Gonzaga president Thayne McCulloh to retire next year

SPOKANE — Gonzaga University President Thayne McCulloh will retire in July 2025, he announced Monday.

“This decision follows a lengthy period of reflection, discernment and consultation,” McCulloh said in a statement. “After 30-plus years at this wonderful institution, the time is coming to step aside and allow others to have the great privilege and responsibility of serving Gonzaga into its future.”

Christy Larsen, chair of the Gonzaga board of trustees, praised McCulloh in a statement.

“He has been a tireless champion of Gonzaga, and his commitment to advancing the Catholic and Jesuit mission, effective collaboration, academic excellence, student success, shared governance, fundraising, and fostering an inclusive and supportive environment for faculty, staff, and students has been foundational and instrumental to our success,” she said.

McCulloh intends to continue working through the transition and complete “several important projects and initiatives during his final year,” according to a news release.

His departure isn’t spurred by any specific event, he said, but rather the stressors of the job, many of which aren’t visible to the outside eye.

“The issues of the day play themselves out on a campus community, so after a time you start to realize that time on the road and all of those kinds of things start to kind of create real stress and challenges,” he said.

“I think 15 years is quite a run.”

McCulloh graduated from Gonzaga in 1989 with a psychology degree. His senior year, he was elected student body president and was involved in residence life. Post-grad, he returned to the school to teach psychology after getting his master’s and doctorate degrees from Oxford University. He went on to work as the director of housing and dean of student financial services. In 2010, he was elevated from interim president to the 26th president of Gonzaga, becoming the first non-Jesuit leader in the school’s history. He is the second-longest serving president at the school.

The president’s announcement comes 14 months before he leaves the university, giving the board of trustees a lengthy period to search for new leadership, he said, and ensuring a “smooth, effective and meaningful transition for the new President and for the community.”

The board has retained the firm of Russell Reynolds Associates to support the work of a search committee that will soon be appointed, the release said.

Throughout his 15 years as Gonzaga president, McCulloh is proud of the school’s handling of the COVID-19 pandemic, capital projects completed and its current financial picture, the latter of which he credited largely to benefactors.

During the pandemic, Gonzaga was one of the first universities in the west to open campus for students in fall of 2020, giving students the option to learn from home or on campus, and faculty could decide to hold classes remotely or in person. There were no pandemic-related layoffs or reductions in benefits or salaries for faculty and staff, according to the release.

“I think that that really helped people to feel as though they had agency in the face of a lot of real fear and concerns and legitimate worries about what this meant and where it was going to take us,” McCulloh said. “I am always going to be grateful and very proud of our community for the way in which people showed up.”

The Gonzaga campus also hosted some of the earliest vaccination sites in the Spokane region.

McCulloh said he’s eager to watch his successor from afar, and advised that they should continue to nurture the symbiotic relationship the university has with businesses and organizations in Spokane and beyond. Partnerships include the Health Partnership with the University of Washington, Gonzaga’s Center for Community Engagement, Opportunity Northeast and some with Catholic Charities Eastern Washington.

“Gonzaga and Spokane are interlinked in so many different ways that benefit both,” he said. “There’s a huge opportunity for the next leader to continue to build and capitalize on those relationships, and to even broaden and enrich them more widely into the Northwest region and the western part of the US.”

Another source of pride stemming from McCulloh’s 15-year presidency and 34-year work at the school is his students. In leading the Gonzaga administration, he said his focus has been on students’ experiences and achievements, a priority he hopes new leadership will share.

“Their success is the way by which we principally measure our success,” he said. “Whether that’s occurring in classrooms and labs or on courts or fields, or whether that’s happening out in the community or on our own campus. Really our focus is and I believe needs to remain on our students.”

Elena Perry’s work is funded in part by members of the Spokane community via the Community Journalism and Civic Engagement Fund. Publications, gonzaga university president mcculloh to retire in july 2025, trustees preparing to launch presidential search.

President Thayne McCulloh speaks at a microphone, with sparkling lights above him.

SPOKANE, Wash. – Thayne M. McCulloh, an alumnus of Gonzaga who has served the university since 1990 and led as its president for the past 15 years, today announced that he will retire from the presidency in July 2025.

“This decision follows a lengthy period of reflection, discernment and consultation,” said McCulloh in today’s announcement . “After 30-plus years at this wonderful institution, the time is coming to step aside and allow others to have the great privilege and responsibility of serving Gonzaga into its future,” he said. Following a succession of 25 Jesuit presidents, McCulloh is the university’s first regularly appointed lay leader, and its second-longest serving president.

“As Chair of the Board of Trustees, I’ve had the privilege to witness the steadfast leadership our president provided during some of Gonzaga’s best times as well as some of its most challenging ones. He has been a tireless champion of Gonzaga, and his commitment to advancing the Catholic and Jesuit mission, effective collaboration, academic excellence, student success, shared governance, fundraising, and fostering an inclusive and supportive environment for faculty, staff, and students has been foundational and instrumental to our success,” said Christy Larsen  (BA ’88), chair of the Gonzaga University Board of Trustees.

President McCulloh has affirmed his intention to continue the work of planning for transition and completing several important projects and initiatives during his final year. Gonzaga University’s Board of Trustees is currently preparing for the  presidential search  and has retained the firm of Russell Reynolds Associates to support the work of a committee that will soon be appointed and announced for this purpose. A website dedicated to supporting the search process can be found at gonzaga.edu/presidentialsearch .

During President McCulloh’s tenure, the University has achieved many important milestones. Today, Gonzaga is consistently regarded among the nation’s best comprehensive universities, with its programs nationally ranked, its faculty engaged in important scholarship and research, and its alumni achieving renown in their professions.

As the first lay president in the history of Gonzaga University, Dr. McCulloh has enhanced the specifically Jesuit and Catholic mission of Gonzaga in multiple ways: through partnering with the ministries of the local Diocese; championing opportunities for mission formation by faculty, staff and trustees; by strengthening working relationships with the Society of Jesus at the local, provincial, national, and international levels; and by leading the fundraising for a new residence for members of the Society of Jesus on Gonzaga’s campus.

Appointed in the aftermath of the 2007-08 financial crisis, McCulloh has worked to strengthen the financial position of the University by building cash and short-term investments, refinancing debt, increasing the value of the endowment, supporting high yield investment strategies, and increasing investment in the institution’s physical assets. Under his leadership, the capabilities of the University to support educational achievement and student success were strengthened through development of new and renovated facilities including: the John J. Hemmingson Center; the Bollier Family Center for Integrated Science & Engineering; the Myrtle Woldson Performing Arts Center; the Della Strada Jesuit Residence; the Stevens Center for Tennis and Golf; the Volkar Center for Athletic Achievement; the Boone Avenue Retail Center (BARC); and the UW-GU Health Partnership Building, among others. All of these projects and initiatives were made possible through the generous support of many benefactors, and a major fundraising campaign that exceeded its goal by over $100 million.

He has built stronger relationships with the City of Spokane, local businesses, non-profit organizations, regional universities, and elected officials. This has included expanded community service offerings and partnerships with Gonzaga’s Center for Community Engagement, Opportunity Northeast (ONE), and partnerships with Catholic Charities Eastern Washington. He also worked together with the University of Washington School of Medicine in creating the unprecedented UW-GU Health Partnership, bringing together a public and private university to maintain and expand medical education in our region.

McCulloh guided the institution through the COVID-19 pandemic, leading the effort to be one of the first universities in the western United States to welcome students back to campus in fall of 2020, maintaining support for students through both in-person and hybrid instruction; retaining staff and faculty with no layoffs, no reductions in benefits or salaries; and support for hosting on Gonzaga’s campus some of the earliest vaccine clinics available in the Spokane region.

He has made increasing diversity and support for greater inclusivity within the Gonzaga community a priority. This has included hiring of senior administrators from diverse backgrounds and increasing support for students and colleagues from diverse and historically underrepresented populations.

His tenure has accompanied numerous unprecedented achievements across intercollegiate athletics, including the development of new athletic and academic facilities. Many of Gonzaga’s Division I athletics programs have won conference championships and/or tournaments, and advanced to the NCAA tournament, some multiple times. Notably, the Women’s basketball team achieved its highest AP ranking (#11 in 2018-19), and the Men’s basketball team attained its first-ever AP #1 ranking (2013) and appeared in two National Championship title games (2017, 2021) during his presidency.

Since the beginning of his presidency, McCulloh has consistently worked to underscore and emphasize the critical relationship between the university and the City of Spokane and Inland Northwest region. Initiatives such as the Opportunity NorthEast (ONE) and seeking a Tech Hub designation (under the CHIPS and Science Act of 2022) underscore the university’s commitment to the economic development of the region.

Change and chance. gonzaga campus, the future in two words, sign up now.

These two words, recalled in the bright installation of artist Domenico Pellegrino (situated in the prospect of the building that connects the Scuola to the International School) for us represent more than just two words; express pefectly the synthesis of our vision and of our way of making and being school.

ChanGe also means innovation; in a time like this it is important to renew ourselves constantly, as an act of future. ChanCe means having but also giving possibility of an authentical life to many children and kids.

It is interesting how one single letter can change the meaning of an entire word, enlightening different shapes. And it is wonderful to notice that the two letters that make those words different (chanGe – chanCe), are in fact G and C, initials for Gonzaga Campus. A beautiful coincidence that we wanted to make ours.

Caleb Williams and Olu Fashanu’s NFL journey started at Gonzaga College High School

Before becoming first-round NFL selections, Caleb Williams and Olu Fashanu were high school teammates

Share All sharing options for: Caleb Williams and Olu Fashanu’s NFL journey started at Gonzaga College High School

College teammates getting drafted together in the first round of the NFL Draft is certainly nothing new. Last season, for example, saw teammates Bryce Young and Will Anderson Jr. come off the board within the first three selections, Ohio State teammates C.J. Stroud and Paris Johnson Jr. within the top ten, and Clemson defenders Myles Murphy and Bryan Bresee with back-to-back picks at No. 28 and No. 29, respectively.

But high school teammates?

That is a much different story, but it is the story that Caleb Williams and Olumuyiwa Fashanu have written tonight.

Williams and Fashanu were teammates at Gonzaga College High School, a school located in the heart of Washington, D.C. and blocks away from the U.S. Capitol. Fashanu arrived on campus for the 2016-2017 school year having never played football before, but was convinced by a classmate to try out for the football team that season. He started out on the defensive line — needing to learn the basic such as a three-point stance — and after a successful freshman year switched to the other side of the football.

To help block for Williams.

During the 2017 season Williams started at quarterback for Gonzaga as a freshman, while Fashanu was a reserve offensive lineman. But both were in the starting lineup the following year, when Gonzaga made it to the Washington Catholic Athletic Conference (WCAC) Championship Game for the first time since 2003. In that game against DeMatha Catholic, often termed the “greatest game ever played” in the D.C. area, Gonzaga overcame an early 20-0 deficit to win on a last-second, 53-yard Hail Mary.

In that game Williams accounting for all seven Gonzaga touchdowns, throwing three, running three, and catching one.

Their last year together at Gonzaga was the 2019 season, when Williams again was the team’s starting quarterback while Fashanu started at left tackle. That is when they went their separate ways, with Fashanu heading to Penn State and Williams returning to Gonzaga for a final season before he enrolled at Oklahoma.

But now their journey reunites them in the NFL, with Williams headed to the Chicago Bears and Fashanu to the New York Jets. Williams was the first-overall selection, while Fashanu came off the board at No. 10.

According to the school, this is the first time in NFL history high school teammates were drafted in the top 15, and “only a handful of high schools have ever had two alumni selected in the first round of the same year.”

(Interestingly enough, a second pair of high school teammates could join them later tonight, as Oregon quarterback Bo Nix and Alabama cornerback Ga’Quincy “Kool-Aid” McKinstry were teammates at Pinson Valley High School in Alabama.)

For those that saw Williams and Fashanu during those formative years, they could not be prouder.

“While at Gonzaga, Caleb made magic happen, combining an exceptionally strong and accurate arm with swift and elusive feet. However, many of Caleb’s magical moments would not have been possible without Olu’s explosive power, physicality, agility and technical skill – all of which protected and paved the way for Caleb to dazzle the crowd,” said Gonzaga head coach Randy Trivers in a statement to the media, including SB Nation.

“We are immensely proud of these two Gonzaga men. They have adorned certain colors as collegiate competitors and now will represent a new city, proudly waving their flag displaying those colors,” added Trivers. “I’m certain, however, that they will continue to have a touch of Gonzaga purple in their hearts as they lovingly and faithfully embrace their new franchises and fans.”

Terry Kernan, Jr., who coached Fashanu on the freshman team at Gonzaga and also served as a math teacher, also praised the two former Gonzaga athletes.

“As one of Olu’s Freshman Football coaches and one of Caleb’s math teachers, I had the privilege of getting to know both young men as students here. Hardworking, conscientious leaders, they have set an extraordinary example for our current students to emulate – and their work in the community as “men for others” is just as impressive as their success on the field,” said Kernan. “As a Gonzaga alumnus, I couldn’t be more proud that these two outstanding young men represent our school in such a positive way. On behalf of all the coaches of the Gonzaga Athletic Department, congratulations Caleb and Olu! You will both forever be Gonzaga Eagles!”

The two former Eagles may soon have another teammate join them in the NFL. Safety Jordan Colbert started his career at Columbia and was an All-Ivy League Honorable Mention selection in 2021 before transferring to Rhode Island. This past season Colbert racked up 57 tackles, 3 TFLs, a half-sack, a pair of interceptions, and five PBUs at Rhode Island as a grad transfer student. Colbert is anticipated to be a late-round selection.

Tour Itinerary

With the 1000-year history, Russia has had a rich portfolio of conflicts, battles, wars. On this Soviet tour, we'll talk about various wars that happened in Russia, focusing on WWII.

Mother Russia has undergone a lot in its long life. Since ancient times, Russian rulers have taken nearly all political power into their own hands. By the beginning of the 20th century, the Russian oppositional movement was deadly set for the total destruction of the ever-lasting tsarist regime. All of Russia got involved in the bloody revolution of 1917 in an effort to abolish the current state of the government and gain freedom for the ordinary people.

You will learn about the every-day life of the Soviet people during the bloody Second World War with the Nazis, including the legendary Battle for Moscow, the 900-day siege of Leningrad, the hardships that local citizens went through, the consequences of the war and the scars it left on the Soviet people, as well as why the Cold War happened and what was the fundamental reason.

Our mission on the Soviet Russia tour is to find out

  • - How much this 1917 revolution cost the people;
  • - Whether they actually got the freedom they wanted and was it worth it;
  • - What happened over the next 74 years;
  • - Who were the main political communist leaders of the Soviet Union;
  • - Were Russians happy and satisfied with the Soviet Union?

Our tour itinerary will lie in most Soviet areas of Moscow, which are quite spread throughout the city, as very few of them are left. You can choose how much you are ready to live this Soviet life on a 5, 7 or 10-hour tour. Depending on the duration of the tour, you will see part or all of the places below:

If you want to extend the tour, you are welcome to do so by paying $20/extra hour in cash on the tour.

Time stands still in Red Square. The Red Square is the heart of Moscow (and whole Russia). Saint Basil's Cathedral will make your mouth drop. If it is from May-October, have a cocktail on the outside terrace and simply people watch! The massive square offers so much to enjoy.

Lenin's Mausoleum

The burial place of one of the most influential communist leaders in the world.

Revolution Square Metro Station

Rub the Soviet dog's nose for good luck and admire the 76 bronze sculptures, devoted to the passionate, strong-willed and patriotic Soviet people.

Poklonnaya Hill

The highest point in Moscow, where Napoleon waited for keys of the city.

All-Russian Exhibition Center (VVC)

With its giant arch, amazing fountain, and huge pavilions of different Soviet Republics.

Victory Park Metro Station

The deepest undeground station in Moscow and one of the deepest in the world.

Victory Park

For an open-air museum as big as 135 ha (1 350 000 square meters), Victory park sure doens't lack diversity. The park is dedicated to the Russian victory in WWII, and was laid out in 1995 in commemoration of 50-year anniversary of victory.

Stalin had planned for its construction already in 1941, being sure of victory from the very start of the war.

Greeting Hill

The highest points in Moscow (172 meters), where Napoleon waited for keys of Moscow in vain.

Triumphal Arch

Stunning monument consisting of 12 cast-iron columns, each 12 meters high, and weighing 16 tons. Built to mark Russia's victory over Napoleon in 1812.

Museum of the Great Patriotic War

In the city that is as much about wars as it is about victories, there is one essential stopover - the Museum of the Great Patriotic War (that's what WWII is called in Russia). Must-do for those wishing to understand Russia's past and look at the whole war from the different perspective - Russian.

The museum is not for the faint-hearted. Here you can see films about the partisan experience, the scenes that will haunt you forever (no subtitles, but they are not necessary).

Museum of Contemporary History (from outside only)

We'll have a glance at Russian life of the XX century in the  Museum of Contemporary History , which houses bits of everything from Russian history of XXth century: from English club to a storage of Stalin's presents.

Memorial to the Holocaust,

devastating and breath-taking!

Unleash your inner spy. Highly recommended  Bunker-42 ,  Cold War Museum , explore the place where Khrushchev lived during the Cuban Crisis. Go down 18 floors to a gigantic bunker under Moscow that was designed to withstand a nuclear attack. Watch a short film about the severity of the Cold War. If you lived through the Cold War, you will hardly believe it is possible that you are in Bunker 42!

Wander through  Sparrow Hills  and climb up to the highest observation deck of Moscow with stunning views of all seven Stalin’s skyscrapers, including  Moscow State University . After that, experience the excitement of taking a  river cruise  on the Moscow river and catch the views of the Kremlin and Soviet times.

Phyllis J. Campbell endows deanship at WSU’s Carson College of Business

Closeup of Phyllis J. Campbell holding a pair of eyeglasses.

Washington State University and Carson College of Business officials recently announced the establishment of the university’s second-ever endowed deanship. The Phyllis J. Campbell Endowed Deanship stems from an extraordinarily generous gift from Phyllis (’73 Busi. Admin.) and Bill (’69 Civ. Eng.) Campbell of Issaquah, who met as WSU undergraduates and married not long after Phyllis’ graduation.

Due to financial constraints, attending college was far from guaranteed for Phyllis, who grew up in Spokane. Once she began exploring opportunities for financial assistance at WSU, however, Phyllis found it possible to earn a degree.

“At that time, WSU was one of the most affordable colleges we could consider,” Phyllis said. “My father was a dry cleaner. I was one of five children. And we didn’t have a lot of money. I clearly remember a very generous check showing up in the mail from a woman who established a scholarship fund at WSU.”

Phyllis never forgot that scholarship and other WSU resources that allowed her to earn a bachelor’s degree and launch a prolific, trailblazing banking career in the Pacific Northwest — first in Spokane and ultimately in Seattle.

WSU’s announcement commemorates not only Phyllis’ distinguished career, but also her extraordinary leadership, commitment, and generosity in advancing the university’s teaching, research, and service efforts. She is a retired bank executive, philanthropist, and civic leader who served as a WSU Regent from 1991–2003. Among her professional distinctions are honorary doctorates from Whitworth College and Gonzaga University as well as WSU’s highest honor, the Regents’ Distinguished Alumnus Award, in 2006.

Grounded in 40 years of executive experience and extensive board participation, Phyllis is renowned for her ability to foster a high-performance climate. But her career didn’t come without hurdles. Chief among them: proving herself daily in a male-dominated industry, Phyllis said, starting with her first job after college.

“It was really hard to find a job back then, especially for women,” Phyllis said. “I wanted to work for Old National Bank in Spokane. They weren’t hiring. They were skeptical of hiring women back then for whatever reason. So, I had to call them — every day.

“I share this story of persistence with students. I called the bank every day for 20-some days straight; I think they got so tired of me pestering them. I did get hired in their management training program. That was the start of my banking career.”

The endowed deanship for the Carson College of Business promises to have a tremendous impact on its programs. It will provide a sustainable base of support for innovation and excellence while affording the dean discretionary funds to address ever-evolving priorities.

“I think the deanship will help attract and retain great leadership,” Phyllis said. “Second of all, it will hopefully inspire others to give back.”

Officially, the gift comes from both Phyllis and Bill. The fund honors Phyllis’ name as a nod not only to her longtime business influence in the Pacific Northwest, but also her achievements as a female in a traditionally male industry.

“The Carson College of Business is extremely grateful to Phyllis and Bill Campbell for their extraordinary commitment and generosity to advance the leadership of the college,” said Debbie Compeau, interim dean. “I am proud the Carson College deanship will carry the name of such a strong and dedicated business leader as Phyllis and look forward to being able to direct this unparalleled investment toward the highest priorities of the college.”

In addition to supporting the Carson College of Business, the Campbells have also made gifts to WSU in support of athletics and engineering. It’s a philosophy of giving inspired by Phyllis’ first business mentor at Old National Bank, David Clack.

…It’s important to get involved in the community. It’s important to give back to causes. It’s important to pay it forward and pay it back. Phyllis J. Campbell (’73 Busi. Admin.)

“Back then, he taught all of us his philosophy: the more you give, the more you get back; it’s an unending cycle,” Phyllis said. “It’s important to get involved in the community. It’s important to give back to causes. It’s important to pay it forward and pay it back.”

The endowed deanship is the second of its kind at WSU. The university’s first named endowed deanship was established in 2018 at the College of Agricultural, Human, and Natural Resource Sciences for the family of Cashup Davis. Each endowment provides resources to carry out the mission of each respective college and helps the dean develop a culture of philanthropy among university alumni and partners.

“An endowed deanship at WSU’s Carson College of Business in the name of Phyllis J. Campbell is fitting for so many reasons,” said Kirk Schulz, WSU system president. “Not only has Phyllis done her alma mater proud by way of a distinguished business career, but she and Bill — a fellow Coug — have paid it forward in spades with a philanthropic spirit that is sure to impact business students, faculty, and staff at WSU for generations to come. On behalf of the entire WSU system, I extend my utmost gratitude to the Campbells for their continued generosity and foresight.”

Komsomolskaya metro station in Moscow, Russia

A view of the Komsomolskaya metro station in Moscow.

Discover the Best of Moscow

Ten can't-miss activities for your next trip to Moscow.

National Park

To escape the crowds and clamor of the city, you don't have to go any farther than the Losiny Ostrov (Elk Island), one of Russia's first national parks created in 1983. Stroll through its network of numerous paved and unpaved pathways surrounded by grasslands, coniferous and broad-leaved trees and observe more than 200 animal species including elks roaming in their natural habitat.

Archeological Site

Descend to the Archeological Museum , a seven meter-deep underground pavilion below the central Tverskaya Street that showcases an eclectic collection of artifacts harvested from excavations of Voskresensky Bridge. The exposition spans the Stone and Bronze ages as well as more recent items including pottery and coins from the 1700s. Don't miss the 3D virtual reality binoculars to see how that particular place looked back in history.

UNESCO Site

Kolomenskoe Museum-Reserve , located a 10-minute metro ride from the city center, will teleport you to medieval Moscow. Explore its scenic 390-hectares seeded with churches dating back to the 16th century, and the spectacular wooden palace of Tsar Alexis I that is straight out of a fairytale. Equally impressive is the Novodevichy Convent - the fortress founded in 1524 that contains four cathedrals, a mesmerizing icon collection and a venerable cemetery.

Cultural Site

Put on your fanciest outfit and immerse yourself in the cultural scene of Moscow by booking a ticket to an opera or ballet performance at Russia Bolshoi Theatre . This quintessential institution of the Russian musical tradition not only offers traditional world-class productions, but also strives to defy its classical music heritage by constantly offering new experimental stagings.

Off the Beaten Path

Venture down 65 meters beneath Taganka Square for a guided underground tour of Bunker 42 which offers a fascinating deep-dive into Soviet history. Constructed in 1951 under the command of Joseph Stalin, the bunker was supposed to shelter top Kremlin officials during nuclear attack. It currently houses the Cold War Museum offering invaluable insights into the historical developments of that era.

Most Iconic Place

The candy-colored, swirling-patterned domes of St. Basil's Cathedral are an undeniable icon of Moscow. Commissioned by infamous Ivan the Terrible, the cathedral was built in the 16th century to commemorate the victory over The Khanate of Kazan. The complex consists of ten separate churches festooned with centuries-old historic frescoes, oil paintings and Russian icons.

Historic Site

The spacious cobble-stoned Red Square is the heart of the capital and a symbol of Russia's historically rich and captivating past. Perpetually brimming with people, the place is filled with frantic energy and has plenty to offer. Plan to spend a full day scouting its numerous sights including the extensive grounds of Kremlin, astounding St. Basil's Cathedral, eerie Lenin's Mausoleum and luxurious national department store GUM built in 1893.

Local Quirk

Nothing unites Russians like a collective visit to one of the banyas (bath houses). Indulge in this invigorating quintessential Russian experience by visiting the iconic Sandunovskiye Baths, which will impress with its 19th century ornate halls, or the Rzhevskie baths for a down-to-earth therapeutic sequence starting with steaming, then plunging into cold pools, followed by a whipping with birch twigs, finishing with a massage and tea afterwards.

  • Nat Geo Expeditions

Neighborhood to Explore

To see the hip side of Moscow head to Winzavod, a complex of former wine-bottling companies which were converted into a cluster of cool exhibit and studio spaces used by local artists. It is a great place to peruse contemporary art galleries and creative showrooms, or kick back in one of the trendy cafes and book stores.

Museums Not To Be Missed

Take a walk through Russia's art history at Tretyakov Gallery which displays a collection of 1,300 works spanning early religious relics to modern avant-garde masterpieces. The Garage Centre of Contemporary Art designed by eco-friendly architect Shigeru Ban, or the Multimedia Art Museum, which is devoted entirely to photography, are perfect places to tap into the city's modern art scene. A hangout spot for locals and tourists alike, the massive VDNKh (All-Russian Exhibition Centre) is a fun open-air museum park of Soviet-era architecture paired with an entertainment complex.

New Delhi [India], April 24 (ANI): Recognising market demand, the Moscow City Tourism Committee organized a conference for representatives of the Indian MICE industry, to introduce them to the tourism strengths of the Russian capital.

MICE stands for Meetings, Incentives, Conferences and Exhibitions, and is a type of tourism in which large groups, usually plan things well in advance.

The event took place on April 19 in Delhi and brought together over 100 participants from MICE agencies of both countries, corporate customers, representatives of the travel industry in Moscow, Aeroflot and the Indian branches of Sberbank.

Business tourism is one of the most promising directions for Moscow.

In 2023, the capital was visited by 3.7 million business tourists – 7 per cent more than in 2022. And India remains one of the leaders among visitors from non-CIS countries in terms of the number of business travellers.

“The Russian capital as a centre of business tourism and corporate events is already an established and a strong brand in the international arena,” commented Anastasia Popova, Deputy General Director for International and Industry Cooperation of Project Office for the Development of Tourism and Hospitality in Moscow.

“Now our task is to demonstrate to our Indian partners all the possibilities of organizing high-value MICE events in Moscow in combination with already proven tourist programs,” said Popova.

At the Shaping MICE Future Conference, industry experts from Russia and India pronounced statements and speeches on the future of MICE events in these two countries, a presentation of the MICE potential of Moscow was showcased, and an analytical report on the state of the outbound MICE market in India was presented to the visitors.

During the panel discussion, participants assessed the current status and interaction peculiarities with the MICE market in India and developed recommendations for the MICE industry in Moscow during the general brainstorming session.

Representatives of the Indian MICE industry participated in B2B negotiations to find new cross-partners in the Moscow business environment and among representatives of the hospitality industry.

Representatives of the MICE industry took part in the event from Moscow.

Among them were DMC (Grand Rus, Academservice, Headed Goose, Satguru Travel, Isba Rus, Hug the Bear, Mellenium Group) as well as representatives of other partners interested in the development of MICE cooperation between Russia and India: Global transfers provider i’way and hotels Edge Seligerskaya and Edge Vinogradovo Moscow by Rotana.

“In 2024, we have witnessed a significant surge (more than quadruple) in the demand for transfers by Russians visiting India, both for business and leisure purposes. Muscovites are leading the trend, with 80 per cent of transfer bookings originating from the capital since the beginning of the year. Additionally, we observe a growing interest from Indian tourism agencies in exploring Russia, resulting in a substantial increase in our collaboration,” commented Dmitriy Saraykin, co-founder of Global Transfer Provider i’way.

The Shaping MICE Future conference allowed the Moscow City Tourism Committee to form a pool of MICE industry representatives in Moscow to prioritize incoming requests for events and clarify India’s requirements for business and corporate events to build mutually effective work. Indian colleagues received up-to-date information about Moscow as a safe and attractive MICE destination and were able to find potential partners among representatives of the MICE industry of the Russian capital and were able to present the MICE market in India.

“The event served as a remarkable platform for fostering meaningful dialogue and collaboration within the tourism industry. The event provided us with invaluable opportunities to engage with key stakeholders from the tourism department, as well as tour operators and service providers. The insights gained during the event underscored the Moscow City Tourism Committee’s keen interest in the Indian outbound market, and we are optimistic about the promising prospects for Moscow as a destination, particularly in the post-pandemic landscape. We firmly believe that with concerted efforts and strategic initiatives, Moscow has the potential to emerge as a top-choice destination for Indian tourists,” said Mudit Mathur, director of Tours Delite India, representing Academ Service – Russia in India.

The conference also assessed the solutions to foreign demand for non-standard venues and elements in MICE programs, such as museums, parks, theaters and others. Holding MICE events at offbeat locations, such as the State Historical Museum, the Moscow Planetarium and Khudozhestvenny Cinema, is becoming popular.

This helps to attract conference organizers and creates a unique experience for the participants. Working in this format, many visitors who come to Moscow on a business trip want to return with their families and spend time as regular tourists. (ANI)
