Start at the top with the CN Tower

Start with the big one: the CN Tower is an architectural triumph offering spectacular views, beginning with the ride up 100+ stories in a glass-fronted elevator!

Then head right next door to the Ripley’s Aquarium of Canada and immerse yourself in a world of 20,000 aquatic animals. Pet a stingray, be mesmerized by the jellies, or soak in a live dive show daily.

Go on an adventure around Lake Ontario

A short stroll toward the lake gets you to the Waterfront  area, where you have many options for a casual lunch, including the Amsterdam Brewhouse on the Lake . After, opt for a scenic boat tour of the inner harbour and Toronto Islands. You can even do it on a Tall Ship !

Or ferry over to the car-free Toronto Islands and enjoy some cycling, walking, amusement rides, or a little stand-up paddling.

Discover a castle, dinosaurs, and mummies

Did you know Toronto has an authentic castle right in the middle of the city? Casa Loma has secret passageways to explore, elaborately decorated rooms to admire, and castle towers to climb.

For dinner, travel waaay back in time with Medieval Times Dinner & Tournament . Witness brave knights on horseback in a sword fighting and jousting tournament while feasting on a fabulous four-course meal.

Experiment at the Ontario Science Centre

Kick off your day with discovery at the Ontario Science Centre . Be awed by live science demonstrations, check out a real-life rainforest and see actual meteorites from Mars in the Planetarium. You could spend all day here!

See Canada’s largest zoo

Grab a bite at the Science Centre or wait til you get to the Toronto Zoo and have lunch with your animal friends.

With seven zoogeographic regions, such as Indo-Malaya, Africa and the Tundra Trek, you’ll want to be strategic and pick your favourites to focus on. Little ones will like Splash Island and Kids Zoo.

Go on a ghost tour in the Distillery District

Relax in the car-free charm of The Distillery Historic District this evening. Enjoy a leisurely meal and glass of wine after your busy day.

Then enjoy a post-dinner stroll on cobblestone streets amid dozens of heritage buildings housing art galleries, artisan boutiques and stylish retail spaces.

How to get around Toronto

Toronto Water Fountains

As Toronto is a super busy city that is always full of events, traffic can be a major issue in the city. If you are staying right in the core of Toronto, I always recommend using public transit.

Toronto Transit: TTC Subway, Buses, and Street Cars

In Toronto, we have the TTC Subway line which is very easy to navigate compared to other major cities as we only have 2 major lines and 2 smaller lines. The two major lines that run through the city are the Yonge-University Line and the Bloor Danforth line .

Toronto Street Cars and buses are a great way to avoid the anxiety and stress of driving in downtown Toronto. They also allow you to access many locations that are not directly located at subway stops.

Read more on the TTC website .

Go Transit buses and trains

The Go Transit System Hub is located in Union Station and allows you to connect to many neighboring cities in the Greater Toronto Area.

Read more on the Go Transit website .

This is the fastest way from Toronto Pearson Airport to downtown Toronto as the train connects the airport to Union Station (the main transit hub in Toronto). The UP Express is North America’s first dedicated air-rail transportation that takes only 25 minutes from door to door no matter the traffic or weather.

Toronto with kids: in conclusion

I hope you have enjoyed this guest post about visiting Toronto as a family and can use Erin's advice to make the most of your Toronto family vacation. Be sure to read this extensive Toronto travel guide as well to help you plan your Toronto trip!

If you're spending more time in Ontario, consider visiting the Ottawa and the Niagara Falls with your kids as well. Or take one of these great road trips from Toronto for a fun day out or weekend getaway.

The Toronto Fringe Festival

  • Copy Link copied

open-uri20140522-28643-1y0yo6y

The “fringe movement” is a worldwide network of indie theatre festivals. As the name suggests, the movement is about celebrating under-represented voices and those on the margins of the performing arts world. As a result, the shows are a result of a lottery system of producers and writers who submitted their plays. It’s a festival where anyone can put on any show, without having to pass through a jury – where theatre students can mount their first production outside of school, where emerging artists can get their big break, and where established artists can test out new work. Popular shows like da Kink in my Hair and The Drowsy Chaperone got their start at Fringe. Whether you’re watching a show (or number of shows) in the back alley behind the famed Honest Ed’s, or smaller theatres in Toronto like the Helen Gardiner Phelan Playhouse, you’ll be in for a cheap treat.

Toronto With Kids: How To Plan The Perfect Family Trip To Toronto

Thinking of visiting Toronto with kids? Our insider tips will help you plan the perfect family trip to Canada’s largest city.

Visiting Toronto with kids

The city of Toronto is one of the most exciting places to visit in Canada. The country’s largest city is teeming with family-friendly experiences, from outdoor fun to some of the world’s leading museums. So whether you’re looking for spectacular nature, historical sites, world-class sports, or shopping, visiting Toronto with children opens up a wonderful chance to explore some of Toronto’s best family-friendly experiences.

About Toronto

Table of Contents

The Gooderham Building in Toronto with kids

Toronto, Canada, is one of the unique cities in the world. With nearly half of its population born outside of Canada, Toronto is considered the most multicultural city globally.

Throughout the city, you’ll find neighborhoods that represent nearly every culture on the planet. Yet Toronto isn’t simply a melting pot of world culture. Instead, this city has a unique identity that puts it on par with many of the world’s greatest cities.

Toronto is situated on the blue shores of Lake Ontario and is one of the world’s safest metropolitan areas in all of North America. The city is just one part of the larger Greater Toronto Area, which is made up of cities that includes several municipalities, including Peel, Durham, York, and others that make up an area of nearly six million people.

So follow along as we explore the best things to do in Toronto with kids!

How To Explore Toronto With Kids

My family lives in the Greater Toronto Area. We’ve spent years exploring the city, eating at the best family-friendly restaurants in Toronto, and wandering through many of the cities often-overlooked gems.

So, whether you’re looking for the most popular things to do in Toronto for families or hoping to find some of Toronto’s kid-friendly secrets, we have everything you need to visit Toronto with children.

Climb The CN Tower

The CN Tower in Toronto with children

For decades, the CN Tower has been one of the coolest places to visit Toronto for families. At 1,815 feet tall, the tower dominates the Toronto skyline. In fact, for decades, this was the tallest freestanding structure in the world.

Ride the high-speed glass elevators to the lookout level, where you can stand on the glass floor and gaze out at the best view over the city. For those who love to live adventurously, you can even strap on a harness for the Edge Walk. This experience takes you 1,000 feet above the Toronto skyline along a 5-foot ledge with nothing between you and the ground but air. Participants need to be at least 13-years-old to participate.

You can also take in 360 The Restaurant at the CN Tower. This rotating restaurant sits above the lookout deck. Although I won’t say that it’s the best food in the city, there are few places where you’ll get a better view.

Wander The Royal Ontario Museum

Royal Ontario Museum in Toronto for families

The ROM, as locals refer to it, isn’t a stuffy museum. Instead, it’s a fascinating journey through natural history, world cultures, and geology that families will love.

While there, Wander through the Age of Dinosaurs, explore the Gallery of Biodiversity, and get hands-on with ancient Egypt. Kids will love the ROMKids experience that includes drop-in programs, family activities, and even overnight sleepovers.

Explore The Toronto Islands

A boy stand up paddleboarding at the Toronto Islands

Accessed via the Jack Layton Ferry Terminal at the base of Jarvis St. or one of the many Toronto Island water taxis that line the shores of Lake Ontario, the Toronto Islands are definitely a must-do experience in Toronto with kids.

You’ll find one of only two Blue Flag Beaches in Toronto on the island, a “haunted” lighthouse, the Centreville amusement park, and some of the most beautiful nature in Toronto.

Rent a kayak or standup paddleboard from Toronto Island SUP and take in one of the best views of the Toronto skyline. Or visit to the Gibraltar lighthouse, which was built in 1808. Be careful, though. This scenic landmark is said to be haunted by the ghost of a former lighthouse keeper.

You can check out our Toronto Islands video on YouTube right here. Don’t forget to like and subscribe. It really helps us and we sincerely appreciate all of you who do.

Discover The Ontario Science Centre

Children play at the KidSpark experience at the Ontario Science Centre

Without a doubt, the Ontario Science Centre is one of the coolest science centers in all of Canada. With hands-on exhibits from rainforests to space and everything in between, this Toronto science museum is educational family fun at its best.

Families of young kids in Toronto will love the KidSpark experience, which offers a fun and educational play space for children under 8. Visitors can also take in the spectacular IMA Dome theater that features stunning movies is ridiculously high definition surrounded by 44 speakers.

Take A Harbor Cruise On The Tall Ship Kajama

A boy raises his arms on the Tall Ship Kajama in Toronto for families

Boarding at the Toronto Waterfront near the Harbourfront Centre, the Tall Ship Kajama is one of the most relaxing ways to get those awesome Toronto skyline views.

Board a century-old triple-masted ship for a tour of the Toronto Harbour or around the Toronto Islands. The ship has an onboard bar and restaurant serving up great food (our kids really loved the soft pretzels), so you’ll have lots to munch on as you drink in the views.

Shoot Through The Hockey Hall of Fame

The Hockey Hall of Fame in Toronto with kids

Toronto is a hockey town at heart. Sure, our basketball team has been gaining popularity since they’re, you know, winning games, but the Toronto Maple Leafs have been around a lot longer!

As a celebration of that hockey heritage, Toronto is home to the Hockey Hall of Fame at the corner of Yonge St. and Front St. This iconic landmark houses hockey memorabilia dating back over a hundred years along with photos, equipment, and videos from some of the sports most important moments.

Try your hand at the hardest shot in the NHLPA Be A Player Zone or strap on some goalie gear and take an NHL-calibre shot.

Relax On The Beach

Sugar Beach in Toronto kids activities

Toronto is home to 11 swimmable public beaches spread out along the Lake Ontario shoreline if you’re a fan of sand and sunshine. However, on top of those swimmable beaches, several Toronto beaches are more designed for lounging than they are for getting wet.

For some of the best swimming in the city, head out to the Toronto Islands and visit Hanlan’s Point, Centre Island, or Woodbine Beach. For beaches on the mainland, head out to Bluffers Parks in Scarborough or Balmy Beach in the aptly named “The Beach.” Finally, Cherry Beach, on the Leslie St. Spit, is a fun place to enjoy the water for something central.

Find The Secret Passages Of Casa Loma

Casa Loma kid-friendly Toronto things to do

Yes, Toronto has a castle! If you’ve ever explored the castles of the Thousand Islands , the historic Casa Loma will feel familiar. However, this incredible property isn’t the remnant of a film set from Hollywood North. In fact, this sprawling structure was the mansion of a Canadian financier who had grand plans to live out his childhood dreams.

Unfortunately, his financial planning skills did not translate into real estate, and he was forced to abandon the project before its completion. But his loss is the city’s gain. As a result, visitors can now explore what is no doubt the most unique and luxurious property in the city. Wander the Great Hall, the Library, the Conservatory, and the Stable while your children search for the castle’s hidden doorways and rooms.

Enjoy A Picnic In A Park

Evergreen Brickworks park in Toronto with children

Toronto is full of incredible parks to explore, but there are a few that stand out above the rest. And if you’re looking for awesome kid’s activities in Toronto, these should definitely be on your list.

High Park, which runs from Bloor St. down to The Queensway, is one of the best. Not only does High Park explode with cherry blossoms during the spring, but it also houses one of the best playgrounds in all of Toronto. So if you’re visiting Toronto with kids, you won’t want to miss it.

Evergreen Brickworks is a combination farmers market, children’s playground, and trail network in east Toronto. You’ll find some great restaurants, a nature walk that is absolutely laden with turtles, and lots of great places for families to explore.

Rouge National Urban Park is the only urban National Park in Ontario. This magnificent property is accessible via public transit and includes some of the best hiking trails in the province. You can read about all of the national parks in Ontario here .

Enjoy One Of The Many Toronto Festivals

Toronto Light Festival with kids

Toronto has countless amazing festivals throughout the year that are an absolute blast for families. During the winter, you can experience the Toronto Christmas Market and the Toronto Lightfest, bringing some excitement to the short days. During the summer, there are amazing celebrations such as Caribana and Pride that bring a thrill.

And don’t forget the amazing musical events and live shows that are put on throughout the city. A trendy spot for live music is at Yonge and Dundas Square near the Eaton’s Centre. You can find the full list of Toronto events here .

Where To Eat In Toronto With Kids

Love is Love ice Cream from the Fixx Cafe in Toronto

As one of the world’s greatest ethnic melting pots, it’s no surprise that you’ll find some of the best cuisines from around the world in Toronto. In fact, if you’re looking for amazing family-friendly restaurants in Toronto, you won’t have to look far.

But it’s not just about great restaurants in Toronto with kids that will make your visit to the city unforgettable. It’s also the amazing and fun treats you can find around the city.

To start your kid-friendly food tour of Toronto, head over to St. Lawrence Market. Toronto’s oldest market has been in operation since 1803 and houses over 120 vendors selling produce, meat, fish, dairy products, and much more. But, of course, you’ll find great food vendors as well.

If your family loves BBQ, stop by Barque Smokehouse on Roncesvalles. Enjoy a taster of seasoned popcorn before a meal of smoked brisket ribs or pulled pork. I love that the kids’ menu isn’t the normal chicken nuggets and burgers. Instead, it’s just a scaled-down version of the adult menu.

For some great ice cream treats, head over to The Fixx on the waterfront. They switch up their unique sundaes to fit the exciting events happening around the city.

And if you’re up for a real laugh, head over to the Poop Cafe at Bloor and Clinton near Christie Pitts. This dessert bar serves up delicious treats with a hilarious toilet theme. I went here with my kids, and we laughed our way through more ice cream than we could finish.

Final Notes On Visiting Toronto With Kids

Toronto is a wonderful destination for family travel. And I don’t say that just because I live here. Toronto is safe, vibrant, and an amazing chance to get the jump-off to other incredible places such as Niagara Falls and Prince Edward County .

Toronto, after all, is just one small part of the province of Ontario. And Ontario is an amazing place to explore. You can find much of that on our  Ontario family travel blog .

Many of the destinations in Jordan are not stroller-friendly. I recommend parents travel with a  child carrier  rather than a stroller for anything other than urban exploring.

Family-friendly Toronto hotel

Monday 8th of May 2023

Hi, I Hope you are doing well.

We (myself 48years, my wife 39 years, 19 year son and 6 years daughter) will arrive in Toronto on 14 August 2023 and will leave for Halifax on 18 August 2023 before noon. We haven't book hotel yet as it depends on the package visit tour. We are from Bangladesh. My son is studying in St. Mary's University, Halifax, NS.

We are definitely interested to book one day (16 or 17 Aug) for the Niagara Falls tour but for the rest of the days we need to visit some other places (like CN Tower, Royal Ontario Museum, Casa Loma, Toronto Zoo, Ontario Science Centre, Nathan Phillips Square, HarbourFront Centre etc.) if you are able to arrange a package.

Please let me have your feedback to take further action.

Best regards

Kevin Wagar

Hello Amin,

This sounds like a great trip. Enjoy Halifax, it's a beautiful city and I wrote a guide about it here. As for your time in Toronto, You'll be happy to know that you can comfortably visit all of those places in just a day or two. Toronto is a very easy city to navigate and many of those spots are very close to each other.

I am not a tour guide, so I don't put together packages or guiding tours. But I'm also happy to say that all of these places can be easily visited without a guide. If you're looking for a guided tour of the city in order to make your visit easier, this is a great option.

In terms of hotels, I highly recommend the Westin Harbour Castle for great views of the waterfront or the Chelsea Hotel for easy-access to much of downtown Toronto.

family road trip toronto fringe

Directed By: Robert McQueen

He’s been “that guy from  Degrassi ”, starred in US National Tours of  Spring Awakening  and  American Idiot , played Spider-Man on Broadway in  Spider-Man: Turn Off The Dark  and originated the lead role of Gerry Goffin (Carole King’s husband) in  Beautiful: The Carole King Musical . Not bad for a kid who dreamed about performing on Broadway in the back seat of his parents’ minivan on their annual family road-trip to NYC. But the thing about dreams is, they don’t always go as planned. Through a series of funny and revealing stories and songs, ranging from touring the US, to surviving Spider-Man, to enduring steroid shots and Broadway Boos, Jake Epstein shares the rejection, stage fright and heartbreak behind a seemingly successful career in this showbiz tell-all. For anyone who’s ever tried to go after their dreams.

“I’ve spent my life going after my singular dream of performing in musicals on Broadway. And what’s crazy is that I actually achieved that dream. But the reality is that going after your dreams, and even achieving them, can be complicated and filled with disappointments. This show is my attempt to turn those disappointments into theatrical moments of joy and humour. I love story-telling and I thought this was a good story to tell. And you might even laugh.” – Jake Epstein, Playwright/Creator

3. Be Kind, Rewind

family road trip toronto fringe

Judy Blume meets High Fidelity in this funny and heart-warming coming-of-age story written by Barbara Johnston and Suzy Wilde, two of Toronto’s most prolific emerging musical theatre writers. When fifteen-year-old Deirdre and her younger sister Dawn are sent to live with their cousins in Tortoiseshell Lake in the summer of 1995, Deirdre gets a job at the local video store where she finds her voice and falls in love with movies. This is a staged reading of a new musical work from the creative team that brought you Summerland and One Small Step.

“ Be   Kind , Rewind shines a light on growing up in the mid-90’s and pays homage to the now extinct video store. The musical will  be  presented by Edge of the Sky Theatre as a fully staged reading of the show’s second draft (the first draft was developed at the Randolph Academy pre-college program) and will feature over 25 of some of the most talented and diverse young performers in the city with a live acoustic band made up of professionals and emerging musicians. For those who have love 90’s nostalgia, original songs, movies and stories about coming of age, this show is for you!” – Barbara Johnston

We stumbled our way through creative decisions and roadblocks, eventually finding our footing and our stride as co-creators, standing proudly where we are today. With the guidance, belief, enthusiasm and wisdom of our many colleagues, friends and contemporaries, we have been built up by our community to create this work for you. To all of those who were special to us in our lives, who live in our memories and in our actions, our work is for you and those who love you.” – Allison Wither, Composer

5. Boy’s Don’t Cry

family road trip toronto fringe

Boys Don’t Cry explores what it means to be a man in our world through the story of Jayden Stone. As Jayden falls in love with outspoken feminist Roseanne, he is forced to reconcile the influence of his troubled late father on his life, and reevaluate the kind of man he wants to be. Mateo Lewis, an award-winning, young songwriter explores his complicated relationship with gender in this musical coming-of-age story.

“We raise the men in this world to be obsessed with competition and superiority.  If you look around, every issue in society is caused by insecure men feeling like they have something to prove.  This show came out of a question — “How can we raise our young men to be a focused on love and kindness, instead of selfishness and competition? And how can we be better than the men who came before us?”   As a queer man, having the opportunity to explore these themes of toxic masculinity and getting to work with this unbelievable team of artists and humans, is an absolute dream come true. Can’ t  wait for Fringe — hope to see you all there!”  – Mateo Lewis

  6. TITA JOKES

Meet the Spice Girls of Comedy with a Filipina Twist. They sing, they dance, and they’re going to make you snort-laugh halo-halo through your nose! Join the Toronto SketchFest 2019 Producers’ Pick winners, the Tita Collective, for a musical sketch comedy spectacle to remember. TITA POWER!

“As Filipinx, we grow up dancing, singing, acting, and making jokes with our family. A typical Famjam usually consists of gathering around the buffet table set up by your parents, exchanging stories filled with laughter and often chismis (which means gossip – now you know), with the not-so-distant sound of relatives singing along to your Tito’s acoustic rendition of “My Way”, and the younger cousins joining the Titas in an impromptu line-dancing battle. The celebration of life shown through these heart-filled moments is what we as the Tita Collective wanted to honour through our upcoming show, Tita Jokes . By sharing these stories, we share our people’s affection for storytelling, music and humour. By sharing these stories, we share with everyone else how our Titas and Titos show their love towards us.” – The TITA Collective

Best friends Amanda and Devin are totally real adults who want to celebrate their 30th birthdays at The Most Magical Place On Earth. Only a few things stand in their way: money, jobs, partners and timing. Fuelled by boxed wine and an indie-pop soundtrack, Amanda and Devin are determined to make this trip happen. If only real life didn’t have real responsibilities. Three-time Fringe Festival award winners Bad Dress Productions return with a new original musical by Greg McLeod (Good For Grapes).

“When Bad Dress Productions was drawn in the Fringe lottery, real-life BFFs David Poon (Writer/Producer) and Jessica Kostuck (Director) met in Montreal, their former university stomping grounds, to drink a box of wine and write a musical. So, naturally, BFFs has actors drinking an entire box of wine on stage throughout the course of the show – which requires quite a bit of bladder control!” – Jessica Kostuck, Director

8. UNRAVELLED: A New Musical

Three of the greatest love stories of all time (Romeo & Juliet, Orpheus & Eurydice, The Gift Of The Magi) are retold and reimagined to create an entirely new and epically romantic tale.World famous musician, Orpheus and the beautiful noblewoman, Eurydice instantly fall in love and quickly marry. At their wedding, Romeo (Eurydice’s brother) and Juliet (Orpheus’ dear friend) see one another from across the room and cannot take their eyes off each other. Meanwhile, Della and James (from The Gift Of The Magi) desperately want to buy each other special gifts for their upcoming anniversary but neither has any money, as Della is Juliet’s servant (nurse), and James is a poor apothecary who sells medicines and potions in a broken old shop. Letters are written, potions are sold, and love is abound. All three stories begin as they always have, but quickly intertwine and take a dramatic turn from how we all know them. Who lives, who dies, who finds love, and who loses everything when all is unravelled?

“I had always dreamed of writing three separate musicals of these three epic love stories as they all explore the idea of what we do for love, and what we will do for those we love. The thought of writing ‘one’ musical with all ‘three’ stories, however, never occurred to me until I sat down and started writing a completely different show. As soon as I asked, “What if Della from ‘Magi’ was Juliet’s nurse?”, everything fell into place and the story unfolded effortlessly. I was surprised by how quickly the narrative took what I had originally thought of as problem sections and turned them into opportunities to intertwine the three stories even more. It was like putting together a jigsaw puzzle with some of the greatest literary tales of all time.” – Andrew Seok

Day trips from Toronto

1. niagara falls and niagara-on-the-lake.

Niagara Falls are by far the most popular road trip destination from Toronto at just under 2 hours with spectacular scenery and a truly unique experience.

Set on the border between the United States and Canada, Niagara Falls are probably the most famous waterfall in the world.

There are actually three separate waterfalls that form Niagara Falls - the Horseshoe Falls, the American Falls and the Bridal Veil Falls. The Horseshoe Falls sits right on the border between the two countries with the other two being on the US side.

Spectacular Niagara Falls between USA and Canada less than 2 hours' road trip from Toronto

As the water flows from Lake Eerie into Lake Ontario, over 6 million cubic feet of water drops 50m every minute creating a truly amazing sight and a lot of noise.

Despite the cold winters of Ontario, Niagara Falls never fully freeze. Some years they can get surface ice forming with the waterfall continuing to function underneath.

The two countries separated by the falls have made use of the volume of water that comes through the waterfall with 50% of all water during the day and 75% at night (when there are no visitors) diverted through huge tunnels to hydroelectric power plants. These generate over a quarter of all electricity used in New York State and Ontario.

You can visit Niagara Falls from both, the Canadian and the US side with good viewing opportunities in both locations.

Make sure you go through the town Niagara-On-The-Lake sitting downstream on Lake Ontario - the Heritage District is quaint and is great for a walk and the drive to and from will take you past beautiful wineries making for a great detour.

For those who like a little hike, stop off at Dundas Peak which is directly en route - this amazing lookout offers stunning views from the top of a sheer cliff as well as visiting a couple of much smaller waterfalls - Tews Falls and Webster Falls.

2. Toronto to Muskoka

You will notice that lakes form a big part of this list of road trips from Toronto - aside from the Great Lakes surrounding Ontario, a large part of the province is covered by a network of small lakes, rivers, streams and islands and Muskoka is the closest of these to Toronto.

The villages and towns of Muskoka are known for a relaxed atmosphere and large cottages which are very popular with Toronto residents in the summer months - making for perfect weekend getaways.

The serenity of the area means the population of the District of Muskoka almost triples in the summer with hideaways along lakes Muskoka, Rosseau and Joseph in demand.

Some of Hollywood's biggest stars have summer homes here including Tom Hanks, Steven Spielberg and Kurt Russell.

Much what there is to do in Muskoka focuses on nature - there are hiking trails and national parks that offer activities like mountain biking, cycling and horseback riding.

The lakes also offer every watersport activity you might be interested in. Alternatively, you can rent a boat and explore the many coves, islands and waterways at your leisure.

Driving time: 2 hours 10 minutes

3. algonquin provincial park.

If Muskoka is not quite remote enough or you want to see more nature and less development, the Algonquin Provincial Park is where you need to head from Toronto.

This large park sits to the north-east of Muskoka and is a large nature reserve with thousands of lakes (yes - there are over 2,400 of them here), islands, mountains and dense forests.

Route 60 is the easiest way into the park from Toronto although roads leading further into the park come from the Trans-Canada Highway running to the north or the south-east corner closer to Ottawa. We have a detailed guide about the road trip from Toronto to Ottawa here .

There are a few hiking trails to explore that are closer to Toronto ranging from 4 to over 50 miles long (6 to 90 km). These go along rivers, lakes and through forests and you can see a lot of waterfalls and nature along the way.

Take care - the wildlife here includes moose and bears as well as various species of birds.

The most popular way to explore the park is by canoe - this way you can get to a lot of sights simply not accessible by road so you can park up at Canoe Lake or Lake Opeongo and spend the weekend in one of the campsites located throughout the river and lake network. Remember to book your spot on the park's website!

Driving time: 3 hours 20 minutes

4. Prince Edward County, Kingston and Gananoque

Heading east along Lake Ontario's north shore will take you towards Prince Edward County, Kingston and Gananoque as you reach St Lawrence River.

This is a road trip for those who like the finer things in life and it starts off on the right note as the route takes you through vineyards, picturesque towns and then more vineyards.

Vineyard in Prince Edward County in Ontario with a keg at the front

Prince Edward County is on an island with 4 bridges and one small ferry providing access. There are a lot of fine restaurants and opportunities to sample local wines, so make it a long weekend or even longer if you have the time!

The ferry can be a decent option as you continue and make your way to Kingston although it only holds 21 cars so if you want to avoid a wait, head north and cross over the Quinte Skyway.

Both Kingston and Gananoque are set along the river and have a certain charm with a strong European influence on the architecture and a beautiful setting. Don't miss Fort Henry in Kingston - a remarkable sight that is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Gananoque has a number of activities relating to the Thousand Islands which deserves a road trip of its own - see below (unless you want to make it into a week to remember!)

If you like wine, plan out a few stops at wineries along the way - you can taste the wines and take home a case of your favourite to make your road trip that much more memorable!

Distance from Toronto: 193 miles (311 km)

Driving time: 4 hours 30 minutes

5. The Thousand Islands

You can choose to go a little further along the St Lawrence River and spend time exploring the Thousand Islands - a large group of islands along the river sitting on the border between Canada and the United States.

Beautiful scenery, quirky museums, relaxing fishing and some fantastic restaurants are some of the reasons to visit the area. There are also a few really picturesque towns and castles to visit.

Boldt Castle on Heart Island in the St Lawrence River, USA

The best way to explore the area is to visit both the Canadian and the US side of the border - the Thousand Islands crossing runs between two of the biggest islands - Hill Island on the Canadian side and Wellesley Island on the US side.

The largest of the islands, Wolfe Island is entirely in Ontario and some of the smaller islands cannot be visited and are privately owned including Deer Island which is owned by the Skull and Bones secret society.

Boldt Castle is a must see if you are in the area. Originally commissioned by the millionaire George Boldt, the castle was never finished with construction abandoned in 1904 when Boldt's wife died. Since the 70s, the castle is managed by the Thousand Island Bridge Authority and work is ongoing to complete the castle from visitors' ticket revenues. Take note that Boldt Castle is only open from mid-May to mid-October.

The less known Singer Castle on Dark Island is also worth visiting - this is a privately owned castle located downstream towards the end of the island group. There are hidden wine cellars and a lot of other quirks to explore.

A few of the islands have beautiful shallow sand beaches which can be perfect for spending a day relaxing and swimming in the summer and others are popular with fishermen with pike the most sought after fish in the local waters.

Distance from Toronto: 220 miles (354 km)

6. Bruce Peninsula National Park

The Bruce Peninsula National Park is a perfect place to explore nature on a rocky outcrop separating Lake Huron from the Georgian Bay.

The large park is home to a lot of wildlife ranging from black bears, coyotes and chipmunks to porcupines, deer, hares and turtles. You may come across some of these on the various hiking trails that run through the park that range from short strolls to extensive expert-level hikes.

Cove Island Lighthouse off Bruce Peninsula in Ontario, 3 hours away from Toronto

The most famous trail is the Bruce Trail which runs all the way from the Niagara river to Tobermory at the northern tip of the Bruce Peninsula. You can reach the Overhanging Point via the Bruce Trail by crossing Boulder Beach - it is a rock that sticks out from a cliff offering stunning views and jaw dropping photo opportunities. Take great care as there is no safety net and it is a long way down.

A key sight is the Grotto formation along the peninsula's coast. Popular as a social media backdrop, it is a large archway leading to a cave.

Take note that parking can be difficult during peak season, especially at weekends. Booking online is strongly advised as you will be turned away from the Grotto if you do not have a reservation. A daily parking booking in the summer costs $17.70 for the Grotto if you book online.

If you're camping, you can book your campsite location in advance as well to make sure you have a spot. If you want to spend a night in the wild, get a permit from the Cyprus Lake Office and you can pitch up in some parts of the park along the trails.

Park entrance fees: Family or Group - $19.60, Adults - $7.80, Seniors - $6.80, youth go free, winter visits receive a 25% discount

Distance from Toronto: 185 miles (298 km)

Driving time: 3 hours 40 minutes

7. Manitoulin Island and Greater Sudbury

Manitoulin Island is the largest freshwater island in the world at over 1,000 square miles and sits between Lake Huron and the Georgian Bay to the north of the Bruce Peninsula.

The island is so big that it has 4 rivers and over 100 lakes within it with some of those lakes having islands of their own!

Little Current Swing Bridge carrying Highway 6 from Goat Island to Manitoulin Island

You can get to the island via a ferry from Tobermory on the Bruce Peninsula, but despite the longer route, it will take about as long to drive around the lake via Sudbury so it could be a good idea to take different routes on the way to and from Manitoulin to see more places on your road trip.

Route 6 from the north passes through the Little Current Swing Bridge - a unique bridge that can turn sideways to let boats pass through the Little Current waterway.

The island has a large Anishinaabe population with dedicated reserves as well as a few towns and villages dotted around.

Greater Sudbury is the largest town in Northern Ontario although it still has a small town feel. There are a couple of museums including one about the history of nickel mining and two art galleries. As you're driving past, it's worth a visit and is good for breaking up the long drive.

Distance from Toronto: 370 miles (596 km)

Driving time: 6 hours 30 minutes

8. Detroit, Heidelberg Project and Ann Arbor

With Toronto being so close to the United States in almost every direction, this is another road trip where you'll need to bring your passport with you.

Detroit is only a few hours away and is a fascinating place to visit with a rich, vibrant and very poignant history.

Heidelberg project - the outdoor museum project in Detroit, Michigan - across the border from Toronto

Motor City, as it is known, became an industrial powerhouse and the second largest city in the Midwest after Chicago on the back of a fast growing car manufacturing industry.

Companies such as Ford, Dodge, Chrysler and General Motors with brands like Chevrolet, Buick and Cadillac called Detroit their home with the majority of their production happening in the city's factories.

Following a steep decline in the 70s, the city hit upon much harder times and you can witness these as you drive through empty neighborhoods and crumbling old factory buildings.

While a major improvement programme is underway and the city is working on reinventing itself, tourism is growing and we would highly recommend visiting for a rich cultural experience.

Part of the regeneration effort is the Heidelberg project - it is an outdoor art installation in east Detroit that depicts protest and brings attention to the demise of the city and the decades of neglect. The different pieces are made using brightly colored salvage materials highlighting the level of poverty.

Ann Arbor is close to Detroit and is a stark contrast to its larger neighbor. The town is full of charm with classic buildings, some of which comprise the Michigan University, various art galleries, small shops and cafes and other interesting places to explore.

If you're visiting Detroit, it is definitely worth making the extra trip.

Distance from Toronto: 279 miles (447 km)

Driving time: 4 hours 45 minutes

Week long and longer road trips from Toronto

9. lake ontario.

Maybe one of the best ways to spend a week doing a road trip from Toronto is a drive around the Lake of Ontario coming full circle back to Toronto.

This drive will include a lot of the trips we recommend for shorter journeys - you can call in at Prince Edward County, Kingston, Gananogue and visit the Niagara Falls on your back into Canada.

Bright sky at sunset and lamp on the shore of Lake Ontario in Canada

The U.S. side has more things to see in upstate New York. You can take a detour to the Ausable Chasm - a river with rapids flowing through a stunning gorge near Lake Placid or Ithaca Falls.

Staying close to the lake is also great though - the towns of Sackets Harbor (right on the lake) and Skaneateles further south are pretty and relaxed. Oswego is another town worth visiting - it's definitely a good idea to stick to Route 104 rather than the faster roads further from the lake for the trip.

You will need to cross the border into the United States at the Thousand Islands crossing and back at Lewiston-Queenston Bridge near the Niagara Falls.

Distance from Toronto: 570 miles (917 km)

Driving time: 10 hours 30 minutes

10. Ottawa, Montreal and Quebec City

This is an amazing road trip that takes you from Toronto to the Gulf of St Lawrence on the Atlantic Ocean driving the length of the St Lawrence River from Lake Ontario.

The landscapes along the route change from wineries and lakeside villages to long roads through mixed forests and eventually the harsh eastern coastline.

Frontenac Castle in Old Quebec City at sunrise - at the end of a road trip from Toronto

The main cities of eastern Canada are all en route. Starting from Toronto, the route takes you to Ottawa, Montreal and Quebec City before ending in Tadoussac.

Ottawa is Canada's capital and has a rich history making for an interesting stay. Visit the Rideau Canal, Parliament Buildings on Parliament Hill or one of a number of great museums around the city.

Montreal is the second largest French-speaking city in the world after Paris and two thirds of the population are fully bilingual which creates a unique cultural mix.

Quebec City is famous for its Old World charm with the Old Quebec town, the Château Frontenac above it and the Citadel all adding to a very European vibe.

Tadoussac is a popular destination for tourists - it was the first French colony in North America founded in 1600 and you can see history throughout the town that served as a trading and fishing hub for centuries. The surrounding coves and fjords are stunning and this is one of the best locations in the world for whale watching so make sure you go on an excursion to get up close and personal.

11. Lake Michigan

Lake Michigan is the second largest of the Great Lakes and the only one located entirely within the United States of America.

You can start your trip by driving towards Detroit and crossing Michigan or taking the scenic route along Georgian Bay and crossing into the U.S. along the Sault Ste. Marie International Bridge.

Chicago skyline with skyscrapers facing Lake Michigan

Driving through Michigan is much more direct so if you're heading that way, you can meet Lake Michigan at St Joseph before heading around the southern tip and into Chicago.

Chicago is the third most populated city in the United States and has a lot to see and experience. Tall observation decks might not be quite so impressive given Toronto's CN Tower has the highest one in North America but the music scene, theatres and fantastic restaurants are all great reasons to spend at least a couple of days.

For the foodies, other than the obvious deep dish pizza, try the dipped Italian beef sandwich - thank us later!

From Chicago, the route goes north stopping in Milwaukee and Green Bay before crossing back from Wisconsin into Michigan and going through the less populated areas on the northern side of the lake and the Hiawatha National Forest.

After you pass through the Sault Ste. Marie State Forest Area and over the Mackinac Bridge, the route down the Michigan coast goes through a number of quaint pretty towns including Traverse City.

Distance from Toronto: 1,650 miles (2,650 km)

Driving time: 26 hours

12. Toronto to Upstate New York

Ok - the nearest parts of upstate New York may only be a couple of hours away, but we're talking about a much deeper exploration of the Empire State. If you want to only visit New York City, read our detailed guide about that road trip here .

Once you've crossed over the border and past Niagara Falls, the route heads towards the Finger Lakes - you can explore some great wine country at the Cayuga Wine Trail and explore the beautiful towns of Skaneateles and Ithaca.

After heading south towards the border with Pennsylvania the Delaware River valley offers one stunning driving road - in Route 97 that passes through Callicoon.

Route 97 in Catskills Mountains winding along river Delaware in upstate New York

After snaking along the river driving the road of choice for too many cheesy adverts, you can divert into the Catskills and explore the trails and nature of New Yorkers' favourite getaway location.

After crossing over to the Hudson, you can follow the river north back towards Canada and visit the capital of New York State - Albany and stop at the State Capitol building there.

Further stops at The Sagamore (stunning lakeside village) and Lake Placid before you get to the river valley at Ausable Chasm on Lake Champlain that forms the border with Vermont.

Best way to return is to follow the U.S. - Canada border back towards the Thousand Islands and then drive along the north shore of Lake Ontario to arrive back in Toronto.

Distance from Toronto: 1,050 miles (1,690 km)

13. Thunder Bay and Quetico Provincial Park

This is a mammoth trip, although most definitely worth it for the sights when you eventually get there!

There are two options for getting to Thunder Bay - the slightly quicker one takes you along the north shores of Georgian Bay and Lake Superior with the journey being approximately 900 miles one way.

Canoe and oar on the rocks of Knife Lake in Quetico Provincial Park, Canada

If you don't fancy coming back the exact same route, then crossing down into the United States along the International Bridge at Fort Frances means you can along the south of Lake Superior and Lake Huron at the cost of 3 hours.

You'll want to add plenty of stops along the way - the route will take 2 days of solid driving on its own!

The truth is - this is one of those road trips where the process of getting there is better than the actual destination. The routes around the two Great Lakes pass through amazing parks and offer options to divert into places like the French River Provincial Park or check out the beaches of Pukaskwa National Park.

On the way back, there are a number of large national forests in the U.S. as well as the picture-perfect towns in northern Michigan making for a really outstanding drive.

Some of the other trips above and below cover parts of this mega route so if you're short on time and don't want to spend 2 days in a car, there are other options. If you do, though, you'll be rewarded with a complete experience of the rivers, waterfalls, forests and views of the Great Lakes.

14. Quebec and Saguenay Fjord

If the drive from Toronto up to Tadoussac didn't quite feel like you'd see enough of Quebec and light on miles, this is the road trip that should get you excited.

Not for the faint-hearted, the mammoth tour of Quebec goes a little off the beaten track to explore the amazing nature and towns further north.

Mont Tremblant town, view of the lake and National Park in the fall

First stop is to head to Ottawa and crossing the Ottawa River into Gatineau to start your Quebec adventure.

You will drive past thousands of lakes (we're not exaggerating) and through stunning national parks along the route. First off, the trip goes towards Aiguebelle Park in Abitibi. To break up the driving, you can stop off at La Verendrye Wildlife Reserve.

If that doesn't seem wild enough, the journey then continues along Routes 113 and 167 through conifer forests on the way to Oujé-Bougoumou for some fishing and relaxing away from civilization.

Next stop is Lac St Jean and the Saguenay Fjord. Stunning views are guaranteed and you will progressively feel like you are getting back towards actual towns.

After a stop off at Tadoussac for a spot of whale watching, you're then just making your way back to Toronto through Quebec City, Montreal and back along the north shore of Lake Ontario.

Distance from Toronto: 1,770 miles (2,850 km)

Driving time: 32 hours

15. The Michigan coastline

A curve ball of a road trip option for those who like to mix culture with a bit of lakeside driving.

The idea is to head down to Michigan and drive the length of its coastline along Lake Michigan and Lake Huron.

Quaint Riverplace Shops in Frankenmuth's downtown - Michigan off Lake Huron

Michigan has some amazingly good looking towns and villages all along the coastline - if you make your way to the southern park of Lake Michigan, and drive north, you will pass places like South Haven, Grand Haven, Traverse City and Charlevoix on your way up.

There are other sights as well - the Silver Lakes Sand Dunes is a giant desert-like sand dune that has all the appearance of being on Mars. The Sleeping Bear Dunes further north are long white sand beaches which are perfect for a day of relaxation and a picnic.

As you continue onto Lake Huron, there is a long stretch of the coast that forms part of the Cheboygan State Park and great fish restaurants in tow.

The east side of Michigan is generally less touristy and as a result cheaper and less fancy which is an interesting contrast given almost equally great views and natural landscapes.

As you move further south, the town of Frankenmuth, a little inland from the lake, is a must stop on your itinerary.

You could be forgiven for thinking you have been transported to the Bavarian Alps with the scenery and architecture having a strong central European vibe. Have a (very good) chicken dinner that the town is famous for and take a ride on a riverboat along the Cass River before crossing back into Canada and driving back to Toronto.

Distance from Toronto: 1,460 miles (2,350 km)

Essex county wintery that you can visit on a road trip from Toronto

1. Essex County

Essex Pelee Island Coast (EPIC) is an emerging wine region in Essex County, southern Ontario. It’s the perfect region to escape to for a few days of wine tasting, cycling, and enjoying beautiful views of Lake Erie.

This wine country getaway is easily done as a weekend trip, as it’s just a 4 hour drive from Toronto , down Highway 401. The most convenient place to stay is in a hotel, BnB, or Airbnb in the nearby towns of Kingsville, Leamington, or Amherstberg. Or, you can book a unique accommodation like glamping in a floating geodesic dome !

Essex County is home to many family-owned and operated wineries that rest along the North Shore of Lake Erie.

There are over 18 wineries in the area, making it the perfect region for a wine tour . You can do a tour independently, driving yourself to each winery. Or, rent a bicycle to ride through the countryside from winery to winery.

Just be sure to drink responsibly!

For a more formal wine country experience, you can join a tour.

There are guided cycling and segway tours available, or you can join WE Trolley Tours. It’s a hop on, hop off service that brings you between wineries in an antique trolley.

You also have the option to stop by local breweries and distilleries!

There are several notable wineries in Essex County, including Paglione Estate Winery . The winery’s founder Santino Paglione was born in Italy, but immigrated to Canada as a child. He made wines all his life, and it was his dream to open his own winery. He finally achieved his dream in 2013, when he opened Paglione Estate Winery.

The winery pays homage to Paglione’s Italian heritage by making high-quality, small-batch wines and serving a menu of antipasti platters, pizza, and handmade gelato.

Other notable wineries include Viewpointe Estate Winery , Colio Estate Winery , and Cooper’s Hawk Vineyard .

It’s possible to do wine tastings and dine at most of the region’s wineries, and of course, you can purchase a bottle of wine (or 2, or 3!) so that you can bring the taste of EPIC back home to Toronto with you.

Niagara waterfalls with turquoise waters. Classic road trip from Toronto

7. Niagara Falls

Largely considered one of the top natural wonders of the world, the jaw-dropping Niagara Falls – located a convenient 1.5 hour drive from Toronto – makes for an idyllic road trip destination at any given time of the year.

Though, like anywhere, there are perks to visiting during each of the varying seasons.

Consider the warmer summer months if you wish to spend longer periods of time outdoors, be it traversing the boardwalk that trails alongside the rushing waters or amidst the bustling streets that brim with shops and restaurants alike (a visit to the Fallsview Restaurant is a must-do if you wish to dine in style, harboring one of the best views around!).

Getting to Niagara Falls is simple enough – just hop on the 403 heading southbound toward Hamilton and follow for an hour and a half until the exit for the Niagara Veterans Memorial Highway E.

Take this exit, and you’ll find yourself in the heart of the Niagara Falls downtown core.

From here, opt for street parking or park at your accommodations – of which there is no shortage, including those with a towering view of the falls themselves such as the Marriott, Wyndham, or Hilton.

It’s recommended to spend at least a half-day in Niagara Falls if you’re just hoping to get a view of the waterfall and maybe spend a little time perusing the touristy hotspots.

However, to really delve deep into the heart of this southern Ontario oasis, consider a 3 day trip to take in the lesser trafficked yet equally worthwhile sights, too!

Small island with cottages and a dock in the Thousand Islands, Ontario

10. Gananoque and the Thousand Islands

The Thousand Islands is a large cluster of over 1800 archipelago islands in the St Lawrence River.  They spread from the north-eastern corner of Lake Ontario, down the St Lawrence River for 50 miles.

Gananoque is the perfect town to base yourself for a visit and is only 3 hours from Toronto by road trip or train ride.

The St Lawrence River sits on the border between Ontario and New York State, so the islands are in both countries.

You can take a  boat cruise around the Thousand Islands from Gananoque , and even visit Boldt Castle.  This fairy-tale castle on Heart Island is in US waters, so you must bring your passport and go through a tiny customs control.

In Gananoque, there are lots of cute B&Bs, like the beautiful 1000 Islands Bed and Breakfast.

If you’d prefer a hotel, the Gananoque Inn & Spa is not far from the lake and downtown.

Partake in the local hospitality with live music and craft beers at the Stonewater Pub; before enjoying dinner on the patio at Watermark Restaurant (part of Gananoque Inn & Spa).

Perfect for a long weekend away from the city in the spring or fall, the Thousand Islands area will have you wanting to return.  Gananoque gets very busy in the summer but would be a good place to spend school holidays, as there is lots to keep the family occupied.

Prince Edward county beach through the trees with sand. A great Ontario road trip stop.

11. Prince Edward County

One of the hottest destinations in Ontario is Prince Edward County.

Only 2 hours east of Toronto, it has quickly become the sought-after weekend getaway popular with families, couples, and friends who are looking for a relaxing city break.

With such a wide array of things to do, here’s  the best of what Prince Edward County  has to offer.

The County, as locals like to call it, is the second-largest wine region in Ontario. With close to 40 wineries, renovated old barns or sleek modern buildings have been turned into cool tasting rooms.

If you’re not a wine lover, that’s okay, as craft breweries and ciders are just as popular.

Delicious farm-to-table restaurants spread throughout The County, with The Drake Devonshire, being a favourite brunch spot as well as accommodation.

Some of the largest and best beaches can be found in Sandbanks Provincial Park. Soft golden sand, natural sand dunes, and pebble beaches are dotted along the Lake Ontario shoreline.

Crystal clear shallow water extends the water activities into the fall season.

Stroll through the cute shops and cafes that line the main streets in the charming small towns of Wellington, Bloomfield, and Picton.

The County also features a thriving arts community with its own art studio tour. Year-round studios and galleries feature amazing local works in sculpture, paintings, glass, ceramics, and photography.

All the spaces – whether it be the eateries, wineries, shops, or accommodations share a similar vibe – it’s a relaxed, vintage, modern country.

That’s the best of Prince Edward County that keeps people coming back time and time again.

Elora Mill on the river with green foliage surrounding it. Visit on a road through from Toronto.

Located in Wellington County, Elora is about an hour and a half drive from Toronto.

Nestled along the Grand River in Southern Ontario, road tripping to this gorgeous area is as easy as taking the Gardiner Expy W, to the 401 W. From there, hop on Highway 6 N to Wellington County Rd 39, and then take Wellington Rd 7 to Colborne St in Elora.

Although visiting Elora at any time of the year is a wonderful experience, during the summer, the town comes alive with music festivals, farmers markets, and art shows.

Summer is also when all the little boutiques and shops along the main street are open, along with outdoor patios and dining options.

Head to the Elora Gorge for some camping or hiking, walk the boardwalk at Bissel Park, or take a dip in the Elora Quarry.

There are a ton of outdoor activities to take advantage of during the summer season in Elora.

If shopping is on the agenda, Elora’s main street is lined with wonderful little shops where visitors will find one-of-a-kind trinkets and treasures. From blown glass baubles to antiques, books, clothing, and housewares, Elora is a great place to spend the day perusing small family-run shops.

Covered red wood bridge in Woolwich, Ontario

13. Woolwich

St. Jacob’s is about an hour’s drive from Toronto in the Township of Woolwich. Many folks come for the St Jacob’s Farmer’s Market but the village of St. Jacobs is a treat to wander.

There are two live theatre venues here the St. Jacob’s Country Playhouse and the St. Jacobs Schoolhouse Theatre. The Playhouse was built in traditional Mennonite style and is located near the Market district. The Schoolhouse is in the heart of Old Town St. Jacob’s in a renovated 1867 schoolhouse.

The Village of St. Jacobs is steeped in history and known for its Old Order Mennonite population. The shops in the village are all independent retailers with many a store devoted to artisan works from folk art to fine paintings.

In Woolwich Township you can visit the West Montrose Covered Bridge Ontario’s last remaining covered bridge.  Nicknamed the Kissing Bridge because early horse and buggy riders would often stop and while concealed would risk a kiss. The bridge is a short 12-minute drive from St. Jacob’s.

A real treat is a ride on the Heritage Waterloo Central Railway for a short trip to Elmira or if you are a true train enthusiast you can enjoy North America’s finest 0-scale model train layout at the St. Jacobs & Aberfolye Model Railway.

If you are interested in learning more about Mennonites then you can head to the centre of town to see The Mennonite Story, a multimedia interpretive centre that shares Mennonite history and culture.

An amazing restaurant in St. Jacob’s (if I don’t fill up on street food at the Market) is the Village Biergarten. The Biergarten serves excellent Mexican-influenced dishes with some fabulous craft beers.

The Blue Bruce is the perfect place to relax and unwind. This Bed and Breakfast is a rustic BnB set in the middle of a calm wooded area. In the winter months you can enjoy a steaming hot tub , cozy fires, and some of the best food in the area.

Woman hiking on a cliff face over the green forests of Manitoulin Island, Ontario

15. Manitoulin Island

The idyllic landscape of Manitoulin Island is a magical place where both adventure and relaxation await.

There are many factors that make this road trip unique, one being the fact that it is the largest freshwater island in the world!

It is also one of the quieter and lesser-known destinations in Ontario, which makes it an ideal getaway if you are trying to avoid tourists.

The best time to visit is between late spring to the summer.

Located approximately six hours driving from Toronto, there are two main routes. You can either drive directly to the island around the Georgian Bay, or you can go to the Bruce Peninsula and take the Chi-Cheemaun Ferry across the bay.

Both are very scenic and it simply depends on what you want to see along the way. It is recommended that you have at least three days to spend at the island to absorb the adventure it offers and to make the long drive worthwhile.

Manitoulin Island boasts incredible views and hiking trails. A must-do hike is the Cup and Saucer Trail , and if you are interested in fun and surprises, the “Adventure Trail” is a route made for you! It’s not difficult but it is one of the rockier trails in Ontario, so make sure you wear hiking boots with ankle support and tread.

The island is also rich with First Nations history. Book a tour with the Great Spirit Circle Trail and visit the Ojibwe Cultural Foundation to learn more about the history that is so important for the beautiful country of Canada.

As with any road trip in Ontario, the cottage experience is essential, and the Viva Villa Cottage Resort is one of the best places to stay. Viva Villa’s cabins are very affordable and all have a beautiful view of Lake Kagawong.

A bonus is that amenities (even canoes) are included with your stay.

And when you are surrounded by water, you would probably expect the fish to be plentiful and delicious!

Treat yourself to Manitoulin Whitefish at Duke’s Fish and Chips or many other restaurants around the island.

Ontario Driving Tips

In Ontario, the ONRoutes are pit stops along the major 400 highways. They are open 24/7 and offer food, fuel, and washroom facilities.

This is a clean, safe space to stop to get gas, grab a double double, and stretch your legs on your road trip across Ontario.

Trans Canada Highway

The Trans Canada Highway stretches over 8000 kilometres across Canada, from Victoria, BC to St. John’s, NL.

This route takes you through some of the most gorgeous scenery in the country, including snow-capped mountains, pristine lakes, and lush forests.

If you’re looking for a truly epic Canadian road trip, the Trans Canada Highway is the way to go.

Speed Limits

In Ontario, the speed limit on most highways is 100 km/hour. However, there are some exceptions.

The section of Highway 401 between Windsor and Toronto has a posted speed limit of 80 km/hour.

And in some areas of northern Ontario, the speed limit may be as low as 50 km/hour.

Be sure to obey the speed limit, and watch for signs indicating changes in speed limit.

Gas prices vary greatly from one part of Ontario to the next. The further north you go, the higher the gas prices will be.

However, on unceded Indigenous territory, like on Manitoulin Island , gas is much cheaper.

Winter Tires

Although you don’t legally need winter tires in Ontario as you do in Quebec , it’s still a good idea to have them.

Winter tires are designed to grip the road better in slippery conditions, and can help you stay safe on the roads during the winter months.

If you’re planning a road trip in Ontario during the winter, be sure to equip your vehicle with a set of good winter tires.

Canadian Driving Etiquette

When driving in Canada, it’s important to remember our country’s unique driving etiquette.

Here are a few key points to keep in mind:

  • Yield to the right-of-way
  • Don’t honk your horn unnecessarily
  • Use your turn signals
  • Drive at the posted speed limit
  • Put your hand up in thanks if someone lets you merge.

By following these simple tips, you’ll help keep the roads safe for everyone and ensure a smooth driving experience

Canada Travel Planning Guide

🚑  Should I buy Canada travel insurance?

100% YES!  — Canada has “free” healthcare but it’s only for citizens! Foreigners visiting need travel insurance in case anything happens on their visit. I recommend World Nomads – starting at just $5 a day!

💧 Can you drink the water in Canada?

Yes  — In all major cities in Canada, you can drink the tap water. There are very few, rural areas that you can’t. However, you should never drink river or lake water anywhere in the country! I recommend a Brita Water Bottle for long hikes and backcountry camping to stay safe and hydrated.

🚙💨  Is it safe to rent a car in Canada?

Yes  — Renting a car is a necessity in most of Canada! If you want to go on road trips or adventures outside of the major cities, you’ll need to rent a car. ( Read more )

📲  Will my phone work in Canada?

Maybe  — Some American companies work in Canada, but many will not. If your phone doesn’t work in Canada, I recommend getting a Canadian SIM card so you can get around and stay in contact with loved ones. We don’t have a lot of free WIFI in Canada, so you’ll need your phone for maps.

🏩  What’s the best way to book my Canada accommodations?

My go-to for Canadian hotels is Booking.com . For hostels, I use Hostel World . If you want a home-y feeling, check out VRBO (which is cheaper and safer than Airbnb).

Or get free accommodations with Trusted Housesitters!

✈️  What’s the best site to buy Canada flights?

For finding cheap Canadian flights, I recommend  Skyscanner .

🎫  Do I need a visa for Canada?

Likely Not  — US, UK, and EU passport holders don’t need Canadian visas. However, some other countries do ( check here! ). And if you plan to stay for more than 4 weeks (an average tourist visa length), you will need to look into visas to live in Canada.

Prince Edward County and Kingston

Distance from Toronto: 110 miles | 177 km to Prince Edward County. 162 miles | 261 km to Kingston

Prince Edward County

This is the epitome of a classy road trip, with all the essential road trip requirements for those who enjoy the finer things in life. It is a beautiful drive along the north shore of Lake Ontario, passing through vineyards and scenic towns. We recommend visiting both Prince Edwards County and Kingston, and staying a night in both if possible!

Prince Edward County would be your first stop on the way from Toronto. The county is located on an island which can be accessed by one of four bridges, or by ferry. The county boasts a lot of amazing restaurants and, of course, wine! Follow The Taste Trail for a food and wine experience. And don’t forget to stop by Sandbanks Provincial Park .

From Prince Edward County, you can jump back on the road to carry on to Kingston. Or, you can take the ferry, which is a fun way to break up your driving and add some road trip flavor.

Kingston is known as ‘the Limestone City’ for its elaborate and opulent 19th-century buildings. It is a picturesque riverside town with a touch of European ambiance because of the architecture. It is also home to a UNESCO World Heritage Site – Fort Henry in Kingston.

You can continue your road trip up to Gananoque if you have enough time or dedicate an entire road trip to the thousand islands.

For beautiful views of the lake and everything you need for a night or two away, book the Drake Devonshire in Prince Edward County.

Thousand Islands and Gananoque

Distance from Toronto: 178 miles | 286 km

Peaceful landscape of the Thousand Islands during summer with bridge in background along Canada USA border

There are a thousand and one reasons you should embark on this road trip, and a thousand of those reasons are islands. Whether you’ve continued along St Lawrence River from Kingston, or have missioned up directly from Toronto, this is an ideal road trip destination.

The area has no shortage of stunning scenery, quaint towns, world-class restaurants, and fishing spots. There are also some quirky museums about the history of the area. You can visit the unfinished Boldt Castle or explore the hidden wine cellars of the lesser-known Singer Castle.

Many of the islands have pretty shallow sand beaches, perfect for a day of lazing in the sun and wallowing in the water. Or prepare yourself for a brutal fishing fight to reel in a pike at some of the fishing hot spots. Book a boat cruise of Thousand Islands here.

Gananoque is the gateway to the Thousand Islands and a great place to set your base and spend the night.

Bruce Peninsula National Park

Distance from Toronto: 179 miles | 288 km

Bruce Island Peninsula

A wildlife haven, you have a good chance of coming across some of the animals which call this park home on a hiking trail. From black bears to coyotes, and smaller residents such as chipmunks and porcupines, this national park feels wild and untamed.

The park sits on a rocky outcrop separating Lake Huron and Georgian Bay and has a number of famous trails and popular Instagram hot-spots. The Bruce trail is extremely popular and will lead you to the Overhanging Point. The rock, which juts out from a cliff, is an awesome photo opportunity with a backdrop of magnificent views.

Another popular photo spot is the large archway Grotto formation along the peninsula’s coast. It is a stunning rock formation leading into a cave which is a very popular (and busy) site.

This is an amazing group road trip destination from Toronto and is a fun spot to visit with friends. Choosing a holiday house with lake views and a barbecue area is perfect for hanging out with friends.

Destinations for More Than One Night

Oh, how sweet it is to have the luxury of a few days, or even a week, to leisurely drive from one spot to the next. Most of the time we’re eager to jump on flights to maximize our time in the destination.

But you know how the saying goes. It’s not about the destination, it’s about the journey. Check out our favorite picks for road trips that deserve more than a night.

Manitoulin Island

Distance from Toronto: 370 miles | 595 km

The Ten Mile Lookout in winter, Manitoulin Island, Canada

Sitting between Lake Huron and Georgian Bay to the north of Bruce Peninsula is the largest freshwater island in the world. Manitoulin Island is an astounding 1000 square miles and the island has four rivers and over 100 lakes. So it’s an island in a lake, which has its own lakes. Pretty amazing, right?

Besides the island being a freshwater paradise of natural landscapes, it is also home to a large Anishinaabe population . Visitors can learn about the unique indigenous culture by visiting dedicated reserves or the villages dotted around the island.

There are a few routes you can take to get to Manitoulin Island. And it might be worth it to maximize your road-trip sights by taking different roads in and out.

You can take a ferry from Tobermory on the Bruce Peninsula. Or you can drive around the lake via Greater Sudbury, which is a worthwhile stop to break up the long drive. Look out for the Little Current Swing Bridge on route 6 from the north. This is a unique bridge that can turn sideways to let boats pass.

Canada Family Road Trip planning tips

It is a long journey from Toronto to Vancouver as you will drive the Trans Canada Highway for approximately 4,265 km, passing through 3 provinces. Along the route, you will pass through Manitoba, Saskatchewan, and Alberta before reaching your destination of British Columbia.

Route 1 – Trans Canada Highway

There is only one route from Toronto to Winnipeg, which takes about 22 hours and navigates around the Great Lakes until you reach Manitoba.

Once you reach Winnipeg, you have the choice to take the Northern Route and explore Saskatoon and Edmonton or take the more scenic Southern Route that takes you through Regina, Calgary, and Banff.

Along the scenic Southern Route, you can explore lots of untouched natural areas, visit National and Provincial parks, and enjoy the views of the mountains and lakes.

Route 2 – US Route via I-94 W and I-90 W

An alternative route is to cross the Canada-United States Border to Seattle and then pass across the border again to reach Vancouver. Some key locations to include in your road trip are Detroit, Chicago, Sioux Falls, Rapid City and Billings through Illinois, Wisconsin, Minnesota, South Dakota, Wyoming, Montana, Washington, and Seattle. Be prepared that there are tolls on this route.

The total trip is about 42 hours of driving time, which ideally should be split up into a minimum of 5 days to avoid fatigue and to enjoy the beautiful Canadian landscapes, natural areas, cities and towns, as well as a variety of fun attractions.

There are so many beautiful places along this Canadian route that you will want to stop and enjoy and visiting attractions is a great way to get out and stretch your legs.

A good goal is to plan to drive between 5-8 hours a day, depending on the age of your passengers. An important part of this road trip is the destinations between Ontario and British Columbia, not just the final destination.

Realistically, to make memories and enjoy the Canadian road trip across the country, you will want to plan to take a week. You can definitely take longer to truly enjoy all of the amazing Parks Canada spots, unique landscapes, attractions and cities.

The most popular time of year to drive across Canada is in the summer, from June to August when the roads are clear and dry. However, this is peak tourist season, so it will be very busy with tourists.

If you have some flexibility, you may enjoy viewing the fall foliage along the Trans-Canada Highway during the early Fall (September to October), or you may enjoy the awakening of nature and wildlife in the Spring (Mid-April to May) due to rapidly changing weather and road conditions you want to avoid driving the Trans-Canada Highway from November until Mid-April.
