Ratings and Reviews

Best devotional.

I’ve been doing JTJ for the past four years and have loved every bit of it! The first year I did it we walked through the whole bible in a year, the next year was the gospels, last year was Psalms/Proverbs & this year is the book of Romans.! Each day you’ll read a passage, have a central truth, a devotional written by a member of Watermark, and discussion questions. Before doing JTJ, I was not in the word on a daily basis and honestly didn’t understand what I was reading. Now I love the word, and understand it! So thankful for this app & Watermark!

Excellent Resource!

If you’re looking for supplemental info, a companion app or motivation and encouragement to start walking through the Bible, look no further. This app along with the JTJ podcast have been excellent resources providing nothing but scripturally sound teaching. I really enjoy hearing from the WM members they have do the devotionals as well as some of the elders occasionally 👌

Great content. Minor bugs.

The content on this app is great. The layout looks great and I enjoy using it. I love it. Recently my wife and I both started experiencing issues where the devotional will stop loading new entries despite closing and restarting the app. Deleting and re-installing the app worked to refresh the entries to the latest. Wish this bug will be addressed, but other then that, I recommend this to anyone looking to spend intentional time with the Lord daily.

Join the Journey

Join The Journey (JTJ) is a realistic daily Bible-reading plan from Watermark Community Church that (at least in 2023) takes the reader from Genesis to Jesus.

  • Five days a week
  • Extensive devotional support including podcasts and printed journals for adults and children.

My Thoughts #

  • As described in the introduction of the Join the Journey Vol. 1 journal, this Join The Journey started in 2005. The lessons learned from nearly 20 years of experience shines through the thoughtfulness of the plan and supporting resources.
  • Like other plans , I appreciate the weekday rhythm as well as the acknowledgment of the church calendar with unique readings for Holy Week and Advent. (This looks to be a new addition for 2023.)
  • In addition, the devotional resources appear to be rich and artfully done.
  • While the 2022 plan covered the New Testament, the 2023 the plan covers the Old Testament. Although this is a helpful balance to 2022’s focus, not reading any New Testament until Advent feels like a gap.

S3:077 Job 31

In Job 31, Emma Dotter & Brent Buuemi ask the question: “How to keep up spiritual morale in dry season.” Brent compares suffering to having our face pressed against stained glass. Oftentimes we see the shattered glass and not the full picture. Brent & Emma talk to both types of listeners: those who have experienced severe suffering, and some maybe haven’t. Brent encourages us to solidify our beliefs before the tria...

S3:076 Job 30

Suffering is designed by the enemy to destroy our faith, but God’s design for suffering is to strengthen our faith. So how do we have this perspective of suffering? In today’s podcast, Emma Dotter is joined by a faithful Watermark Member George Dalton to unpack this question. George leaves us with this thought, “I welcome the scalpel of the Spirit to continue to cut away the ugly dross in my heart so I can see God and be a...

S3:075 Job 29

In Job 29, Job is looking back and remembering his life before all these hard things happened. Sometimes, this is something that we can also do. However, something we see throughout Scripture is that suffering and hardships are what lead to intimate friendship with God. Emma Dotter and faithful Watermark Member Emily Hill unpack these truths and more in today’s Join the Journey Podcast.    Additional Scripture in thi...

Job is asking the exact questions that we may be feeling as we read. Emma Dotter interviews Ben Krejci, a Watermark member and consistent friend of the podcast. S3:067 Job 21

Why do the wicked prosper? Today, Emma Dotter is joined by faithful Watermark member Casey Uphues to talk through Job 21. Ultimately, God has conquered death and evil through the death and resurrection of His Son Jesus Christ.

S3:066 Job 20

If I am suffering does that mean I am wicked? Today, Hannah Staubs is joined by fellow Watermark Institute student, Patrick Camp, to talk through Job 20. If we are in Christ, our sin has been paid for by Jesus on the cross, and there is no condemnation left for us.    SCRIPTURE:

S3:065 Job 19

Tiffany Haddish opens up about journey to peace amid a difficult past

The comedienne and actress shared how sobriety and celibacy, as well as eight miscarriages, have impacted her journey to personal peace ahead of the release of her second book.

Tiffany Haddish is over the fame, but she’s looking forward to what’s to come in her life.

As she prepares for the May 7 release of her new memoir, “I Curse You with Joy,” which follows her 2017 New York Times bestseller, “The Last Black Unicorn,” the comedienne and actress is opening up about her journey to finding peace amid controversy — which started with her decision to remove alcohol from her diet, according to People magazine .

“This is my challenge to people. Stop drinking for six months, and just see how your life changes,” said Haddish. “You’re going to have your snatched body back, you’re going to see your relationships will be better, and you’ll stop dealing with people you don’t need to be dealing with.”

Tiffany Haddish memoir

“My issue was,” she shared, “I was waking up next to ugly men.”

Police arrested the “Girls Trip” star in Georgia in January 2022 after they found her asleep behind the wheel. She was charged with DUI and improper stopping on a roadway. In November, police found her asleep in her car in the middle of an intersection in Beverly Hills, resulting in another DUI arrest in Los Angeles.

“I’m very sober,” she shared recently, noting that it’s been a key ingredient in her happiness. “I haven’t had a drink since [the November incident]. When I sit back and look at my life, everything that’s crazy that’s happened is because somebody or myself had alcohol in their system.”

The actress revealed that she is also celibate, even though she is dating.

“They went together,” said Haddish on cutting out alcohol and sex simultaneously.

Haddish’s memoir has also pushed her to get transparent about the heartache she’s endured throughout her reproductive health battle, People reported.

The Grammy Award-winning comic learned last year that she has endometriosis, a condition in which the endometrium grows outside the uterus and can cause pelvic pain.

“I’m pretty sure the devil is real,” said Haddish, “because the first day of my period, no matter what, the devil goes into overdrive. I feel like my life gets turned upside down.”

While Haddish has learned to manage her heavy and painful periods, the most severe potential side effect of endometriosis for her has been pregnancy losses. The “Haunted Mansion” star shared that she has suffered eight miscarriages , and even though she’s not entirely sold on getting married for a second time or becoming a mom, there’s a part of her that wants to.

“I’ve got all this love,” Haddish told People, “I should give it to somebody who can grow with it.”

Life's journey often leads us down unexpected paths. One moment, you're entrenched in a career as a biological technician, the next, you find yourself amidst the flames as a wildland fire apprentice. This unpredictability is precisely what Lindsey Green encountered as she transitioned from her previous profession to her current role at Pocosin Lakes National Wildlife Refuge in North Carolina. Join us as we look at this apprentice’s journey into the world of wildland fire, exploring the moments that have shaped her career trajectory.

Q: How long have you been in fire?

A firefighter turns and looks at the camera over her shoulder, smiling for a photo. She is dressed in Nomex and is lighting a prescribed fire. The landscape is grasses and Longleaf Pine trees.

Prior to joining the Wildland Fire Apprenticeship Program with U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, I was a biological technician for Pea Island and Alligator River National Wildlife Refuges in North Carolina. During my time there, I was also a collateral duty firefighter, mostly helping with prescribed fires. A collateral duty firefighter is someone who holds another primary role, in my case biological technician, but also fulfills duties related to firefighting as a secondary or collateral responsibility. In February of 2022, I applied for a Wildland Fire Apprenticeship position and got it! Now, I’m almost through the program and will then move into a permanent wildland fire position with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.

Q: What detail assignments have you filled as part of the apprentice program?

Being a part of the Wildland Fire Apprenticeship Program has allowed me to travel all over and learn about the different types of wildland fire crews and what it takes to manage wildland fire and build relationships with other wildland fire personnel. So far, I’ve been able to experience what it’s like to be on a hand crew, an engine crew, and even completed some helicopter assignments. I’ve also traveled to Minnesota, South Dakota, and Nebraska to assist with prescribed burning assignments. Over the next few months, I will experience working in a dispatch center.

Q: Where did you grow up?

I grew up in South Florida. I went to school in Orlando and attended collage at the University of Central Florida where she studied Environmental Science/Biology. A year after I graduated, I moved up to North Carolina for the seasonal biological technician position.

Q: Recently, you joined a National Interagency Prescribed Fire Training Center

Our burn module was based in Titusville, Florida, for the first part of our assignment, where we joined an interagency burn with Florida State Parks. We completed prescribed burns at Faver-Dykes, Dunns Creek, Lake Louisa, Bulow Creek, and Kissimmee Prairie Preserve State Parks! After we completed those burns, we traveled to the Florida panhandle where we burned with the Florida Forest Service at Tate’s Hell State Forest.

Q: Can you tell me more about being a part of a burn module and what exactly it entails?

The National Interagency Prescribed Fire Training Center brings together individuals from all over the country from different fire backgrounds and experience levels to train them on specific prescribed fire skills. Essentially, any individual who wants to join has to apply for a specific training position – RXB2 (Prescribed Fire Burn Boss), FIRB (Firing Boss), ENGB (Engine Boss), FEMO (Fire Effects Monitor), FFT1 (Firefighter Type 1). Once selected, that person is placed into that role in a new environment to gain those skills. I absolutely love the National Interagency Prescribed Fire Training Center because it promotes learning, training, and understanding the objectives of each area.

Q: Can you tell me about your overall experience on the module with the training center? What did you learn?

My experience with my module was awesome. Each person brought a different perspective, and I had a great time getting to know and work with each person during my time there. It was great getting to burn in Florida and experiencing the different landscapes and objectives with each state park and forest. I was pushed out of my comfort zone multiple times, and I truly appreciate that opportunity. My group and field coordinators created a fantastic learning environment that allowed me to fully work through each situation.

Many times, when you’re on a prescribed fire, there can be an overwhelming goal to complete acres. The National Interagency Prescribed Fire Training Center helps shift that focus more on the objectives of the burn and what firing techniques are optimal for those objectives. Being a part of a module provided me the latitude to implement different techniques so I could see firsthand what worked, what didn’t work, and when to adjust tactics.

Prestigious Scholarship Program Allows Student to Pursue His Educational Journey

The Fowler Scholars Program provided support for first-generation college student, Brian Martinez, to complete his degree program and to plan for his future.

When asked who or what inspired him the most, Brian Martinez had a ready response.

“My family inspires me the most,” said Martinez, now in his third year at the Fowler College of Business at San Diego State University. “My parents are immigrants and they both work hard as restaurant cooks. They sacrificed a lot to make sure my siblings and I had a good education.”

The promise of a good education and staying close to home is what brought Martinez to SDSU where he chose to major in finance. “When I looked over SDSU’s course curriculum, I saw classes in topics that interested me such as investment and portfolio management,” he said. “Finance also has one of the most diverse ranges of career opportunities. I found that to be extremely attractive since I wanted a degree that granted me a good deal of career flexibility.”

The financial burden of pursuing a college degree weighs heavily on many students and their families.  For Martinez, his good grades, tenacity and focus on meeting educational goals played a major role in helping to overcome this challenge. He applied to every scholarship where he was eligible and it paid off in a big way.

The Best Way to Pay for College “Scholarships are the best way to finance a college education,” said Martinez, who was invited to be part of the Fowler Scholars Program prior to his freshmen year. “The Fowler Scholars Program comes with a scholarship that had a huge impact on me and my family. I remember when I got word that I had been accepted into the program — I immediately called my parents to let them know that I won a scholarship and they did not have to worry about how they would pay for my education.”

The Fowler Scholars Program was created to build ethical business leaders through weekly group meetings, mentorships, student consulting projects and other experiences that offer students real-world business skills. The program also offers class credit and financial resources to the 18 students who are accepted into this prestigious program.

“The moment I was able to share that news with my parents brings me great joy to this day and I have no doubt that scholarship has played a great role in my success as a student,” said Martinez who will embark on an eight-week internship with Stifel Financial Corporation in New York City for the second summer in a row.

Finance and Investment Society In addition to his involvement with the Fowler Scholars program and his internships, Martinez was the president of SDSU’s Finance and Investment Society (FIS) during his sophomore year.  FIS is a campus organization that offers students opportunities to learn and participate in various financial investment scenarios. Kamal Haddad is a finance professor within the Fowler College of Business, who also serves as the faculty advisor for FIS.

Haddad got to know Martinez through FIS and was impressed with his sense of motivation. “Brian is disciplined and success-oriented and he learned much of his investment and equity knowledge through his own research,” said Haddad. “As president of FIS, he was a superb leader and team player. He also greatly increased membership in the organization.”

Once he completes his internship with Stifel, Martinez will return to SDSU to complete his senior year.  He plans to graduate in the spring of 2025 and has set his sights on a career in investment banking shortly thereafter. “Once I gain a lot of experience and build a track record of being a strong performer, I would eventually like to launch my own investment fund,” said Martinez. And though he might move from San Diego to launch his career, family is still a top priority for him. “As the oldest of four children, I’d also like to help my parents out and I would love to help my siblings pay for their college educations to help them get into the workforce.”
