Along with acts such as My Bloody Valentine, Cocteau Twins, and Slowdive, the British experimental pop group Ride helped lay the framework for the shoegaze genre. They are noted for layering sounds into complicated and lush mosaics, while maintaining a strong presence of pop sensibilities.

Ride formed in Oxford, England in 1988 and consisted of members Andy Bell, Laurence Colbert, Mark Gardener, and Steve Queralt. Before the group’s formation Bell and Garderner were involved in musical theatre at Cheney School in Oxford, but eventually went on to study art and design at North Oxfordshire located in Banbury. They met fellow student Colbert there and recruited him to be the band’s drummer. Queralt (who was in the reggae/pop band the Spiderbacks with Bell) became the group’s bassist. The members shared a love for 60s psychedelic rock bands like the Velvet Underground, Pink Floyd and the Byrds as well as 80s noise-pop acts such as Spaceman 3 and Sonic Youth; however, Ride reportedly owes it’s existence to The Smiths (one of their performances was a life-altering experience for Bell).

Ride recorded their first demo in 1988, which consisted of the songs “Chelsea Girls” and “Drive Blind”. Jim Reid, the lead singer of the Jesus & Mary Chain heard the demo and impressed by the group’s sound past it on to his manager Alan McGee. Less than a year later McGee signed the band to Creation Records. Ride proved to be one of the labels most promising acts. Within 9 months the band had recorded and released 3 EPs “Ride”, “Play”, and “Fall” all which entered the UK Top 75.

On 15 October 1990, Ride released their studio debut “Nowhere”. The album included all of tracks on their “Fall” EP as well as an additional 4 newly recorded songs. It was a commercial and critical landmark for the group, going silver in the UK and rising to No. 11 on the charts. The album has been recognized as an essential record of the shoegaze genre (a label the band often rejects) and likewise one of the greatest albums of the 90s. One of the album’s songs “Vapour Trail” has left a strong impression on popular culture as well. It appeared at No.145 on Pitchfork’s Top 200 Tracks and was also mentioned in the book “Perks of Being a Wallflower”.

Due to the hype created from their studio debut, fans were eager to hear a new recording form the band. Ride answered their audience’s demand with their 1991 EP “Today Forever”. As “Nowhere” established the group as noise-rock heroes “Today Forever” acted as an erasure for that title and saw the group headed towards a more pop oriented direction. Despite the change in sound the EP did well commercially and critically and was followed by a near-instantly sold out tour of Japan.

The band toured excessively around this time and the strain it placed on the members started to show; however, they returned with another ecstatically reviewed and commercially accepted album “Going Blank Again”. This was followed by more touring, this time alongside the brit-pop group the Charlatans.

Around the time of the recording of their 3rd album “Carnival of Light” the band was self-reportedly delving into extreme indulgence and treated their music on a secondary level. Inevitably the album received harsh reactions from both critics and the band themselves. Their next album “Tarantula” did not do much better. The band was starting to implode at this point, stemmed largely by disagreements between Bell and Gardner. The writing on the album was split between the 2 musicians, with Bell accounting for most of the material. The album struggled on the charts and was dismissed by critics, eventually being dropped by its label within 1 week of sales.

Roughly 6 years after the band’s demise they appeared in a Sonic Youth documentary and played a 20 minute jam session for the film, which was later released in 2002 as “Coming up for Air”. In November of 2014 the band announced that they would be reuniting and released a string of tour dates including gigs in Glasgow, Manchester, Paris, Amsterdam, Barcelona, and New York.

Live reviews

Back together and ready to perform Nowhere in full Ride split this effectively acting as their own support. The first set opens with an epic Leave Them All Behind lasting close on 15 minutes. The sound is superb and they sound like a band who have played together continuously for 25 years not one who have had a hiatus. Gardener and Bell play off each other while Colbert's drumming sets the pace with Queralt's bass. From this it's straight into Like A Daydream and a trawl through the non Nowhere backcatalogue, which sounds surprisingly fresh and actually better than I remember it sounding on record - making me want to go back and revisit it a bit more. Gardener's voice is strong and the guitar work, as you would expect, superb.

A brief intermission and change of backdrop to the iconic cover and it's straight to Nowhere. What we get is a stunning interpretation of the album. Given there's not a weak track on the album it makes for a blissful 45 to 50 minutes. Nowhere finished we cut into Taste, Here And Now and Nowhere before a blistering encore of the classics Drive Blind and Chelsea Girl. Drive Blind featuring an extraordinary breakdown in the middle in a squall of guitars and feedback with dramatic lighting - it sounds and feels like the soundtrack to the end of the world.

This sounds and feels like a band relaxed and at the top of their game.

While it was common in the day to lump Ride in with other members of the pre-Oasis Britpop scene like The Stone Roses or Slowdive, this Oxford quartet seemed happy to do their own thing. Embracing a less-immediate, more sprawling art rock sound that gave them more in common with 4AD bands, Ride were just as likely to kick into 15 minutes of swirling, psychedelic guitars as anything.

Seeing Ride live is to realize that guitarist Mark Gardener and bassist Andy Bell are not only gifted musicians, but also able to blend their voices in deceptively smooth harmonies. The band plays louder than one might expect from their airier sound on record, although for fans of shoegaze that's nothing unexpected. The best part of seeing Ride in concert is hearing how songs like “Seagull”, “Vapour Trail”, or especially “Leave Them All Behind” lend themselves to extended jams and sprawling, acid-drenched guitar workouts. In fact, at times they almost edge into the hippest prog rock ever played.

There's really no frills to how Ride present themselves on stage; the band makes it clear that their performance is all about the music. Don't expect drama, don't expect fog machines or pyrotechnics. When you're as great as Ride, the music and performance stands on its own merit.

British shoe gazing pioneers Ride have delighted fans by announcing a reformation to collate their classic four albums into a 'greatest hits' setlist of sorts. They were always known as pioneers of their time and they weren't afraid to take their sound in a different direction to the Britpop boom that became synonymous with the 90's.

The comeback gigs have been attended by a huge range of fans, those who have eagerly awaited the return after supporting the group during their heyday and those who are late arrivals to the band's music. Either way, the reaction is one of universal adoration as the group step onstage and begin a psychedelic setlist featuring classics including 'Twisterella' and 'Leave Them All Behind'. The band thanks the audience for their support and explains they were an integral part of the reformation. By the final tones of 'Like A Daydream' and 'Chelsea Girl' everybody inside is incredibly glad to have Ride back together and feeling as though a decade had been lost waiting for the reform.

When i heard Ride was coming to Minneapolis, I was skeptical, why flyover country? When I heard which venue I knew I had to go. Mill City Nights is a small, but the sound is great. The opening band Canadian's Besnard Lakes was an atmospheric wandering which used lots of fog and harmonies to wash into the crowd.

If Besnard Lakes made the crowd smile while rocking back and forth, Ride blew those smiles to the back of the hall. Digging into all of their music history Ride, played a little something from every release.

Ride let a wall of sound blast into everyone on the floor where you could not only hear the excellent songs but feel them.

I figured it would be good, I left feeling it was great, a top 5 concert.

Such an amazing show, loved hearing Vapour Trail, and Today live. Like a Daydream, Sennen, Chelsea Girl, and Dreams Burn Down were also highlights for me, really the whole concert. Seagull may have been the best song of the show, I like the song, but it was a different level live. One final note, Drive Blind was the single loudest song I have ever heard, it was so loud and there was so much sound with feedback and reverberations, it was almost like it was silent, crazy. Highly, highly recommend getting to see Ride live whenever you can!!

Absolutely brilliant gig shame about the bar.

I was not sure what to expect but they nailed it. More than once I was transported else where on a wall noise that shimmered and dazzled with beautiful textures and tones.

The only downside was that I missed the first couple of songs of the second set due to the bar not being able to cope with the volume of customers.

It was worth the the 300 mile round trip!

Opened with Leave Them All Behind and continued with mostly all their strong songs from their EPs and first two albums. Loz drumming was spot on and Andy and Mark showed their guitar work has never been better. Sound was boomy upstairs but better view. No one should miss this tour.

Small personal venue - it was awesome seeing Ride in such an intimate setting. Hadn't seen them in over 25 years but unlike most bands that reunite, they don't seem to have missed a beat. Great mixture of classics with the new stuff.

Fantastic show from start to finish. Great energy and they just sounded tight throughout. Highly recommend seeing them.

They can get very heavy at times, so bring earplugs and you'll be fine.

I cannot wait to see them again

Ride Announce 2024 North American, U.K. Tour Dates

The U.K. rockers Ride revealed tour dates in support of their new album Interplay , set to be released March 29. Known for being pioneers of shoegaze, an alternative rock subgenre, Ride will meet their North American fans in May, and tour across the U.K. and Ireland in September.

We are excited to announce our UK / Ireland & North America tour, in celebration of the release of our upcoming album 'Interplay', on March 29th. pic.twitter.com/62t2Wa7zfQ — RIDE (@rideox4) February 12, 2024

The North American leg of the trek kicks-off in Portsmouth at 3S Artspace on May 8, followed by gigs in Boston, Toronto, Chicago, Denver, Vancouver, Portland, and more before concluding at the Showbox in Seattle on May 25.

The shoegaze greats will head to their homeland to perform in several major cities as part of their run, including Dublin, Glasgow, Liverpool, Manchester, Leeds, London, and more in the fall months. They’ll be touring all over the island, starting from Belfast on September 2 before arriving at their final stop in Cambridge on September 22. Ride will also make appearances at Release Athens in Greece on June 20, Vida Festival in Spain on July 4, and Fuji Rock Festival in Japan on July 26.

Prior to the tour announcement, Ride unveiled a new single titled “Last Frontier,” the second preview of their seventh album, Interplay . The forthcoming record will be Ride’s first album in five years. Since their reunion in 2014, the band dropped two albums: Weather Diaries (2017) and This Is Not a Safe Place (2019).

Ride, formed in 1988, includes vocalists and guitarists Andy Bell and Mark Gardener, drummer Laurence “Loz” Colbert, and bassist Steve Queralt. The group made a breakthrough with 1990 and 1992 albums, titled Nowhere and Going Blank Again, respectively, which were later considered two of the greatest shoegaze records of all-time.

Speaking to NME last month, Ride explained that their forthcoming album, Interplay , was sonically signposted by the likes of Tears For Fears, Talk Talk, and ’80s era U2 and Depeche Mode – influences they wouldn’t have dared approach back in the ’90s.

In a statement, frontman Andy Bell said that the band’s latest single, “Last Frontier,” was initially “the runt of the litter of the very first jam session.”

“It was our producer, Richie Kennedy, who saw the potential of the song,” Bell continued, “and we attacked this with a vengeance at Vada studio. A complete revamp of the backing track and arrangement was needed and we took it right back to basics, more towards a pounding Joy Division feel.”

Ride tickets are available on the band’s official website . Fans can also score tickets by visiting secondary marketplaces like MegaSeats (use code “TICKETNEWS” for 10% off), StubHub , or Ticket Club , where members can receive a free membership with the code “TICKETNEWS.”

The Charlatans and Ride have announced plans for a North American co-headline tour, set to begin January 30, 2023 at New York City’s Webster Hall and then continue through a February 18 finale at The Wiltern in Los Angeles, CA. Tickets for all announced dates go on sale Friday, December 2 at 10 am (local).

In 1993, The Charlatans and Ride co-headlined Daytripper—two now-legendary concert events held in the British seaside towns of Brighton and Blackpool. The upcoming North American tour will once again see the two bands trading off the headline slot each night, with both performing classic albums in full–The Charlatans performing 1992’s landmark sophomore LP, Between 10th and 11th , and Ride performing 1990’s debut masterpiece, Nowhere –along with a selection of greatest hits, fan favorites, and more.

The Charlatans have been on a remarkable journey for over three decades, from their beginnings as 1990 Manchester scene hopefuls to their current role as one of the most durable and treasured bands in British music, joined by a passionate and loyal following that has given them lasting success. Somehow, the band have not just carried on during this run but adapted and transformed. The classic Charlatans sound–driving Hammond organ, Northern Soul and house-influenced rhythms, swaggering guitars, and Tim Burgess’s sunny yet somehow yearning vocals–is instantly recognizable.

‘begin again’: how norah jones tore up her own rulebook, how hole had their cake and ate it too with ‘live through this’.

Hailed by PopMatters as “a certifiable classic,” Between 10th and 11th was originally released in 1992 and features such classic singles as “Tremolo Song,” “I Don’t Want To See The Sights,” and the band’s biggest US hit to date, “Weirdo.” More recently, The Charlatans celebrated their own 30th anniversary with 2021’s career-spanning best-of, A Head Full of Ideas , and a similarly titled 2021-22 world tour.

In addition, frontman Tim Burgess has created the hugely popular Tim’s Twitter Listening Party, an ongoing series of real-time album playbacks via Twitter, featuring stories from bands and fans, rarely seen images, and exclusive insights and anecdotes from the artists who created some of music’s most iconic albums.

Missy Elliott Announces First-Ever Headlining Tour with Ciara, Timbaland and Busta Rhymes — See the Dates!

"Fans have been asking me to tour forever but I wanted to wait until I felt the time was right," said the Grammy-winning rapper of the upcoming 24-city trek

Get ready to travel to another galaxy with Missy Elliott .

On April 8, the Grammy-winning rapper announced her first-ever headlining tour, billed as Out of This World — The Missy Elliott Experience, set to hit 24 cities throughout North America this summer with Ciara , Busta Rhymes and Timbaland joining for the ride.

"This is an incredible time in my life as I am experiencing so many milestone ‘firsts.’ Being the FIRST female Hip Hop artist to be inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame and now going out on my FIRST headline tour," said Elliott, 52, in a statement.

"Fans have been asking me to tour forever," continued the "Get Ur Freak On" performer," but I wanted to wait until I felt the time was right because I knew if I was ever going to do it, I had to do it big, and I had to do it with family!"

Elliott's statement concluded, "So get ready to be taken OUT OF THIS WORLD with me, Busta Rhymes, Ciara, and Timbaland! We can’t wait to share this experience with the fans!"

Most of the artists on the tour bill have worked together throughout their careers. Elliott and Timbaland are longtime tight-knit collaborators, having written and produced for each other as well as artists including 702,  Aaliyah , SWV and Total.

Ciara featured Elliott on her 2004 hit "1, 2 Step," and they reunited the following year for the rapper's 2005 hit "Lose Control" with Fatman Scoop. More recently, all three artists got back together for a remix of Ciara's 2018 single "Level Up."

Busta Rhymes has collaborated with all three tourmates, having notably provided several Timbaland-produced interludes on Elliott's albums in the past. Timbaland, however, hasn't yet released an official collaboration with Ciara — but maybe the tour will spark one.

Fuerza Regida new album scores Pero No Te Enamores tour: How to get tickets, concert dates

Fresas y beliconas, get ready for another unforgettable Fuerza Regida tour.

The Mexican American band, hailing from San Bernadino, California, announced a 32-date U.S. arena tour produced by Live Nation on Tuesday. Fuerza Regida's Pero No Te Enamores Tour (But Don't Fall in Love Tour) will kick off June 6 in Austin, Texas, at the Moody Center, followed by a June 9 concert in Edinburg, Texas, at the Bert Ogden Arena.

The five-man group, fronted by singer Jesús Ortiz Paz, will also play dates in San Diego, Phoenix, Seattle, San Jose, Las Vegas, San Antonio and Palm Desert. In October and November, Fuerza Regida will head to Mexico for seven shows before returning to the U.S. for its last show in Inglewood, California, at the Intuit Dome on Nov. 16.

Jesús Ortiz Paz of Fuerza Regida talks Mexican music's global rise

Fuerza Regida's upcoming nationwide tour follows a 2023 full of major accomplishments for the group.

In October, the group released its biggest album to date, "Pa Las Baby's Y Belikeada," which peaked at No. 2 on Billboard's Latin Albums chart and reached the Top 15 of the Billboard 200. Standout hits from the album include "TQM," "Sabor Fresa" and "Harley Quinn," which each charted on the Billboard Hot 100. "Harley Quinn," a collaboration with Marshmello, became the band's first-ever No. 1 hit on the Latin Airplay chart.

"Pa Las Baby's Y Belikeada" also earned Fuerza Regida a pair of awards — Top Duo/Group and Top Latin Duo/Group — at the 2023 Billboard Music Awards in November.

In a 2023 interview with USA TODAY, Paz spoke about Fuerza Regida leading the movement in expanding the global reach of Mexican music.

"We got into this business six years ago, and there was nothing like it," he said. "So, we're pioneers of this too. It took six years for us because everyone has a different career, but for us, to see Mexican music go global — there are no words. We're up with the rappers, the reggaetoneros. Mexican music's No. 1 right now."

Most recently, the band released its EP, "Dolido Pero No Arrepentido." The album debuted at No. 2 on Billboard's Regional Mexican Albums chart.

"The goal is to keep on staying on top, and like they say, 'Hard work beats talent.' So, we just don't stop working," Paz added. "And hopefully in the next six years, we're still on top, making global hits and still selling out stadiums and arenas — that's what we wish for, and hopefully it goes down."

When do Fuerza Regida tickets go on sale?

Tickets will go on sale Friday at 10 a.m. local time at livenation.com

Fans can also purchase VIP packages, which may include premium tickets, access to the VIP after-party with band members, soundcheck, a meet-and-greet, a group photo with Fuerza Regida, pre-show VIP lounge access, specially designed VIP gift items and more. "We continue to monitor the weather closely," read a post from the tournament on X. "Gate openings and tee times have been delayed until further notice. The first round will not begin before 9 a.m."

According to weather.com, it is expected to be cloudy from 7-8 a.m. but there is a chance of scattered thunderstorms from 8-10 a.m.

Updated: Wednesday, April 10 7 p.m. ET : The Masters has issued a weather update, noting that patron admission will be delayed Thursday due to adverse weather conditions expected overnight and into the morning.

"Due to forecasted weather on Thursday, we have decided to delay all gate openings in the morning," the Masters posted on X, formerly Twitter. "All Masters free parking will be closed until further notice while gate openings are delayed. Further updates will be shared no later than 5 a.m. via Masters.com and social channels."

Updated: Wednesday, April 10 10 a.m. ET: AUGUSTA, Ga. – The first round of the 88th Masters Tournament could be affected by inclement weather as dangerous conditions are predicted to arrive early Thursday.

There’s a 90% chance of showers and thunderstorms prior to 1 p.m., with wind gusts of 40-45 mph between 8 a.m. ET and noon. That would create potentially dangerous conditions and push back tee times, possibly bringing Friday into play for the conclusion of Round 1.

Last year’s Masters was also affected by weather, with second-round play pushed to Saturday and third-round play pushed to Sunday, when eventual winner Jon Rahm and co-runner-up Brooks Koepka played 30 holes.

Severe weather began slamming the southern United States on Tuesday night, continued into Wednesday and was expected to reach the Augusta area first thing Thursday.

According to the Masters Tournament weather update:

“A cold front is forecast to bring a band of rain and scattered thunderstorms through the region between 6 a.m.-1 p.m. ET Thursday. Heavy rainfall and occasional wind gusts of 40-45 mph are anticipated over this period. A lull in precipitation should occur behind the cold front between 1-4 p.m. ET before scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms drift back into the region for the late afternoon and evening hours.

“Windy conditions persist Friday under mostly sunny skies as a dry and stable airmass settles into the area. Mostly sunny skies can be expected through the weekend with west to southwesterly winds in the 7-15 mph range.”

  • Thursday: Mostly cloudy with a 90% chance of showers and thunderstorms prior to 1 p.m. ET. Partly cloudy with a 40% chance of showers and isolated thunderstorms after 4 p.m. Forecast rainfall: 1-1 1/2 inches. Wind gusts of 40-45 mph between 8 a.m.-noon. Low: 65F High: 77F Winds: S shifting SW 15-25; gusts 30-35 mph.
  • Friday: Mostly sunny and windy. Noticeably less humid. Low: 54F High: 72F Winds: W 15-20; gusts 30 mph.
  • Saturday: Mostly sunny and warm. Low: 49F High: 78F Winds: WNW turning W 7-15 mph.
  • Sunday: Mostly sunny and warm. Low: 53F High: 84F Winds: W turning SW 7-15 mph.

The Masters has dealt with its share of weather conditions in recent years. The final round of Tiger Woods’ iconic 2019 victory came hours earlier than scheduled to avoid impending storms. Last year’s leaders played 30 holes on Sunday as storms wiped out much of the third round.

This year’s Masters is largely devoid of rainy conditions, with Thursday as the lone exception. According to the official Augusta National weather forecast, there is an 80% chance of showers and thunderstorms on Thursday, with an expected rainfall of 1.00-1.50 inches.

“Isolated light showers are possible Tuesday and Wednesday before rain and thunderstorms arrive early Thursday and continue throughout the morning hours. A cold front is expected to pass through in the early afternoon, with diminishing precipitation chances for the remainder of Thursday. Thunderstorm wind gusts of 40-45 mph will be possible,” the official forecast stated.

Conditions are expected to clear up by Thursday afternoon and stay dry through the rest of the tournament. Here’s a day-by-day breakdown of the official Augusta National weather forecast:

  • Monday: Mostly sunny. Low: 48F High: 79F Winds: S 7-10 mph
  • Tuesday : Cloudy with a 25% chance of light showers. Low: 58F High: 77F Winds: SSE 5-10 mph
  • Wednesday : Cloudy with a 20% chance of light showers during the day and a 70% chance of showers and thunderstorms after midnight. Low: 62F High: 80F Winds: S-SE 10-15, gusts up to 20 mph
  • Thursday : Mostly cloudy with an 80% chance of showers and thunderstorms. Windy. Forecast rainfall: 1.00-1.50” Low: 65F High: 78F Winds: S shifting SW 15-20 gusts up to 30 mph
  • Friday : Mostly sunny and windy; noticeably less humid. Low: 56F High: 73F Winds: WNW 15-20 gusts up to 30 mph
  • Saturday : Mostly sunny and warm. Low: 50F High: 78F Winds: WNW turning W 7-12 mph
  • Sunday*: Mostly cloudy. Low: 61F: High 82F Winds: SW 6-13 mph, gusts of 17 mph
