Why The Tourist Should Be Your Next Netflix Binge–And What to Know Before Watching

T ake a break from endlessly scrolling through Netflix searching for something new to watch and just press play on The Tourist, the BBC series which stars Jamie Dornan as a mysterious Irishman who wakes up in an Australian hospital with amnesia.

The wry thriller isn’t necessarily new—it premiered on the BBC in 2022 and quickly became one of the U.K.’s most-watched dramas of that year—but it is a recent addition to Netflix, which acquired the exclusive rights to the series last year and started streaming it in February. (Season 1 of The Tourist was previously available to stream in the U.S. on Max.)

At just six episodes, The Tourist is a low-risk, high-reward viewing experience full of twists and turns that are sure to keep you on your toes. Think Memento if directed by the Coen Brothers . Even better, if you like what you see, you can launch right into season 2, which is now streaming.

Here is what you need to know about your next great Netflix binge .

What is The Tourist about?

The Tourist begins with an Irish guy (played by Dornan) making a pit stop at a gas station in the middle of nowhere, Australia. Nothing seems too out of the ordinary; he fills up his car, questions the gas station attendant’s bathroom key policy, visits the absolutely filthy restroom, and is on his way. But things get weird once he gets back on the road. He finds himself being harassed by a tractor trailer that seems hellbent on mowing him down. Just when it appears that he’s in the clear, he’s T-boned by the truck and left for dead on the side of the dirt road.

When he wakes up, he’s in the hospital and has no memory of the accident or who he is. He doesn’t have a wallet or ID or phone on him to help jog his memory. This nameless man is now a tourist in his own life, struggling to understand who he was and why someone wanted him dead so badly. With help from a few kind, but not necessarily trustworthy strangers including Probationary Constable Helen Chambers (Danielle Macdonald), local waitress Luci (Shalom Brune-Franklin), and Detective Inspector Lachlan Rogers (Damon Herriman), he embarks on a journey of self-discovery that leaves him with more questions than answers about his dark past.

Why it’s worth your time

done playing tourist

Let’s start with Jamie Dornan. He played the leading man in the Fifty Shades trilogy and the Academy Award-nominated 2021 drama Belfast , but The Tourist feels like the first time he’s been able to truly show his range as an actor. It’s hard to resist that Irish brogue, but it’s even harder to resist his “ get you a man that can do both ” charm. Fans of the superbly silly Barb and Star Go to Vista Del Mar already know how funny he can be—not to mention, what a great singer he is. But The Tourist lets him show off his dry, dark wit, while also letting him show off his romantic side. By the end of the series, you’ll be left wondering why he hasn’t yet been cast in a good rom-com. (Sorry, not sorry Wild Mountain Thyme .) In the show’s most gripping action sequences, he manages to channel another amnesiac with killer instincts, Jason Bourne. But thanks to his hangdog expression, Dornan is also able to pull off the existential dread his character feels after realizing he’s not the person he hoped he would be.

Obviously, it’s hard to take your eyes off Dornan, but the scenery in The Tourist isn’t too bad to look at either. The show, set in the Australian outback—like way, way out back—was filmed on location in South Australia around Adelaide, a city known for its coastline. (Adelaide's North Haven Beach serves as the show’s stand-in for Bali’s Kuta Beach.) It was also shot in the Flinders Ranges , the largest mountain ranges in South Australia, and in Peterborough, a small town in an area near Adelaide known as wheat country, which stood in for the sandy outback scenes. (Season 2 takes place in Ireland, so prepare yourself for greenery as far as the eye can see.) Despite all the drama onscreen, The Tourist makes Australia look like a nice place to visit.

What to remember before watching The Tourist season 2

Whether you’ve already finished the first season and need a bit of a refresher or you’re planning to skip straight to Season 2, this is what you need to know before watching the second season.

Warning: major spoilers for The Tourist Season 1 ahead.

The Irish guy with amnesia is actually Elliot Stanley, and he’s done some really bad things in his life.

While in the hospital, Elliot finds a note in his pants pocket with an address for a diner in a tiny town called Burnt Ridge. It’s there he meets Luci (Brune-Franklin), a waitress who is actually his ex-girlfriend. She only chooses to tell him his name and their relationship to one another after they discover a man’s dead body stashed in an oil drum that had been buried. The man was Marko (Damien Strouthos), who, like Elliot, worked for Kostas (Alex Dimitriades), an international drug lord and Luci’s fiancé.

Luci isn’t exactly who she claims to be. She’s a scammer who stole a rather sentimental bag of money from Kostas in order to run off with Elliot. Now the Greek gangster is back to collect. But Kostas isn’t all that interested in the cash; a million dollars is chump change to a guy like him. This is about ego. Kostas, a maniac who spikes his water with LSD to be able to speak with his dead brother, wants to punish Elliot for successfully stealing his girl.

Kostas decides to kidnap the wife of Detective Inspector Lachlan Rogers (Herriman) in hopes that it will scare the decorated officer into doing his bidding. It does; Lachlan apprehends Elliot and kills a young sergeant in the process, becoming one of the bad guys. But is Elliot also a bad guy? Probationary Constable Helen Chambers (Macdonald), the ambitious cop-in-training assigned to his case, doesn’t think so. She believes the fact that he was willing to save her from being shot by Kostas’ henchman means there is good in there somewhere, even if he has done bad things. But Elliot isn’t convinced that someone can really change.

After drinking from Kostas’ LSD-laced water bottle, he has visions that offer some insight into who he may have been. He sees his first meeting with Kostas, where he’s hired as his accountant. He is able to relive his meet-cute with Luci and sees how toxic their relationship was. He discovers where he buried the bag of money and dreams of laying in bed with Helen. He also speaks to a Russian woman named Lena Pascal, who he’s seen before in his dreams. She tells him she’s in Adelaide and claims that she can help him “fill in the colors” of his past.

Elliot worries that what he has seen aren’t memories, but hallucinations. When he finds the bag of money in the same spot he had envisioned it though, he believes that Lena may be real, too. Unfortunately, he can’t go looking for her just yet. After Kostas and Luci are killed in a shootout over the million dollars, Lachlan lies to the police in hopes of saving himself. He claims that Elliot and Helen kidnapped him and went on a shooting rampage à la Bonnie and Clyde, killing the young sergeant. Luckily, Helen is able to access the CCTV footage that shows Lachlan transporting Elliot in handcuffs, catching him in his lie. It saves both her and Elliott from going to jail and allows Elliot a chance to speak with Lena, who was not a figment of his imagination—though after their chat he wishes she was.

When Lena comes to meet him at the jail, she reveals that he wasn’t just Kostas’ accountant as he had dreamt, but helped train the drug mules, mostly young immigrant women who swallowed bags of heroin to transport across the globe. Lena tells a story of two girls who died instantly after the bags Elliot gave them exploded in their stomachs. Lena lived, but not without literal scars. She shows him the long gash across her stomach where she was cut open to retrieve the drugs. She claims Elliot was the one who ordered her to be butchered, worried the heroin would go to waste. He apologizes for his cruelty, but she doesn’t absolve him of his guilt. “You have to live with yourself,” she tells him as she leaves.

Elliot doesn’t think he can and attempts to have himself arrested, but Lena won’t press charges. He then attempts to lose his memory again by getting into another car crash. He flips his car over, but unfortunately, it doesn’t work. He can’t forget what Lena told him and neither can Helen, who after learning the evil that Elliot was capable of decides she can no longer see him. But she can’t stop thinking about him and wondering whether he or anyone should be defined by their worst mistakes.

Elliot wonders the same, but the guilt is just too much. He decides that he can no longer live with himself and attempts to take his life with vodka and pills. Laid out on his bed, waiting to die, he gets a text: a burrito emoji from Helen.

The burrito references a scene earlier in the show, when Elliot and Helen were eating together in a Mexican restaurant. Helen is his hostage, but the night plays out like a first date. Elliot can’t remember what kind of food he likes so she suggests they order everything on the menu so he can figure out his taste now. She encourages him to stop thinking about who he was and start becoming the person he is meant to be. He later tells her that he equates burritos with happiness and her text becomes a lifeline. He might not be able to forget what he’s done, but she believes he has the capacity to change. The joy on his face when he sees her message makes it seem as if Elliot finally believes he can change too. But fans will have to wait until Season 2 to see if he’s able to become a better person.

Season 2 of The Tourist involves a mostly fresh cast compared to its freshman run.

The first season of the hit BBC series, which is now streaming on Netflix , saw Jamie Dornan’s unnamed man wake up in the Australian outback with no memory of who he was. After plenty of twists and turns, with some fatal consequences, audiences now know that his real name is Elliot Stanley, and he was not the best of dudes.

Now, 2024's Season 2 sees the story go to Ireland, where audiences will hopefully learn even more memories its leading character has forgotten.

Unlike the rest of his family, Mark McKenna’s Fergal McDonnell is not as interested in continuing the bloodshed and revenge as part of this never-ending feud. As the youngest member of the McDonnells, Fergal struggles to find his place in the world.

McKenna previously played parts in Overlord , One of Us Is Lying , and Wayne .

Francis Magee - Frank McDonnell

Stream It Or Skip It: ‘The Tourist’ On Netflix, Where Jamie Dornan Plays A Man Without His Memory Trying To Outrun His Past

Where to stream:.

  • The Tourist

Netflix Basic

What would you do if you lost your memory? Not just what you had for breakfast, but all sense of who you are and who is in your life? Then you find out that someone really, really wants to see you dead? That’s the idea behind the new Netflix series, which originally ran on HBO Max back in 2022.

THE TOURIST : STREAM IT OR SKIP IT?

Opening Shot: Scenes of the arid environment in the Australian Outback. A tiny car drives down an empty road.

The Gist: A man (Jamie Dornan) stops for gas; he’s wearing a generic “AUSTRALIA” tourist t-shirt. He has no idea why the attendant at the station makes him sign out for the bathroom key. We see him come out the back door of the bathroom, next to the Dumpsters.

As he’s driving on the seemingly empty road in his tiny Mazda, a massive tractor trailer bears down on him. When the tractor trailer rams the man’s car, he realizes it’s not just an aggressive driver. After a long chase over some rough terrain, the man thinks he’s gotten away from the truck, when the truck slams into him, causing the tiny car to roll over a few times.

The man wakes up in the local hospital, surprisingly not severely injured. However, he has no idea who he is or what he was doing. He doesn’t even remember his own name. He can recall a song title when he’s in an MRI machine, but that’s about it.

A friendly local cop, Helen Chambers (Danielle Macdonald), goes to his room to take a statement. She is a bit uncomfortable with the man’s lack of memory, but ends up being reassuring to an extent. The only thing he finds in his possessions is a note to meet someone the next day at a diner in a nearby town. Helen says she’ll look into that.

We follow Helen home and see that, like most of us, she has issues with her weight, not the least of which is exacerbated by her fiancé Ethan (Greg Larsen) and their upcoming wedding.

Another thing we see is someone buried underground. Desperate to get out of whatever box he’s been put in, he tries to call someone on his phone, but no one is answering.

The man goes outside to get air, but gets lost inside the hospital, scaring him senseless. He decides to check himself out of the hospital the next day, against medical advice, because he needs to go to that diner and find out just who wanted to meet him there. Helen understands why he wants to do it, and gives him a bus ticket to get there.

At the diner, he meets a waitress named Luci (Shalom Brune-Franklin), who seems to be fascinated by his amnesia. When she spills lemonade on him, she takes him out to where there are bathrooms. Just then, there’s an explosion, right in the booth where he was sitting. He wonders aloud why in the world someone is trying to kill him.

Pictures from a disposable camera found at the crash site help him retrace his steps, as well as video from the gift shop he visited. It brings him back to the gas station and its bathroom. He doesn’t find out his name though, as he signed the key sign-out sheet as “Crocodile Dundee.” But he finds something else; a stuffed koala that he hid next to the Dumpster. Much to his surprise, it starts ringing.

What Shows Will It Remind You Of? Take the movie  Memento and cross it with the quirkiness of the first season of the  Fargo series, and you’ve got the vibe of  The Tourist.

Our Take: The Tourist , written by Harry Williams and Jack Williams ( The Missing, Fleabag ) looks like it’s a complex show with a twisty plot, but when you really take a close look, it’s pretty straightforward. Dornan’s character has no idea who he is; all he knows is that someone wants to kill him. With the help of Helen and others, he’ll try to piece things together before those that are after him, including Billy (Ólafur Darri Ólafsson), the whistling man who almost squashed him in the tractor trailer, catch up to him.

In the first episode,  The Tourist  evolves from what seems like a thriller to a more personal narrative. It’s why we get involved in Helen’s life when she’s off-duty. In a Weight Watchers-style meeting, she claims she doesn’t like her body, even though everyone is yelling about body acceptance. But it also feels like she’s more there because of her fiancé than anything else. So even though Helen knows her name, who’s in her life and what she does, she also hasn’t found herself. Plus, she seems to be made to feel guilty about just about everything.

Perhaps as she gets more involved in the life of Dornan’s character, the more she will figure out who she is. At least that’s what we hope, because Macdonald is utterly charming as Helen, who is very much in the vein of Allison Tolman’s portrayal of Molly Solverson in the aforementioned  Fargo. She’s good at her job, even if she’s a bit green, but also is a friendly and helpful sort who needs to help herself most of all.

There is definitely a bit of a sense of humor running the first episode, but the Williamses aren’t trying to make the show quippy. The humor is there when people seem to be fascinated with Dornan’s character’s amnesia, though he assures them it’s no picnic. The humor creeps in along the edges of the show, but it does just enough to ease what is a pretty serious and grim performance by Dornan.

There is one twist near the end of the episode that we won’t spoil here, but it does make us wonder if, as things get more complicated for Dornan’s character (notice we haven’t named him yet, because the character has none as yet), the plot will become more convoluted. We hope not, as it seems the straightforward manner in which this story is being told suits  The Tourist just fine.

Sex and Skin: Nothing in the first episode.

Parting Shot: When the stuffed koala starts ringing, the man digs out a burner phone and answers it. When the man who’s buried starts yelling in relief that he answered, the man says, “Uh, who’s this?”

Sleeper Star: Shalom Brune-Franklin does some compelling work as Luci, and we know that she’s much more involved in this story than most of the first episode lets on.

Most Pilot-y Line: Nothing we could find.

Our Call:  STREAM IT.  The Tourist  hooked us in with its story, plus the performances by Dornan, Macdonald and Brune-Franklin. Let’s hope the story continues to be interesting as the season goes on.

5 best shows like 'The Tourist' to watch after season 2

  • Oops! Something went wrong. Please try again later. More content below

Imagine waking up in a hospital room, in Australia, without any identity about who you are and why you are there. That's the premise behind the trending series on Netflix, "The Tourist."

Where to stream 'The Tourist'

"The Tourist" seasons 1-2 are streaming on Netflix .

Jamie Dorman stars as the main character, who has no memory of who he is and how he landed in the hospital. A variety of strange, helpful and quirky characters help him along the way. The fantastic blend of mystery, action, and a sprinkling of dark humor has made the show a top choice on Netflix.

Season 1 just became available in the U.S. on the streaming network earlier this year and season 2 just dropped on Feb. 29. When you're done binge-watching, here are some shows like "The Tourist" that offer up the same or similar vibes to fill the void.

Listed as one of the top-rated TV shows by IMDb, this show has endured for five seasons and has received numerous awards and nominations, including six Primetime Emmy wins. The anthology series changes the time period and location for each season, although there is some slight overlap of characters. Each installment focuses on a crime that somehow manages to connect to the city in North Dakota, which the show is named after.

Fans of the movie will recognize it's a spinoff of the famous film. In addition, if you are familiar with Coen brothers movies , you are sure to spot references to their catalog of work through the show.  This is the perfect follow-up to "The Tourist," considering the mystery woven throughout every season and the dark humor throughout. However, there is plenty of violence in the show, so make sure you are prepared for that.

Watch on Hulu

'The Missing'

This show is a no-brainer follow-up to "The Tourist" since it was also written and produced by brothers Harry and Jack Williams. However, "The Missing" has less of a humorous touch than its Australia-set counterpart. Season 1 of the show focuses on a little boy who goes missing and his father's motivation to find him. Season 2 shifts to the mystery of a teen who wanders off campus and gets kidnapped, only to come back with a story of another missing girl.

Much like you see with "Fargo," each season is an anthology where there is very little overlap, and you can easily watch them independently of each other. The main connection is the French investigator, Tchéky Karyo as Julien Baptiste, who investigates both cases.

Watch on Starz

'Three Pines'

If the mystery behind "The Tourist" is what drew you in, you'll love "Three Pines." Based on the novel by Louise Penny, the single-season show centers on Alfred Molina's Chief Inspector Armand Gamache, who is solving perplexing murders in the small Quebec village of Three Pines. The residents aren't exactly happy to see him, but despite that cold reception, he is drawn into the villagers' lives and spots numerous possible suspects, giving the show an intriguing Agatha Christie vibe.

Sadly, despite its positive reviews, it was canceled after the first season because there was disagreement between the production companies. However, it still stands on its own as a miniseries. You'll be pleased to know there is an ongoing request for signatures to renew the show on Change.org if you find yourself enthralled by season one.

Watch on Prime Video

'Mr. Inbetween'

For those enticed by "The Tourist's" Australian setting, you don't want to miss Mr. Inbetween. Scott Ryan's Ray Shoesmith is a charming but violent hitman in Sydney. The mockumentary "The Magician," released in 2005, was about the same character. The show tells Ray's story more seriously and the title points to the ongoing struggle that he faces while balancing his criminal activities with his obligations to friends and family. No surprise, his work takes a toll on his relationships.

There is plenty of crime, romance, and comedy to be found within this series created by our Aussie friends. The series lasted for three seasons, coming to an end simply because Ryan was done playing the character. Considering he played the role in an independent film and a major series, it's no surprise he was done.

'Underbelly'

Another Australian show to add to your streamlining list is "Underbelly." As the title implies, it takes place in the underbelly of the Australian world, focusing on both sides of the law. What really will pull you into this show is each series is based on true-life events.

The first three seasons are based on the book "Leadbelly: Inside Australia's Underworld," while the fourth season is based on the book "Razor" by Larry Writer and the fifth season is on real-life convicted murderer Anthony "Rooster" Perish. The sixth season, set between 1915 and 1927, is about Melbourne gangster Squizzy Taylor. Then, the final season tells the story of gangster Mark Read, otherwise known as Chopper. For crime fans who love a show based on true stories, this one is certain to draw you in and not let you go.

Jamie Dornan as Elliot Stanley in 'The Tourist'

Jamie Dornan as Elliot Stanley in 'The Tourist'

 Ian Routledge/Two Brothers Pictures

The BBC had a run of hit programming during the 2021-2022 TV season, with Vigil ,  The Tourist , Time , and The Responder all received as critical darlings with high viewer ratings. All four were renewed in a batch drop announcement in May 2022, despite both Time and The Tourist  being designed to be one-and-done limited series. In the case of Time , the BBC announced it would expand the show’s brief into an anthology series to continue the program. The Tourist’s  Season 2 plot was not confirmed, though with the same writing team; it seemed likely to continue the story of Elliot Stanley ( Jamie Dornan ), who woke up after a car crash in the Outback with no memory of who he was.

It took almost a year, but in March 2023, the BBC finally confirmed that Dornan was signed on to do another season, continuing his role as the Northern Irishman desperately seeking himself before someone else finds him first. Dornan will again be joined by  Danielle Macdonald ( Dumplin’ ) as PC Helen Chambers, who helped keep Elliott alive, though not always of her own volition. The series creators, Jack and Harry Williams, have completed six new scripts, which have been approved with production moving forward, and plan to start principal photography in April 2023.

In a statement from the BBC about the approaching start of filming, the Williams brothers said, “The Tourist was unlike anything we’d written before, and we’re hugely grateful for the incredible response to series one.” The statement continues: “It’s been an exciting journey getting stuck into that world again with the quirky characters that were so loved, and seeing where we could take them next whilst continuing to deliver a tonally unique and off-beat drama.”

Season 2's synopsis promises the series will pick up directly after the events of Season 1.

Deciding that it’s finally time for Elliot to rediscover his roots following the car crash that left him with severe memory loss, the pair find themselves dragged into the dangerous whirlwind of his past life. Whilst Elliot fights with his own demons, Helen is left to pick up the pieces of a larger mystery; forcing them both to confront foes, old and new.

Dornan and Macdonald are the only cast confirmed to return at this time. Season 1's other leading lady,  Shalom Brune Franklin ( Great Expectations ), did not make it out of the first series alive, nor did most of the rest of the cast. Of those who did, the most likely to be back is Damon Herriman as Detective Inspector Lachlan Rogers. However, with filming set to begin in a few weeks, more names are expected to follow soon.

Also of note, Season 1 of The Tourist was one of the many British series scooped up by HBO Max and then deeply under-marketed in the U.S., despite Dornan's career hitting a significant peak with Belfast right around the time of release. Since then, its parent company, Warner Media, has been acquired by Discovery Networks, which seems more interested in farming out content than loading HBO Max up with it, and the recent press announcement for  The Tourist Season 2 heavily hints All3media International, which is handling international sales, is planning to shop the series elsewhere.

The Tourist Season 2 does not yet have a release date on either side of the pond.

As Helen continues to look for Elliot Stanley we get a little more back story on the O'Donnell's war against the Cassidys, with Jamie Dornan's character receiving some big clues about his family...

Frank MacDonnell is on his way to the funeral of a young man, however it’s soon clear he’s not welcome. “He’d be alive if it weren’t for you! Your filth he stuck in his arm!” says one woman when he arrives. As he leaves he receives a call from someone telling him that Rian has been killed.

Helen witnessed the crime and calls Detective Slater to tell him all about it. He leaves "Mary" behind and sets off to the crime scene, but not before a neighbour accosts him complaining about the smell coming from his house. What smell could that be? Does he need to get his pipes looked at or is he hiding a dead body in his house? We’re not sure if we trust Detective Slater.

Meanwhile on the plane from Australia, Ethan gets to know Lena a little better and she reveals that she sent a message many months ago that went unanswered until recently. “There’s a man in Ireland and I’m going to surprise him..” she says. “By making him pay for everything he’s done.” Talk about a conversation killer.

Who does that skeleton belong to?

On the island, as Elliot desperately tries to get some reception, Donal heads back to the mainland to get his face looked at, leaving Orla and Fergal to track the escapee down on their quad bikes.

Elliot finally manages to get through to Helen, but telling her he’s “on an island off Ireland” proves quite tricky with such terrible reception. She also doesn’t hear his advice to be careful, which is a real shame — because she does need to be careful.

Later on Elliot bumps into Fergal at an old house, which has a skeleton in the cupboard. In their struggle, Fergal falls down into the basement and twists his ankle. Ouch! But who does that skeleton belong to?

Fergal then fills Elliot in on the history of the house, explaining how it was the scene of a big shoot out between the O’Donnells and the Cassidys several decades ago. Frank’s uncle decided the dead should “rest where they lay”, this might explain where that skeleton came from, but could it belong to someone who died more recently?

The Tourist season 2 episode 2 recap

What did Niamh Cassidy take from Frank?

Frank heads to Rian’s place, where he finds Niamh has written ‘Cogadh’ — which means ‘war’ — on the wall of his house. He scrubs it clean before Detective Slater and Helen show up asking questions (or not asking questions, in Slater's case).

Later on he heads to the "Kilgal Museum" where he finds Donal in a lot of pain due to his run-in with Elliot. Frank tells Donal his cousin Rian is dead, before castigating him for starting a war with the Cassidys. We thought Frank might have been the mastermind behind this whole abduction, but apparently not.

Could Donal have been contacted by Lena, with the pair bonding over a shared desire for revenge on Elliot, before hatching a dark plan together? We shall see. If that’s the case then Donal isn’t letting on just yet. “We did it for your birthday!” he says, explaining how he planned to use Elliot to make Niamh give back what she took from Frank. But what did she take?

The Tourist season 2 episode 2 recap

What does the DNA evidence in the report say?

After trying and failing to question Frank at the murder scene, DS Slater takes Helen back to the station and fills her in on the battle between warring criminal families, the O’Donnells and the Cassidys.

Helen says someone in the Garda is taking bribes, which could well be the case, as DS Slater explains that any investigation involving the two families is soon shut down. However later on he discovers an engagement ring in Elliot’s bag. Was Elliot going to propose to Helen?

Helen finally plucks up the courage to go and talk to Niamh, who tells her a war has restarted between the O’Donnells and the Cassidys. But it’s not until she gets back to the Garda station and goes through the files on Elliot’s kidnapping that she starts getting somewhere. It’s clear there’s some crucial DNA evidence from the report that DS Slater hadn’t been telling her, but what is it?

All those questions quickly go out of Helen’s mind when she enters his house and finds a dead body in the basement…

Why is Fergal helping Elliot?

Fergal then tells Elliot that he’s a Cassidy. So should he be Elliot Cassidy? Whoever he is, Elliot is desperate to know what he did to enrage the O’Donnells so terribly, but Fergal won’t say. He does tell Elliot about Frank - and his mother, Niamh Cassidy, though.

The pair then hatch a plan to get Elliot back to the mainland, which involves the fugitive hiding on the O’Donnell’s boat while Orla takes her little brother to get treatment for his ankle. But why is Fergal helping Elliot? Is he fed up with his family’s war or does he have other reasons? “If you tell anyone about this we’re both dead,” says Fergal.

Elliot then sets off to find Frank at the distillery museum, where he finds a section all about ‘The Disappearance of Elliot Stanley’, leading us to believe his name isn’t Elliot Stanley at all. We already know that everyone thinks he’s a Cassidy, but what does the DNA in the Garda file say?

How to be a Tourist in Your Own Town

How to be a Tourist in Your Own Town

Have you ever wondered what it’s like to be a tourist in your own town? For anyone consumed by wanderlust, it’s always appealing to explore and go on an adventure.

But we are frequently so wrapped up in the daily grind that we overlook the great pleasures that our own backyard can provide.

It was on a seemingly ordinary weekend that my friend and I decided to embark on an adventure right in our hometown, and it completely transformed our perspective.

Embracing Local Attractions

To become a local tourist is to embrace the attractions that your town has to offer. Think about the places that visitors often flock to and consider why they are so popular. There might be something special about these spots that you may have overlooked.

For example, Washington D.C. has plenty of family-friendly sites like the Space Museum and the Washington Monument. We took the time to check out these places and tried to see them through the eyes of a tourist.

To fully immerse ourselves in the tourist experience, we stayed in a family sized suite in Washington DC . We got to relax and enjoy the amenities of a hotel and also see our hometown from a different perspective.

Explore the Local Cuisine

eating food in new york city

Exploring the local cuisine is indeed a tourist activity. Every destination has its own unique flavors and dishes, and your hometown is no exception.

Try visiting a restaurant that you’ve never been to before or sample a dish that is popular among visitors. Take a moment to speak with the local chef or the owner. You’d be surprised to know that the presentation of the food and the knowledge behind it are the result of a series of cultural processes, per Tourism Sustainability and Gastronomic Heritage .

Our journey took us to a charming little family restaurant nestled between historic brownstones, a place we had driven past countless times but never truly noticed. We tried out a local delicacy and learned of its fascinating origin.

Another memorable experience was at a food festival in our town. It was a vibrant celebration of different cultures, a gastronomic journey that spanned continents.

We tried dishes I couldn’t pronounce, prepared by chefs who had brought their culinary expertise from far-flung places. It was a delightful reminder that our town was a melting pot of flavors and cultures. It also made us see that there was no need to travel far to savor delicious cuisines.

Take a Guided Tour

Even if you think you know your town like the back of your hand, there’s always something new to learn. So, we decided to take a guided tour in my hometown.

It was a historic walking tour that promised to unveil hidden stories and secrets of the streets we had walked countless times. I thought, “What secrets could we possibly find out?” but as outlined in this study , guided tours are transformative.

As our group gathered at the starting point, our guide began to share intriguing tales of the past, of heroes and villains who had once graced these very streets.

We found ourselves engrossed in the narratives, seemingly traveling back in time. It was incredible to realize that our town had such a rich and colorful history, just waiting to be uncovered.

Guided tours often focus on specific themes or areas of interest. If history isn’t your cup of tea, don’t worry as there are numerous other options.

You can delve into a culinary adventure with a food tasting tour or explore the artistic side of your town with an art and culture tour. The variety of tours available is astounding, and each offers a unique perspective on your hometown.

An experience like this will not only provide you with interesting facts about the area. It will give you a chance to meet other tourists and locals who share your love for exploration.

During our historic walking tour, we struck up conversations with fellow participants. We exchanged stories, tips, and recommendations, making new friends in the process.

It was a wonderful reminder that there are countless like-minded individuals who appreciate the beauty and history of our town.

Share Your Experience

Don’t forget to share your experience as a tourist in your own town. Write a blog post. Post anecdotes with photos and videos on social media. Tell people you know about your adventures.

Sharing your perspective can help to attract more visitors or inspire others to explore their own backyards.

As a local tourist, you can gain a new appreciation for your hometown and contribute to its growth and development as a tourist destination. Go out there and start exploring because you never know what hidden gems you might discover right in your own backyard.

Attracting Tourists to Your Town

Fort Santiago Intramuros Manila

So, you might be wondering, how can you turn your town into a destination that attracts tourists? Well, here’s where the magic begins. Think of your town as a treasure trove, waiting to be discovered. Showcase its uniqueness and charm.

In my town, local businesses played a significant role in creating a welcoming atmosphere for tourists. They added flair to their storefronts, decorated with vibrant displays, and even organized small events. It was like a local carnival every weekend, and tourists couldn’t resist the charm.

By supporting local businesses and participating in community events, we became not just tourists in our town but ambassadors, encouraging others to explore its treasures.

Defining your tourist identity.

Being a tourist in your own town doesn’t mean you have to carry a camera around your neck and a map in your hand. It’s more about embracing a mindset of curiosity. When we were tourists in our town, we ditched the usual routines and allowed ourselves to get lost in the charm of our surroundings.

Here are some takeaways from this experience:

  • Do your research. Before exploring, take time to learn more about your town’s history, culture, and attractions. Visit your local library, museum, or tourism office. You can also check out your town’s website and social media pages.
  • Make a list . Once you know more about what your town has to offer, make a list of the places you want to visit and the things you want to do. With proper organization, you can maximize your time.
  • Talk to locals. Learn more about your town by talking to the people who live in the area. Ask them for their recommendations on places to visit, things to do, and restaurants to eat at. You can talk to locals at coffee shops, bookstores, and other businesses. Strike up conversations with people you meet on the street or at the park.
  • Try new things. It’s a privilege to try new things without having to go too far out of your way. For example, if you’ve never been to a museum before, here’s your chance. If you’ve never been to a certain part of town, explore it. And if you’ve never tried a certain type of food, give it a go.
  • Most importantly, have fun! Being a tourist in your own town is a great way to learn more about your community and appreciate the things that make it unique. The beauty of embracing this tourist identity is that it allows you to see the familiar with a sense of wonder. You’ll be surprised how much you’ve overlooked.

One memory that stands out is when we stumbled upon a lively street fair we hadn’t known about. It was like finding a hidden treasure chest filled with local crafts, delicious food, and live music.

Remember, sometimes the best experiences are the spontaneous ones, the moments of serendipity that can turn an ordinary day into an extraordinary one.

Final Thoughts

Cadaques Spain

After my little staycation experiment, I can definitively say that playing tourist in your own town is worth it. Taking the time to explore familiar places with fresh eyes made me appreciate the hidden gems right in my own backyard. It also brought back that exciting vacation feeling without the hassle and expense of actually going somewhere new.

While it’s easy to take your hometown for granted, giving yourself permission to be a tourist for a few days helps you see it in a whole new light .

Make a point to check out those restaurants or museums you’ve been meaning to try. Wander through neighborhoods you usually only drive through and admire the architecture. Take side streets and paths to find scenic views and photo ops you may have missed before.

Trust me, you’ll be amazed by how much there is to discover without leaving the comforts of home.

So if you’re feeling uninspired and stuck in a rut, become a tourist in your own town . You may just fall in love with where you live all over again.

I know I did!

Now, if you’ll excuse me, I have a walking tour to finish and a local food festival to check out this weekend. Don’t wait – book your own little hometown getaway and see your city with fresh, appreciative eyes. You won’t regret it.

9 reasons to play tourist, playing tourist isn't tacky, it's tactful..

9 Reasons To Play Tourist

I've been a lot of places and done a lot of things during the short amount of time I have been given on this planet. From my chilly Alaskan nights, to my sunny mornings spent in Germany, and my countless in betweens, I have lived a wonderful and exciting life. The advice I have to share from my wanderlust heart: playing tourist is the way to go.

1. You get to wear a fanny pack

That's right, the 90s called, and yes, they want their fanny pack back. But they're not going to get it back because you're rockin' it! They're hands free, convenient, and totally hiptastic! Okay, that might be a little overkill, but they are pretty great. Best of all, your fanny will tell all of the locals that you are a tourist without ever having to open your mouth!

2. You live in athletic wear

Living life as a tourist means realizing that you will never see the same people again in your lifetime. With that being said, you won't have to worry about the line, "dress to impress." Instead baggy T's and athletic shorts become your go to outfit. In this wear, you will be ready and comfortable for any situation thrown your direction!

3. You get away with breaking the rules

I'm sorry, I didn't know this was a private look out. I didn't know I couldn't be here after dark. I didn't realize this isn't the way in. I'm not from here. I'm a tourist. As a tourist, you never get into trouble for your "ignorance." Also something I know as intentional rebellion.

4. Your answer is always yes

Would I like to go to see the locals beach? Yes! Do I want to try eating seaweed? Of course! Want to try surfing? Surf's up, man! As a tourist, you never say no. A new opportunity means a new adventure. There is nothing too tacky, and nothing too edgy. The experiences are endless!

5. You get free stuff

Along with never being able to say no, you will find yourself in a lot of different situations. Yes, I would love to enter your drawing! Yes, I would love the opportunity to win something from your store! If you're as lucky as me, you might just be holding the winning ticket!

6. The game is always on

Because you will likely never see these people again, you can have the courage to hit on anyone. Like really, anyone . That tan, fit lifeguard was totally staring at you when you were tumbling through that wave. Give him your number. That handsome, well-dressed cashier totally brushed your hand when he gave you your receipt. Ask him what he is doing later. Got mixed signals? That's okay. You're a tourist.

7. Endless selfies

There is no shame in the amount of selfies you take. You just want to show off to all of your friends back home. With that being said, even the bathroom of that really cool restaurant you are at right now is a totally acceptable selfie spot.

8. You have more fun

You will have way more fun than anyone around you. Nothing is off limits. There are no cares. There are no time tables. The only thing that determines what you do next is whether or not what you are doing will bring you joy.

9. I've done that before becomes your catch phrase

If you have played the tourist game right, then you have done absolutely anything and everything you could get your hands on. Taken an air boat ride on an alligator hunt? Oh yeah. Hiked up a mountain to the mouth of a glacier? Been there. Thrift shopped in downtown Chicago? I've done that. Being a true tourist means you will have enough stories to last a lifetime. Or at least enough to last until your next vacation.

19 Lessons I'll Never Forget from Growing Up In a Small Town

There have been many lessons learned..

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

1. The importance of traditions.

Sometimes traditions seem like a silly thing, but the fact of it is that it's part of who you are. You grew up this way and, more than likely, so did your parents. It is something that is part of your family history and that is more important than anything.

2. How to be thankful for family and friends.

No matter how many times they get on your nerves or make you mad, they are the ones who will always be there and you should never take that for granted.

3. How to give back.

When tragedy strikes in a small town, everyone feels obligated to help out because, whether directly or indirectly, it affects you too. It is easy in a bigger city to be able to disconnect from certain problems. But in a small town those problems affect everyone.

4. What the word "community" really means.

Along the same lines as #3, everyone is always ready and willing to lend a helping hand when you need one in a small town and to me that is the true meaning of community. It's working together to build a better atmosphere, being there to raise each other up, build each other up, and pick each other up when someone is in need. A small town community is full of endless support whether it be after a tragedy or at a hometown sports game. Everyone shows up to show their support.

5. That it isn't about the destination, but the journey.

People say this to others all the time, but it takes on a whole new meaning in a small town. It is true that life is about the journey, but when you're from a small town, you know it's about the journey because the journey probably takes longer than you spend at the destination. Everything is so far away that it is totally normal to spend a couple hours in the car on your way to some form of entertainment. And most of the time, you're gonna have as many, if not more, memories and laughs on the journey than at the destination.

6. The consequences of making bad choices.

Word travels fast in a small town, so don't think you're gonna get away with anything. In fact, your parents probably know what you did before you even have a chance to get home and tell them. And forget about being scared of what your teacher, principle, or other authority figure is going to do, you're more afraid of what your parents are gonna do when you get home.

7. To trust people, until you have a reason not to.

Everyone deserves a chance. Most people don't have ill-intentions and you can't live your life guarding against every one else just because a few people in your life have betrayed your trust.

8. To be welcoming and accepting of everyone.

While small towns are not always extremely diverse, they do contain people with a lot of different stories, struggle, and backgrounds. In a small town, it is pretty hard to exclude anyone because of who they are or what they come from because there aren't many people to choose from. A small town teaches you that just because someone isn't the same as you, doesn't mean you can't be great friends.

9. How to be my own, individual person.

In a small town, you learn that it's okay to be who you are and do your own thing. You learn that confidence isn't how beautiful you are or how much money you have, it's who you are on the inside.

10. How to work for what I want.

Nothing comes easy in life. They always say "gardens don't grow overnight" and if you're from a small town you know this both figuratively and literally. You certainly know gardens don't grow overnight because you've worked in a garden or two. But you also know that to get to the place you want to be in life it takes work and effort. It doesn't just happen because you want it to.

11. How to be great at giving directions.

If you're from a small town, you know that you will probably only meet a handful of people in your life who ACTUALLY know where your town is. And forget about the people who accidentally enter into your town because of google maps. You've gotten really good at giving them directions right back to the interstate.

12. How to be humble.

My small town has definitely taught me how to be humble. It isn't always about you, and anyone who grows up in a small town knows that. Everyone gets their moment in the spotlight, and since there's so few of us, we're probably best friends with everyone so we are as excited when they get their moment of fame as we are when we get ours.

13. To be well-rounded.

Going to a small town high school definitely made me well-rounded. There isn't enough kids in the school to fill up all the clubs and sports teams individually so be ready to be a part of them all.

14. How to be great at conflict resolution.

In a small town, good luck holding a grudge. In a bigger city you can just avoid a person you don't like or who you've had problems with. But not in a small town. You better resolve the issue fast because you're bound to see them at least 5 times a week.

15. The beauty of getting outside and exploring.

One of my favorite things about growing up in a rural area was being able to go outside and go exploring and not have to worry about being in danger. There is nothing more exciting then finding a new place somewhere in town or in the woods and just spending time there enjoying the natural beauty around you.

16. To be prepared for anything.

You never know what may happen. If you get a flat tire, you better know how to change it yourself because you never know if you will be able to get ahold of someone else to come fix it. Mechanics might be too busy , or more than likely you won't even have enough cell service to call one.

17. That you don't always have to do it alone.

It's okay to ask for help. One thing I realized when I moved away from my town for college, was how much my town has taught me that I could ask for help is I needed it. I got into a couple situations outside of my town where I couldn't find anyone to help me and found myself thinking, if I was in my town there would be tons of people ready to help me. And even though I couldn't find anyone to help, you better believe I wasn't afraid to ask.

18. How to be creative.

When you're at least an hour away from normal forms of entertainment such as movie theaters and malls, you learn to get real creative in entertaining yourself. Whether it be a night looking at the stars in the bed of a pickup truck or having a movie marathon in a blanket fort at home, you know how to make your own good time.

19. To brush off gossip.

It's all about knowing the person you are and not letting others influence your opinion of yourself. In small towns, there is plenty of gossip. But as long as you know who you really are, it will always blow over.

Grateful Beyond Words: A Letter to My Inspiration

I have never been so thankful to know you..

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

You have taught me that you don't always have to strong. You are allowed to break down as long as you pick yourself back up and keep moving forward. When life had you at your worst moments, you allowed your friends to be there for you and to help you. You let them in and they helped pick you up. Even in your darkest hour you showed so much strength. I know that you don't believe in yourself as much as you should but you are unbelievably strong and capable of anything you set your mind to.

Your passion to make a difference in the world is unbelievable. You put your heart and soul into your endeavors and surpass any personal goal you could have set. Watching you do what you love and watching you make a difference in the lives of others is an incredible experience. The way your face lights up when you finally realize what you have accomplished is breathtaking and I hope that one day I can have just as much passion you have.

The love you have for your family is outstanding. Watching you interact with loved ones just makes me smile . You are so comfortable and you are yourself. I see the way you smile when you are around family and I wish I could see you smile like this everyday. You love with all your heart and this quality is something I wished I possessed.

You inspire me to be the best version of myself. I look up to you. I feel that more people should strive to have the strength and passion that you exemplify in everyday life. You may be stubborn at points but when you really need help you let others in, which shows strength in itself. I have never been more proud to know someone and to call someone my role model. You have taught me so many things and I want to thank you. Thank you for inspiring me in life. Thank you for making me want to be a better person.

Waitlisted for a College Class? Here's What to Do!

Dealing with the inevitable realities of college life..

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Don't freak out

This is a rule you should continue to follow no matter what you do in life, but is especially helpful in this situation.

Email the professor

Around this time, professors are getting flooded with requests from students wanting to get into full classes. This doesn't mean you shouldn't burden them with your email; it means they are expecting interested students to email them. Send a short, concise message telling them that you are interested in the class and ask if there would be any chance for you to get in.

Attend the first class

Often, the advice professors will give you when they reply to your email is to attend the first class. The first class isn't the most important class in terms of what will be taught. However, attending the first class means you are serious about taking the course and aren't going to give up on it.

Keep attending class

Every student is in the same position as you are. They registered for more classes than they want to take and are "shopping." For the first couple of weeks, you can drop or add classes as you please, which means that classes that were once full will have spaces. If you keep attending class and keep up with assignments, odds are that you will have priority. Professors give preference to people who need the class for a major and then from higher to lower class year (senior to freshman).

Have a backup plan

For two weeks, or until I find out whether I get into my waitlisted class, I will be attending more than the usual number of classes. This is so that if I don't get into my waitlisted class, I won't have a credit shortage and I won't have to fall back in my backup class. Chances are that enough people will drop the class, especially if it is very difficult like computer science, and you will have a chance. In popular classes like art and psychology, odds are you probably won't get in, so prepare for that.

Remember that everything works out at the end

Life is full of surprises. So what if you didn't get into the class you wanted? Your life obviously has something else in store for you. It's your job to make sure you make the best out of what you have.

Navigating the Talking Stage: 21 Essential Questions to Ask for Connection

It's mandatory to have these conversations..

Whether you met your new love interest online , through mutual friends, or another way entirely, you'll definitely want to know what you're getting into. I mean, really, what's the point in entering a relationship with someone if you don't know whether or not you're compatible on a very basic level?

Consider these 21 questions to ask in the talking stage when getting to know that new guy or girl you just started talking to:

1. What do you do for a living?

What someone does for a living can tell a lot about who they are and what they're interested in! Their career reveals a lot more about them than just where they spend their time to make some money.

2. What's your favorite color?

OK, I get it, this seems like something you would ask a Kindergarten class, but I feel like it's always good to know someone's favorite color . You could always send them that Snapchat featuring you in that cute shirt you have that just so happens to be in their favorite color!

3. Do you have any siblings?

This one is actually super important because it's totally true that people grow up with different roles and responsibilities based on where they fall in the order. You can tell a lot about someone just based on this seemingly simple question.

4. What's your favorite television show?

OK, maybe this isn't a super important question, but you have to know ASAP if you can quote Michael Scott or not. If not, he probably isn't the one. Sorry, girl.

5. When is your birthday?

You can then proceed to do the thing that every girl does without admitting it and see how compatible your zodiacs are.

6. What's your biggest goal in life?

If you're like me, you have big goals that you want to reach someday, and you want a man behind you who also has big goals and understands what it's like to chase after a dream. If his biggest goal is to see how quickly he can binge-watch " Grey's Anatomy " on Netflix , you may want to move on.

7. If you had three wishes granted to you by a genie, what would they be?

This is a go-to for an insight into their personality. Based on how they answer, you can tell if they're goofy, serious, or somewhere in between.

8. What's your favorite childhood memory?

For some, this may be a hard question if it involves a family member or friend who has since passed away . For others, it may revolve around a tradition that no longer happens. The answers to this question are almost endless!

9. If you could change one thing about your life, what would it be?

We all have parts of our lives and stories that we wish we could change. It's human nature to make mistakes. This question is a little bit more personal but can really build up the trust level.

10. Are you a cat or a dog person?

I mean, duh! If you're a dog person, and he is a cat person, it's not going to work out.

11. Do you believe in a religion or any sort of spiritual power?

Personally, I am a Christian, and as a result, I want to be with someone who shares those same values. I know some people will argue that this question is too much in the talking stage , but why go beyond the talking stage if your personal values will never line up?

12. If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would it be?

Even homebodies have a must visit place on their bucket list !

13. What is your ideal date night?

Hey, if you're going to go for it... go for it!

14. Who was/is your celebrity crush?

For me, it was hands-down Nick Jonas . This is always a fun question to ask!

15. What's a good way to cheer you up if you're having a bad day?

Let's be real, if you put a label on it, you're not going to see your significant other at their best 24/7.

16. Do you have any tattoos?

This can lead to some really good conversations, especially if they have a tattoo that has a lot of meaning to them!

17. Can you describe yourself in three words?

It's always interesting to see if how the person you're talking to views their personal traits lines ups with the vibes you're getting.

18. What makes you the most nervous in life?

This question can go multiple different directions, and it could also be a launching pad for other conversations.

19. What's the best gift you have ever received?

Admittedly, I have asked this question to friends as well, but it's neat to see what people value.

20. What do you do to relax/have fun?

Work hard, play hard, right?

21. What are your priorities at this phase of your life?

This is always interesting because no matter how compatible your personalities may be, if one of you wants to be serious and the other is looking for something casual, it's just not going to work.

How to Be a Tourist in Your Own City: 12 Easy & Creative Tips

With many of us forced to stay local for the foreseeable future, you may be looking for responsible and safe ways to keep your travel spirits high. If you can still move around, now may be the perfect time to get out and explore your own backyard.

There are lots of benefits to travelling local – including helping small businesses stay afloat. Supporting local tourism at a time when international visitors are down is critical to helping the industry survive.

Staying curious can lift your spirits during difficult times. Wandering your town or city on foot is a terrific way to get some exercise in and boost your immune system.

You may feel like you know your city inside and out – but trust me, there’s always something new to learn. Take a leaf out of Ferris Bueller’s book – tick off those bucket-list items you’ve never got around to; seek out your own ‘I-think-I-can-see-my-dad’ moment .

Here are 12 easy and budget-friendly tips for being a tourist in your own city.

12 ways to be a tourist in your own city

1. take your camera for a walk.

One of my favourite ways to get a fresh perspective on a familiar place is by looking at it through the lens. I used to pack my camera away as soon as I arrived home after a trip, thinking I’d seen it all and that my city was ‘boring’ in comparison.

In reality, there are probably just as many photo opportunities close to home as abroad.

Try using a macro lens to pick up the small details you’d otherwise miss. You don’t have to visit tourist spots necessarily – it can be just as rewarding to photograph architecture, nature or street scenes, depending on your interests.

Photographing a place where you feel comfortable and confident can be a great opportunity to push the boundaries and hone your skills. I’ve even taken photography tours in my home city – they’re always a lot of fun!

2. Get up for sunrise

Another way to get a new look at your town is by going out at a different time of day. Rising early might already be part of your routine – but how often do you go out sightseeing at daybreak?

Go for an early morning stroll before the city wakes up (a great way to get some exercise while practicing social distancing), or head somewhere for a golden hour view. If your town has a popular sunrise or sunset spot for tourists that you’ve never been to, give it a go and see what it’s like.

Welcoming the day by watching the sun come up always helps me feel humble and connected. It can be a great way to brighten your mood during dark times.

3. Visit a viewpoint

One of the first things I do when I arrive at a new destination is go somewhere for a view. I find that getting a bird’s eye perspective helps me orientate myself while getting a feel for the scale and layout of a place.

I can’t remember the last time I drove or walked to a lookout point in my own city… Shame on me! This is a classic example of an activity that I always put on the back burner, thinking I’ll get around to it the next time a friend visits.

Does your town or city have a lookout point that’s popular among tourists? Check it out for yourself – maybe it will give you a new appreciation for the beauty of your city.

If you're in between trips, you might find the travel inspiration you need in your own backyard. Here are 12 ways to be a tourist in your own city.

4. Walk a route you normally drive

It’s easy to let the world flicker by when you’re in the car or riding on public transport. Even if you’re looking out the window, you’re always bound to miss things.

There are probably routes you take to work or school that you think you know inside out. Try walking part of the way instead and see what new things you can spot from street level.

When life returns to normal, you’ll have a renewed sense of appreciation for those paths well-trodden.

5. Borrow a guidebook

Even if you’re an avid guidebook reader, chances are you’ve never picked up a guide to your own town or city. That’s a huge untapped resource!

Head to your local library to borrow a book or download a PDF. See how many sights you’ve never seen or activities you’ve never experienced, then start a local bucket list. If you think you’re an expert on your hometown now, just wait until you’ve hit up all the tourist spots.

6. Be a tourist in your own city by joining a guided tour

This one might seem obvious, but if you want a history lesson or an alternative hands-on experience, a surefire way to experience your city from a tourists’ perspective is by joining a guided excursion. Free walking tours are perfect because they usually combine history and local tips.

A self-guided walking tour can also be fun. When you’re wandering around, be sure to read any information panels – I’ll be you’ve never stopped to read those plaques before.

If you're in between trips, you might find the travel inspiration you need in your own backyard. Here are 12 ways to be a tourist in your own city.

7. Follow a blogger’s itinerary

On a similar note, it can be fun to follow in the footsteps of an outsider who has spent a limited amount of time in your city. Search online for curated itineraries from bloggers or travel writers – even better if they have different interests to you – and see what their top picks are.

Check out some of the spots they endorse then leave them a comment or write them an email to tell them what you thought. As a blogger myself, I always appreciate recommendations from locals on what to visit next time I’m in town.

8. Write your own city guide

On the flipside, you could try taking on the role of author yourself. There’s no one better qualified to write a city guide than a local, after all! What are the must-sees? What should people avoid? If a tourist asked you for a personal recommendation, where would you point them?

Travellers usually approach cities from a completely different angle to locals. Putting yourself in the shoes of an ‘outsider’ can really help to refocus your worldview.

Write your own online itinerary, make a photo guide, record a video or use social media to share your tips – future travellers will love your recommendations. This is a great way to promote your favourite local businesses, too.

9. Retrace an artist’s footsteps

Maybe there’s a movie or TV series that was filmed in your city, or a novel set in your area. If you need some extra inspiration, you could watch/read then visit some of the locations mentioned.

Alternatively, get acquainted with a local painter or sculptor and seek out the locations where they found artistic inspiration. One of my favourite books of all time is set in my hometown – I always get a pang of nostalgia and pride when I walk down streets or past cafes named in the story.

If you're in between trips, you might find the travel inspiration you need in your own backyard. Here are 12 ways to be a tourist in your own city.

10. Seek out the popular Instagram spots

Every city and town has (in)famous Instagram spots these days. Whether it’s a city sign, a viewpoint or some other beautiful backdrop, places where tourists flock for photos may be totally off a local’s radar (I can think of a few examples in my own city that I know are popular but that I’ve never bothered to visit myself).

Be a tourist for the day – go on a selfie treasure hunt and snap photos solo or with a friend . If you’re anything like me, your photo library is probably lacking images from your own city – now’s your chance to fix that once and for all!

11. Eat at your town’s most touristy restaurant

Are there venues in your town or city that tourists love but locals avoid ? If you can’t think of any, here’s where that guidebook or blogger’s itinerary might come in handy!

Play tourist and take yourself out for a meal to see what all the fuss is about. Alternatively, you can order takeaway or delivery. This is the perfect way to champion small restaurant and cafe businesses that are struggling with the downturn in tourism.

12. Book a staycation

One of the best ways to give local businesses a boost is by booking a staycation close to home. It could be a hotel a few kilometres away or a guesthouse or homestay in a rural town nearby.

Ask your host for their recommendations and leaf through the brochures and flyers in the lobby – you might just pick up a few tips.

Eat at a small restaurant, visit a local museum, and do some classic touristy activities while you’re there. You’ll feel totally treated, and you’ll be giving local tourism a much-needed vote of confidence. If you have a positive experience, don’t forget to leave a review.

If you find yourself having to cancel international travel plans and stay home instead (whether it’s because of the current pandemic or something else entirely), that doesn’t mean you can’t fuel your passion for travel.

Take this opportunity to discover your own backyard – you might just find yourself falling in love with your home city or town. And when it’s safe to start travelling again, consider local tourism as a way to help the economy.

I hope this list has give you some inspiration for ways to be a tourist in your own city . Do you have any other tips to add? If so, please share them in the comments below.

Great tips, thanks I’ve used a lot of time with my camera the recent two years of the pandemic being a tourist in my own city and its surroundings. Usually on my cycle to get some necessary exercise for my health but also just walking. It’s been fun, both to revisit places I’ve not seen for many years and to find new attractions never seen before. And there are a lot of those, it seems…! I’m not a professional photographer, but enjoy every time I return with a good shot or two from my trips around town. Especially because it helps my memory later on.

That’s terrific Jesper, cycling is such a great way to explore! Thanks for your comment!

These tips rock! Thanks for writing this!

I never get to play tourist in our neck of the woods... usually, I'm the chauffeur... but the other day, I got to play tourist for the whole day, and I got to do a bunch of things that I've never done before.

Victoria... I know I know, it's not Vancouver, and aside from the fact that many people think that Vancouver should be the capital of BC... (and it used to be New Westminster... and we can blame Kingsway cutting diagonally across the lower mainland because of the fact that New West was the capital, and they needed an escape route to the coast just incase New West was attacked by river...)

But anyway, just past our fair city, on the water, I was awestruck by how beautiful where we live actually is. The Gulf Islands, the sun shining, calm water, a warm breeze... what a day to take the ferry to Vancouver Island.

vic6

Once in Victoria, I got to do two things that I've never done before.

One, check out the Parliament Building:

vic5

Two, go to the Royal BC Museum (sorry about the limited pics... wasn't really supposed to take pictures inside...):

vic2

Both were amazing, and combined with the natural beauty that lies right at our feet, made for amazing day to play tourist in my very own back yard.

Golden State Warriors Champion Reveals Decision on Future

This Warriors champion is not done playing yet

  • Author: Joey Linn

In this story:

NBA veteran JaVale McGee just completed his 15th season in the league, and is not contemplating retirement yet. Speaking with NBCSA , McGee said of his playing future, " Just to play basketball. Keep focusing, keep working."

McGee won two championships with the Golden State Warriors, and was rumored to be an option for them in free agency before he joined the Kings. On his experience in Sacramento, McGee told NBCSA, "I feel like my experience was fine. Great group of guys. Obviously wanted to go further and at least make the playoffs and go far in it, but it didn't work out. But hey, it happens sometimes. We just got to make sure we lock in this summer. Everybody get their work in and make sure they do what they need to do so we have a great season next year."

McGee did not get much playing time with the Kings, and likely will not find a much bigger role anywhere else next season, but he is not thinking about retiring just yet. If nothing else, McGee is a good veteran to have around as a player with championship experience. A three-time champion, two of which came with the Warriors, and another with the Los Angeles Lakers, McGee has been on some very good teams throughout his NBA career.

Biden Administration Releases Revised Title IX Rules

The new regulations extended legal protections to L.G.B.T.Q. students and rolled back several policies set under the Trump administration.

President Biden standing at a podium next to Education Secretary Miguel Cardona.

By Zach Montague and Erica L. Green

Reporting from Washington

The Biden administration issued new rules on Friday cementing protections for L.G.B.T.Q. students under federal law and reversing a number of Trump-era policies that dictated how schools should respond to cases of alleged sexual misconduct in K-12 schools and college campuses.

The new rules, which take effect on Aug. 1, effectively broadened the scope of Title IX, the 1972 law prohibiting sex discrimination in educational programs that receive federal funding. They extend the law’s reach to prohibit discrimination and harassment based on sexual orientation and gender identity, and widen the range of sexual harassment complaints that schools will be responsible for investigating.

“These regulations make it crystal clear that everyone can access schools that are safe, welcoming and that respect their rights,” Miguel A. Cardona, the education secretary, said in a call with reporters.

The rules deliver on a key campaign promise for Mr. Biden, who declared he would put a “quick end” to the Trump-era Title IX rules and faced mounting pressure from Democrats and civil rights leaders to do so.

The release of the updated rules, after two delays, came as Mr. Biden is in the thick of his re-election bid and is trying to galvanize key electoral constituencies.

Through the new regulations, the administration moved to include students in its interpretation of Bostock v. Clayton County, the landmark 2020 Supreme Court case in which the court ruled that the Civil Rights Act of 1964 protects gay and transgender workers from workplace discrimination. The Trump administration held that transgender students were not protected under federal laws, including after the Bostock ruling .

In a statement, Betsy DeVos, who served as Mr. Trump’s education secretary, criticized what she called a “radical rewrite” of the law, asserting that it was an “endeavor born entirely of progressive politics, not sound policy.”

Ms. DeVos said the inclusion of transgender students in the law gutted decades of protections and opportunities for women. She added that the Biden administration also “seeks to U-turn to the bad old days where sexual misconduct was sent to campus kangaroo courts, not resolved in a way that actually sought justice.”

While the regulations released on Friday contained considerably stronger protections for L.G.B.T.Q. students, the administration steered clear of the lightning-rod issue of whether transgender students should be able to play on school sports teams corresponding to their gender identity.

The administration stressed that while, writ large, exclusion based on gender identity violated Title IX, the new regulations did not extend to single-sex living facilities or sports teams. The Education Department is pursuing a second rule dealing with sex-related eligibility for male and female sports teams. The rule-making process has drawn more than 150,000 comments.

Under the revisions announced on Friday, instances where transgender students are subjected to a “hostile environment” through bullying or harassment, or face unequal treatment and exclusion in programs or facilities based on their gender identity, could trigger an investigation by the department’s Office for Civil Rights.

Instances where students are repeatedly referred to by a name or pronoun other than one they have chosen could also be considered harassment on a case-by-case basis.

“This is a bold and important statement that transgender and nonbinary students belong, in their schools and in their communities,” said Olivia Hunt, the policy director for the National Center for Transgender Equality.

The regulations appeared certain to draw to legal challenges from conservative groups.

May Mailman, the director of the Independent Women’s Law Center, said in a statement that the group planned to sue the administration. She said it was clear that the statute barring discrimination on the basis of “sex” means “binary and biological.”

“The unlawful omnibus regulation reimagines Title IX to permit the invasion of women’s spaces and the reduction of women’s rights in the name of elevating protections for ‘gender identity,’ which is contrary to the text and purpose of Title IX,” she said.

The existing rules, which took effect under Mr. Trump in 2020, were the first time that sexual assault provisions were codified under Title IX. They bolstered due process rights of accused students, relieved schools of some legal liabilities and laid out rigid parameters for how schools should conduct impartial investigations.

They were a sharp departure from the Obama administration’s interpretation of the law, which came in the form of unenforceable guidance documents directing schools to ramp up investigations into sexual assault complaints under the threat of losing federal funding. Scores of students who had been accused of sexual assault went on to win court cases against their colleges for violating their due process rights under the guidelines.

The Biden administration’s rules struck a balance between the Obama and Trump administration’s goals. Taken together, the regulation largely provides more flexibility for how schools conduct investigations, which advocates and schools have long lobbied for.

Catherine E. Lhamon, the head of the department’s Office for Civil Rights who also held the job under President Barack Obama, called the new rules the “most comprehensive coverage under Title IX since the regulations were first promulgated in 1975.”

They replaced a narrower definition of sex-based harassment adopted under the Trump administration with one that would include a wider range of conduct. And they reversed a requirement that schools investigate only incidents alleged to have occurred on their campuses or in their programs.

Still, some key provisions in the Trump-era rules were preserved, including one allowing informal resolutions and another prohibiting penalties against students until after an investigation.

Among the most anticipated changes was the undoing of a provision that required in-person, or so-called live hearings, in which students accused of sexual misconduct, or their lawyers, could confront and question accusers in a courtroom-like setting.

The new rules allow in-person hearings, but do not mandate them. They also require a process through which a decision maker could assess a party or witness’s credibility, including posing questions from the opposing party.

“The new regulations put an end to unfair and traumatic grievance procedures that favor harassers,” Kel O’Hara, a senior attorney at Equal Rights Advocates. “No longer will student survivors be subjected to processes that prioritize the interests of their perpetrators over their own well being and safety.”

The new rules also allow room for schools to use a “preponderance of evidence” standard, a lower burden of proof than the DeVos-era rules encouraged, through which administrators need only to determine whether it was more likely than not that sexual misconduct had occurred.

The renewed push for that standard drew criticism from legal groups who said the rule stripped away hard-won protections against flawed findings.

“When you are dealing with accusations of really one of the most heinous crimes that a person can commit — sexual assault — it’s not enough to say, ‘50 percent and a feather,’ before you brand someone guilty of this repulsive crime,” said Will Creeley, the legal director of the Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression.

The changes concluded a three-year process in which the department received 240,000 public comments. The rules also strengthen protections for pregnant students, requiring accommodations such as a bigger desk or ensuring access to elevators and prohibiting exclusion from activities based on additional needs.

Title IX was designed to end discrimination based on sex in educational programs or activities at all institutions receiving federal financial assistance, beginning with sports programs and other spaces previously dominated by male students.

The effects of the original law have been pronounced. Far beyond the impact on school programs like sports teams, many educators credit Title IX with setting the stage for academic parity today. Female college students routinely outnumber male students on campus and have become more likely than men of the same age to graduate with a four-year degree.

But since its inception, Title IX has also become a powerful vehicle through which past administrations have sought to steer schools to respond to the dynamic and diverse nature of schools and universities.

While civil rights groups were disappointed that some ambiguity remains for the L.G.B.T.Q. students and their families, the new rules were widely praised for taking a stand at a time when education debates are reminiscent to the backlash after the Supreme Court ordered schools to integrate.

More than 20 states have passed laws that broadly prohibit anyone assigned male at birth from playing on girls’ and women’s sports teams or participating in scholastic athletic programs, while 10 states have laws barring transgender people from using bathrooms based on their gender identity.

“Some adults are showing up and saying, ‘I’m going to make school harder for children,” said Liz King, senior program director of the education equity program at the Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights. “It’s an incredibly important rule, at an incredibly important moment.”

Schools will have to cram over the summer to implement the rules, which will require a retraining staff and overhauling procedures they implemented only four years ago.

Ted Mitchell, the president of the American Council on Education, which represents more than 1,700 colleges and universities, said in a statement that while the group welcomed the changes in the new rule, the timeline “disregards the difficulties inherent in making these changes on our nation’s campuses in such a short period of time.”

“After years of constant churn in Title IX guidance and regulations,” Mr. Mitchell said, “we hope for the sake of students and institutions that there will be more stability and consistency in the requirements going forward.”
