Many travel insurance plans contain exclusions for adventure sports activities. If you plan to ski, bungee jump, windsurf or parasail, this might be a plan to consider.

Note that the Standard plan ($72 for our sample trip), while the most affordable, provides less coverage than other plans. But it can be a good choice for travelers who are satisfied with trip cancellation and interruption coverage of $2,500 or less, do not need rental car damage protection, find the limits to be sufficient and do not need coverage for certain more adventurous activities.

For starters, basic coverage from Travelex Insurance Services came in at $125, almost exactly average for our sample trip.

While the company does offer comprehensive plans that include medical benefits, you can also choose between cheaper plans that don’t provide cancellation coverage but do offer protections during your travels.

The basic coverage plan for our trip to Mexico costs $124 — right around the average.

While some travel insurance companies offer just a handful of plans, with IMG, you’ll really have your pick. Though this requires a bit more research, it allows you to search for coverage that fits your travel needs.

However, travelers will want to be aware that IMG’s iTravelInsured Travel Lite is expensive. Coming in at $149.85, it’s the costliest plan on our list.

Tin Leg’s Basic plan came in at $134 for our sample trip, adding about $8 onto the average basic policy cost. Note that you’ll pay a lot more if you shop for the most comprehensive coverage, and there are eight plans to choose from for trips abroad.

The multitude of plans can help you find coverage that fits your needs, but with so many to choose from, deciding can be daunting.

The only real way to figure out your ideal plan is to compare them all, look at the plan details and decide which features and coverage suit you and your travel style best.

As you shop for travel insurance, you’ll find many of the same coverage categories across numerous plans.

Trip cancellation

This covers the prepaid costs you make for your trip in cases when you need to cancel for a covered reason. This coverage helps you recoup upfront costs paid for flights and nonrefundable hotel reservations.

Trip interruption

Trip interruption benefits generally involve disruptions after you depart. It helps reimburse costs incurred for flight delays, cancellations and plenty of other covered disruptions you might encounter during your travels.

This coverage can cover the costs for you to return home or reimburse unexpected expenses like an extra hotel stay, meals and ground transportation.

Trip delay coverage helps cover unexpected costs when your trip is delayed. This is another coverage that helps offset the costs of flight trouble or other travel disruptions.

Note that many policies have a total amount a traveler can claim, with caps on per diem benefits, too.

Cancel For Any Reason

Cancel For Any Reason coverage allows you to recoup some of the upfront costs you paid for a trip even if you’re canceling for a reason not otherwise covered by your standard travel insurance policy.

Typically, adding this protection to your plan costs extra.

Baggage delay

This coverage helps cover the costs of essential items you might need when your luggage is delayed. Think toiletries, clothing and other immediate items you might need if your luggage didn’t make it on your flight.

Many travel insurance plans with baggage delay protection will specify how long (six, 12, 24 hours, etc.) your luggage must be delayed before you can make a claim.

Lost baggage

Used for travelers whose luggage is lost or stolen, this helps recoup the lost value of the items in your bag.

You’ll want to make sure you closely follow the correct procedures for your plan. Many plans include a maximum total amount you can claim under this coverage and a per-item cap.

Travel medical insurance

This covers out-of-pocket medical costs when travelers run into an emergency.

Because many travelers’ health insurance plans don’t cover medical care overseas, travel medical insurance can help offset out-of-pocket health care costs.

In addition to emergency medical coverage, many plans have medical evacuation or repatriation coverage for costs incurred when you must be taken to a hospital or return to your home country because of a medical situation.

Most travel insurance plans cover many trip protections that can help you be prepared for unexpected travel disruptions and expenses.

These coverages are generally aimed at protecting the money you put into your trip, expenses you incur because of travel trouble and costs incurred if you have a medical emergency overseas.

On top of core coverages like trip cancellation and interruption and travel medical coverage, some plans offer add-on options like waivers for pre-existing conditions, rental car collision damage waivers or adventure sports riders. These usually cost extra or must be added within a specified timeframe.

Typical travel insurance policies offer coverage for many unforeseen events, but as you research to select a plan, consider your needs. Though every plan differs, there are some commonly excluded coverages.

For instance, you typically can’t get coverage for a named storm if you bought the coverage after the storm was named. In other words, if you have a trip to the Caribbean booked for Sept. 25 and on Sept. 20 a hurricane develops and is named, you generally won’t be able to buy a travel insurance plan Sept. 21 in hopes of getting your money back.

Many plans also don’t cover activities performed under the influence of drugs or alcohol or any extreme sports. If the latter applies to you, you might want to consider a plan with specific coverages for adventure-seekers.

For numerous plans, a few other situations don’t qualify as an acceptable reason to cancel and make a claim, such as fear of travel, medical tourism or pregnancies (unless you booked a trip and bought insurance before you became pregnant or there are complications with the pregnancy). This is where a Cancel For Any Reason add-on to your coverage can be helpful.

You can also run into trouble if you give up on a trip too soon: a minor (or even multihour) flight delay likely isn’t sufficient to cancel your entire trip and get reimbursed through your plan. Be sure to review what requirements your specific plan has when it comes to canceling a trip, claiming trip interruption, etc.

Travel insurance costs vary widely. The final price of your plan will fluctuate based on your age, length of trip and destination.

It will also depend on how much coverage you need, whether you add on specialized policies (like Cancel For Any Reason or pre-existing conditions coverage), whether you plan to participate in extreme sports and other factors.

In our examples above, for instance, the 35-year-old traveler taking a $2,000 trip to Italy would have spent an average $76 for a basic plan to get coverage for things like trip cancellation and interruption, baggage protection, etc. That’s a little less than 4% of the total trip cost — lower than average.

If there were multiple members in a traveling party or if they were going on, say, a rock-climbing or bungee-jumping excursion, the costs would go up.

On average, travel insurance comes to about 5% to 10% of the trip cost. However, considering many of the plans reimburse up to 100% of the trip cost (or more) for disruptions like trip cancellation or interruption, it can be a worthwhile expense if something goes wrong.

It depends. Consider the following factors that might affect your decision: You’re young and healthy, all your bookings are refundable or cancelable without a penalty, your flights are nonstop, you’re not checking bags and a credit card you carry offers some travel protections . In that case, travel insurance might not be necessary.

On the other hand, if you prepaid a large chunk of money for a nonrefundable African safari, you’re going on a Caribbean cruise in the middle of a hurricane season or you’re going somewhere where the cost of health care is high, it’s not a bad idea to buy a travel insurance plan. Here’s how to find the best travel insurance coverage for you.

If you’re thinking of booking a trip and not planning to buy travel insurance, you may want to consider at least booking refundable airfare and not prepaying for hotel, rental car and activity reservations. That way, if something goes wrong, you can cancel without losing any money.

Selecting the best travel insurance policy comes down to your needs, concerns, preferences and budget.

As you book, take a few minutes to consider what most concerns you. Is it getting stranded because of flight trouble? Having the ability to cancel for any reason you see fit without losing money? Getting sick or injured right before departure and needing to postpone the trip? Injuring yourself or falling ill while overseas?

Ultimately, you want a plan that protects you, your money and the large investment in your trip — but doesn’t cost too much, either.

Medical coverage. If your priority is having adequate medical coverage abroad, you might want to look for plans with high limits for medical emergencies and medical evacuation.

Complex travel itinerary. If your itinerary has lots of flight connections, prepaid hotels and deposits for activities you can’t get back, prioritizing a plan with the best coverage for trip cancellations or interruptions may land at the top of your list.

Travel uncertainty. If you’re on the fence about a trip and have nonrefundable reservations, you may want to select a plan with a Cancel For Any Reason coverage option, which can help you recoup about 50% to 75% of the costs. This helps provide peace of mind, placing the decision on whether to travel entirely in your hands.

Car rentals. If you’re renting a car, a collision damage waiver is often worth looking into.

We used the following factors to choose insurance providers to highlight:

Breadth of coverage: We looked at how many plans each company offered plus the range of their standard plans. 

Depth of coverage: We considered two data points to get a sense of how much each company pays out for common travel issues — the maximum caps for trip cancellation and trip interruption claims.

Cost: By looking at the costs for basic coverage across multiple companies, we determined an average cost for shoppers to benchmark plan prices against.

Customizability: While standard plans can cover a lot of ground, sometimes you need something a little more personal.

Customer satisfaction. Using data from Squaremouth when available, and Google Reviews as a backup, we can give kudos to companies with better track records from their clients.

No, it doesn’t necessarily get more expensive the longer you wait to purchase. However, as you put off buying insurance, you may lose access to potential plans and coverage options.

In general, buying travel insurance within a few days to two weeks of prepaying or making an initial deposit for your trip is your best bet. Assuming you’re not booking last-minute, this will provide you with access to the widest possible range of coverage options. It also helps prevent any medical conditions or storms that pop up between booking and buying a plan from ending up as excluded situations, which won’t be covered by your plan.

But, generally, many plans do allow you to buy coverage quite close to your departure date.

To get the most out of your travel insurance plan, buy it soon after making your initial prepayment or deposit to ensure you have access to the biggest menu of plans possible.

Select a plan that’s comprehensive enough to cover the travel scenarios you’re most concerned about or likely to encounter but not too expensive or laden with protections you’d never likely need.

Whatever your coverage, thoroughly review the plan so you understand what’s covered and what’s not, plus how to adhere to the plan’s rules for making a claim.

Travelers frequently use phrases like “trip insurance” and “travel insurance,” as well as “trip protection,” interchangeably, but they do mean different things, according to Stan Sandberg, founder of insurance comparison site TravelInsurance.com.

Trip insurance, or trip protection, generally refers to predeparture (or preevent) coverage if you need to cancel. You may see these plans sold by airlines, online travel agencies or even ticketed event sellers.

“You could refer to it as the portion that protects the investment in the trip,” Sandberg says.

A travel insurance plan typically includes that — plus more comprehensive benefits to protect you during your trip, from medical coverage to trip delay and lost baggage protections, and many more elements, depending on the plan.

Though travel insurance is typically not required for international trips, your personal circumstances will play a key role in whether it’s a good investment.

For instance, young, healthy travelers with few prepaid trip expenses embarking on a relatively risk-free trip may not see a need to buy a plan.

Older travelers with complicated itineraries who are visiting destinations where they could potentially fall ill or get injured — or who could encounter bad weather or some other disrupting factor along the way — may want to buy coverage.

Consider a few key questions:

How well would your health insurance plan cover you if you needed to visit a hospital overseas?

How much did you prepay for a hotel or rental car?

How much money would you be out if weather or some other flight issue derailed your itinerary?

Could you afford an unexpected night in a city where you have a connecting flight?

Do you already have a credit card that provides some travel protections?

EVA Airways, "EVA" stands for Evergreen Airways, is a Taiwanese international airline based at Taoyuan International Airport near Taipei, Taiwan, operating passenger and dedicated cargo services to over 40 international destinations in Asia, Australia, Europe, and North America.

Travel insurance is not offered to US customers booking flights on EVA Air from the US. That’s good news – we can shop the open marketplace for travel insurance and find great options instead.

Our Sample Trip – Los Angeles to Bangkok, Thailand

For our sample trip, we booked a trip from Los Angeles to Bangkok, Thailand from December 9 – December 30 for two travelers.

The EVA Air website is easy to navigate, and after choosing our travel dates, number of travelers and fare category, the site displays the available flights, fare categories and pricing:

There weren’t many fare options for our departure date, so we settled for Economy.

When choosing the fare, the details of that fare, including mileage earned, penalty fees and change fees are shown:

After choosing our return flight and fare (also Economy) as well as seats, our total trip cost for both travelers came to $4,816.65, which included taxes, surcharges, and fees.

Now let’s see what we can find for travel insurance in the open marketplace through CruiseInsurance101 .

CruiseInsurance101 – The Travel Insurance Marketplace

Inputting our trip details into the quoting system at CruiseInsurance101, we’re presented with 27 options to choose from.

With so many options, what would be the best policy to choose?

CruiseInsurance101 recommends having a minimum of $100,000 of medical coverage and $500,000 of medical evacuation coverage for travel to Asia and points beyond.

The least expensive plan with adequate medical coverage is the Trawick First Class for $273.28 which is the total cost for both travelers combined.

The policy provides $150,000 of medical coverage and $1 million of medical evacuation coverage as well as trip cancellation, trip interruption, and baggage coverage. If we need to cancel prior to departure for a reason listed in the policy, such as illness or injury, we will receive a 100% refund of our trip costs.

But what if we want maximum flexibility to cancel for ANY reason? Do we have any options?

The answer is YES! A Cancel For Any Reason (CFAR) policy will provide maximum cancellation flexibility.

Cancel For Any Reason (CFAR) Policies

For maximum cancellation flexibility, a Cancel for Any Reason  (CFAR) policy is a great option.

This is a super-powerful benefit that does exactly what it says. A traveler needs to have no reason at all to cancel and still receive a significant refund. The policies that we have can provide either a 50% or a 75% refund depending on the policy chosen.

Looking at our quote from CruiseInsurance101, the least expensive CFAR policy with adequate coverage is the Trawick First Class (CFAR 75%). This policy provides the same benefits we saw above but adds the Cancel For Any Reason benefit as well if we purchase the policy within 10 days of the initial trip payment or deposit date. Total cost for both travelers combined is $464.58.

If we had to cancel for a listed reason in the policy such as an illness, we’d receive 100% of the non-refundable trip cost. However, if we cancel for a reason NOT listed in the policy, such as simply deciding we don’t want to go, the policy will refund us 75% of the trip cost.

EVA Air has a fairly generous baggage allowance, but don’t get caught out on overweight checked baggage — this is charged by piece for flights to/from the U.S., so the opportunity isn’t there to pay for just a few extra pounds.

Lap Infant Carry-on Policy

• When traveling with a lap infant, you are allowed to bring 1 carrying basket, collapsible stroller , or car seat in addition to the standard carry-on allowance. Infant necessity items such as food and feeding bottles can be brought on board to the maximum allowance of 11 pounds (5 kg).

Stroller Gate Check Policy

• Large strollers will be accepted as checked baggage only. For weight allowances, review the table below for checked baggage allowances as this depends on the destination.

• EVA Air launched the world's first premium economy seating in 1992, offering extra legroom and comfort.
• The premium economy class was initially named "Evergreen Class" but was later rebranded as premium economy.
• EVA Air's Boeing 777-300ERs feature premium economy seats, offering entertainment and upscale meals.

While many airlines offer premium class seating today, the idea of offering a class of seating somewhere in between economy class and business class came about in the early 1990s. Before that, most airliners were configured with two cabins, first and economy.

The forerunner to what would become a premium economy was called the "business class" by British Caledonian, who offered spacious seats and better meals on flights between London and New York in 1978.

In December 1992, after receiving its first Boeing 747-400 from the Seattle planemaker, EVA Air became the world's first airline to offer premium economy seating.

The first premium economy flights were between Taipei and Los Angeles

The first flights with aircraft configured with a premium economy class were between Taipei-Taoyuan International Airport (TPE) and Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) in the United States. A year later, in 1993, EVA Air began offering premium economy seats on flights from Taipei-Taoyuan International Airport (TPE) to the following destinations:

• Seattle–Tacoma International Airport (SEA) in Washington State
• John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) in New York
• Bangkok Don Mueang Airport (BKK) in Thailand
• Vienna International Airport (VIE) in Austria

Initially called "Evergreen Class," EVA Air changed the name to premium economy, and just like the way business class evolved, other airlines soon followed. The idea was that people who could not afford business class fares might be willing to pay a little extra for a seat with more legroom on long-haul flights.

EVA Air premium economy

Sadly, flying on an EVA Air premium economy ticket does not come with lounge access or priority boarding. The first passengers to board are EVA Air Royal Laurel Class, followed by EVA Air Premium Laurel Class. Because EVA Air boards its economy class passengers from the rear of the aircraft, many regular economy passengers board before premium economy passengers. On its Boeing 777-300ERs, EVA Air has 56 seats in a 2-4-2 configuration.

The seats in premium economy are plush and spacious, with plenty of legroom. Each premium economy seat has ample legroom and is 19.5 inches wide with a pitch of 38 inches. The seats feature an 11-inch LED touchscreen and an extensive library of television shows and movies. To help ensure a high-quality inflight entertainment experience, all premium economy passengers are provided with noise-canceling headphones.

Amenity kit

Bringing a touch of business class to the premium economy offering, EVA Air gives passengers an overnight amenity kit that contains moisturizing cream and lip balm, a toothbrush, toothpaste, socks, a comb, earplugs, and a sleep mask. Premium economy passengers are also given a fluffy pillow and a warm blanket.

All EVA Air premium economy passengers are offered 30 minutes of complimentary browsing and can then pay $4.95 for 30MB or $14.95 for 100MB, $29.95 for 300MB, and $39.95 for unlimited use.

Using the EVA Air App, you can select your inflight meals up to two weeks before your flight. EVA Air uses Michelin-star chefs to create unique seasonal meals served with selected red/white and sparkling wines for its menus. With EVA Air being a Taiwanese airline, all meals onboard tend to be influenced by Chinese cuisine, but there are Western options available.

A sample meal in EVA Air premium economy

• Appetizer: Smoked duck breast with mango salsa and papaya salad.
• Main course: Stir-fry prawn noodles with a spicy chili sauce.
• Desert: Fruits and a citrus-flavored cheesecake.
• Beer and non-alcoholic drinks are also available.

EVA Air also serves breakfasts on its overnight long-haul flights.

All about EVA Air

In the late 1980s, the chairman of the Taiwanese container transportation and shipping company, the Evergreen Marine Corporation, Chang Yung-fa, announced his ambition to establish Taiwan's first privately owned international airline. In 1988, the Taiwanese government decided to liberalize the country's airline industry and allow any company with the know-how and financial backing to begin international flights from the island state.

After receiving regulatory approval, Evergreen Airways was established in March 1989. However, the name was too similar to the unrelated Evergreen International cargo airline. To avoid any confusion, Evergreen Airways changed its name to EVA Air. In October 1989, the newly formed airline ordered some of its Boeing 747-400s and McDonnell Douglas for its MD-11 tri-jet widebody airliners.

EVA Air begins Asia flights using Boeing 767s

While waiting for the new aircraft, EVA Air began operations on July 1, 1991, using a small fleet of Boeing 767-300ER aircraft configured in two classes. EVA Air's initial destinations that it flew from Taipei-Taoyuan International Airport (TPE) were:

• Seoul Incheon International Airport (ICN) in South Korea
• Soekarno–Hatta International Airport (CGK) in Jakarta, Indonesia
• Singapore Changi Airport (SIN) in Singapore
• Sultan Abdul Aziz Shah Airport (SZB) in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

By 1992, the airline had expanded to Europe, adding the Viennese capital of Vienna to its international network. After receiving its first 747-400 from Boeing in December 1992, EVA Air began flying transpacific flights from Taipei to Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) in the United States.

By 1994, EVA Air was flying to 22 international destinations from Taipei, carrying over three million passengers. After turning a profit a year earlier than expected in 1995, EVA Air began dedicated cargo flights using McDonnell Douglas MD-11 freighters between Taipei and the following airports:

• Los Angeles International Airport (LAX)
• Penang International Airport (PEN) in Malaysia
• San Francisco International Airport (SFO) in California

In 2000, EVA Air decided to overhaul its fleet of widebody long-haul aircraft and became the launch customer for the Boeing 777-300ER when it ordered four aircraft and a further eight options. In 2001, the Taiwanese airline ordered its first aircraft from European planemaker Airbus, the Airbus A330-200. The plan was to use the Boeing 777s on long-haul flights to the United States and Europe and the Airbus A330s for large-capacity flights within Asia.

By 2004, EVA Air had converted its eight Boeing triple seven options into firm orders, with its new flagship aircraft entering service in 2005. At the same time, the airline decided to completely revamp its cabins, offering fully laid flat seats in business class and upgrading its premium economy offering.

Over the coming years, EVA Air grew and became the island's second-largest airline after state-owned China Airlines. Rated as a 5-star airline by Skytrax, today EVA Air flies to 40 destinations in Asia, Australia, Europe & North America.

Moscow will become city of equal possibilities

The 24th of July in Moscow took place a meeting of the Coordinating council on disabled persons affairs. On this meeting mayor of Moscow Yuri Luzhkov announced that till the beginning of 2010 all the cultural and sport centers of the city must be adapted for the attendance of disabled persons.

2009 was proclaimed Year of equal possibilities. And till the end of it on the buildings equipped for invalids will appear corresponding signs as well as tickets in theatre and sports grounds.

The necessity of these signs will disappear as soon as the city will correspond to all requirements.

Next measure of mayor of Moscow was introduction of fines for the parking in places destined for the cars of invalids. This fine will exist together with the evacuation of the car-violator.

According to RIA “Novosti” there will be organized special walks with limiters colored in bright for wheelchair. In the city ramps will be equipped, curbs and footsteps removed where it is necessary. Also the slope for wheelchair and comfortable WC will be constructed.

All the dangerous objects such as glazed doors, fist and last steps will be colored in yellow, the color well distinguished by people with bad eyesight.

According to the program “Social integration of invalids and disabled persons” of 2007-2009 lifts in today’s houses will be reconstructed and equipped with vocal notifications of floor number. New houses will be built according to these requirements. There will be penalty for non-observance of these rules. But not all the projects are realized. Many houses where invalids live can’t be reconstructed and equipped ramps are not comfortable and exist as formality.

The problem with transport is to be resolved. Not all trolleybuses and buses are equipped with low floor. None of tramways has a special walk for wheelchair.

The program of creation of equal possibilities for invalids (more than a million in Moscow) must help invalids to feel natural in the city. This program must also raise the status of Moscow as a tourist city and make the stay in Moscow more comfortable for the disabled persons.

Riding the Metro with Lena was a real adventure and a lot of fun. In Saint Petersburg we found Anna well versed in the history of the Tsars and in the Hermitage collection. Arkady in Veliky Novgorod was a very good guide and answered all of our questions with ease. Novgorod was perhaps a long way to go for a day trip, but we did enjoy it. Vasily was a great driver to have and kept us safe with good humour and skill. We enjoyed ourselves so much, my daughter says she is already planning to return. We would both have no hesistation to recommend ExpresstoRussia to anyone we know.

Just wanted to let you know that My grandson Bruno and I couldn´t have been more pleased with our week in Moscow (6/15 - 6/21). We were absolutely enchanted with the whole experience, including getting lost a couple of times in the Metro during our free time. Although both our guides (both Eleanas) were excellent, I would particularly commend the first one (she took us to the Tatiakov, the KGB tour, and to that beautiful cemetery where so many great Russian artists, authors, composers, musicians, militarists, and politicians are buried). Her knowledge is encyclopedic; and her understanding of today´s Russia as a product of its past was, for us, truly enlightening. I will be taking another tour in Russia, with my wife, within the next two or three years. I will be in touch with you when the time comes. Do they speak English in Moscow?

As Russia’s capital city, tourists are well accommodated in Moscow. There should be English-speaking staff in restaurants, bars, hotels, shops and attractions in tourist hotspots, and there are also English-speaking tourist police. Transport services have English translations on their maps and English announcements via intercom; alternatively, order taxis from the Yandex Taxi app (Russian Uber), though it’s unlikely that your taxi driver will speak English. If you get stuck and cannot communicate, it’s fine to use Google Translate.

Is it safe to travel to Moscow?

It is no less safe to travel to Moscow than to any European city if you exercise common sense and look after your belongings. As with every city some regions can be more unsavoury than others, but no tourist attractions are located there. The traffic in Moscow is notorious, so exercise caution when crossing roads. Do not take unlicensed taxis; book in advance or take public transport, which is widespread and perfectly safe. If you encounter any problems, look for the special tourist police who can help you. When you visit Moscow , Russia, you’re seeing one of the world’s largest, and most expensive, capital cities . While there is a history of violent crime against foreign journalists and aid personnel in Russia, a trip to Moscow is usually safe for mainstream travelers. Most tourists in Moscow only face potential issues with petty crime, though terrorism is also a concern. Visitors should stick to the principal tourist areas and abide by the local security advice.

• The U.S. Department of State urges travelers to avoid travel to Russia because of COVID-19 and to "exercise increased caution due to terrorism, harassment, and the arbitrary enforcement of local laws."  
• Anyone exploring more of Russia should avoid "The North Caucasus, including Chechnya and Mount Elbrus, due to terrorism, kidnapping,   and   risk of civil unrest." Also, travelers should stay away from "Crimea due to Russia’s occupation of the Ukrainian territory   and   abuses by its occupying authorities."  
• Canada states travelers should use a high degree of caution in Russia due to the threat of terrorism and crime.  

Is Moscow Dangerous?

The Moscow city center is typically safe. In general, the closer you are to the Kremlin , the better. Travelers mainly need to be aware of their surroundings and look out for petty crime. Be especially careful in tourist areas such as Arbat Street and crowded places like the Moscow Metro transit system. The suburbs are also generally fine, though it is advised to stay away from Maryino and Perovo districts.

Terrorism has occurred in the Moscow area, leading authorities to increase security measures. Be more careful at tourist and transportation hubs, places of worship, government buildings, schools, airports, crowds, open markets, and additional tourist sites.

Pickpockets and purse snatching happen often in Russia, perpetrated by groups of children and teenagers who distract tourists to get their wallets and credit cards. Beware of people asking you for help, who then trick you into their scheme. Don’t expect a backpack to be a safe bag bet; instead, invest in something that you can clutch close to your body or purchase a money belt . Always diversify, storing some money in a separate location so that if you are pickpocketed, you'll have cash elsewhere. Keep an eye out for thieves in public transportation, underground walkways, tourist spots, restaurants, hotel rooms and homes, restaurants, and markets.

Is Moscow Safe for Solo Travelers?

Large cities like Moscow in Russia are overall fairly safe if you are traveling alone, and the Moscow Metro public transit is a secure and easy way to get around. But it is still a good idea to follow basic precautions as in any destination. Avoid exploring alone at night, especially in bad areas. You may want to learn some basic Russian phrases or bring a dictionary, as many locals don't speak English. However, in case you need any help, there are tourist police that speak English. Also, exploring with other trusted travelers and locals or on professional tours is often a good way to feel safe.

Is Moscow Safe for Female Travelers?

Catcalling and street harassment are infrequent in Moscow and the rest of Russia and females traveling alone don't usually have problems. There are plenty of police officers on the streets as well. Still, it serves to stick to Moscow's well-lit, public areas, avoid solo night walks, and use your instincts. Women frequenting bars may take receive some friendly attention. Females can wear whatever they want, but those entering Orthodox churches will be required to cover up. Though women in Russia are independent, domestic violence and other inequality issues take place regularly.

Safety Tips for LGBTQ+ Travelers

Russia is not known as a gay-friendly country. However, Moscow is one of the more welcoming cities with a blooming LGBTQ+ community and many friendly restaurants, bars, clubs, and other venues. Hate crimes in Russia have increased since the 2013 anti-gay propaganda law. Openly LGBTQ+ tourists in this conservative country may experience homophobic remarks, discrimination, or even violence, especially if traveling with a partner. Also, while women hold hands or hug publicly—whether romantically involved or not—men should avoid public displays of affection to prevent being insulted or other issues.

Safety Tips for BIPOC Travelers

Moscow  and other big cities in Russia have sizable populations of various cultures, so discrimination against BIPOC travelers is rarer than in other parts of the country where it can become dangerous. Some people living in Russia who are Black, Asian, Jewish, and from other backgrounds have experienced racial discrimination and violence. Tourists won't usually experience overt racism but may be the recipients of some stares. If anyone should bother you, be polite and resist being taunted into physically defending yourself.

Safety Tips for Travelers

Travelers should consider the following general tips when visiting:

• It's best not to drink the tap water. If you do, boil it before drinking, though showering is safe and the amount used to brush teeth is generally not harmful. Mineral water is widely drunk, especially at restaurants, and if you prefer not to have it carbonated ask for “ voda byez gaz” (water without gas).
• If you need emergency assistance in case of fire, terrorism, medical issues, or more, dial 112 in Russia for bilingual operators.
• Be judicious about taking photographs, especially of police or officials. This can potentially bring unwanted attention to yourself by members of law enforcement who won’t mind asking to see your passport. Also avoid snapping photos of official-looking buildings, such as embassies and government headquarters.
• Carry your passport in as secure a manner as possible. If you get stopped for any reason by the police, they can fine or arrest you if you don't have the document with you. Also, keep photocopies of your passport, the page on which your travel visa appears, and any other documents that relate to your stay in Russia.
• Use official taxis only and steer clear of illegal taxi companies, especially at night. Ask your hotel to call a reputable taxi company.
