Your Complete Guide to Diamond Beach

A couple standing on Breiðamerkursandur, Diamond Beach, at sunset

Visiting Iceland’s stunning south coast isn’t complete without a short stop to admire Breiðamerkursandur, aka Diamond Beach. Iceland is renowned for its black sand beaches, but this one has some extra perks. In fact, we bet this is a sight unlike any you’ve seen before.

Interested in learning more about this beach? Or keen to see it IRL? Read on to find out where the black Diamond Beach in Iceland got its name and how to visit it.

  • Browse all Iceland vacation packages to find your ideal itinerary.

Diamond Beach, Breidamerkursandur, at sunset

Why is it called Diamond Beach?

The real name of Diamond Beach is Breiðamerkursandur, which translates to “Broad Plain Sand”. But its jewel-like nickname comes from the chunks of ice that decorate the beach all year long.

Icebergs from the nearby Breiðamerkurjökull glacier break away and bob through the famous Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon before setting out to sea. Some blocks of ice get stranded on the beach, creating the illusion of large diamonds.

The phenomenon is striking because of the ice’s bright color and the beach’s dark sand.

  • Blog: Learn more about another of Iceland’s highlights, Reynisfjara black sand beach .

What’s the best way to visit Diamond Beach?

A self-drive itinerary is the best way to see this unique black sand beach. Rent a car and drive along Route 1, stopping to take in the sights you want to see at your own pace.

You could explore the highlights of South Iceland only, going as far as Diamond Beach. But, as it’s located quite far east along the south coast, you could also drive around the entire Ring Road while you’re at it. Tour the country for the road trip of a lifetime.

FAQs about Diamond Beach

To help you prepare for your visit, we’ve answered top questions about Diamond Beach:

diamond-beach.jpg.webp

1. Where is it located?

Diamond Beach is located in southeast Iceland, right by the iconic Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon. Once you reach the lagoon, you’ll cross a single-track bridge. Take the first right for the Diamond Beach parking lot.

2. How far away from Reykjavík is it?

The beach is located around 390 kilometers (242 miles) from the capital of Iceland, Reykjavík. That’s around 5–6 hours of non-stop driving. With the extra daylight of summer, it’s feasible to make it in one day. That said, we recommend breaking up the journey.

Make this a multi-day adventure for a more leisurely pace and to fit in more attraction breaks. A popular place to sleep along the way is the Vík area.

  • See Diamond Beach on a 5-day Iceland itinerary.

3. Is there parking at Diamond Beach?

Yes, there is a parking lot right by the Ring Road. It’s only a short walk to the beach from there.

4. Why is the ice blue?

You might find that the visually mesmerizing chunks of ice scattered around Diamond Beach are a bit blue. In fact, the ice comes in a variety of shapes, colors, and sizes. Some will be dark or light blue and some even black.

There are different reasons for the variation in color. Blue is often a sign of an older block of ice. Lack of air pockets in the ice may influence the blue shade too.

If you see bits of ice with black in it, they might simply be reflecting the color of the sand. Or they may have volcanic dust inside of them.

These differences are what make Breiðamerkursandur such a cool sight. You’ll walk along the beach and admire the wide variety of icebergs on display.

Diamond-beach-jokulsarlon-glacier-lagoon-in-Iceland.jpg

5. Why is the sand black?

Diamond Beach isn’t the only black beach in Iceland. The country is renowned for its dark sands. You’ll find that it’s the red and golden sand beaches that are unusual here.

There is a simple reason that black sand beaches are so common in Iceland. It’s all thanks to the volcanic landscape of the island.

The black sand is mostly made up of basalt, which is lava that cooled rapidly after contact with the sea. The shattered basalt gets smaller and smaller over time becoming sand.

  • Learn all about the country’s varied landscapes in our Iceland nature guide .
  • Blog: Read this guide to Iceland’s volcanoes .

6. Can I swim at Diamond Beach?

Sadly, no. You shouldn’t try to swim when you visit Diamond Beach and many other beaches in Iceland. In fact, it’s best if you stay clear of the waterline as much as possible. The tides and currents by the south coast can change quickly and be very strong.

Another reason is that you might find it very cold. For example, in summer water temperatures average around 10°C (50°F). Definitely chilly!

If you’d like to take a dip while in Iceland, why not visit the Fontana spa in Laugarvatn? Or another great option is the Nauthólsvík geothermal beach in Reykjavík. You can even safely swim outside of the heated area.

  • Discover more swimming spots in our guide to Iceland’s spas & hot springs .

7. When is the best time to visit Diamond Beach?

As with most of the natural attractions of Iceland, you can see it at any time of the year. That said, if you’d like to drive there, the summer months are preferable. At this time the weather and driving conditions are more stable and predictable. You’ll also have more daylight to take advantage of.

  • Blog: Learn more about the best time to visit Iceland .

8. Can I see the Northern Lights at Diamond Beach?

Diamond Beach is a great spot to go chasing after the Northern Lights in winter. This is thanks to its location far from light pollution. The countryside is always better to catch sight of these dancing lights.

Find out more of the best places to spot the Northern Lights in Iceland .

Northern-Lights-in-Iceland-1.jpg.webp

You might find the darkness a bit of a challenge during winter nights. You don’t want to trip on the blocks of ice or wander too close to the water, so make sure you bring a flashlight. That way you can enjoy Diamond Beach nice and safely.

  • Browse Northern Lights packages in Iceland or winter self-drive tours .
  • Blog: All about Aurora Borealis .

Here is your friendly remember that Northern Lights are a natural phenomenon. They can only be seen on dark nights and there are no guaranteed sightings. If you’d like to hunt for the Aurora Borealis, travel to Iceland between October and March .

If you travel to Diamond Beach in the summer months, you can enjoy the midnight sun instead.

9. What should I pack and wear for Diamond Beach?

When visiting Iceland, you want to come prepared for all weather conditions.

To be safe and comfortable on your trip to Diamond Beach, you’ll want:

  • Sturdy walking shoes or boots, as the ground can be uneven
  • A waterproof jacket (and maybe trousers too) in case of rainy weather
  • Warm layers, including gloves, hat, and scarf

This way you’ll still be able to enjoy a walk on the beach, whatever the Icelandic weather has in store for you. And don’t forget your camera and tripod to capture the scenery and maybe even the Northern Lights in winter.

  • Blog: View our winter packing list .

Safety at Diamond Beach

Diamond Beach isn’t a particularly unsafe place to visit, but as on any other Icelandic beach, you should be sensible. Follow these safety tips:

  • Avoid the waterline not to get surprised by a wave
  • Watch your footing, so you don’t trip, as some icebergs can be concealed in the sand
  • Do not climb on an iceberg, they can be slippery or have sharp edges
  • And most importantly, never climb on floating ice, as this could be dangerous. This is true on the beach and at the glacier lagoon.

Other attractions to visit nearby

If you’re on a self-guided tour you could spend some time at nearby attractions at your leisure. The south coast of Iceland is studded with striking highlights, so you can take your pick.

  • Drive the entire south coast on one of these self-drive packages .

You won’t want to miss the Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon. Here you’ll witness the icebergs coming straight off the Breiðamerkurjökull glacier. Watch them float across the lagoon and slowly make their way to the Atlantic Ocean.

Jokulsarlon-glacier-lagoon-1.jpg.webp

To get a different perspective, book a boat tour onto the lagoon. You might even spot some seals lounging about on the ice.

You can’t be in the area and not spend some time in the Vatnajökull National Park. This is the largest national park in Iceland and is made up of one of the largest ice caps in all of Europe.

When you visit this area, you could go ice caving under the glacier. Or try snowmobiling or glacier walking atop Vatnajökull.

Iceland’s Diamond Circle: A Complete Guide for an Epic Road Trip

The Diamond Circle in Iceland is a not-to-be-missed loop drive. It’s in the northeast of Iceland and combines some of Iceland’s most stunning natural attractions with coastal views looking towards the Arctic Circle…all without the crowds elsewhere in Iceland!

Northern Iceland’s Diamond Circle is well-worth a spot on your Iceland itinerary!

The great news is that veering off-the-beaten-path in Iceland is risk-free. The island country will take your breath away at every turn. The more you venture away from the popular Golden Circle sights closer to Reyjkavik, the more Iceland will reward you for your adventurous efforts.

Read on for everything you need to plan your time along the Diamond Circle!

diamond tours iceland

I traveled to Iceland in May and drove the Ring Road. In all honesty, I spent a few days deciding if I should stay in southern Iceland and focus my time there. But, the more I researched, the more I wanted to visit the north of Iceland, too.

In particular, the Diamond Circle caught my eye because there were so many spectacular things to see and do in a relatively compact area.

Where is the Diamond Circle?

Located in the northeastern part of Iceland, the Diamond Circle includes popular base towns like Myvatn and Husavik. Akureyri is the capital of Iceland’s north and is just 50 miles west of Myvatn.

The absolute best way to get to this part of Iceland and explore the Diamond Circle is by car. The little public transportation there is in this part of Iceland doesn’t generally cater to visitors by stopping at touristic places or driving scenic routes like the Diamond Circle.

Car rentals are widely available at the Reyjkavik airport and will be the most convenient way to maximize your time throughout your entire trip to Iceland.

Camper vans are also quite popular to rent and allow you to live and sleep out of the van while road tripping in Iceland.

Iceland Diamond Circle Map

It’s always better to have a visual! This Diamond Circle Map is available for free at hotels and points of interest in the area.

Diamond Circle Iceland Map

Diamond Circle Route

If you’re driving Route1-Ring Road in a counterclockwise direction (what I did and recommend), then you’d turn right onto Route 862 to begin this loop drive and eventually get onto Route 85 until meeting back up with Ring Road. (Alternatively, you’d use Route 864 if you were planning to see the east sides of the Dettifoss and Selfoss waterfalls. More on this in a moment.)

If you’re coming from the opposite direction, you’d turn left onto Route 85 first to make your way up past Husavik and around the coast before heading south on either Routes 862 or 864.

The downside to this is you’ll be driving on the opposite side of the coastline, with the lane of opposite direction traffic potentially blocking photo opportunities and making turns to pull off a bit trickier.

Even though I was driving Ring Road in a counterclockwise direction, I continued on to Myvatn first and spent some time exploring the sights in and around town before staying at this Myvatn hotel for the night. The next morning I drove east towards Route 862 because Dettifoss Waterfall was to be my first stop of the day along the Diamond Circle.

What Kind of Car is Necessary to Drive the Diamond Circle?

diamond tours iceland

You don’t need a 4WD to drive the Diamond Circle. Route 1-Ring Road, Route 85, and Route 862 are paved roads.

However , if you decide to visit the east side of the Dettifoss and Selfoss Waterfalls, you’ll need to drive Route 864 which is a rough, pot-hole marked, gravel road. I would only drive this particular route with a 4WD. You could easily bottom out with a low-to-the-ground car, not to mention suffer tire or window damage. This Iceland travel tips guide has more information about car types and driving in Iceland.

Past these 2 best waterfalls in Iceland , continuing on this road to Asbrygi Canyon, you’ll find the road conditions get worse from the previous section.

Also, keep in mind, Route 864 closes for winter and doesn’t generally re-open until summer. This website shows real-time information about Iceland roads, their conditions, and whether or not a road is open or closed.

ProTip: If you decide to drive Route 864, remember to factor in extra time. These rough, gravel roads often mean you can only travel at very slow speeds. Think 5-15mph. The distance may be short but the time spent driving can really cut into your Diamond Circle itinerary.

Diamond Circle Timing Logistics

At only 155 miles, you could certainly drive the Diamond Circle in a day. But, I’d recommend spending at least 1 night in the area if you can. There are accommodations in towns like Myvatn, Akureyri, and Husavik, as well as other guest houses and hotels in the area.

The Diamond Circle loop is best driven in the late spring and summer. You’ll have 18+ hours of daylight to drive and explore the sights along this spectacular drive.

Visiting northern Iceland is also best from mid-May to September because the winter snow will likely have (mostly) melted away.

Snow melts faster in the south of Iceland than it does up north. It’s not uncommon to have popular places like Skogafoss Waterfall and the Waterfall Way hiking trail above it turning green as plants come out of their winter slumber. While up north, the trail leading to the viewpoint on the west side of Dettifoss can be completely covered by a couple of inches of snow.

Where to Stay on the Diamond Circle

diamond tours iceland

There are a few central points along the Diamond Circle on the northern coast of Iceland with hotels and guest houses. I recommend basing yourself in a town so you are closer to services like gas and food.

Depending on your Diamond Circle itinerary, more than 1 base may make sense. For example, you might choose to stay in Myvatn and day trip the Diamond Circle before finishing in Akureyri. Or you might choose to split the Diamond Circle over several days and use Husavik as a stop for the night before continuing on towards Akureyri the next day.

I stayed 1 night in Myvatn and then another night in Akureyri. This allowed enough time to visit the places along the Diamond Circle and in this stretch of northeastern Iceland, while still keeping my progress steady around Ring Road.

Myvatn Hotels

Sel hotel myvatn.

This hotel is located right off Ring Road/Route 1 across from Lake Myvatn and the Pseudocraters. Dimmuborgir is a 10-minute drive from the hotel. If you’re lucky to have a room facing the road like we were, you’ll have beautiful views of the lake and craters.

The rooms are spacious, clean, and comfortable. A full complimentary breakfast with lots of options is served each morning and the hotel’s restaurant is open for dinner in the evenings. We ordered personal pizzas and loved them! There’s also a gas pump right next to the hotel which is perfect when you want to refuel before setting off for the day. If you have an electric vehicle, there are plugs available to plug in and recharge.

Fosshotel Myvatn

This upscale property is situated on the northern side of Lake Myvatn, in close proximity to Myvatn’s natural attractions. The hotel serves a full complimentary breakfast and offers dinner in the evenings. The large windows in the dining room and near the bar offer a great view of Lake Myvatn and the surrounding landscapes.

The modern rooms with comfortable beds offer storage and a seating area. Some rooms come with gorgeous lake views and outdoor seating space. As with most locations on the north coast of Iceland along the Diamond Circle, Fosshotel can be a great spot to watch for the Northern Lights in winter.

Husavik Hotels

Fosshotel husavik.

As you drive through Iceland, you’ll notice many Fosshotels. They are a well-known chain of hotels around the country. Husavik has one of those Fosshotel locations. The hotel is an 8-minute walk to Husavik Harbor, the place where Husavik whale watching tours depart and where you’ll find the Husavik Whale Museum and the town’s harborside restaurants.

The hotel offers free parking and a restaurant on-site. The rooms are cozy, yet modern. Some rooms offer views of the fjord and Skjalfandi Bay. In the mornings, breakfast is available.

Akureyri Hotels

Hafdals hotel.

This is my top choice in Akureyri! In fact, it was my favorite stay during my entire trip to Iceland. This small hotel is situated on a hill overlooking the beautiful bay and fjord. The town of Akureyri is just down the hill and across the bridge, about a 5-minute drive away. We quickly and easily ordered take-out from a restaurant in town and brought it back to the room.

The rooms are spacious and clean, with views overlooking the bay. Our room had chairs just outside meant for watching the sunset over the bay. (Unfortunately, we got a very cloudy day.) The complimentary breakfast was fantastic, with plenty of options. In particular, too, the owner was so kind and helpful. He talked us through a few questions we had about our day’s drive and also offered some local secrets about places to visit on Iceland’s north coast.

Hotel Kea by Keahotels

Situated in the center of Akureyri, Hotel Kea has a prime location for walking around the town. Free street parking is available from the hotel, along with a complimentary breakfast each morning.

The rooms are decent-sized, some with views of the church and town. There’s a restaurant on-site that serves dinner. The outdoor patio is a great spot in the warmer months to sit with a drink from the hotel bar.

Diamond Circle Best Things to See and Do

Myvatn and lake myvatn area.

In and around the village of Myvatn, there are several places to see and explore. Depending on how you plan your Diamond Circle itinerary, Myvatn can make a good place to spend the night.

I arrived in the Myvatn area just after noon and spent time visiting the sites listed below, taking advantage of the long hours of daylight.

Krafla Viti Crater

diamond tours iceland

This crater, a few miles from Myvatn with a turn just off Route 1, was formed during a years-long volcanic eruption and explosion. What makes this crater different from others you may see in Iceland is that it’s filled with blue water. Combine this with the crater’s large size and the mountains and steam vents in the backdrop and you’ll yet again be in awe of Iceland’s magical landscape.

There’s a rim walk that starts just near Kafla Viti Crater’s parking area. The walk is easy and shouldn’t take more than an hour. You can also choose to walk down into a geothermal area beneath the rim. Be mindful of any signs warning against the heat of the geothermal area. They are to be believed!

Hverir Geothermal Area

diamond tours iceland

If by this point Iceland hasn’t made you feel like you’re on another planet, this steaming, bubbling site will surely transport you. This active geothermal area is just off Ring Road, east of Myvatn. In fact, it’s an easy stop to make on your way to the Myvatn area.

This site sits below the Namafjall volcanic mountain, as part of the Namaskard geothermal area. The site is pocked with hot mud pits, vents that release heat from the depths of the Earth, boiling sulfur springs, and fumaroles. (Not to be mistaken for the much more delightful smelling profiterole.)

The site is free to visit, with a large parking area just off Route 1 (aka Ring Road). There is a ground loop you can walk which should take about 30 minutes. Just be sure to have some mints or a nose/mouth covering if you’re particularly sensitive to the smell of sulfur.

Myvatn Nature Baths

diamond tours iceland

Many visitors rush to the popular Blue Lagoon outside of Reyjakavik, but Iceland has many places to enjoy a thermal bath including in the north! Given the high amount of geothermal activity in the Lake Myvatn area, it’s probably not surprising to find hot springs listed as one of the main attractions in the Diamond Circle area.

The lagoon at the Myvatn Nature Baths has turquoise, mineral-rich water that’s great for the skin, among other health benefits. It’s a great way to relax and rejuvenate (away from the crowds at the Blue Lagoon!) while taking in the gorgeous views of the Myvatn area. If you’re there at the right time, you can watch the sunset and then cross your fingers for a chance to see the northern lights dance across the sky.

diamond tours iceland

Grjotagja is a cave used as a setting for Game of Thrones. The thermal springs inside the cave are too hot for bathing and unfortunately have been mistreated by visitors. The cave sits on private land so if you visit, please be respectful. Stay out of the water for your own safety and the natural beauty of the cave. And also remember to leave no trace. , the pseudo craters near Lake Myvatn, and Dimmuborgir, a lava field with other-worldly caves and rock formations.

diamond tours iceland

Not far from Grjotagja and the eastern shores of Lake Myvatn, Hverfjall volcanic crater is hard to miss. It’s more than a half-mile wide and rises up 1,300 feet. It’s the result of a massive eruption thousands of years ago.

There are 2 designated trails to the rim of the crater. The hike to the top isn’t long but be prepared for a moderate climb with loose gravel. Once at the top, you can walk the entire perimeter of the crater. It’s roughly 2 1/2 miles around. However, the views are the main draw! You’ll be able to see over Lake Myvatn, Dimmuborgir, and the surrounding area.

ProTip: Bring trekking poles to help with the hike to the rim of the crater, especially for the way down which can be even harder on the knees. Plus, they’re bound to come in handy for other hikes in Iceland, too!

Dimmuborgir

diamond tours iceland

Iceland is full of places you can’t see anywhere else in the world. Dimmuborgir is no exception! This volcanic area was the sight of a massive eruption thousands of years ago. Today, what’s left behind are black lava rock formations and caves, with “the church” being the most famous lava creation. Over the years, plants have crept back to life in the mineral-rich soil creating an eerie landscape full of Icelandic folklore.

Dimmuborgir is located on the eastern side of Lake Myvatn, just a few minutes’ drive from the area’s hotels and services. It’s free to visit and walk the trails. The trails are well-marked with signage and mostly flat. A few of the walks take less than an hour to complete. The landscape is both beautiful and unearthly with the lake as a backdrop.

As with a few of the other natural sites in the Myvatn area, you don’t need a lot of time to visit Dimmuborgir. On longer days, you could visit even if you only arrive in the Myvatn area in the afternoon.

Skutustadagigar

diamond tours iceland

Nicknamed the Pseudocraters because they are crater-shaped formations but did not form as a result of actually being volcanoes. Still, they’re impressive to look at while you’re in the Lake Myvatn area and honestly hard to miss if you’re by the lake or driving through the Myvatn area. The pseudocraters are quite close to the road and have a parking lot. From the Sel Hotel Myvatn, I had a clear view of them just across the street.

There are some walking trails that will lead you around and in between the craters. As with so many natural phenomenons in Iceland, it’ll be hard to put your camera down! And, if you’re short on time, no worries. You can get a sense of the pseudocraters by walking the loop path in just half an hour or so.

Dettifoss waterfall

diamond tours iceland

This powerful waterfall is the second most powerful in all of Europe and truly one of the most impressive in all of Iceland. Dettifoss is more than 300 feet wide and drops almost 150 feet down into the Jokulsargljufur Canyon. Even if you can’t wrap your head around more than 6,000 cubic feet of water (44k+ gallons) falling every second, your feet will feel the ground quaking beneath them the closer you get to Dettifoss.

There are 2 sides to view Dettifoss. The west side of the Falls can be reached by Route 862 for most of the year. The road is paved and leads to a small Visitor’s Center and parking lot. From there, you can walk the trails that lead to Dettifoss. There is an upper viewing platform and a lower viewpoint. We were lucky to have a calm day when the winds weren’t blowing the mist and could clearly see Dettifoss from the viewing platform.

The lower viewpoint brings you closer to Dettifoss by way of a steep path. Know your limits and remember you must walk back up the trail to return to the parking area.

ProTip: You can also visit Dettifoss from the east side via Route 864. This viewpoint brings you thrillingly close to the Falls. However, the road is unpaved, rough, and open only at certain times of the year. Even in May the time of year I visited, this road was still snow-covered and closed. Check road conditions using the helpful websites listed below before setting out to visit Dettifoss to solidify your plan.

Selfoss Waterfall

diamond tours iceland

Just upstream from Dettifoss, you’ll find Selfoss, another beautiful Diamond Circle waterfall composed of numerous waterfalls spilling over rocks at various points forming a horseshoe shape. It’s wide in size like Dettifoss but the drops aren’t as tall. If you visit in the winter, some of the small pretty waterfalls along Selfoss’ flanks stop flowing. But, the larger area of waterfalls will flow in the distance.

If you’ve visited Dettifoss from the west side, it’s well worth the short walk down the paths to see Selfoss. As you walk back along the paths from Dettifoss towards the parking area, look for signage pointing towards Selfoss. Be careful as you follow the path parallel to the river. The Falls flow from many points as you approach so stay on the trail and watch for wet, slippery rocks.

You can also visit Selfoss from the east side. The trail is just as long from Dettifoss on the west side (about .6 of a mile) but with larger boulders that require some scrambling.

ProTip: Hafragilsfoss is another water downstream from Dettifoss. You can view these Falls from the east and west sides but it’s better from the east. There are signs as you drive away from the Dettifoss parking lot. Turn right (going north) back onto Route 862 and follow the signs. Keep in mind, this drive will take an hour, but will also land you close to the east sides of Dettifoss and Selfoss if you wanted to see those Falls from both sides. As before, check the status and conditions of Route 864.

If you choose to view Hafragilsfoss from the west side, the drive is just a few minutes from Dettifoss. However, the viewpoint is a few miles away from the Falls.

Asbyrgi Canyon

diamond tours iceland

Looking out at this spectacular horseshoe-shaped canyon, you can’t help but marvel at the power of nature. (Admittedly, you’ll be doing this throughout your trip to Iceland.) The canyon is part of Vatnajokull National Park and spans more than half a mile wide and  2+ miles long. Perhaps even more impressive are the 330 feet tall cliffsides!

During the summer months, the insides of the canyon turn green from the trees that make up its center woodlands. Not surprisingly, this is also the best time to visit the canyon. There are hiking trails for all abilities and in a range of durations, including multi-day hikes. Even if you have only a short amount of time for your visit, plan to hike! It’s the best way to see Asbyrgi Canyon. Longer hikes lead to the popular Botnstjorn Pond at the end of the canyon. But, even shorter hikes come with great views of the canyon.

Here’s a map of the Asbyrgi Canyon hikes . The blue-marked trails like A2 and A3 are easy, while the red-marked trails like A4 and A7-9 are more difficult.

The Visitor’s Center is located just off Route 85 in between the northern ends of Routes 862 and 864. Route 85 is open all year, even in snowy conditions, although it’s always best to check road conditions first. There’s a turn from Route 85 onto Route 861 for a short section of road before reaching the parking area. Keep in mind, the Visitor’s Center is primarily open from May to October.

ProTip: As you travel on Route 85 towards Husavik, stop at the Hringsbjarg Cliffs scenic overlook. The observation deck offers information about the area and sweeping views of north Iceland. You might even get lucky and spot a Puffin if you visit during nesting season.

Husavik Iceland

The seaport village of Husavik is on Route 85 of the Diamond Circle. It’s nicknamed “the whale watching capital of Iceland” and with good reason. The waters of Skjalfandi Bay in Husavik harbor are home to many species of marine life, including whales like the Humpback!

This Arctic Circle-facing town may be small in size but it comes with outsized value for your time. In fact, you could easily plan to spend 1 night in Husavik and pick up your Diamon Circle loop drive the next morning. Most visitors come to Husavik for the aforementioned whale watching. Quite simply, it’s a must-do in Husavik. My Husavik whale watching tour was easily one of my most favorite things to do in Iceland.

While in town, visit Husavik’s Whale Museum, with a full-sized skeleton of a Blue Whale, the largest mammal to have lived. The wooden church in town is postcard-perfect, as are the restaurants and shops lining the harbor. Gamli Baukur along the port has fantastic local seafood dishes!

You can even escape the crowds of the Blue Lagoon and, instead, relax in the Geothermal Sea Baths on the cliffs overlooking Skjalfandi Bay!

Godafoss Waterfall

diamond tours iceland

South of Husavik and west of Myvatn, the spectacular Godafoss waterfall plunges nearly 40 feet into the river below before winding its way through the canyon. What makes this “waterfall of the gods” so impressive is its horseshoe shape and falls that span roughly 100 feet wide.

Without question, Godafoss is one of the most beautiful sights to see in all of Iceland…a statement not made lightly on an island of immeasurable natural beauty. Even if you don’t plan to drive the entire Diamond Circle, don’t miss seeing Godafoss up close!

Getting to Godafoss is straightforward and clearly marked. Although if you’re driving in northern Iceland in the winter, you’ll want a 4-wheel drive vehicle and to always check the road conditions before driving. Godafoss is just off Ring Road about 35 minutes from Myvatn to the east and the city of Akureyri to the west.

There are parking areas and paths leading you closer to the falls for easy access. There are viewing points on both sides of the waterfall. If you have the time, take in the view from both sides.

North Iceland is a Must!

While other parts of Iceland continue to get the most love, northern Iceland, and in particular, the Diamond Circle has arguably some of the most spectacular sights in all of Iceland!

As you plan your Iceland itinerary, don’t miss the opportunity to spend a few days driving Iceland’s Diamond Circle.

Iceland offers countless destinations filled with natural beauty. But, with little time in hand, it is quite impossible to cover all the spots. When in North Iceland, the Diamond Circle offers all the best attractions to explore. So, we have curated an interesting Diamond Circle tour for you – pickup available from Akureyri or Lake Myvatn in North Iceland. In this tour, we will let you explore the renowned spots in the company of a local guide to make the trip more interesting. Read more to get a brief of the spots we are going to discover.

Selfoss waterfall in north Iceland

The trip will begin with a drive along the longest fjord of Iceland, Eyjafjordur up to Goðafoss waterfall . The first stop is the mighty Goðafoss waterfalls, also famous as the ‘Waterfall of Gods.’ This place is one of Iceland’s pearls due to its strong gushing waters cascading along the rocks with a roaring sound – a truly heaven-like experience. Goðafoss waterfall is fed by the Skjálfandafljót river and it holds a mystic tale behind its name. Legends say that it is known as the waterfall of Gods due to its God-like structure.

Lake Myvatn in north Iceland

Proceeding to the next stop, Lake Myvatn , a lake formed because of a basaltic lava eruption 2300 years ago. This area is enriched with flora and fauna and unbelievably amazing sights. We will stop here to pick up passengers that are joining us from this location. We will have enough time to explore and take some photos of the beautiful lake and surrounding areas.

Dettifoss Waterfall & Selfoss waterfall

Dettifoss waterfall in North Iceland, the most powerful waterfall in Europe

After visiting Lake Myvatn we move on to the next powerful waterfall, Dettifoss Waterfall , which is the most powerful waterfall in entire Europe. The thunderous water from the Dettifoss falls into Jökulsárgljúfur canyon at a height of 150 feet. One of the true wonders of Iceland, this waterfall is a must-visit place during Diamond circle tours. Within the canyon, you will be treated with another waterfall, Selfoss , whose height may be less, but its width is approximately 100 meters. If you get too close to the waterfall, you will probably get wet and also one must take caution near the waterfall as the rocks are slippery.

Jökulsárgljúfur canyon in north Iceland

When traveling in the area, you are actually traveling in Vatnajokull National Park . This Park covers a massive area of 5,460 square miles, making it the 2nd largest park in Europe. Vatnajokull National Park was established in the year 2008 and since then it has attracted tourists from all over the world. This national park is also home to the largest glacier in Europe, Vatnajökull. When traveling in the National Park you will get to see the Jokulsargljufur Canyon and river that has been carved out of the Vatnajokull glacier due to the floods.

Hljodaklettar in north Iceland

Here comes a fun and less visited place, Hljodaklettar Echo Cliffs , also named as ‘The Whispering Cliffs.’ Hljodaklettar is a bunch of crater plugs, formed due to the remains of old volcanoes. They have different basaltic columns, which are a wondrous sight to see. The cliffs will offer you numerous patterns – honeycombs, spirals, swirls, and much more. The name of the cliffs is derived from the strange sound that the caves and rock formations create.

Ásbyrgi canyon in North Iceland, horseshoe shape canyon in Iceland

Asbyrgi Canyon is another amazing place to admire. It is one of the most unique places in Iceland and so different from all the other attractions that you will see on your trip. This horseshoe-shaped depression started to form after the Ice Age, ten million years ago. Icelandic folklore states that the shape of this canyon is because of Odin’s 8-legged steed, Sleipnir, which placed his feet on the ground leaving a huge imprint behind. We will walk around the Canyon for some amazing views. As we continue our tour, we will stop by the Tjornes Peninsula Cliffs, a place that welcomes during the summer season.

GeoSea sea baths in Húsavík

Book GeoSea Geothermal baths in North Iceland

A special add-on to make this trip more amazing is GeoSea sea baths in Husavik. This is an amazing infinity pool filled with mineral-rich water beneficial for the skin. Goðafoss Waterfalls

Prepare to be captivated by the sheer magnificence of Goðafoss, a true gem among Icelandic waterfalls. Standing at an impressive height of 12 meters and stretching 30 meters wide, it exudes a breathtaking beauty that few falls in Iceland can rival. As you explore the walking trails that wind their way around this natural wonder, you’ll be treated to an unforgettable display of elemental power and serene elegance.

But Goðafoss is more than just a stunning waterfall—it holds immense cultural and historical significance in the hearts of Icelanders. Translating to “Waterfall of the Gods” in Icelandic, its very name evokes the ancient tales and mythologies that have shaped the nation. Legend has it that over a millennium ago, an influential chieftain, moved by a momentous decision to steer his people toward Christianity, performed a symbolic act of transformation at this sacred site. He cast aside the remnants of the old pagan gods, plunging them into the rushing waters of Goðafoss. In that single act, Goðafoss became a living testament to the pivotal Christianization of Iceland—a tangible embodiment of the country’s spiritual evolution.

Soak in the ambiance and let your imagination wander as you stand before Goðafoss, taking in its grandeur from multiple vantage points along the enchanting trails. Every step unveils new perspectives, each one revealing a different facet of its majestic allure. Be sure to savor this extraordinary moment, for it is a gateway to the wonders that lie ahead on our exhilarating journey through the Diamond Circle.

Ásbyrgi Canyon

Prepare to be awe-inspired as we venture into the heart of Ásbyrgi Canyon, a mesmerizing horse-shoe-shaped valley that beckons with its natural wonders. As our Diamond Circle tour continues, this remarkable destination unveils its awe-inspiring grandeur. Brace yourself for an encounter with nature’s breathtaking masterpiece.

Spanning an astonishing width of 1 kilometer and stretching 4 kilometers in length, Ásbyrgi Canyon is a testament to the sheer scale and immensity of Iceland’s landscapes. Surrounding this magical realm are towering, vertical cliffs that stand guard with a commanding presence, reaching heights of up to 100 meters. Prepare to feel dwarfed by their imposing magnificence, as they create a dramatic embrace around a picturesque forest and an idyllic pond. The sheer beauty of this enchanting panorama is simply indescribable.

The cliffs of Ásbyrgi Canyon serve as both a sanctuary and a stage for a variety of avian life. Delicate and resilient, many bird species have made their homes within the hidden nooks and crannies of these rugged rocky walls. Listen to the melodic symphony of their calls and witness their graceful flights as they navigate this natural labyrinth. It’s a sight that will leave you in awe of the intricate balance of life that thrives within these majestic cliffs.

But Ásbyrgi Canyon isn’t just a geological wonder; it also holds a place in the tapestry of Icelandic folklore. According to ancient tales, the distinctive shape of this canyon was forged by the mighty Sleipnir, the legendary eight-legged horse of Norse mythology’s revered god, Odin. Legend has it that with one thunderous stomp of his hoof, Sleipnir left an indelible mark on the land, carving out this extraordinary canyon. It’s a testament to the mythical origins that permeate every inch of Iceland’s awe-inspiring landscapes.

While folklore adds a touch of enchantment to Ásbyrgi Canyon’s story, geologists offer a different perspective. They posit that this geological masterpiece is the result of colossal glacier flooding, unleashed by the powerful river Jökulsá á fjöllum—the very same river that gifts us the magnificent Dettifoss waterfall. It’s a reminder of the raw forces that shaped this land, leaving behind a natural wonder that continues to awe and inspire.

As you step foot into Ásbyrgi Canyon, let the enormity of its cliffs, the serenity of its forest, and the whispers of its avian inhabitants transport you to a realm where nature’s grandeur and mythical tales intertwine in perfect harmony. This is a place where dreams are woven, where legends come to life, and where the true essence of Iceland’s untamed beauty reveals itself.

Prepare to have your senses ignited as you draw near to the majestic Dettifoss. With each step, anticipation dances in the air, electrifying the atmosphere with irresistible energy. You find yourself mesmerized by the sheer magnitude of this watery titan, defying gravity as it plummets down a towering 44-meter drop. The deafening roar engulfs you, stirring a primal instinct deep within your soul.

Dettifoss is no ordinary waterfall—it is a force of nature unmatched in its breathtaking might. With an astonishing volume of 193 cubic meters of water per second, it has rightfully earned its title as the most powerful waterfall in all of Europe. Its relentless surge, fueled by the convergence of rivers and the mighty Vatnajökull glacier, unveils a display of nature’s fury that commands both respect and admiration.

Prepare to be swept away by the allure of Dettifoss, a mesmerizing icon that has captivated the world’s imagination. Its magnetic pull has drawn adventurers and explorers from far and wide, seeking to witness its extraordinary grandeur firsthand. From its prominent appearance in Ridley Scott’s epic masterpiece, Prometheus, to its rise as a symbol of untamed beauty, Dettifoss has claimed its rightful place in the annals of natural wonders.

In the presence of Dettifoss, time seems to stand still. The world around you fades into insignificance as you become one with the roaring cascade. It’s a moment of transcendence, where the power of nature merges with your own sense of wonder, leaving an indelible mark on your very being.

Unleash your adventurous spirit, surrender to the intoxicating allure of this natural marvel, and let its overwhelming beauty leave an everlasting imprint on your heart and soul. Get ready to immerse yourself in the extraordinary narrative of Dettifoss—a saga of untamed power, unrivaled magnificence, and boundless wonder.

But there’s more to Húsavík’s allure than meets the eye. This coastal gem has captivated the attention of the world, basking in the spotlight of recent years. Iceland’s Diamond Circle: A Guide

What is the Diamond Circle in Iceland?

The Diamond Circle showcases some of northern Iceland’s magnificent waterfalls, geothermal, and volcanic sites. It consists of Goðafoss waterfall, Mývatn lake, Dettifoss waterfall, Ásbyrgi canyon, and Húsavík fishing town. The Diamond Circle itself can be completed in a day, as the driving distance with Akureyri as a starting point is about 224 km [139 mi]. The total time will vary based on the time spent at each site. Guided excursions and tours are available, but you can also choose to explore The Diamond Circle independently, at your own pace. The roads connecting the Diamond Circle are paved.

We will start in Akureyri, the third-largest city in Iceland, with a population of 20,000. The 390 km drive to Akureyri from the capital area is quite simple, as you drive on the same road the whole way- Route 1 or the “Ring Road” as it’s often called.

Goðafoss Waterfall

From Akureyri, you will continue on Route 1 for about 34 km [21 mi] before turning right towards Goðafoss.

On the sightseeing platform, you can take in the panoramic view of this 12 m [39 ft] high, 30 m [98 ft] wide waterfall that runs from the glacial river Skjálfandafljót. Goðafoss waterfall is a historic site in Iceland. In the year 1,000, Þorgeir Þorkellsson, the lawmaker of Iceland, had concluded that Iceland should become a Christian country. Believing in the Norse gods was still allowed, but that religion had to be practised in one’s home. He is said to have gone to Goðafoss waterfall (translated as “Waterfall of the Gods”) and thrown his heathen idols into the water.

Goðafoss Waterfall, Iceland

The geothermal area of Mývatn Lake

Return to Route 1, turning right to keep driving towards Mývatn lake. 30 km [22 mi], turn left to stay on Route 1, following the Húsavík/Egilsstaðir/Fuglasafn sign. Shortly, you will see the lake and can pick a stop of your choosing along the route- there will be several.

Mývatn lake was formed about 2,300 years ago due to a volcanic eruption. With an area of approximately 73 km2 [28 mi2], it’s the fourth-largest lake in Iceland. Mývatn lake is known for its rich birdlife and its surrounding geothermal area, including hot springs and mud pots.

You may want to experience the Mývatn Nature Baths for a relaxing stop. To get to the baths, stay on Route 1. Following the sign for Egilsstaðir, turn left to continue on Route 1. Follow the signs for Jarðböðin við Mývatn (Mývatn Nature Baths) and enjoy the beauty of this geothermal lagoon. This area also has a cafe where you can stop by for a snack.

Dettifoss Waterfall

From the baths, turn right to continue on Route 1 for 23 km [14 mi]. Then, turn left towards Dettifoss on Route 862 and follow the signs for Dettifoss. You will arrive at a parking lot. From the lot, there will be about an 850 m [0.52 mi] walk to the viewpoint. Dettifoss waterfall is the most powerful waterfall in Europe, with a flow rate of 193 m3 [6,815 ft3]. Dettifoss is located in Vatnajökull National Park, and its water runs from the glacial river “Jökulsá á fjöllum” directly from Europe’s largest glacier, Vatnajökull. The waterfall is 44-45 m [144-147 ft] high and 100 m [328 ft] wide.

Ásbyrgi Canyon in North Iceland

Return to Dettifossvegur (Route 862) and turn right. When you approach the intersection of Route 862 and Route 85, turn right. Shortly, there will be a sign for Ásbyrgi canyon.

Ásbyrgi is a glacial canyon in the shape of a horseshoe. Like Dettifoss waterfall, it’s a part of Vatnajökull National Park. Ásbyrgi was formed due to a glacial flood from Jökulsár á fjöllum river during a volcanic eruption in Grímsvötn volcano. Ásbyrgi is about 3.5 km [2.2 mi] long and 1.1 km [0.7 mi] wide. In the middle stands a large 25 m [82 ft] high rock formation called Eyjan (The Island), emphasising the canyon’s horseshoe shape. Its surrounding cliffs are about 100 m [328ft] high. You can choose from several hiking trails with stunning panoramic views along the way.

Húsavík: Whale Watching Capital of Iceland

To get to Húsavík from Ásbyrgi, drive back towards Route 85 and make a left. The drive is 62 km [38 mi] long. Húsavík is a small fishing town in Skjálfandi bay, with a population of about 2,300. It is home to The Exploration Museum, The Whale Museum and Húsavík Museum. The Húsavík Museum is a cultural centre displaying the historic exhibitions “Daily Life and Nature-100 years in Þingeyjarsýslur” as well as the “Maritime Museum” . This picturesque town is a prime whale-watching destination, offering tours to see some of the 23 species of whales. Húsavík has several restaurants and cafes with a beautiful view of the harbour.

Akureyrarkirkja Church, Akureyri Iceland

Back to Akureyri

To return to Akureyri, drive south on Route 85 for 45 km [28 mi] until you hit Route 1. Make a right and continue for 30 km [19 mi] following the signs for Akureyri.

From the trembling power of Dettifoss waterfall to the tranquillity of Mývatn lake, the Diamond Circle is a great route to experience the distinct beauty of northern Iceland. It unveils the region‘s geological wonders of volcanic and geothermal areas, waterfalls, and cultural sites, making the trip an exciting adventure for any explorer.

Diamond Circle Travel Guide

Dettifoss is an attraction on the Diamond Circle.

The Diamond Circle is a famed 260 kilometre (162 mile) sightseeing route in the northeast of Iceland, characterised by its sheer number of natural attractions, picturesque settlements and fantastic landscapes.

The Diamond Circle is available for those who wish to drive the route themselves, as well as those who would prefer to partake in a guided tour of the region.

It is considered the northeastern alternative to the popular Golden Circle sightseeing route, which is reached by travelling for forty minutes from Iceland’s capital, Reykjavík , and comprised of the three major sites Þingvellir National Park , Geysir Geothermal Valley and Gullfoss Waterfall .

The route’s four main attractions are Lake Mývatn , Europe’s most powerful waterfall, Dettifoss , the horseshoe-shaped canyon, Ásbyrgi and the fishing town of Húsavík , known primarily for its fantastic whale watching opportunities.

Lake Mývatn

Lake Mývatn is one of the most popular sites of the north; it is a favourite location for birdwatchers in particular, who can see dozens of species year round.

The lake area is also known for its flora, being home to rare moss balls and many wildflowers, and its geology. This takes the form of basalt pillars rising from the waters, pseudocraters surrounding them, and the lava fortress of Dimmuborgir .

Dimmuborgir is a dramatic and beautiful location, used as a setting for the Game of Thrones franchise. In folklore, it is said to be home to the thirteen Icelandic Yule Lads

Diamond Circle

Dettifoss is the most powerful waterfall in Europe, found in the Jökulsá á Fjöllum river in the Jökulsárgljúfur Canyon , which is part of the great Vatnajökull National Park . It is 40 metres (131 feet) tall and over 100 metres (328 feet) wide.

Dettifoss is one of three waterfalls in the river; Selfoss is just a little upstream, while Hafragilsfoss is downriver.

Ásbyrgi

The horseshoe shaped canyon of Ásbyrgi is so perfectly formed that one could be forgiven for thinking it has divine origins. This is, in fact, what old Icelanders used to believe; according to legend, it was created when one of the hoofs of the eight-legged horse of the god Oðin made contact with the earth.

The land within the canyon is well-forested, due to the shelter that the sheer cliffs provide.

Húsavík

Húsavík is often nicknamed ‘the whale-watching capital of Europe’, due to the wealth of life in its waters. Most tour operators boast 100 percent sighting rates on their tours throughout summer, with the most common species being humpback whales and white-beaked dolphins.

Over twenty species of cetacean, however, are found in Iceland’s waters, and there is a chance of seeing any of them, depending on the time of year, from the town. Blue whales, for example, have been seen in summer, and some rather lost Narwhals and Belugas have been seen in winter.

Other Sites

Other sites on the Diamond Circle include the likes of Goðafoss Waterfall , Æðafossar (“Eider Falls”), Hljóðaklettar (“Echo rocks” or “The Whispering Cliffs”) and Laugar swimming pool.

Do note, however, that not all tour operators travel to each of these attractions. If you are looking to visit each location individually, with nothing missed, it is recommended to drive the sightseeing route yourself.

Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon & Diamond beach

diamond tours iceland

Jökulsárlón is a large glacial lagoon (and the deepest lake in Iceland) located at the foot of the Vatnajökull glacier. As the glacier reaches the lowland areas, it retreats and melts, creating a lagoon. The lagoon is filled with giant icebergs that float slowly towards the ocean from the glacier. The icebergs are pretty varied in size and shape. The biggest ones can be as large as 20 to 30 meters. As the glacier "calves" and new icebergs enter the lagoon, it changes its appearance all the time.

The black sand beach where the icebergs are washed ashore by the waves is called the Diamond beach. Together these two attractions are probably the most photographed natural attractions in Iceland. Jökulsarlon has deserved the nickname "the Crown Jewel of Iceland."

Jokulsarlon glacier lagoon and Diamond beach have become world-famous as they have appeared in Hollywood movies such as James Bond, Batman Begins, and Tomb Raider.

diamond tours iceland

Seljalandsfoss is one of Iceland’s most famous waterfalls. It is very photogenic as it plunges over 60m into a shallow pool. The river that feeds Seljalandsfoss originates at the magnificent volcano glacier, Eyjafjallajokull. But the main reason why this cascade is so unique is that you can walk behind the water flow and see the waterfall and the world from a new perspective. Bring your raincoat as you will get wet from the drizzle! (Please note that the path behind the cascade may be closed during winter as it gets too slippery and dangerous.)

diamond tours iceland

With 300 inhabitants, Iceland's southernmost village, Vík í Mýrdal, is the busiest settlement in a 150-km / 39 mi area on the South Coast. This vibrant little place is a typical Icelandic countryside village, with colorful houses, scenic views, and a teeny-tiny church on the top of a hill.

diamond tours iceland

Fjallsárlón lagoon is renowned for the shimmering icebergs that float in its waters. The vivid colors of the ice range from electric blue to crystal clear. Some of the icebergs are streaked with grey, caused by volcanic eruptions.

The icebergs often collide, releasing shuddering groans as they rub against one another. The acrobatic antics of Great Skua seabirds overhead and playful seals in the water make for an incredible show.

Pick-up starts at 7:00 am. You will be picked up from Bus Stop #12 (opposite Storm Hotel) or your selected pick-up location in Reykjavík. We will pick you up there within 30 minutes from the departure time. You can find directions to this location here .

Diamond Circle

The North of Iceland is best known for its great natural sights and beautiful landscape. Our tour leaves from Saltvík Farm near Húsavík and leads to the Lake Mývatn area, known for its volcanic features and countless numbers of wild breeding ducks. An optional whale watching tour concludes the circle of natural highlights on and off shore. A visit to the picturesque and mighty waterfall Goðafoss will be something to remember.

We ride on mainly soft riding tracks, ideal for riding “tölt”, the unique gait of the Icelandic horse. The first two days we will ride along the shore and over Hvammsheiði heath and cross the river Laxá. The next day will take us from the forested hillsides in Laxárdalur via the black sand deserts of Hólasandur to lake Mývatn, where boiling mud pools and eerie lava formations remind you of the active volcanic energy hidden beneath the surface. After a long day in the saddle, it is ideal to take a relaxing soak in the outdoor bathing facility with hot geothermal water at “Jarðböð”.  From there we will ride the next day towards the Gæsafjöll Mountains. Through an area covered with cracks and fissures from countless earthquakes and volcanic activity, the route leads towards the mountain cabin at Þeistareykir, a place with bubbling hot water and white clouds rising to the sky from the steam vents. We will spend the night at this magical place. On the last day we ride home to Saltvík, enjoying the terrific view over Skjálfandi bay!

The accommodation on this tour is in 2-4 pers. rooms with made-up beds at Saltvík holiday farm and one night in a cosy mountain hut at Þeistareykir (sleeping bags). At Saltvík farm our guests have access to hot tubs every evening to relax after long days in the saddle! Free wifi connection is also offered at Saltvík farm.

In the morning you leave your guesthouse to go to Eagle Air airport for a direct flight to Húsavík. Saltvík is only a 5 min. drive from the airport. At Saltvik, we start our ride after a short introduction to the Icelandic horses and their special gaits. We ride along the seaside of the arctic ocean north of Iceland enjoying a fantastic view out towards the arctic circle. A relaxing bath in a warm outdoor tub before dinner at Saltvik farm is well deserved after this first day of our journey!

Optional in the afternoon (80 euros which includes transport from/to Saltvík): A whale watching tour starting from the harbor in Húsavík can be offered. Húsavík and the bay of Skjálfandi is known to be one of the best places in the world to find and see some of the gentle giants of the ocean. Humpbacks, Minky Whales, Dolphins and even Blue Whales are some of the creatures you can expect to see!

We ride across Hvammsheiði heathlands following excellent soft “tölttrails” and riverbanks of Mýrarhvísl river towards the big Laxá river which we cross at a passing were the river spreads out over 100 m wide riverpath! During the ride we enjoy great view over the green valleys of the north, Aðaldalur and Reykjadalur.

We saddle up at Aðalból farm and ride up along Laxárdalur before we leave the countryside and head up to the higher grounds of Hólasandur desert and the lava fields of Þeistareykjahraun. If lucky with the weather we enjoy amazing view to the Volcanoes all around. We ride through huge lupine fields and trough the lava on great riding tracks towards Þeistareykir geothermal area with hot springs all around. After the ride we head back with our little bus to Saltvík farm for staying overnight.

We start with a sightseeing tour by bus and visit some nice places around like the waterfall Goðafoss and the lavaformations Dimmuborgir at lake Mývatn. Then we drive up to Þeistareykir where our horses are waiting and ride for a day in the wilderness. We ride to the craters Litla Víti and Stóra Víti which are huge craters in the mountains with lava fields all around. This night we stay over at Þeistareykir mountain cabin and enjoy the evening at this amazing place in the highlands with our horses grazing outside.

The last day of our journey we ride home to Saltvík farm crossing the lavafields of Bóndhólshraun. Then following nice riding trails through the valley Geldingadalur and along Skarðaháls with a great view over the bay of Skjálfandi north of Iceland. The last track leads across Reykjaheiði back home to our farm Saltvík where we celebrate our adventures in the evening with a cheerful farewell party!

After a hearty breakfast, its time to drive with our small bus back to Reykjavík and enjoy the beautiful scenery on the way.
