5 Best Tour Companies for Young Solo/Single Travelers
Contiki is the most well-known tour company for young travelers worldwide. It’s been around since 1962, so its name carries quite a lot of weight.
But don’t worry if this sounds a bit intense for you…the options below are a bit more “calm.”
So, as you can imagine, most of Contiki’s excursions involve lots of partying and going out with “pub crawl” kind of nights. And since there’s plenty of cool stories online of young travelers who traveled and would travel again with Contiki, it must be one of the best companies available if this is the type of travel you’re looking for.
Contiki has more than 328 distinct tours for many destinations across the 6 continents. According to their website, 55% of travelers who chose Contiki are single and are traveling alone, but the trips can also accommodate groups of friends and couples.
One thing to keep in mind is that the groups are usually quite big, around 30 people, and the main form of travel is the company’s coach bus.
Finally, their tours have a bit of everything: physical activities , exploration of local culture and food, and visits to ethical and sustainable organizations and projects in your destination. In other words, you are capable of a journey full of different attractions, sounds, and experiences!
Topdeck is a company that offers“epic trips and tours for young adventurers aged 18-39.”With 40 years of experience, alongside Contiki, Topdeck is one of the most well-known companies in terms of group travel for young solo/single travelers.
Their trips are divided into several categories:
- Hotel tours: designed for couples or singles who want to travel a bit more comfortably through Europe, the U.S., Canada, or Asia. All hotels have, at least, 3 stars and the excursions give you a lot of free time to relax or explore on your own.
- Explorer trips: these are shorter trips, between 6 days and 3 weeks, with just one country for those who want to explore local culture more deeply. The groups are small and accommodation is in shared or private hotel rooms.
- Hostel plus trip: low-cost tours with accommodation in hostels , cabins, or vans and with itineraries with multiple destinations/countries.
- Camping trips: these trips are the cheapest way to travel through Europe with Topdeck. The accommodation is camping with private chefs cooking meals daily. The bunks are for two people and include mattresses.
- Sailing trips: these trips are an awesome option for anyone who dreams of sailing the world but doesn’t have an idea of where to start. Accommodation is within a sailboat in double, triple, or quadruple rooms with meals included.
- Festivals and events: these tours are specifically for events like Oktoberfest or the Sziget festival (in Hungary) and other festivals in the United States, Canada, and Europe .
- Ski trips: these trips are perfect for anyone who loves snow and skiing . With destinations in Canada, New Zealand, Bulgaria, and Japan . Accommodation is in private or shared hotel rooms.
- Gap year: this trip is made for young travelers 17-18 who want to travel in Europe after graduating high school. It’s a great idea for anyone who wants to travel on their own without freaking their parents out. Accommodation is in hostels and the destinations usually include 8-10 countries.
Created in 1990, G Adventures was born with the idea of offering authentic adventures responsibly and sustainably. Their excursions have reasonable prices and cover all the continents, including Antarctica!
The groups are small and the itineraries are designed so you have time to explore on your own. The trips are themed and have different options for all ages, including a category for young travelers aged 18-39.
The trips in this category are faster-paced and designed for young travelers. In other words, you explore during the day and stay up at night. Their motto for these excursions is “live fast now.” So, their trips are usually longer than the others and offer more activities.
Plus, this category of travel groups is a bit more affordable with accommodation in hostels and a few meals included to guarantee a cheaper price. You can read more about these trips here .
Or, just click in the link above, go to G Adventures main page, click “Travel Styles” and select “18-to-Thirtysomethings!”
It’s worth remembering that these trips follow the basic principles of G Adventures: small groups and free time. Plus, the trips are done in a responsible and sustainable way, prioritizing small businesses and the welfare of animals, children, and indigenous communities.
And finally, like Intrepid, G Adventures is a partner of Planeterra, an NGO dedicated to ensuring that communities touched by tourism benefit from it, rather than be exploited by it. The organization helps to empower local populations, preserve their cultures, and create support systems by managing 50 organizations across the 7 continents with the aim of benefiting women, at-risk youth, and indigenous and rural communities. You can read more about Planeterra here .
Intrepid is considered by many to be one of the best options for those who want to travel as part of an excursion with small, adventure-focused groups .
All trips offered by Intrepid are sustainable, and because of this Intrepid is known and respected as the global leader in sustainable travel.
The company has zeroed its carbon footprint and supports the Intrepid Foundation, a foundation that finances the planting of trees worldwide creates jobs and local education, and helps the world achieve 8 of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals of the United Nations. You can read more about the foundation at https://www.theintrepidfoundation.org/.
Intrepid has many types of trips for all budgets and personalities. That said, the company prides itself in organizing small groups of up to 10 people. This is because Intrepid believes that this is the maximum number of people that still allows a true connection with locals without you simply feeling like just a face in the group. The trips are also always designed to give you some time to explore on your own.
The trips made for young travelers aged 18-29 (called their “18 to 29s” trips) are designed specifically for the new generation of socially-conscious explorers. In other words, they were created for travelers who want to discover new places and cultures, make new friends , and also make a difference in the world.
There are many destinations and the cost of the trips are relatively low given that they are designed for young travelers. You can see all of Intrepid’s tour options here .
Unlike the other companies mentioned above, Trek American only offers excursions for North and Central America. And in general their tours are quite small, just 13 people, with the exception of their “plus” tours of up to 30 people.
Trek America is also quite well-known and has been running since 1972. Like Contiki, the tours are exclusively for young travelers aged 18-38 and include itineraries of 3 days to 3 months.
The reputation of Trek America is that they offer experiences which change your life with a balance between visiting big cities, national parks, and other activities that explore the most incredible places in North and Central America.
And, unlike Contiki, Trek America trips don’t include the “pub crawl” culture. So if you are a young traveler who is more interested in exploring and making new experiences instead of partying, Trek America might be good for you.
They have 3 types of tours:
- Original tours: small group tours with the aim of having an authentic “ road trip ,” with cheap accommodation that includes hostels, camping, and budget hotels. The groups have 10-13 people, which gives you a bit more flexibility in the itinerary.
- Plus tours: offered just to explore North America, these tours offer more comfort, primarily when it comes to accommodation, and you’ll stay in hotels, eco resorts, and apartments. Plus, breakfast is included as is more activities than the original tours. The only “con” is that the groups are usually bigger (up to 30 people).
- BOLT tours: offered exclusively for Central America with a combination of private transportation and local transportation. The groups are 12-18 people with accommodation in hotels and with a bit more flexibility, meaning the most famous tourist spots will be included, but you’ll still have lots of free time to explore on your own.

The tour was amazing, the manager did a top notch job, it’s great for making lots of friends, such a blast. A little rushed and fast paced, but it’s better than the stress of organising your own trip. Definitely doing it again
Splendors of the West
The tour was excellent, hotels were amazing and you couldn't fault the tour guide Laura. Everything was taken care of and we were kept well informed of everything all of the time. A trip of a lifetime! I can't wait to book the next one. The only thing I would say is that I think the optional activities should have been included in the price considering how expensive it is.

Day 1 - Lisbon Lisbon Living
Arrive in the capital and get to know your new friends at the hotel in one of Lisbon’s most exciting neighborhoods.
After a welcome dinner with the group highlighted by stunning rooftop views, the evening is yours. Wander along narrow cobblestone streets and as you meander your way back, stop at any of the tiny bars nestled amongst the labyrinth of vibrant, red-roofed homes.
If you’re lucky, you can catch a Fado show as well—the beautiful, melancholy music echoes from barrooms and taverns across the nation. Just don’t let it bring you down; after all, you’re in Portugal.
Day 2 - Lisbon Oh Azulejos
Start the day with breakfast at the hotel to get the gears in that right-brain cranking; we're getting into the arts this morning.
By now, you've undoubtedly come across the colorfully complex tiles that line homes, shops, subway stations, and just about any other type of wall the Portuguese can find. Known as azulejos, these tiles have been kicking around this stretch of land since the 13th century when the Arabs invaded. With the rest of the crew, you're going to paint like a local and try your hand at some azulejo art.
The afternoon's free to wander the hills, and then you'll trade dinner for something a bit more fun as you explore the city's character and charm with a food and wine walking tour through one of Lisbon's trendiest neighborhoods.
Day 3 - Lisbon / Sintra High class
Today, we’re hopping on the train to Sintra. In the cool mountain air, you’ll set out on tuk-tuks and twist between homes, shops, palaces, and castles that date to the Middle Ages.
After checking out the Romanticist architecture of the Pena Palace from a mountaintop viewpoint, we’re heading into the stone spectacle of Quinta da Regaleira, arguably Sintra’s most impressive palace. Wander the gardens and then twist down into the Initiation Well to explore the spine-tinglingly spectacular underground grottos.
You’ll have lunch with friends before heading back to Lisbon. The evening is yours to explore the artsy enclave of Alfama; no one will judge you if you set out for more wine.
Day 4 - Lisbon Unwind
After a day twisting up and down Sintra’s hills, it’s time to unwind—the day is yours to chill out or head off exploring with friends.
If you decide to stay in the city, consider hopping in a cab to the north of town and checking out the National Tile Museum. Housed in an ancient convent that was restored after being reduced to rubble in the earthquake of 1755, this colorful stop has numerous exhibits showcasing azulejo, or the traditional tile work found all over Portugal.
If you’re in the mood for a beach day, head to the Cais do Sodré train station and take the short ride to the resort town of Cascais for an afternoon in the sand.
Day 5 - Lisbon / Evora Back in time
After breakfast, it’s time to get cooking. Rich, crumbly custard tarts are on the menu. A specialty in the region, these savory pastries, known locally as pastéis de nata, are smooth on the inside and crispy on the outside.
Then, it’s time to head out on the road toward Evora. The inland city is older than the Portuguese capital and is also a UNESCO Heritage Site. Spend the afternoon walking back in time on a guided tour of streets and alleys once inhabited by the Celts, Romans, Moors, and Visigoths. You’ll even stroll through the hauntingly beautiful Chapel of Bones, a 16th-century skeletal structure built by Franciscan monks.
After your deep dive into ancient times, head to a group dinner, and if you’ve still got the energy, follow it up with some fun and bar-hopping.
Day 6 - Evora / Algarve beachbound
Fuel up on breakfast at the hotel in Evora before driving south to the Algarve, Portugal’s most spectacular beach region.
It’s a bit of a hike and this is Portugal after all, so we’ll pop off at a vineyard on the way down, and you can pop into some more of that famous Portuguese wine if you so desire (and if you feel up to it after a night at the bars).
We’ll get down to the Algarve by mid-afternoon, where you’ll check into your digs by the beach. Take the afternoon to soak up the sun or hop into the dazzling blue sea as it laps at the shore.
Day 7 - Algarve to the sea
Get out on the water and start exploring! The endlessly beautiful coast of the Algarve is made up of jagged limestone walls and staggering caves chiseled by the sea. You’ll explore it all on a private, day-long boating adventure.
Lunch will be prepared on board, so the day truly belongs to you. Lounge with friends, swim through the balmy waters, and explore the remarkable rocky coast of Southern Portugal.
In the evening, we’ll all meet up for one final night of fun at our farewell dinner.
Day 8 - Algarve farewell
Today is our last day in Portugal. We’ll share one final breakfast together before we all go our separate ways.
If you prefer to stick around to explore a bit on your own (which we recommend!), the hotel will be happy to store your bags.
If you're after more European fun beyond Portugal, head to Northern Spain and the Basque Country for amazing cuisine or to Sardinia for golden beach vibes!

Vodka Museum Tour with transport (excursion only)
Lena, our guide in Moscow was excellent. She was very knowledgable and could answer any question we had for her. We liked that she could pick up on our interests and take us places we might not have thought of to go. When we realized that one of the places we had chosen to see would probably not be that interesting to us, she was able to arrange entry to the Diamond Fund and the Armoury for us. Riding the Metro with Lena was a real adventure and a lot of fun. In Saint Petersburg we found Anna well versed in the history of the Tsars and in the Hermitage collection. Arkady in Veliky Novgorod was a very good guide and answered all of our questions with ease. Novgorod was perhaps a long way to go for a day trip, but we did enjoy it. Vasily was a great driver to have and kept us safe with good humour and skill. We enjoyed ourselves so much, my daughter says she is already planning to return. We would both have no hesistation to recommend ExpresstoRussia to anyone we know.
Just wanted to let you know that My grandson Bruno and I couldn´t have been more pleased with our week in Moscow (6/15 - 6/21). We were absolutely enchanted with the whole experience, including getting lost a couple of times in the Metro during our free time. Although both our guides (both Eleanas) were excellent, I would particularly commend the first one (she took us to the Tatiakov, the KGB tour, and to that beautiful cemetery where so many great Russian artists, authors, composers, musicians, militarists, and politicians are buried). Her knowledge is encyclopedic; and her understanding of today´s Russia as a product of its past was, for us, truly enlightening. I will be taking another tour in Russia, with my wife, within the next two or three years. I will be in touch with you when the time comes. Meanwhile, I will refer you to other potential visitors to Russia as I meet them.

Moscow, a City Like No Other
Moscow is Russia’s largest city with a population of between 12 and 13 million. It is also Europe’s largest city and when you visit Moscow, you can feel it. The layout and architecture of the city is eclectic, ranging from crooked, ancient streets and alleyways to wide, bustling boulevards, from medieval churches to Stalin skyscrapers and to modern, glass buildings towering over everything and of course in the center of it all is the Kremlin and the magnificent Red Square. Moscow is also home to a fantastic, efficient and very beautiful metro system – each station having its own special design. In fact, Express to Russia’s Moscow metro tours and excursions are some of our most popular attractions that we offer. On our Moscow tours, you will see this and more.
Moscow Tours centering on Russian History
Moscow has a long and interesting history and has been the capital of Russia in many of its different iterations – capital of the Grand Duchy of Moscow , the Russian Empire and of course the Soviet Union (who could ever forget the Soviet Union?). Moscow, was founded in the 12th century by Prince Yuri Dolgaruki (Yuri of the long arms – he really did have long arms!). From that time on, it was home to the Russian Tsars until Peter the Great moved the capital to St. Petersburg in 1703. The city has survived invasions and sieges from the Mongols, the Tartars, the Poles, Lithuanians and Napoleon but has always persevered. Our Moscow tours will enlighten you on this great history and give you insights into Muscovites and their unique culture. Our Moscow tours show you what the city is like today but also brings to life the past. Moscow never seems to sleep and is bursting with energy. A Moscow tour with Express to Russia is truly the best way of getting to know Russia’s largest and most vibrant city.
Frequently Asked Questions From Our Travelers
What is the best time to visit moscow.
Any time of year is fine depending on what you plan to do. Summertime is pleasantly warm, ideal for exploring the city and its vibrant atmosphere, but Moscow will be much busier and accommodation is more expensive. Winter can be quite cold but beautiful nonetheless, and this is unproblematic if you intend to spend most of your trip in museums and galleries. There are also various festivals and events organised throughout the year. For more information about the best time to visit, read our guide
How many days are enough in Moscow?
If you plan your itinerary strategically and aren’t averse to a packed schedule, you can cover Moscow’s main sights over a long weekend. Most popular attractions are in the city centre, and the Moscow Metro allows you to cover much ground in a small amount of time. Ensure that your accommodation is fairly central and book tickets in advance, so that you can make the most of your days. For an informative and well-organised day out, check out our Moscow day tours with options to suit all interests.
Do they speak English in Moscow?
As Russia’s capital city, tourists are well accommodated in Moscow. There should be English-speaking staff in restaurants, bars, hotels, shops and attractions in tourist hotspots, and there are also English-speaking tourist police. Transport services have English translations on their maps and English announcements via intercom; alternatively, order taxis from the Yandex Taxi app (Russian Uber), though it’s unlikely that your taxi driver will speak English. If you get stuck and cannot communicate, it’s fine to use Google Translate.
Is it safe to travel to Moscow?
It is no less safe to travel to Moscow than to any European city if you exercise common sense and look after your belongings. As with every city some regions can be more unsavoury than others, but no tourist attractions are located there. The traffic in Moscow is notorious, so exercise caution when crossing roads. Do not take unlicensed taxis; book in advance or take public transport, which is widespread and perfectly safe. If you encounter any problems, look for the special tourist police who can help you. For more information, read our guide about staying safe in Russia .

More about south america trips & tours, is traveling to south america safe.
We get this question a lot, especially from solo travelers. The answer is yes. Safety is one of our biggest concerns anywhere in the world and South America is no different. Your Trip Leader will advise you on the local area and provide recommendations for free time or night activities so you don’t have to worry. On all of our trips, we advise traveling light and leaving any valuables at home so you don’t attract unwanted attention. One of the best parts about group travel is “safety in numbers”. You don’t need to be alone and finding others to enjoy activities with is easy.
Do I need to know Spanish?
While helpful, you will not need to know Spanish for any of our trips. Your Trip Leader will be fluent in the local language if any communication help is needed but you’ll find some locals speak English fairly well. One of the highlights of many people’s trips is learning to order a meal or conversing with someone about their day in basic Spanish or learning a few words in Quechua. Remember: Portuguese is the national language of Brazil, not Spanish!
What is the best time of year to visit South America?
South America is a huge region with tropical rainforests, deserts, beautiful coastlines, and mountains over 20,000 feet in height so the answer depends on exactly where you are traveling. You will generally find that our Machu Picchu trips run year-round but the dry season is considered to be April to September. You will find that our Galápagos Islands trips run between November and May which is considered the peak times to visit the islands. Please check the Trip Details page for more weather and packing information on the specific trip you are looking at.
Why sign-up for a group trip to South America?
Here are just a few of the reasons we see travelers join our group trips:
- Not everyone wants to plan and research everything there is to know about an entire country. Our trips include many of the best locations and activities in each country built for young adventurous travelers.
- A local guide is with you throughout your trip to help with foreign languages, lead you on hikes, teach you about the area and make sure each day goes as planned. It can be reassuring knowing that you are always on the right trail or having a Trip Leader that knows backup plans in bad weather or has recommendations for extra activities.
- Meeting great people! When you join an Under30Experiences trip you know you will be with a group of like-minded people in your age range.
Over 800 5-star reviews!
"Just got back from U30X's trip to Brazil and had an awesome time! Middle East latest: Baby delivered after mother killed in Rafah strike; Netanyahu vows to 'increase pressure on Hamas in coming days'
A baby girl was delivered in an emergency caesarean section after her Palestinian mother was killed by an Israeli attack in the Gaza city of Rafah. Meanwhile, Benjamin Netanyahu has said Israel will "increase the political and military pressure on Hamas in the coming days".

By Alex Crawford , special correspondent
The UN Special Coordinator for Lebanon has told Sky News the dangers in the region have not gone away and called for calm, wisdom and de-escalation as a matter of urgency.
Joanna Wronecka spoke from her office in Beirut about her worries and appealed for restraint from all those involved.
"I'm very concerned," she said. "Because we need just a small miscalculation and the situation can escalate even more."
She was referring to the spike in cross-border firing between the Israeli military and the Lebanese Hezbollah fighters who've been trading attacks with growing intensity since 7 October.
You can read Crawford's full piece here...
The campaigner who was called "openly Jewish" by a police officer last weekend, has been offered a meeting with a senior Metropolitan Police officer.
In a statement, the force said assistant commissioner Matt Twist had written to Gideon Falter, chief executive of the Campaign Against Antisemitism, to offer a private meeting.
The meeting is "to both apologise to him personally and discuss what more the Met can do to ensure Jewish Londoners feel safe", the police said.
We reported this morning the Board of Deputies of British Jews will meet Met Police chief Sir Mark Rowley this week, along with the Jewish Leadership Council and antisemitism charity CST regarding the incident (see post at 2.05pm).
A baby girl was delivered in an emergency caesarean section after her Palestinian mother was killed along with her husband and daughter by an Israeli attack in the Gaza city of Rafah, Palestinian health officials have said.
The baby is stable and improving gradually, Mohammed Salama, a doctor caring for her, said.
Her mother, Sabreen Al-Sakani, had been 30 weeks pregnant.
The baby will stay in hospital for three to four weeks, Dr Salama said.
"After that we will see about her leaving, and where this child will go, to the family, to the aunt or uncle or grandparents. Here is the biggest tragedy. Even if this child survives, she was born an orphan," he said.
Israel has carried out near-daily air raids on Rafah, where more than half of Gaza's population of 2.3 million have sought refuge from fighting elsewhere.
It has also vowed to expand its ground offensive to the city on the border with Egypt despite international calls for restraint.
German Chancellor Olaf Scholz had a telephone call with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu today and discussed the state of the region, a spokesperson for the German government has said.
"The chancellor emphasised that it was essential to avoid a regional escalation," the spokesperson said.
It comes as Iran and Israel, who have been locked in a shadow war for years, try to dial back tensions following a series of escalatory attacks between them as the Israel-Hamas war inflames the wider region.
Israel war cabinet member Benny Gantz has spoken with US Secretary of State Antony Blinken and asked him to reconsider the decision to sanction the IDF's Netzah Yehuda battalion, the American news website Axios reports, citing Mr Gantz's office.
For context : This weekend a report from Axios claimed the US was expected to announce sanctions within days on the IDF battalion for human rights violations in the occupied West Bank.
Prime Minster Benjamin Netanyahu has already responded, warning it is "forbidden" to sanction the IDF.
The Axios report adds it would be the first time the US has imposed sanctions on an Israeli military unit.
Israel and Iran have been at war for decades but they have been fighting in the shadows.
Analysts believe both countries are now trying to ease tensions following a series of escalatory attacks between them.
Here, our international affairs editor Dominic Waghorn explains how we got here and what could be next.
We have been reporting today on Israeli strikes on the southern Gaza city of Rafah overnight which killed 22 people, including 18 children, according to health officials.
Now, the IDF has responded to the overnight strikes.
"At the given times, the IDF struck several military targets of the terrorist organisations in Gaza including military compounds, launch posts and armed terrorists," it said in a statement.
For context : Israel has carried out near-daily air raids on Rafah, where more than half of Gaza's population of 2.3 million have sought refuge from fighting elsewhere.
It has also vowed to expand its ground offensive to the city on the border with Egypt despite international calls for restraint, including from the US.
Israel will "increase the political and military pressure on Hamas in the coming days", Benjamin Netanyahu has said.
Speaking before the Jewish holiday of Passover that starts tomorrow, the Israeli leader said all proposals for the release of hostages had been "outright rejected by Hamas".
"In the coming days we will increase the military and political pressure on Hamas because this is the only way to free our hostages and achieve our victory," he said.
He also responded to reports of imminent US sanctions on the IDF religious battalion Netzah Yehuda saying: "If anyone thinks they can impose sanctions on a unit in the IDF I will fight it with all my might."
The balance between the right to protest and the rights of everyone else had been completely lost, a charity that protects British Jews from antisemitism has said.
We have been reporting this weekend on a Met Police officer who was recorded preventing a Jewish man from crossing a road by a pro-Palestinian march because he is "openly Jewish".
The force has since apologised.
Responding to the incident in a statement on X, the Community Security Trust (CST) noted that since 7 October it had seen a "record increase in anti-Jewish hate crime against a backdrop of constant anti-Israel hate demonstrations".
It said CST was working with the police to protect the Jewish community but despite "all the good work" there had been "mistakes".
"This latest case fits that profile, with the context and detail lost in the heat of controversy. An individual officer tried to do the right thing but ended up making things worse in a very difficult moment," the charity said.
The broader question, the CST said, was "how much longer these costly and disruptive protests will be allowed to continue".
"It feels like any balance between the right to protest and the rights of everyone else had been completely lost, with extremists the only ones to benefit, Jews the first to suffer and the police often caught in the middle," it added.
The Israeli military says its soldiers shot two Palestinians who tried to attack them in the West Bank this morning.
We reported earlier today the IDF claimed two Palestinians tried to stab and shoot its soldiers near the city of Hebron (see our 9.13am post).
One was reported dead, but now the Palestinian health ministry says both have been killed.
The Israeli military said: "One of the terrorists attempted to stab IDF soldiers that were in the area, who responded with live fire and neutralised him."
The force added: "At the same time, the other terrorist opened fire at the soldiers, who responded with live fire and neutralised him too."
The official Palestinian news agency WAFA, quoting local sources, said ambulance crews were prevented from reaching the two men.
Palestinian security sources told WAFA the two men, aged 18 and 19, died and that they were still unable to collect their bodies.
