Story behind boiling hot water in hilly area of Manikaran near Kasol

On reaching Kasol, the first thing that I wanted to do was to visit Manikaran temple-cum- gurdwara . Though it is popularly known as gurdwara , there is, in fact an ancient Shiva temple situated at the site adjoining the Sikh shrine.

Even the place ‘ Manikaran ’ and ‘ Parvati ’ (river and valley) have their roots in the mythological story that also explains the birth of this temple.

The word Manikaran (in Hindi) comprises two words – mani (gem) and karn (ear). So, it means a gem that is worn in the ear-ring. Goddess Parvati used to wear the gem before it fell into the river (known as parvati; named after her name). Lord Shiva and goddess Parvati used to stay where the temple is situated.

At Kasol bus stop, one can easily find a bus to Manikaran every half an hour. After four km long smooth journey, the bus drops you at Manikaran where one gets awed at a muti-storey gurdwara.

At the sole ATM kiosk in Kasol, it’s mentioned that the nearest ATM is located 4 kms in Manikaran, that’s how I learnt the distance between Manikaran and Kasol’s piazza.

Manikaran is not a typical gurdwara such as the one you find elsewhere. It is far more magnificent and grandeur than the others. Also, unlike other religious shrines, this place, on entering, doesn’t transport you away from the milieu of region's surroundings.

For instance, the snow-capped hills and Parvati River that comprise the area’s beauty don’t turn out of sight even after entering the gurdwara’s premises.

On the other hand, the beauty of this place gets accentuated inside the shrine.

Initially one has to walk down a flight of stairs to reach the entrance of gurdwara . Moving further, one crosses a bridge over Parvati River (yes, inside the gurdwara), the strong waves – that seem frothy from a distance – can be seen banging onto the boulders.

The tranquillity of the area is so splendid that you veritably feel awe-inspired. The flow of river is quite fierce and somewhat analogous to a cresting wave that manifests its fury during the high sea. While I was walking towards the sanctum sanctorum of gurdwara, I was overwhelmed with the natural beauty so much so that I couldn’t step further at least for 15 minutes since I wanted to soak in the place’s beauty in entirety before prodding ahead.

Fifteen minutes and a few steps later as I entered the bhawan where religious discourse was taking place, what really caught my eye was that the gurdwara's bhawan carries the framed photographs of various Hindu gods and goddesses such as lord Shiva, lord Hanuman et al.

After covering my head, I took some prasad (lip-smacking ghee-dripping halwa ) and sat peacefully to listen to shabad . It was profoundly comforting to just sit there and lending an ear to the sermon.

The place is a symbol of religious harmony as there is a temple adjacent to gurdwara within the same complex.

The lord Shiva temple, however, is relatively quite small but still, it draws scores of tourists and devotees.

What is extremely jaw dropping is that boiling hot water flows across the valley and the legend has it that if you take a bath in the water, all your sins get washed away.

The gurdwara has even a pond that is filled with the same hot water and most of the devotees customarily take a dip in the water, or at least wash their hands and face, before entering the sanctum sanctorum.

Even in the adjoining temple, there is a water reservoir filled with the same hot water that can be seen (and ‘felt’ too if you exhibit some daredevilry) boiling and one can develop burn injuries if someone immerses a body part into it.

It is interesting to note that the prasad that one gets from the temple is actually the raw rice cooked for 10 minutes in the boiling water of the reservoir before they turn edible.

So, on entering, you can buy a small packet of cloth-wrapped rice. You can hang the packet with the help of an adjoining rope into the boiling water. After 5-10 minutes, you can take it out and the freshly-cooked rice would be ready as prasad .

The story that explains the genesis of burning hot water in the surrounding of snow-capped mountains is very interesting. The legend has it that the lord Shiva and Parvati Devi used to stay in this valley for hundreds of years. Once her ear ring fell into the river and she couldn’t trace it. Lord Shiva went to find it and on repeated attempts when he failed to find it, he summoned Sheshnag to fetch it. Later while searching for it, Sheshnag dug into the river surface so ferociously that ground under the river developed cracks and hot water started oozing out from the earth’s crust similar to the lava that comes out of a volcano.

Later, out of anger, when the ear ring couldn’t be fetched, Lord Shiva damned the valley and all precious gems in the river turned into stones. The only stone that didn’t become stone was the gem that the deity was looking for.

It is believed that the boulders in the river that we see now were, in fact, gems before lord Shiva damned the river.

Amritsar Golden Temple. Golden temple is one of the most important pilgrimage destinations in India. Considered as the ultimate place of the Sikh faith, the Golden Temple of Amritsar attracts a large number of devotees every year. Sikh devotees, for whom the Golden Temple is a symbol of freedom and spiritual independence, visit the Temple from all over the world to offer prayers. The Golden temple is also known as Harmandir Sahib, which means "the Temple of God".

Akal Takht:- The Akal Takht was begun by the sixth Sikh Guru, Guru Har Gobind as a symbol for political sovereignty of Sikhs. It stood as a symbol of political and military resistance against the tyranny and cruelty of the rulers in the 17th and 18th centuries. In the 18th century, Ahmed Shah Abdali led a series of attacks on the Akal Takht and Harmandir Sahib. On June 4, 1984, the Akal Takht building was heavily damaged during Operation Bluestar launched by the Indian Army on orders of controversial Prime Minister Indira Gandhi to evict a group of heavily armed Sikh Revolutionaries that had fortified the buildings as they had got an inside information that Indian Army is attacking Harimandir Sahib on orders of the Prime Minister.

Akal Takht and Harmandir Sahib, Amritsar , Punjab, India.Khande-Bate-Dee-Pahul or the initiation with the sword, initiated by Guru Gobind Singh, continues to be routinely performed at the Akal Takht. Hari Singh Nalwa, a General under Maharaja Ranjit Singh the leader of the Sikh Kingdom, wished to make the Akal Takht resplendent with gold and had donated a part of his wealth for this purpose.

GURUDAWARA RAMSAR:- Gurudwara Ramsar stands on the bank of the Ramsar Sarovar, near Chativind Gate, on the southeastern side of the walled city. After the completion of the Harimandar, Guru Arjan undertook the compilation of Adi Granth, the Holy Book, now revered as Guru Granth Sahib. For this task, he chose a secluded site. The spot selected was then a shady nook, one km away from the bustle of the town. To make the surroundings more agreeable, he had a tank dug which was named Ramsar after Guru Ram Das. Here, Guru Arjan composed his famous Sukhmani, the Psalm of Peace, and with Bhai Gurdas as his scribe compiled the Adi Granth during 1603-04. The present Gurdwara Ramsar, a small marble-lined hall topped by a gilded, fluted lotus dome built-in 1855, marks the site of the Guru's labors.

Gurdwara Baba Deep Singh Shaheed:- The great Sikh scholar and martyr Baba Deep Singh was mortally wounded here when in 1762 the Afghan invader Ahmed Shah Abdali ordered the Harimandar Sahib blown up and the Sacred Tank filled in. Baba Deep Singh, the greatest Sikh scholar of his time, took up the sword on a mission to restore the sanctity of the Sikh's most revered Temple. He along with five thousand faithful Sikhs fought against the Muslim forces of Jahan Khan. Although heavily outnumbered the Sikhs fought bravely. Baba Deep Singh was fatally wounded in the neck but had vowed to die in the precincts of the Golden Temple. Although mortally wounded Baba Deep Singh was able to continue fighting until he was able to make his way to the Amritsar (sacred pool) where he finally expired. Gurdwara Baba Deep Singh is located outside Chatiwind Gate in Amritsar. It commemorates the unrivaled martyrdom of Baba Deep Singh Ji who fought valiantly and dauntlessly along with thousands of Sikhs, whom he had famously dared to cross his line drawn in the sand, in 1757 to liberate Harimandir Sahib from the defiled clutches of Afghani invaders. Sardar Jassa Singh Ramgarhia constructed a memorial to the famed martyr. In the 19th century, Akali Phula Singh replaced the memorial platform into a magnificent Gurdwara. The Shiromani Gurdwara Prabandhak Committee enlarged and developed this important Gurdwara into the present complex in the early 1920s.

Gurudwara Chheharta Sahib:- , 7 km west of Amritsar is named after a well that Guru Arjan (1563-1606) had sunk. The well was so wide, and the water supply so abundant, that six Persian wheels installed around the interior of its circumference could operate simultaneously. Hence its name Chheharta lit. Having six (chhe) Persian wheels (hart or harta).

The well has now been covered, but its water is still pumped to feed the main tank of the Gurdwara. Now developed as an industrial township, Chheharta falls within the revenue limits of Vadali Guru, a village one km to the south, where Guru Arjan stayed during 1594-97.

Gurdwara San Sahib:- Is situated in the village of Basarke in Amritsar District, Punjab, India. Guru Amar Das ji was named next Guru by Guru Angad Dev Ji, but Datu Ji the son of Guru Angad Dev was, like Guru Nanak's son, sure that as the Guru's son he should be appointed the Guru. He forced Guru Amar Das Ji to leave Goindwal Sahib. Guru Amar Das is a humble person, returned to his family village of Basarke.

Here the Guru shut himself up in a small hut with a note on the door. The note said, "He who opens this door is no Sikh of mine, nor am I am his Guru." When a delegation of Sikhs leads by Baba Buddha ji found the hut they were perplexed as to what to do. Finally, Baba Buddha decided to make a hole in the wall so as not to go against the Guru's instruction.

Once inside they pleaded with the Guru to return to Goindwal Sahib as only he was their true beloved Guru and the Sikhs could not live without him. Guru Amar Das finally relented and returned with the Sikhs. The hole in the wall is still preserved today inside the Gurdwara Sahib. Gurdwara Sahib is situated on the Amritsar-Chaubal Road.

Gurdwara Baba Budda Sahib: - is situated on Chaabal Amritsar road. BABA BHUDA JI spends many parts of his life here. GURU ARJAN DEV JI also visited this place. Mata Ganga Ji desired her to wish for the son which GURU ARJAN DEV JI suggested she pay homage to BABA BHUDA JI and ask for putar di daat, Mata Ji got delicious food prepared and visited Baba Ji here. But Baba Ji refused to accept the food. Later Mata Ji herself prepared Missi roti and an onion (pyaag) and visited Baba Ji. BABA BHUDA JI blessed Mata Ji with son and told her that her son would be a great warrior and he will crush Muslim's head as he crushed the onion. And Later Mata ji and SHRI GURU ARJAN DEV JI were blessed with putar SHRI GURU HARGOBIND SAHIB JI.

Gurudwara Bir Baba Buddha in the revenue limits of the village of Thatta, 20 km south of Amritsar, commemorates Baba Buddha (1506 - 1631), the venerable Sikh of the time of Guru Nanak who lived long enough to anoint five succeeding Gurus. He spent many years looking after the bir, lit. A reserved forest used for cattle grazing, said to have been offered to Guru Arjan by Chaudhari Langah of Patti out of his private lands. According to Gurbilas Chhevin Patshahi, it was here that Mata Ganga, the consort of Guru Arjan, received from him on 21 Assu 1651 Bk/20 September 1594, the blessing for an illustrious son, the future Guru Har Gobind.

Gurudwara Taran Tarn Sahib: - is a Gurdwara established by the fifth guru, Guru Arjan Dev. It is situated in the city of Tarn Taran Sahib. It has the distinction of having the largest Sarovar (Water pond) of all the gurudwaras. Also, it is famous for the month gathering of pilgrims on the day of Amavas (No moon night). It is near Harmandir Sahib, Amritsar.

GURUDWARA GOINDWAL: - the first-ever place of Sikh pilgrimage so designated by its founder, Guru Amar Das. This, in fact, was the spot where the ancient east-west highway crossed the River Beas. With the renovation of the highway by Sher Shah Suri, the Afghan ruler of north India (1540-45), this ferry site became an important transit point. This led one Goinda or Gonda, a Marvaha Khatri trader, to plan to establish a habitation at the western end of the ferry. Thwarted in his endeavor by natural calamities which Goinda attributed to evil spirits, he repaired to Khadue to seek Guru Angad's blessing. The Guru deputed his devoted disciple, (Guru) Amar Das, to help Goinda. Amar Das, who knew that track very well as he had been carrying river water from this place to Khadue daily for his Master's ablutions, laid the foundation of a village that was named after Goinda. After his appointment as Guru in 1552, Guru Amar Das shifted from Khadur to Goindval. In 1559, Guru Amar Das commenced the digging in Goindval of a baoli, i.e. a well with steps descending to water level which, when completed, attracted pilgrims from far and near. Goindval also became, in the time of Guru Amar Das, the center of an annual fair on the occasion of Baisakhi. Even after Guru Amar Das's successor. Guru Ram Das had built up Amritsar and made it his permanent seat, devotees continued to visit Goindval to have a dip in the sacred baoli and pay homage at other local shrines.

GURUDWARA KHADUR SHAHIB: - Khadur Sahib is situated close to Goindwal and is only 19 kilometers from Taran Taran. The place is historically important as eight Gurus of Sikhs (link with ten gurus) visited it. It was the family home of Guru Angad Dev Ji. On the advice of Guru Nanak Dev Ji, Guru Angad Dev Ji spent his life at Khadur and made it a religious center. It is a place where second Master Guru Angad Dev Ji spread the message of God. Guru Angad Dev Ji introduced Gurmukhi lipi (script) as a medium of language at Khadur village. Gurudwara Khadur Sahib is constructed at a raised platform. Climb up the stairs to enter the abode of God. Gurudwara is built in white marble. Just after climbing stairs, you reach a verandah in black and white check theme.

The term Gurudwara means “Guru’s Door”. The Gurudwara is a holy place for Sikhs, where they go and worship. The Gurudwara teaches how you can live spiritually and morally in this modern world with the blessings of the Guru.

The Sikh temple Gurudwara is open to everyone irrespective of their caste, creed, religion, sex, faith, background etc. Therefore, anyone willing to visit Gurudwara is welcomed and equally treated. In the Sikh religion, it is believed that everyone is treated as same before the Almighty God.

Before visiting Gurudwara, you should know the dos and don’ts. Here is a list of doings which should be followed before visiting the Gurudwara-

List Of Do’s In A Gurudwara

• Deposit You Bags and Shoes While visiting the Gurudwara, you need to deposit your bags. Also, in most worshipping places in India, you’re required to take off your shoes. There are several counters at the entrance of Gurudwara where you can deposit your bags and shoes. Make sure that you have taken the token from them and kept it safe with yourself. Your bags and shoes will be returned when you hand back the token at the deposit counter.
• Cover Your Head With A Scarf It is mandatory for everyone to cover their head while visiting a Gurudwara. Women are advised to put a dupatta around their heads, and men are expected to tie a head scarf, which will cover their entire forehead.At the entrance of Gurudwara, you can find reusable scarf and dupattas for men and women. However, make sure to tie the headscarf properly, as slipping off the headscarf is considered disrespectful.
• Wash Your Feet and Hands Washing your feet and hands is considered an important step before entering the Gurudwara. Also, take off your socks, if you’re wearing them, before entering the Gurudwara.
• Get Prasad While entering the Gurudwara, you can get a token at a nominal price for the prasad. It is a structured way in Gurudwara to accept sponsorship in the form of Prasad. You can hand over the token to the volunteer, who will offer you the bowl of prasad. You can’t consume the prasad directly. You have to share the prasad bowl with the Gurudwara worker, who will transfer it to the big bowl. While returning, you’ll receive the bowl of prasad from the same drum. This reiterates Gurunanak Dev’s teaching on sharing.

List Of Don’ts In A Gurudwara

• Don’t enter Gurudwara with shoes or without a Headscarf Shoes and socks are forbidden inside the Gurudwara. Visiting the Gurudwara without a head scarf is prohibited too. You will not be allowed to visit the temple without a head scarf.
• Don’t visit Gurudwara under the influence of Alcohol or intoxicants The Sikh religion forbids the use of intoxicants like Alcohol, cigarettes etc. It is prohibited to eat tobacco or smoke within the premises of Gurudwara. You will not be allowed to visit the Gurudwara under the influence of drugs and alcohol.
• Don’t wear shorts There is a proper dress code while visiting Gurudwara, and visitors will only be allowed with that dress code. Wearing shorts violates the dress code and is considered disrespectful to the Gurus. Follow the dress code before visiting the Gurudwara.

All You Need To Know About Gurdwara Sri Nanak Jhira Sahib

Gurdwara Sri Nanak Jhira Sahib is a Sikh historic site. It holds a significant place in the religious landscape and people of all faiths cherish its importance. Bidar has a deep connection with Sikhism. The Gurudwara derives its name from Guru Nanak Dev Ji, the first guru of Sikhism.

History of Gurdwara Sri Nanak Jhira Sahib

In Bidar, Karnataka, the Gurdwara Sri Nanak Jhira Sahib formed in 1948. Guru Nanak Dev Ji, reportedly visited to Bidar during his second Udasi. At the time, people in the region were in desperation at the time due to a prolonged drought. However, Guru Nanak put his foot in the ground and water started flowing from there. The people got relief and no longer facing drought. Due to this incident, people began to respect Guru Nanak’s divine power, and his teachings spread across the region.

Guru Nanak’s touch on the ground to assist the locals caused the continuous flow of water, leading to the creation of the Amrit Kund. As belief, A single holy dip in the tank to heal the body and soul of devotees. Sikhs consider the pool a holy site, and they believe that consuming water from the Amrit Kund can cure illnesses and absolve sins.

Beautiful Architecture of Gurdwara Sri Nanak Jhira Sahib

The gurudwara’s walls and pillars are carved with beautiful patterns, and it is constructed of white stone. The design includes scenes from Sikh history. Furthermore a lovely canopy and chandeliers decorate the main prayer hall. The gurdwara includes a langar hall (community kitchen) and sarovar (holy pond). The gurdwara’s architecture is unique as it has Sikh elements.

How we reached to Gurudwara Sri Nanak Jhira Sahib

The Gurudwara Sri Nanak Jhira Sahib in Bidar was the first place my husband and I thought of when we decided to take a lengthy drive of about 100 kilometres one weekend. Around 10 in the morning, we left Hyderabad in a car, eager to begin the tour. We loved the beautiful splendour along the journey and the decent condition of the road. We were excited about the travel and the idea of visiting such a significant historical and religious place when we arrived at Bidar Gurudwara about 1:30 pm.

Things we enjoyed on the way to bidar

We left on our journey at around 10 in the morning, travelling firstly via the Nehru Outer Ring Road and then took exit to the Nallagandala Tellapur Road . Onto NH 65, which was a smooth and pleasant drive after that, was where we continued. We made good time heading towards Zaheerabad as to the excellent condition of the roads. However, we noticed that the road conditions deteriorate as we got closer to the Zaheerabad-Bidar Road. Despite this, we believed the route was appropriate so we took caution to avoid any potholes or rough areas. We enjoyed the beautiful scenery and the cold air that travelled with us on the trip.

Food on the way to Bidar

On the way, we were thirsty and wanted for something refreshing to drink as we make our journey towards Bidar on a hot summer day. Fortunately, we come across many shops selling sugarcane juice along the road. We didn’t think twice before stopping and drinking the tasty and refreshing beverage. A nice treat, the sugarcane juice not only hydrated our thirst but also provided us a boost of energy that kept us going for the remainder of the trip. We amazed at the greenery and beautiful views as we travelled further and enjoyed the beautiful sights of the area.

We noticed that food options alongside the road were limited as we made the journey to Bidar. In order satisfy our hunger throughout the journey, we made thought to pack a few snacks. However, Gurdwara Sri Nanak Jhira Sahib offers an excellent choice once you get in Bidar if you don’t want to cook or carry food. The gurudwara offers unlimited access of the lungar, its communal kitchen where tourists can indulge in a delicious vegetarian meal.

The gurudwara’s members dedicate a lot of effort and time to preparing the lungar, and they serve the food with the utmost respect and humility. In addition to fulfilling your hunger, eating lungar provides you a chance to experience the Sikhist values of unity and brotherhood. All things considered, it is an excellent option for anybody visiting Bidar and craving an excellent food.

Importance of Seva in Sikhism

Seva, or the idea of selfless service, is vital to Sikhism. One of the highest values in Sikhism is seva, which involves providing others something without expecting credit or reward. The first Sikh guru, Guru Nanak, created the concept of langar, a free open kitchen that offers meals to everyone who visits the gurudwara. Since everyone eats the same food, regardless of background, the Langar promotes equality and the elimination of social barriers.

In addition to langar, there are many other types of sevas that are performed in the gurudwara, such as washing the dishes after meals, serving food to visitors, and cleaning the footwear of those coming for darshan. These seva acts are performed with the aim of serving others and creating a sense of equality and community. Sikh culture places great importance on the idea of seva, which motivates people to serve others and improve humanity.

Things to carry while traveling to Bidar

While visiting the gurudwara carry a scarf. You need to wear a scarf to cover your head before visiting Gurdwara Sri Nanak Jhira Sahib. Due to the Gurdwara’s restriction on taking pictures, it is advisable to switch off or keep your phone on mute. It’s recommended to keep a container to fill Amrit Jal if you intend to take some home.

However, you can easily get the container from shops outside the gurdwara premises.

You can also get other items like scarf, Kada(sikh bangle),Kirpan from the shops located outside.

Inside the main gate of the Gurudwara, there is lots of space for parking cars and bikes, allowing parking easy. Flexible possibilities for parking are provided by the open parking spaces which are located on either side of the road.

Other details

Like all other Gurudwaras, there are no entry fees for visitors in this gurudwara. However, you can choose to contribute and donate money if that’s what you’d like to do.

Washrooms are also available within the premises of the Gurudwara. The Gurudwara administrator maintains bathrooms hygienic and tidy. Additionally, they provide many spacious and tidy accommodations so that visitors do not have to worry about finding a place to stay.

If you’d prefer to take the bus, the early morning service departs at 5 am and offers an AC sleeper experience for a 2-hour trip for about 1500 rupees. As an alternative, you may schedule outstation cab to bring you to the Gurudwara.

The Gurudwara stands in close proximity to the railway station, requiring a mere 10-minute journey from there. Trains from Hyderabad commence as early as 4:30 am, with the last train departing around 10:30 pm. Therefore, you have the flexibility to book a train based on your convenience. The train journey from Hyderabad to the Gurudwara takes approximately 3 hours.

If you decide to choose a flight as your mode of transportation, then the airport is situated 6 km from the Gurudwara, ensuring easy accessibility.

Gurdwara Janam Asthan, also referred to as Gurdwara Nankana Sahib , is a highly revered gurdwara that was built at the site where the founder of Sikhism, Guru Nanak , was believed to be born. The shrine is located in the city of Nankana Sahib . After visiting all the holy shrines, you will head back to Lahore for an overnight stay. After breakfast, you will head towards Kartarpur in Narowal.  Kartarpur is located on the bank of the Ravi River. It is said to have been founded by the first guru of Sikhism, Guru Nanak , where he established the first Sikh commune.

Kartarpur is close to the India-Pakistan border. The first guru of Sikhism, Guru Nanak , founded Kartarpur in 1504 AD. The name Kartarpur means “place of God”. At the location where Guru Nanak is believed to have died, the Gurdwara Kartarpur Sahib was built.  After visiting Kartarpur Sahib , you will return to Lahore for a night stay. After breakfast, you will be heading towards Islamabad. En route  stop at Eiman Abad to visit Gurdwara Rohri Sahib and Chakki Sahib.

This area has three important historical shrines of Sikhs – Gurdwara Rori Sahib, Gurdwara Chakki Sahib and Gurdwara Khuhi Bhai Lalo. After spending the night in Islamabad , today you will travel to Hassan Abdal to visit the Panja Sahib Gurdwara. The Panja Sahib Gurdwara is considered to be particularly important as the handprint of the founder of Sikhism, Guru Nanak , is believed to be imprinted on a boulder at the Gurdwara. After visiting the holy shrines of Panja Sahib, we will return to Islamabad for an overnight stay. We will transfer you to Islamabad International Airport for your flight back home. Pakistan is proud to be the cradle of Sikh heritage. After the Mughal’s downfall in the Indian sub-continent, the Sikhs took over India and ruled here for about two decades and during their era there were a lot of new additions into Indian history which are quite visible if we concentrate a little on it. There are endless monuments, havelis, forts and Gurdwaras which are now part of the major landmarks of Pakistan .

Jamrud Fort is one of the old forts built by Sikhs , the fort is at the main gateway to India (Khyber Pass) which was known as the first defence for India. There are also other forts in Shabqadar, Lockhart, Balahisar Fort, a fort in Bara, Michni, Bannu, Dera Ismail Khan, Haripur, Mansehra and Oghi. One can also witness the famed March 14, 1823 battle of Nowshera and located Samadh of BhaiPhoola Singh Akali, a general of the Sikh army who fell in the battle and was cremated on the site located near the northern bank of Kabul river at PirSabak.

ACCOMMODATION 

During the Sikh pilgrimage tour, you will spend all night in international tourist standard hotels. Accommodation at each of these hotels is twin-sharing with en-suite facilities. If you are travelling by yourself you will be paired with another single client of the same sex. It is possible to hire a single room for an additional cost. Additional hotel nights in Islamabad are also available. For hotel prices and single supplement costs please refer to the dates and prices page of the trip on our website. Hotels are subject to availability and prices may vary.

HEALTH & VACCINATION

You should contact your doctor or travel clinic to check whether you specifically require any vaccinations or other preventive measures. You should be up to date with routine courses and boosters as recommended in the UK e.g. Malaria prophylaxis is discretionary for this trip. Malaria exists in the area around Islamabad. However, incidences of urban transmission of malaria are extremely low. Dengue fever is a known risk in places visited. It is a tropical viral disease spread by daytime-biting mosquitoes. There is currently no vaccine or prophylaxis available and therefore the best form of prevention is to avoid being bitten. We recommend you take precautions to avoid mosquito bites

We highly recommend that you have adequate travel insurance for your trip with Trango Adventure. We recognise the complexity and variety of choices in the insurance market and know that many of you either have your preferred insurer or have annual multi-trip cover in place already. If this is the case, please ensure that your insurer is aware of your Adventure itinerary and can agree to cover the activities being undertaken.

GROUP LEADER & SUPPORTING STAFF

Pilgrimage Tour will be led by an experienced Culture Guide ( English and Punjabi Speaking guide). During the tour, the group will be accompanied by a full support crew.

From mid-June to August, we can expect to encounter temperatures as high as 40°C at Karachi, Multan and Lahore. Weather is generally good throughout the summer season, with clear skies and little rain or snow. However, weather in mountainous areas is difficult to predict, and short-lived storms can occur at any time.

PASSPORT & VISSAS

A passport with 6 months remaining validity at the end of your stay is generally required. The information that we provide is for UK passport holders. Please check the relevant embassy or consulate for other nationalities. It is your responsibility to ensure that you have the correct travel documents and visas for your holiday. Visa requirements and charges are subject to change without notice. You should have at least 2 blank pages in your passport for each country that you visit.

PAKISTAN  VISA

All nationalities require a visa to enter Pakistan . The visa fee is approximately USD 50 and you must apply for it before departure. To obtain a visa for Pakistan you will require a letter of introduction from an approved agency which will be provided by Trango Adventure. Visa applications can be made online or in person at your nearest Pakistan embassy.

School Visits

Planning your visit.

We organise and host many school visits every year to the Gurdwara from various schools and others who have not visited the Gurdwara before.

School visits can be arranged by email ( PLEASE GO AWAY! visits@ ealinggurdwara.org.uk ) with the following information. All visits will be confirmed by a member of our Committee / schools visits liaison team.

During the visit everyone will be required to cover their head.

All visits are subject to cancellations if other urgent programs like funerals are booked.

Upon arrival at the Gurdwara

Upon arrival at the Gurdwara, visitors should gather in the reception area where they can prepare for entry into the main building.

Visitors should remove their shoes and place them in the shoe racks, and please cover your head with a scarf. Please bring your own scarves to cover your head while in the Gurdwara, this a mandatory, however, hats & caps are strictly NOT worn inside a Gurdwara. We cover our heads as a sign of modesty.

No outside food to be brought on to premises including all adult bags should be free from alcohol and tobacco products.

Upon entry to the Darbar Sahib, guests will walk on a red carpet and bow their heads to the Guru Granth Sahib Ji, our Holy Scripture. A Sikh will bow their head to the Holy Scripture, but this is not compulsory for any non-Sikh, all we ask is visitors be respectful as this is a place for quiet meditation and worship.

Once everyone has walked the red carpet they should sit on the floor, and we will have an informal talk where we will tell you about Sikhism. After this, you are welcome to ask us any questions, and we will do our best to answer them.

On your way out of the hall, you will be offered a sweet we call "parshad." This sweet is made of wholewheat flour, clarified butter, and sugar. It is considered a blessing, but it is optional, and you do not have to take some.

On our way to the Langar Hall, you will see pictures of our ten Gurus, along the wall.

The Langar Hall is a Community Kitchen, run by volunteers who help prepare and serve hot food all day. All guests to a gurdwara are welcome to enjoy hot, tasty, vegetarian food. You are welcome to eat as much or as little as you like, all we ask is that food should not be wasted.

The purpose of the event is to provide an opportunity for WPI students to visit a religious temple, learn more about its significance, and gain a deeper understanding of the culture associated with it. The event aims to facilitate a learning experience that goes beyond textbooks and classroom lectures by offering a firsthand experience of the temple and its customs.
