really like the product. Might also consider a square link motorcycle security chain and Stanley hardened steel lock through the wheel. Safe travels and love your blog! Any trouble traveling with your dogs? I see you have Pitties…I have one of my own.

The biggest problem we’ve ever had traveling with dogs is cactus which is proving to be quite challenging for us at the moment (we’re outside Phoenix). Kaia got some jumping cholla stuck to her face just the other day. Having sturdy work gloves and pliers on hand are proving to be necessary tools while in AZ this year. That cholla is nasty stuff. Other than that, we just always try to stay on top of the breed-specific laws to make sure we don’t go anywhere that pitties aren’t allowed. It’s too bad we have to do that but we want to make sure we don’t end up anywhere that they’re illegal.

RhinoFLEX Rhino Blaster Sewer Tank Rinser (WITH GATE VALVE)

Rinsing our black water tank after dumping has always been a hassle. It took forever to fill the black tank with water to flush it out. We would have to hold the toilet valve open or drag a hose through the RV window to fill the black tank through the toilet.

But now flushing the black (and gray) water tank is super easy. We just use the Rhino Blaster and connect a hose to it to quickly and easily fill the black water tank.

The key is to buy the Rhino Blaster with the Gate Valve . RhinoFlex sells the Blaster without the gate valve for less money, but without it, you can’t fill your black tank because the water is pouring down the sewer hose at the same time you are shooting water into the black tank. Anyway, this is a great item that has made maintaining our black tank way easier. We absolutely recommend this product!

RhinoFLEX 15ft RV Sewer Hose Kit

This the Sewer Hose we have on board our RV! It is tough, has a translucent elbow and fits in our bumper for easy storage!

The RhinoFlex heavy duty sewer hoses are awesome! You can step on them, which I have done, and they won’t break! And the fittings on each end stay connected!

Don’t waste your money on a cheap $10 sewer hose. We did that once and the end fitting came off! Ugh!!! We threw it away right at the dump station and got ourselves the best sewer hose we could find. Trust me, you should do the same so you never experience the shock and horror of a broken sewer hose.

Sewer Hose Support

A sewer hose support is used to make sure your sewer hose flows downhill from your RV to where it dumps into the sewer system.

The type we use cascades slowly so we can maintain proper gravity flow so we avoid a belly in the hose which could create a backup!

And nobody wants a backup to occur!

Sewer Hose Weights

Our sewer hose weights are used where the sewer hose drains into the sewer pipe.

The reason we use them is that sometimes when you open the gate valve on your black or gray tank a large amount of water releases quickly and causes the hose to jump!

If this happens, the end of the sewer hose can pop out of the sewer drain, and you will have a big mess to clean up! So, we love using our sewer weights to make sure this doesn’t happen to us!

Heavy Duty Nitrile Gloves

Have your rubber gloves ever ripped while you were putting them on? Or worse yet while you were in the process of dumping your black tank? Well, mine have and I found it very frustrating.

So, I set out to find the best gloves on the market and I found them! They are orange nitrile gloves made by a company called Gloveworx and they are absolutely the best gloves I have ever used.

Why? Because they are thicker than other gloves, so they are less likely to tear. And they are puncture resistant too! Plus every glove has a diamond pattern molded into them, so it is really easy to grip and hold onto things – like plastic sewer hoses and fittings – without them slipping.

These are the only gloves I recommend, and I bet you will love them too!

Aqua-Kem RV Holding Tank Treatment

Have you ever been driving down the road in your RV and been falsely accused of creating a noxious odor? Well, I have. And even though I am occasionally guilty of this crime – sometimes it’s not me! It’s the black tank!

So, after trying several brands we found that the RV smells much better when we use Auqa-Kem – and I avoid eating too many hotdogs.

There are lots of toilet chemicals on the market but we think Aqua-Kem is the best camper toilet chemical product out there. Just read all of the 5-star reviews! Nothing beats it and we agree!

Aqua Soft RV and Marine Toilet Tissue

You can use regular toilet paper from your house in your RV. But you are taking a big risk that you might clog your black tank or get toilet paper stuck on one of your black tank sensors. And it is a pain in the butt to clean wads of toilet paper out of a black tank or its sensors.

So, rather than go through all of that just use toilet paper specially made for RVs so it dissolves and doesn’t clump.

When it comes to Toilet Tissue softness is the biggest concern for most folks. We have tried several toilet tissues and Aqua Soft seems to be the best we have found. Definitely, a must have for your camper or travel trailer.

RV Wheel Chocks

The Tri-Lynx Wheel Chocks work together with the Tri-Lynx Leveling Blocks to ensure that you’ll hit the top of the stack every time! We also like them because they are bright orange so we don’t leave them behind when we break camp.

Leveling Blocks with Storage Bag

We love these modular levelers not only because they are strong but they are bright orange so we don’t forget them when we drive off! Leveling blocks are an absolute must have for any camper.

Zero G 25′ Fresh Water Drinking Hose

The Zero-G Hose is a fantastic hose. So many hoses kink, thereby cutting off or reducing your water supply. This hose will not kink. It’s the best freshwater hose out there.

Adjustable RV Water Pressure Regulator

This adjustable water pressure regulator is accurate and ensures that you won’t overpressure your water lines and possibly pop a plumbing leak! It’s another must have product that we recommend to help save you from spending big money on plumbing problems!

Dual Water Filter with Mounting Bracket

We recently switched from the cheapo Camco TastePure Water Filter to the Beech Lane Dual Water Filter . It costs a little more but the water quality is far superior. Now that we have a real water filter I’m embarrassed to admit that we ever used the cheap blue canister type of water filter. If you want great tasting water with no odors, then the dual water filter setup is the way to go. I guarantee you will notice the difference immediately.

Camco 90 Degree Hose Elbow

A 90 Degree Hose Elbow helps to keep your fresh water hose from bending or kinking when hooked up to the city water connection on your RV. We bought one to make sure we get good water flow into the RV but also because it takes the weight of the hose off of the plastic city water fitting on our RV. When we RV we like to leave the windows open at night rather than run the A/C. But sometimes it is just too hot inside the RV to do that. We wished we had more windows to open to get more airflow. So we figured we could at least get a windshield visor to keep some of the heat out of our RV during the day and that way maybe it would be cooler at night.

While we were searching for a windshield visor, we found the perfect solution to our problem. The new windshield cover we found has side window screens built into it so we can roll down the driver and passenger side windows and get much more airflow without bugs flying into the RV! And it also reduces the amount of heat that enters the RV.

Another great benefit of our windshield cover is that we no longer need to use the privacy curtain. This gives us easy access to the front seats so we can get to the radio, glove box or our USB chargers. We can also use the front seats for storage while we camp. And, without the privacy curtain up, the inside of the RV feels much larger too!

Have you ever noticed that the bottom step on the RV is too far from the ground? Your foot searches for the ground and the next thing you know you make that awkward lurch toward the ground. In my case, that’s when I spill the drinks!

So, we bought a step to bridge the gap from the bottom step to the ground. We find that having a step just makes entering and exiting the RV safer and more convenient, especially when we are carrying drinks or plates of food.

The step we use is awesome because each individual leg is fully adjustable so it works great if the ground is uneven. And it folds to just 3 inches deep so it is easy to store. This is a great accessory to keep onboard your camper too.

GrassWorx Doormat

Our RV floors used to get dirty pretty quickly. We almost always take our shoes off when we walk inside the RV but we were still tracking some dirt inside. And then when we were barefoot or in socks inside the RV, we could feel that gritty feeling on the floors! So, we bought one of these grass style doormats and what a difference!

These mats really do a great job scrubbing the dirt or sand off the bottom of our shoes. So, we end up sweeping and vacuuming the RV less often because it stays cleaner longer! It made a huge difference for us. It’s totally worth the minimal cost.

But we also use it outside to stay cool on really hot days. And this might sound crazy but we like a campfire – even in the summertime. So we use it outside to keep us cool on warm summer evenings while sitting in front of the campfire. It’s a must-have item for us!

Imagine going camping or worse yet boondocking in a remote location and having a dead battery or getting stuck! What would you do? I’ll be honest, I don’t even know how old the battery is in my RV. Which means one day it will go dead and probably without any warning. And I can’t tell you how many times we have driven our RV off the beaten path looking for that perfect camping spot or a beautiful view. We’ve taken some chances and almost got stuck more than a few times.

So, we decided to buy an emergency roadside kit. Why? Mainly because it comes with jumper cables and a tow rope. But it also includes roadside tools we might need, an emergency blanket, an 11-in-1 multi-tool, a flashlight, bungee cords, a magnesium fire starter, a reflective roadside warning sign, and much more.

We don’t want to get stuck in a bad situation and not be as prepared as we can be. We think this kit is a must-have item for any camper. We have one in our RV and suggest you keep one in yours too. You never know when you will need it – until you need it.

First Aid Kit

So here we are camping one weekend with Susan’s little grandson. We were having a great time and he was excited and went running down the road ahead of us and tripped and fell. As you can imagine, he skinned up his knees and hands pretty badly.

We didn’t have a first aid kit on board when this happened. We had some band-aids and that was about it – unless you count duct tape as a first-aid item. I felt bad that we didn’t really have the proper first aid items to clean and bandage him up properly.

So we decided to buy a good first aid kit just in case anyone got hurt. We found a great brand called Swiss Safe which has thousands of 5-star reviews. It’s a great compact kit that we can easily store on board in case we ever need it. Maybe you should too.

NOAA Emergency Weather Radio

The NOAA Emergency Weather Radio is a fantastic emergency item every RVer should have on hand because you never know when you will not have cell service. And if you have no cell service, a radio can save the day!

But, the NOAA Weather radio is much more than just a weather radio. It can pick up AM and FM stations too! And it also is a flashlight, an emergency strobe light, a power charger, and it even has a dog whistle so a search dog can find you.

It requires no batteries because it has a hand crank to create electricity! Which is perfect if you are in an emergency situation. We keep ours in the RV most of the time, but we also throw it in the backpack when we go hiking, off roading, or surf fishing. It’s an essential emergency item that we love and highly recommend you keep on board your RV too!

Tire Pressure Monitoring System

We purchased our Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) for two reasons. Safety and better gas mileage.

A good TPMS tells you the tire pressure and temperature for every tire on your RV. In our case, we have six tires.

If we have a tire that is low or flat, we can repair the tire before we end up having an accident.

But a huge secondary benefit of a TPMS is making sure that your tires are properly inflated at all times because that will help to maximize your gas mileage.

We drove our RV across Canada from the Michigan border to Niagra Falls and we only got 7.8 miles per gallon. I was so bummed! But then I realized that our tire pressure was at 60 psi instead of 80 psi. As soon as I inflated the tires, our mpg increased to 9.5! That’s a big difference! If only I had the TPMS, I would have known this and properly inflated my tires to get better gas mileage and save a bunch of money.

So, you could be like me and think “I won’t get into an accident because my tires are low” and you might be right. But you will absolutely drive your RV on any given day with low tire pressure and cost yourself lot’s of money at the gas pump. And you could have a tire blowout!

This is a fantastic device that will definitely save you money – and maybe save your life.

We keep a can of Bear Spray on board the RV because we love to hike and bike wherever we happen to be. And very often we are in bear country.

So, we found this bear spray which has a sheath that attaches right to my belt so if we have a surprise encounter – and we have – the bear spray is within easy reach. It won’t do you any good to fumble through your back pack looking for it when you need it fast! And it shoots up to 35 feet! The further the better in my opinion.

We also like to keep it on hand in case anyone threatens our safety too. We keep it in the cabinet above the door in our RV as a persoanl safety measure as well. You never know when you will need it, but someday it’s likely that you will.

Fire Extinguisher

Obviously everyone should have a fire extinguisher on board their RV. And most folks do.

But you should be sure to check the expiration date on your fire extinguisher to be sure it’s up to date so it works when you need it!

This is especially true if you buy a used RV because the fire extinguisher will most likely be as old as the RV. When we bought our RV, which is a 2008, we discovered that the fire extinguisher had expired so we bought a new one right away.

Not all fire extinguishers have expiration dates though. So, if yours is 5 years old or older, or you don’t know how old it is, you should probably get a new one. Better safe than sorry.

DampRid Moisture Absorber

We use DampRid all year long in our RV to absorb moisture and keep our RV smelling fresh. It’s a fantastic product that we highly recommend.

Lightweight Cordless Drill, Battery and Charger

I’ve owned a Ryobi cordless drill for years and it is a great drill. The battery lasts forever and the keyless chuck makes changing bits super easy. I highly recommend this product as it has served me very well over the years.

RV Ladder Mount Bike Rack

The first time we rented an RV we had two bikes with us and we actually carried them into the RV and bungee corded them to the dinette table leg to secure them while we traveled.

We have come a long way since then! Our ladder-mount bike rack is awesome. It holds our two bikes, and it is very lightweight but incredibly strong.

We love to bring our bikes with us everywhere we go because, in our opinion, biking is the perfect speed to sightsee! And this bike rack is by far the best one we have found.

OIut Thule hitch mount bike rack is perfect for hauling around oue Lectric Bikes. It can hold up to 130 lbs., and it even has a ramp so we can roll the bikes into position rather than lifting them.

It is very sturdy and it can withstand all the bumps we experience while driving down the road. It’s not cheap but it is by far the best bike rack on the market for electric bikes. We love to bring our bikes with us everywhere we go because, in our opinion, biking is the perfect speed to sightsee! And this bike rack is by far the best one we have found.

Zero Gravity Lounge Chair Recliners

These Zero Gravity Lounge Chairs have become our full-time chairs when we go camping. We have the other upright regular folding camping chairs but they hurt my back because I would sink down into the chair. In an attempt to make myself more comfortable I would actually grab one of the dinette backrest pillows and sit on it while in my camping chair.

Then one weekend we took all 4 of our camping chairs out of the RV and forgot to put them back. When we went camping all we had were the zero gravity chairs. Oh no! But that’s when the light bulb went on for me! I realized over the weekend that I could just use my zero gravity chair full time when we go camping and be much more comfortable.

Not only are these chairs much more comfortable for sitting around the campfire but we took them to a concert at a Harvest Host Winery and to movie night at another campground. They are also awesome for star gazing! We definitely recommend these chairs!

We have seen soo many disgusting things (like sewer hoses and bags of dog poop) on campground picnic tables over the years that a picnic table cover is a must for us.

LITO Tablecloths are designed to last for years. There are lots of colors to choose from, and these heavy-duty tablecloths are incredibly durable. They are waterproof sturdy, and beautiful!

We absolutely love our camping table. We always set it up when we are sitting in front of the campfire at night and it holds our drinks, snacks, cell phones, and outdoor speaker. The lower shelf is great too for a flashlight or whatever else you need. We actually have the red and the black colored tables. This is definitely an RVBlogger favorite!

Our collapsible trash can is great! It is light weight and stows away easily! We just add a trashbag inside and use the zip top to keep the flies away!

This is so much nicer than hanging a trash bag off a tree or side view mirror!

We used to use citronella candles to keep mosquitos away from our campsite. Then Susan decided to try the Thermacell Rechargeable Mosquito Repeller and what a huge difference!

This thing really works and actually protects very well within a 20′ radius. Plus we can recharge it so we don’t have to fool around with batteries. This is definitely an RVBlogger favorite!

Solar USB or Phone Charger

We love our Solar Charger. It has 2 USB Charger ports so we can charge both our phones at the same time. It also has a built-in flashlight. It even has a lighter port on the side that can be used to light a fire. This charger is solid, heavy duty and works great! Honestly, I don’t know how long it holds a charge because I’ve never run it completely down. I just keep it in the sun or attach it to my backpack and it recharges while we are hiking or biking in the sun. Even after it sits unused for an extended period it still has a charge when I turn it on.

It doesn’t have to be in the sun to use it – just to re-charge it. And it’s waterproof and shockproof. I’ve had mine for several years now and it is awesome!

Coleman Propane Stove or Grill Top Coffee Maker

So, how are you supposed to make coffee in the morning if your campsite has no electric and it’s quiet time so you can’t fire up the generator? We run into this problem when we camp in State Parks because they typically have no electricity but they do have generator quiet times to deal with.

So, we discovered the propane percolator coffee maker. We just use it right on the stove top in our RV! We don’t even have to go outside to set it up on the camp stove unless we want to.

The coffee maker makes great coffee and it’s just like using our electric coffee maker. Just put in the filter, coffee and add water. Turn on the propane and in a few minutes we have fresh hot coffee. One other nice benefit is that we can control how fast it percolates. We like strong coffee so we use a lower flame setting to boil the water more slowly and it makes stronger coffee this way. Perfect!

The Bose Soundlink is waterproof, compact and has incredible sound quality. There are two important things to know about this speaker. First, although it is waterproof it does not float so tie a floating lanyard to it if you plan to be on the water. And second, it is a much better speaker than it’s more colorful (and more expensive) successor the Soundlink II. So save your money and buy the original Soundlink. You will love it too!

We use our collapsible bucket for all sorts of things. We use it to collect the A/C condensation so we can douse our fire at night. We also use it to conserve water when we wash the dishes. And we also use it to collect the cold shower water before the water warms up. This keeps un-necessary water from going into our grey tank. I even use it when I wash the RV!

RV Camping Mat

We really try to keep the inside of the RV as clean as possible. We just can’t stand the feeling of dirt or sand on our feet when we are in socks or barefoot inside the RV. So, we discovered these RV Camping mats which are great for creating an outside 9′ x 12′ patio that helps to keep us from tracking dirt or sand into the RV. It’s essential to have the camping mat if you ever camp at the beach or in a sandy area. It makes a huge difference in the sand.

When combined with the Grassworx doormat listed above we are able to keep the inside of the RV cleaner for longer. It’s nice to get out of the bed in the middle of the night to use the bathroom and not feel sand or dirt on the floor.

Adjustable Drink Holder

Sometimes when we go to bed at night and we get thirsty it means we have to get out of bed and open the fridge to grab a water bottle or Gatorade because we don’t have nightstands in our RV. There is nowhere to put a drink before going to sleep. It’s a pain in the butt because Susan and I wake up if the other one of us gets out of bed.

They come in a few different colors and they adjust to hold cups, mugs and just about every size of can or bottle. Plus they fold up when not in use!

We got our Happy Camper coasters as a gift from a friend. They are bright and cheery and add a homey feel to the RV when we are camping. Even if you don’t buy them for yourself they make a perfect gift for that RVer in your life!

Camp Quitcherbitchin Sign

We use this sign against each other whenever possible. Just kidding! A friend of ours gave it to us as a gift and we think it’s funny.

The nice thing is it just hangs on a cabinet knob so we can stow it away safely when on the road and easily put it up when we get to our campsite. It definitely adds to the ambiance in the RV.

Doesn’t everyone have a USA State by State sticker map? We do and we love adding a new sticker every time we camp in a new state. Our rule is that we have to spend the night in the RV in a state to put the state sticker on the map. Just something we think is fun to do! One day we will have every state on the board!

Universal Stove Top Cover

I don’t know about you but we definitely do not have enough countertop space in our RV. The sink is right next to the stove which leaves about 4″ of countertop space. Yikes! So, luckily we found this stovetop cover and now we have a place to set up the coffee maker and toaster in the morning or a place to put our cups if we want to pour a soda.

The great thing about this stovetop cover is that it is universal so you don’t have to guess if the stovetop cover will actually fit on your stove. We bought ours and used the template on the back to measure where to install the rubber cups that stick to the burner grates. It was very easy to install and now we have extra countertop space. And the rubber cups that hold it in place prevent it from squeaking too!

Tochta Mattress

We sleep great on our Tochta Mattress. Tochta makes mattresses for RVs in all shapes and sizes and they even have corner cut mattresses.

Our mattress is a dual layer foam mattress and it is incredibly comfortable. It’s more comfy than our mattress at home! No more back aches from sleeping on a cheap 4″ mattress. The only regret we have is not buying one sooner!

Camping Tent: The North Face Wawona 6 ($500)

No piece of gear is as vital for a successful camping trip than a quality camping tent , which serves as your main refuge from the elements. The North Face’s Wawona 6 gets our top billing for 2023, with a spacious, tunnel-like interior that sleeps up to six, a massive front vestibule that doubles as a covered seating area, and hybrid double-wall construction that vents well and isn’t prone to condensation buildup. The Wawona comes in both four- and six-person varieties, but we love the six-person even for smaller families (it’s great for hanging out in inclement weather), and the 80-inch peak height means that most won’t have to hunch over when inside. At $500 for the larger version, the TNF is a great value and even more affordable than some camping tents from budget-focused REI Co-op, including their $549 Base Camp 6 and $599 Wonderland 6 .

Rooftop Tent: Roofnest Condor XL ($3,695)

The rootftop tent market has exploded as of late, and Colorado-based Roofnest has set itself apart with a number of premium designs. While many companies (like Thule, for example) specialize in softshell tents, Roofnest offers three styles of hardshells, which we prefer for their durability, ease of setup, and superior weather protection. Their Condor is an intriguing hybrid and our current favorite: Unlike most hardshell options that are set up by simply popping the top, the Condor features a fold-out design that effectively doubles the size of the footprint. The end result is a sleeping area for four (larger than a king-size bed), alongside all of the features we love in a hardshell design.

Roofnest wasn’t the originator of the fold-out hardshell—that was iKamper with their Skycamp—but their take on the concept offers similar quality at a better price. For $500 less than the Skycamp 3.0, the Condor tacks on a few additional inches of headroom, has a slightly larger floor area (47.8 sq. ft. vs. 44.3 sq. ft.), and features a significantly shorter footprint (easier to maneuver on and off). But if you’re a solo traveler or couple, the king-size bed of these premium hybrids might feel over the top, and you can save by opting for a pop-up or clamshell style like the Roofnest Sparrow or Falcon instead. True budget shoppers will want to look at softshell tents, and our favorite is the Thule Approach ($2,800) . But for the best combination of durability, ease of setup, interior space, and value, the Condor XL is our favorite rooftop tent of the year.

Good sleep on a camping trip is not overrated—and it often comes down to a quality camping mattress . But what makes one more comfortable than another? There are a wide variety of constructions to choose from, but we’ve come to prefer the combination of self-inflating design with a soft foam core. The Therm-a-Rest MondoKing 3D nails the formula, with 4.25 inches of loft, vertical sidewalls that allow you to spread out to the very edge without being at risk of falling off, soft yet durable fabric, and inner foam that’s both supportive and plush. And the most recent MondoKing 3D comes with dedicated inflate/deflate valves, making it quicker and easier to set up and take down.

Our top pick for the best camping sleeping bag of 2023 goes to REI Co-op’s Siesta Hooded 20, which checks all the boxes for most recreational campers in a well-built and affordable package. The three-season-friendly temperature rating of 20 degrees will keep you cozy down to around freezing (with a recommended 10-degree buffer added in), and the roomy rectangular shape is comfortable and not restrictive (bonus: It comes with a hood, which isn’t always the case with rectangular models). The bag also boasts a handy zipper system for airing things or transforming the bag into a quilt in warm weather (you can also connect two single bags to form a double), as well as an interior stash pocket to stow smaller items you’d like to keep close by at night. At $139, the Siesta Hooded 20 is a great value from a brand we trust.

But there are a few downsides to keep in mind with the Siesta Hooded 20’s design. While most campers will appreciate the spaciousness of a rectangular bag, it does translate to reduced warmth, as there’s simply more air inside for your body to keep warm. In other words, a mummy bag is a far more efficient style, although the Siesta does come with a draft collar and cinch cord for helping seal in heat (plus the aforementioned hood). Second, the synthetic insulation lacks the premium loft, warmth-to-weight ratio, and packability of down. The flip side is a much lower price tag, along with a more durable design that can handle being thrown around (you don’t have to worry about feathers escaping) and the odd bit of moisture. For most campers, a bag like the Siesta Hooded is a great combination of features and value, and it also comes in a two-person Double version for $239.

What do we look for in a great camping blanket ? Warmth, durability, and value, for starters. Our top pick, the Original Puffy from Rumpl, hits all three—plus more. Rumpl is a relatively new brand, but they’ve helped define the modern camping blanket as we know it. Their flagship model, the Original Puffy, combines thick three-season-ready synthetic insulation with a reasonably hardwearing 30-denier shell and a durable water-repellent (DWR) finish to shed light moisture. A great selection of patterns and colorways adds to the blanket’s appeal, and it also sports thoughtful features like the “Cape Clip” to secure the blanket around your shoulders and corner loops for anchoring it down in the wind.

Personal preference weighs heavily for many camping chair shoppers—some prioritize cushy comfort while others prefer a lighter and more packable setup. Our top pick, the REI Co-op Skyward, achieves a great balance of these qualities at a reasonable price. Its strong steel frame inspires confidence, while X-shaped webbing in the seat and backpanel helps distribute weight evenly. And despite its sturdy build, the chair features a lot of mesh, allowing it to breathe well in warm weather and dry super quickly. Once you’re sitting, cup holders and drop-down pockets at the armrests provide convenient places to stow drinks or small items like keys or a phone. For just $60, you'd be hard-pressed to find a better value than the Skyward.

It's worth noting that the Skyward replaced REI’s popular Camp X for 2023, and the biggest change was an increase in ground-to-seat height (from 10.5 to 14 in.). This translates to a much more natural seating position and less effort required to get in and out of the chair. Those with taller and broader builds can step up to a more supportive option like the Alps Mountaineering King Kong or Coleman Oversized Quad Chair with Cooler, which have higher backpanels and larger seats. However, those chairs sit noticeably higher off the ground at around 18 inches—they’re downright throne-like—and are much bulkier when folded down. In our opinion, the Skyward strikes a much healthier balance of size and weight for most campers, and the mesh-heavy build is a boon in hot summer conditions (the Alps and Coleman both have solid backs).

Camping Stove: Eureka Ignite Plus ($160)

High-quality stove options for the camp chef abound in 2023. Our favorite, the Eureka Ignite Plus, combines reliable output and good simmer control on a wide, 23-inch cooking surface that can accommodate bigger pots and pans. The two 10,000-BTU burners are plenty powerful for most campers, and the fine-tuned control is crucial for more involved meals. In addition, the Ignite’s side shields do a good job of fending off light winds, the push-button ignition keeps your hands safe from large bursts of flame, and the locking lid and manageable 12-pound weight make for easy transport. The combination of these features, plus a reasonable price tag, push the Eureka Ignite Plus ahead of the competition.

Hard-Sided Cooler: RTIC 52 Ultra-Light ($200)

A quick look at the cooler market in 2023 begs the question: How much does a camper really need to spend to get decent ice retention and capacity? For the ideal balance of quality and affordability, the RTIC 52 Ultra-Light fits the bill better than the rest. At 21 pounds, it’s lighter than most hard-sided coolers of comparable size and quality, and undercuts nearly all of them in price at $200. And while most coolers in this size range check in at 45 or 65 quarts, the RTIC provides a versatile 52 quarts of storage, which is plenty for two people for a long weekend while still fitting easily in a car trunk. It’s also important to note that RTIC sells direct to consumers through their website (and often at a discount), keeping the RTIC surprisingly affordable for its quality.

The downside to RTIC’s direct-to-consumer model is that you can’t check out their coolers in person at your local retailer. The RTIC also falls a bit short in ice retention compared to more premium designs like the Yeti Tundra and Roadie, though not as much as might be expected given its lower price (the similarly sized Yeti Tundra 65 costs $175 more). In addition, the Ultra-Light is a bit less durable compared to the Tundra and other high-end options. But in the end, the RTIC’s low weight, solid performance, and reasonable price make it our favorite hard-sided cooler of the year.

Soft-Sided Cooler: RTIC Soft Pack Cooler 30 Can ($120)

Hard-sided coolers like the RTIC 52 Ultra-Light above are great for extended camping trips, but soft-sided models offer a few benefits for short outings like day trips, tailgating, or picking up perishables at the grocery store or farmer’s market. Namely, they’re generally cheaper, considerably lighter, and much easier to tote around. RTIC’s own Soft Pack Cooler 30 Can fits the bill nicely, combining respectable insulating capabilities and functional features in a reasonably priced, 2-pound package. On the outside, you get a noticeably thick and heavy-duty nylon shell that provides good structure, while 2 inches of closed-cell foam on the inside insulate well enough for day adventures or weekend road trips. And a final perk: The Soft Pack Cooler floats, making it a great option for activities like rafting and other water sports.

The Hydro Flask 20 L Day Escape is rated to keep ice frozen for up to 36 hours, which is more than many competitors. That said, those looking for the utmost in cold retention can step up to designs like Engel’s Roll Top High Performance or CamelBak’s ChillBak Pack 30 , both of which boast 72 hours of claimed ice retention. Those models are considerably heavier and far more rigid than the Hydro Flask (read: they don’t pack down well for storage), but the boost in insulation may be worth that tradeoff for some. Final nitpicks with the Day Escape include a lack of zippered storage and a fairly narrow opening that makes it difficult to stuff bulkier items like egg cartons through the top. But no backpack cooler is perfect, and the Hydro Flask puts it all together—including good all-around performance and practical features—in a thoughtful and streamlined package.

Our top pick, the Thule Motion XT, combines high-end features and finishes, comes in four sizes that accommodate skis of varying lengths, and slides into a nice price point for the level of quality at $900. Among the roof boxes we’ve tested, it’s the easiest to install and operate (it should work on most vehicles and crossbar sets), and we especially love the latch and lock, which operate as two separate mechanisms (great for longevity) and offer a high degree of security. You can pack for a camping trip in all sorts of ways—a backpack works, as does a Rubbermaid or a suitcase. But our favorite way to tote our camping gear is in duffel bags , thanks to their durability, easy access, and multiple carry options. Patagonia’s Black Hole lineup is our favorite: These duffels certainly get “cool” points, but that’s not all that nudges the 55-liter version into our top spot. What really shines is the Black Hole’s tough construction (900D ripstop nylon), moisture-shedding DWR finish, and premium build quality. The Patagonia also stands apart with its carrying comfort and features, including a wide U-shaped opening and backpack straps, which we’ve found to be more comfortable and functional than most. Plus, starting in 2022, all Black Hole Duffels are made with 100% recycled materials. It’s no wonder these duffels are often out of stock, though waitlists are available for patient shoppers.

Our one small gripe is that the Black Hole doesn’t boast a lot of structure—only the base is lightly padded—which is something to keep in mind when packing anything fragile or if you need to live out of your duffel for extended periods of time. It also rings up at the pricier end of the spectrum, especially for a duffel without wheels (which you won’t need—or want—for most camping scenarios). How long do camper trailers last?

Most camper trailers will last between 10 and 15 years. However, numerous factors determine the lifespan of a camper trailer, and the most unpredictable is the human element. Outside elements that affect the lifespan of a camper trailer include the original design, build quality, usage, and storage when not traveling.

Assuming it is a quality-built trailer, is stored properly when not in service, and received regular maintenance, it’s normal to see camper trailers in use after 15 years from when it was bought brand new.
