I saw Colony House at the Fillmore in Washington DC. A great intimate venue, perfect for Colony House and the band they opened for: MUTEMATH! Mutemath stole the night, as would be expected; but, I was impressed enough with Colony House to get some of their music. Very solid writers and good performers.

COLONY HOUSE ROCKS!!! I didn’t know them that well before, but I saw them open for Switchfoot, and their opening show was phenomenal!! I’ve added most of their music to my library, and can’t get enough of them! They’re incredibly talented, and I’ve always loved the Chapman’s father, Steve Curtis Chapman, so that got me really interested in them and I love them! They’ve expanded my music taste a bit, and I’d love to see them again!!

Great act, I love this band. Their live show added a different take on their hits that preserved the original character of the song, for example the acoustic guitar-only rendition of Caught me by surprise. They came on stage and jammed with Switchfoot later, which was fun. I would have liked the colony house opening act to go on longer.

Colony House’s Caleb Chapman Talks New Album & First Headlining Tour: ‘We’re Trying to Earn Our Stripes’

As indie-rock quartet Colony House embarks on their first-ever headlining tour around the United States, frontman Caleb Chapman chats with Billboard about how the band came to be, their latest album…

Colony House

Growing up with a musician as a father, Colony House founding brothers Caleb and Will Chapman always had artistry in their blood. And after doing just about everything together throughout their childhood (including playing in their dad’s band), the siblings were always kind of destined to eventually be in a band together too — creating the foundation for their Franklin, Tenn.-based rock quartet.

In fact, Caleb (vocals/guitar) and Will (drums) were already paving their “brothers in a band” path as early as second grade: Two Car Garage, inspired by what their mom called Will’s mouth when he was missing his two front teeth. “It was pretty much like if Nirvana was in second grade,” Caleb tells Billboard . “We had a song called ‘Football in the Air’ that was literally about playing football. It was awesome.”

Maluma and Saweetie Join Team Legend and Team Dan + Shay as 'The Voice' Mentors to Kick Off Playoffs

Although that name (and songs about sports) didn’t continue into their high school years, the boys played their own music while also backing their dad, Christian-rock singer/songwriter Steven Curtis Chapman. Once they met guitarist Scott Mills through their cousin, the Chapman brothers and Mills began their venture as a band — first under the name Caleb after their lead singer, as they weren’t quite sure what direction the group would take or if it’d just be more of a solo thing for Caleb.

Trending on Billboard

After determining that they would officially be a band, the guys chose the name  Colony House , in honor of the housing complex where some of the guys lived in Franklin. Shortly after, the alt-rock band released its debut album,  When I Was Younger , in 2014, spawning a successful single with the bouncy “Silhouettes,” which caught attention on alternative-rock radio and has 10 million Spotify streams to date. The album gained enough momentum to get the band on notable tours with artists like Needtobreathe, Ben Rector and Switchfoot, also breaking into the Billboard 200.

While touring the first album, the then-trio realized they needed a bass player. They had met Parke Cottrell when he opened up for them at a small show in Knoxville, Tenn., and decided to enlist him — despite the fact that Cottrell had never played the bass before. Luckily he’s “really good at everything,” as Caleb says, so he ended up being the perfect addition. “He started as a friend, so there hasn’t been growing pains or anything,” adds Caleb. “It doesn’t really feel any different.”

Flash forward to Jan. 13, 2017, when Colony House dropped its sophomore album  Only The Lonely , which Caleb says is “the story of our experience with the first album, and what doors it opened.” Inspired by the sounds of the late Roy Orbison’s era (whose classic 1960 ballad of the same name gives the album its title) Only The Lonely  presents a bit more of an unpolished rock ‘n’ roll sound for the group, something that Caleb says was intentional, because they wanted to make the album more transparent than the last release — and because their live performances seemed to be resonating well with fans.

In the two-and-a-half-year gap between their first and second records, the Colony House guys focused primarily on touring to, as Caleb puts it, prove that they could “make things happen” as a band. “We were trying to earn our stripes a little bit.” Additionally, the guys were more concerned with producing something they were 100 percent happy with than pushing another album out quickly. As a storytelling songwriter, Caleb is big on being vulnerable in his music — and  Only The Lonely  speaks to just that.

“When you play 200 shows a year, you’re away from home a lot. And there’s this interesting thing that happens where you’re around people all the time, but you find yourself kind of lonely,” he says, speaking about the album’s inspiration. “I think we wanted to shed light on feeling alone, the issue of ignoring it and letting it swallow you up, or not ignoring it and making sure that you’re continuing to be vulnerable with people. We’re always looking for threads that weave us all together in music, and we felt like this is was a thread that is a universal thing.”

With When I Was Younger , Caleb had previously said that the songs involved questions he’d been “wrestling for months and years.” Some of those questions carried over into the second LP.

“I think, as a band, something we’ve always wanted to be conscious of is asking questions, but not feeling like we always have to answer them,” he explains. “Because I think it can lead to really beautiful discoveries if you get to the place where you’re vulnerable and you’re okay with not knowing at all. We don’t fancy ourselves philosophers or anything like that, but we’re all just trying to listen and learn from people around us.”

The band will get a chance to listen and learn from fans for the next couple of months, as they kick off a 37-date headlining tour across North America. As Colony House’s first headlining trek of their career, Caleb asserts that “it seems like a next chapter” for the group. What they ultimately hope to do with this tour is inspire those who attend — whether they’re longtime fans or just getting familiar with the band.

“We don’t want our music to be an escape from reality,” Caleb insists.  “We want to be part of that reality with our fans, and we want to give them an hour-and-a-half of something inspiring and hopeful. Like, everything that makes a up a good movie: devastating, tragic, but also really beautiful.”

Transitioning from opening band to headliners is a pretty great indication that Colony House is on its way up with its latest album and beyond. And although this next chapter can be nerve-wracking, Caleb feels that the future looks bright for his band.

“We’re just gonna walk through all these doors that keep opening. It feels like a ball is rolling somewhere, we want to just hop on and see where it take us,” he says. “We haven’t been this nervous and excited about something yet up til this point. So that’s kind of cool – whenever you’re nervous, it usually means something’s at stake, which means something big could come of it.”

Colony House Announces National Tour in Support of New Album

Most of the shows will be on sale Friday, 10/28 at 10 AM local time.

Nashville-based rock band, Colony House, has announced a nationwide headlining tour in support of their fourth full-length studio album, The Cannonballers, out February 3rd, 2023. The tour will kick off on February 11th, with a hometown show at The Ryman Auditorium. Tickets to that show are now available HERE , and the rest of the shows will be on sale Friday, 10/28 at 10 AM local time.

Adding to the excitement is the premiere of the new video, "Landlocked Surf Rock," an apt description of the band's signature sound and a tribute to their home state of Tennessee. The video features an intro by legendary country writer, and subject of the movie, Love, Tom, Tom Douglas.

Frontman Caleb Chapman was inspired to write the songs that became The Cannonballers while being locked down at home in 2020. "The pandemic was the first time since high school that I had been off the road for an entire year. We got to see the seasons change and experience our home again for the first time in a long time," he says. "I think I was falling back in love with Tennessee and realizing how special it is to be born and raised in such a beautiful place."

Comprised of Caleb Chapman (vocals, guitar), his brother Will Chapman (drums), Scott Mills (guitar), and Parke Cottrell (bass), Colony House has continued to unite fans under its banner of hope and light in a world that feels more divided every day. The band has performed on Late Night with Seth Meyers and CONAN, as well as The Today Show, VH1's "Morning Buzz," and MTV Live, as well as at festivals including Shaky Knees, Austin City Limits, Firefly, WonderBus, and Lollapalooza.

Colony House's 2014 debut, When I Was Younger, included the instantly popular single "Silhouettes," which became the #1 most-played track on Sirius XM's Alt Nation for four months straight. Their sophomore album, Only the Lonely, included the surf-rock hit, "You Know It," which reached mega-viral status on Tik Tok, vaulting it to over 100 million streams. The band's third effort, Leave What's Lost Behind, was released in January of 2020, before they were forced to pause alongside the rest of the world. During that time, they produced and directed a full-length feature film, Everybody's Looking For Some Light, which was an official selection at the Nashville and Knoxville Film Festivals, and debuted at a two-day drive-in event at Greystone Quarry in Franklin, TN. Last year saw the release of Colony House Live, Vol. 1, and the EP, Rotten Tomatoes. In support of that EP, they were able to return to the road, headlining 45 dates in the US before their first overseas headline tour in 2022.

The Cannonballers drops on February 3rd, 2023, and is now available to pre-save . Colony House will be touring throughout the spring in support of the album. Visit colonyhouse.com/tour for more information and tickets.

Colony House prepares for their debut performances at THE GRAND OLE OPRY and BONNAROO

Article contributed by one in a milli… | published on saturday, april 29, 2023.

colony house tour opener

The music of Colony House —an indie rock band made up of brothers Will and Caleb Chapman, as well as Scott Mills and Parke Cottrell—is playfully self-described as “landlocked surf rock.” Their music is built on pillars of honesty, accessibility and family, and much of The Cannonballers is too: within 11 tracks, the band delves into where they come from and how a place, and its memories, have made them.

The Cannonballers marks the band’s fourth full-length release: their three previous studio collections take listeners on a journey through stories of loss, grief, and heartbreak while welcoming them into the hope that comes on the other side. Colony House’s 2014 debut, When I Was Younger, included the single “Silhouettes,” which became the #1 most played track on Sirius XM’s Alt Nation for four months straight. Only The Lonely, whose title and demeanor pay tribute to the vintage sounds of Roy Orbison and the Beach Boys, followed in 2017. The surf-rock hit, “You Know It,” went viral on Tik Tok, and has amassed 100 million streams across all platforms to date, after being featured as the soundtrack to Samsung Mobile’s nationwide ad campaign. Leave What’s Lost Behind was released in January of 2020; the band managed to play half of their 40 city headline tour before being forced to pause alongside the rest of the world. Like many touring artists, they found different ways to continue to create, producing and directing a full-length feature film, “Everybody’s Looking For Some Light,” which was an official selection at the Nashville and Knoxville Film Festivals. The movie debuted at a two-day drive-in event produced by the band at Greystone Quarry in Franklin, TN. Over 2,000 people (in over 600 cars) showed up to watch the film and see Colony House perform.

Colony House has performed their songs for worldwide audiences with two appearances on both Late Night with Seth Meyers and CONAN, as well as The Today Show, VH1’s “Morning Buzz,” and MTV Live. They have also been part of several festival lineups including Shaky Knees, Austin City Limits, Firefly, WonderBus, and Lollapalooza. In June of 2023, Colony House will add Bonnaroo to that list, after a national tour that kicked off with a sold-out show at their hometown’s Ryman Auditorium.

The Cannonballers is an apt addition to the band’s catalog, staying true to what Colony House does best, and expanding on what their fans have gravitated to for the past decade: hope and light in the midst of it all. No frills, no gimmicks. Just heart-level rock and roll music.

The Cannonballers is now available wherever you listen to music. In support of the album, Colony House is on tour now. Dates HERE .

Kings of Russia

The Comprehensive Guide to Moscow Nightlife

colony house tour opener

Moscow’s nightlife scene is thriving, and arguably one of the best the world has to offer – top-notch Russian women, coupled with a never-ending list of venues, Moscow has a little bit of something for everyone’s taste. Moscow nightlife is not for the faint of heart – and if you’re coming, you better be ready to go Friday and Saturday night into the early morning.

This comprehensive guide to Moscow nightlife will run you through the nuts and bolts of all you need to know about Moscow’s nightclubs and give you a solid blueprint to operate with during your time in Moscow.

What you need to know before hitting Moscow nightclubs

Prices in moscow nightlife.

Before you head out and start gaming all the sexy Moscow girls , we have to talk money first. Bring plenty because in Moscow you can never bring a big enough bankroll. Remember, you’re the man so making a fuzz of not paying a drink here or there will not go down well.

Luckily most Moscow clubs don’t do cover fees. Some electro clubs will charge 15-20$, depending on their lineup. There’s the odd club with a minimum spend of 20-30$, which you’ll drop on drinks easily. By and large, you can scope out the venues for free, which is a big plus.

Bottle service is a great deal in Moscow. At top-tier clubs, it starts at 1,000$. That’ll go a long way with premium vodka at 250$, especially if you have three or four guys chipping in. Not to mention that it’s a massive status boost for getting girls, especially at high-end clubs.

Without bottle service, you should estimate a budget of 100-150$ per night. That is if you drink a lot and hit the top clubs with the hottest girls. Scale down for less alcohol and more basic places.

Dress code & Face control

Door policy in Moscow is called “face control” and it’s always the guy behind the two gorillas that gives the green light if you’re in or out.

In Moscow nightlife there’s only one rule when it comes to dress codes:

You can never be underdressed.

People dress A LOT sharper than, say, in the US and that goes for both sexes. For high-end clubs, you definitely want to roll with a sharp blazer and a pocket square, not to mention dress shoes in tip-top condition. Those are the minimum requirements to level the playing field vis a vis with other sharply dressed guys that have a lot more money than you do. Unless you plan to hit explicit electro or underground clubs, which have their own dress code, you are always on the money with that style.

Getting in a Moscow club isn’t as hard as it seems: dress sharp, speak English at the door and look like you’re in the mood to spend all that money that you supposedly have (even if you don’t). That will open almost any door in Moscow’s nightlife for you.

Types of Moscow Nightclubs

In Moscow there are four types of clubs with the accompanying female clientele:

High-end clubs:

These are often crossovers between restaurants and clubs with lots of tables and very little space to dance. Heavy accent on bottle service most of the time but you can work the room from the bar as well. The hottest and most expensive girls in Moscow go there. Bring deep pockets and lots of self-confidence and you have a shot at swooping them.

Regular Mid-level clubs:

They probably resemble more what you’re used to in a nightclub: big dancefloors, stages and more space to roam around. Bottle service will make you stand out more but you can also do well without. You can find all types of girls but most will be in the 6-8 range. Your targets should always be the girls drinking and ideally in pairs. It’s impossible not to swoop if your game is at least half-decent.

Basic clubs/dive bars:

Usually spots with very cheap booze and lax face control. If you’re dressed too sharp and speak no Russian, you might attract the wrong type of attention so be vigilant. If you know the local scene you can swoop 6s and 7s almost at will. Usually students and girls from the suburbs.

Electro/underground clubs:

Home of the hipsters and creatives. Parties there don’t mean meeting girls and getting drunk but doing pills and spacing out to the music. Lots of attractive hipster girls if that is your niche. That is its own scene with a different dress code as well.

What time to go out in Moscow

Moscow nightlife starts late. Don’t show up at bars and preparty spots before 11pm because you’ll feel fairly alone. Peak time is between 1am and 3am. That is also the time of Moscow nightlife’s biggest nuisance: concerts by artists you won’t know and who only distract your girls from drinking and being gamed. From 4am to 6am the regular clubs are emptying out but plenty of people, women included, still hit up one of the many afterparty clubs. Those last till well past 10am.

As far as days go: Fridays and Saturdays are peak days. Thursday is an OK day, all other days are fairly weak and you have to know the right venues.

The Ultimate Moscow Nightclub List

Short disclaimer: I didn’t add basic and electro clubs since you’re coming for the girls, not for the music. This list will give you more options than you’ll be able to handle on a weekend.

Preparty – start here at 11PM

Classic restaurant club with lots of tables and a smallish bar and dancefloor. Come here between 11pm and 12am when the concert is over and they start with the actual party. Even early in the night tons of sexy women here, who lean slightly older (25 and up).

The second floor of the Ugolek restaurant is an extra bar with dim lights and house music tunes. Very small and cozy with a slight hipster vibe but generally draws plenty of attractive women too. A bit slower vibe than Valenok.

Very cool, spread-out venue that has a modern library theme. Not always full with people but when it is, it’s brimming with top-tier women. Slow vibe here and better for grabbing contacts and moving on.

colony house tour opener

High-end: err on the side of being too early rather than too late because of face control.

Secret Room

Probably the top venue at the moment in Moscow . Very small but wildly popular club, which is crammed with tables but always packed. They do parties on Thursdays and Sundays as well. This club has a hip-hop/high-end theme, meaning most girls are gold diggers, IG models, and tattooed hip hop chicks. Very unfavorable logistics because there is almost no room no move inside the club but the party vibe makes it worth it. Strict face control.

Close to Secret Room and with a much more favorable and spacious three-part layout. This place attracts very hot women but also lots of ball busters and fakes that will leave you blue-balled. Come early because after 4am it starts getting empty fast. Electronic music.

A slightly kitsch restaurant club that plays Russian pop and is full of gold diggers, semi-pros, and men from the Caucasus republics. Thursday is the strongest night but that dynamic might be changing since Secret Room opened its doors. You can swoop here but it will be a struggle.

colony house tour opener

Mid-level: your sweet spot in terms of ease and attractiveness of girls for an average budget.

Started going downwards in 2018 due to lax face control and this might get even worse with the World Cup. In terms of layout one of the best Moscow nightclubs because it’s very big and bottle service gives you a good edge here. Still attracts lots of cute girls with loose morals but plenty of provincial girls (and guys) as well. Swooping is fairly easy here.

I haven’t been at this place in over a year, ever since it started becoming ground zero for drunken teenagers. Similar clientele to Icon but less chic, younger and drunker. Decent mainstream music that attracts plenty of tourists. Girls are easy here as well.

Sort of a Coyote Ugly (the real one in Moscow sucks) with party music and lots of drunken people licking each others’ faces. Very entertaining with the right amount of alcohol and very easy to pull in there. Don’t think about staying sober in here, you’ll hate it.

Artel Bessonitsa/Shakti Terrace

Electronic music club that is sort of a high-end place with an underground clientele and located between the teenager clubs Icon and Gipsy. Very good music but a bit all over the place with their vibe and their branding. You can swoop almost any type of girl here from high-heeled beauty to coked-up hipsters, provided they’re not too sober.

colony house tour opener

Afterparty: if by 5AM  you haven’t pulled, it’s time to move here.

Best afterparty spot in terms of trying to get girls. Pretty much no one is sober in there and savage gorilla game goes a long way. Lots of very hot and slutty-looking girls but it can be hard to tell apart who is looking for dick and who is just on drugs but not interested. If by 9-10am you haven’t pulled, it is probably better to surrender.

The hipster alternative for afterparties, where even more drugs are in play. Plenty of attractive girls there but you have to know how to work this type of club. A nicer atmosphere and better music but if you’re desperate to pull, you’ll probably go to Miks.

Weekday jokers: if you’re on the hunt for some sexy Russian girls during the week, here are two tips to make your life easier.

Chesterfield

Ladies night on Wednesdays means this place gets pretty packed with smashed teenagers and 6s and 7s. Don’t pull out the three-piece suit in here because it’s a “simpler” crowd. Definitely your best shot on Wednesdays.

If you haven’t pulled at Chesterfield, you can throw a Hail Mary and hit up Garage’s Black Music Wednesdays. Fills up really late but there are some cute Black Music groupies in here. Very small club. Thursday through Saturday they do afterparties and you have an excellent shot and swooping girls that are probably high.

Shishas Sferum

This is pretty much your only shot on Mondays and Tuesdays because they offer free or almost free drinks for women. A fairly low-class club where you should watch your drinks. As always the case in Moscow, there will be cute girls here on any day of the week but it’s nowhere near as good as on the weekend.

In a nutshell, that is all you need to know about where to meet Moscow girls in nightlife. There are tons of options, and it all depends on what best fits your style, based on the type of girls that you’re looking for.

Inside The Home Frank Lloyd Wright Designed For His Son

Released on 04/23/2024

[serene music] [birds chirping]

When your father's the most

celebrated architect in America,

the greatest gift he can give you is a house.

Frank Lloyd Wright designed this house

for his son David and daughter-in-law Gladys

using many of the same ideas

that he was building into the Guggenheim Museum.

Spirals are fascinating forms,

they can symbolize the infinite or longevity.

David and Gladys Wright, they both lived

to be more than 100-years-old.

At the David and Gladys Wright House,

the spiral really takes on a unique sense of longevity

as it moves from one generation, father,

to the next generation, son,

and even today as it moves between father and daughter,

working on this restoration.

[soft idyllic music]

Located in the Arcadia neighborhood of Phoenix, Arizona,

this neighborhood was once filled with orange groves.

Today it's a residential neighborhood.

It's a special place.

It's unlike anything else

that Frank Lloyd Wright did in the course of his career

and we're so excited to show it to you.

The entry to this house really begins here,

at the bottom of a spiral ramp.

Wright began exploring spiral forms

along with all of the other elementary geometries

that were part of his body of work in the 1920s.

[idyllic music continues]

This is long before we came up with ways to curve glass

and curve woodwork in a way

that was structurally sustainable.

And so what we see is this combination of polygon forms,

triangular ends for the wood framework, for the windows,

and even for the roof, set above the circular surfaces

of the building itself.

It's this interesting juxtaposition of forms

that's really a signature

of Frank Lloyd Wright's body of work.

This whole experience coming up the ramp,

it's this little journey that Wright's taking you on.

The movement through space is something

that Wright calls the continual becoming.

This idea that space is constantly

unfolding and revealing itself,

and you really see that as you climb up the ramp

and come up here to the entry.

Now that we're at the top of the ramp,

we see this beautiful landscape.

We're out in this bright sun

and Wright wants to create a juxtaposition,

so he's gonna take us in under a low ceiling

and sort of a shaded, darkened space.

[soft idyllic music continues]

Wright has this technique that he calls

compression and release,

being enveloping darker space,

and then opening up into a lighter, brighter,

more expansive space.

This is very similar to taking a walk through nature

where you might be walking on a forest path,

nature's embracing you,

and then suddenly you're in a clearing

where you're open to the sky,

there's bright light all around you.

It is an emotional journey that we take.

Much of the work on this house,

the delineation, the renderings,

and the design of the rug

were done by a Wright apprentice from China named Ling Po.

Ling came over from China in the 1940s

and worked with Wright

and worked at the Foundation for many decades

after Wright died in 1959.

The furniture is made of plywood, really humble material,

but in the mid-century, Wright gravitated to this material.

If you look at the edge detail,

what you see are the different layers of the plywood,

and instead of covering that up like most people would,

Wright exposes it and celebrates it.

He wants you to see not only how the furniture is made,

but indeed that the wood itself,

like the cement blocks from which the house is constructed,

could actually be quite beautiful.

Even these tables themselves have this unusual feature,

a little hole down the center

for this beautiful circular globe.

So again, the circle, the sphere,

the sense of festivity is always part

of every element of design of this house.

This fireplace, a beautiful cylinder tapering in.

In fact, this is the continuity

from one of the piers below,

tapering upward, from the ground all the way up,

past the roof and into the chimney.

But a beautiful circular fireplace,

a beautiful fireplace grate

that again reflects the circles, patterns of this house.

There's another important sense

of intergenerational continuity

that's reflected in this house.

Frank Lloyd Wright designs this house for his son David

and David's family.

Today, the current owners are Bing Hu,

who has brought his daughter, a newly minted architect,

into the restoration of this house.

I come to the US for the first time to study architecture,

and then a year later I went back to China, get my wife.

From there, our community,

also, my family grown, so we have our first daughter,

and then later on we have two more daughters.

It was only natural for me to want to study architecture.

As soon as I told my dad that,

I was expecting him to be so excited.

But he said, Don't do architecture. It's a hard life.

But of course as his daughter, I don't listen to him.

So I did exactly the opposite of that

and I studied architecture.

When this property,

Dave Gladys Wright House come to my attention,

a spec builder bought the property from the family

with the intention to demolish the house

and create two spec houses.

So the first I learned that is like we got to rescue this.

My dad called me

and asked me if I would consider leaving my job

to come work with him

to restore the David and Gladys Wright House.

It means a lot for my parents to come as Chinese immigrants

and sort of be here preserving the legacy

of American architecture as well.

[soft serene music]

This ceiling is constructed of Philippine mahogany.

It's a wood species that you can't get today.

Unfortunately, because the roof leaked

into this room for many years,

this mahogany ceiling became stained,

and because you can't get this wood anymore,

cleaning and removing that staining is a meticulous craft.

If any board gets destroyed,

you actually have to replace the whole ceiling,

and indeed all the wood in the house

because it's all one species.

So one of the things that I love about this restoration

is the very careful attention to detail.

Because the house hasn't been properly maintained,

especially in the most beautiful wood you can see.

If you see before, it was night and day difference.

When we started to dig, to uncover it,

there were like three or four layers

of spray foam insulation up there.

Anytime there was a big storm,

I think the owners were just like,

Go spray up another layer,

and hopefully it'll do it this time.

Embarking on this journey, it kind of felt like we were able

to uncover history of the past that wasn't written.

Beyond the look of the ceiling,

it also has a really interesting function.

Wright loved to connect interiors and exteriors.

We have a piano here in the room.

Wright loved the piano.

Everybody in his family was musical

and music was something that they gravitated to.

[birds chirping]

Well, how do you get your musical performances outdoors?

You create a ceiling that will reflect the sound

out through these doors

and down into the courtyard

where you might be gathering for a party

or just relaxing on a Sunday afternoon.

Wright had learned about acoustics

in his first apprenticeship in Chicago

with Dankmar Adler, one of the great acousticians

in American architectural history,

and he brought that into his practice and used it everywhere

but seldom with such dramatic effect

as you see in this house.

We've already experienced compression and release

in the entryway into the living room,

and now we're gonna go through another

somewhat compressed space, which is this hallway

that takes us from the central living space

to the primary bedroom of the house.

[soft enthralling music]

Another sense of release

after the compressed space of the hallway.

And once again, we have an emotional journey.

You also have this beautiful built-in banquette.

You'll notice that there's some storage underneath it.

No wasted space in a Frank Lloyd Wright House.

This is important, Wright often designs rooms

so that they have a different emotional impact

and a different sense of space

when you're standing or when you're sitting.

And when you sit in here, the views will be very different.

It may be hard to tell,

but we could actually start in one of those carports

and make a continuous spiral up the ramp, through the entry,

through the living room, down the hallway,

and into this bedroom

without ever breaking that continuous curve.

Let's go see the other room

that people are always curious about,

what we would call the kitchen,

but what Frank Lloyd Wright called the workspace.

So we're gonna take this journey back through the hallway.

Once again, we have the sense of surprise,

space is unfolding,

and even though we've been here before

and we know what's expected,

it's still the sense of seeing this room differently.

But as we come to the workspace,

I want you to first notice something special.

We have this cone that's tapering.

How do you have a door?

Well, you cut the door to meet the building.

Again, this wonderful little gesture,

but Wright has thought of everything.

Wright doesn't refer to these spaces as kitchens.

These are spaces where you do your work

to prepare for your guests.

It's not like kitchens of today that become social spaces,

but truly a space that's just designed for the work.

And in this case, also a little table for the family.

And a little trapezoidal trash can

that fits perfectly into that space.

It's one of those features that just delights people

when they visit the house.

You also see this angled line,

this ramp that takes us to the roof.

He's actually revealing the structure

of the building, in this space,

that there's this continuity that's provided.

Up here on the rooftop terrace,

we can really see Wright's intention,

how he connects the building with the landscape.

Out to our southeast, we see the Papago Buttes.

And behind me in the other direction,

the head of the camel of Camelback Mountain.

By firmly centering this building

between these two landmarks that nature provided,

Wright gives us the sense of being part of this world

and not merely on it, but at one with it.

You'll notice that we're actually walking under the house

because the house is elevated.

[gentle music]

This courtyard is an outdoor room,

but it wasn't just a room to gather in,

maybe have picnic in,

it also originally had a pool.

Also because the pool itself

being constructed out of concrete block,

slowly over time begins to disintegrate,

something that Wright didn't anticipate

when he built the house.

So today we just have the memory of the pool reflected here.

When you stand in the middle of this courtyard

on this central paver,

you can hear sound reverberating

from all around you. [voice reverberates strongly]

It's a space that will capture

what we hear from inside the house

to give you the sense that you're not outdoors,

but really you're just in another room of the house.

[soft idyllic music] [birds chirping]

David Wright worked for the Besser Manufacturing Company

and they made concrete block molds.

And so David insisted that his company's molds

and concrete block be used for the construction

and design of this house.

And for Wright, concrete block wasn't simply

an industrial material.

He saw it as elevated.

And this particular block, I think he really enjoyed.

And so you'll see that at the end

of wherever there was a concrete slab,

he included this decorative block with the circular motif

and then this piece coming out of it.

It also shows something

that Wright really enjoyed about working with concrete,

which is called in architecture terms, plasticity,

meaning that it's moldable.

[enthralling music]

You'd think that when your father is the architect,

building this house would be easy, but it wasn't.

All the usual challenges between architect

and client showed up,

everything from budget

to not having the right foreman.

In fact, at one point David writes his father

and asks for some changes and says,

Dad, can the house be only 90% Frank Lloyd Wright,

and 10% David and Gladys Wright?

And Wright said, You're making your poor old father tired,

but accommodated his son's wishes.

At the end of the day, what we see in between them

is the exchange of gifts reflected in correspondence.

It is been a really interesting experience

and cherished experience too.

Working with my dad,

I feel like I've learned so much about him

and it's explained just seeing him at work

and how he makes his decisions.

Even today I was thinking about,

I'm so annoyed that my dad is getting these window washers

to come the same day we're filming this video.

And I realized he did that because it's the desert.

So if we did this two days in advance,

they would've been completely covered in dust. [chuckles]

So little things like that have shown me

that my dad is really the smartest person I know.

I saw since I come here,

I really wanna work in the skyscrapers,

you know, in New York City,

you know, in Chicago, working for a big architect.

So after the years, I think that this is my destiny.

The plan for the future of this property,

I want it to become my architectural design studio.

I can open my door to let my client come.

So that's kind of indirect way to welcome the public

to able to see this masterpiece.

I feel really lucky that

we have a place like this home to come back to

and that we'll get to enjoy it for many generations to come.

Tour Itinerary

With the 1000-year history, Russia has had a rich portfolio of conflicts, battles, wars. On this Soviet tour, we'll talk about various wars that happened in Russia, focusing on WWII.

Mother Russia has undergone a lot in its long life. Since ancient times, Russian rulers have taken nearly all political power into their own hands. By the beginning of the 20th century, the Russian oppositional movement was deadly set for the total destruction of the ever-lasting tsarist regime. All of Russia got involved in the bloody revolution of 1917 in an effort to abolish the current state of the government and gain freedom for the ordinary people.

You will learn about the every-day life of the Soviet people during the bloody Second World War with the Nazis, including the legendary Battle for Moscow, the 900-day siege of Leningrad, the hardships that local citizens went through, the consequences of the war and the scars it left on the Soviet people, as well as why the Cold War happened and what was the fundamental reason.

Our mission on the Soviet Russia tour is to find out

  • - How much this 1917 revolution cost the people;
  • - Whether they actually got the freedom they wanted and was it worth it;
  • - What happened over the next 74 years;
  • - Who were the main political communist leaders of the Soviet Union;
  • - Were Russians happy and satisfied with the Soviet Union?

Our tour itinerary will lie in most Soviet areas of Moscow, which are quite spread throughout the city, as very few of them are left. You can choose how much you are ready to live this Soviet life on a 5, 7 or 10-hour tour. Depending on the duration of the tour, you will see part or all of the places below:

If you want to extend the tour, you are welcome to do so by paying $20/extra hour in cash on the tour.

Time stands still in Red Square. The Red Square is the heart of Moscow (and whole Russia). Saint Basil's Cathedral will make your mouth drop. If it is from May-October, have a cocktail on the outside terrace and simply people watch! The massive square offers so much to enjoy.

Lenin's Mausoleum

The burial place of one of the most influential communist leaders in the world.

Revolution Square Metro Station

Rub the Soviet dog's nose for good luck and admire the 76 bronze sculptures, devoted to the passionate, strong-willed and patriotic Soviet people.

Poklonnaya Hill

The highest point in Moscow, where Napoleon waited for keys of the city.

All-Russian Exhibition Center (VVC)

With its giant arch, amazing fountain, and huge pavilions of different Soviet Republics.

Victory Park Metro Station

The deepest undeground station in Moscow and one of the deepest in the world.

Victory Park

For an open-air museum as big as 135 ha (1 350 000 square meters), Victory park sure doens't lack diversity. The park is dedicated to the Russian victory in WWII, and was laid out in 1995 in commemoration of 50-year anniversary of victory.

Stalin had planned for its construction already in 1941, being sure of victory from the very start of the war.

Greeting Hill

The highest points in Moscow (172 meters), where Napoleon waited for keys of Moscow in vain.

Triumphal Arch

Stunning monument consisting of 12 cast-iron columns, each 12 meters high, and weighing 16 tons. Built to mark Russia's victory over Napoleon in 1812.

Museum of the Great Patriotic War

In the city that is as much about wars as it is about victories, there is one essential stopover - the Museum of the Great Patriotic War (that's what WWII is called in Russia). Must-do for those wishing to understand Russia's past and look at the whole war from the different perspective - Russian.

The museum is not for the faint-hearted. Here you can see films about the partisan experience, the scenes that will haunt you forever (no subtitles, but they are not necessary).

Museum of Contemporary History (from outside only)

We'll have a glance at Russian life of the XX century in the  Museum of Contemporary History , which houses bits of everything from Russian history of XXth century: from English club to a storage of Stalin's presents.

Memorial to the Holocaust,

devastating and breath-taking!

Unleash your inner spy. Highly recommended  Bunker-42 ,  Cold War Museum , explore the place where Khrushchev lived during the Cuban Crisis. Go down 18 floors to a gigantic bunker under Moscow that was designed to withstand a nuclear attack. Watch a short film about the severity of the Cold War. If you lived through the Cold War, you will hardly believe it is possible that you are in Bunker 42!

Wander through  Sparrow Hills  and climb up to the highest observation deck of Moscow with stunning views of all seven Stalin’s skyscrapers, including  Moscow State University . After that, experience the excitement of taking a  river cruise  on the Moscow river and catch the views of the Kremlin and Soviet times.

Moscow: City Sightseeing by Car/Bus

Visiting a new city is akin to going on a first date, it is something you will never forget. Many people imagine Moscow as just a bunch of sporadic landmarks: Red Square, the Kremlin, Lenin’s Mausoleum and GUM. There is so much more to this wonderful city than that and even though we only have a few hours, we will do all we can to show you everything we know and love about our capital in one fell swoop. We will take you on a journey through the ages, from centuries ago, right up to the modern day, soaking in the sights of this vast and bustling metropolis. Bright, luxurious and both ancient and modern at the same time, Moscow invites you on a date you’ll never forget!

On our sightseeing bus tour of the city, you will see:

  • The wonderfully historic city centre and its unique museums, magnificent cathedrals, the exquisite Chambers of the Romanov Boyars and of course, the famous towering red brick walls of the Kremlin, The charming beauty of the Alexander Garden awaits the capital's guests - a lush green oasis in the midst of the glass and concrete clad metropolis, basking in the etherial aura emanating from the whitewashed stone walls of the restored Cathedral of Christ the Saviour, the world- renowned fairytale onion domes of St. Basil's Cathedral and other impressive monumental buildings such as the library built in Lenin's honour - the Russian State Library - and the State Duma.
  • The Lubyanka KGB headquarters is notorious to members of older generations and although nowadays, the face of the secret police has changed dramatically, the looming enigmatic building on the waterfront maintains its aura of mystery, shrouded in a variety of murky rumours and dark myths. Then, there’s another of Moscow's main attractions - the marvellous Bolshoi Theatre, yew simply cant leave Moscow without taking in its breathtaking architecture. Engrained in the fabric of Russia's cultural heritage, virtuoso performers such as prima ballerina Galina Ulanova, opera singer Feodor Chaliapin and pianist, composer and conductor Sergei Rachmaninoff once stood centre stage of this vaunted institution.
  • The memorial complex on Poklonnaya Hill was constructed in the glory and honour of our heroes who defended our nation in the many crucial battles of the Great Patriotic War (WWII). This is a place that embodies a particularly acute and inextricable link between older ancf younger generations. Moving on to the Moscow International Business Centre, not dubbed ‘Moscow City' for nothing, a true glimpse of the future in the present. This incredible, rather jaw-dropping project in the capital has shown that Moscow has come to accept the age of the skyscraper. Finally, the stunning views from the observation deck at Sparrow Hills will leave professional and amateur photographers alike itching to capture them. How could one resist?

April 22, 2024 - Protests at Columbia and other schools escalate

Matt Egan, Alicia Wallace and Chandelis Duster

The Massachusetts Institute of Technology says it is 'determining next steps'

From CNN's Jillian Sykes

The Massachusetts Institute of Technology issued a statement Monday regarding tents on its campus.

"MIT officials are aware of the tents, and are determining next steps with a focus on ensuring campus is physically safe and fully functioning. MIT Police were on scene throughout the night and will continue to be present."

Robert Kraft says he is willing to support The Kraft Center at the university

From CNN's Chandelis Duster

Robert Kraft, billionaire owner of the NFL’s New England Patriots and backer of Columbia University, on Monday said he is still willing to support The Kraft Center at the school that supports Jewish students, calling it “a haven of safety.”

Kraft, an alumnus of the university, told CNN’s Jake Tapper on “The Lead” that he loves the school and “we have to have accountability.”

“There are both professors and students within the university who say things that I think cross the line and there should be accountability. I believe in free speech. Say whatever you want but pay the consequences. And don't have your face covered. I don't think that should be allowed,” he said.

“I can’t believe in New York City at Columbia University Jewish students are afraid to go to classes in the United States of America in 2024. It’s amazing to me and horrible,” Kraft also said.

Asked where he drew the line at Columbia University regarding both pro-Palestine and pro-Israel protests and what he finds objectionable, he said “there is a lack of education on the situation” happening in the Middle East.

“I’m concerned about America and what’s going on in this country. And to keep it open and free for all people of all backgrounds to do as they wish,” he said.

Asked if he has confidence in Columbia University’s president, Minouche Shafik, he said he thinks she is “very well intentioned” and said “we have to look at what goes on with faculty.”

Columbia faculty stage walk-out in solidarity with students

From CNN's John Towfighi

Hundreds of people gathered on Low Plaza Monday afternoon as Columbia University faculty delivered speeches in support of the student protesters who were suspended and arrested Thursday.

Faculty who spoke denounced university president Minouche Shafik’s decision to authorize the New York Police Department to remove protesters from campus and demanded all legal and disciplinary charges be dismissed and expunged from students' records.

Faculty held signs that read, “Hands off our students,” and “End student suspensions now.” Some faculty donned their academic regalia and wore sashes that read, “We support students.”

Speeches were met with cheers and claps from the crowd, as well as chants for Shafik to resign.

Christopher Brown, a professor of history, said, “I’m here because I am so concerned about what is happening at this university, with where we are now and with where we are going. Thursday April 18, 2024, will be remembered as a shameful day in Columbia history.”

“The president’s decision to send riot police to pick up peaceful protesters on our campus was unprecedented, unjustified, disproportionate, divisive and dangerous,” Brown said.

US Rep. Ilhan Omar, whose daughter Isra Hirsi was among the protesters arrested Thursday , posted on X that while she’s glad to see faculty demonstrate in solidarity with students, she wants the protests to focus on Gaza.

"On Thursday, Columbia arrested and suspended its students who were peacefully protesting and have now ignited a nationwide Gaza Solidarity movement. This is more than the students hoped for and I am glad to see this type of solidarity. But to be clear, this about the genocide in Gaza and the attention has to remain on that," Omar wrote.

NYC Mayor condemns "vile" and "disgusting" rhetoric at college campuses

From CNN's Alicia Wallace

New York City Mayor Eric Adams on Monday condemned “vile” and “disgusting” rhetoric being used at campuses such as Columbia University, where students are holding protests over the Israel-Hamas War.

Adams told CNN’s Jake Tapper that he supports First Amendment rights but said law enforcement officials are on the ready if any of that speech goes too far or if there’s an imminent threat to people or property.

"That is one of the fundamental rights we hold dear as Americans: The right to protest," Adams said on CNN's "The Lead." "What we have seen playing out on many of our college campuses, and particularly Columbia University, is hate. We’re seeing vile language being used."

Adams noted that he can feel the "duality of this moment" and how the events of the past six months are weighing heavily on Jewish and Palestinian New Yorkers. He added that the police escorts of Jewish students through campus were reminiscent of the Army soldiers who escorted nine Black students into a high school in Little Rock, Arkansas, nearly 67 years ago.

"There is no place for hate in this city," he said.

New York Police Department officers have a “large presence” surrounding Columbia but have remained off the campus grounds at the request of the school’s administration, NYPD deputy commissioners said earlier on Monday.

Adams told Tapper that the NYPD’s commissioner of legal matter is monitoring the protests for any speech that violates law. Additionally, police officers will take "appropriate action" and go on private property if there’s an "imminent threat."

Protesters gather at The New School in New York City

From CNN's Elisabeth Buchwald

The New School students and pro-Palestinian supporters rally outside The New School University Center building, Monday, April 22, 2024, in New York.

Protesters have gathered at The New School, located near the Chelsea area of the New York City borough of Manhattan.

An encampment of four tents was set up in the lobby of the building that houses auditoriums, a cafeteria and a library. Roughly 75 students, and other people who have The New School IDs, gathered inside the building.

"Disclose, divest, we will not stop, we will not stop, we will not rest," was repeatedly chanted.

Outside the building, protesters from the school, as well as outsiders, joined in chants from the sidewalk.

There is a stark difference between the inside and outside of Columbia University's campus

From CNN's Ramishah Maruf

A pro-Palestine rally is held at the steps of Lowe Library on the grounds of Columbia University today in New York City.

There’s a stark difference between the inside of Columbia University's campus and the outside, where there are protesters gathered on the street.

The encampment is only open to those affiliated with campus. Only those with a Columbia ID can enter the campus gates. Inside the encampment, programs include teach-ins, poetry readings and film screenings. Some students are quietly finishing assignments, while others are painting posters.

Elsewhere around campus, students are eating and completing assignments. Many students take graduation pictures at this time, and some are in graduation gowns walking down Broadway. Risers are set up for an upcoming commencement ceremony.

Other students are holding large American flags underneath Butler Library.

Pro-Palestinian and Pro-israel face off outside of Columbia University which is occupied by Pro-Palestinian protesters in New York on April 22, 2024.

But the students can still hear the tension that is taking place yards away at the university gates. There is a gathering of pro-Palestinian protesters, who in the early afternoon were chanting “I believe that we will win” and “Long Live the Intifada.” There was a smaller group of pro-Israeli protesters, who chanted back “Down with Hamas” and “Victory to Israel.” A line of New York Police officers were monitoring the street.

What it's like inside the Columbia University encampment

Students protest in support of Palestinians on Columbia University campus, as protests continue inside and outside the university in New York City on April 22.

The inside of the encampment is quiet – most of the noise comes from protestors outside the gates of Columbia University's campus, who are chanting “I believe that we will win” and “Long live the Intifada."

It was a sunny day on campus, and in one corner, students were painting posters. One person strummed a stringed instrument, and other students are reading books or on their laptops finishing assignments. Others have donated provisions, ranging from a table of snacks to hygiene products. There was also a pile of blankets.

“We’ve just been trying to keep students mobilized and keep pushing for divestment,” Dalia, a first-year student at Columbia College, told CNN. “We are a very mobilized student body and a very unified student body. Hundreds of people have been in and out of the encampment.”

CNN agreed not to publish her surname due to safety concerns.

She said the students at the campus “refuse to be complicit in the genocide, the apartheid, and the occupation of Palestine.”

There are strict community guidelines for the encampment. One rule says not to share names or details of anyone met in camp, and asking for permission before photographing or taking video.

The encampment is filled with dozens and dozens of tents, from students to neighboring Barnard College staff. Today’s encampment program included an Earth Day performance, poetry reading and a Dabka lesson, a traditional dance from the Arab region. Prior program events included dance performances from different cultures.

Democratic House members tour Columbia campus

Democratic Reps. Jared Moskowitz of Florida, Josh Gottheimer of New Jersey, Dan Goldman of New York and Kathy Manning of North Carolina, who are all Jewish, spoke at a news conference Monday after touring Columbia University’s campus.

"We saw it firsthand as we walked past the encampments on the university's main lawn full of protesters spewing incendiary antisemitic hate and vitriol. Many aren't even Columbia students I've been told. Their campaign of intimidation is sickening and shocking and as the White House said yesterday, ‘echoes the rhetoric of Hamas terrorists,'" Gottheimer said.

He also criticized Columbia University leadership, saying, “toothless combinations from administrators aren't going to stop the anarchy we’re seeing.”

“The only way to do it is with deeds, not words,” Gottheimer said. “Colleges have a legal obligation under Title VI of the Civil Rights Act to provide students, including Jews and Muslims, a school environment free from discrimination and harassment based on race color or national origin. Yet just feet from here, Jewish students are being verbally and even physically assaulted.”

Gottheimer continued, “To the administrators of Columbia and beyond, here are our demands: Stop the double talk and start acting now. Discipline harassers, restore civility on this campus, encourage peaceful constructive dialogue.”

He also gave a message for students: “While the leadership of Columbia may be failing you, we will not. We will do everything in our power to keep you safe and do everything in Washington we can to make sure that you feel welcome at this university or any university across the United States of America. And Columbia University, if they don't follow through, will pay the price.”

Goldman said he was "encouraged" the Columbia University president issued guidelines about additional security, calling it a "very important first step" and criticized what is happening on campus.

"That is unacceptable for a university, that is unacceptable for an academic institution. There is no question that everyone has a First Amendment right to speak out in this country and that must be preserved," Goldman said. "But a university and all universities have an obligation to maintain the safety and security of their students from all backgrounds."

Manning said university leadership should "do more to keep Jewish students safe and to re-establish an atmosphere in which all students can learn, study and participate safely in campus life."

"Columbia must also move forward with its promised efforts to teach its students and its faculty about the nature and history and dangers of antisemitism. It must ensure that Columbia professors are not encouraging and spreading antisemitism," Manning said.

"I call on the US Department of Education and the US Department of Justice to work with the White House to ensure that all universities take steps necessary to keep Jewish students and faculty safe. I also call on Congress to enact legislation to implement the steps outlined in the US national strategy to counter antisemitism, to address the scourge of antisemitism which is a threat to the foundations of our democracy," she said.

President Joe Biden condemns antisemitism on campus

From CNN's Kevin Liptak

U.S. President Joe Biden delivers remarks during a visit to Prince William Forest Park to commemorate Earth Day in Triangle, Virginia, today.

President Joe Biden decried antisemitic protests around college campuses Monday and said his administration was working to combat anti-Jewish hatred.

"I condemn the antisemitic protests, that’s why I’ve set up a program to deal with that," Biden said when questioned about the events at Columbia University in New York.

"I also condemn those who don’t understand what’s going on with the Palestinians," he said, without expanding upon what he meant.

Biden was speaking after an Earth Day event in Prince William Forest Park in Triangle, Virginia.

When asked whether Columbia's president should resign, Biden appeared to mishear: "I didn’t know that. I'll have to find out more," he said.
