On a trip to Ireland last week, we used the services of Executive Hire. Our driver, Adrian “Hoppy” Hopkins was the best! He is very accommodating and a true gentleman. Hoppy’s vast knowledge of Ireland was evident during our tour; we visited many places during our stay in Limerick and learned so much! Wow! Cannot express our gratitude in words for the royal treatment we received every minute of every day or evening with Executive Hire. At one point we missed seeing the sheep dog demonstration (our mistake not Alfie’s) a few days later he surprised us with another demonstration in the Buren. We were treated like princesses and it took my 30 year old daughter about a day to allow Alfie to open doors and escort her across roads. Mom had no problem enjoying this treatment from the first moment. Now Kelly will be looking for a true gentleman. Alfie raised the bar for her. My husband sends his many thanks and best regards to Alfie for keeping his girls so safe and watching over us the entire time. If you are considering Executive Hire please book. 3 Day Tour of Ireland

We had a great trip to Ireland thanks to Hoppy. He is an amazing guide who has a lot of knowledge and a great sense of humor. He had quite a few off-the-beaten-path stops that we would have never found on our own. His restaurant recommendations were all great. I would highly recommend him.

Our tour of south-west ireland.

We were extremely impressed with Alfie Earls, our driver and extra-ordinary tour guide. On a scale of 1 – 5, Alfie ‘absolutely’ rates a five. Mike Ryan worked hand in hand with us in creating our two week magnificent tour of Ireland. The best way to tour ireland.

This was my 2nd experience with the Mike Ryan Tour Group. They did not disappoint us. Patrick our driver was awesome. Very accommodating. The trip was well planned. They set us up in great hotels – the Savoy on Limerick, Actons in Kinsales, the Plaza in Killarney and the Dunraven in Adare. The golf was spectacular too. We visited Lahinch, Old Head, Dooks and Tralee. Great tracks and great caddies. No Irish visit is complete without a stop at the Jameson Distillery in Midleton. Fantastic time. Thank you Mike. The first trip was 8 guys and all golf. The 2nd was 4 couples with golf and tourist stops. A great time was had by all.

Lost and Found Tour – Shannon to Dublin, two 50+ couples from USA on an 7 day cross country adventure

Bucket list trip to Ireland with long time friends of ours. We had a blast. Have never done the personal tour guide options before and would highly recommend it. Mike Ryan, the owner of the company was very agreeable to work with. Most of our communications back and forth was via e-mail. He was very responsive to our many questions and needs. Even available via cell during our trip. We were able to tell Mike our interests, wants and needs and, together, we created a very personal itinerary that you could never get on your standardized bus tour. Brendan “The Navigator”, our tour guide was great. Always on time, always where he said he would be when he said he would be there. Brendan seemed very local and very well know by everyone. He was always negotiating better service, better prices and/or better experiences for us at every stop. He always seemed to have his own parking space wherever we went. Having our own tour guide in a very comfortable van allowed us to go places that larger tour buses were not allowed to drive. Brendan could flex our schedules as to avoid the usually six tour buses carrying 500 people descending upon the locals in a horde. He knew what we wanted to see and do, but also took time for valued added stops and adventures that we could have had no idea existed prior to being there.

The State Tretyakov Gallery

The State Tretyakov Gallery (usually being called Tretyakovka) is an art gallery in Moscow, specialized in Russian visual arts and it’s one of the world’s biggest collections. Are REAL IDs mandatory in NC? Are REAL IDs different than driver's licenses? What to know

Starting May 7, 2025, you'll need a United States passport, REAL ID or other federally approved identification in order to board any commercial flight and enter secure federal buildings.

You won't need a REAL ID to drive, vote, apply for or receive federal benefits, enter a federal facility that does not require an ID such as a post office, access a hospital or receive life-saving services or participate in law enforcement proceedings or investigations such as serving on a jury or testifying in court.

However, there are plenty of reasons why you might still want a REAL ID. Here's what to know about why you might need a REAL ID, where to get one, whether to sign up now and more.

What is a REAL ID?

The NC REAL ID is a REAL ID Act-compliant driver license. It is essentially the same as a traditional license or ID, but has a star at the top. Driver licenses and IDs without a gold star are now noted "Not for Federal Identification."

What is the purpose of NC REAL ID?

Congress passed the REAL ID Act in 2005 to establish enhanced security standards in response to the 9/11 terrorist attacks.

The REAL ID Act will be federally enforced starting on May 7, 2025, and will require a REAL ID, U.S. passport or another federally approved identification to board commercial flights and enter secure federal buildings.

How to get a REAL ID: What do I need for a REAL ID in NC?

The requirements for REAL IDs are similar to standard licensing requirements. To be issued a REAL ID, you'll need to go into a driver license office with the following documents:

  • One document with your full name proving identity and date of birth.
  • ​​One document with your full name and full Social Security Number confirming Social Security number.
  • Two documents with current physical address proving North Carolina residency​.
  • One document proving liability insurance coverage from a provider licensed to do business in North Carolina (not required for a learner's permit).
  • If applicable, one or more documents verifying any name change.
  • ​For non-U.S. citizens, one document with your full name proving legal presence/lawful status.

What does a NC REAL ID cost?

There is no added fee for an NC REAL ID license or ID card. The cost is the same as a standard driver license or ID card; $5.50 for all non-commercial licenses.

The cost is the same as a renewal if you get a REAL ID within six months of expiration. If you get it outside the renewal period, the cost is the same as a duplicate, $14.

Can I use a REAL ID instead of a passport? Do I need a REAL ID if I have a passport?

In certain areas, a REAL ID can be used instead of a passport. Starting May 7, 2025, you'll need either a REAL ID or another form of federally approved documentation (such as a passport) in order to fly domestically and enter federal facilities.

For international travel, however, you'll still need a passport. A REAL ID does not replace a passport for international flights, international sea cruise travel or any other travel involving crossing the U.S. border into another country.

Is REAL ID mandatory in NC?

NC REAL ID licenses and ID cards are completely optional. However, when enforcement of the REAL ID Act begins on May 7, 2025, you may want an NC REAL ID if you fly frequently or regularly visit:

  • Military bases
  • Nuclear sites
  • Federal prisons
  • Federal courthouses
  • Other federal facilities

While it won't be necessary to have a REAL ID in order to fly or enter these facilities, you'll need to provide additional identification along with your standard license or ID every time.

Can I get a REAL ID online?

You can't get your first NC REAL ID cannot be online. You'll need to go to a​​ ​driver license office, where the required documents listed above will be scanned and permanently stored in your NCDMV record.

You can, however, renew your NC REAL ID online after you're issued one, as you would with a normal driver license.

WHIAANHPI and SmithsonianAPA Unveil Joint Theme for 2024 Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander Heritage Month: ‘Bridging Histories, Shaping Our Future’

The White House Initiative on Asian Americans, Native Hawaiians, and Pacific Islanders and the Smithsonian Asian Pacific American Center issue call for intergenerational connection, action, and reflection.

The White House and WHIAANHPI will convene over 1,000 AA and NHPI leaders on May 13 for a landmark celebration at the Andrew W. Mellon Auditorium.

Today, the White House Initiative on Asian Americans, Native Hawaiians, and Pacific Islanders (WHIAANHPI) and the Smithsonian Asian Pacific American Center are proud to present our joint 2024 theme for Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander (AA and NHPI) Heritage Month: “Bridging Histories, Shaping Our Future.”

Since the late 1970s, our country has recognized the invaluable contributions of AA and NHPI communities each May. For more than a decade, the Smithsonian Asian Pacific American Center and WHIAANHPI have collaborated to identify a national theme for AA and NHPI Heritage Month in consultation with the White House and community partners. Previous themes such as "I Am Beyond" (2014) and "Visible Together" (2023) have been warmly embraced, both by federal agencies and community-serving organizations, and have served as catalysts for meaningful dialogue around AA and NHPI identity.

The 2024 theme is an homage to our ancestors and invites all Americans to delve into the legacies, triumphs, and challenges that have shaped AA and NHPI communities. It embodies the spirit of our collective journey – one rooted in resilience and hope – and encourages us to forge intergenerational connections to honor our past and pave a durable path forward.

The White House and WHIAANHPI will use this theme to foster discussions during our May activities, including a landmark celebration on May 13, 2024, at the Andrew W. Mellon Auditorium in Washington, DC. Train strikes in May 2024: Full list of dates and lines affected

Rail lines are set for disruption in the week following the first May bank holiday as train drivers at 16 rail companies strike on different days.

Train drivers will stage a fresh wave of strikes and overtime bans in May, causing disruption to the rail network.

The strikes are part of a long-running dispute over pay.

Members of Aslef union at 16 rail companies will walk out on different days from 7 to 9 May.

Additionally, all members will refuse to work any overtime from 6 May to 11 May.

Here is a full list of the services affected by strikes and when.

Rail strike dates

Tuesday 7 May

Strikes will affect c2c, Greater Anglia, GTR Great Northern Thameslink, Southeastern, Southern, Gatwick Express and South Western Railway.

Wednesday 8 May

Strikes will affect Avanti West Coast, Chiltern Railways, CrossCountry, East Midlands Railway, Great Western Railway and West Midlands Trains.

Thursday 9 May

Strikes will affect LNER, Northern Trains and TransPennine Express.

Overtime ban dates

From Monday 6 May to Saturday 11 May union members will not work overtime.

Overtime bans, an action short of a strike, means some services may not be running or may be reduced as drivers refuse to work their rest days.

People are advised to check before they travel, as some areas may have no service.

How do strikes and overtime bans affect services?

Strikes tend to mean services on lines where members are participating are extremely affected or cancelled entirely, whereas overtime bans often lead to reduced services.

Are there strikes on the Tube too?

There have been regular strikes on London Underground too recently, and while there aren't any planned walkouts for drivers, customer service managers are set to walk out on Friday 26 April in a dispute over terms and conditions.

There will also be an overtime ban for the customer service managers on the following days:

The Transport Salaried Staffs' Association (TSSA) says the action by its members is likely to cause Tube stations to close at the last minute, including on the Saturday following the strike (27 April), while TfL has said on its website "some stations may need to close at short notice".

Despite the warning, a TfL spokesperson has said they aren't expecting significant disruption.

This action follows strike action taken by the same workers on 10 April, which the TSSA said had a "real impact" with "many stations shut at short notice".

They say they are "extremely concerned" about TfL's 'Stations Changes' proposals.

"We have made it clear that our union will not accept the continued threats to our members' roles, locations, terms, and conditions to stand unchallenged," a TSSA spokesperson said.

"We will continue to take sustained action until London Underground is prepared to negotiate with us in good faith."

Commenting on the impending strikes, a TfL spokesperson said: "We are disappointed that TSSA is continuing with this strike action following a consultation process.

"While we don't expect this action will cause significant disruption, we urge TSSA to continue to work with us to help find a resolution.

"There are no planned job losses as part of these vital changes which will improve the service we provide to customers at our stations."

Why are the strikes still happening?

Aslef rejected a two-year offer of 4% in 2022 and another 4% this year, saying it is way below inflation, and is linked to changes in terms and conditions.

Aslef said train drivers have not had an increase in salary for five years, since their last pay deals expired in 2019.

The union said after its members voted overwhelmingly in February to continue taking industrial action, it asked the train operating companies to hold talks.

General secretary Mick Whelan said the year-old pay offer of 4% and another 4% was "dead in the water".

Coming to Alabama: Newsom’s Abortion-Access Ad, Depicting an Arrest

A woman nervously peers into her rearview mirror as a patrolman activates his car’s lights and sirens. She is less than a mile from leaving Alabama to seek abortion services, but it’s too late: The next thing she knows, she is being handed a pregnancy test and is handcuffed.

The encounter is depicted in an unvarnished new television ad called “Fugitive.” The Campaign for Democracy, a political action committee created by Gov. Gavin Newsom, Democrat of California, produced the ad.

It will appear on Monday in Alabama, where Republicans have called for prosecuting women who travel elsewhere for an abortion. The state’s abortion ban, one of the nation’s strictest, outlaws the procedure at all stages of pregnancy, with no exceptions for rape and incest.

“Trump Republicans want to criminalize young Alabama women who travel for reproductive care,” the ad’s narrator says.

The ad then shows the patrolman approaching the vehicle: “Miss, I’m going to need you to step out of the vehicle,” he says, tapping the kit on the driver’s side door, “take a pregnancy test.”

The ad is scheduled to run on broadcast and cable television, along with digital platforms like YouTube, for two weeks, according to the PAC. The cost of the ad buy was not immediately available.

Alabama’s attorney general, Steve Marshall, a Republican, has clashed with the Justice Department and abortion assistance providers over whether the state has the authority to prosecute individuals or groups that help women leave the state to have the procedure.

Last month, Republicans introduced a bill in the Alabama House that would make it a misdemeanor to harbor or transport a minor to seek abortion services.

Mr. Newsom has emerged as a key surrogate for President Biden while harboring future White House ambitions of his own. He has regularly skirmished with G.O.P. governors and Republican-led states over abortion access, immigration, crime and other issues.

While Republicans have seized on crossings at the southern border in their messaging, Democrats have harnessed the issue of abortion-access after the U.S. Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade in 2022. It helped propel Democratic candidates to key victories during the midterm elections in 2022 and in races last year.

In February, the Alabama Supreme Court ruled that frozen embryos were people with rights, casting a cloud of uncertainty over in vitro fertilization. The state later passed a law giving I.V.F. clinics criminal and civil immunity, but it did not address whether embryos have the legal status of human beings.

In another seismic ruling, the Arizona Supreme Court this month upheld an 1864 law that bans nearly all abortions. The decision could have far-reaching consequences for women’s health care and election-year politics in the state, a critical political battleground.

Mr. Newsom said in a social media post at the time that California, which borders Arizona, would provide a refuge for women affected by the decision.

“Arizona wasn’t even a state — it was a territory — when this draconian abortion ban was passed,” he said. “That’s how extreme this is. California remains ready to help Arizonans access reproductive health care.”
