Some people see an ocean and they’re like… “You know what, I’ve gotta cross it. Let’s see what’s on the other side.” If you’re an explorer, it’s just what you do. Today we know exactly what’s where (thanks, maps!) but making the journey still matters, and the spirit of discovery lives on in a Transpacific Carnival cruise. If white sand and turquoise waters are your style, choose an itinerary featuring islands whose names equal “exotic” — Fiji, Tahiti, Hawaii. Or go for a vacation that gets you deep into destinations as diverse as Alaska and Japan… with a little Indonesia and Philippines on the side. Either way, this Pacific Ocean crossing will give you plenty of epic names to cross off your travel to-do list.

Helpful Tips Before You Go

We sail to the Philippines in the months of December and January. This is an ideal time to visit since the tropical weather is still hot, but not stifling, and it’s before the rainy season begins. Since the weather is hot and humid, you’ll want to pack light, breathable clothing in natural fibers like cotton and linen. The style of dress is generally more conservative in the Philippines than you may be used to in the U.S. and other countries, so keep that in mind when packing.

Don’t forget to pack for the other ports you’ll be visiting during your Philippines cruise. Most will require similar clothing, but if you head farther north and plan to venture into any mountainous regions while in port, you’ll likely want some warmer layers.

The ports you’ll visit depend on the itinerary you choose. You can cruise to the Philippines on one of our Vietnam, Philippines, and Hong Kong itineraries, where you’ll sail between Hong Kong and Singapore, or cruise roundtrip from Singapore. Along the way, you’ll visit the beautiful Philippines cruise ports of call as well as cities in Vietnam. You’ll also have an overnight port of call in both Singapore and Hong Kong. On the roundtrip itinerary from Singapore that sails to the Philippines and back to Singapore, you’ll have an overnight in Hong Kong, and you’ll visit Malaysia and China.

Breakdancing Raygun, Tom Cruise's closing ceremony stunt and the most meme-able moments from the 2024 Paris Olympics

T he 2024 Summer Olympics might have come to a close, but we'll always have Paris — and the hilarious memes the Games left behind. From Bob the Cap Catcher to LeBron James as George Washington, here’s a look at some of the most viral moments to come out of the Paris Games.

Breakdancing breaks the internet

Rachael Gunn — aka Raygun — became an overnight sensation when footage of her Olympic breakdancing routine hit social media. Breaking was the only new sport to be added to this year's Summer Olympics.

When Raygun, the 36-year-old Australian who has a PhD in cultural studies, faced off against U.S. breaker Logistx, her performance took off online, giving rise to an onslaught of memes.

Tom Cruise being Tom Cruise

In one of the most anticipated moments of the Olympics closing ceremony, Tom Cruise leapt off of the roof of the Stade de France , grabbed the Olympic flag, hopped on the back of a motorcycle, then (in a prerecorded segment) dove out of a plane — completing the most Tom Cruise stunt ever. But even when he was just being a spectator in the crowd, Cruise made waves online.

Medal-biting confusion

Chinese gymnast Zhou Yaqin won the internet's heart when footage of her podium confusion went viral.

While posing for photos with her silver medal, Zhou, 18, noticed that her fellow balance beam medalists — Italian gymnasts Alice D’Amato, who won gold, and Manila Esposito, who took bronze — were taking their ceremonial medal chomp. Clearly unfamiliar with the tradition, Zhou brought the medal to her mouth — and thus, a wholesome meme was born.

LeBron James crossing the Delaware

During the opening ceremony, basketball legend LeBron James stood at the bow of the boat filled with U.S. athletes, an American flag proudly billowing in his hand as one of Team USA’s flag bearers.

The internet immediately drew a connection to Emanuel Leutze’s 1851 painting Washington Crosses the Delaware, and a meme was born.

Bob the Cap Catcher

When U.S. swimmer Emma Weber lost her swimming cap during the women’s 100-meter breaststroke preliminary race, the internet rallied around the lifeguard in a Speedo who got it back for her, dubbing him Bob the Cap Catcher.

The Muffin Man

Norwegian swimmer and three-time Olympian Henrik Christiansen gained internet fame not for his swimming performance, but for his love of chocolate muffins served in the Olympic Village — earning him the title of Muffin Man, which he proudly accepted.

Stephen Nedoroscik is Clark Kent

Pommel horse hero Stephen Nedoroscik immediately captured the hearts and imaginations of viewers at home, launching a slew of memes across social media during his time at the Games. His transformation on and off the gymnastics floor became the stuff of meme legends.

Sharpshooters gain infinite aura points

Olympic shooting achieved a new level of popularity when footage of Yusuf Dikeç of Turkey and Kim Ye-ji of South Korea hit the internet. The two looked effortlessly cool as they competed, which gave rise to an onslaught of John Wick and Pulp Fiction comparisons , along with anime fan art imaginings.

The two competitors were also contrasted in memes, as the sleek, precise look of Ye-ji was put up against Dikeç’s cool, casual vibe.

The Olympic Baguette

When French pole vaulter Anthony Ammirati tried to clear a height of 5.7 meters, a certain appendage got in the way, knocking the bar to the ground, and earning the athlete the title of the Olympic Baguette.

Sponsored by cheese

Italian gymnast Giorgia Villa became the envy of the internet when news of her Parmigiano-Reggiano sponsorship hit social media. Photos of Villa cradling a giant cheese wheel and doing a split on a stack of Parmesan had just the right makings of an overnight meme.

Snoop Dogg in Paris

Rapper, producer and actor Snoop Dogg can now add three new titles to his résumé: Olympic torchbearer, special correspondent and meme sweetheart. By just being himself at the Games , Calvin Cordozar Broadus Jr. stole the hearts of viewers around the world and inspired thousands of memes across social media.

Highs and lows of surfing photography

Brazil’s Gabriel Medina might have made history with his 9.9 ride on the waves of Teahupo'o, but it was photographer Jerome Brouillet’s photo of the event that really made waves online. But the once-in-a-lifetime photo of Medina might have met its match in the shot of German surfer Tim Elter losing his swimming trunks while competing.

Hype man Flavor Flav

Public Enemy co-founder Flavor Flav became a beloved Olympics icon when it was announced he was sponsoring Team USA women’s water polo team and providing financial support to Veronica Fraley , a track and field athlete from Raleigh, N.C. Footage of the rapper hyping up athletes and speaking at press conferences quickly went viral during the Games.

“Unfortunately, I was not chosen for the Olympics…”

A new TikTok trend emerged during the Games in which athletes shared footage of themselves failing in their respective sports, accompanied by some variant of the tongue-in-cheek caption, “Unfortunately, I was not chosen for the 2024 Olympics.”

After her stumble off the balance beam, Suni Lee herself got in on the meme, finding the humor in the unfortunate fall.

Other memes of note

While not every meme went viral or created a social media trend, there was no shortage of internet humor mined at the 2024 Summer Olympics. Here’s a look at some other notable memes from the Games.

Updated, Aug. 12, 2024, 12:52 p.m.: This story was originally published on Aug. 6 and has been updated to include additional memes from the Games.

US, Australia, Canada, Philippines stage naval and air force maneuvers in disputed South China Sea

The United States, Australia, Canada and the Philippines are staging joint air force and naval drills in what they say is a show of force to promote the rule of law in the disputed South China Sea, where China has increasingly asserted its territorial ...

MANILA, Philippines -- The United States, Australia, Canada and the Philippines held air and naval maneuvers Wednesday in a show of force that they said aimed to promote the rule of law in the disputed South China Sea, where China has increasingly asserted its territorial claims.

In an apparent response, China said it conducted air and sea combat patrols on the same day. The Philippine military said three Chinese navy ships “tailed” the four-nation maneuvers off the western coast of the Philippines, but did not provide more details.

Adm. Samuel Paparo, who heads the U.S. Indo-Pacific Command, and top military and defense commanders from Australia, Canada and the Philippines said in a joint statement that they “stand together to address common maritime challenges and underscore our shared dedication to upholding international law and the rules-based order.” They said they were staging the two-day exercises to uphold unhindered passage in the Indo-Pacific region.

China has long claimed much of the South China Sea , a key global trade and security route, and vowed to defend its territorial interests at all costs. Its claims overlap those of smaller coastal states, including the Philippines and Vietnam, hampering their access to traditional fishing areas and disrupting oil and gas exploration in their internationally recognized exclusive economic zones.

“The naval and air force units of participating nations will operate together, enhancing cooperation and interoperability between our armed forces,” the commanders said. “The activity will be conducted in a manner that is consistent with international law and with due regard to the safety of navigation and the rights and interests of other states.”

The Philippine military said Wednesday's drills included combined sea passage maneuvers and communications drills with assault helicopters flying low over the navy ships in the high seas. An anti-submarine warfare drill was also planned, it said.

A Philippine navy spokesperson, Rear Adm. Roy Trinidad, said the exercises were not directed at any country but were “a collective expression of support for a rules-based international order.”

China said it held joint sea and air combat patrols on Wednesday near Scarborough Shoal, a disputed territory in the South China Sea, in an apparent response to the exercises. The Philippine military said it did not monitor any Chinese combat patrols at the shoal.

A short statement from the Chinese military’s Southern Theater Command indicated that it was aware of “military activities that disrupt the South China Sea” and that they were “under control.” China regularly accuses the U.S., the Philippines and others of undermining regional peace and stability though their military activities.

Paparo and the other military commanders, Adm. David Johnston of the Australian Defense Force, Gen. Jennie Carignan of the Canadian Armed Forces and Gen. Romeo Brawner Jr. of the Armed Forces of the Philippines, said their countries “uphold the right to freedom of navigation and overflight, other lawful uses of the sea and international airspace, as well as respect for maritime rights under international law."

They did not mention China by name but said their nations affirm a 2016 arbitration ruling on the South China Sea disputes “as a final and legally binding decision on the parties to the dispute.” The ruling invalidated China’s expansive claims in the South China Sea, but Beijing refused to participate in the Philippines-initiated arbitration, rejected the decision and continues to defy it.

Hostilities in the disputed waters have flared particularly between Chinese and Philippine coast guard and naval forces at two disputed shoals since last year, renewing fears that the confrontations could degenerate into a larger armed conflict involving the United States, Manila’s longtime treaty ally.

After an alarmingly violent June 17 confrontation at Philippine-occupied Second Thomas Shoal in the South China Sea, China and the Philippines reached a temporary agreement last month aimed at preventing further clashes.
