It's been harder to accumulate miles but this airline has the best reward redemption rate

flight travel synonyms

Airline reward tickets are getting more expensive. While cash fares for flights are rising slower than inflation, a new report from IdeaWorksCompany, a consultancy focusing on ancillary airline revenue, shows that reward redemptions are getting even pricier than paid-for tickets.

According to the analysis, airline reward ticket prices have increased 28% on average in the last five years, while the Consumer Price Index rose 21% over that same period.

The survey was based on 600 fare queries at six different U.S. airlines.

According to IdeaWorksCompany:

  • Southwest Airlines has the best reward redemption rate at 14,484 miles per flight on average.
  • United Airlines has the most expensive reward tickets, averaging 30,460 miles per flight.

“Consumers can enjoy the perks of reward travel more rapidly on Southwest,” IdeaWorksCompany said in a statement. “The airline does have an inherent advantage because it focuses on short- and medium-haul routes and frequent flights. Reward prices tend to be lower for shorter flights and demand is more readily met with more flights.”

According to the IdeaWorksCompany analysis, the rise of basic economy tickets has made it more difficult for cost-conscious travelers to accrue airline points or miles. Most carriers now restrict the reward earnings on their cheapest tickets, which means low-fare seekers are less likely to be able to redeem future travel.

Earning points through credit card spending has also disrupted the airline reward ecosystem.

“When frequent flyer programs appeared in the 1980s, buying a ticket on an airline was the only way to accrue miles. The industry’s embrace of co-branded credit cards has changed this outcome,” the report said. “Now the majority of mileage accrual originates from partner transactions and the minority is generated flying the airline. Financial disclosures made by American, Delta, and United during 2020 reveal this change. Now these airlines are earning billions from the revenue provided by their bank partners.”

As a result, the report said that travelers need to have an airline’s credit card to get the maximum benefit from its frequent flyer program.

Flight Attendants Reveal What's in Their Travel Toiletry Bags — Beauty Finds Start at $9

Take a rare peek inside the toiletry bags of 10 longtime flight attendants.

Travel + Leisure / Tyler Roeland

When you're getting ready for a trip — particularly if you're trying to pack light — no one knows how to fine-tune a packing list better than a flight attendant . After all, they need to be prepared for the flight and the layovers, delays, and overnight stays that come with the job. Odds are, the items that they pack work just as hard as they do, which is why we turn to them for the best recommendations. And today, we're taking a peek into what's inside of their toiletry bags.

Whether it’s your first flight or your 500th, you can trust that flight attendants know a thing or two about what you can add to your bag to make your trip even better. Here, you'll find some of the personal care items that they've deemed must-packs for their toiletry bags, ranging from full-coverage sunscreen to ultra-hydrating moisturizers . Caution: You'll most likely want to add these to your cart immediately (or at least, before your next trip).

CeraVe AM Facial Moisturizing Lotion With SPF

Like we mentioned before, cabin crew members rely on multitasking products to streamline their packing lists. So, it's no surprise that Quinn Hanneken , who has been a flight attendant for eight years, uses CeraVe's AM Facial Moisture to save precious toiletry bag space. The two-in-one skincare product doubles as your moisturizer and sunscreen with its ceramide-rich formula and SPF 30 protection. In fact, the moisturizer combines three types of ceramides, hyaluronic acid, and niacinamide (which possesses excellent redness-reducing and skin tone-balancing benefits).

Skin Aesthetics Ultra Hydrating Facial Moisturizer

For Crystal Romo , who has been a flight attendant for five years, her go-to face moisturizer is an Amazon-favorite: the Skin Aesthetics Ultra Hydrating Facial Moisturizer, a K-beauty product that is designed to not only hydrate the skin, but also infuse it with brightening vitamin C, wrinkle-reducing collagen, line-plumping hyaluronic acid, soothing aloe vera, and moisturizing argan oil. “This under-$10 moisturizer is amazing," she raves. "It is super hydrating, comforting, and so inexpensive. Flying around constantly really dries out the skin, and [applying] this moisturizer in the morning or end of day feels like heaven. I have purchased it six times so far."

Black Girl Magic Sunscreen

Not every sunscreen is made equally, and it's not uncommon for some formulas to leave an unflattering and hard-to-rub-in white cast on darker skin tones. Enter: Black Girl Magic Sunscreen, which comes recommended by Lea McIntyre , who has been a flight attendant for six years. "I use Black Girl Magic Sunscreen because flying at 30,000 feet in the sky gives you an equivalent to about 20 minutes in a UVA tanning bed," she says. Designed with melanin-rich skin in mind, the formula offers robust, long-lasting protection against UVA and UVB rays without a dreaded white cast — all while blanketing the skin in a hydrating blend of jojoba, cacao, and avocado oils.

Aquaphor Healing Ointment

“Flying is incredibly dehydrating and my lips (including everything else) get very dried out," flight attendant of seven years Paige Carabello explains. "Aquaphor seems to be the only thing that really helps." Luckily, the healing ointment comes in a travel-friendly tube and can be used from head-to-toe to combat dryness. In addition to her trusty Aquaphor, Carabello also always packs a shower cap and dry shampoo because "you’d be surprised how damaging washing your hair in different hotels can be."

La Roche Posay Anthelios Melt-In Milk Sunscreen for Face and Body Sunscreen SPF 100

“My most essential product that I never leave without, my holy grail, is SPF," Candace Keeton , who has been a flight attendant for almost two years, says. She also notes, "Unfortunately, compared to the general public, flight attendants and pilots are more at risk for melanoma and other skin cancers due to UV radiation from sun exposure." So, to keep her face and body protected from the sun's UV rays, she turns to the La Roche Posay Anthelios Melt-In Milk Sunscreen SPF 100, a two-in-one formula that ensures full-body coverage from UVA/UVB rays while also infusing the skin with antioxidants to help reverse already-present sun damage.

Pacifica Beauty Glow Baby Hydrodew Moisture Gel

Does flying always leave you with an oily complexion? Flight attendant Teeara Ida can relate. In fact, she tells Travel + Leisure, "I used to have oily skin, but once I became a flight attendant, I noticed the altitude began to dry out my skin, causing my skin to need more moisture." Thankfully, she discovered the Pacifica Beauty Glow Baby Hydrodew Moisture Gel, which locks in hydration while giving the skin a radiance-boosting dose of vitamin C, niacinamide, and other brightening and smoothing ingredients. She adds that she'll pair it with the Sweet July Irie Power Face Oil , noting that the combo "gives my skin a glow without the product feeling heavy on the skin."

Hero Cosmetics Mighty Patch for Tired Eyes

Being a passenger on a plane is tiring enough — and we can only imagine how grueling the experience must be for the cabin crew. That's why Jasmine Khadija , who has been a flight attendant for two years, always prioritizes self-care. "After checking into our layovers, it’s important to take care of yourself," she shares. "My routine is: eat, shower, skincare, pack, get ready for the next day, and unwind." Hero Cosmetics' Might Patches for Tired Eyes "are vital" during her skincare phase, and she even quips that they turn "the bags under my eyes from black garbage bags to designer bags" with their brightening, refreshing, and hydrating ingredients.

It’s a 10 Miracle Leave-in Hair Product

A good hair day isn't always guaranteed when you're staying in a hotel, which is why flight attendant of 10 years Marie Harvis arrives at her destination prepared with her go-to It's a 10 Miracle Leave-in. Whether she's using her own shampoo or the hotel's shampoo, the product "helps keep my hair looking healthier and keep it looking good when I have limited hair tool options on my layovers," she explains, adding that "the [hotel] blow dryers are usually pretty awful, and it really helps to protect it and keep some life in it when I'm rushing to get ready in a new city." The all-in-one product acts as detangler, frizz-fighter, shine-booster, softness-enhancer, color-preserver, heat protectant, split end-delayer, and strand-strengthener — so it's basically like a hair salon in a bottle.

Kiehl’s Ultra Facial Cream

Flight attendants like Elise Tucker, who has been a cabin crew member for eight years, hope that "hydration, hydration, hydration" will be your main travel beauty takeaway. When it comes to quenching and preventing dryness on the go, she relies on Kiehl's Ultra Facial Cream, which is available in a variety of travel-friendly sizes. "Because the air is so dry on the plane, sometimes when I pack my skin with too many skincare products, my makeup will either separate or move on the plane," she explains. "It took a while to find the right products for my skin, especially as I’m getting older. So when I’m flying, I try to keep it as simple as possible."

This Kiehl's moisturizer is an all-star because it's intended to keep your skin hydrated for up to 72 hours, and it's packed with skin barrier-strengthening ceramides, squalene, and the brand's intensely conditioning glacial glycoprotein that works overtime to lock in hydration. Plus, it leaves the skin looking balanced and brighter, so it takes the place of your serum if you're limited on space.

Goop 15% Glycolic Acid Peel Pack

After being a flight attendant for 18 years, Julie Ongaro can confidently say that her "absolute pet peeve [when] traveling is my skin drying out." Because she "could not possibly drink enough water with our flight schedule," she turns to Goop's Overnight Glycolic Acid Peel (a travel-friendly, leave-on treatment that reduces the look of pores, fine lines, wrinkles, and discoloration while you sleep) to keep her skin "glowing and hydrated" after long travel days. For extra hydration, she follows up with the Goop All-In-One Super Nutrient Face Oil and notes that "after each face wash, I use Biologique Recherche P50 1970 toner , it makes such a difference and then apply your serum and creams after."

Summer travel could be extra chaotic as United pilots take unpaid leave and Boeing issues pile up

  • United Airlines has asked its pilots to take unpaid leave this summer and possibly into the fall.
  • Across airlines, summer fliers may see disrupted flight schedules and pricier tickets.
  • In June, 2.5 million passengers went through US security checkpoints.

Insider Today

In an early blow to summer travel, United Airlines has asked its pilots to take an unpaid leave next month, citing delayed aircraft deliveries from Boeing.

In a statement to CNBC , United confirmed the "voluntary, unpaid time off."

In a note sent to pilots on Friday, the United chapter of the Air Line Pilots Association wrote that the union expects the airline to extend the unpaid leave offer into this summer "and potentially into the fall."

United employed 13,831 pilots in 2022, per the company's most recent data .

The union note on Friday said flight forecasts have been "significantly reduced" due to changes to United's Boeing 787 and 737 deliveries and that the airline expects the issues to impact other fleets.

This summer was scheduled to be United's busiest in a decade. In January, the company said it would add over 100 daily departures from American hubs and announced its largest trans-Atlantic schedule.

Related stories

The specific changes to United's summer flight lineup were not immediately available. The company did not respond to a request for comment from Business Insider sent outside normal business hours.

Boeing's troubles could hurt other airlines' passengers this summer. Fliers may see rescheduled flights as airlines pull planes out of service and revamp schedules to account for new plane delays. Prices may go up, too: the CEO of Ryanair, which only flies Boeing 737s, said last month that ticket prices may rise 10% because the company won't have all the planes it ordered on time.

Summer is one of the busiest periods for American carriers. June 2023 saw an average of 2.56 million passengers per day passing through Transportation Security Administration checkpoints, making it the busiest month at US airports since July 2019.

Boeing's ills hit airlines across the world

United and other airlines, including Southwest Airlines and Ryanair, are scrambling to work with reduced deliveries from Boeing, as the US plane manufacturer focuses on fixing safety lapses after the January 5 flight Alaska Airlines door blowout accident . Boeing's 737 planes are most commonly used on domestic routes.

"It's a simple matter of supply and demand," aviation analyst Richard Aboulafia told BI last month . "With new aircraft production heavily constrained, especially at Boeing, and a limited number of older aircraft that can be kept longer in service, and continued very strong demand, prices are likely to increase."

Scott Kirby, the CEO of United, has been vocal about his frustrations with Boeing and in January said he is looking to change the planes the company orders in the future. New planes could alleviate United's problems in future years, but they would not be delivered in time for this summer's travel rush.

The Boeing plane delay comes amid turmoil for United's operations. Last week, the US Federal Aviation Administration said it was increasing scrutiny of United to ensure the airline's compliance with safety regulations . The oversight follows a series of safety incidents in the last month alone, including an overflowing toilet on a flight from Frankfurt, a missing external panel in a plane that landed in Oregon, and a tire lost after takeoff on a flight from San Francisco to Japan.

Last month, over 1,000 flights were delayed or cancelled — from a combination of weather, technology issues, and airspace constraints — disrupting spring break travel plans around the US.

Northeast earthquake

Rare 4.8 magnitude quake rattles Northeast

By Elise Hammond , Leinz Vales and Matt Meyer , CNN

Northeast earthquake is disrupting air travel

From CNN's Greg Wallace

A 4.8 magnitude earthquake in the Northeast is impacting air travel.

The Federal Aviation Administration said flights to the New York Kennedy, Philadelphia, Baltimore, and Newark airports were being held.

The air traffic control tower at Newark Liberty airport is being evacuated, a controller said in a radio transmission after the earthquake. That meant the flights were being held while controllers moved to an alternate location.

"Nobody's going to go anywhere for the time being," a controller said over the radio frequency.

The runways were in the process of being inspected for damage. Shortly after the earthquake, controllers at LaGuardia were still clearing flights for departure there.

Federal Aviation Administration spokesperson Jeannie Shiffer calls the earthquake’s impact on air travel a “rapidly evolving situation.”

FAA will have to inspect runways at New York’s JFK and Newark airports before operations can resume.

No reports of damage in Rockland County following quake, city official says

From CNN staff

There are no reports of damage in New York’s Rockland County following this morning’s earthquake, according to a statement from the county's executive Ed Day.

Day urged residents to remain calm and said the quake was felt in Albany, through the Lower Hudson Valley, and in New York City.

“So far there are no reports of any damage, but the County is still assessing the impact and working with Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory research center and the State of New York to gather more information and will publicize as appropriate,” he said.

“As aftershocks are common following earthquakes, residents are advised to stay alert and be prepared for any further seismic activity,” Day added.

A 4.8 magnitude earthquake rattles Northeast cities, USGS says

A preliminary 4.8 magnitude earthquake rattled parts of New York City, Philadelphia and Washington, DC, according to the data from the US Geological Survey.

The epicenter, which occurred at 10:23 a.m. ET, was just northeast of Lebanon, New Jersey, less than 50 miles west of New York City.

The light quake was shallow, just below the surface at a depth of 5 kilometers, which made it easier for residents in affected areas to feel the shaking.

The light shaking would be unlikely to cause damage,  according initial data indications  from the USGS. Initial reports indicated a 4.8 magnitude quake, but that was revised to 4.7 before being adjusted back to 4.8. This could change again as more data is reviewed.

UConn Men's Basketball Faces Travel Issues En Route to Final Four in Phoenix

  • Author: Tom Dierberger

In this story:

The UConn men's basketball team punched its ticket to the Final Four without much trouble, handily defeating Stetson, Northwestern, San Diego State and Illinois to win the East Region.

Actually traveling to the Final Four in Phoenix, however, posed a challenge for coach Dan Hurley and the Huskies.

CBS Sports' Matt Norlander reported Wednesday the Huskies' original flight to Phoenix was scheduled to leave Wednesday at 6 p.m. ET, but their plane arriving from Kansas City had logistical and mechanical issues that forced a delay.

Per Norlander, the crew flying the plane from Kansas City would be over their FAA (Federal Aviation Administration) hours and can't fly the team to Arizona. UConn would have to wait until 10 a.m. ET on Thursday to fly on that plane.

ESPN's Pete Thamel reported later Wednesday that the Huskies found a solution—a flight expected to leave the East Coast around 11:30 p.m. ET Wednesday. UConn will arrive in Phoenix around 2 a.m. ET Thursday.

Was told that UConn’s men’s team appears to have a solution to its travel woes getting to Arizona. A flight is expected to leave around 11:30 tonight. They’ll get in around 2 a.m. As @MattNorlander noted, there’s been mechanical/crew issues for the Huskies. — Pete Thamel (@PeteThamel) April 4, 2024

While the Huskies waited in limbo for an available flight, the other three Final Four teams—Alabama, Purdue and NC State—already arrived in Phoenix.

UConn, the tournament's No. 1 overall seed, is set to face No. 4 seed Alabama in the national semifinals on Saturday at State Farm Stadium.

Earthquake snarls air and train travel in the New York City area

By Megan Cerullo

Edited By Aimee Picchi

Updated on: April 5, 2024 / 4:36 PM EDT / CBS News

An  earthquake  centered in New Jersey and felt across the New York City region on Friday disrupted air and rail travel, with ground stoppages at airports in the New York City area and delays in train service.

Travel operations were momentarily halted Friday morning with ground stoppages at John F. Kennedy International Airport in Queens and at Newark Liberty International Airport in Newark, New Jersey, with crews working to resume normal air traffic operations. By early afternoon, the ground stoppage at JFK had been lifted.

Arriving and departing flights in Newark also resumed in the afternoon, but delays averaged roughly two hours,  according  to the Federal Aviation Administration.

The earthquake, which occurred roughly 10:20 a.m. Eastern time, had either a 4.7 or 4.8 magnitude and was centered near Whitehouse Station, New Jersey, 40 miles west of New York City,  according to the United States Geological Survey.

Newark airport is experiencing average departure delays of 43 minutes, according to flight tracking website FlightAware. Inbound aircraft that are already airborne are delayed by about an hour. Inbound flights that have not yet taken off are being held until 12:30 p.m., according to the site.

Flights in and out of LaGuardia airport in Queens were also delayed, likely in order for airport staff to check for damage to the airport and runways and clear away any debris.

The ground stoppages and delays are not expected to last long.

Additionally, New Jersey Transit said it's experiencing up to 20-minute delays across its entire rail service system, in both directions. NJ Transit said it's inspecting a bridge for damage to ensure train travel is safe.

—CBS News' Kris Van Cleave contributed reporting.

High-flying UConn men’s basketball team grounded by plane trouble on way to Final Four

UConn guard Solomon Ball (1) drives to the net with pressure from Illinois forward Coleman Hawkins (33).

The UConn men’s basketball team was happy not to need a plane to get through the first four games of the NCAA Tournament, playing in Brooklyn and Boston.

But with the Final Four tipping off Saturday in Glendale, Ariz., the Huskies were grounded in Connecticut on Wednesday night.

The plane they were supposed to take to Arizona experienced mechanical issues getting to the East Coast. The flight was scheduled to leave at about 6 p.m. Eastern time from Bradley International Airport near Hartford, Conn., but a mechanical issue kept the plane they were supposed to use from arriving at Bradley, the school said.

The NCAA said in a statement that it worked with UConn and a charter company to develop several alternatives, and the Huskies are expected to be in the air by about 11:30 p.m. and land in Phoenix around 1:30 a.m. local time.

NCAA statement: Due to mechanical issues with the original aircraft, UConn men’s basketball team is experiencing a delay and is now projected to depart at approximately 11:30 p.m. ET. In conjunction with the school and charter airlines, the NCAA worked to develop several options… — John Fanta (@John_Fanta) April 4, 2024

“We are very disappointed that UConn will arrive later than anticipated and it’s unfortunate the team’s travel experience has been impacted,” the NCAA said.

The team was back on campus, about 50 minutes from the airport, waiting for the issue to be resolved, a school spokesman said.

The travel problems were first reported to Matt Norlander of CBS Sports , who was told of the issue by coach Dan Hurley.

BREAKING: UConn does not have a plane to fly to Arizona at the moment, Dan Hurley tells @CBSSports . Was supposed to take off at 6 ET, logistical/mechanical issues with the plane coming in from Kansas City forced significant delays. NCAA handles all trace for NCAAT. The Huskies have not been on a plane since just after their March 6 game with Marquette, when they had to spend an extra day in Milwaukee because of a cancelled flight.

The Huskies took buses to the Big East Tournament in Manhattan, the first two rounds of the NCAA Tournament in Brooklyn and the East Regional in Boston.

No. 1 seed UConn is scheduled to play fourth-seeded Alabama at 8:49 p.m. Saturday night. Alabama, as well as Purdue and N.C. State, have already arrived in Arizona.
