How to get to Saint Tropez

Situated on the inner shoreline of Cote D’Azur in the South of France, this tropical paradise is hidden away on a secluded peninsula. Due to which, you may need to spend a couple hours more to get there (but it will be worth it).

The closest airport from Saint Tropez is La Mole, which is about 1 hour away (approximately 17 km) from this festive fishing village. La Mole is a local airport that caters to chartered flights and helicopters from Nice. You will also find a few regular flights here between May and October.

If you’re looking for a more picturesque way to get here, then we suggest flying into Nice (Nice Cote d’Azur airport) or Marseille Provence (Marseille Provence airport). With a drive time of 1 hour and 2 hours (respectively) from Saint Tropez both these places offer simplified access into this shore-side town.

The advantage here is that you get to witness the magical azure waters by sailing to Saint Tropez from Nice. You can charter a boat or book yourself onto a sharing boat between May and September to get here in 2.30 hours. You can also choose public transport from Nice and Marseille, for a more pocket-friendly option.

Driving to Saint Tropez gives you the advantage of having your own transport within the fishing village. A much-required convenience if you wish to visit various spots, stunning landmarks and day trips from Saint Tropez at your whim.

However, your journey may be slowed down from May to October owing to traffic-jams from the crowds coming in during peak season.

If Saint Tropez is part of a European road-trip then driving can be a great option. You can get on a ferry that docks in Bilbao, Spain and drive 9 hours while soaking in dreamy sights.

You can hop on a bus for a 3-hour ride to Saint Raphael from Nice Cote d’Azur airport. From Saint Raphael you can either self-drive or book a taxi, which will take you another 1 hour to Saint Tropez.

In season time (May to September), you can take a bus from Marseille airport to Aix-en-Provence and change at Luc le Cannet to get to Saint Tropez.

During the off-peak months, you can get on a bus to Toulon and change there to get to Saint Tropez.

What to expect in Saint Tropez

Before we get into the fabulous Saint Tropez attractions, let’s take a look at a few basics that can make your vacation easier.

French is the main language used in Saint Tropez. While it not vehemently important to be fluent in French, it won’t hurt to brush up on your “hello’s, goodbye’s and thank you’s”. The locals are always smiling and warm, and they always appreciate the little effort taken.

ATM and Money exchange:

Currency used: Euro’s (€)

Probably the easiest way to withdraw Euro’s are ATM’s. However, good things always come with a price, and in this case it’s a 3% (depending on your bank, we suggest speaking to them) foreign-transaction fee charged by your bank.

You can also chose to use your Visa and MasterCard credit cards to pay at hotels and restaurants, another convenient way to pay but with the cost of an added foreign-transaction fee.

It is important to always have some cash on you, since a few St Tropez hotels and restaurants may not accept card.

We suggest opting for a self-load Forex/Currency card, where you can load up a specified amount of Euro’s that can be withdrawn/swiped with no additional transaction cost at most hotels, clubs and restaurants.

Our pick for exchanging your currency in Saint Tropez are Exchange bureaus . These often offer better rates than banks and are also a speedier way to exchange money.

Bargaining:

While shopping in St Tropez it’s important not to haggle. It is considered rude to bargain in France, unless, of course you’re at a flea market.

With a 15% service charge added to your bill, it is not imperative to leave a hefty tip at bars, restaurants and hotels. You could leave €1 or €2 as an extra bonus if you’re really happy though. This doesn’t however apply to Taxi’s, where you’re expected to tip 10-15% of your bill amount to the driver.

How to get around Saint Tropez

Having a self-driven vehicle becomes a boon at this point, since most of the things to do in St Tropez are over 5 km’s from each other. Sure, the traffic may get a little rough on some days but the convenience of having transport at your disposal is a true luxury.

You could even rent a bike or hike/walk your way through Saint Tropez in you’re that kind of an explorer. You will come across quite a few gorgeous seaside sights while walking here (some of which may not be accessible by car).

From April to first week of September Saint Tropez offers a bus service from the bus station, along with a free minibus from the town center.

The best time to visit Saint Tropez

The best months to visit this fishing village are from April to October. Consider these peak-seasons and expect quite a few vacationers to be present though.

If the white-sand beaches and waters are what attract you and sea-activities like surfing and diving strike your fancy then July and August are your best bets.

If you’re one to avoid the crowds, then the winters are the perfect time for you to visit. With day temperatures around 50 F and nights that barely come to 0 F, you will find this a secluded haven for a quiet getaway.

Shopping in St Tropez:

We’d suggest packing in an extendable bag or carrying a foldable duffle when visiting Saint Tropez. While the crystal waters and white-sand beaches are the most popular Saint Tropez attractions, this part of the French Riviera is considered a shopping paradise.

While shopping in St Tropez you can find right from luxury brands (owing to the celebrity tourists) to local artists with unique boutiques. We can’t possibly name every shop in Saint Tropez (the list will be very long!), but here are a few of our favorites:

Summer fun:

You can rent Kayaks and/or Paddle boards and set-forth to explore the waters around Saint Tropez with your friends and family.

You can rent a cycle or chose to walk and get on one of the numerous cycling/hiking trails in Saint Tropez. We think the captivating views are better reached on cycles or on foot.

15 Best Things to Do in Saint-Tropez (France)

The personality and fame of Saint-Tropez are far bigger than the place itself.

It’s not unkind to say that the resort isn’t more than a village, and so isn’t jam-packed with things to do.

In the end though, the allure of Saint-Tropez rests is its glamour, undimmed since its star first rose more than 60 years ago.

It’s all about being here, and being seen to be here, and being able to tell everyone that you’ve been here.

And if you are seduced by the decadence then feel free to splurge on designer clothing and dine at unapologetically expensive restaurants.

Or maybe remind yourself that the best things in life are free when you feel the rush of the Mistral or you see that unique light that spurred the post-impressionists to pick up their brushes.

Lets explore the best things to do in Saint-Tropez :

1. L’Annonciade

L'Annonciade

If you need  proof that Saint-Tropez was at the vanguard of art at the turn of the 20th century you’ll find it in this converted 16th-century chapel, away from the chaos of the port.

We start with Paul Signac, the pointillist artist who was enchanted by the light in Saint-Tropez in 1892 and invited friends like Matisse, Derain, Cross and Marquet to join him.

Several works by Signac are on show, as are six by Henri Matisse and many more by the likes of Braque, Vallotton, Delaunay and Bonnard.

The collection concentrates on the early-modern movements from the 1890s onwards, like pointillism, fauvism and Les Nabis.

2. Citadelle de Saint-Tropez

Citadelle de Saint-Tropez

East of Saint-Tropez and rising above Pointe de Cimetière is an early-17th-century fortress.

With moats and counterscarps on a hexagonal plan it was established after the French Wars of Religion as a key defence between Toulon and Antibes, guarding what was then a frontier.

The fortress  was called into action pretty quickly, withstanding an attack by 21 Spanish galleons in 1637. The maze-like interiors are the evocative setting for a Maritime Museum, which has been refurbished in the last few years and has antique globes, model ships, maps, canons and firsthand accounts from 17th-century officers and sailors.

3. Saint-Tropez Harbour

Saint-Tropez Harbour

If you’re put off by the overpriced bars, restaurants and posh fashion houses, at least you won’t have to pay to soak up Saint-Tropez’ opulent ambience.

A couple of streets in from the water are unpretentious joints selling crêpes and soft drinks, which definitely beats €10 for a pastis on the quay! Take a stroll along the Jean Réveille jetty that keeps the Mediterranean out, look back awestruck at the yachts and bask in the light and ochre hues that wowed the early-modern painters more than a century ago.

The quayside is full of painters trying to capture this beauty, and you might like to browse their work for a souvenir.

4. Plage de l’Escalet

Plage de l'Escalet

Safe in a recess between Cap Camarat and Cap Taillat, Plage de l’Escalet is in fact a chain of three beaches with a blend of sand and pebbles, each separated from the next by rounded rocks.

The beach closest to the car park fills up quickly in the summer, but if you’re patient enough to walk around the bay the crowd starts to thin a little.

Thanks to the headlands these shimmering turquoise waters are unaffected by the Mistral or sea currents, and so are unbeatable for snorkelling and bathing.

5. Musée de la Gendarmerie et du Cinéma

Musée de la Gendarmerie et du Cinéma

If the name of this attraction sounds oddly specific, it’s because the facade of Saint-Tropez’ police station has starred in numerous films.

It was used many times as an establishing shot by the director Jean Girault for his Gendarme films, starting with the classic comedy Le Gendarme de Saint-Tropez with Louis de Funès . Obviously  this single reference might be a bit tenuous, so the museum also aims to tap into Saint-Tropez’ silver screen allure with interactive exhibits and movie memorabilia.

The film that started it all was And God Created Woman in 1956, starring Brigitte Bardot.

6. Plage de Pampelonne

Plage de Pampelonne

Five kilometres of fine white sand and warm waters, Plage de Pampelonne is easily the longest beach near Saint-Tropez and has more than a sprinkle of stardust.

The beach has been an institution since 1955 and is just another of those things you have to do, to get the photos and be able to tell your friends where you’ve been.

There are beach clubs all along the shore, where you’ll need to reserve a sun lounger, and a shuttle bus will deliver you here from the centre resort.

That’s unless you’ve got a private yacht, chauffeur or helicopter as many of your fellow bathers will!

7. Marché de Saint-Tropez

Marché de Saint-Tropez

On Tuesday and Saturday mornings in summer as many as 120 stallholders set up shop in the shade of the plane trees on Place des Lices, a few steps from the harbour.

Come for pastries, fresh fruit and vegetables, charcuterie, fish, seafood, artisanal products, flowers, clothes, Provençal herbs, kitchen utensils, vintage posters and much more besides.

As with the best French markets rotisserie chicken and other freshly-made fare will be sure to whet your appetite.

In winter there’s still a market here on Place des Lices, only it’s a little smaller outside the tourist season.

8. Chapelle Sainte-Anne

Chapelle Sainte-Anne

Completed in 1618, Chapelle Saint-Anne hides in a conifer grove on Mont Pécoulet, a hill behind Saint-Tropez.

In the 19th century long-distance sailors would ride up to this spot to seek protection from St.

Anne before departing.

The chapel is in a very pretty spot, blessed with vistas of the resort and the azure sea, but also appears in the annals of pop culture.

Mick and Bianca Jagger were married here in 1971, and guests included Paul and Linda McCartney, Eric Clapton and Ringo Starr.

9. Maison des Papillons

Maison des Papillons

This museum has been set up by Dany Lartigue, the grandson of André Messager, who managed the French Opera and counted cultural giants like Gabriel Fauré and Claude Debussy as his friends.

Lartigue has spent a lifetime gathering 35,000 butterfly specimens, which are presented to the public in the family home in the centre of Saint-Tropez.

In these rooms you can see every single French butterfly species, as well as exotic specimens from the Amazon and  the Solomon Islands.

There’s a two-pronged appeal about the museum; in its entomological value, but also the artful way that the butterflies are arranged.

10. Sentier du Littoral

Sentier du Littoral

It’s reassuring how, despite what must have been a great temptation to allow a free-for-all, so much of the coastline around Saint-Tropez remains undeveloped.

You’ll see for yourself on the Sentier du Littoral, a trail granting you access to more than 40 kilometres of coastline all the way from Saint Tropez to Cap Taillat.

As you push on next to the sea, you’ll journey over high cliffs and climb pine and juniper-flecked limestone outcrops with steps grooved into the rock.

And if you remember to bring your swim stuff you won’t be short of opportunities for dips in transparent rock pools.

11. Nautical Sport

Nautical Sport

On the little knot of streets of Saint-Tropez you’ll encounter not only refined restaurants, high-end fashion emporia, eye-wateringly expensive real estate agents but also yacht charter companies.

If you have a few thousand Euros burning a hole in your pocket you can hire a crewed or bareboat yacht for a week and live in the lap of luxury, tacking to the local beaches as you please.

There’s sailing of a different kind during the Violes de Saint-Tropez, one of the preeminent regattas on the French Riviera, unfolding over a week at the end of September.

12. Port Grimaud

Port Grimaud

At the deepest nook of the Gulf of Saint-Tropez is an enchanting urban development begun in the early 60s and the brainchild of architect and urban planner François Spoerry.

Port Grimaud is a tangle of waterways between rows of buildings designed to look like the old fisherman’s houses in the old quarter of Saint-Tropez.

Each of these homes is directly next to the water and has a berth for a boat, usually filled by a sleek-looking yacht as this “Little Venice” is home for some very wealthy individuals.

Place du Portail Neuf

Minutes into the hinterland of Saint-Tropez is this village perched 200 metres above the sea.

Gassin has a slender, elliptical street -plan as it nestles on a narrow ridge that offered protection during raids by Barbary pirates, which were frequent in the Early Modern Age.

The village is a lot of fun to explore, with two historic churches, passages and winding stairways.

Best of all is the Table d’Orientation on Place du Portail Neuf, where you can meditate over a heart-stopping  panorama of the Gulf of Saint Tropez and out to the dark green peaks of the Esterel Massif.

14. Sainte-Maxime

Plage de la Nartelle

With Les Bateaux Verts ferries you can hop from Saint-Tropez to Port Grimaud, and also across to the charming resort of Sainte-Maxime on the other side of the gulf.

After landing you could have a wander around the harbour and old quarter, which are refreshingly down-to-earth: There are French local shops and a large community that lives here all-year-round, not just in high season.

Then see what  you can find along 10 kilometres of coastline.

Plage de la Nartelle is the pick of the beaches, with golden sands and clear waters but none of the crowds you’ll be accustomed to at Saint-Tropez.

15. Food and Drink

Tarte Tropézienne

Just as Brigitte Bardot was putting Saint-Tropez on the map, the resort also gained a trademark dessert pastry.

In fact Tarte Tropézienne, the creation of Polish-born chef Alexandre Micka is said to have been named by Bardot while she was filming And God Created Woman.

Tarte Tropézienne is compose of brioche, whipped cream and crème pâtissière, and pairs well with local rosé wines.

On the subject of wine, there are three caves in the resort but you’re also within striking distance of a host of châteaux for tours.

Rosé makes up 80% of all the wines produced in the surrounding Côtes-de-Provence region.

For those who prefer to drive on their own, the journey will take roughly 2 hours with no traffic but you’ll get to drive along the coast for a bit and see more of the area. You can browse rental car options here .

If you’re looking for a slightly more luxurious alternative, there’s also a ferry you can take from Nice to St Tropez that takes just over 2 hours. Port of Saint-Tropez

1 Day in St Tropez Itinerary

When visiting Nice or other beautiful areas on the Côte d’Azur (such as Cannes or Monaco ), a Nice to St Tropez day trip is a must-do, especially for those who can’t get enough of France.

Most people may have heard of the fabulous St Tropez and the famous people who anchor their yachts at the city’s harbour but there is so much more to the city.

St Tropez Vieux Port

You’ll start your time in St Tropez at the iconic harbour that attracts people from all over. Here you’ll find some of the largest and most impressive boats, as well as pastel-coloured buildings lining the harbour.

Place des Lices Market

Just a short 10-minute walk from the harbour, you’ll come across Place des Lices Market in the old town. Here you’ll find a lovely market in the morning on Tuesdays and Saturdays that sells flowers, souvenirs and fresh produce. In the square, you may find locals playing a game of “boules,” the French ball game.

At the Place des Lices Market, you’ll get the feeling of the old charming St Tropez, as you’ll have a break from the luxury side and shop alongside locals.

You can also simply take in all of the hustle and bustle and people-watch at a streetside café while experiencing all the beautiful fresh produce that makes up the local cuisine. And those who want to explore the local food and wine further will love this guided food tour of the city.

Citadel of Saint-Tropez Museum of Maritime

After the Place des Lices Market, you’ll walk to the Citadel of Saint-Tropez Museum of Maritime, where you’ll get a breathtaking overview of the city from above. The museum is located at a fortress from the 16th century.

While in the past the fortress used to protect the city from possible invasions, it now houses historical maritime artefacts and various treasures like a ship from the 16th century. Here you’ll learn about St Tropez’s interesting seafarer history and more.

Citadel of Saint Tropez

Cimetière marin de Saint-Tropez

When thinking about visiting a cemetery, you might picture a gloomy setting, however, at the Cimetière Marin de Saint-Tropez, you’ll get to experience a unique kind of cemetery. From here you’ll have the sea as a beautiful background and contrast to the light-coloured tombstones.

You’ll walk by the film site Brigitte Bardot graced, as well as the resting place of numerous well-known French people.

La Ponche Beach

As you make your way through the old part of town, you’ll head to La Ponche Beach next, to soak up the sun, fresh sea air and incredible view. At the beach, you can rest and relax, while admiring the stunning colourful houses and the surroundings.

Église Notre-Dame-de-l’Assomption de Saint-Tropez

In the heart of the town, you’ll see a stunning church named Église Notre-Dame-de-l’Assomption de Saint-Tropez that was built in the 18th century and has a Baroque touch to it. It’s an important religious and cultural site in St-Tropez and is a must-see spot for anyone interested in art, history or architecture.

When you look inside the church, you’ll find that it is equally stunning, with beautiful stained glass windows, the grand altar and a collection of sculptures and paintings dating back to the 16th century. The church has a number of significant relics, including a piece from the veil of the Virgin Mary and of the True Cross.

Notre-Dame-de-l'Assomption of Saint-Tropez

Before heading back to the harbour, indulge in a delicious treat at one of the most popular and famous cafes in the city – Senequier.

The cafe originally opened in 1887 and it has seen its fair share of celebrities. At the cafe you can enjoy more than just pastries if you’re craving some seafood, you’ll have lobster, wild sea wolf, salmon and lots more to choose from.

Although the cafe may be on the pricier side, you deserve to treat yourself on your one day in St Tropez. The food along with the view is definitely worth it!

If you opt for public transportation or the ferry ride to get to St Tropez, you can also head back to Nice on the ferry and enjoy an incredible sunset to complete your St Tropez day trip from Nice to top off an amazing trip.

Have 2 or 3 Days in St Tropez?

If you have more time and want to spend 2 or 3 days in St Tropez, there are so many activities you can add to your St Tropez itinerary. While you can see most of the popular spots in one day, with more time, you can explore the surrounding areas near the city that are just as breathtaking.

When looking for fun things to do that won’t break the bank, you can rent a chair or take a beach towel to lay on a beautiful beach, whether it’s a nudist one or not, and you can do this for free. Have a picnic on a beach, do some water activities or simply relax with a good book.

Some of the most popular beaches and beach clubs in or near St Tropez include Pampelonne Beach, Tahiti, Salins and La Croix-Valmer. Each beach is unique and nevertheless magnificent.

Pampelonne Beach in Saint Tropez

Chapelle Sainte-Anne

Named after the Virgin Mary’s mother, the Saint Anne Chapel dates back to the 16th century. Over the years, the chapel has been used for different things, such as a prison, storage facility and now a cultural centre.

The chapel now hosts various events like concerts, weddings, art exhibitions and other cultural events. It’s intimate atmosphere and beautiful interior make it a unique and special place to visit in Saint-Tropez. The chapel is also surrounded by picturesque streets and buildings, adding to the charm of the area.

Wine Tasting

France is known for being at the top of the list for producing the best wines. If you’re interested in sampling some local vintages, you can tour one of the many scenic wine tours in the area near St Tropez.

Learn everything there is to know about French wine, while enjoying a few glasses, or bottles, out in the beautiful vineyards.

Less than 10 km from St Tropez, you’ll come across the charming village of Ramatuelle, with narrow streets you can stroll through and dreamy white sandy beaches.

In Ramatuelle, you’ll experience the traditional Provençal of any traveller’s dream. Whether you plan to lounge on the beach, try some water sports or tour a vineyard , there is plenty to do in the area.

Coastline near Ramatuelle

Cap Camarat

From St Tropez’s Port, Cap Camarat is about 13 km away. In France, the lighthouse is known as the second highest in the country at 36 meters high and it was built in 1829. Even today, the lighthouse still helps guide ships on the Mediterranean Sea and ensures they get to their destination safely.

Gassin is also known for its fine wines, with several vineyards surrounding the village that offer wine tastings and tours. Visitors can sample local wines such as the famous Côtes de Provence and learn about the winemaking process from the experts.

For those who love the outdoors, Gassin is a great base for exploring the nearby beaches and natural parks, such as the Massif de l’Esterel and the Port-Cros National Park. One can also enjoy activities such as hiking, cycling, and horseback riding in the surrounding countryside.

Port Grimaud

As it was only built in 1960, the seaside town of Port Grimaud is relatively new and with its Venetian-inspired canals, bridges and architecture, it’s even nicknamed “The Venice of Provence” and makes for a popular place to visit.

Since the canals are one of the most charming and best ways to explore Port Grimaud, renting a small boat and touring the town on the water is a great way to admire the stunning town. For a great view from above, visit the Church of Saint François of Assisi and climb to the top to better take the whole town in.

Hello, can you take the ferry from Nice to get a great view of the port of St Tropez from the water, then take the train back from St Raphael? Would you recommend this to have more time to spend in St Tropez? Or would you not risk missing the train back same night? Traveling 8th October for the regatta Thanks!

Saint Tropez Private Tours

The best private tours in saint tropez, france.

A touch of luxury, pompous yachts, and cruise ships in Saint Tropez and Port Grimaud’s harbor. Expensive sports cars around Saint Maxime, hip beach clubs on the Saint Tropez shore, and of course, celebrities everywhere you look, that’s what comes to mind and what most expect when they hear Saint-Tropez, French Riviera, and the Cote d’Azur.

But Saint-Tropez is not just a cliché and the “cradle of the international jet set.” It is also a very charming town with small, narrow alleys, the world-famous “Chateau Minuty,” picturesque courtyards, and olive trees, whose charm hardly anyone can resist when they visit the small port has let in.

Today, our local guides take you on a unique private French Riviera tour and the best full-day trips to the glamorous and jet-set harbor and city for your Saint Tropez Tours !

Saint Tropez Tours & private tailored-tours

Saint-Tropez is located in the French department of Var in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur region next to Sainte-Maxime.

Over the year, however, the numerous tourists attract around five million visitors. When joining the best private tours of Saint Tropez with our dedicated local tour guides and experts, you will quickly understand why.

Saint-Tropez used to be a typical fishing village until Guy de Maupassant and Paul Signac discovered it at the end of the 19th century. Many more writers and artists followed, and the place quickly became a meeting place for the fine arts.

It came in the 1950s, when the town became famous around the world, mainly through the film “… and always beckons women” with Brigitte Bardot.

Today many prominent Europeans spend their holidays in Saint-Tropez or stop there with their yachts and visit, for example, B. the well-known beach clubs or fine restaurants or shop in the expensive boutiques of luxury labels.

But the creative art scene can still be found in Saint-Tropez today, as well as authentic customs, historical monuments, and many events away from the jet-set.

In Saint Tropez, you don’t necessarily have to be on the hunt for celebrities to have exciting days in Saint-Tropez to experience and that also at affordable prices.

What you’ll see in your Saint Tropez private tours?

Most people who make a trip to Saint-Tropez secretly hope to catch a glimpse of a celebrity. After all, we know that world stars regularly frequent their yachts here. But even those who are not interested in the world of glamor will find a lot of sights in Saint-Tropez.

Some sights to visit during your Sain Tropez private tour with FreeWalkingGtourNice.com:

  • The Citadel St Tropez: La Citadelle towers watch over the city and offer a fantastic view of Saint-Tropez and the surrounding port cities.
  • La Gendarmerie Nationale Musuem : The “Musée de la Gendarmerie et du Cinéma” was opened in the old gendarmerie station where the famous series “Le Gendarme” with Louis de Funés was filmed at the time.

  • Notre-Dame-de-l’Assomption Church: The church is one of the unmistakable landmarks of the place. It is located in the middle of the old town, surrounded by romantic alleys, and can be seen from afar due to its bright yellow-ocher design.
