Another Neil Young Cause, Another CSNY ‘Reunion’: Could This Be the Final One?

For Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young loyalists craving a reunion of any type, that moment has unexpectedly arrived — sort of.

On Wednesday, David Crosby, Stephen Stills, and Graham Nash joined their erstwhile bandmate Neil Young in requesting that their music be yanked off Spotify as a way to protest the service’s alliance with podcaster and Covid vaccine skeptic Joe Rogan . “We support Neil and we agree with him that there is dangerous disinformation being aired on Spotify’s Joe Rogan podcast,” read CSN’s statement in part. That declaration came on the heels of Young’s own , which resulted in all of his Warner Brothers albums vanishing from that streaming platform.

Assuming CSN’s request is granted by the business side of the music business — a source close to the situation believes that their albums, both group and solo, will be pulled down “in the coming days” — it will be the latest moment in which these four very different men could agree on something. And it will be the latest example of the way in which, throughout their often fractious 54-year history, Young has been the force in pulling all four of them back into the same room — and often to support his own causes.

The pattern was established early on, and after some bloodshed. In 1970, CSNY were only one show into a much-anticipated tour behind Déjà Vu  when the group collapsed and returned home . The four went off into different corners as their managers and record company tried to pick up the pieces.  During that downtime, Young famously saw an issue of Life magazine detailing the Kent State shootings and dashed off “Ohio” as Crosby watched. Very soon after, the reunited group was rehearsing for resumed shows, but they also found the time to rush into a nearby studio to record Young’s anti-Nixon takedown. The song and the recording lent them a renewed sense of purpose — and a new way to connect with fans who were growing disillusioned with the band over all their internal discord.

CSNY’s 1974 reunion tour , the first such undertaken in stadiums, wasn’t motivated by one of Young’s political, social, or environmental causes — financial reward was a factor — but when the quartet did reconvene in a major way, Young was again the one grabbing the wheel. With his late wife Pegi, he cofounded the Bridge School, a nonprofit helping children with speech and physical impairments. For its first annual benefit in 1986, Young lured in Bruce Springsteen, Don Henley, Tom Petty — and, for the first time in 12 years, CSN. Luckily, Crosby had been released from prison not long before the show (he’d been serving time for drug charges). In 2000, when CSNY reformed for another tour, the foursome also came together for a performance at Farm Aid, another one of Young’s pet causes.

Pre-Spotify, Young’s most flagrant use of a CSNY reunion to buttress one of his missions came in 2006. Young had released Living With War, an album of anti–Iraq War, anti–George W. Bush diatribes. Realizing that those types of political songs were in CSNY’s wheelhouse, and also realizing that an arena reunion tour would bring greater attention to the material, Young pulled together a CSNY tour. In the red states, the new songs unleashed occasional boos, walkouts, and even a bomb threat. But as seen in Young’s doc on the tour, CSNY Deja Vu, it also brought the four men together in ways they hadn’t expected.

Then, once again, silence — until CSNY shared the stage once more, this time for the Bridge School’s 2013 benefit. To date, that odd performance (Young largely bobbing and weaving behind the trio as they sang) remains their final appearance as a quartet; CSN’s trio incarnation broke up about two years later. Hope for any group undertaking was dashed again and again — first by Crosby’s disparaging comments on Young’s partner and later wife Daryl Hannah (for which Crosby later apologized), and then by a falling out between longtime friends Crosby and Nash that remains to this day. Although some in their camp hoped the quartet would come together for an anti-Trump tour during his presidency, it never happened.

But as this week’s news has proven, all they need is a common enemy — Richard Nixon, Dubya — or an amenable cause for them to find common ground. Rogan and Spotify have reminded everyone, maybe even themselves, that their bond, however fragile and easily breakable, remains. The only question about this semi-convening is: Will this be the latest — or the absolute very last?

Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young Announce Reunion Tour Dates

Folk-rock supergroup Crosby Stills Nash & Young held a press conference in New York on Tuesday to announce their upcoming reunion tour, the foursome's first outing in a quarter of a century.

All four members of the group were present to discuss the tour, dubbed CSNY2K, which kicks off January 24 in Detroit, Michigan; they also plugged their upcoming album, "Looking Forward," which is due in stores on October 26.

Don’t Rule Out A Reunion Just Yet!

For quite some time now, fans have been without the full Crosby, Stills, Nash, & Young lineup. Though it’s not exactly a bad thing, we’ve been seeing Crosby, Stills, Nash, & Young just without the Young . It’s no secret that there is unresolved tension within the band, and though no member has really touched on it, it’s still there, at least we think.

Recently, The Young of the group, Neil Young , spoke on whether or not a CSNY reunion is possible, and let’s just say that things are looking great for CSNY fans!

Neil Young is asked about the possibly of a CSNY reunion:  “I think CSNY has every chance of getting together again. I’m not against it. There’s been a lot of bad things happen among us, and a lot of things have to be settled. But that’s what brothers and families are all about. We’ll see what happens. I’m open. I don’t think I’m a major obstacle.”

So there you have it, if Neil Young believes it’s possible, then we can presume that there’s about a 99.99% chance of it happening. I’ll tell you what, this makes me extremely excited! ( laasyaart.com ) Just think, if these legends could reunite for even just one more tour, how exciting would that be!?! Time will tell, but I’m gonna excited!

David Crosby , Stephen Stills and Graham Nash have issued a statement supporting former bandmate Neil Young in seeking the removal of their music from Spotify in protest of podcaster Joe Rogan .

In the statement posted on Stills’ Twitter page, the trio write, “We support Neil and we agree with him that there is dangerous disinformation being aired on Spotify’s Joe Rogan podcast. While we always value alternate points of view, knowingly spreading disinformation during this global pandemic has deadly consequences. Until real action is taken to show that a concern for humanity must be balanced with commerce, we don’t want our music – or the music we made together – to be on the same platform.”

In his own tweets, Crosby is publicly asking Taylor Swift to join the Spotify protest, writing that that “she is the only one who has successfully kicked Spotifys ass. The only one. I think she could give us good advice. This isn’t over.”

In other tweets, Crosby said he was not trying to “censor” Rogan, but that he does not “want to be in the same marketplace…he is doing harm with antivaxer bullshit that gets people killed.”

Rogan, Crosby writes, is “not stupid so he knows it’s a lie. He sells it anyway to make a lot of money.”

With Crosby, Stills, Nash, Young and Joni Mitchell calling out Spotify and Rogan, the campaign represents a nice chunk of the 1970s Laurel Canyon music scene.

Also speaking out against Spotify and Rogan this week were Nils Logren (of Bruce Springsteen’s E Street Band and Young’s Crazy Horse) and India Arie, who said she also objected to Rogan’s comments on race. Prince Harry and Megan Markle’s Archwell Productions released a statement Sunday expressing their concern over Covid-19 misinformation on Spotify without mentioning Rogan. The pair have a deal with Spotify worth a reported $25 million to make podcasts.

Publicly supporting Rogan are Dwayne Johnson, Kevin James, Jewel, Jamie Kennedy, Tulsi Gabbard, Troy Aikman, Kat Von D, Domanic Monaghan, Candice Owens, Jillian Michaels, Tomi Lahren and Andrew Dice Clay.

Band has not been active for four years

Fans hoping for a potential Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young (CSYN) reunion tour may be disappointed, according to David Crosby. Crosby recently spoke with SiriusXM’s Storme Warren on the matter and says the band’s future plans are completely in the hands of Neil Young.

“I don’t think we really hate each other, but no, we haven’t tried to talk to each other,” Crosby says. “There’s an obvious thing. I mean, I’ve had people approach me already and say gigantic numbers. There’s only two bands from Woodstock that are still alive, man. There’s Carlos [Santana] and us. And it is, of course, on a lot of people’s minds, some of whom have many, many millions of dollars. So, I figured that somebody is going to Neil [Young], and it’s always up to Neil.”

He continues, “Trust me. If we put twenty thousand people in the stadium, Neil brought ten [thousand], and that’s the truth of it. You go on any other thing, you’re deceiving yourself. It is Neil’s choice. And he might want to and he might not. He’s a very mercurial dude. If he decides to and he calls me up and says he wants to do it, fine. I will do it in a hot minute.”

The group — Crosby, Stephen Stills, Graham Nash and Young — have been on again and off again since its inception in 1968 when it initially started as Crosby, Stills and Nash (CSN). Young later joined as the group’s fourth member, but stepped away in 2015 after Crosby called Young’s now wife Darryl Hannah a “purely poisonous predator.”

Crosby later apologized, stating, “I have screwed up massively. Daryl Hannah never wound up in a Texas prison [like I did]. I’m screwed up way worse than that girl. Where do I get off criticizing her? She’s making Neil happy. I love Neil and I want him happy.”

Young reacted by stating that CSNY would never play together again “in a million years.”

In 2016, Nash told the Dutch magazine Lust for Life that he and Crosby had bad blood and couldn’t continue CSN. He wouldn’t elaborate on what happened between the pair, but stated, “I don’t like David Crosby right now. He’s been awful for me the last two years, just fucking awful. I’ve been there and saved his fucking ass for 45 years, and he treated me like shit. You can’t do that to me. You can do it for a day or so, until I think you’re going to come around. When it goes on longer, and I keep getting nasty emails from him, I’m done. Fuck you. David has ripped the heart out of Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young.”

He continues, “How can I not be sad? Look at the music we probably lost. How can I not be sad about that? The truth is, after being totally immersed in me and David and Stephen and Neil’s music, I’m done. I’ve had ten years of it. Leave me the fuck alone. I need to concentrate on me now.”

The same year, he told Billboard that there was no chance for another CSN tour or record as of that time. “Right now, I don’t want anything to do with Crosby at all. It’s just that simple. In my world there will never, ever be a Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young record and there will never be another Crosby, Stills & Nash record or show. I was letting Crosby be who he is. I let people play their hand in front of me, and I let him do it and then I make a decision.”

The foursome last performed together in 2013 at Young’s annual Bridge School Benefit concert, according to Consequence of Sound . CSN reunited for a couple of tours the following two years, but have remained inactive since 2015.

Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young, and the Byrds co-founding member, David Crosby, responded to one of the tweets of his followers and revealed whether there is any chance of a  CSNY reunion.

You might know that David Crosby is the founder of both the Byrds and Crosby, Stills & Nash & Young and he was one of the most popular musicians of the ’70s. After parting ways with the Byrds, he met with Stephen Stills, and the duo was joined by Graham Nash to form a band. After releasing their self-titled debut album in 1969, Crosby won the Grammy Award for ‘ Best New Artist.’

Although Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young members were inducted into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame , excluding Neil Young, in 1997, the band has not released anything new since 1999’s ‘Looking Forward.’ Back in 2017, Crosby admitted that he has not been talking with Graham Nash and Neil Young for years, adding that he does not rule out the possible reunion.

Recently, David responded to one of his followers and stated that a CSNY reunion will never happen . The co-founding member stated that the band members haven’t been close to each other for years and bid farewell to the band by saying ‘let it rest in peace.’

A follower of Crosby wrote this:

“To be honest, I decided a few years ago that a CSNY reunion would likely be a disappointment – compared to David Crosby’s current work with the shy trails and lighthouse bands.”

Crosby responded saying:

“If we liked each other and we were all capable we could still blow your mind. But they don’t and we aren’t. So I say let it Rest in Peace . We did good work and I am justifiably proud of it but it’s history now.”

Genesis Adds More 2022 Dates to Reunion Tour

Genesis — Phil Collins, Michael Rutherford, and Tony Banks — have added two more dates to the 2022 edition of their reunion tour. On Oct. 25, they announced nine concerts, representing the first European dates of the tour. On Oct. 29, the day those shows went on sale, the band announced two additional concerts, due to demand. The 11 concerts – in Germany, France and the Netherlands – precede three London concerts that were rescheduled when Rutherford tested positive for Covid-19. See the itinerary below. On Oct. 8, the band postponed the final four dates of the U.K. edition of their 2021 reunion tour. (On Oct. 19, the shows at The O2 in London were rescheduled for March 2022. The announcement made no mention of the Oct. 8 show in Glasgow.) Though neither announcement identified who had taken ill, the touring band consists of the three veterans, plus Collins’ son, Nic, who serves as their drummer, as well as longtime Genesis touring band member, Daryl Stuermer, returns on guitar and bass.

At the time of the Oct. 19 announcement of the new London dates, Best Classic Bands wrote, “Given the enormity of the undertaking, it’s not unreasonable to expect that the group will decide to extend their reunion tour further into 2022, perhaps to Europe as well as other parts of North America beyond the east coast.”

In a Nov. 15 interview with USA Today , Banks neither confirmed nor denied that. “When we do the final show next year, that will be it,” he said. “We thought the 2007 tour would be the end, and this was never planned, so it was a nice thing to have happened. But it’s important to know when to stop something. So I’d say if you want to see Genesis, don’t put it off ‘til the next one. We’re not like the (Rolling) Stones.”

The U.K. leg of The Last Domino? tour began Sept. 20 in Birmingham and played for 12 shows before being suspended after their Oct. 7 concert in Glasgow.

On Jan. 22, 2021, they rescheduled their U.K. reunion tour a second time, due to the global pandemic. The dates, originally planned for November and December 2020 in the U.K. and Ireland have been pushed back to September and October 2021. (On July 24, 2020, the band moved the tour to April 2021. The magnitude of the pandemic proved those dates to be too premature.) See the revised schedule and new rehearsal teaser below.

From the Jan. 22 statement: “The decision to move the tour again is due to the global pandemic, and even with the roll out of the vaccine, there are still a huge amount of uncertainties and unanswered questions that make a tour in April difficult for everyone. It is appreciated, that for whatever reason, those planning on attending the shows may not feel comfortable doing so, so by moving the tour we can alleviate some of those concerns and in turn that will allow the band and the crew to prepare with less unpredictability and create a show that both the band and fans alike will treasure and enjoy.

In the earlier joint statement on Jan. 22, Collins, Banks and Rutherford said: “Well let’s just forget about that last year and focus on 2021 shall we! We can’t wait to finally get this show on the road, but we feel the decision to move the tour is the best one for those planning on attending and for us as a band and crew. We hope now we can all relax a little more and focus on the music and having a good night.”

Many tours have been delayed to 2022 or canceled altogether.

On April 1, 2021, Live Nation U.K. released a brief clip for the tour.

The day before, the station teased their “exclusive reveal” that “a massive band is reuniting.” That same day, the group posted a photo of the trio on their Instagram account with just the phrase, “And then there were three…”

Genesis fans will certainly recognize that that was the name of the band’s 1978 album, their first as a threesome. Collins, Rutherford and Banks last toured together in 2007.

There was no indication whether the tour would be extended to other countries.

The trio was seen at New York’s Madison Square Garden on Jan. 22, 2020, when they attended a Knicks game though, oddly, Collins was not seated with the other two. At that time, speculation was rife that the group would reunite.

The group’s original frontman, Peter Gabriel, who left the band in 1975 for a successful solo career, is not involved. (He’s appeared with the group on stage several times since his departure.)

Genesis concerts are known for having spectacular light shows. Best Classic Bands asked Banks about that. “Great lighting effects can carry the music along and present more of a show,” he said. “If you got it right, you heightened the emotion of the music. I’m not the most visual person onstage,” he added with a laugh.

Due to severe issues with his back, Collins, who turned 70 on January 30, is no longer able to drum. He has also dealt with hip issues in recent years and now sits throughout most of his solo tour performances. They’ll be joined on this tour by Collins’ son, Nic, who has filled in for his father behind the kit during his recent solo tours. (The younger Collins turned 20 on April 21.) Longtime Genesis touring band member, Daryl Stuermer, returns on guitar and bass.

In 2018, Best Classic Bands asked Banks about an inevitable reunion. His reply: “Well, Phil is obviously not able to drum. But I never say we’ll never play together again.” Banks turned 71 on March 27.

During the band’s commercial heyday in the ’80s, Genesis had five straight studio albums reach #1 in the U.K. Though they continually earned multiple Platinum sales in the U.S., a #1 album in America eluded them. 1986’s  Invisible Touch was their top seller. The album yielded five Top 5 singles in the U.S., including the title track which became their solo U.S. #1 hit.

Even while the band was active, Collins, Rutherford and Banks each had many solo endeavors. Collins continues to sell out stadiums and arenas on his own, and has sold a reported 150 million records (albums and singles) worldwide. Between 1984-1989, he earned an astounding seven #1 solo singles in the U.S., for such songs as “Against All Odds (Take a Look at Me Now)” and “Another Day in Paradise.”

As the leader of Mike + the Mechanics, Rutherford has carved out a second career with such favorites as “The Living Years” and “All I Need is a Miracle.” Rutherford turned 69 on October 2. Banks’ solo releases have concentrated on orchestral pieces.

I sure wish Hackett and Peter were in. I’m not sure Phil can pull this off. Not that I would be able to get a ticket, but I’m afraid if I go, Phil is going to make me sad.

I don’t see how Phil Collins can do a big tour like that considering his health problems. And that’s too much for his son to have to handle by himself.

Neil Young Won’t Reunite Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young Because David Crosby Shit-Talked His Wife

Back in 2014, David Crosby thought it would be a great idea to publicly declare that the new girlfriend of one of his oldest pals, Neil Young, was a “purely poisonous predator” who wasn’t worthy of Young’s affection — which was also fueled by the fact that Young recently separated with his wife of four decades. Young would go on to marry this lethal broad , Daryl Hannah, a few years later, and despite repeated apologies from Crosby in the press, neither the duo nor their full band, Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young, have appeared together in any capacity since. (You may recall that Jimmy Fallon’s humorous reunion with the group was noticeably Young-less.) In a new interview with Rolling Stone, Crosby admitted that he has privately contacted Young many times with apology pleas, one of which was an emailed opus, but he never got a response.

“No, I really don’t,” Crosby explained when asked about the potential of a CSNY reunion. “I got as out-front with it as I could. I sent an email to Neil, saying, ‘Listen, I know you’re pissed at me because I slagged your girlfriend. And I’m sorry.’ I’ve apologized a couple of times publicly … and I said, ‘I’m really sorry I shot my mouth off about your girlfriend. I really am. But we’ve all been horrible to each other over the years.’ Neil left Stephen in the middle of a tour, twice! Twice! It was a really good email, man. It was very sincere, very straightforward. I’m not buttering his toast, trying to suck his dick.”

While Crosby insisted that his long email to Young was “totally sincere,” he says he “got a large, empty, echoing silence back,” even when the possibility of a reunion was thrown around to support the Democratic Party in this election year — an idea that fellow member Stephen Stills supports. “Everybody in the country would, man,” Crosby added about a reunion. “There’s only one person who doesn’t want it. No, there’s two people who don’t want it. That’s Neil and the lady in question.” No, not Judy . Daryl.

Lena, our guide in Moscow was excellent. She was very knowledgable and could answer any question we had for her. We liked that she could pick up on our interests and take us places we might not have thought of to go. When we realized that one of the places we had chosen to see would probably not be that interesting to us, she was able to arrange entry to the Diamond Fund and the Armoury for us. Riding the Metro with Lena was a real adventure and a lot of fun. In Saint Petersburg we found Anna well versed in the history of the Tsars and in the Hermitage collection. Arkady in Veliky Novgorod was a very good guide and answered all of our questions with ease. Novgorod was perhaps a long way to go for a day trip, but we did enjoy it. Vasily was a great driver to have and kept us safe with good humour and skill. We enjoyed ourselves so much, my daughter says she is already planning to return. We would both have no hesistation to recommend ExpresstoRussia to anyone we know.

Just wanted to let you know that My grandson Bruno and I couldn´t have been more pleased with our week in Moscow (6/15 - 6/21). We were absolutely enchanted with the whole experience, including getting lost a couple of times in the Metro during our free time. Although both our guides (both Eleanas) were excellent, I would particularly commend the first one (she took us to the Tatiakov, the KGB tour, and to that beautiful cemetery where so many great Russian artists, authors, composers, musicians, militarists, and politicians are buried). Her knowledge is encyclopedic; and her understanding of today´s Russia as a product of its past was, for us, truly enlightening. I will be taking another tour in Russia, with my wife, within the next two or three years. I will be in touch with you when the time comes. Do they speak English in Moscow?

As Russia’s capital city, tourists are well accommodated in Moscow. There should be English-speaking staff in restaurants, bars, hotels, shops and attractions in tourist hotspots, and there are also English-speaking tourist police. Transport services have English translations on their maps and English announcements via intercom; alternatively, order taxis from the Yandex Taxi app (Russian Uber), though it’s unlikely that your taxi driver will speak English. If you get stuck and cannot communicate, it’s fine to use Google Translate.

Is it safe to travel to Moscow?

It is no less safe to travel to Moscow than to any European city if you exercise common sense and look after your belongings. As with every city some regions can be more unsavoury than others, but no tourist attractions are located there. The traffic in Moscow is notorious, so exercise caution when crossing roads. Do not take unlicensed taxis; book in advance or take public transport, which is widespread and perfectly safe. If you encounter any problems, look for the special tourist police who can help you.
