The undisputed touristic kingpin of western Ukraine is unlike any other city in the country. Touting its wealth of exquisite Germanic architecture, gothic churches and renaissance palaces, the town speaks more of Slavic traditionalism than it does of the USSR, while its distinct multiculturalism and pro-Europe vibe has made it something of a cradle of political liberalism the nation over.
The sightseeing action centres on the Lviv Old town, where the bustling Market Square gives way to enchanting cobbled lanes, the Catholic landmark of the Latin Cathedral, the honorific Shevchenko Monument and the eerie Chapel of the Boim. Nearby lurks the Lychakiv Cemetery, the resting ground of countless Polish and Ukrainian luminaries since the 18 th century. Lviv tour guides also often recommend enjoying a show at the world-famous Lviv Opera and Ballet, or delving into the town’s wealth of great museums, which range from the city’s branch of the National Museum, to the curious Pharmacy Museum on Drukarska.
After dark Lviv transforms itself, with the locals shooting potent horilka (vodka) and local beer in the shadowy corners of the city’s hidden subterranean drinkeries, and dancing the night away awkwardly to bouts of Euro pop.

Generations of Lvivits were laid to rest here: intelligentsia, bourgeoisie and nobility especially. Originally the majority of plots were taken up by Poles, and there are many grand names, including poet Maria Konopnicka and world famous mathematician Stefan Banach. However, Ukrainians outstanding author Ivan Franko and one of the most prominent opera singers of the first half of the 20th century Solomiya Krushelnytska were also entombed here. After the Second World War, an increasing number of Soviet tombs were squeezed in to the already packed necropolis.
For the several centuries it is not just burial vault, but a luxurious park, museum under open-skies and architectural city reserve.

Day 1 – meeting in your hotel (place) around 9 in the morning.
– walking sightseeing tour in Lviv Old Town (3 hours) with visiting of Armenian Church (former Dominican monastery) and Assumption Church (leased to the Ukrainian Autocephalous Orthodox Church). * alternative: Italian courtyard of Kornyakt’s palace (1580). Built by architects P. Barbone and Peter the Roman commissioned by the Greek merchant Kornyakt. Inside – Italian courtyard with an exhibition of sculpture. Branch Historical Museum. ** alternative: to do the same route by car (if it’s cold or you don’t want to walk).
Day 2 – meeting in your hotel (place) around 9 in the morning.
– thematic tour to your taste :
– after lunch tour “ Golden Horseshoe of Lviv ” (5 hours): There are hardly any castles in the world that went through such roller coaster transformations – from royal residence to a hospital, vocational school for farming machinery mechanics, ghost-haunted ruins, museums, crumbling structures in perpetual state of restoration where cows and goats graze on once well-kept lawns. If you expect to see well maintained castles similar to those scattered around Western Europe, then this tour is not for you. Instead, these scarred castles reflect complex and tragic history of Western Ukraine and, in combination with other sites and villages along the way, make for a nice day trip outside of Lviv.
Castles (fortresses) around Lviv are sometimes called “Golden Horseshoe Castles” as they are located in a sort of an arc stretching east and southeast of Lviv. They include castles in Olesko, Pidhirtsi, Zolochiv, Pomoriany, Svyrzh and Stare Selo. The castles in Olesko, Svyrzh and Zolochiv are the best preserved ones, others lie in different stages of ruination. Olesko Castle dates back to the 13th century being the oldest. It is known as a birth place of the famous Polish king Jan III Sobieski. Now the castle is open as a museum featuring 16th and 17th century art. Some of these castles were built at the time when there was no longer any real need to defend the land from invasions of nomads from the East, so they were built as palaces for the Polish aristocracy who owned vast areas of land in Western Ukraine.
We recommend visiting Olesko , Pidhirtsi and Zolochiv castles offering day castle tours where transportation and the tour-guide/interpreter/driver will be provided and included in the price. Other castles can be visited at tourists’ request. The total distance to cover these three castles is about 200 km. Please note that Olesky castle is closed for visitors on Mon.

1. Walk around Rynok Square
UNESCO-listed Rynok Square is one of the top attractions in the city
Your first stop in Lviv will inevitably lead you to the heart of the city - Rynok Square, that can be translated as Market Square. For the past 500 years it has been the bustling center of city life and till now retains all the charm of the old European city, without the pretentions of its more famous neighbors - Prague and Krakow.
The Square has the traditional City Town Hall , built in 19th century, and is surrounded by 44 houses , representing art and architecture from many centuries (16th - 20th century). Many of the houses are still used primarly as living headquarters, though few have become museums, art galleries and coffee shops.
In 1998 all of the Rynok Square has been recognized as UNESCO World Heritage site , and dare we say - rightfully so! Also, Rynok Square is one of the the most romantic places in Ukraine.
Where to find: in the very city center, hard to miss! When to visit: any time How much to pay: for FREE
2. Climb City Town Hall
This Lviv Town Hall does not seem that tall, but wait - till you start climbing it!
How about spending 15 min counting up all the steps in Lviv Town Hall? Getting to its top is one of the most fun things to do in Lviv! We won't break the secret to you, but will hint that the staircase has more than 300, but less than 500 steps. As they wind up to the tiny round tube at the top of the tower, the counting is even more interesting!
The first Town Hall in Lviv was built in 1381, however, it was rebuilt many times, and once was completely burnt down during the big fire in 17th century. Current building dates back to 19th century and offers one of the best aerial views of the city!
Make sure not to miss the internal view of impressive Tower clock, that was made in Vienna in 1852 and till now announces the time to Lviv residents.
Where to find: right in the middle of the Market Square (hard to miss!) When to visit: Tuesday - Friday from 10 am till 5 pm, Saturday - Sunday from 11 am till 7 pm. It is closed on Mondays. How much to pay: 5 UAH, which is 0.5 EURO
3. Take a photo with Neptun
Four fountain statues - make sure to find the ultimate meeting point under one of them
Even though Lviv Rynok Square has a total of four fountains at each side - Diana, Neptune, Adonise and Amphitrite, local Lviv residents give their special love to Neptune. 'Where shall we meet?' - 'At Neptune!' is a typical phrase in conversations of Lviv university students. Whenever you come to the fountain, expect to see bunches and crowds of young people and elderly all ready for their afternoon rendezvouz. If you visit Lviv during one of its summer festivals or major city celebrations, make sure to take a photo with the dressed-up Neptune! By the way, the most popular summer festivals in Ukraine is Zakhid fest.
Where to find: at the Rynok Square, hard to miss! When to visit: anytime of the year How much to pay: for FREE
4. Sit for a romantic cup of coffee in the yard of Lviv History Museum
City's most romantic spot!
The charming building to the right of Lviv Town Hall hosts the main branch of Lviv History Museum. Founded in 19th century, it is one of the oldest and most impressive city museums. It currently hosts over 300,000 artifacts, spread out among the four architectural monuments, all dating from 16-18th century . Korniakt Palace - museum's main building - was a former residence of Jakub Sobieski, the father of Polish king Jan III. Interesting things to check out: jewelry from European countries , signs of military honor and portraits of Ukrainian Hetmans (Cossack leaders), and first printed books in Ukraine by Ivan Fedorov among others.
However, Lviv History Museum is most popular for its cozy yard and coffee shop. Delicious coffee, combined with some classical music performance - and you are sitting in probably one of the most romantic places in the city!
Where to find: Rynok sq., 6 When to visit: 10:00 - 20:00, all the week, on Sat-Sun cafe has live music from 16.00 till 18.00, including jazz concerts and classical music performances How much to pay: 10 UAH for a cup of coffee, plus 2 UAH for museum entrance ticket. Credit cards are not accepted here. We strongly recommend to make reservations ahead, as the place is busy on weekends.
5. Visit Dzyga Art Gallery
Lviv's go to place for modern art
This hot spot for cultural events in the city is no doubt the heart of intellectual Lviv . Founded in 1997 by members of Lviv Students Brotherhood and city's artists, the gallery regularly hosts works by contemporary artists, including paintings, graphics, sculptures, installations, iconography, and performances. For those who want to combine the art and a good cup of coffee, a small cozy cafe is opened at the gallery premises . Don't miss out on its delicious Carpathian tea!

As soon as the weather gets a bit warmer, Lviv streets start bustling with musicians, live bands and performers. They add a special charm to the city and let you enjoy lively music while sitting on the benches of City Rynok Square. Don't be surprised if locals suddenly get up and start dancing. Join them in their fiery jives!

8. Smile at the Monument to a Smile
One of the many quirky monuments in the city
This small 1 meter monument, right outside of Art Gallery Dzyga, is bound to put a smile on your face. The so-called Monument to a Smile is an on-going exposition of Oleg Dergachov, Lviv's caricature maker. According to the author, the monument is supposed to be a live thing, and thus will be changed every now and then. Since its installation in 2000, it already underwent alterations in 2008. Make sure to take a photo with the current version!

The result is one of the most beautiful opera houses in Europe with a luxurious interior , including the Mirror Hall and Parnassus Curtain and a stunning facade with ornate sculpture work. For the curious ones, the Theater stands right at the top of river Poltva, that used to run across the city until some hundred years ago. 14. Cycle in Lviv parks
Cycle away at Lviv parks
For those who are looking for some active vacationing, Lviv has plenty to offer as well. While cycling along the main streets is still not that common (though definitely improving, with the addition of cycling lanes), city has a number of parks, that are just perfect for an afternoon getaway . Among most popular ones are Znesinnia (also known as Kaiservald), Stryjsky, Pohulianky, and Zalizni Vody parks.
Znesinnia park is easily accessible from the city center . You can enter it from the High Castle. When you get to the hill, look to your right, and you will find an entrance to the park. Roads there are not paved, so get ready for some rough cycling. With over 312,1 hectares of ravines, hills and forests, park offers plenty of cycling routes. Combine them with a picnic at the Lysa Hill (Bold Mountain).
Stryjsky park is more well-maintained than the others, and cycling there can be suitable even for smaller kids . Park's entrance is located between the streets Ivan Franko and Stryiska, a mere 15 min walk from the city center. Park is much smaller than Znesinnia, but has a lovely pond with swans , greenhouse , rock garden and linden alley .
Bike rental shops are available throughout the city center .
Where to find: Znesinnia park entrance is located right at the High Castle Hill (Vysoky Zamok). Stryisky park is situated between the Ivan Franko and Stryiska streets. 17. Take bird view photos of Lviv from the High Castle hill
High Castle Hill is the perfect place for an early morning photo shoot
Lviv High Castle can be both a major disappointment and biggest surprise to you! Why disappointment? Because despite its promising name, the place is not that high (unless 413 m is impressive for you) and has no castle whatsoever. Why surprise? Because it offers a quiet refuge from the busy city streets, and it has indubitably the best aerial views of the city ! The hill, also known as Vysoky Zamok, used to be a wooden fortress, built in the 13th century by King Lev. The structure was destroyed and then rebuilt again from stone a century late. Castle served as a residence for King's steward and as a prison, but fell apart some hundred years later. Nowadays, only fragments of old walls remind about place's former glory.
Where to find: High Castle ( Vysokyi Zamok ) is located just outside Lviv’s center inside Vysokyi Zamok Park. There are no direct transport links to the park, so wear good shoes and enjoy the 15-20-minute walk from the center. Just follow the small brown signs. When to visit: sunny weather is the best for great bird view of the city How much to pay: for FREE

19. Explore Lviv underground labyrinths
Up for a scary story or two?
Would you like to check out the 18th century sarcophagus made from a solid stone? Its cover weighs over 600 kg. The object itself is taken apart, but the nature of wreckage indicates that sarcophagus was broken not from the outside, but ...from the inside! Eerie, isn't it? To hear the full Black Monk legend, head to the catacombs of St. Peter and Paul Cathedral of Jesuit Order . For a tour into ancient medicine and treatments, you must check out the underground of Lviv's Pharmacy - Museum . More mysteries await you at the Church of Transfiguration. Its underground halls are by far the largest in the city. Last, but not least, is the basement of Dominican Cathedral . Scientists suggest that the first tier of King Leo palace used to be here once. Nowadays, it's not a royal sight, but a visit down there will take you to monk's cell, hall of torture and will tell you some more spooky legends of underground inhabitants.

20. Learn about Lviv's tragic Soviet past in 'Prison on Lontskoho street' Museum
KGB, political prisoners and spies
This small and recently opened museum takes you to the dark times in Lviv history. While traditional USSR propaganda was showing off Soviet life as a combination of prosperity and equality, this was not the case in Lviv, after the city joined the rest of Ukrainian SSR during World War II. The Prison Museum tells you the stories of the building itself, the daily life of prisoners , many of whom were charged with political dissent, and the mass executions that took place in June 1941.
In a short tour you get to see the single prison cell, death row prison cell, investigation room and a one of a kind photo laboratory. Rare film and photo footage makes the history alive with personal accounts of prisoners. Another hall showcases the blatant irony of Soviet propaganda posters and official songs, praising the Party and its leaders.
While the museum is not an easy place to visit, it's a perfect start for those travelers, who would like to know more about the Soviet past of Ukraine and Lviv in particular.

The famous Town of Dead was built in 1786 and is the last refuge for almost 300,000 people. Among them are renowned Ukrainian poets, artists and politicians. On this trip, you will enjoy the rural scenery along the way and will get a glimpse of the Ukrainian country life. The Lviv Countryside Tour is for an individual or a small group.
What to see on this Tour
Wooden churches included in this Tour represent a unique style of Ukrainian folk architecture. Built from hard oak wood, they have lasted for centuries. One of the wooden churches on the Tour is from 1697. It is well hidden behind country houses, barns and vegetable gardens. A narrow dirt path used mostly by chickens and farm animals runs up to the church from the village street. When the church suddenly appears behind the clutter of rural objects, the view is breathtaking. Several wooden churches in Ukraine and Poland have been added to the UNESCO World Heritage List.
Several Jewish cemeteries and synagogues visited on this Tour are the silent reminders of the culture that ceased to exist in Galicia after the Holocaust. An old Jewish cemetery on the outskirts of Brody is truly amazing and has the highest possible tombstones standing in long straight rows in tall grass. The Brody synagogue is an impressive building that survived war-time bombing and decades of relentless work of the elements on the building that has been without a roof since the War.
About one hour from Lviv, you will be able to see two castles. One of them, the Olesko Castle dates back to the 13th century. This is the oldest of the castles in the area. It is known as the birthplace of the famous Polish king Jan III Sobieski who turned the course of the world history by defeating the Turkish army near Vienna in 1683. The Olesko Castle is a museum featuring 16th and 17th-century art. It is an interesting site that is rich in history and interiors composed of furniture and paintings reflecting the lifestyle of its residents from several centuries ago. If you like old paintings and furniture and plan to visit the castle museum, note that the castle is closed for visitors on Mondays. There is a fee to enter the museum, which can be paid at the castle gate. Olesko Castle also has a restaurant and a WC.
Brody is one of the two towns near Lviv that can be visited on this Tour. At one point in time, Brody was a thriving Jewish community at the eastern border of the Austrian Empire. It is the birthplace of Joseph Roth who wrote the novel Radetzky March . Sigmund Freud’s mother, Amalia Nathansohn Freud, was also born in Brody in 1835. The town features a Market Square, remnants of an old fort and a number of century-old buildings as evidence of the town’s once prosperous past.
The total duration of the tour is about 6 to 8 hours.

THREE-DAY TOUR OF WESTERN UKRAINE:

DAY 1: Sambir is the first sizable town on our way out of Lviv. Its glory days date back to the discovery of oil in the nearby mountains. The good old times are still recognizable in once rich Art Nouveau mansions in quiet streets radiating from the Market Square. An old synagogue and a Jewish cemetery are interesting landmarks in Staryi Sambir, which is the next stop along the way. We enter the Carpathian foothills where there is a wooden church in Rozluch, originally built by the German settles before World War 1. After Turka, the road climbs up showing beautiful views of the surrounding mountains, including the high peaks of the Bieszczady in Poland. We drive in very close proximity to the Polish border. Even though Poland on the other side of the road appears only a few steps away, this is a heavily monitored area being the Eastern frontier of the European Union. Next, the road dives into the Transcarpathian part of Ukraine and suddenly everything gets a tint of Hungarian flavor. UNESCO listed St. Michael’s Church in Uzhok can be seen on a hill to the right. Before reaching Uzhhorod, the Castle in Nevytske is an interesting short detour.
DAY 2: When Stalin and the Western Allies redrew maps of Europe after World War 2, they put Uzhhorod only a hair’s breadth away from the Slovak border. The giant statue of a Soviet soldier is still looming over the border crossing on the western edge of the city. Uzhhorod is a quiet town cut in half by the river with an embankment where many people like to rest on benches in the shadow of large trees in the summer. Our next town Mukachevo looks very much like a smaller sibling of Uzhhorod, both being distinctly Hungarian in appearance. The town Berehovo, where Hungarian is the first language for the majority of people, has thermal springs that draw tourists to a spa resort nearby. Vynohradiv and Khust on our way both have ruined forts dating back several centuries. From Khust, the road takes us into the higher mountains towards Lake Synevyr.
DAY 3: Lake Synevyr is located in a beautiful setting amid forested mountains. It is reached from the highway by a scenic road. Some distance away is another natural attraction, Shypit Waterfall surrounded by mountains with a beech forest. Next, we are on the main West to East highway of Ukraine heading to Drohobych to see one of its wooden churches, now on the World Heritage list by UNESCO. Drohobych also has a town hall, an old Gothic church, and a large restored Choral synagogue. The town preserved its quaint old-time look that has been lost in Lviv with the arrival of crowds of tourists.

FOUR-DAY TOUR OF WESTERN UKRAINE:
A tour designed to see the best parts of western ukraine..
See Four-Day Tour of Western Ukraine on Google Maps: https://goo.gl/maps/zNsxNZfg4fA54bHK6
DAY 1 : we drive east from Lviv towards Ternopil. As we approach the area of Ukraine known for its black soil, farms become larger and fields gradually turn into an endless sea of crops. In the town of Ternopil, we stop to view Ternopil Lake and then drive south towards Kamyanets-Podilsky. On the way, we cross a small river Zbruch, which just over 100 years ago served as the border between Austria-Hungary and the Russian Empire. To a trained eye, the division is visible even today. We stay overnight in Kamyanets-Podilsky where you can enjoy the famous Castle and the Old Town.
DAY 2 : after Kamyanets-Podilsky, we stop to admire the Fortress of Khotyn overlooking the mighty Dnister River. Once an impenetrable fortress is now a museum with great views of the surrounding plains and the river near the historic junction of three international borders. This was a tri-border intersection for the USSR, Romania, and Poland before WW2. The road takes us further to the capital of the former Austrian province of Bukovina. Although somewhat run down, Chernivtsi still retains some of its past European glory. Then on to Ukraine’s most peaceful town of Kolomyya to visit a Museum of Easter Eggs. Between Kolomyya and Yeremche lies the most picturesque stretch of the road in the Carpathian Mountains of Ukraine. If time permits, we stop in Verkhovyna at the Museums of Hutsul musical instruments. The owner is an accomplished musician and will demonstrate local folk tunes. We overnight in Yaremche with its souvenir markets and summer crowds of tourists.
DAY 3 : we travel south deeper into the Carpathian Mountains, towards the Romanian border. At your choice, we can take a loop road through Ukraine’s best ski resort Bukovel. In winter, its well-groomed slopes can rival Alpine resorts of Austria and France, owing to an investment by one of Ukraine’s oligarchs. An all year round lift runs to a summit with a view of Ukraine’s highest mountains, including Mount Hoverla at 2016 m. After another hour on a winding road and over a mountain pass, we reach the Geographical Center of Europe marked by a monument at the side of the road. Get your passports ready at a checkpoint as we start driving in close proximity to the Romanian border. During the night, the Tysa river that runs to our left separating Ukraine from Romania is used to bootleg tobacco and spirits into the European Union in a constant hide-and-seek game with the border patrol on both sides. A short hike to a ruined castle overlooking the town of Khust can be an opportunity to break a long drive and stretch your legs. This area of Ukraine is closely linked to Hungary, and the Hungarian language rivals Ukrainian in many local communities. We stop for the night in Mukachevo.
DAY 4 : Mukachevo is located in the Transcarpathian Lowland on the great Hungarian plane. From here it’s a straight road to Lviv over the Carpathian Mountains. But first, we stop at Palanok Castle. The area around the town of Mukachevo is for Ukraine what California is to the USA. Being sheltered from cold northerly winds by the Mountains, it is the source of early fruit and vegetable for other parts of Ukraine. Vineyards are common here although local wine is produced mainly for the local market. At your choice, a 2-hour (60 km) detour can be taken to visit Shypit Waterfalls in the Carpathian Mountains on the way to Lviv. We arrive in Lviv on the afternoon of Day 4.

Lviv travel guide – all you need to know about the prettiest city in Ukraine
With the current situation in Ukraine, with a heavy heart, I strongly advise not visiting the country. This is the older, pre-war article and you can use it for future inspiration and information to plan a trip when it’s safe to visit Ukraine again.
Lviv, Ukraine is one of the most beautiful yet underrated cities in Europe.
Lviv old town looks like straight from a fairy tale and visiting Lviv is always a pure pleasure. No matter what time of the year the city is never boring, with so many great things to do in Lviv .
I put together a mini Lviv travel guide that would help you plan the trip to this amazing city.
Table of Contents
How to get to Lviv, Ukraine
It’s fairly easy to travel to Lviv – one of the biggest cities in Ukraine.
Numerous international and national trains, buses and flights serve the city.
The main train station is located a short tram ride away from Lviv Old Town, you can reach the center by trams no 1 and 9.
The ticket currently costs 5 UAH and can be bought from the driver (and then stamped in the old-fashioned validator).
Some of the international buses stop at the main train station too and I highly recommend you go there if you can as the main bus station is located a bit away.
If you however end up there you can take the bus 3a to the center.
Lviv international airport is well connected with the center by trolleybus no 9 (it arrives at the university, at the edge of Ivan Franko Park. Recently low cost airlines started flying to Lviv so getting there is really affordable and easy.
If you’re coming from Poland I recommend going by train with a change in Przemyśl .
You can easily get there from most of the major Polish cities, then you have two day trains that take only 2 hours to get to Lviv.
This way you avoid long waiting time at the border as the passport control is in the train.
You can get the ticket for Przemysl-Lviv train at the website of Ukrainian Railways.
Many travelers travel from Krakow to Lviv – if you are one of them and are looking for the best options I’ve created a complete guide how to get from Krakow to Lviv .
How to get around
Most places that everyone tends to visit are within a walking distance from each other in the city center.
If you need to travel any further (to Lychakiv Cemetery for example) there’s a really good and cheap trams network. One way ticket, both bought from the driver or from the newsstand, costs 5 UAH ($0,18/0,16€).
You can also use Uber in Lviv and it works very well, with very reasonable prices.
Where to stay in Lviv
Lviv is full of affordable accommodation so no matter if you’re looking for the hostel, hotel or apartment – you will find it all there.
Just browse through all the options at Booking!
My tip is to stay somewhere near the Main Square (Rynok) as you don’t want to be away from all the fun.
Recently my favorite place to stay in Lviv is Hotel George (8.6/10 on Booking) – the oldest hotel in Lviv where some of the most famous people used to stay.
But don’t let this intimidate you, the prices are very affordable. The rooms are simple and the toilet or shower are not in the room but the interior of the hotel, the history and the perfect location make me return there over and over again.
That’s also the only place I’ve ever stayed at where I could listen to live piano music when eating breakfast.
Click here to read the reviews, see pictures and current deals of Hotel George.
Where to eat in Lviv
Ukrainian cuisine is rather heavy yet really delicious.
I guess everyone has heard of borshch, a red beets soup with other vegetables and some meat, it must be the most popular and famous Ukrainian dish. But there’re so many options worth trying, also for vegetarians.
My favourite is varenyky, dumplings similar to Polish pierogi, stuffed with meat, potatoes, cabbage or cherries.
There’re many restaurants spread around the old town, serving traditional Ukrainian food. They are focused on tourists but still are worth checking.
The most famous ones are Meat and Justice, At Arsenal or House of Legends.
Whenever I’m in Ukraine (not only in Lviv) I eat in Puzata Khata, a chain buffet eatery serving only national food.
It’s always full of people, mostly locals and for me that’s already a good sign for the restaurant. The food is really good and cheap there, the most I paid for the two-course lunch and half a liter of local beer (a really good one!) was less than €4!
There are two Puzata Khata restaurants close to the old town (but not exactly in the old town), maybe 5 minutes walking from the Rynok Square.
One is at Shevchenko Prospekt , the other at Tadeusha Kostyushko street .
Where to drink in Lviv
Lviv is famous for its interesting pubs and cafes. In fact this is the city with the biggest ratio of cafes in the world!
In one of the backstreets of Rynok Square, Serbska street, the Masoch Cafe can be found – the name of the place comes from Leopold Ritter von Sacher-Masoch who was born in Lviv almost 200 years ago.
He enjoyed the unusual sexual behaviour and the word “masochism” actually comes from his name.
The cafe is decorated in that theme, all the drinks have sex-related names, if you wish so the waitress can hancuff and whip you.
It was definitely one of the weirdest and coolest pubs I’ve ever been to!
Other famous pubs include a place where you need to know the secret password to get in, the place where midgets serve or the one full of legends of Lviv.
The city is also known for its cafe culture, cozy places for a sip or two of delicious coffee can be found on every step.
On the Rynok Square, at the corner next to the Ruska Street, the manufacture of coffee is located – the smell is so amazing and coffee so delicious!
If you want to try the Ukrainian beer then Obolon (especially Bile) or Lvivske are really good!
What to see in Lviv
As the city that is on UNESCO World’s Heritage List Lviv is full of amazing and interesting places to visit.
However, the best thing to do there is just walking around the narrow streets and breathing in the wonderful bohemian feel of the city.
Here are some of the places I think you shouldn’t miss:
- Rynok Square – the heart of the city with an amazing architecture and a great street life to observe. It’s not mostly for tourists (as it often is in many cities, Warsaw for example) but more for local people to hang out. When in Rynok be sure to climb the tower of the Town Hall as the view across the city from there is simply stunning
- The Opera House – located at the end of Svobody avenue, not far from the old town. It’s amazing from the outside but breathtaking inside! It’s possible to visit it and immediately be transformed to the fancy world with golden rooms, overblown statues and fancy atmosphere.
- High Castle – a hill overlooking the city. It’s quite a hike up there but so worth the view. Literally the whole city is in front of you, as well as surrounding hills and mountains.
- Lychakivsky Cemetery – located not that far from the center (and the walk there is really pleasant), reachable also by tram. This huge cemetery (over 400.000 people are burried there) is full of beautiful graves of famous Polish and Ukrainian citizens, all in the neat, hilly park.
- churches of Lviv – there are a lot of them in the old town, each one being more beautiful than the previous. I especially liked wonderfull baroque Dominican Church or old Armenian Church.
You can visit Lviv with a guide (highly recommended as this city is full of stories and legends), there are also numerous tours with various themes available. Click here to see the best Lviv tours!
Why is it worth to visit Lviv, Ukraine
For whatever reason, a lot of people still consider Ukraine unsafe and are afraid to go there. Big mistake.
It’s just your regular European country in the safety standards so there’s not much to worry about, just use your common sense like everywhere else.
There might be tension in the east of the country but the rest of Ukraine is safe to travel to.
While the number of tourists visiting Lviv is getting higher each year it is still not as bad as in popular destinations in Western Europe.
The city is still unspoiled by the commercial and it’s so easy to feel the bohemian, artsy, multicultural atmosphere of the old times.
And did I mention it’s just stunning?

As always Kami, thanks for your lovely tips! I’m catching up on all your old Lviv posts as we have a trip planned there in mid-February. Took advantage of the 300pln flights via LOT recently. Can’t wait to explore this cute city! :-)
you will love it for sure! It’s really one of the most beautiful and underrated cities in Europe and with the current exchange rate it will be crazy cheap! I’m slightly jealous you’re going there, Lviv is in my top3 cities :) And LOT can have such a good prices sometimes!!

Hello Kami! Thank you for all your efforts explaining these cities. I wonder about the natural Gems in that area and are they for sale on ebay or other places on the internet. I have been to Crimea and other places. It left a giant impression on me. I would enjoy going back to see your cities and inter- mix into the culture. It would be like a dream, but the dream is real. You are a cool lady! Thanks Doug from Tucson Arizona….
Sadly I have no idea about the natural gems. But I really hope you will be able to go to Lviv as it’s such a splendid city! Thanks!
Hello Ms. Kami! Thank you for all recommendations.
I’m glad you found them useful!
Hi Kami Can you tell me if there are Christmas markets etc in Lviv I have never been and would hope to go in December taking the train from Poland. Thank you.
Yes, there is a really nice Christmas market in the center :) I think December might be a nice time to visit Lviv, especially when there is snow around! Hopefully traveling will be easier then!
A friend of mine from the Lviv area says wait until May when the weather is better and it would be safer as a USA tourist as it would be tourist season etc. I definitely agree the weather would be better. What do you think? New Year’s in Lviv with snow or wait until summer when the weather is perfect and there is more people around?
While Lviv is enjoyable all year long I would definitely wait until the weather gets better, especially for your first visit there. Either way, I’m sure you will enjoy Lviv! :)

Lviv – attractions worth visiting!
Lviv is one of the most important industrial, cultural and tourist centres in Ukraine. Its name comes from the name Lev, which was borne by the son of the settlement’s founder. Over the centuries, the city belonged to various monarchies – including the Kingdom of Poland, the Kingdom of Hungary and the Austro-Hungarian Empire, until their collapse in 1918. Since 1991, it has belonged to independent Ukraine, but the influence of many cultures can still be seen here. The architectural traditions of central and eastern, western and southern Europe meet in Lviv. The city’s complicated history is still reflected today in its unusual appearance and character. This unique atmosphere is just one of the reasons to visit Lviv!
Among the city’s highlights is the Latin Cathedral of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. It is one of the oldest churches in the city, located right on the main square. The windows feature intricate stained glass windows made in the 19th century according to designs by many famous artists – including Jan Matejko. The interior of the cathedral is at least worth a look – especially the beautiful 18th century Baroque altarpiece, decorated with marble columns and Baroque statues of saints. Other sacred architecture includes the Greek Catholic Church of St Andrew with the Bernardine Monastery, the Church of the Holy Eucharist, the Uspensky Cathedral in the Armenian Quarter, the imposing St George’s Cathedral and the Renaissance Church of the Dormition of the Mother of God with its distinctive tower.
Trip to Lviv? Check the must-see attractions!
On a trip to Lviv, you should definitely stroll around the market square. In addition to the Latin Cathedral, there are many other noteworthy buildings here. These include the Baroque Lubomirski Palace, which now houses the Museum of Ethnography and Artistic Industry. You can also admire many beautiful Renaissance townhouses – such as the Królewska, Czarna and Bandinelli townhouses. The Lviv City Hall, built in the classicist style, is also an eye-catcher and looks beautiful in photographs.
When walking around Lviv, it’s worth directing your steps to the former royal arsenal and the nearby city arsenal. These buildings are radically different, showing the architectural diversity of the city. Other highlights of Lviv include the beautiful, elaborately decorated City Theatre – a true pearl of eclectic architecture, as well as sculpture and painting. Check also the Ossolineum building and the Art Nouveau-style Main Train Station. Among many Lviv palaces these three should be mentioned as they are the most impressive: Potocki palace, the Latin archbishops’ palace and the art palace located in Stryisky Park.
Lviv’s cemeteries are also worth a visit: Lychakiv Cemetery and the Cemetery of the Defenders of Lviv. Lychakiv Cemetery, picturesquely located, has many beautiful tombstones of distinguished Polish and Ukrainian artists, scientists and politicians. In its separate part, we can find the Cemetery of the Defenders of Lviv (Lvov cemetery of the Eaglets)- participants in the battles for Lviv in 1918-1919 and the Polish-Bolshevik war in 1920. Some of the fallen were very young people, secondary school and university students, hence its name.

Dawie’s tour was the best theatre in Paris as well as informative!!!! He is great – even in the rain. Do it.
My group really enjoyed the amount of history explained in the tour, it was a nice way to get a lot of information on several of the key sites in the center of Paris in a compact amount of time. Excellent for orientation and background. I would certainly do other tours in the future.
