Tourist Places in Sri Ganganagar

The northern-most city of Rajasthan, Sri Ganganagar is located near the border of the state of Punjab and also the international border of the nation of Pakistan. It is often referred to as “the food basket of Rajasthan” due to its fertile plains similar to those one would find in Punjab. The area was once barren and dry but was converted to a green town thanks to Maharaja Ganga Singh who constructed the Gang Canal to carry excess water from Punjab and Himachal Pradesh to the town. Today, Sri Ganganagar is famed for its produce of wheat, mustard, cotton, bajra, sugarcane and grams. Kinnow, a hybrid citrus fruit is a popular horticultural product that is grown here. Majority of the industries in the area are based on agriculture and it provides a livelihood to a majority of the residents of Sri Ganganagar. In ancient times, two mighty rivers i.e. the Saraswati and the Drishadvati flowed through the area making it home to tribes similar to those belonging to Mohenjo-Daro and Harappa. However, in due course the rivers started to dry up causing a natural calamity that wiped out the tribes and caused Sri Ganganagar to turn into a barren wasteland. During the 15th century, Rao Bika established Bikaner and the territory of Sri Ganganagar was part of the princely State of Bikaner. Finally in 1927, the overhaul of Sri Ganganagar was complete thanks to the Gang Canal constructed by Maharaja Ganga Singh as the city was restored to its former glory. History The history of Sri Ganganagar is related with the history of Bikaner. Rao Bika, the son of Rao Jodha who was the founder of Jodhpur founded Bikaner in 1488 AD. Present Sri Ganganagar was the part of princely state of Bikaner. Later one of his descendant Maharaja GangaSingh established a well planned city and named it as Sri Ganganagar. The plan of this city was drawn during the construction of canal on Satlej River to supply water in the western part of Bikaner. Irrigated parts of Bikaner district were then incuded in Sri Ganagnagar and then sub-divided into Hanumangarh. Bror village Located on the Anoopgarh-Ramsinghpur road, Bror village is famed for the remnants of the Indus Valley Civilisation being unearthed here. Several artefacts, skeletal remains and buildings have been found in the vicinity of the village and they point to a period of time when the area was thriving with life. Sri Ganganagar: History, Geography, Places to See

Sri Ganganagar district of Rajasthan

Sri Ganganagar is often referred to as “the food basket of Rajasthan” due to its fertile plains similar to those one would find in Punjab. It is the northern-most city of Rajasthan, located below the border of the state of Punjab and the international border of the nation of Pakistan. In 1927, Maharaja Ganga Singh constructed the Gang Canal to carry excess water from Punjab and Himachal Pradesh to the town and the area was converted to green town. Today, Sri Ganganagar is famed for its produce of wheat, mustard, cotton, bajra, sugarcane and grams.

History of Sri Ganganagar:

Sri Ganganagar (Hindi: श्री गंगानगर) is a planned city, named after Maharaja Shri Ganga Singh Bahadur, Maharaja of Bikaner.

In the ancient times , two rivers hallowed in Vedic hymns viz. Saraswati (modern Ghaggar or Hakra) and Drishadvati, flowed through this territory. Excavations undertaken at Kalibanga and Rangmahal etc. situated on the bank of the dry-beds of these rivers have proved that the Indus valley civilization had extended upto this place and it was inhabited by the people akin to those who had flourished at Mohenjodaro and Harappa. The rivers, however, dried up in course of time and as a result of this natural calamity the region became inhospitable and desolate.

The medieval history of  Sriganganagar is common with the history of Bikaner.   Rao Bika, the son of Rao Jodha who was the founder of Jodhpur, established Bikaner in 1488. The territory of modern Sriganganagar district has been a part of the princely state of Bikaner. Along with the other parts of Bikaner state, the area under the Nizamat of Sriganganagar went into the making of the state of Rajasthan.

Ganganagar was designated as district headquarters on 30th march, 1949.

Geography of Sri Ganganagar

Sriganganagar district is a plain region of the vast Thar desert land. It has sandy soil in the west dotted with 4-5 metre high sand dunes. The northern part of the district is mostly covered with forest. The average height of the district from the sea level is 168 to 227 metres.

There remains much climatic variation in Sriganganagar district throughout the year. It is an arid region with very low rainfall. The winter season extends from November to March, the summer season from April to June, rainy season from July to mid-September, and post-monsoon season from mid-September to October.

The average annual rainfall of the district is 20.70 cm. The maximum temperature in summer is 48.4°C and the minimum temperature in winter is 0.6°C. As a result there are scorching heat waves in summer and biting cold waves in winter in the whole district.

Natural Resources:

The district is not very rich in respect of minerals. Gypsum is the only mineral available with the district, however the main pocket of Gypsum are with newly formed Hanumangarh district which used to be a part of Gangangar district till 1994.

There aren’t many tourism attractions in the district. Prior to 1994, the district’s historical sites included Kalibanga, Gogameri, Bhatner Fort, and Bhadrakali Temple, among others. However, these are currently located in the district of Hanumangarh. However, there are a few historical and tourist attractions in the Sri Gangangar district:

The historical Gurudwara of Buddha Johad, the renowned Sikh religious temple, is located 75 kilometres south-west of Sri Ganganagar. On August 11, 1740, Bhai Sukha Singh and Mehtab Singh brought the head of Massa Rangarh (guilty of sacrilege of the Amritsar Golden Temple) and hung it on a tree. Every floor of this massive Gurudwara has 22 pillars. Tourists can stay in one of 140 rooms close to the gurudwara. Aside from numerous other structures, there is also a modest library that houses portraits of Sikh martyrs. The Gang Canal supplies water to the gurudwara’s sacred pond (johad).

The Indus Valley Civilisation’s remnants can be found here. It is situated on the Anoopgarh-Ramsinghpur highway.

This sacred site is located in the town of Sri Vijaynagar. Every year in the month of Falgun, a massive 7-day fair is held at Dada Pammaram’s grave. The fair closes on Falgun Sankranti. This fair attracts pilgrims from the neighbouring states of Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, MP, UP, and Bihar, in addition to Rajasthan. Dada Pammaram was born about 400 years ago in Bikaner’s village Kumbhana during the reign of Guru Nanak Dev. Because most pilgrims, it is reported, came from Pakistan and had to travel a long distance to reach Kumbhana, the Baba’s tomb was initially built at Fortabad in Pakistan at his own request. However, following partition, the mausoleum was relocated to Sri Vijaynagar, where hundreds of pilgrims visit each year.

The tomb (mazar) of Laila-Majnu at Binjaur hamlet is located near Anoopgarh city on the western side, 11 kilometres away. This Mazar (mausoleum) is often associated with the mythological and legendary lovers Laila and Majnu. According to popular belief, Laila and Majnu were from Sindh and moved to this location to escape the clutches of Laila’s parents and her brother, who were opposed to Laila-love. Majnu’s Laila and Majnu both died here and were buried together. As a result, this location has become a symbol of love, and people gather here to seek blessings from Laila and Majnu. In June, a fair is held here, which is visited by hundreds of newlyweds and lovers.

Suratgarh Super Critical Thermal Power Station

The Rajasthan Rajya Vidhyut Utpadan Nigam Limited manages the Suratgarh Super Critical Thermal Power Station, which produces energy. It is the state’s most important super thermal power station. This station has been successful in reducing pollutants and maintaining the environmental balance of air emissions. Suratgarh super thermal power station is 27 kilometres from Suratgarh, 15 kilometres from Suratgarh to Biradhwal on NH 15, and 12 kilometres east of NH 15. On August 8, 2004, the plant won a gold shield from the Hon’ble President for continually great performance from 2000 to 2004. It also won a bronze shield from the Hon’ble Prime Minister for exceptional achievement in 2005 and 2006.

Anoopgarh Fort is a ruin located at Anoopgarh. Anoop Singh Rathore designed it.

The Hindumalkot Border, often known as the Indo-Pak Border, is named after Hindumal, the Diwan of Bikaner.
