Top 5 airlines flying to Manila

The flight crews were extremely professional, helpful, and courteous. Departure and arrival times were accurate. No delay. I will use K airline again. Thanks

Not very comfortable seated in the back plane due to turbulence

Everything about Korean air is great, hands down! Will always prefer this airline from other carriers.

Crew was ok, but some passengers were a bit rude. Again, all outlets were not working, only the really slow charging usb plug on the entertainment system. Entertainment system was also bugged, some features just crash, the touch screen wasn't working and when trying to watch a movie the onscreen display kept flashing off and on making it very difficult to watch.

Great crew, decent food Charging plugs were broken on both seats next to me. Only the USB port was available, and that charges, very, very slowly. Seat was also broken, it would not lock into position when reclining.

Korean Air had great service and the Bibimbap dish was the best airplane food I’ve ever had. It was a long flight so in between the two meals they served customers could get Shin ramen. The flight attendants let my children use a pair of nice headphones for the flight and had earbuds and slippers for all the adults. The flight was long but the time passed by relatively quickly because they have many great shows in their entertainment TV. I watched the BTS Love Yourself and Speak Yourself concerts 💜

not too bad but not too great either. Service on all airlines declined ever since covid. Your Delta Stewardess are not that friendly at all. :-(

I flew Asiana Air not Korean Air which was my original flight. So, I have no say about Korean Airlines right now. I hope you guys will not make any changes of my flight on Feb 15th. I want to fly Korean Air on Feb 15th. and make sure it is the same flightr njumber for my husband also and do not make any changes on either flights. thank you for reading my letter.

You did not put me on a Korean Air flight! so I do not have nothing to say

My flight was diverted to Atlanta and I was not given enough time. I paid my travel on April 23, 2023. It was originally Delta from Norfolk to NY, then Korean Air from NY all the way Philippines which is my final stop. Instead from Atlanta to Korea I flew Delta which is okay. Then Korea to Philippines, I flew Asiana Airlines. What I did not like, Ieagle did not sent me an email that my flight was change and so when I went to check in Wednesday the 10th, at 4:30 a.m they told me my flight was delayed at 6;00 p.m and diverted in Atlanta and I am flying Asiana from Korea to Philippines. I do not appreciate that Kayak or Ieagle chenge our flights 5 times and then last minute change again during my day of flight. I hope that you will not make any changes of my flight o Feb 15th because it has to be the same flight with my husband. That is the reason why we made the arrangements early on.

Flying with ANA is always a breeze. Seats are very comfortable.

Flight was on time and the crew was as expected, friendly and respectful. Food could’ve been better though.

First I will say this was really NOT an ANA flight. ANA used a UNITED jet to perform this flight. I specifically booked with ANA because I did NOT WANT TO FLY UNITED FOR INTERNATIONAL FLIGHTS. So to spend $1800.00 and then discover after booking that it was going to be handled by United was very disappointing. I will be more careful next time when I book. The interior was very cramped in economy class; the dinner meal was terrible and also had extremely small portions for an international flight - the bread roll was ice cold and stale - that salad was very wilted; I’ve never had a “snack” that was so salty that it was difficult to eat; the breakfast “waffle” was practically unrecognizable. Really horrible meals for a very expensive international flight. Bathroom floor was also pretty dirty. I’m hoping my return flight is a real ANA airplane that is cleaned and serviced by ANA personnel with ANA meals. I will never book with ANA again if they continue to use UNITED airline jets. Yuck!!!🤢

Ticket was purchased as a United Airlines flight (operated by All Nippon) like what does that even mean? Makes for a VERY confusing flight experience. For instance, what do I look for a United drop off signage and ticket counter or ANA? No explanation anywhere to be found. I also felt a little bit scammed by the obsurdely restrictive seat selection provided. Only middle seats available!! Are you kidding me!! On 6hr + 10hr flights you're forcing me into the middle seat without telling me before I purchased the ticket?? This should be illegal. And to top it off, on the Tokyo LA leg there were quite a few empty seats including window seats! I must also say, the food was a dissappointing as well for my taste, fish with rice ( mostly plain white rice) or a vegetable medly for the breakfast meal? Should be at least 4 choices and at least 1 with eggs. Outside of these issues flight was otherwise ok.

Ground and flight crew were all courteous, extremely helpful and professional. Overall, process is really organized, from boarding to disembarkation.

This is a very long flight and the first time I have flown on a Japanese airline. I was very impressed with the staff. They worked hard and offered food and drink regularly. Plane was very well cared for. The let room was good . Food was ok but better than other airlines.

I wish the serve should leach and drink. Maybe because only 2hr

It was ok I thought because my flight was 1pm i was expecting to have lunch but it didn’t and after 7 hr finally dinner time was only chicken sandwich and next breakfast was an hour before plane land in Tokyo. so I should bring some food with me. Japanese flight attend was nice but the other was chewing gum and how she ask and respond to customers was not professional I felt. Maybe because Japan flight attendant is highly train and everyone looked very dress and professional so I was kind disappointed. I like that the bathroom was very clean .

Seat was roomy enough . The Asian selection for a meal was good . The tortellini was not very good. Service was excellent. O

It was very good. Lots of room with superior food and service. I will not hesitate to fly ANA in the future!

Flight attendants rude, they disappear for almost 3 hours not doing rounds to see what people needed. The laboratories were full of empty water cups, because they never come back to collect them.

The flight attendant, where kind of rude, there where hiding for almost 3 hours, without doing rounds to see if people needed water or pickup the water cups, the toilets were full of water cups, because they never come back to pick them up.

Flew on an Airbus 350-900. Excellent aircraft properly cleaned and serviced. Flight crew was excellent plane departed and arrived on time. The A350 has excellent air circulation far better than the 777. I would recommend Asiana to anyone looking to fly in a clean comfortable environment. This is my second round trip flight from New York to Bangkok via Asiana and I will book Asiana again!

Amazing service and fabulous syaff. Loved the jumbo jet too, comfortable.

The entertainment screens are dated and needs to be changed to new screens. Then when we got home, I found out 2 of our luggage’s were damaged (huge) and some items stolen.

I could not choose my seat prior to check in

I had the most wonderful experience from CEB bag drop through deplaning. The staff, the aircraft, food, and cabin crew were all amazing. I want to give a kudos to Marky from Mactan Cebu's Asiana airport staff for his exceptional customer service and assistance.

JetBlue's check-in was great, but there was an in-flight attendant who was very rude and unkind. I didn't realize that the bathrooms were already locked 30 mins prior to landing and needed to use the restroom. Instead of politely asking me to return, she rudely told me, 'NO, bathrooms are locked! Go back to your seat!' The JetBlue flight was more than an hour delay, which made me almost miss my connecting flight with Asiana. I understand the reasoning, but the action they took to get a hold of maintenance was time consuming. It took them more than 30 mins to get a hold of maintenance and for maintenance to get started. The Asiana flight and crew were wonderful, in general. They waited for us who were delayed from the previous flight before they took off and were very kind to take my checked baggage's info. Seats were a little uncomfortable for such long flight, but service and flight attendants were great! However, my 3 checked baggages are missing! They're lost somewhere in the transition. I'm writing this review 3 days after my arrival to the Philippines, and my 3 checked baggages, where my wedding dress is, are all still missing! I and the CEB airport crew have sent multiple emails to both JetBlue and Asiana, and neither has responded to any of our emails. Although, I was able to get in contact with JetBlue's Interline Department who confirmed that the bags were turned over to Asiana without confirmation details.

The full flat bed was not that comfortable, hard and lumpy., too much space wasted with those bulky walls and divisions instead of making the bed 3-4 inches wider. The compartment where you put your feet is like a shoebox, poor design. Toilets of A350 are just too small, sink is too small

The crew was amazing and really nice. The OS on the entertainment system could use an update, though. It felt old and outdated but had anything you'd need to keep busy. I usually never use it anyways, but that did stand out.

Fast and efficient boarding. Flight was on time. Service was very good for our long flight. First time flying with this airline and I would highly recommend.

Eva Air's Business Class is pretty decent. With the given price, I think that the food can be better.

Pleasant, comfortable, and entertaining. All told, ZERO issues with it. And sadly, so far the flight was WAY more comfortable than the hellhole that is "Lambug Beach Resort" at Badian Beach!

It was a pleasant fly with Eva Air from NYC to Taipei. The crew were friendly and the food was exceeded my expectation.

Eva air is a good airline. The seats on the way to Taipei could have certainly been more comfortable, but all in all it was a pretty good experience.

Overall the flight was what might be expected for a long haul flight to Asia in economy class. The cabin crew was attentive and the food was good. Boarding was fairly fast and easy. The one thing I found frustrating was the EVA app. It is terrible. Trying to do anything on it was almost impossible.

EVA would not help with ticket issue since they were purchased through a travel agency. Even though it was EVA ticket stock. Travel agency Budget Air didn't reissue ticket after airline change which I didn’t learn until trying to checkin on Christmas Day and there was no contact number for the agency to help. I will never use Budget Air to purchase flight again and disappointed in EVA’s refusal to help. Thankfully just under 12 hrs before departure someone from the agency was available to reissue tickets. I was starting to think we would not be flying and the stress trying to resolve was completely unacceptable.

seamless check in/ friendly staff, food is good, always love flying Eva Air

Very uncomfortable and crowded seats in economy. Flight attendant refused request to move to nearby unused seat with more legroom because “It was more money for that seat”. It was also near impossible to reach airline directly by phone. Waits upwards of an hour and not very helpful customer service representatives after long wait. Cannot recommend this airline.

My experience with Eva sir was good except the long walk in LA Lex, that was inconvenient for my age,

More updated movies & Chinese movies. The food sometimes overcooked. Prefer to have more neat snacks in between than just choose from the menu. Please change the menu every now and then. This is my second time flying within one year and the menu didn’t change at all!

Food is lagging. Very poor choice. Like vending machine fast food.

Please change the menu more often. The beef is not tender, more choice in ice cream flavor. Dessert is not good too.

The Experience was fantastic, it's a quick flight so no entertainment or food. Just a refreshment

First of all I had dozed off. And when I woke up, my food was on a tray without telling me the food was there or asking me if I wanted something to drink. They never came back to ask me if I wanted anything to drink and I tried to stop them several times. I personally have a problem swallowing food without something to drink with it. so therefore I could not eat., second thing for the entertainment. There was no place to plug the headset in because the tip had been broken off into the monitor to where you couldn’t even watch a movie or hear any music that was annoying .

Again I paid for an upgrade on my credit card didn’t get it need a refund. . American I not good at gettin in contact for refunds.

I didn’t like the check in process I had to check in at the counter took too much time . Didn’t give the upgrade my seat .

l enjoyed the variety of good and drink choices. The flight attendants were very quick and efficient to our needs.

Truly impressive service in the air. After the main meal, they have a delicious a la carte menu that you can order anytime until 1.5 hrs prior to landing. Flight crew were so pleasant and very efficient. Wish I could fly JAL more often!

Attentive crew, great service with regular rounds of drinks and trash collecting. Only complaint is the food, which was mediocre.

Job Very Well Done: Philippine Airlines (A350-900) in Business Class From Manila to JFK

Alberto Riva

[tpg_rating tpg-rating-score="83" ground-experience="5" cabin-seat="21" amens-ife="12" food-bev="22" service="23" pros="Very good seat, service and food; free and stable Wi-Fi; a brand-new Airbus A350." cons="The dated Manila lounge and airport do not match the onboard experience; the airline has no US points and miles partners." /]

Not long ago, an 8,519-mile nonstop flight would have easily taken the crown for longest in the world. These days, the Philippine Airlines service from Manila to New York merely ranks as the eighth-longest nonstop. No. 1 is the unbeatable (with current technology) Singapore-Newark monster flown by Singapore Airlines on the ultralong-range version of the Airbus A350 . But the Manila service, introduced in October, still earns the respectable title of longest flight into JFK. It's flown by a standard A350 sporting a business class with all seats offering aisle access — the latest-model long-haul jet, with the latest-model biz seat. That was enough for us at TPG to want to try it out, so we booked it as the return leg of a trip to Southeast Asia from New York in early December, from Jakarta, Indonesia, to New York via Manila.

Philippine Airlines' Mabuhay Miles loyalty program does not have US transfer partners, nor does it have airline partners in the US — it only partners with All Nippon Airways and Etihad. Our only option was paying with cash. We put the $2,773.83 fare on the Platinum Card ® from American Express , earning 5x points on airfare booked directly with the airline for a total haul of 13,870 Membership Rewards points, worth $277 at current TPG valuations .

I opened a Mabuhay account for this flight, and I'm now at 15,357 miles. With 50,000 more, I'll have enough for a one-way award ticket in the same class and on the same flight, per the Mabuhay award chart .

After arriving the previous day on a gleaming Airbus A321neo from Jakarta and overnighting in Manila, I was well-disposed toward the flag carrier of the Philippines. The A321 was a brand-new machine, just four months old, sporting lie-flat beds in business class — the same seat and 2-2 layout American Airlines flies on its coast-to-coast A321s in biz. On the three-hour hop from Indonesia, I had been treated and fed very nicely.

Unfortunately, Terminal 2 at Manila's Ninoy Aquino International Airport (MNL) was a letdown from that, and not a good introduction for the ultralong-haul flight to follow.

I arrived before 6pm for a 9pm departure. Check-in lines were uncrowded but slow. Narrow, dim spaces, with storefronts and gates close together, and chipped white and gray tiles on the floor did not create a pleasant feeling.

class travel manila

To my surprise, my boarding pass carried the dreaded SSSS code. This was my first experience with Special Secondary Security Screening, an extra inspection reserved for people flagged as suspicious. I may have been singled out because I was on a one-way ticket, despite being enrolled in the US Trusted Traveler Program.

class travel manila

That SSSS turned out to be just a mild annoyance. At the first security screening, after check-in, the agents all but ignored it. At the second, positioned at the entrance to the gates for US-bound flights, I got pulled aside for a few questions — how long I'd stayed in the country, where I came from, the purpose of my visit — and an extra close look at my bags. Total time lost: maybe four minutes. (Our readers have had varying experiences with it.)

Before that, an hour spent in the Mabuhay lounge did not measure up to the ambitions of the airline that ran it. Essentially windowless, it smelled of humidity and stuffy air. The tiny bathroom was not adequate for the capacity of the lounge. Air conditioning was either too low or, if you were sitting near the vents, freezing. Many pieces of furniture were scuffed or dented.

class travel manila

The buffet and drinks station were firmly in the middling, at best, to low end of the quality spectrum.

class travel manila

At least it was easy to plug in and charge devices. Outlets were plentiful, and no adapter is required in the Philippines for US electronics. The Wi-Fi was really fast, with a blazing 80 Mbps download speed but an unfortunate tendency to disconnect.

class travel manila

A reviewer on the Loungebuddy app called this the worst lounge they'd ever seen. It was not the worst I had ever seen, not by a long shot, but if Philippine Airlines wants to make the ground experience as top-notch as its new Airbus jets, it needs to fix this.

At the gate, after going through my anticlimactic SSSS screening, I found a lot of unoccupied seats — the flight turned out to be near-empty — and poor signage, leaving it a bit unclear where the JFK passengers would board from. Flight PR126 to New York and the airline's other nonstops to Los Angeles and San Francisco departed from the same cluster of gates at roughly the same time, leading to some confusion. Boarding began 25 minutes after the scheduled 8:15pm time. Seven passengers in wheelchairs, an unusually high number, were accompanied aboard ahead of everybody else.

class travel manila

At 8:40pm, I walked onto a shiny A350-900, welcomed by the cheeky raccoon mask around the cockpit windows and unmistakable sloping nose of all A350s. Its Filipino registration, RP-C-3501 , identified it as the first to be delivered of the six A350s ordered by the airline. It had left the factory in Toulouse only in June — just six months old.

Business class on the Philippine Airlines A350 is all in a single cabin of 30 seats, with four per row laid out 1-2-1, and it makes an excellent first impression — elegant and understated, if maybe a touch cold. Its Thompson Vantage XL seats are the same we have flown, and liked very much, on airlines including Scandinavian Airlines and Rwandair .

class travel manila

Note the car-style, over-the-shoulder seat belt. Also note that the window seats come in two variants. One has a huge armrest between seat and aisle, enhancing privacy; you'll find it in odd-numbered rows. The other has the armrest on the window side, leaving you more exposed to aisle traffic and making it harder to see out the window. So, if you're traveling solo, try to select seats A and K in rows 3, 5 and 7. Below is my seat, 7A, which made for a delightfully cozy little fort over the 15 hours I would spend in it.

class travel manila

Window seats in even-numbered rows aren't bad at all, but you're just an inch away from the aisle. Those are seats A and K in rows 2, 4, 6 and 8.

class travel manila

Pick the center blocks of two, seats D and G, if you're traveling as a couple. D has the armrest on the aisle side and G is the more exposed one.

Regardless of where it is, every seat turns into a 78-inch flat bed. In the up position, there's all the legroom you want.

class travel manila

The Vantage XL is great for open storage of small objects; the ledge to my right held phone, chargers, headphones, books and assorted knick-knacks. There's no closed storage, though, and no place to put larger objects like a laptop.

Everything I needed to charge my devices and control the seat and monitor was clustered to my right: wired remote, headphone outlet with USB powered port, universal power outlet, an orientable reading light with three settings and a very intuitive control pad for the seat, mood light and massage function. The mood light is a great touch, illuminating the storage area and footwell; no more frantic feeling around on the floor for dropped objects. Turn on the mood light and voilà, you can see easily where your phone or wallet fell. As for the massage function, it's really more of a gimmick. Just get up and stretch instead — the 1-2-1 layout makes it easy. You're not disturbing anyone.

class travel manila

A subset of the seat controls is replicated on the armrest and easily accessible from the flat-bed position. Next to it, a button extends smoothly a tray table big enough to work on a laptop comfortably.

class travel manila

Literature is stored in two pouches, one at floor level and another by the monitor.

class travel manila

Short of a mini-suite with a door like the new Delta One , Qatar's award-winning QSuites or the single seat on JetBlue's Mint , this is about as private as it gets in business class.

class travel manila

Philippine Airlines also opted for no overhead luggage bins over the center row in biz class, which creates a feeling of spaciousness.

class travel manila

On this flight, there were Filipino newspapers and the international edition of the New York Times in a pouch at the back of the biz cabin.

class travel manila

Philippine Airlines configures its A350s with 295 seats spread across business, premium economy and coach -- a relatively low number. Besides the 30 flat beds in biz, there are 24 seats in premium economy in three rows of 2-4-2 and 241 in coach arranged in the 3-3-3 layout of most A350s.

By my count during the flight, we had an extremely light passenger load with 14 people in biz, six in premium and a few dozen in coach. It might have been because of the day of the week. According to a flight attendant, the newly-introduced Wednesday service — the flight operates five days a week now and will go daily from March 31, 2019 — is not very crowded. Fantastic for us passengers, not great for the airline. In coach, pretty much everybody had their own row.

class travel manila

At 9pm, with boarding complete, Captain Ike Bernad introduced himself over the PA and welcomed us aboard, announcing that our flight time would be an exceptionally short 14 hours, 30 minutes. This was followed by a personal introduction from the flight attendant who would take care of me throughout the flight. "Welcome aboard, Mr Riva," she said, "my name is Sarah. Please have at look at the menu. You can order your meals anytime you want." Philippine Airlines doesn't offer pre-selection of your meal, à la Singapore Airlines or EVA Air, but my flight did feature dine on demand, as found on far more celebrated carriers: I could eat whenever I wanted, and get my food in 10 to 20 minutes from ordering.

The purser then introduced herself over the loudspeakers as Josie, apologized for the delay due to a late arrival of the incoming aircraft, and explained we had two captains and two first officers on board. Standard practice on flights this long, which go far beyond the maximum hours allowable on duty for a flight crew: two people rest in the crew bunks, while the other two fly the plane. Philippine Airlines was doing things right from a customer-facing standpoint. Within the first few minutes on board, its front-line personnel had established a personal connection and kept passengers well informed.

The safety video, a beautifully produced affair showcasing tourist destinations in the Philippines, reinforced the positive impression. So did a visit at my seat by Josie, who introduced herself again, but in person.

class travel manila

We took off at 9:40pm, with downtown Manila offering a glorious spectacle out of my two windows. I could see, but barely hear, one of the two Rolls Royce Trent XWB engines. The A350 is an exceptionally quiet jet .

class travel manila

The quiet cabin was a huge plus when sleeping. With the seat in lie-flat position, a cozy but not heavy blanket and an extra pillow taken from an unoccupied seat, I had no trouble getting a total of about six hours of real, restful sleep. Over-the-shoulder seat belts aren't very comfortable when lying down. There was an option to unfasten the over-the-shoulder part and keep only the lap belt fastened during cruise, though. (Keeping your seat belt unfastened altgoether is absolutely not an option, though. Just like the captain always does, we recommend keeping your seat belt fastened at all times when seated — turbulence can hit unexpectedly.)

class travel manila

Some passengers complain that the footwell is too narrow on Vantage XL seats. If you're the kind of sleeper who tosses and turns, you will probably agree.

class travel manila

The biz-class cabin has two reserved bathrooms at the front, with dark countertops to distinguish them from the other onboard lavatories. They offered mouthwash, hand lotion and cologne with the airline's own branding and hand soap from L'Occitane.

Service began on the ground, 15 minutes after I was seated, with a flute of Charles Heidsieck Brut Reserve , a mid-range ($60 at US retail) champagne whose complex, elegant texture and wonderfully nutty finish helped, together with the crew's warm welcome, to put me in a good mood.

class travel manila

While taxiing, Sarah came to take my meal orders — dinner, midflight meal, and breakfast, although the latter would be served at dinnertime in New York on the same day of our departure. (Thanks to the International Date Line we landed 90 minutes after taking off, in local times.)

class travel manila

Created in cooperation with the New York restaurant Wolfgang's Steakhouse, the menu offered a balanced mix of Filipino, Asian and Western dishes. I went mostly with the Filipino options, starting with pork sisig, a dish Anthony Bourdain predicted would be the next international sensation. To start with, I ordered an onion soup from the Wolfgang's Steakhouse side of the menu, plus a glass of Hardy's Stamp 2016 Australian riesling / Gewürztraminer blend to go with dinner. For the midflight snack, I ordered a more generically Asian dish, a prawn cake sate with nasi goreng , an Indonesian stir-fried rice; I would then finish up with another Filipino dish, beef tapa — pan-fried marinated slices of Black Angus meat.

The wine list included three whites and three reds besides the champagne. The whites were a chardonnay from California, my riesling and a sauvignon blanc / sémillon / muscadelle blend from France. The reds were an Australian shiraz / cabernet sauvignon and two Bordeaux reds, one a merlot / cabernet sauvignon / malbec blend and the other a merlot / cabernet sauvignon / cabernet franc. Overall a pretty classic wine list with no surprises.

class travel manila

Just 20 minutes after takeoff, we were served an amuse-bouche of adobo flakes and tomato mousse. Things were off to a very good start.

class travel manila

The onion soup was a bit weak, but the pork sisig that followed was a knockout. Accompanied with olive-and-rosemary bread and the riesling, it was an international delight: a classic Filipino dish, with a very Mediterranean bread and an Australian wine made from typically German and Austrian grapes. The presentation was simple and unobtrusive, with a napkin ring whose decoration matched the menu's.

class travel manila

The cheese platter I ordered for dessert (ice cream and cheesecake were also available) included two Filipino cheeses: a mild kesong puti with herbs and a Mango Sublime, or goat cheese with mango bits — an interesting, not unpleasant experiment. A cup of green tea completed the meal, before going to sleep.

class travel manila

I woke at 3am Manila time, after three and a half hours of great flat-bed sleep. A check of the flight data told me we were in the middle of the Pacific and being pushed by jetstream winds from the west to a remarkable speed of 731 mph. According to the flight-tracking site Flightaware, we reached 761 mph, close to the highest ground speed ever reported for an A350.

class travel manila

As we raced eastbound to meet the sun, it was broad daylight already when I looked outside at 3:45am Manila time.

class travel manila

When Sarah saw I was awake, she came to inquire if I wanted anything. After bringing me a green tea, she reminded me that if I was hungry I could ask for my second meal to be brought at any time. I could also have snacks and water from the impromptu snack bar set up in the galley between business and premium economy. After the tea, I asked for the prawns.

class travel manila

25 minutes later the prawns came, without tablecloth but on a elegant black tray. It took a little longer than I had been told, but I didn't really care: on an ultra-long-haul flight, time can become a weird entity. We'd been in the air six hours already, and had more than eight to go.

class travel manila

The prawns were outstanding. They came in perfect little balls, pan-fried and not heavy at all, bursting with taste that would have been worthy of praise at a good restaurant on the ground. Very flavorful cantaloupe slices, watermelon and a bar of mango chocolate completed the tray. Even after detracting a few points for slightly sticky rice and the lack of discernible mango taste in the chocolate, this meal was an absolute winner.

One hour later, with the cabin still dark and window shades down, Sarah brought out a basket of snacks. I got a tablet of Filipino dark, coffee-flavored chocolate. The airline was definitely making an effort to showcase its homeland's products.

class travel manila

The snack basket came back about four hours out of JFK, above the Canadian Rockies, when Sarah noticed I was up again and texting on my phone after another couple hours of sleep. I skipped it, knowing I could have a real meal soon. Meanwhile, Josie took it upon herself to walk down the aisle checking on her passengers, and asking me how I was doing and if I wanted something to drink. Not all pursers are this engaged.

With two hours to go, 10:15am on Thursday Manila time and Wednesday evening over the Midwest, she took to the PA to wish us a good morning and tell us that the final meal would be served shortly and that we may want to freshen up for arrival. As the cabin lights came on, Sarah brought me a hot towel. "How was your sleep?" she asked, before bringing me my choice of cranberry or orange juice. With business class half empty, the cabin crew had time to linger. One row ahead, she knelt by a seat to play with a boy of about three, who clearly loved the attention.

class travel manila

The coffee was better than the airline average, and so was the way it was served.

class travel manila

To keep the Filipino food theme going, I said yes to the offer of two unusual appetizers: tuyo , a salted dried herring, and bangus, known in English as milkfish. The tuyo had a really strong taste — Philippine Airlines was clearly unafraid of giving its passengers real Filipino street food. The bangus was a melt-in-your-mouth delight. If there was a concept uniting the various meals on this flight, it was umami — the "fifth flavor" besides sweet, salty, sour and bitter. The beef tapa, preceded by a beautifully presented fruit plate, was another great example of it, with a spicy vinegar dip that provided a sharp high note.

class travel manila

At 12:13pm Manila time, we made the last turn for final approach to JFK's runway 31R , dropped the landing gear and touched down three minutes later. It was 11:16pm in New York, and we had spent 14 hours and 36 minutes in the air.

Amenity kits from L'Occitane were distributed 10 minutes after takeoff, with slippers. The kit contained the bare essentials for a long flight: toothpaste and toothbrush, comb, eau de toilette, body lotion, socks and eye mask.

class travel manila

It was a bit bare-bones, and on a flight that can last well over 15 hours, pajamas to change into would have been wonderful. (Among the other smaller Asian carriers that fly to the US, EVA Air provides them , for example.)

The inflight entertainment featured a big, bright 18.5 inch screen easily controlled by touch or remote. The airline promises over 300 hours of entertainment on its IFE, including 132 movies handily divided into various categories. Children's movies were grouped with an adorably clever pun, "Little PALs", a reference to the airline's three-letter ICAO code , which is also used as a common abbreviation in the airline's communication with the public. James Bond fans would have been delighted by the no fewer than 25 Bond movies featured — by my count, all but one of the 007 movies ever made.

The movie and tv show sections offered filtering for languages, either Tagalog or English, a feature that should be in every IFE. Captured by the plenty of Bond movies, I ignored the tv show section and watched 007 flicks, plus a documentary on Filipino nature, when I was not on the Wi-Fi.

Overall, the IFE wasn't at the top of the field when it came to content choices, but the beautiful screen made up for it somewhat. The map didn't allow pinch-and-zoom, a minor drawback, but had plenty of views to choose from — yet I could not find the outside cameras that the A350 is known for.

class travel manila

The highlight was free Wi-Fi throughout the flight. It may not have been very fast — I was unable to load a Speedtest — but it was stable, and allowed me to text and use Twitter, Instagram, Facebook and Gmail with nary a hiccup all the way from the Western Pacific Ocean to New Jersey. PAL provided headphones offering a serviceable, not outstanding, sound quality.

class travel manila

The IFE allows pairing with remote devices via an app, so you can watch a movie on the main display, for example, and have the inflight map up on your phone. I didn't test it; my phone was kept plenty busy by the rock-solid Wi-Fi. Another cool touch is a display on the remote showing the remaining flight time.

As I exited the plane in New York, flight attendants bid me a smiling goodbye, using my name. The next day, Philippine Airlines closed out its interaction with me by emailing a detailed survey — it greeted me with a Mabuhay! , the Tagalog expression that I'd heard used all through the flight to welcome passengers — which even invited me to indicate the names of any employees I might want to single out for particulary good service.

Flight-tracking site Flightaware showed we had flown 9,253 miles, far more than the shortest possible routing at 8,500, in order to follow the jetstream and save fuel thanks to the push by the wind. Singapore Airlines' nonstop to New York is 9,500 miles. We had come close to equaling the longest scheduled flight in the world.

Screen cap from Flightaware

[flight_stats ticket-class="first" review-stat-section="Service" tpg-rating="23" tpg-rating-max="25" live-tv="0" tailcam="0" headphones="0" comp-alcohol="0" extra-pillows="No" turndown-service="No" /]

Simply put, Philippine Airlines greatly exceeded my expectations. This was due in large part to the exceptional attitude of the crew, with a smiling, solicitous yet never intrusive approach. From the moment I stepped aboard to when I walked out, I was treated exemplarily, by people who were visibly proud of their company and happy to be doing their jobs. The PAL employees I interacted with on the plane were calmly professional. So was the crew of my previous Philippine Airlines flight, from Jakarta to Manila. On the ground, interactions with lounge and check-in personnel were a bit more perfunctory, but overall service still qualified as outstanding.

Overall Impression

A flight of almost 15 hours went by very, very pleasantly. With the latest products from Boeing and Airbus, great premium seats plus cabin crews and food that do justice to the Filipino tradition of hospitality, PAL could and should be a contender despite its small fleet size.

Especially at prices like these — $2,700 for flat-bed seats and great service all the way from Indonesia to New York is relatively cheap — I would love to recommend the airline, but the lack of mileage-earning options with a major US or European partner is daunting. To play with the big boys, Philippine Airlines needs to do two things: It must improve the ground experience at its home base, and join an airline alliance or at least broaden the scope of its mileage partnerships. That would make it an appealing choice for points and miles travelers looking to get to Southeast Asia from the US with a seat and service worthy of a big points redemption.

Review: United Airlines 777-300ER Business Class San Francisco – Manila

a plane parked at an airport

I tend to avoid inaugural flights because you often get special service and special meals onboard, making the review somewhat unique, but much less valuable. Rather than fly United Airlines’ new San Francisco – Manila route on its first day of operation, I flew it on the second day in Polaris business class on the 777-300ER. That provided a better idea of what you can expect on this route and I will say at the outset that it was a very restful flight.

In This Post:

United Airlines 777-300ER Business Class Review (SFO-MNL)

I booked a one-way ticket from Burbank to Manila for $1338.73 in premium economy, then used 20 Plus Points to upgrade to business class (a business class ticket was only about $2300 one-way, which wasn’t bad at all).

After a smooth flight up from Burbank and a hearty dinner in the Polaris Lounge , I walked over to the gate area for boarding, where I found it quite crowded.

United Airlines 191 San Francisco (SFO) – Manila (MNL) Sunday, October 29, 2023 Depart: 12:35 AM Arrive: 06:50 AM+1 Duration: 15hr, 15min Distance: 6,987 miles Aircraft:  Boeing 777-300ER Seat: 7L (Polaris Business Class)

Stepping onboard, I was very (and I mean very) warmly greeted by the Filipino-American purser, who took a very hands-on approach in interacting with passengers.

The 777-300ER is United’s largest widebody aircraft, with 60 seats in Polaris Business Class. Polaris is divided into two cabins, with rows 1-8 in the forward cabin and 9-16 in the rear cabin. Seats are arranged in a 1-2-1 configuration and odd-numbered A and L seats are “true” window seats and offer the most privacy. These seats are custom for United, but modeled on the Safran Optima platform.

an airplane with seats and a person in the back

If traveling with someone close, you might want to choose the odd-numbered D and G seats. These so-called “honeymoon” seats make it very easy to chat with one another. Every seat, however, has direct aisle access and if you find yourself stuck in one of these honeymoon seats while traveling solo there is a privacy divider that can be raised.

an airplane with seats and a few windows

The seats are 20 inches wide and convert into a lie-flat bed that is 78 inches long (6 foot, 6 inches). I always prefer bulkhead seats (row 1 and 9) when available due to the wider footwells, but they were all occupied when I booked just two days before departure.

Each seat has a universal A/C outlet and a USB-A charger. The mood lighting was on for most of the flight and I do not find it a disturbance to sleeping.

a tv in an airplane

Sitting at each seat was a Saks Fifth Avenue branded bedding bundle in a zippered back that included a duvet, cooling foam gel pillow, and larger pillow. There was also a limited-edition day blanket featuring a pattern by fashion designer Claude Kameni and also made from 100% recycled plastic.

a pillow on a plane

The larger pillow had a stain on it, but I got it swapped out.

a close up of a white fabric with a stain on it

Mattress pads, slippers, and pajamas were available on request and I did change into pajamas shortly after takeoff. With excellent bedding and cool cabin, I slept very well during the flight.

a bed in a plane

We ended up departing 48 minutes late at 1:23 am due to a slight mechanical issue plus the requisite paperwork necessary, however still landed 29 minutes early at 6:29 am. That meant one hour less of sleep, but also took out the pressure from my connection in MNL.

In looking at the flight history, it appears the flight rarely is in the air for longer than 14 hours.

IFE + Wi-Fi

With such a long flight time, I did enjoy a movie called Inside (sort of a psychological thriller) in between sleeping.

a screen with a picture of soldiers on it

Noise-canceling headphones were offered, but were unremarkable (and frankly I prefer that than to having fancy ones like on American and JetBlue that are collected an hour before landing).

a hand holding a plastic bag with headphones

Wi-Fi worked flawlessly through the flight and was only $8 to connect for MileagePlus members ($10 for non-members) and free on mobile phones for select T-Mobile customers, so I was connected on both my laptop and phone.

Food + Drink

Dinner was served after takeoff with breakfast served 90 minutes prior to arrival. During the flight, an optional snack service was available.

Menus were already placed at each seat, along with a bottle of water:

a sign on a wall

Flight attendants offered a pre-departure beverage, a choice between water or sparkling wine. Note, I was grateful to be offered water such that I did not have to consume my water bottle prior to the flight even taking off.

a tray of glasses and napkins

The meal service flow was quite efficient and I appreciated that, as it had been a long day and I wanted to sleep, especially after the delay. Meal service took 40 minutes to commence, but once it did it was quick.

First came a beverage (seltzer water with a lime wedge for me) and warmed mixed nuts (a mix of almonds and cashews).

a glass of water with a lemon wedge and a bowl of nuts

For my appetizer, I chose the burrata (with cracked black pepper, balsamic glaze, cherry tomatoes, basil, and frisée [a curled endive]) over the salmon rillette. It was served with a side salad comprised of baby red leafy greens with English cucumbers, fennel, and yellow bell pepper and bread (both a pretzel roll and garlic bread).

On the same tray the main course was served and I chose the special for this route, beef kare-kare with jasmine rice,  cilantro, fried eggplant, bok choy, and green beans.

a plate of food on a tray

The dish was good. To my unrefined palate, it tasted like Indian food…but I thought it was a fine dish. The green salad was partially frozen, but thawed out when I ate it French-style after my main course. I also noted that “real” butter ramekins are back.

For dessert, I had an ice cream sundae with chocolate sauce, whipped cream, and sliced almonds…I’m not a huge fan of the vanilla ice cream currently in use, but it still hit the spot.

a bowl of ice cream with a spoon

Mid-flight Snack

I fell asleep with 11 hours left in the flight and woke up three hours from Manila, though we had gained time so I had slept for about 7.5 hours.

Stretching my legs, I took a look at the snack station set up between the business class cabins and noticed there was whole oranges and apples, bottles of water, nobles like potato chips and almonds, and leftover cake and cheese plates from dinner.

a counter with fruit on it

I love LilliesQ chips and the cheese and pretzel bites from Whisps.

a bottle of water and snacks on a table

I also ordered a grilled cheese toastie and a cup of tomato soup, both of which were served warm and really hit the spot. At home, I fast from about 9pm to 1pm each day and this part of the flight was at approximately 1pm Pacific Time, so I was right on schedule for my stomach to start growling (despite eating a very late dinner).

a plate of food and a cup of tea on a blue place mat

Breakfast service began 90 minutes prior to landing with a hot towel.

a hand holding a white towel

This flight had a choice I had not previously seen on the breakfast menu, a Spanish potato omelette with rosti potatoes, harvest apple chicken sausage and garlic tomato petals. It was on the dry side, but decent as far as airplane omelets go. It was served with a side of fresh fruit, a rather pitiful croissant, and a Chobani Greek yogurt (with peach).

a plate of food on a table

I give very solid marks to the meal service on this flight. The presentation and the dishes themselves were all quite satisfactory.

Business class has two lavatories in the front of the aircraft and two lavatories between cabins. The Polaris lavatories are stocked with hand creme and hydrating mist from Therabody.

I had an all-male crew in business class and these guys were quite attentive and polite – I was addressed by name and thanked for my 1K status when the meal order was taken and I did not have to wait long for one to notice that I was awake and offer a beverage (and the mid-flight snack).

This was another good flight on United. Most importantly, the seat and bedding were great, but the internet worked well, the food was quite edible, and the service was excellent. I hope this new Manila route works well for United!

Looks like a nice flight. What was the timing of booking and using your PP? I have had a terrible time using PP even when I book premium economy. There are too many business seats already booked so even the PE folks don’t all get upgraded. I have a ton of points left.

' src=

On a serious note, maybe you could donate some to my brother if they are just going to expire. I’ll share about that in a future post. There’s been so much drama beyond the scenes lately.

My upgrade cleared at 23 hours, 50 minutes prior to departure.

' src=

i mean a giant stain on a pillow is kind of gross, and oh so United.

' src=

When I saw the aircraft type I worried that it might be the super crowded old style business class with seven across seats. Is that even still around with United?

Yes, it still flies domestically to Hawaii and some transcon routes.

' src=

The 777-300ER was delivered to United with the new Polaris seats installed. They were the lead aircraft fleet for the transition to the new seat.

' src=

Do you think the wi-fi was only $8 because of your 1K status? From London Heathrow it’s usually $29.99 — seems curious for such a long trans-Pacific flight.

I think this was a glitch. Lately is has been $19.99-29.99 on longhauls.

' src=

I flew this route 2 months after and the wifi was the same price. Very strange but wasn’t complaining,

' src=

Appears the people at the gate area brought heavy suitcases as carry-on bags . No-fly list for them .

' src=

@ Matthew– Thanks for the review! We look forward to giving this flight and the Philippines a try in 2024!

' src=

The Breakfast is exactly what I had in premium economy on UA2 from singapore. I liked it.

' src=

Doesn’t look like the service has improved; course by course would be much better, than having all served on one tray; mid flight snacks are still disappointing on such a long flight; grilled cheese sandw. is so low cost; soup in a cup with no saucer? They need to improve their catering so they can compete with SQ and Eva Air in the south Asia market; coffee served with no saucer & spoon? like a truck stop. Comfort? 20″ width seat is just not comfortable; too narrow; too hard to turn around even if you’re only 5’9″, like myself. Much wider seats on SQ and Eva Air.

' src=

Oh Lord, Ken,

For an affordable business class class flight your expectations are too high. Enjoy the lie flat seat, and drop the other pretentious needs like your snack soup served in a special dish. Really!

' src=

“Aircraft: Boeing 777-200” Should be 300ER

Yep. Thanks.

' src=

Loving this addition to the UA schedule. Avoiding PR with no legitimate mileage program or having to connect in Tokyo is a god send.

' src=

Just as an addendum, I flew United ‘Premium Plus’ the next level down, but above Premium Economy. Good experience, UAL does a very good job, very good service…I will definitely fly this route again.

' src=

PP is premium economy

' src=

A choice of appetizers on a US airline? Huzah! Is this because it’s one of their loner long haul flights?

' src=

I just flew the 2150 from Honolulu on 12/12 in the Polaris Business. It came from Guam, picked me up in HNL to my destination of SFO. I try to only fly 777-300ER on this route.

' src=

One of the endearing qualities of Filipinos is their generosity and they tend to bring lots of goodies back to their families in the form of Balikbayan Boxes of food and souvenirs and tons of luggage. For this reason expect the economy check-in lines to be time consuming. Getting into the business class/elite status line is a must if you can swing it.

' src=

You were correct on your impression of the beef kare-kare, that it seemed like Indian food. It was described on the menu as Filipino curry, but the authentic kare-kare does not have curry. Kare-kare is a peanut butter-based dish. I was not satisfied with the flavor of the dish, but the vegetables were well-cooked.

' src=

I’m shocked and amazed that the route started with a 77w vs 788 to stick a toe in the water Good for United Wow. The weird thing is how long this route took to start given how it’s starting so J-heavy Wow 🙂 Great for UA!

' src=

This is a great flight for United because the Phillipine Air (PR) flights are not a great non-stop option. Business class is pretty bad….the seats are angle flat.

20 plus points?

Isn’t it 30 to go from O-J? Unless this is not a Polaris route

30. You’re correct. My bad.

' src=

Seriously…for such a long flight you have a cardboard menu with two sides? It’s the same united did I flew from IAD to BRU. No effort to up skale food and drink offerings. United is the worst in the Star Alliance. Specially when people are paying money to travel on J. I flew Brussels Airlines J from BRU to DAK which was a6 hour flight had a broad selection of beverages and food choices.

' src=

Just took the same flight in business class and I agree with all you noted. The flight arrived one hour early but my checked priority bag took one hour to come out. My wife’s came out five minutes after the baggage claim started. That was not priority luggage service. Rob H.

' src=

Great review, but too lenient on the stained pillow and frozen salad.

' src=

Are there any arrangements for a lounge in Manila since there is no Polaris lounge there on Terminal 3 MNL. Hoping they will have some type of reciprocal arrangement for the MNL-SFO return in Polaris later today .. also, what time do they allow baggage to be loaded in MNL for the return?

' src=

Just flew this service. UA use the SQ lounge in Manila. It’s just OK.

By continuing to read this article, you agree to double check with the authorities or other concerned entities for the latest updates.

This post was last updated in 2019. Please check out our more recent article about this here: BAGUIO BUS SCHEDULE!

2019 Jan 28

Baguio City has gotten closer and closer to Manila. What used to be an eight-hour drive was shortened to six. And now, if conditions are right, you can reach the City of Pines in only four hours.

But it’s not just the travel time that underwent major changes. Even when you’re taking public transportation, the quality of the journey has vastly improved too. Not only is the ride smoother — thanks to our expressways — the experience onboard the new buses are a lot more pleasant now. It’s no wonder why more and more people choose to visit Baguio these days.

Baguio is only 4-6 hours away from Manila, depending on which part of Manila you’re coming from, which route the bus takes, and whether or not it makes a stop along the way. Regular buses usually take Dau Exit (NLEX) or Concepcion Exit (SCTEX) and make at least one stop. Travel time is around 6 hours.

But the past few years have seen the rise of luxury buses that take passengers straight to Baguio! Victory Liner also introduced their first class buses, giving their loyal customers a more comfortable option. JoyBus has a fleet that is made up entirely of deluxe and premier buses. And most recently, Pangasinan Solid North Transit has also launched their own P2P buses to Baguio. These buses take every expressway ahead and they don’t make any stop, cutting down the travel time to only 4-5 hours.

In this post, we’ll share with you the schedules and fares of these premium P2P buses!

WHAT'S COVERED IN THIS GUIDE?

class travel manila

JoyBus is the luxury arm of Genesis Transport. They only have two classes: Deluxe (aka Executive) and Premier . Both Premier and Deluxe classes are 28-seater executive coaches with 3 seats per row (2+1), ensuring a wide leg room and plenty of moving space. Each booking comes with free snacks, free bottled water, and free wi-fi. But here’s the difference:

class travel manila

  • Premier Class is their top class with USB ports and a personal entertainment device. In our experience, the movie selection is still pretty limited, but since you only have four hours to burn, it’s not that bad. All premier buses also have a restroom onboard and blankets.
  • Deluxe/Executive Class has no USB ports or personal entertainment device at all. There is a TV screen in front, like regular buses, but that’s about it as far as entertainment is concerned. I’m not sure if all executive units have an in-bus comfort room but there was one in the bus we tried.

Below are the timetables per route. We also indicated the types of buses. Items in bold are the Premier buses.

Manila imposes morning-only on-site public school classes from April 11

MANILA, Philippines — Manila announced on Tuesday that face-to-face classes in the city’s public schools will only be from 6:00 a.m. to 12 p.m. starting April 11 until May 28.

In an April 8 memorandum, the Department of Education (DepEd)-Schools Division Office of Manila said the decision to enforce the morning-only classes was in consideration of the health of the students amid the roasting hot weather in the country.

“In view of the onset of summer season where dangerous level of heat index is expected, all public schools in the Division shall conduct classes only from 6:00 AM to 12:00 NN, from April 11 to May 28, 2024,” the document states.

READ: Makati to shorten class period starting April 8 due to high heat index

The memo, however, required teachers to still be physically present in schools despite the adjusted class setting. It also instructed school administrators to “re-calibrate class schedules” to ensure it complies with set standards of the DepEd.

Manila imposes morning-only on-site public school classes from April 11, 2024

This photo shows the memorandum of the Department of Education-Schools Division Office of Manila that imposes morning-only face-to-face classes in the city’s public schools starting April 11, 2024, until May 28, 2024, due to the searing hot weather in the country. (Photo from Manila Public Information Office.)

“It must be noted that teachers shall report to school, regardless of the implemented modality, either to conduct online teaching, prepare activity sheets, check and record learners’ output, monitor learners’ progress, or to fulfill year-end tasks,” the notice states.

READ: School heads can suspend in-person classes due to heat – DepEd

Based on the suggested schedule attached to the memorandum, alternating modes may be implemented where morning session students would have face-to-face classes on the first day, while afternoon session students would have asynchronous classes. The two classes may then switch schedules on the second day.

However, the memo also clarified that School Heads, School Parent-Teachers Associations, and Faculty Clubs can likewise design their own schedules to fit their schools, as long as they follow DepEd parameters.

On April 4, DepEd announced that school heads nationwide could suspend classes at their discretion due to high heat indices.

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration said the heat index in Metro Manila may reach 39 degrees Celsius to 40 degrees Celsius on April 9 and 10.
