Itinerary – Darjeeling Sikkim tour Package 7 days

Day 01 : siliguri/bagdogra to darjeeling  (83 km./ 3 hrs).

Welcome to  Darjeeling Sikkim Tour Package . On arrival at Siliguri (NJP) railway station or Bagdogra (IXB) airport meet & greet by Navigator India’s representative. Transfer from Siliguri/Bagdogra to Darjeeling through lush green tea gardens & undulating hills. Check into hotel & rest of the day is t leisure.

Day 02 : Darjeeling sightseeing

Early in the morning (around 4 am), proceed to Tiger Hill to view the breath taking view of Mt.Kanchandzonga (28,200 ft.) & effect of sunlight on the same along with the adjoining peaks like Kabru & Pandim. On the way back visit Ghoom Monastery & Batasia Loop. After breakfast proceed for a half day  excursion to Himalayan Mountaineering (HMI) & Padmaja Naidu Himalayan Zoological Park (Thursday closed), Peace Pagoda, Japanese Temple, Tea garden (outer view), Tenzing Rock, Tibetan Refugee Self-Help Center (Sunday closed) etc.

Day 03 : Darjeeling to Pelling (Pemayangtse, West Sikkim) (85 km / 3 hrs)

After break fast proceed to Pelling a small township in West Sikkim . Check into you hotel. Rest of the day will be at leisure.

Day 04 : Pelling sightseeing

Today you will proceed to full day sight seeing to Rimbi False, Rimbi Rock Garden, Kanchandzonga False, Khecheopalri Lake, Pemayangtse monastery etc.

Day 05 : Pelling to Gangtok (East Sikkim) (124 km / 5 hrs)

Today you will transferred to Gangtok , the capital of Sikkim, from Pelling via Ravangla – a small township & the district head quarter of  South Sikkim. Check into your hotel in Gangtok. Afternoon free for refreshment.

Day 06 : Excursion – Tsomgo Lake & Baba Mandir

Early in the morning (7.30 am) drive for an excursion to Tsomgo Lake , situated 32 km away from the city at an altitude of above 12,000 ft. & Baba Mandir another 01 hour drive. Enjoy yak ride around the lake (own cost).  Drive back to hotel for lunch. Enjoy your evening at famous MG Marg in Gangtok.

Note: Foreigner are not allowed to go to Baba Mandir. They can go up to Tsomgo Lake only accompanied by a local guide (compulsory). Guide charges to be paid extra.

Day 07: Gangtok to Siliguri/Bagdogra (135 km. / 4.30 hrs)

Himalayan Mountaineering Institute in a premium mountaineering institute in the world & an important sightseeing point for Darjeeling Sikkim Tour. Tenzing Norgay & Sir Edmund Hillary scaled Mt. Everest on 29 th  May 1953. In 1954 the institute was established to honour the great mountaineers. Tenzing Norgey was the first field director of the institute. HMI has a museum with various mountaineering artefacts including the first Everest Expedition. It also has boarding facilities for mountaineering students & trainers, along with a restaurant & souvenir shop for the tourist. HMI is one of the renowned mountaineering institutes of the world & a prime attraction for the adventure lovers.

Adjacent to Himalayan Mountaineering Institute (HMI) there is Padmaja Naidu Himalayan Zoological Park, one of the best high altitude zoos in the world. It is spread across 67.6 acres at an average elevation of 7000 ft. The zoo was inaugurated in 1958 & was dedicated to Padmaja Naidu who was the daughter of Sarojini Naidu & Ex governor on West Bengal. The zoo is a captive breeding centre for Snow Leopard, Red Panda & Himalayan Wolf.  There are other important animals are Salamander, Siberian Tiger, Yak ect. The zoo is also reach in fauna. It has over 200 species of plants & trees, shrubs & medicinal plants. There are over 50 varieties of orchids & high altitude trees like Oak, Brich, Maple ect.

Japanese Temple & Peace Pagoda 

Just 2.5 km away from Darjeeling Town in Jalapahara there is a Temple built in Japanese style. It is a two storied building with a large prayer hall. The temple belongs to ‘Nipponzan Myohoji’ Buddhist order. It was established in 1972 by Nichidatsu Fujii, who also the founder of Nipponzan Myohoji order. The temple is open through the day. But if you reach on time you can join the prayer early morning at 4.30 in the morning & 4.30 in the afternoon.

Just a few meters away from Japanese Temple there is a Peace Pagoda. These two are among the most important tourist attraction in Darjeeling. The foundation stone of the pagoda was laid in 1972 but was inaugurated in 1992. It is a white coloured Buddhist stupa with four Statue of Lord Buddha replicating four different forms or avatars. One can walk around the stupa to see tales of Lord Buddha’s life craved on the wall of pagoda. The white colour indicates the equality, non-violence & world peace.

Kecheopalri Lake  

Situated in the north-west of Pelling, Kecheopalri Lake is a sacred pilgrimage site for both Hindus and Buddhists. Believed to be a wish-fulfilling lake, this place is heaven for nature lovers and travellers. Many interesting legends revolve around the origin and history of the lake. The shape of the lake looks like a footprint if viewed from the top. Hindus consider this as the footprint of god Shiva while Buddhists believe it to be the footprint of goddess Tara. Another interesting fact about this lake is that in spite of being situated amidst so mush of greenery, no fallen leaves can be seen floating on its surface. It is said that the birds keep the lake clean all the time. Emerging as a popular tourist attraction in Sikkim, Kecheopalri Lake is visited by pilgrims from all around the world.

Pemayangtse Monastery  

Pemayangtse monastery is a popular Buddhist monastery covered in Darjeeling Sikkim Tour. It situated at a distance of 2 km from Pelling. Built in 1705 by Lama Lhatsum Chempo, it is one of the oldest monasteries in Sikkim. The word Pemayangtse means ‘sublime lotus’ and it is considered to represent one of the four plexus of human body. With its beautiful collection of Buddhist idols, scriptures, sculptures, carvings and paintings, this three storied building is a heavenly place surrounded by magnificent Himalayan ranges of snow-capped mountains. Outside the monastery, there is also a very beautiful picturesque garden well maintained by the monks. Undoubtedly this monastery is one of the must see places when one is in Pelling.

Singshore Bridge 

Darjeeling Sikkim tour covers Singshore Bridge. Located at a distance of 5 km from Pelling, the grand Singshore Bridge is an extremely popular tourist spot in West Sikkim. It was constructed nearly 16 years ago by connecting two hills. Singshore bridge is also the highest bridge in Sikkim and second highest gorge bridge in Asia. Surrounded by immense green hillsides and offering enchanting views of beautiful waterfalls, the atmosphere of the bridge is completely a treat to the eyes.

Tsomgo Lake & Baba Mandir

Tsomgo Lake , a very popular tourist attraction, is 40 km. away from Gangtok situated at an altitude of 12400 ft. The source of the water is the melting snow of the surrounding mountains. Nathula Pass (Optional)

Nathula Pass is one of the major attractions in Sikkim. It is trade route which connect Sikkim with Tibet. It is situated just 56 km away (3 hrs drive) from Gangtok. The road passes through Tsomgo Lake (Changu Lake) another major tourist attraction in Sikkim. Nathula Pass height is above 14,000 ft (4,200 mtr) and Gangtok to Nathu la is one of the highest motorable roads in the world. Tourists need a protected area permit to visit the pass. Autumn (Mid Sep to Nov)

Summer (May to Jun)

How to Reach- Darjeeling Sikkim tour package

The nearest airport is  Bagdogra airport (IXB). There are road connections from Bagdogra Airport to various destinations in Darjeeling Sikkim & Dooars. Bagdogra directly connects Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Guwahati, Bangaluru, Chennai, Paro & Bangkok. It has indirect connections with all major cities in India. Bagdogra plays an important role in planning your tour packages to Sikkim Darjeeling & Gnagtok.

Sikkim Airport: Pakyong Airport (PUG) is the only airport in Sikkim. It is approx 30 km away from Gangtok. It connects Kolkata & Guwahati.

The nearest railway station is New Jalpaiguri (NJP) located near Siliguri. NJP connects with all major cities in India. Sikkim does not have any railway connectivity. NJP is the only option to access any destination in Darjeeling & Sikkim.

Siliguri/Bagdogra/NJP is connected through national National Highway 55 & 10. North Bengal State Transport Corporation (NBSTC) operates regular buses from Siliguri to various destinations like Darjeeling, Kalimpong, Mirik, Lava etc. Sikkim national Transport (SNT) operates regular basses to places in Sikkim. There are no of private buses & cars available from Tenzing Norgay Bus Terminus.

Day 02: Darjeeling Sightseeing

Start your day early at 4:00 AM with a drive to Tiger Hill, the famous vantage point to witness the breathtaking sunrise over Mt. Kanchenjunga, the world’s third-highest peak. Day 03: Excursion to Mirik

After breakfast, embark on an excursion to Mirik, located at an altitude of 5,900 ft. The distance is approximately 45 km and will take around 2 hours each way. Enjoy boating and horse riding at the picturesque Mirik Lake, and en route, make a stop at the India-Nepal border to explore the Pashupati market. In the evening, you can take a leisurely walk to Chowrasta and Mall Road. Overnight stay in Darjeeling.

Day 04: Departure from Darjeeling

After breakfast, check out from your hotel and proceed to NJP Railway Station or Bagdogra Airport for your onward journey. Your memorable Darjeeling and Mirik tour concludes here.

• Point-to-point sightseeing: All sightseeing activities will be conducted as per the mentioned itinerary, ensuring that you visit all the designated attractions.
• Transfer and Sightseeing: The package includes all necessary transfers and sightseeing activities. You will be provided with comfortable transportation throughout your journey.
• Vehicle Type: For groups of 4-7 people (including children), a Xylo/Innova or a similar vehicle will be provided. These vehicles are spacious and suitable for a comfortable journey.
• For groups of 1-3 people (including children), a WagonR or a similar vehicle will be provided. These vehicles are ideal for a small group or individual travelers.
• Meal Plan: The package includes a meal plan of CP (Continental Plan), which includes breakfast only. You will be provided with breakfast at your accommodation.
• Accommodation: You will be accommodated in twin-sharing rooms, ensuring that you share a room with another person in your group. This arrangement offers comfort and convenience during your stay.

You feel like a package that is just being brought around from one to another hot tourist spot, that is just considered a must-see because it is in some guide and all the tourists have to visit it, but in fact is not interesting at all. After some days, I realized that my trip with them was going to be just a waste of time. Sikkim is a very nice area to visit the beautiful nature and to see some interesting temples and get an understanding view of the Buddhist history and his monasteries. Nevertheless I paid ITS a high price for their suggested tour, I really feel that they spoiled this unique opportunity for me to have an amazing experience of Sikkim. I even left 2 days earlier and when I asked them to make a stop in a town on the way to the airport, my final drop-off point as arranged in the program, they even tried to charge me extra. Day 01: Siliguri/Bagdogra to Darjeeling via Mirik (104 Km / approx 3.30 hrs)

Welcome to Darjeeling Gangtok Kalimpong Tour . On arrival at the Bagdogra airport or New Jalpaiguri railway station (own cost), you will be transferred to Darjeeling. Enroute you will visit Mirik Lake, an ideal place for boating where on arrival you will check into your hotel.

Day 02: Darjeeling sight seeing

Early morning (around 4.00 am), you will drive to Tiger Hill to enjoy the magnificent view of sunrise and the effect of sun light over the Eastern Himalayan peaks like Mt. Kanchendzonga (28,208 ft), Kabru, Pandim etc (subject to clear weather conditions). On return to your hotel visit Ghoom Monastery and Batasia Loop.After breakfast there will be Darjeeling city tour including HMI, Darjeeling Zoo, tea garden, Tenzing Rock Tibetan Self Help Refugee Centre, Rangeet Valley Passerger Ropeway etc.

Day 05: Gangtok to Kalimpong (75 km./ 2.30 hrs.)

Darjeeling, the Queen of the Himalayas

Known as the ‘Queen of Himalayas’, Darjeeling has always been an endearing destination for tourists across the globe. The small town on the lap of the Himalayan mountains in the northern tip of West Bengal had served the colonial rulers as the summer capital. The name Darjeeling has its origin in two Tibetan words ‘Dorge’ means ‘thunderbolt’ and ‘Ling’ means ‘a place’ or ‘land’. Thus Darjeeling means the ‘Land of Thunderbolt’. The location Situated at a height of 2042 meters (6700 feet) above mean sea level, Darjeeling is known for its cool climate throughout the year. A blend of culture and tradition of North-Eastern states, the majority of the population here speaks Nepalese and is also conversant in Hindi and English.

How to reach? Whether travelling by train or flight, book your tickets as early as possible (minimum two months) to ensure a smooth journey and to get affordable fares. The nearest airport is Bagdogra of the Indian Air Force. New Jalpaiguri (NJP) is the nearest railway station. Siliguri, the nearest city to the airport is 16 km away. Flying down at Bagdogra By air, it takes hardly two hours for direct flights to reach Bagdogra airport from Bengaluru. Flying over the Himalayas was a visual extravaganza. It was like a voyage through a ‘milky ocean’ of clouds. You can marvel at the snow-clad peaks of the majestic Himalayas kissing the blue sky. Darjeeling is 90 km away from Bagdogra and 88 km away from the New Jalpaiguri Railway station. Buses to Darjeeling are available from the Tenzing Norgay Bus stand at Siliguri (Rs 100 to Rs 150). Cabs are also available from both airport and railway stations (Rs 1000 and above).

The Toy Train and the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway Don’t miss a joy ride in the toy train which has a legacy of more than 125 years. Aptly recognized by the United Nations (UN) by conferring World Heritage Status in 1999, the 88 km long railway line was built by the British, between New Jalpaigury and Darjeeling in 1880s. An engineering marvel, the train goes uphill through the 610 mm narrow gauge line, starting from 100 m above sea level at NJP to 2200 meters to Darjeeling. Those with enough time can enjoy a 7-hour trip from NJP top enjoying the climb or can have a feel of the custom-made 2-hour round-trip from Darjeeling to Ghum.

It’s Human to Travel

Ghum Railway Station The round-trip would start at 7: 40 am every day and the last ride is at 4:20 pm. Rides in both diesel engines (Rs 1000/ person) and old steam engines (Rs 1500/ person) are available. The train moves through beautiful tea gardens, panoramic valleys, and sometimes even through the road- cutting through the bustling streets. The ride has two stops, one at Ghum, and the second at Batasia Loop.

Ghum Railway Station and Museum Ghum is the railway station, set at the highest altitude (2258 meters) in the country. At Ghum, there is the Darjeeling Hill Railway (DHR) museum where the oldest and defunct steam engines are kept. Step down at the station and ensure some memorable photos. Batasia Loop On return, the train would stop at Batasia Loop for 10 minutes, from where one can have a view of Mount Kanchenjunga if the weather is good. You can also see the Darjeeling town below. Here you can also try the traditional dress of the indigenous communities and also buy some curios. One can have a panoramic view of the valley from Batasia Loop also there is the war memorial, with a garden, constructed in honour of the nameless Gorgha soldiers of Darjeeling who sacrificed their lives to protect the nation.

Tiger Hill, the Sunrise viewpoint At Darjeeling, the ‘sunrise’ at Tiger Hills, is one of the most enchanting experiences. Here the first rays of sun illuminate the snow-capped Himalayan Mountains amid which you can see the twin peaks of Mount Kanchenjunga in all its glory. If the sky is clear, one can also see Mount Everest. Lying at 2590 meters from sea level, the viewpoint is hardly a 30-minute drive, (13 km) away from the city. One has to trek about 500 meters on foot to reach the viewpoint where there is a vast gallery for tourists to comfortably sit and watch the sun blessing the horizon. Better to start by 3: 30 am as you can reach the viewpoint before 4:15 am to find a comfortable seat or watching spot. Cabs operate from the city to the hill every day.

Monasteries, the abode of culture and tradition Each monastery of Tibetan Buddhist origin provides a feast for the eyes, a festival of colours. More than a dozen monasteries are situated here. The Ghoom Monastery, Bhutia Busty Monastery, Dali Monastery and Samten Choeling Monastery are considered the most significant. At Ghoom monastery you will be welcomed by the statue of Maitreya Budha, believed to be the future incarnation of Buddha. Buy some curios as it is one of the sources of income for the inmates, apart from the contributions. Mesmerising Tibetan art and depictions of Buddhism decorate the walls. To have a unique taste of Naga cuisine, step into either ‘Kunga Restaurant’ near Chowk Bazaar or to ‘The Revolver Restaurant’, near the Union Chapel at Gandhi Road.

The blessing of the seasons The best season to visit the hill destination is ‘October to December’ (autumn) and also between ‘February to April’ (spring). During winter the temperature in the town dips to 5 degrees Celsius. At greater heights, the temperature goes further down to a sub-zero level. During summer (March-May) the temperature would be 15 degrees Celsius to 20 degrees Celsius.
