The Punisher Is Back: Jon Bernthal Enters the MCU as a Bloodied Frank Castle in New ‘Daredevil: Born Again’ Set Photos

jon-bernthal

Jon Bernthal is back playing Frank Castle (aka Punisher) on the set of “ Daredevil: Born Again ,” new set photos from which have the character paired up with Charlie Cox’s eponymous hero and soaked in blood. The Disney+ series is now filming in New York City. Bernthal debuted as Frank Castle in Netflix’s “ The Punisher ” series, which aired for two seasons and 26 episodes between 2017 and 2019.

Popular on Variety

“Daredevil: Born Again” has been through a bit of a development rollercoaster. The series parted ways with  head writers Chris Ord and Matt Corman  last October while the production was shut down amid the SAG-AFTRA strike. Marvel also released the directors for the remaining episodes of the season as it decided to take “Born Again” in a new creative direction despite half of the series’ 18-episode order already being shot. Only some elements of pre-existing material is expected to be used in the final cut of the show.

Dario Scardapane, who wrote and executive produced Bernthal’s “The Punisher” series, stepped in to serve as the new “Born Again” showrunner a few weeks after Ord and Corman’s exit. The duo are still being credited as executive producers. Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead — who directed on Marvel’s “Moon Knight” and “Loki” Season 2 — were added as directors. It’s unclear whether or not the original 18-episode order remains.

Crew members prepare to film on the set of "Remembering Colin Stall," which took over the Kiplinger Theatre stage for much of the spring 2024 semester: (l-r) Jamen Meistrich, assistant director; Indeana Underhill, director of photography; and script supervisor/prop master Victoria Serafini, Ph.D. candidate in Performing & Media Arts.

Film set in Schwartz Center: A pop-up laboratory for building worlds

By kate blackwood.

The room on the Kiplinger Theatre stage is paneled in wood and faded yellow-green floral wallpaper. The lamps, beige and dim, barely disturb the shadows dominating every corner. Old family photos march up the wall. A taxidermy deer head gazes down upon a mustard yellow couch draped with a crocheted color-block throw. The stairs, carpeted in gray shag, look as though they might creak under the weight of the tragedy haunting the house.

The shiver-inducing story of the old couple living in that house and a young man who stumbles upon it took root in student filmmaker Peter Levine’s ’24 imagination two years ago. The resulting short film, “Remembering Colin Stall,” came to life this semester on a set installed on the stage.

Designed by  Jason Simms , assistant professor of performing and media arts (PMA) in the College of Arts and Sciences (A&S) and built by PMA crew and students, the film set was the busy heart of the Schwartz Center for the Performing Arts for the first half of the spring 2024 semester.

“It was a pop-up laboratory,” Simms said. “It definitely took on a life outside ‘Colin Stall,’ which was always part of our intention.”

If ‘The King of Comedy’ Inspired ‘Joker,’ Is This Other Scorsese Movie Inspiring the Sequel?

Joker on Broadway?

The Big Picture

  • Joker: Folie à Deux will be a musical sequel directed by Todd Philips, diverging from comic book movie expectations.
  • The film seems to draw inspiration from Martin Scorsese's New York, New York , merging dark themes with the musical genre.
  • The sequel promises a unique, bold take on the Joker narrative, showcasing the characters' shared passion for performance.

The release of the trailer for Joker: Folie à Deux was met with great anticipation and fanfare . Todd Philips ' sequel to the provocative DC Comics adaptation in 2019 has been clouded in mystery. All audiences knew for sure was that Joaquin Phoenix would be reprising his role as Arthur Fleck, and he would be teamed up with the Joker's twisted sidekick, Harley Quinn, played by Lady Gaga . Word had circulated that the Joker sequel would, once again, divert from the banal expectations of comic book movies by operating as a musical. Observant cinephiles caught on to a pattern. If Joker was inspired by Taxi Driver and The King of Comedy , would Folie à Deux be an homage to New York, New York , another film by Philips' idol, Martin Scorsese ?

New York, New York

Set just after World War II, the film tracks the volatile romance between a jazz saxophonist and an aspiring singer. As they navigate the ups and downs of their careers in the bustling music scene of New York City, their personal ambitions and conflicts reflect the rhythm and mood of the era.

'New York, New York' Was Very Ambitious for Martin Scorsese

Joker , a billion-dollar grosser that received 11 Academy Award nominations (including a win for Best Actor for Phoenix), was a clear homage to the work of Martin Scorsese. Perhaps too much of an homage. Many critics and viewers derided Phillips for unabashedly mimicking Scorsese's themes and visual language , especially when the allusions were treated as watered-down, karaoke versions of the cinematic master's films. Structurally and tonally, Joker is indebted to Taxi Driver 's nightmarish depiction of a disillusioned loner driven to violent outbursts. Arthur Fleck is enamored with a late-night talk show host , Murray Franklin ( Robert De Niro , in another obvious homage), and an unhealthy desire for public validation. This was the basis for The King of Comedy , the prescient satire on celebrity obsession and the glorification of viral figures.

Scorsese, who once considered directing Joker , appears to occupy creative real estate inside Todd Phillips' head. Even after the financial success and divisive discourse surrounding the film, he can't let go of Scorsese for his sequel. Phillips' follow-up to his Taxi Driver -inspired film will be a subversive take on the classic genre of the musical. In the 1970s, Scorsese followed up Taxi Driver with a subversive take on the classic genre of the musical with New York, New York . The 1977 film is a deep cut in the Scorsese catalog, as most casual fans would be remiss that he ever directed a musical. Starring Robert De Niro and Liza Minnelli as two ambitious musicians who become fateful lovers, New York, New York was a bold experiment by Scorsese . He combined his admiration for classic MGM musicals with New Hollywood sensibilities. While its production design and narrative scope evoke the work of Gene Kelly and Vincente Minnelli , the film possesses the same cynical tone and outlook on society as Taxi Driver .

This artistic collision manifested varying results. The film is a sluggish viewing experience, which is a rarity for a Scorsese film. Throughout its lengthy runtime, the deliberate artificiality of the film's set juxtaposed with the downbeat relationship between Jimmy Doyle (De Niro) and Francine Evans (Minnelli) was jarring to the senses. New York, New York is less of an artistic achievement and more of a fascinating text to analyze due to its imperfections . For as glaring as the imperfections are, they emerged out of sheer ambition on Scorsese's part . It was the kind of impressive creative swing that was commonplace during the 1970s. New York, New York , a commercial and critical flop, quickly became synonymous with the bloated excess and megalomania of New Hollywood , which spiraled out of control by the end of the decade, subsequently ushering in the commercialized blockbuster era of the 1980s.

'Joker: Folie à Deux' Puts a Dark Twist on the Musical Genre

If Scorsese sought to make an anti-musical, then Phillips is on the path to making an anti-sequel. Franchise filmmaking, particularly of the comic book variety, ostensibly prides itself on being commodified assets. To the chagrin of passionate cinephiles, sequels to comic book films generally resemble a factory-line product. Putting aside any thematic gripes, Joker excelled at separating itself from the glut of IP cinema thanks to its '70s-inspired visual aesthetic and an unflinching portrait of a psychotic anti-hero that resembled someone closer to our real world than a fantastical comic book universe. Despite the franchise backing of Joker , if there was any doubt over Phillips' creative freedom , look no further than the concept of his sequel. The film industry, as of late, has had a taboo relationship with the musical genre. At the end of 2023 and the beginning of 2024, three studio musicals were released in theaters : Wonka , The Color Purple , and Mean Girls . Each of their respective marketing campaigns concealed their musical DNA.

Jack Nicholson Was Allergic to His Joker Makeup in ‘Batman’

Based on its inaugural trailer, it appears that Joker: Folie à Deux will wear its musical badge on its sleeve . Arthur Fleck and Harley Quinn first lock eyes while she is in a chorus class. The two are shown dancing on an MGM-like soundstage, a ballroom theater, and the gritty streets of Gotham. "We use music to make us whole," an undisclosed character states in voiceover. This sentiment of lonely, fractured people converging for the love of performing arts is the core of many of the most beloved musicals in history . It is also a thread shared by Scorsese's "revisionist" musical , New York, New York . "I'm nobody," Harley says. "I haven't done anything with my life like you have," she admits to Arthur. Devoid of plot mechanics and expressed solely through emotions, Folie à Deux teases a perverse romance about two nefarious outcasts coming together for their mutual passion for performance . By some miracle, a trailer for a new Joker movie shares more artistic and thematic traits with An American in Paris than its previous DC predecessors.

How Will Gotham City Be Impacted by Joker and Harley Quinn?

In New York, New York , Jimmy and Francine, two dedicated artists, could never romantically coexist without compromising their music careers. Arthur Fleck and Harley Quinn's bond may be a match made in heaven, but the decaying society of Gotham City will suffer as a result. Keeping in the spirit of Martin Scorsese, it's safe to expect that Joker: Folie à Deux will be a dark and tormented remix of a genre associated with a jovial spirit. The duo of Arthur Fleck and Harley Quinn is no Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers .

We won't know for certain until the film's release in October, but all signs indicate that Todd Phillips is continuing to carry the mantle as Scorsese's proverbial tribute band in the stand-alone DC universe. While it's fair to criticize Phillips for his blatant acts of homage, he deserves credit for pushing the envelope . He could have easily coasted off the billion-dollar success of the first film and made something derivative. Instead, the director is crafting a bold expression of genre manipulation for a mass audience.

Me and my friend were huge fans of Gossip Girl so we thought we’d do the tour! We had Abby and she was amazing. Also we weren’t expecting clips from the series to be shown for each location we went to so that was super helpful, as we haven’t watched the show for years. All in all would definitely recommend!

Best bit of this tour - we were brought inside relevant buildings!! Maria showed great clips from the various movies as we passed on the bus.

The Evening

O.j. simpson died at 76.

Also, the U.S. is preparing for Iran to retaliate soon. Here’s the latest at the end of Thursday.

O.J. Simpson, in profile, in court wearing a suit and tie.

By Matthew Cullen

O.J. Simpson lived a life that made him one of the most famous people in America. He was a Heisman Trophy winner and a star for the Buffalo Bills, and he made fortunes as a Hollywood actor and a commercial pitchman — he was the first Black star of a national television advertising campaign. Then, in 1994, he was charged in the double murder of his former wife, Nicole Brown Simpson, and her friend, Ronald Goldman.

Simpson, who was 76, died yesterday at his home in Las Vegas. The cause was cancer, according to his family. You can read his full obituary here .

Simpson’s 1995 murder trial held up a cracked mirror to Black and white America and mesmerized the nation, which followed along on daily national television broadcasts . The jury acquitted him, but questions about his guilt or innocence never went away.

He was found liable for the deaths in a 1997 civil trial and was ordered to pay $33.5 million, although he paid little of the debt and struggled to stay out of trouble. He sold a book manuscript giving a “hypothetical” account of the murders, but after a public outcry, Ronald Goldman’s family secured the book rights.

In 2007 he was arrested after invading a Las Vegas hotel room and taking a trove of sports collectibles. Simpson was found guilty of armed robbery and kidnapping; he served nine years in prison and was released in 2017.

Look back: Here was The Times’s front-page story on the day Simpson was acquitted.

The U.S. is preparing for Iran to retaliate soon

The top U.S. military commander for the Middle East arrived in Israel today to coordinate with the Israeli military ahead of an expected attack by Iran .

Despite recent friction, President Biden said U.S. support for Israel was “ironclad,” and he warned that Iran was threatening a “significant” attack. Over the last 10 days, Iran’s leaders have repeatedly vowed to punish Israel for a strike that killed several senior Iranian commanders in Syria.

In other news from the region, Samantha Power, the head of U.S.A.I.D., told U.S. lawmakers that a famine was underway in northern Gaza.

Prosecutors said Ohtani’s interpreter stole $16 million

Federal prosecutors in California today charged Ippei Mizuhara, the former interpreter for the baseball superstar Shohei Ohtani, with bank fraud. The authorities accused Mizuhara of orchestrating a sprawling scheme over years to steal $16 million of Ohtani’s money to feed a gambling addiction .

The prosecutors said that the money had been taken from an account where Ohtani’s baseball salary was paid, and that there was no evidence that Ohtani had authorized the withdrawals. The authorities added that there was no indication that Mizuhara had bet on baseball.

The global stockpile of cholera vaccine has run dry

Seventeen countries have recently seen cholera outbreaks, driven by climate change and conflict. Doses of cholera vaccine are being given to patients as fast as they are produced, and the global stockpile has run completely dry .

The only company that currently makes the vaccine has been working at a pace that experts describe as “heroic” to expand production. And three new vaccine makers are setting up production lines. Yet the supply this year will be, at best, a quarter of what is needed.

In other vaccine news, a new shot appears to offer strong protection against dengue fever but isn’t being made fast enough to stop a huge outbreak sweeping Latin America.

ONE LAST THING

The joys and challenges of caring for an octopus.

Cal Clifford wanted an octopus since he was 3 years old. Every year, he would ask for one; and every year his parents would get him octopus toys, clothes or a trip to the aquarium. Then last year, on Cal’s ninth birthday, he finally was given a real pet octopus. He named it Terrance .

Cal and his family quickly came to adore the octopus, who turned out to be quite social, but what they didn't know was that Terrance was a female. She laid 50 eggs, forcing the family to scramble to keep the hatchlings alive and to find them homes.

Have a supportive evening.

How Cate Blanchett's Love for Escape from New York Landed Her Role in Borderlands

Borderland's star Cate Blanchett pivot to Eli Roth's action film is a nod to her love of Escape From New York.

  • Cate Blanchett brings a unique blend of grace and grit to her role in Borderlands , influenced by her love for the cult classic Escape From New York .
  • Director Eli Roth praises Blanchett's versatility in physically demanding scenes, including wielding flamethrowers and twirling guns with finesse.
  • The ensemble cast of Borderlands , led by Blanchett and including Jack Black and Kevin Hart, promises a high-energy space adventure narrative.

Cate Blanchett , better known for her intricate roles in films such as Blue Jasmine and Carol , will show a drastically different side of her acting prowess in Eli Roth’s adaptation of the sci-fi action video game Borderlands . Blanchett's venture into the action genre is not just a career pivot but a nod to her personal love for cinematic thrillers, specifically the cult classic Escape From New York . In an interview with Empire , Roth shared:

“ She loves Escape From New York. It’s her favourite movie. But nobody would know that because why would you ask her about Escape From New York when you’re interviewing her about Lydia Tár?”

Borderlands

In Borderlands , Blanchett steps into the shoes of Lilith, a character whose abilities demand a blend of grace and grit reminiscent of the most iconic action heroes. Her affinity for Escape From New York influenced her character portrayal, blending her known depth with newfound dynamism.

Roth's enthusiasm for the project is evident. He focuses on Blanchett’s capabilities not just in dramatic roles but in physically demanding scenes that have her wielding flamethrowers and twirling guns with the finesse of a seasoned action star. He hinted at the spectacle of seeing Blanchett in such an uncharacteristically rugged avatar. Read Roth's comment below:

“You’ve seen [her] twirling the baton [in Tár], but you haven’t seen her twirling guns behind her back. She’s a master at it. A big part of the fun of the movie is watching it and thinking, ‘I can’t believe they all did this crazy stuff.’ Cate with a flame-thrower — a real flame-thrower — come on! That’s pretty badass.”

Borderlands' ensemble cast goes for a galactic treasure hunt.

Director Eli Roth, excited about reuniting Blanchett with Jack Black (who voices the anarchic android Claptrap), sees this film as an opportunity to combine familiar chemistry with unexpected roles. Their previous collaboration in the 2018 family film The House With A Clock In Its Walls proved their dynamic range, and Borderlands promises to push this to new heights.

Borderlands sees Blanchett's Lilith leading a band of outlaws through interstellar escapades to uncover hidden treasures on a distant planet. Aside from Jack Black's android Claptrap, the ensemble cast also includes Kevin Hart as Roland and Jamie Lee Curtis as Tannis. With additional performances by Florian Munteanu, Haley Bennett, and Édgar Ramírez, the film is gearing up to deliver a high-energy narrative reminiscent of ensemble-driven, space adventure films.

20 Strongest Vault Hunters in the Borderlands Franchise

The hype around Borderlands has been building , fueled by a trailer released in February that hinted at a tone similar to that of Guardians of the Galaxy , mixing humor with action-packed sequences set against a cosmic backdrop. The development of the film has been a subject of considerable interest, especially after it underwent reshoots led by Tim Miller, known for his work on Deadpool . This change in direction came as Eli Roth departed to work on his horror project, Thanksgiving .

Borderlands is set to premiere on August 9, 2024.

NEW YORK (AP) — The New York Philharmonic will give five concerts in China this summer in what it says will be first visit to the mainland by a U.S. orchestra since 2019.

Outgoing music director Jaap van Zweden will conduct the performances at Guangzhou, Nanjing and Shanghai from June 27 to July 3, the orchestra said Thursday. Baritone Thomas Hampson will join as a soloist in Guangzhou and Shanghai.

Van Zweden’s final concert with the orchestra as music director will be at Vail, Colorado, on July 20.

Van Zweden succeeded Alan Gilbert as music director in the 2018-19 season. He announced in September 2021 that the 2023-24 season will be his last. Gustavo Dudamel will take over but will not start until 2026-27.

Van Zweden will become music director of the Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France starting in 2026-27.
