Counting Crows lead singer Adam Duritz on huge bill friend got from famous Dublin nightclub
Counting Crows star Adam Duritz spoke to Dublin Live about time spent in Ireland and the band's upcoming European tour
- 14:51, 2 AUG 2022
- Updated 15:57, 2 AUG 2022
Counting Crows lead singer Adam Duritz reminisced on the 'drunken nights' in a popular Dublin nightclub as he reflected on time spent in Ireland during the band's impressive career.
The group, known for hits such as Accidentally In Love, Mr Jones, Colorblind and A Long December, play Dublin's 3Arena Tuesday, October 18 as part of a string of European shows.
Adam spoke to Dublin Live about his love for performing, touring Europe and his memories of being in Ireland, including nights in Lillie's Bordello in Dublin.

"I've played 3Arena when it was the Point Depot, I don't even know how many times. Many gigs at the Olympia and tonne at the Point Depot," he said.
"Our tour manager is from Cork and he's been with us since April of 1994. Ireland was always like a second home. The very first time we went there, we were surrounded by friends and family.
"Even when we weren't big, even the people who came to see us were so passionate about us. Anywhere we were in Ireland, it was always so amazing."
Revealing that the band had many a "drunken" night at Lillie's Bordello, which used to be open on Grafton Street , Adam told us a hilarious story involving a huge bill at the famous club.
"One of my favourite memories of it was we had a long night there after playing Slane one year," he said.
"Somehow we ditched our piano player and he ended up paying the bill on his credit card and when we got home from the tour, the credit card bill came and his wife nearly killed him because she saw this huge bill from some place called Lillie's Bordello and she thought he had been in a whore house.
"You can imagine if your husband came home and there was a several thousand dollar bill from Lillie's Bordello."
Counting Crows have already been hitting the road in America with their The Butter Miracle Tour.
Speaking about bringing the tour to Europe, Adam revealed: "This tour has a few places we've never played before in Europe which is pretty bizarre at this point in our career.
"European tours are kind of the thing that makes it magic. You can always imagine playing a gig in your hometown or around America. But the idea that your music might travel to foreign lands... that's the thing that makes it really like, I'm a rock star."
Adam also explained how he has found himself "choked up" when playing to audiences following the pandemic .
He said: "This last year or so, I've been really knocked out by it.
"I don't know if I ever took it for granted before but it I don't think it ever really hit me like this."

Counting Crows is an American rock band that hails from the San Francisco Bay area in CA, U.S. They formed in 1991 and have sold more than 20 million records worldwide.
The group was originally comprised of acoustic duo Adam Duritz and guitarist David Bryson. They spent their early musical career playing coffee shop gigs in San Francisco. The two were interested in recording demos as a band and additional members bassist Matt Malley, keyboardist Charlie Gillingham, and drummer Steve Bowman completed the beginnings of what would be Counting Crows. The band’s name alludes to the British nursery rhyme “One For Sorrow.”
The year 1993 became a turning point for the band. First they were asked to perform at the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony as a last minute substitute for Van Morrison. Later that year Counting Crows was signed to Geffen Records and released their debut album “August and Everything After.” They supported the album by joining tours with Bob Dylan, Los Lobos, and the Cranberries. The album’s single “Mr. Jones” exploded on the airwaves and the video became widely requested on MTV. The album stayed on the charts for an impressive 93 weeks starting in 1994. The acknowledgement led them to tour with the Rolling Stones during that same year.
With the addition of drummer Ben Mize and guitarist Dan Vickrey, Counting Crows released their sophomore album “Recovering the Satellites” in 1995. It reached No. 1 in 1996 and songs like “A Long December” and “Have You Seen Me Lately” became hits. Counting Crows has had success in the film industry. Their song “Accidentally in Love” was featured on the animated film “Shrek 2”’ soundtrack and they received nominations for a Grammy, Oscar, and Golden Globe Award for their contribution.
Counting Crows cites Van Morrison, R.E.M., Mike + The Mechanics, Nirvana, Bob Dylan, and Nirvana as their musical influences.
Live reviews
This gig was marketed as part of Bluesfest and thus you got 3 bands for the price of one. The opening act was The White Buffalo. When they took to the stage there weren't many people in the arena, but those that were there got a real treat. The White Buffalo are a 3 piece band playing a mix of blues and ballads and went down well with those that were there to see them. Really enjoyed their set.
Then after a change of stage set Alison Krauss came on. Alison has a beautiful voice complimented by the two members of the The Cox Family. Alison also plays fiddle, and the crowd were treated to a mixture of country and folk music.
Then the headline act. I was disappointed to see the O2 Arena had not sold out this gig, especially as the Crows played two sell out concerts there back in 2014. Also the Arena had curtained off the upper tier so the O2 was probably only really half full, if that. With the London gig following the Dublin gig these were the only two venues on the tour for the UK and Ireland so I was surprised not to see a bigger crowd.
No matter, the Crows were playing the last night of their worldwide tour celebrating 25 years and didn't disappoint. This concert leant heavily on the August And Everything album with songs like Mr Jones, Omaha, Rain King, Round Here, Raining in Baltimore and Murder of One. They also played a Teenage Fanclub number that they usually play in the warm-up earlier in the day, and a favourite of mine, Mrs Potter's Lullaby. Adam likes to chat to the audience and explained the background to nearly every song. As is quite often the case the the sound mix was not quite right for the opening numbers and Adam's vocals were slightly drowned out by the instruments, but once the mix was right the Crows really got into their stride. They finished with Holiday in Spain and you came away feeling you had your money's worth. It was the first time in 25 years I had seen the Crows live and was determined no to miss them this time they came to the UK. I thoroughly enjoyed the show.

The lack of response to my invite to go see Counting Crows on Thursday night wasn’t surprising. Even the lure of comp’d tickets wouldn’t budge those in my social circle. There is a part of me that understands this, but I do not understand confusing Counting Crows with the likes of Gin Blossoms, Train or (uggghh) Hootie & The Blowfish. A compilation album comprised of the best songs songs from those bands wouldn’t hold a torch to August and Everything After. If you hit puberty within a decade of that debut album, you have no excuse not to know every word to every song. I’m not saying it’s a groundbreaking work of staggering genius, it’s just one of those albums that defined a time. So, when Adam Duritz took the stage, with his ridiculous mess of mangy dreads, and sang “Step out the front door like a ghost into the fog…“, I knew I made the right decision by rolling solo. Opening with “Round Here” was somewhat of a false promise as to how much August material would be performed on this particular night, but even though “Omaha” and “Perfect Blue Buildings” were glaring holes in the setlist, I am happy to report that Counting Crows sound as good as they did when I saw them in ’96. “Mr. Jones”, an extended “Rain King”, and even a few tracks from the underrated Recovering the Satellites were all highlights of the night, but even the new stuff didn’t sound like it was coming from a band hanging on to a ledge above obscurity. Sure, their latest is an album of covers, so it does help that you’d know the songs even if you hadn’t listened to it, but I have to say Duritz and crew put on a hell’va show. A show they should be proud of 20 years into their career. I am bummed I missed all the openers, but when they all came back out for a collaborative “Hangingaround”, it put a cap on an excellent evening on the Rocks.
I'm a pretty big fan of the Crows, and I attended the show with five other people, including my wife, who were not as into them as I am, so I couldn't help but think of how they were experiencing the show...
I was quite disappointed in their song selection, leaving out at least 4 or 5 songs that my friends would have been mostly familiar with, and that I was really hoping to hear. As 'Rain King' came to close out the show, I knew that it was the last song, so I gave up on hoping to hear them, but as everyone loves 'Rain King', we all stood up to get into it, and It then felt almost like a f.u. as Adam erratically changed the timing of all the versus, making you look stupid if you tried to sing along to it (I hate it when singers do that).
The most perplexing concert moment that I ever experienced was when they came out for their first encore, and they played 'Palisades Park', which is a 13 minute opus from their latest album. This was their encore?? Nobody knows that song. Even the hardcore fans who may love that song had to be distracted by the droves of people that were filing out of the venue. It resembled a sports arena when the home team is getting blown out in the 4th quarter. The second encore saw them bringing a whole bunch of extra people (un-introduced) onto the stage, and it felt like the whole show was only intended for them and their friends. The energy for the overall show fell flat. I am not interested in seeing them again.
Going to watch a Counting Crows show will transport you back to the early 90s...in a good way. Adam Duritz and his signature hairdo will take you on a mystical, musical journey through time, leaving you smiling and happy and probably sweaty at the end of it. Counting Crows know their audience and make sure to play the songs that you came to hear. Don't worry, you won't leave without listening to the classic hits from August and Everything After (Mr. Jones, Round Here, etc.). I mean, that's why you came to the show, right? They don't want a riot.
Luckily their newer stuff is just as catchy and you will find yourself humming along (or attempting to sing along, like I do) and dancing in a way that people do at concerts that are mostly attended by those who were fortunate enough to get a babysitter for the night. After a few domestic beers everyone starts to dance a little bit. Not to mention that after a few beers every song that is played will sound like the "BEST SONG EVER!!!" And that's what a Counting Crows show has got going for it, familiarity and domestic beers. If you're over 30, you should check out one of their shows. If you're under 30, see if any of your parents' friends need a babysitter so they can go.
I attended the gig @ PNC Center in Holmdel. the crowd was a bit rough and there were teens who were annoying in front of us. we had lawn seats. my friend karina really was spent after that ordeal. she didn't talk the rest of the evening home. Citizen Cope was in great form. CC were a bit underwhelming. it just didn't resonate for me. i don't know what to expect from the audience this time and time again. Anyhow, sorry to disappoint. adam and co played the hits and Holiday in Spain was the encore. i just wish my friend enjoyed herself. the potheads can stay home. i've got nothing against it. i'm just not in college anymore. 40 years on. i'd like to recommend the CC but not at this venue.
"round here stays up late"
The VA beach show was AMAZING!!! The Counting Crows has and will be our favorite band forever. The prolific songwriting coupled with awesome harmonies and tight backing instrumental work is continually jaw dropping. Thank you, Adam, for letting us into your world for a few moments while talking about the inspiration for some of your songs. Here’s to another 25 years!! Can’t wait for the next album and every one to follow!!!!
I love the counting crows and have been listening to them since the 90s. I have never seen them live before and was really excited until they got in to about their 3rd song when I realized how talkie he is while he is singing. At one point he had talked or changed every one of their songs which kinda sucked. I wasn't very impressed with his stage presence and style of singing, I will just have to stick to the radio versions.
Great gig on a dry summer evening in Dublin (a rare alignment of events).
The set list was a good mix of favourites and the latest album material.
It is always interesting to hear how they play older songs which they will have re-interpreted after having played them so much. It keeps the audience on their toes when they try to sing along (something an Irish audience will always do).
I've been a big fan since I was very young, but i'm sad to say this will almost certainly be the last time I see them live. Adam sounds nothing like he used to and there is seemingly little effort put into compensating for the decline in quality with additional effort and or set design. This band is a shell of what they were a decade ago and it's a damn shame to see them go out this way.
The Counting Crows cancelled the show in Paris because one of the band members was 'physically ill'. One day later they played at a sold out venue in Amsterdam and played 23(!!) songs. Was it really the illness or just that the concert in Paris wasn't sold out. This was the second time that they cancelled a concert in Paris. I'm completely done with the Counting Crows!
