In addition to the festivities already mentioned, Dinalupihan also offers major attractions for local and foreign tourists. These attractions include a) the St. John the Baptist Church which became part of the annual Visita Iglesia in Region 3; b) the Roosevelt Nature’s Park; c) the still undeveloped San Pablo Falls with water cascading from a huge spring at the top of Zambales Mountain; d) and the Mount Malasimbu Park or “Little Mount Mayon” where the annual Alay-Tanim (Nurture the Nature) project is held in August of each year.

a) DINALUPIHAN NATURE’S PARK

The Dinalupihan Nature’s Park is the former Roosevelt National Park. Situated in Barangay Roosevelt, it is accessible via the Gapan-Olongapo National Road. From a popular Boy Scout regional campsite, the area was transformed into an impressive inland resort, recreational facility and a bird and wildlife sanctuary. The park was named after the famous US President Franklin Delano Roosevelt who died on April 12, 1945, or immediately after the termination of the Battle of Zigzag Pass. It was used as a command post for the American troops during the Liberation and was designated as a hallowed ground after the war.

To preserve its historical significance, it was selected as one of the sites for the reforestation programs launched in Bataan in early 1960. Thus, it was transferred to the Reforestation Administration from the National Parks and Wildlife Office. In just a couple of years, Roosevelt Park had been restored to look as it did in the 1900s. From a ravaged area, the park was transformed into a lush forest. People started visiting Roosevelt which became known as Dinalupihan’s most frequented tourist spot. Camping, swimming in the river and nature’s trail became the favorite activities of the locals and foreigners, especially US Navy servicemen assigned in Subic Bay. Through the initiative of former Mayor Jose C. Payumo, Jr., Roosevelt Park became the regular home of the local Boy Scouts. Annual municipal and provincial jamborees were held in Roosevelt starting in 1964. It was even nominated to be the country’s BSP jamboree campsite. Unfortunately, Mount Makiling beat Roosevelt Park to the title. Prior to the holding of the last APEC Summit Meeting in Subic Bay in 1997, the Philippine Tourism Authority funded new development programs on the park. It was made possible through the initiative of Congressman Felicito C. Payumo and former Mayor Lucila P. Payumo. The 30-hectare Dinalupihan Nature’s Park offers a rest pavilion, clubhouse, amphitheater with stage, family cottages, tree houses, two VIP swimming pools, cottages, picnic sheds, conference rooms and a river lagoon. Six rows of food product stalls were also constructed in the area. In addition to ample parking, the parks takes pride in the peace and order situation in the area.

b) DINALUPIHAN SPORTS COMPLEX

The Dinalupihan Sports Complex is also known by another name: DINALUPIHAN CIVIC CENTER. It was inaugurated in 1992 and has become one of the major points of interest in the municipality. The complex is situated at the corner of Bonifacio and P. Dandan Streets, originally the site of the old municipal building and public market of Dinalupihan. It has a total land area of 5,000 square meters. It was former Congressman Felicito C. Payumo who thought of establishing a sports complex in the area. Using his congressional pork barrel as initial funding, the construction of the building was started in 1990. A total amount of P57 million was spent on the project which was completed and inaugurated in 1992. In addition to the regular sports competitions, the complex is currently being used for various community programs, concerts and cultural presentations, social gatherings, general assemblies and even birthday celebrations and wedding receptions.

Congressman Payumo used part of his congressional pork barrel to fulfill the need for a complete sports complex as requested by local government officials and educators. The new sports oval with grandstand was inaugurated in Dinalupihan, complete with special equipment for various participant sports. An Olympic-size swimming pool, the first in the province, was also built in the area. In time, Dinalupihan has become the favorite training ground of the various sports delegations in Bataan. The annual provincial meet is held at the said oval. With the establishment of the track and field oval, Bataan was able to host more regional sports meet then before.

d)LAYAC JUNCTION WAR MEMORIAL

The first Layac Junction War Memorial was a monument erected at the center of the rotunda in Layac, Dinalupihan in 1946. It symbolized the tragedy that befell Bataan and the gallantry of Filipino and American soldiers who restored democracy in the country. It was built by the 38th Infantry Division, of the United States Army, in memory of the defenders of Bataan who fought the Japanese Army in the area between December 1941 to February 1942. The monument also marked the total liberation of Dinalupihan and Bataan, in general, on February 25, 1945. It was especially dedicated to the following military units who participated in the so-called Battle of Zigzag Pass. The units include the 149th Infantry, 151st Infantry, 152nd Infantry, 113rd Engineer Combat Battalion, 38th Cavalry Reconnaissance Troop, 138th Field Artillery Battalion, 139th Artillery Battalion, 38th Field Artillery Battalion, 113th Medical Battalion, and the 38th Division Special Troop as well as the 38th Tank Company of Harrodburg, Kentucky which was involved in the 1942 Dinalupihan-Hermosa Defense Line.

Hiking guide: Mt. Malasimbu in Dinalupihan, Bataan

dinalupihan bataan tourist spots

In 2014, on our way to Magalawa Island in Zambales, 22-month old Lia and I saw a conical mountain along SCTEX. I wasn’t actively hiking that time yet, but I remembered being smitten by it and telling her, “Someday, we’ll go there”.

In the early days of March this year, we did.

Though Mt. Malasimbu is a famous Holy Week destination for pilgrims, it is often overshadowed by popular hiking favorites in Bataan like Tarak Ridge, Mt. Natib, and Mt. Samat. As one of the least known mountains in the province, detailed and accurate directions to Mt. Malasimbu are a rarity, and one must navigate her way to the jumpoff point without much help, even from puzzled locals. (Don’t fret. I’ve got detailed directions at the end of this post.)

dinalupihan bataan tourist spots

The eight-kilometer hike up the 411-meter high peak starts at Brgy. Barangay Bayan-Bayanan and passes through a local community of Aetas for about a kilometer or two. En route, there are streams that serve the community’s bathing and laundry needs.

After that, the trail consists of alternating forests and open grasslands that are reminiscent of Mt. Arayat and Tanay mountains, respectively. One of the first notable forested sections is a patch of land that houses mahogany trees ( Swietenia species). According to our guide, this was an initiative spearheaded by the owner of that parcel of land who is a Forestry graduate.

Decades ago, in an effort to “solve reforestation”, the DENR ordered that millions of mahogany seedlings from the Americas be planted in the country.

It’s saddening that this is still the thinking today, because the truth is, mahogany creates more problems than good. It is lethal to biodiversity. It’s not native to the Philippines, and it proves to be pestilent, quickly replacing other native timbers when planted. Mahogany does not bear fruits, so you won’t see birds seeking food or shade under it. Insects and beneficial fungi do not thrive where mahogany does, making that zone useless.

I’m sure everyone who plants trees have the best intentions, but not everyone is aware of the repercussions of planting foreign trees in the Philippines.

But I digress.

Onward to the summit, you will be negotiating some steep sections with loose soil, as well as gently ascending open grasslands that are similar to many open mountains in Rizal like Mt. Maynabu, Tangwa Peak, and Mt. Binutasan. Except in Holy Week when locals cut grass to ease the hike for pilgrims, overgrowth in these sections is terribly thick and long. So much so that in some parts, you won’t see the person in front or where the trail leads.

The overgrowth can easily derail climbers, which is a nightmare because the sun in this part of Bataan tends to be so intense it drains you within minutes. I am not exaggerating. There are three short sections like this – each around five to 10 minutes each – so it’s best to hike in the morning. Wear arm and leg protection while doing so.

The second grassland will afford you a view of nearby mountains, most prominently Mt. Samat-Samatan, which can also be accessed by the same route. According to our guide, while the summit of the mountain is higher than Mt. Malasimbu, it’s easier to trek, taking only a maximum of two hours (with a shortcut trail) on slow pacing.

We were told that there is a stream near the summit, and on it, a cross. The peak overlooks the plains of Bataan and Pampanga. We didn’t see this, however.

The searing heat amid thick and tall cogon grass proved to be too daunting for Lia that at 2:30 pm, we still had three kilometers to endure (plus five more on the way back). She had gulped down nearly two liters of our water. We had none left for the duration of the trail. We had to turn back, lest we want to get dehydrated.

On our way down, we swam in one of the streams with some Aeta kids. Afterwards, locals invited us to their home to eat birthday pancit while Lia played with their kids. Somebody gave me unused granny panties because I forgot to bring extra. The locals of Bayan-Bayanan are a true testament of trademark Filipino hospitality. It’s a refreshing experience to be reminded that the mountains are a place to relearn that.

At dinner, I asked Lia what she liked best about our hike. Her eyes beamed. “ Lahat! Happy ako sa lahat .” (Everything! I am happy with everything”) I guess she was. Not once did she ask for cellphone. We didn’t fight the entire day either. We were happy.

For most people, a successful hike is reaching the summit. For me though, a great hike is one that shows us wonders we don’t often see or hear. It’s one that takes us back to the primal joys of nature and makes us feel more alive. A successful hike is something that changes you, however small.

Our hike to Mt. Malasimbu wasn’t just a great hike. It was a success. In fact, thinking now about the years we waited to explore it, it’s a dream come true.

TRAVEL NOTES:

Best time to hike:

An early morning hike (around 4 to 5 am) is recommended to avoid the skin-braising heat of the sun. Bring flashlight.

How to get there and back via public transportation:

Board a bus from Manila or SM San Fernando (Pampanga) going to Olongapo. Take the one that goes to Dinalupihan, not the one that passes through SCTEX. There are various buses serving this route, including Saulog Transit, Arayat Express, Genesis, Bataan Transit, and Victory Liner. Fare is  P200+ (P75 if you are taking the bus from SM San Fernando). Travel time from Cubao is around 2 to 3 hours. Tell the driver to drop you off at Brgy. Pita in Dinalupihan. This is before Chowking. You will see a sign at the left that says “Gen. Luna”.

From there, take a tricycle going to the Brgy. Bayan-Bayanan barangay hall. Fare is P60. At the barangay hall, register and hire a guide. Guideship fee is not established yet, but P300 should be sufficient, since the hike normally takes only two to three hours (normal pace).

The first leg of the hike is mostly on concrete road. If you are lucky, tricycles are available in front of the barangay hall. You may ask one to take you to the tail end of the road, which is more or less at the store near the bigger stream. This can cut the hiking time by 30 to 45 minutes (even an hour if you are doing it really slow). Shouldn’t cost you more than P100 for a tricycle that can fit 3 to 4 people.

Tell the guide that you are taking the easier trail. If you fancy a more challenging hike, there’s another way to the summit which takes around 4 to 5 hours to complete and involves some scrambling on a cliffside. Not for those who have fear of heights, I reckon.

Going back to Manila:

You can hire a tricycle from the lot across the barangay hall going to either Plaza (P60) or Layac Junction (P80). I recommend going straight to Layac Junction since more Manila-bound buses (from Olongapo) pass by there.

Important note:  A few posts I read said you should get off at San Benito/ Pag-asa. Don’t. We took this route and had to pay P120 for a tricycle going to Bayan-Bayanan. There are no guides at Pag-asa, and they will also direct you to Bayan-Bayanan, since the trail from Maligaya (what they call the “long-cut” trail from Pag-asa) takes a lot longer.

Water source:

None What to bring:

Best to bring around 3 liters of water and a hat or an umbrella. There are open sections, which can get scorching hot. Parts of the trail also consists of loose soil, so shoes with good traction will come in handy.

Two important events in Philippine history are named after the province. First, the 3-month-long Battle of Bataan in 1942, which represented the most intense stage of the Japanese invasion of the Philippines during the war.

Second, the infamous Bataan Death March, wherein 72,000 American and Filipino war prisoners were forced to march between 60 and 69.6 miles from Bataan to Tarlac. As the name implies, thousands of Filipinos and hundreds of American prisoners-of-war died during the march.

Despite its tragic history, the province of Bataan is emerging as a must-visit ecotourism and historic destination in the Philippines. Today, visitors can enjoy turtle sanctuaries, birdwatching sites, majestic waterfalls, adrenaline-pumping hikes and treks, and a living museum of beautifully restored traditional homes.

A trip to Bataan feels like a trip back in time. It is a breathtaking destination where history meets the mountains and the sea. If this is your first time to visit the historical province, here is an ultimate guide to the best Bataan tourist spots that you can add to your itinerary.

The best time to visit Bataan is during the dry season

As a tropical country, the Philippines has only two seasons: the dry season and the wet season. In general, it is best to time your travels to the province of Bataan during the dry season (November to April), especially if you’re traveling by sea.

The Holy Week season in the Philippines (from March to April), is one of the best times to visit Bataan if you want to join the activities and immerse yourself in the local culture and traditions. However, expect that many Bataan tourist spots get crowded during this time.

May is the hottest month of the year in Bataan while January is the coldest. If you are planning a trek, do check the local weather. If you plan to go birdwatching, the best time to go is between October to March where migrating birds are of spotted starting at 6 o’clock in the morning.

Bataan is also famous for its turtle sanctuaries. If you want to see the turtle hatchlings released into the sea, set your Bataan trip during the last week of November to enjoy the week-long Pawikan Festival in Morong, Bataan.

At present, there are no direct flights from Manila to Bataan. If you’re flying in from outside Manila or Luzon, you can fly first to Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) in Manila or Clark International Airport in Pampanga. From there, you can ride land or sea transportation options.

Aerial view of SCTEX on the way to Bataan

You have the option to go to Bataan by private transport like a hired van or your own car, or a commuter bus.

The province of Bataan is about 124 kilometers away from Manila. This makes for a good 2.5-hour leisurely drive. It is best to leave early in the morning to avoid the rush hour gridlock.

From Manila, take the North Luzon Expressway then take the San Fernando toll exit or the Subic-Clark-Tarlac Expressway (SCTEX).

If you take the San Fernando toll exit, drive towards the Jose Abad Santos Avenue, formerly known as the Olangapo-Gapan Road. Drive all the way to Lubao, a municipality in Pampanga and Dinalupihan, a municipality in Bataan.

Once you get to the Layac junction, head towards the Roman Super Highway that will lead you to the city center of Balanga in Bataan.

If you’re taking the SCTEX route, simply take the Dinalupihan exit. Then make a right turn at Roman Super Highway towards the city center of Balanga.

If you don’t want to bring private transportation to Bataan, hopping on a bus from Manila is the most convenient way of traveling. Travel time by bus is roughly 3 hours from Manila to Bataan.

Several bus lines, including Genesis , Bataan Transit, Victory Liner , and Sinulog are found in Avenida (also known as Rizal Avenue) and Sampaloc in Manila, as well as in Pasay City, Caloocan City, and Cubao in Quezon City.

Victory Liner and Sinulog bus lines only pass by Dinalupihan in Bataan and go straight to Olongapo City in Pampanga instead of Balanga in Bataan. From Olongapo, you can take another bus that will take you to the city center of Balanga.

Major airlines fly to Clark International Airport in Pampanga daily. From the airport, hail a cab or take the bus going to the Dau Bus Terminal. From here, you can ride a UV Express, a van utilized as a form of public transportation, which would take you to Balanga City in Bataan.

If you want a fast way to go to Bataan, simply hop on the Manila-Bataan Ferry Boat at the Esplanade-Seaside Terminal in SM Mall of Asia in Pasay City. This will take you straight to Port Capinpin in Orion, a municipality in Bataan, in just 50 minutes!

Operated by 1Bataan Integrated Transport System. Inc. , the ferry boat travels three times a day from Manila to Bataan.

Colorful jeepney in Bataan, Philippines

Getting around Bataan is convenient thanks to a myriad of options for public transportation. There are jeepneys that travel between different towns in Bataan, as well as tricycles for shorter commutes.

If you didn’t bring a private car to Bataan, you can rent a car or a van as well.

Like a treasure map, the wonders of Bataan are just waiting to be explored. The tours in Bataan will walk you through the shrines, monuments, markers, and museums that echo the Filipino heroism during the war.

There’s also access to hidden coves, lagoons, beaches and more! If you’re planning a trip to Bataan soon, here are the top things to do in Bataan that you can add to your itinerary.

The Ruins of World War II in Corregidor near Bataan

One of the best sites to kick off your historical tour is the Dambana ng Kagitingan (Shrine of Valor) at the peak of Mt. Samat. You can then head to the Bataan World War II Museum, which is located at the back of the Balanga Elementary School. It features fragments of the war era, particularly the tragic Bataan Death March.

Corregidor Island is another famous World War II site. While it’s actually part of Cavite, the island’s close proximity to Bataan makes most people think it is part of the latter. Tourists can add Corregidor Island in their tours and see the ruins, tunnels, canons that once made up this powerful fortress.

Other notable World War II sites on the Bataan map include the Zero Kilometer (KM) Markers, the Filipino-Japanese Friendship Tower, the Fall of Bataan Marker, and the Layac Junction.

Like most provinces in the Philippines, Bataan has year-round, colorful festivals celebrating its riches, history, and faith. The Banga Festival in Balanga City is an annual festival celebrating the humble beginnings of the people of Balanga or Balangueños.

The word banga is the Tagalog term for a cooking pot. The week-long festival is celebrated during the last week of April.

The annual Bataan Day Celebration takes place yearly from April 6 to 9 and is considered a national holiday in the province of Bataan. It commemorates the heroism of the Filipino and American troops during World War II and Filipino soldiers during the Fall of Bataan.

If you love seafood, you should attend the week-long Alimango Sugpo Festival in Orani, Bataan held every first or second week of March. The event is a loving tribute to the town’s patron saint, Nuestra Señora del Rosario, for the abundant supply of seafood, particularly sugpo (prawns) and alimango (crabs).

Turtle lovers will definitely enjoy the yearly Pawikan Festival held during the last week of November. Apart from the street dances, parades, and local products showcase, the major highlight of this annual event is the release of turtle hatchlings into the sea.
