Etihad Airways posts ninefold increase in first-quarter profits as travel demand soars

Etihad Airways recorded an almost ninefold increase in first-quarter profits, as the airline continues to expand its route network and carry more passengers amid soaring demand for air travel.

The Abu Dhabi airline posted after-tax profits of Dh526 million ($143 million) for the first three months of 2024, up from Dh59 million in the same period a year ago. It cited higher passenger revenue and lower financing costs for the increase.

Total revenue rose about 21 per cent year-on-year to Dh5.7 billion in the first quarter, driven mainly by a 25 per cent increase in passenger revenue.

Passenger traffic grew 41 per cent year-on-year to 4.2 million as Etihad Airways expanded its network to destinations including Thiruvananthapuram, Kozhikode and Boston.

Passenger load factor – a measure of how well an airline fills available seats – remained unchanged at 86 per cent during the three months.

First-quarter revenues are “equivalent to our total net income for the entire financial year 2023 as we continue our margin expansion journey”, said Etihad Airways' chief executive Antonoaldo Neves.

“This significant profit increase was achieved even with the holy month of Ramadan starting in early March this year, compared to late March last year, demonstrating the adaptability of our business.”

The airline usually announces half-yearly or annual operating gross. The quarterly earnings announcement comes after Etihad in March said it was preparing for a potential listing – a first for a major Gulf airline – as it pursues an ambitious growth strategy between now and 2030.

However, any decision about a possible listing would be made by the airline's owner, Abu Dhabi holding company ADQ, Etihad said at the time.

The airline is making “a lot of progress” in its management and transparency, which includes releasing quarterly earnings, Mr Neves told The National on Thursday.

“The shareholder mandate is very clear to us: Improve the service and have a sustainable company that is profitable,” he said.

“The mandate is to deliver an extraordinary customer experience and have a company that is self-funded and viable financially and economically speaking.”

A strong network, operational efficiencies, cost efficiencies and an “agile” team will enable the airline to deliver sustainable results, he said.

Etihad Airways said its cost per available seat kilometre (CASK) and CASK excluding fuel costs dropped by 9 per cent and 11 per cent in the first quarter.

Investor demand

Mr Neves, who led Brazilian airline Azul through an initial public offering in 2017, said that investors typically look into an airline's margin expansion for value creation.

“When investors look for an asset, they are concerned about future profitability and if you have a strategy that provides you with differentiation and you have a proven track record in delivering results … then that helps in the IPO story as well,” he said.

“When I did the Azul IPO, Azul had just become profitable. So the investors were buying the margin expansion story. Because if you buy only into the profitability, there's no value creation left.”

The Etihad boss said that any future IPO decision is up to the airline's shareholders and that his focus is devoted to margin expansion, growth and enhancing customer service.

The outlook

Looking ahead into the rest of the year, the outlook for summer travel is bright with “very strong” forward bookings for travel in June, Mr Neves said.

In March, Etihad Airways said it expects to exceed last year's annual profit of Dh525 million, in 2024.

Etihad’s operating fleet grew to 89 aircraft in the first quarter, from 75 in the previous year, including the addition of three new Boeing 787s in February this year. The airline's capacity in terms of available seat kilometres (ASKs) increased by 35 per cent year-on-year.

Following successful trials, Etihad Airways has expanded IATA’s digital health passport on flights between Abu Dhabi and seven destinations across its network.

The IATA Travel Pass is available for guests on all Etihad flights between Abu Dhabi and Bangkok, Barcelona, Geneva, Madrid, Milan, New York and Singapore and offers the convenience of a one-stop platform for managing COVID-19 documentation.

Mohammad Al Bulooki, Chief Operating Officer at Etihad Aviation Group, said: “The feedback from the IATA Travel Pass trial has been positive, with Etihad’s guests appreciating its ease-of-use and data security. Etihad is pleased to now make IATA Travel Pass available on flights to and from seven major global cities, providing more guests with the option of simplifying their journey and airport experience.”

Nick Careen, IATA’s Senior Vice President for Operations, Safety and Security, said: “Etihad’s decision to expand IATA Travel Pass based on positive customer feedback is a strong endorsement of the solution. IATA Travel pass was designed to provide a one-stop-shop solution for travellers to safely and efficiently manage their COVID-19 documentation and generate an ‘OK to Travel’ which airlines can trust. It’s great to see the app in use facilitating the restart of international travel.”

Etihad Airways was one of the first airlines globally to begin testing IATA Travel Pass in April 2021 in support of a global, standardised solution for travellers to validate their documents and navigate COVID-19 travel requirements.

To access the IATA Travel Pass, passengers need to download the IATA Travel Pass app for Android or iOS, where they can add their Etihad Airways travel itinerary, view their travel requirements and securely share their PCR test results.

The IATA Travel Pass app also includes functionality to upload vaccination certificates, opening up opportunities for travel where vaccination is a requirement. Currently the app is able to accept EU Digital Covid Certificates issued by all 27 member states of the European Union plus Switzerland, Iceland, Norway, and Lichtenstein as well as vaccine certificates from Singapore and Qatar. As vaccines continue to roll out globally, more and more travellers around the world will be able to upload their government issued COVID-19 vaccine certificates to facilitate seamless travel.

The airline is continuing to work closely with IATA to progressively roll out the digital travel pass to more cities across its route network.

Excruciatingly painful app and painful call center process

First up, the app is terrible. There have been numerous instances/excuses/updates in the past and the end user experience is poor. Just one example - I can’t even see the details of a previous booking, as it assumed I’m going to manage the booking. Try buying a ticket with miles on the app - Etihad seems to do everything it can to DISCOURAGE easy redemption of miles, and the website is no better. And the worst is having to call the call center for which YOU get charged because Etihad hasn’t made a proper app. And to top it all, it doesn’t seem that they care about feedback, either here, or in general. Not mention the Profiling at the airport by their staff - and if Etihad really takes things seriously, someone will contact me.

Don’t recommend at all, save your money and time

Etihad canceled flights everyday saying they had technical problems, every day, every international flight. 4 different family members expressed same concern, being stranded in different cities or at airport from hours to 2-4 days sometimes. Also during these times, as I personally experienced that Etihad did not even provide water or a snack to stranded travelers whose flights they canceled without notice at last minute. The very few that got hotel booked due to days of delay we’re left without any information on when they will be reached, when will next flight be available. When they did reschedule, randomly people were assigned to fly to different destinations far off and waste 1-2 days going in loop to get to original destination. People who were needing medication suffered. People traveling due to emergency were not given any ear, nor prioritized, and left at customer service reply which didn’t help. Save money, time and agony. DON’T travel with Etihad.

Not user friendly app.

It’s always been terrible but at least in the past I was able to do few things such as choosing my seat, since most my travel 14 hours flights and I need the extra leg room, and unfortunately since I been loyal customer for Etihad with gold status since 2011, yet never ever got any complimentary upgrade therefore it’s very important for me to choose my seat, with the new update I can’t do that either. As per the email sent to most frequent flyers there is new updates that is more benefits and friendly, not true at all same benefits nothing new, and the app is worst than before. You would think someone in Etihad will read all these comments and do something about it? Guess again, no one care in Etihad.

UAE rains: Emirates, flydubai, Etihad Airways, Air Arabia announce flight cancellations, delays

UAE carriers issued a advisory urging passengers to arrive early at the airport

Stock-Dubai-Airports

Dubai: Adverse weather conditions across the UAE are impacting flights to and from Dubai, resulting in delays, diversions, and cancellations on May 2. Flights operated by UAE carriers Emirates, Etihad Airways, flydubai, and Air Arabia were impacted by the adverse weather conditions, resulting in delays, cancellations, and diversions.

Dubai's flagship carrier Emirates has cancelled flights to several destinations including Istanbul, Nairobi, Cairo, Amman, Singapore and Johannesburg.

“Due to bad weather in Dubai on 2 May, flight movements at Dubai Airport have been reduced. Customers arriving or departing from Dubai airport on 2 May can expect some delays as flights are rescheduled,” an Emirates spokesperson said.

The following Emirates flights stand cancelled on May 2

EK 123/124 – between Dubai and Istanbul

EK 763/764 – between Dubai and Johannesburg

EK 719/720 – between Dubai and Nairobi

Ek 921/922 – between Dubai and Cairo

EK 903/904 – between Dubai and Amman

EK 352/353 – between Dubai and Singapore (EK353 departing 3 May, 0050hrs)

Emirates apologized for any inconvenience and said affected passengers will be rebooked at a later late. "To rebook, contact your travel agent or nearest Emirates Office. All rebooking fees will be waived," said the spokesperson.

On Wednesday, Emirates issued a travel advisory urging passengers flying on Thursday to arrive early at the airport due to anticipated road delays.

Emirates' sister concern flydubai was also forced to delay and cancel several departures from its home base in Dubai International. Arrivals were also impacted. Inbound flydubai flights from Saudi Arabia, Oman, Iran, Pakistan, Bahrain, and Israel were delayed, according to status updates on DXB's website. Depratures to India, Damascus, and Iran were also delayed.

“The adverse weather conditions in Dubai on May 2 have caused some delays to our operations. Passengers are advised to allow extra time for their journey to Dubai International (DXB) whether they are travelling by car or public transport,” said a flydubai spokesperson.

Etihad Airways

UAE's flag carrier Etihad Airways' travel advisory advised passengers to arrive early at Zayed International Airport. "If you're traveling to Zayed International Airport, please allow extra time in case of delays and plan your journey accordingly," an airline spokesperson said.

Passengers using the Etihad bus service between Zayed International Airport and Dubai are encouraged to check in early for their transfer to allow additional time to reach the airport.

Sharjah-based carrier Air Arabia has also advised passengers to plan extra time for travel to its hubs in Abu Dhabi, Sharjah and Ras Al Khaimah. The airline shared on social media platform X, "Update your contact info in your booking to receive the latest flight updates."

Meanwhile, India's largest airline Indigo announced that flight operations are affected due to bad weather in Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Sharjah and Ras Al Khaimah. SpiceJet and Vistara airlines also issued similar alerts.

Etihad Airways reports record profit after tax of AED 526 million in first quarter results

Etihad Airways reports record profit after tax of AED 526 million in first quarter results

  • Profit after tax surged to AED 526 million (U.S.$ 143 million) in Q1 2024, up from AED 59 million (U.S.$ 16 million) in Q1 2023, driven by robust passenger revenue
  • 4.2 million passengers carried over the quarter, marking a 41 per cent increase over the same period last year
  • Operational efficiency showed significant improvement year-on-year, with Cost per Available Seat Kilometre (CASK) and CASK ex-fuel reduced by 9 per cent and 11 per cent, respectively

Abu Dhabi, UAE — Etihad Airways today announced its Q1 2024 results, recording a profit after tax of AED 526 million (U.S.$ 143 million), a significant improvement over Q1 2023, marking a solid start for the 2024 financial year.

Total revenue increased by AED 987 million (U.S.$ 269 million), from AED 4,752 million (U.S.$ 1,294 million) in Q1 2023 to AED 5,739 million (U.S.$ 1,563 million) in Q1 2024, reflecting an increase in network capacity and passenger numbers.

The airline carried 4.2 million passengers over the quarter, up 41 per cent year-on-year. The average passenger load factor stands at 86 per cent for Q1 2024 and remains unchanged compared to the first quarter of last year. Revenue from cargo and other sources remained broadly stable over the same period.

The airline continues to improve its operational efficiency with decreasing unit cost from the same quarter last year (CASK and CASK ex-fuel reduced by 9 per cent and 11 per cent, respectively).

Antonoaldo Neves, Chief Executive Officer of Etihad Airways, said: “We are pleased to report a strong start to the financial year 2024, with our first quarter earnings equivalent to our total net income for the entire financial year 2023 as we continue our margin expansion journey. We have maintained our resilience and our focus on customer service and growth while continuing to improve our commitment to efficiency.

“This significant profit increase was achieved even with the holy month of Ramadan starting in early March this year, compared to late March last year, demonstrating the adaptability of our business.

“Our plans are set to expand our network and enhance our offerings while connecting an ever-greater number of people to and via Abu Dhabi. I would like to extend my deepest thanks to all our employees whose hard work and dedication have been crucial in achieving these results.”

During this period, Etihad optimised its network by enhancing routes and increasing frequencies to key destinations. The airline also launched new flights to Thiruvananthapuram, Kozhikode, and Boston, and announced additional routes to Antalya and Jaipur. The additional capacity has led to a 34 per cent increase in Etihad's total weekly flights for the upcoming peak summer period, growing from 642 last year to 858 in 2024.

The airline has continued to play a pivotal role in supporting Abu Dhabi's tourism sector, driving a 43 per cent increase in inbound point-to-point traffic compared to the first quarter of 2023.

In its first quarter operating from its new terminal at Zayed International Airport, the airline has seen significant improvements in customer satisfaction, driven by enhanced efficiencies across all passenger touchpoints. Upgraded lounge facilities now offer more comfort and exclusive services, enhancing the overall travel experience. Additionally, streamlined check-in processes and smoother transfers have contributed positively to customer feedback.

Key Q1 2024 highlights a glance:

  • Total revenue growth: total revenue has increased primarily due to a significant boost in passenger revenue, which rose by AED 966 million (U.S.$ 263 million), a 25 per cent increase from the previous year.
  • Cargo revenue: revenue from cargo has maintained its robust level year-on-year, supported by expanding partnerships such as its strategic agreement with SF Airlines to link global hubs, extending Etihad's network in Asia.
  • Costs: improved operational efficiency, with CASK and CASK ex-fuel decreased by 9 per cent and 11 per cent respectively.
  • Profit after tax: the strong surge in passenger revenue, combined with reduced net finance costs, drove the increase in profit after tax for the first quarter of 2024 to AED 526 million (U.S.$ 143 million), compared to AED 59 million (U.S $ 16 million) in the corresponding period in 2023.
  • Capacity growth: the first quarter of 2024 saw an expansion in capacity, as evidenced by substantial growth in Available Seat Kilometres (ASK) and passenger numbers, increasing by 35 per cent and 41 per cent respectively compared to the same period in 2023.
  • Operating fleet: Etihad’s operating fleet grew from 75 to 89 aircraft over the same quarter last year, including the incorporation of three new 787s in February 2024.
