Getting travel refunds at a glance

Air travel cancellations, hotel cancellations, car rental cancellations, vacation rental cancellations, canceling a flight, hotel or rental car: now what.

If your airline cancels or makes major changes to your flight — no matter the reason — you are eligible for a full refund under Department of Transportation regulations . So why do so many passengers end up with a voucher instead?

Airlines often try to skirt regulations by giving passengers the option to accept a modified itinerary, even if the changes are major. But for casual travelers who've found themselves entrenched in the confusing world of refunds and who are expecting to receive cash for cancellations, many travelers might be surprised to receive vouchers instead.

Whether it's airlines, hotels or rental cars, here's what you need to know about travel refunds and when you're entitled to one, as well as how to receive and use vouchers if you otherwise can't get a cash refund:

Although specific refund and voucher policies vary from situation to situation and airline to airline, some consistencies (and federal regulations) allow for a few broad generalizations. Here's the quick glance at what you're entitled to, based on type of travel:

Air travel canceled by the customer more than 24 hours after booking will usually be compensated in the form of flight vouchers, which must be used within a certain period of time. Customers who book a more expensive "refundable" fare may be able to get a cash refund.

Air travel canceled by the airline is eligible for a full cash refund, though the airlines will often try to avoid this.

Hotel cancellations are often fully refundable if made more than 24 hours before check-in (except for prepaid/nonrefundable rates), but this varies by booking.

Car rental cancellations are almost always fully refundable, except for prepaid reservations.

Vacation rental (Airbnb, Vrbo) cancellations vary by property.

Now we'll break that down a bit deeper:

Air travel cancellation policies vary based on two factors: when the cancellation is made and who is doing the canceling.

Cancellations made within 24 hours

All flights starting in the U.S. that are canceled within 24 hours of booking are eligible for a full cash refund under Department of Transportation regulations . It doesn’t matter if you book directly through the airline or through a third party booking service: You are eligible for a refund to your original form of payment if your flight originates in the U.S. and you cancel it within 24 hours.

However, some airlines make the process of receiving these refunds cumbersome or confusing, sometimes suggesting you accept alternatives to the cash refund. If you are having trouble finding a way to get your cash back online, call the airline or travel booking service directly.

Cancellations made after 24 hours made by the traveler

If you want to cancel a flight more than 24 hours after booking, it is subject to the cancellation policy of that particular airline and fare:

Refundable fares are generally eligible for a full cash refund.

Some tickets, including many basic economy fares, simply cannot be canceled.

Some tickets can be canceled for a voucher refund, minus a cancellation fee.

Others can be canceled for free, but are available to travelers in the future as flight vouchers.

Now that most U.S. airlines have removed cancellation fees , the most common situation is the last one. You will be able to get a full refund for your nonrefundable flight, but not a cash refund. Instead, you’ll get a voucher or credit for future flights booked within a certain time frame. This isn't ideal, but it’s better than nothing. Just remember to use your voucher before it expires.

Cancellation made by the airline

If the airline cancels or makes major changes to your flight, for any reason, you are eligible for a full refund under Department of Transportation regulations . The definition of "major changes" isn't totally clear, but in general, any schedule change of more than 24 hours should be eligible for a full refund.

However, airlines will often try to skirt this regulation by giving passengers the option to accept a modified itinerary, even if the changes are major. Here’s an email from Singapore Airlines, with our highlight in red:

clear trip refund policy

Because “accept” looks like a default option and the alternative is less prominent, a passenger may not be fully aware of their rights. Don’t fall for it: Always request a refund if the proposed changes aren't ideal.

Also note that sometimes airlines owe you money for delays or cancellations (or at least other forms of compensation, such as meal and hotel vouchers).

And if your flight was canceled at the last-minute by the airline, you'll have to move fast to minimize disruption for the rest of your travels. Make these moves fast if your flight was canceled . And while this won't help you now, bookmark this for next time: NerdWallet's guide to how to book a flight that's less likely to get canceled .

Hotel cancellation policies are generally more straightforward than airline policies, though there are no federally enforced cancellation rules. Hotel bookings generally fall into two categories:

Fully refundable rates, which can generally be canceled within 24 hours of check-in for a full refund.

Prepaid, nonrefundable rates.

Most hotel brands offer flexible rates as the default, which are generally more expensive but either are refundable or don't require upfront payment, period. Often though, travelers prefer prepaid rates purely because they tend to be cheaper. Before booking, consider how likely it is that your travel plans might change. Saving a couple bucks on the prepaid rate might not be worth it in the end if you had to cancel and now can't get your money back.

clear trip refund policy

You should be able to see the terms of the cancellation policy for your booking during checkout. Read and understand them before committing.

One more reason why hotels tend to be more generous than airlines. Unlike airfare, the value of canceled flexible hotel bookings usually isn't offered in the form of credits or vouchers, but as a direct refund of the deposit amount to your credit card .

This one’s easy: Unless you specifically book a prepaid rate for a car rental reservation, you should be able to change, cancel or modify it without incurring a fee. The rules for cancellations on prepaid rates vary among companies and reservations, but they are often more flexible than nonrefundable airfare — and even more flexible than hotel bookings.

Vacation rental brands like Airbnb and Vrbo take a slightly different approach: They offer a range of cancellation policies, from extremely flexible to nonrefundable, and let the hosts (property owners) choose from these policies.

So when booking, look for the specific policy on each property. Here’s an example of Airbnb’s flexible policy:

Refunds from cancellations should come directly to your card — no credits or vouchers are involved.

Canceling travel is never a fun experience, but it can be made all the more challenging when confronted with a host of different rules and conditions for each type of booking. Thankfully, most hotel cancellation policies are fairly straightforward: You can either cancel your booking or you can’t, and you’ll get a cash refund if you do.

However, airline cancellations are a world unto themselves and require a bit more patience and understanding. In general, you won’t get a cash refund unless you cancel within 24 hours of booking, cancel a refundable fare or have the booking canceled by the airline.

Need to Change Your Travel Plans Due to Coronavirus? These Are Your Options

Travelers the world over are working to cancel or rebook upcoming trips due to the global coronavirus pandemic.

This is a developing story. For up-to-date information on traveling during the coronavirus outbreak, visit the websites of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the World Health Organization.

For travelers who are having to cancel upcoming trips due to the global coronavirus pandemic (and given the unprecedented scope of this international health crisis, we know there are a lot of you), airlines, hotels, and tour operators are offering cancellation and rebooking options that are (rightfully) more generous than what you would expect during non-pandemic times.

Numerous travel companies have considerably relaxed their change and cancellation policies through the summer and into the fall. Many appear to be keen on doing right by travelers who were unknowingly affected by this situation before anyone fully understood its scope and scale, even as they suffer some pretty unfathomable financial losses themselves.

However, if it’s a full refund you’re hoping for, unless the airline, tour operator, or cruise line canceled your trip (and even then it’s not a guarantee), you’re not necessarily going to get one. The U.S. Department of Transportation did recently remind U.S. airlines that they remain obligated to provide refunds to passengers for flights that were canceled by the airlines.

Travelers with existing reservations for trips that are due to take place several months from now may be in limbo for a little while longer as some travel companies wait to decide on what to do about change and cancellation options further out. While those travelers are likely anxious to make a decision one way or another, to just go ahead and cancel or reschedule, there could be some benefits in waiting a bit to see whether some of these policies do in fact end up getting extended (again).

As for what’s on the table right now, here is a roundup of coronavirus-related change and cancellation policies.

Will airlines refund tickets due to coronavirus?

In light of the coronavirus pandemic, airlines have had to cancel thousands of flights due to travel restrictions that have been put in place by various governments (including by the United States ) and due to a drastic drop in demand as large swaths of the population are sheltering in place and practicing social distancing to mitigate the spread of COVID-19.

Given the avalanche of cancellations, airlines have been steering customers toward the option of obtaining a future flight credit—versus a refund—if their flight has been canceled because of the COVID-19 outbreak. But in early April, the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) issued a notice to U.S. and foreign airlines reminding them that they remain obligated to provide “a prompt refund to passengers for flights to, within, or from the United States when the carrier cancels the passenger’s scheduled flight or makes a significant schedule change and the passenger chooses not to accept the alternative offered by the carrier.” (Lawmakers in Europe followed suit days later , with Europen Union Transport Commissioner Adina Valean rejecting calls from airlines to relax refund rules.)

The DOT stated that it had been receiving a growing number of complaints and inquiries from ticketed passengers who said they have been denied refunds for flights that were canceled or significantly delayed.

For flights that passengers choose to cancel, the airlines are offering future flight credits, allowing travelers to cancel their ticket and basically set aside that money to be used on a flight at a later date—and thankfully, you don’t have to book that flight now (which is good because it’s impossible to know how this pandemic is going to play out). American and Delta are currently offering that flexibility for flights that were scheduled to depart all the way through the end of September, and United’s flight change waiver now extends to the end of the year.

American Airlines: Any flights booked on American up until May 31, 2020, for travel through September 30, 2020, can be rebooked without change fees for travel that takes place by December 31, 2021; flights booked between March and May 31, 2020, for all future travel can also be canceled and changed without a change fee (while the fees will be waived, you will be charged a fare difference).

The airline is encouraging those who don’t plan to travel anytime soon to simply cancel their flight online and then rebook at a later date. When you’re ready to rebook, call the reservations department and be prepared to give them your 13-digit ticket number and 6-character confirmation number.

If a flight was canceled by American Airlines (either due to travel restrictions or capacity reductions), American said it will send affected passengers an email, and they can either rebook the trip or request a refund for the remaining ticket value and any optional fees.

United Airlines: For a flight booked with United between March 3 and April 30, 2020, you can change it for free—one time—for travel that takes place within the next year. Any flights booked prior to March 3 (regardless of whether they are domestic or international) with original travel dates through May 31, 2020, can be canceled and rebooked for a flight that takes place within 24 months with no change fees. Flights booked prior to March 3 with original travel between June 1 and December 31, 2020, can be canceled and rebooked within 24 months with no change fees but the change or cancellation must be done by April 30, 2020 .

With regards to requests for refunds for canceled flights, United now has an online form that customers can fill out to see if they qualify for a refund. The airline said it could take up to 21 business days to process each request.

Delta Air Lines: Any Delta ticket for domestic or international travel through the end of September can be canceled and rebooked without a fee for travel that takes place up until September 30, 2022. Flights purchased between March 1 and May 31, 2020, can be changed without a fee for travel up to a year from the date of purchase. For flights canceled by Delta, the airline said that passengers will either be issued a future flight credit for the value of the ticket or they can  request a refund .

JetBlue: Customers who were due to travel with JetBlue through January 4, 2021, on any flight that is booked by May 31, 2020, can cancel and bank the funds to use for travel up to 24 months from the date the flight credit was issued.

Southwest Airlines: Southwest’s standard refund policies hold, with a few coronavirus-related adjustments. The carrier has tier fares that include refunds (Business Select and Anytime) and a tier fare (Wanna Get Away) that doesn’t include refunds. Those remain the same. But regardless of the type of ticket purchased, it can be canceled sans fee for a future travel credit for up to a year from the original date of purchase. However, if you had travel funds that were set to expire between March 1 and June 30, 2020, those will now expire on June 30, 2021; travel credits from flights canceled for travel that was originally scheduled to take place between March 1 and June 30, 2020, will expire on June 30, 2021.

Alaska Airlines: Alaska flights purchased on or before February 26, 2020, for travel that was originally scheduled to take place March 9 through December 31, 2020, can be canceled, the money set aside in an Alaska account, and the flight rescheduled for anytime up to one year from the original travel date. Any tickets purchased between February 27 and May 31, 2020, for travel anytime through April 30, 2021, can also be changed with no fee for travel up to one year from the original travel date.

British Airways: The U.K. carrier is allowing customers who have booked or who book new flights between March 3 and May 31, 2020, to change those flights for free—and any existing bookings for departures through May 31, 2020, can be changed without a fee as well. Those who would prefer a refund have been asked to call the airline.

Air France: The French airline is offering a travel voucher for flights that were scheduled to depart through July 2, 2020, which will be valid for one year on any Air France, KLM, Delta Air Lines, and Virgin Atlantic flights.

How are Expedia, Priceline, and other online agencies handling coronavirus refunds?

Online travel agencies such as Expedia, Travelocity, Orbitz, and Priceline serve as “middlemen” between travelers and travel suppliers. They have different working relationships with all the suppliers on their sites, which can complicate things a bit.

For instance, Expedia , Orbitz, and Travelocity can help change or cancel reservations for some of the air carriers they sell tickets for, but not all of them. For the ones with which they lack that ability, customers will have to work directly with the airline. But the bottom line is: The airline’s policy will be the policy that customers of Expedia, Orbitz, and Travelocity will have to work with.

Priceline advises its customers that “if your airline does not allow you to cancel or change your flight, we are not able to help you at this time.” The travel booking site offers a very comprehensive contact list, including websites and phone numbers, for all its partner airlines.

On the hotels front, Expedia, Travelocity, and Orbitz are allowing customers to cancel with no penalty all hotel stays through May 31, 2020, that were booked prior to March 19, 2020. For hotel stays after May 31, 2020, Expedia advises customers to check back with the site closer to the departure date.

Coronavirus refunds for hotels and vacation rentals

Hotels have always been pretty flexible when it comes to changing and canceling reservations, but in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic, they are being even more so.

Marriott International: Marriott is allowing all guests at all of its more than 7,300 properties around the world with existing reservations, for any upcoming stay regardless of the date and regardless of whether the original rate had some restrictions, to change or cancel without a charge up to 24 hours prior to arrival—here’s the key thing to note— as long as the change or cancellation is made by June 30, 2020 . For those who make new reservations now through June 30, 2020, they will be allowed to change or cancel at no charge up to 24 hours before arrival, regardless of the date of stay.

Hilton: For guests who have booked stays that were scheduled to begin on or before June 30, 2020, at any of Hilton’s more than 6,100 global properties, the change fee is being waived and the company is offering full refunds for all cancellations (including on reservations described as “non-cancellable”) up to 24 hours before arrival. New reservations booked between now and June 30, 2020, for any future arrival date, can be changed or canceled at no charge up to 24 hours before arrival.

Accor: The 5,000-hotel Accor hasn’t offered much detail on its coronavirus-related change and cancellation policies other than to say that it has advised all of its hotels to adopt flexible change and cancellation conditions for travelers with new or existing bookings through April 30, 2020.

Intercontinental Hotel Group: IHG has waived cancellation fees for existing bookings that were made by April 6, 2020, at all of its hotels the world over for stays through June 30, 2020. It is handling groups and meeting bookings on a case-by-case basis. The company has also developed some new rates and booking options for future travel such as its “book now, pay later” rate, which doesn’t require a deposit and can be canceled up to 24 hours before your stay for bookings made up to September 3, 2020, for travel until December 30, 2020.

Airbnb: Vacation rental powerhouse Airbnb recently issued an updated global change and cancellation policy. Reservations for stays and experiences made on or before March 14, 2020, with a check-in date between March 14, 2020, and May 31, 2020, can be canceled for a full refund by guests, and hosts can cancel without a charge or impact to their Superhost status (and Airbnb will refund all service fees). Reservations made on or before March 14 with a check-in date after May 31, 2020, as well as any reservations made after March 14, 2020, will not be covered unless the guest or host has contracted COVID-19. Otherwise, the host’s standard cancellation policy will apply.

What are tour operators’ policies for coronavirus changes and refunds?

Given the global health crisis that the coronavirus pandemic presents, most reputable tour operators have gone ahead and proactively canceled a good portion of their upcoming itineraries (similar to what the cruise lines did—see below). Here are some examples.

Tauck: Long-time tour provider Tauck has canceled its scheduled tours and cruises through June 30, 2020—and for those tours it will refund the affected guests. For tours that were scheduled to take place between July 1 and July 31, 2020, guests can cancel and receive a future travel credit for any tour in 2020 or 2021 (but airline change fees will not be covered). Standard change policies remain in place for tours scheduled to take place August 1, 2020, and beyond.

Abercrombie & Kent: Luxury tour operator Abercrombie & Kent has temporarily suspended ground operations globally from March 17 to May 31, 2020. A&K is offering guests on those journeys a future tour credit (that will include a 10 percent discount) for any trip for travel that takes place up to December 31, 2021.

Intrepid Travel: Global tour company Intrepid Travel has also suspended its tours through September 30, 2020. For those tours, travelers will receive a 110 percent future tour credit that they can apply toward any itinerary up until September 30, 2022. For tours departing October 1, 2020, and beyond, Intrepid said they are continuing as planned at this point, but that if customers choose to cancel, they can do so and receive a credit for whatever they had paid to be used for travel that takes place by September 30, 2022.

Collette: Family-owned tour operator Collette has canceled all its tours through June 30, 2020, and all affected guests are being offered either a future travel credit or the generous option to receive a refund.

What about cruises?

On March 14, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention issued a 30-day “ No Sail Order” for all cruise ships to prevent the spread of COVID-19. As of April 15, 2020, the CDC extended that order, and cruise ship operations (in waters subject to U.S. jurisdiction) have been suspended until July 24, 2020, or until the U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services declares that coronavirus no longer constitutes a public health emergency, or until and unless the CDC Director rescinds or modifies the order.

Affected customers are being offered anywhere between a 100 percent and 200 percent future cruise credit by the cruise lines.

How travel advisors can help

During a complicated and overwhelming global crisis such as the coronavirus pandemic, a travel advisor can serve as a great ally. While travel advisors can’t force travel suppliers to refund their clients, they typically have stronger relationships with suppliers and thus more sway. They will be better able to help you navigate through the options for changing your trip plans. And as travel professionals (who likely have dealt with numerous crises in the past), they can offer their advice based on their myriad of contacts in the industry and from their own personal experience.

They will also have greater insights into the kinds of trustworthy and reliable travel companies you will want to book your future travel with as we navigate this ever-changing pandemic landscape.

Can travel insurance help you get a refund?

With regard to the current coronavirus crisis, travel insurance providers consider it to be a known event as of January 21, 2020 (or thereabouts, the date can change slightly depending on the provider, but usually falls sometime between January 21 and January 27, 2020). Travel insurance purchased before that date will cover disruptions resulting from the outbreak, but any travel insurance purchased after that date will not.

An exception to that is Cancel for Any Reason (CFAR) coverage , an optional upgrade to a travel insurance policy that covers cancellations for reasons not otherwise covered by a standard travel insurance “such as fear of traveling due to coronavirus or simply not wanting to travel to a country that may be affected,” according to Megan Moncrief, chief marketing officer for travel insurance search and review site Squaremouth.

There are some limitations, however. The CFAR upgrade has to be purchased within 14 to 21 days of making the initial trip deposit and it will reimburse travelers for up to 75 percent of their trip cost—for a price. Cancel for Any Reason coverage typically costs between 5 and 10 percent of the total trip cost.

Ultimate guide to canceling a flight and getting a refund with major US airlines

Meghna Maharishi

Editor's Note

Most airlines now have favorable policies if you need to cancel your flight, especially if you booked using points or miles. If you book the right fare with an airline that has friendly cancellation policies, you may not be out hundreds of dollars — or be on the hook for astronomical fees — should your travel plans change.

However, with many different airlines and varying policies, it can be overwhelming to figure out each carrier's rules. To make it easier, we put together this guide about the cancellation and refund policies for the major U.S. airlines.

Can I cancel a flight and get a refund?

clear trip refund policy

These days, all airlines allow you to cancel a flight, and most make it extremely easy to do so. You can usually cancel a flight online, and many carriers let you get a refund in some capacity.

For the most part, if you book a nonrefundable fare — the most common fare type — you'll receive a credit or voucher for a future flight. However, you'll find that some airlines charge a fee to cancel, and they might base the fee on how far in advance you cancel.

For example, Southwest Airlines has one of the most generous cancellation policies, regardless of the fare type. As long as you cancel at least 10 minutes before your flight's scheduled departure time, there is no fee to cancel your reservation, whether it is a paid fare or one booked on points. While you'll end up with a travel credit for the amount paid if you cancel a paid fare, Southwest won't deduct any fees from that voucher. Also, if you booked using Southwest points, the airline will immediately return them to your account with no fees.

Delta Air Lines, American Airlines and JetBlue Airways also have favorable cancellation policies — as long as you didn't book their least expensive basic economy fare .

On the other hand, Frontier Airlines will charge you a $75 fee when canceling a reservation booked on miles. Canceling a paid reservation will cost you even more.

Perhaps the least favorable airline is Allegiant Air , which requires you to cancel seven or more days in advance and charges a cancellation fee per segment (not round-trip).

So, when you wonder if you can cancel a flight and get a refund, the answer depends on many factors, including the airline, the fare type and how far in advance you cancel.

How to cancel a flight with major airlines

Many airlines allow you to cancel a flight without hefty fees. Since every airline operates slightly differently, we've compiled the policies for each major airline and the associated fees so you can figure out how to cancel a flight. This information is for a regular passenger (not one with status) on a standard reservation.

If you booked under special circumstances, we've linked to our full guide for each respective airline, which goes into more detail about each one's policy. These guides also include the policies for changing a flight instead of fully canceling.

Alaska Airlines' cancellation policy

clear trip refund policy

Canceling a paid Alaska Airlines reservation

Alaska allows you to cancel all reservations within 24 hours of booking — for travel starting more than 24 hours from the time of purchase.

After the 24-hour mark, there are no cancellation fees, and all fare types are now eligible for some sort of credit. For Main and First Class fares, you'll receive the full amount paid as a certificate to use toward a future flight. For flights purchased on or after July 19, 2023, even Saver fares are eligible for a credit. However, you'll only receive a 50% credit of the ticket value, and the flight must be canceled at least 14 days prior to departure of the first flight on the ticket. (For flights purchased prior to this date, Saver fares will not receive any credit if canceled in advance.)

All certificates received when canceling a flight are valid for 12 months from the issue date of your original ticket or 30 days from the date of cancellation — whichever is greater.

The only way to receive a full refund is by purchasing a fully refundable fare during the booking process.

Canceling an Alaska reservation booked with miles

Passengers can cancel an award reservation by calling Alaska's reservation center. The airline will deposit the miles back into your account once you cancel your award flight, and you'll receive a refund for any taxes paid.

Allegiant Air's cancellation policy

clear trip refund policy

Canceling a paid Allegiant reservation

Allegiant has one of the more strict policies when canceling a flight: You must cancel seven days before departure and will still have to pay a fee. Typically, the fee is $75 per segment (not for the entire reservation), but for a while now, Allegiant has reduced the fee to $25 per segment. When canceling, you'll receive a voucher for the amount paid (minus the total cancellation fee), valid for up to one year from the original booking date.

When canceling a flight within seven days, the airline won't issue a credit, and you'll lose the entire ticket value.

Canceling an Allegiant reservation booked with miles

Allegiant offers a unique policy regarding canceling an award booked with miles. You'll be charged the same fee per segment, and the flight must be canceled at least seven days in advance. The points redeemed will not be redeposited back into your account; you'll instead receive a voucher for the value of the ticket.

American Airlines' cancellation policy

clear trip refund policy

Canceling a paid American reservation

You can now cancel all American reservations, except American's basic economy fares, without a fee. However, some flights originating outside North and South America have slightly different policies.

With basic economy fares, you'll be charged a $99 fee, which is taken out of the value of your ticket. This policy only applies to AAdvantage members for flights within the 50 states.

When canceling a reservation, AAdvantage members will receive a trip credit that expires one year from the date of issue of the original ticket. For trip credits issued on or after March 11, 2024, nonmembers, unfortunately, only have six months to use the credit. But since membership is free, this is a solid reason to enroll in the AAdvantage program.

Canceling an American reservation booked with miles

American allows you to cancel award flights for free. There are no redeposit fees, and your miles will immediately return to your account. Since you can't book a basic economy fare with miles, there's no need to worry about this more restrictive fare type. However, from personal experience, you'll want to make sure that the taxes and fees paid are refunded back to the form of payment (such as a credit card) and do not get issued as a trip credit.

Delta Air Lines' cancellation policy

clear trip refund policy

Canceling a paid Delta reservation

Most Delta fare types for flights originating in the U.S. and Canada (except Delta basic economy tickets) will allow you to cancel your flight without a fee. Flights originating outside of these two destinations carry different rules and up to $400 in fees.

When canceling a basic economy fare for travel originating in the U.S. or Canada for travel to the Caribbean, Central America or Mexico, the fee is $99. For all other routes, the cancellation fee is twice the amount, at $199. Unfortunately, basic economy flights originating in Mexico cannot be canceled.

Canceling a nonrefundable fare will result in an e-credit for the full amount paid (minus any cancellation fees, depending on fare type and route). However, if you cancel a refundable ticket, you'll get the amount paid refunded back to your original form of payment. Currently, e-credits expire a year from the original ticketing date; that is just the book by date, and you don't have to actually travel by the expiration date.

Canceling a Delta reservation booked with miles

Similar to a paid reservation, as long as you book a fare type other than basic economy, you can cancel your flight, and Delta will redeposit the miles back into your account with no fee. Additionally, Delta will refund any taxes and fees to the original form of payment.

For reservations booked as basic economy (for domestic travel within the U.S. and Canada), you can still cancel your flight. However, Delta will deduct between 9,900 and 19,900 miles from the amount it redeposits into your account when you cancel.

Frontier Airlines' cancellation policy

clear trip refund policy

Canceling a paid Frontier reservation

Frontier Airlines is unfortunately no longer as customer-friendly as it used to be. If you cancel your flight, you'll be charged a $99 fee per direction. When cancelling a flight, you'll receive a credit for the price paid minus the cancellation fee, and you'll need to use this credit within 90 days of receiving it. Again, this is a "book by" date, and you can travel post the expiration date.

One way around the fee is by changing your flight instead of canceling. This only comes in handy if you know of another Frontier flight you're looking to book. This is because there's no change fee when making a change on a Frontier reservation 60 days or more before your flight. However, within the 60-day window, you'll be charged a fee (per direction): $49 for flights 59 to seven days prior to departure and $99 for flights six days or less prior to departure.

Canceling a Frontier reservation booked with miles

Unlike many other airlines, Frontier charges a cancellation fee even if you booked with miles. Regardless of how far in advance you cancel, you'll need to pay a $75 redeposit fee.

Hawaiian Airlines' cancellation policy

clear trip refund policy

Canceling a paid Hawaiian reservation

Similar to most other airlines, you can cancel a Hawaiian Airlines flight within 24 hours of booking for a full refund — as long as the flight was booked at least seven days in advance.

After 24 hours have lapsed, you can cancel main cabin, first-class and business-class fares on Hawaiian without a fee — but there's a catch. While you'll receive a flight credit for the amount paid, you'll lose any remaining value associated with your credit when you book a new flight if the new flight is less expensive than the previous flight. Main cabin basic fares can be canceled, but you will not receive any credit back.

Additionally, fully refundable fares are slightly deceiving. To receive the refund back to your original form of payment, Hawaiian charges a $25 to $100 fee — depending on the route. You can always avoid this fee by taking a travel credit instead, but it negates the concept of purchasing a refundable fare.

Credits received from canceling a flight can be booked up to one year from the date the credit is issued.

Canceling a Hawaiian reservation booked with miles

For tickets purchased with HawaiianMiles, there's no fee to cancel and redeposit your miles.

JetBlue Airways' cancellation policy

clear trip refund policy

Canceling a paid JetBlue reservation

For all fare types, except for Blue Basic fares, there's no fee to cancel your reservation before departure.

For all nonrefundable fares, you'll receive the entire amount paid back as a JetBlue Travel Bank credit, which expires 12 months from the original booking date. These credits are nontransferable, but you can use a credit to book for another passenger from within your JetBlue account.

For Blue Basic fares, the cancellation fee is either $100 or $200, depending on the route. For routes in North America, Central America and the Caribbean, the fee is $100 per person. For all other routes, the fee is $200 per person. You'll still receive a travel credit (minus the fee) for these reservations.

Canceling a JetBlue reservation booked with miles

You can cancel any JetBlue flight booked with points without a fee. When canceling, the points redeemed will go back into your account. However, the taxes and fees paid will go into your JetBlue Travel Bank credit — not back to your original form of payment (which is the policy for most other airlines). Again, the credits received expire 12 months from the original booking date.

Southwest Airlines' cancellation policy

clear trip refund policy

Canceling a paid Southwest reservation

Southwest is one of the best airlines if you need to cancel your flight. You can cancel a Southwest flight for free if you do so at least 10 minutes before departure.

For Wanna Get Away and Wanna Get Away Plus fares — the two least expensive fare types — you'll receive a credit for the amount paid. For Wanna Get Away fares, the credit isn't transferable, and only the original passenger can use the credit. If you booked a Wanna Get Away Plus fare, any individual can use the credit.

Anytime and Business Select fares, however, are fully refundable. If you need to cancel one of these fares, you'll receive a full refund for the amount paid back to your original form of payment.

Canceling a Southwest reservation booked with miles

Similar to a paid reservation, when you cancel a flight booked with miles at least 10 minutes before departure, Southwest will return the points to the account used to book the award without charging any fees. The taxes and fees paid for the award will return to the original payment form.

Spirit Airlines' cancellation policy

clear trip refund policy

Canceling a paid Spirit reservation

Spirit allows you to cancel a flight but charges a fee based on when you cancel the flight. If you cancel, you'll receive a credit for the amount paid minus the fee. However, the credit isn't transferable and expires 90 days from when you receive it.

Here's what you can expect to pay in fees when you cancel a paid Spirit reservation:

Canceling a Spirit reservation booked with miles

When canceling a Spirit flight you reserved with miles, the same cancellation policy applies as if it were a paid reservation. Spirit will charge you a $69-$119 fee to redeposit your miles if you cancel within 59 days of your flight. It won't charge a fee if you cancel 60 days or more before your flight.

Related: How to change or cancel a Spirit Airlines flight

United Airlines' cancellation policy

clear trip refund policy

Canceling a paid United reservation

For almost all United flights, except those booked in basic economy, you can cancel for free if you are traveling within the U.S. (including Alaska and Hawaii), Canada, Mexico or on an international flight that originates in the U.S. For United basic economy tickets, if your plans change, you'll ultimately lose the value of the ticket entirely.

Unless you book a refundable fare (or a basic economy fare), you'll receive a flight credit for the value of the price paid when you cancel. These credits expire one year from the date the credit was issued.

Canceling a United reservation booked with miles

United no longer charges fees for canceling award flights; your miles will be redeposited after you cancel your flights. However, United charges a $125 fee, regardless of status, for redepositing miles if you're a no-show to your award flight.

Can you cancel plane tickets?

clear trip refund policy

Many people book flights a year in advance and hope their vacation plans stay intact. However, plans can change. Fortunately, many airlines offer more friendly cancellation policies than we once saw, so you don't have to wonder whether you can cancel a plane ticket.

Whether you book with miles or as a paid reservation, you can always cancel a plane ticket, but the refund policy varies from one airline to the next. You must be comfortable with how you'll receive your money or miles back. For the most part, you'll receive the money back as a credit and the miles back into your account. For lower-cost airlines, though, there's typically an associated fee.

Can you refund plane tickets?

clear trip refund policy

Whether you can get a refund for plane tickets depends on the fare type purchased and what you are looking for in terms of a refund. No airline offers full refunds back to the form of payment for every ticket purchased. Instead, you must purchase a more flexible fare type or a refundable ticket if you want this privilege.

While not all airlines offer refundable fare options, some airlines allow you to purchase an add-on to your ticket. This add-on may make your reservation fully refundable if you need to cancel.

For example, Frontier offers "The Works" package , where one of the benefits is that your fare is fully refundable.

Some airlines do not allow refunds on their most basic fare types. For instance, if you purchase a basic economy fare on United, you can't get a refund on a plane ticket. If your plans change and you must cancel, you'll lose your entire ticket value.

Related: Why you should wait to change or cancel your flight if you want your money back

Bottom line

Before purchasing your next plane ticket, it's smart to be well-versed in the airline's policy. You always hope that your intended travel plans go off without a hitch. However, life happens, and there are times when you might need to cancel a flight.

If you're not confident of your plans when booking your flight, booking with a more favorable airline or purchasing a fare class with more flexibility may be your best bet.

If I could I would give no star

If I could I would give no star. I clearly choose my departure. Somehow, I got another departure assigned at the last minute without me noticing it. Right after receiving the confirmation, I checked and noticed the mistake. They charged me the insurance payment plus another penalty within 2 minutes of receiving the confirmation. Not right.

Dear Valued Customer - We truly regret the inconvenience caused to you. Please provide us your Trip ID so that we can connect and assist you.

Looks like "cheating trip". I bought a ticket on February 23 and…

I bought a ticket on February 23 and paid for it. On February 24, I received an email stating that the airline did not confirm the ticket and the money will be returned to my account within 8-10 days. I called the support center on 02.03 and they told me that they checked the status of the refund, the money has not yet been transferred and I need to wait a few more days. On 03/08 I called to say that 10 working days had already expired and then the assistant told me that the money had been returned to my account on 02/24. I called clear trip support 2 more times on the same day and was told that the money was returned on 03/02. And another assistant told me that this return was made on 02/24. Why do assistants report different dates when checking the status of the same return? Why, a week after the return was supposedly made, was I told that the money had not been returned and that I still needed to wait? Looks like a scam. Now I am waiting for the transfer data (I don’t know if they will send it to me or if I was deceived again), with which I will need to go to the bank to find out why the money did not arrive in the account within 2 weeks. I have bought air tickets more than once, used the Clear Trip service before and have always been satisfied. But real experience allows me to advise myself and other people to stay away from cleartrip and book air tickets only on airline websites.

Uncooperative Company

I made a booking on the 19th 9 pm for my father, who is 87 years old and in a wheelchair. Clear air was not willing to change the flight by one day after 2 hours of booking even after the airlines were willing to cooperate. The customer service will not be in line with the website. The website showed no charge to change flight ticket while customer service asked for 10,000 inr. I spoke with two customer service members, Ankit and Khusboo and they were both not willing to help.

WORST SERVICE !!! Complaint Regarding Overcharged Amount

CASE ID: 19789908 My name is Karan Thakur, and I recently utilized your services for a travel booking (TRIP ID - 24013092036) for Mr. Mohammed Ebrahim Yusufuddin Shaikh. I am writing to express my concern and disappointment regarding the amount charged for rescheduling. Upon reviewing the Airline system ticket & your CRS ticket, I noticed that the final amount for rescheduling charge is Rs. 7887, but your executive Mr. Jaspreet from Reschedule department charged us Rs. 12587. This discrepancy has raised serious concerns on my end, as I believe it is essential for any travel agency to adhere to transparent and fair pricing practices. I kindly request that you investigate this matter promptly and refund us the excess amount charged. It is crucial for us to maintain a clear and honest communication to ensure a positive and lasting business relationship. I look forward to your prompt attention to this matter and a swift resolution. Please respond to this email or contact me at [9869503183 / 9867944710] at your earliest.

Not getting Full refunds from Cleartrip

I booked flights in early february for travel to Kochi and Back. The airlines cancelled the flights. As per policy I am supposed to get the full refund. But Cleartrip has not refunded the full amount. I am unable to contact them as their number +91959533333 does not function and I am unable to send anyone in the organization email. Very Sad how the organization treats customers.

Sriman Naarayan S - We truly regret the inconvenience. Could you please share your Trip Id , we’ll arrange a call back for you.

Refused to give Tax Invoice and also instructed hotel to refuse to user(Me)

I booked a hotel through the ClearTrip portal, and during profile creation, they requested details, including GST information. Despite paying and booking, I didn't receive the GST Invoice. ClearTrip directed me to the hotel, but the hotel stated they were instructed by ClearTrip not to provide the tax invoice to users. Upon questioning, ClearTrip refused to provide the GST Invoice, citing it as an internal policy. I inquired about the legal exemption, and they mentioned not collecting GSTIN information on behalf of hotels. I've reached out multiple times through various channels (phone, email, Twitter) without success. My GSTIN details were collected by ClearTrip before the hotel booking, and the hotel amount was fully paid in advance on the ClearTrip portal, not at the hotel.

Bad customer support

I booked a flight through flexifly. It is the first time I am using flexifly to reschedule flight. I had to pay Rs.4400 additionally. However they promised me 3550 refund after ticket is done which itself is not completely fine (why should I pay 850 extra even when new flight fares are lower than previous one). Then I received a link from godigit to give them my ifsc code and acc number. No explanation for what purpose (I assume for processing refund). When I call customer care for queries, no one is available and call drops automatically. Why should I provide bank details, it could easily be a fraud.

Super easy to book, amazing prices!

The easiest app I’ve used with finding flights and hotels. I will recommend it to all my friends! It’s awesome! Couldn’t believe the low prices on top of the extra discounts offered on the flights/hotels!

Developer Response ,

Thank you for kind words.

Not as good as before.

Cleartrip used to be the place to go but sadly, that is not the case anymore. The prices have gone up and they’ve become somewhat greedy. Sharing and selling customer information in order to make money. Not a good idea. I know many people that have stopped using Cleartrip because of this. I’m now forced to use flight network and cheapoair to book my tickets because Cleartrip prices have gone way up! It’s really not good to do this to your long time customers. You’re going to loose business doing such things in the long run because people will leave negative reviews for you. The app updates are almost completely useless as well. Not to mention, that they charge a convenience fee!?!?!!! When you’re booking a flight form Cleartrip they charge you a desperate convenience fee which no other website does... That is how they steal from you without you even knowing about it. No other website or business that I’m aware of charges a convenience fee. They don’t tell you about it until you’ve picked your flight and you’re ready to pay for it... Suddenly, it pops up and says that you have to pay a convenience fee which can be anywhere from 30-50AED depending on the price of your flight. Ridiculous and outrageous. I’ll never be using Cleartrip again because of the things that they do. Greedy business that does not care about their customers.

CLEARTRIP CLEARLY EXPOSED- A FRAUD COMPANY

I had to cancel my flight tickets on March 20 due to corona pandemic, then coming to the refund, they made me wait for 60 days and it’s May 20, still haven’t got the refund. When email cleartrip, they said Cathayapcific airlines is not responding to them. So I called Cathaypacific airlines global customer care and got to know that cleartrip haven’t cancelled my tickets yet and they kept my tickets open. And then I tried to contact cleartrip mentioning the same, and at this stage cleartrip stopped responding to my emails because they knew that they were just deceiving me by keeping me waited for more than 2 months and giving stupid reasons every time. This is how cleartrip service is. Guys, I request everyone to book tickets with their trusted travel agent or if possible directly with the airlines. NEVER CHOOSE CLEARTRIP FOR YOUR TRAVEL. THEY WILL MESS UP EVERYTHING. YOU WILL BE PSYCHOLOGICALLY TORCHURED. Please save yourself.
Pradeep - Very sorry to hear about your experience. Please help us with the Trip ID and we will get it checked.

How does the refund process work?

Because of the pandemic, the airline industry is facing a difficult situation with a large number of flight cancellations and pending payment refunds. If you wish to change or cancel your flight reservation, we will contact the airline on your behalf, although please keep in mind that airline rules vary from airline to airline and we cannot guarantee that the airline you are traveling with will be able to meet your request. Please know that we are doing our best to support you in this challenging situation. Read more about our fee for the manual handling here.

We handle all refunds or change requests in the order we receive them and the expected handling time is longer than usual due to the pandemic and the increased volume. We are doing our very best to assist you as quickly as possible.

How will you keep me informed about updates?

You will receive an email when your change or refund has been processed and we ask you to wait for such further information via email before contacting us. Remember that you can check your refund status by logging in to "My Bookings", which you can access through the top right corner of our site, or by clicking here. Log in with Facebook or Google if you used your linked email account to make the booking, or enter your order number and the email you used when booking.

“Cleartrip refund completed!”

Trip ID *******57442. Cleartrip has completed refunding my transaction after further follow-up on their part. I appreciate that this is finally resolved. Thank you.

“Uncooperative company”

I made a booking on the 19th 9 pm for my father, who is 87 years old and in a wheelchair. Clear air was not willing to change the flight by one day after 2 hours of booking even after the airlines were willing to cooperate. The customer service will not be in line with the website. The website showed no charge to change flight ticket while customer service asked for 10,000 inr. I spoke with two customer service members, Ankit and Khusboo and they were both not willing to help.

Cleartrip offer Ct flex or flexible ticket and refund policy but it's a headache because: 1- insurance by third party company Digit, 2- Don't work for foreigners,3- Refund takes 15 working days or even more, 4- poor customer service and bad policy. I bought two ticket CT flex and changed the date, I paid full for new ticket and I asked Cleartrip for refund. Refund is necessary to contact Digit, a third party company and its very annoying because I bought from Cleartrip they should refund and not another company. So, Godigit asked Indian ID and Indian Bank account to refund, I say that we we are foreigners and got a ticket from travel agent so can just return him and we pick up the money. By their policy is not allowing, only for ticket holders and Cleartrip don't take any responsibility. Such Scammers selling thing that we cannot get refund. Avoid to buy any CT Flex from them,
