Spend at least one of your days in Harrisburg playing at the City Island Complex. It is a 63-acre island and park in the middle of the Susquehanna River. In the Civil War era, the island was used by Union soldiers as a resting point before they crossed the river to defend the city from the Confederate Army.

Archaeologists have discovered that the island was used even earlier as evidenced by the artifacts they excavated belonging to the Susquehannock and Iroquois tribes during early settlement days.

The Broad Street Market opened in 1860 as a way to help feed Union Soldiers from Camp Curtin located nearby. Farmers brought produce, meats, and other items to sell in a convenient and centrally located area. Harrisburg is the capital and 4th-largest metropolitan area of Pennsylvania , with a metro population of 592,000 people in 2020. Harrisburg is known as the host city of the Pennsylvania Farm Show, the largest free indoor agriculture exposition in the United States, the largest annual outdoor sports show in North America, an auto show, which features a large static display of new and classic cars, and Motorama, a two-day event consisting of a car show, motocross racing, and remote control car racing.

The Susquehanna River runs along the western edge of the city. It is the largest non-navigable river in the eastern USA, but has numerous small islands, and is an excellent recreational resource.

The city began in 1710 when John Harris built a trading post and later his son started a ferry.

Harrisburg is served by a rather extensive highway system for a city of its size. Interstate 81, 83 and the Pennsylvania Turnpike, Interstate 76 all travel through or near the city. The Capital Beltway is comprised of I-81 to the north, I-83 to the east and south and PA-581 to the west of the city. U.S. Routes 22 and 322 also pass through the city and U.S. 11 and 15 pass just to the west.

Parking - meter parking is enforced M-Sa 8AM-7PM. The typical cost is $3 per hour with 15 minutes increments. Parking garages charges around $4 for 30 minutes or less and then escalating beyond that. Garages and metered parking are run by the Harrisburg Parking Authority .

By foot or bike [ edit ]

Harrisburg is a very walkable city, especially the downtown, midtown and uptown sections which are laid out in a simple grid without much change in grade. There are many beautiful walking and biking trails that run along the Susquehanna River. You can also walk or ride your bike across the Walnut St. Bridge to City Island without worrying about safety because it is blocked off to cars.

Harrisburg has been an important location for statewide transportation since selected as the capital of Pennsylvania in 1812. The canal system and subsequent development of railroads, highways and airlines in the early century played a key role in transforming Harrisburg into a commercial and distribution center for Pennsylvania and the east. The city is 80 miles north of Baltimore, 100 miles west of Philadelphia, and 100 miles north of Washington D.C.

• The Gamut Classic Theatre . Located in Strawberry Square, has its own Shakespeare Festival that puts on a few plays each year for a few weeks at a time. Tickets are $25 ($17 for students and seniors), with buy-one-get-one-free discounts on Fridays and "Bring Your Own Price" discounts on Sundays. During the summer, the theatre also puts on a free production of a Shakspeare play in Reservoir Park. The Gamut is also the home of the Popcorn Hat Player's Children's Theatre. Tickets are $6.

Home games for the Senators usually start at 6:35PM, and Sundays at 1:05PM, with box seats only costing $8 and general admission $5. The Riverside Village Park offers a variety of food from crab cakes to ice cream and is open daily from 11AM-8PM after May 13th. Water Golf , City Island's 18 hole miniature golf course costs $5.50 for adults and $4.50 for children.

Harrisburg’s authentic paddlewheel riverboat is docked on City Island and offers 45 min public cruises throughout the summer for $9 for adults and $4 for children. The Pride also hosts dinner cruises once a week or you may rent the boat for a private party. City Island also gives horse drawn carriage rides that tour the island and can be reserved for special occasions. Or you can choose to tour the island on The General , City Island's Civil War-Era steam train that is located next to the carousel. Harrisburg and City Island also have two working marinas to dock your boat, a sandy beach for swimming, volleyball courts, and a multipurpose grass field for sports and concerts that is available for rent.

Usually held about the second full week of January, the Pennsylvania Farm Show is the largest indoor agricultural event in America. See Champion Horse Pulling Contests, Sheep-to-Shawl Contest, Square Dance Contest, Arena Carriage Racing, Livestock judging and more. Many Pennsylvania Farm products are on display. SUSQUEHANNA ART MUSEUM

The SAM rotates its exhibits and installations 3-4 times a year, so there is always something fresh and new to see and experience.

THE NATIONAL CIVIL WAR MUSEUM

The National Civil War Museum sits on a hill overlooking the city of Harrisburg. On the grounds of the museum, you will follow a red brick sidewalk called “The Walk of Valor.” It symbolizes the bloodshed during times of war and honors the names of Civil War veterans. Also outside the museum building, you will see the Moment of Mercy, which is a statue depicting Sgt. Kirkland.

The museum’s collection includes more than 4,400 artifacts and 21,000 archival pieces. Exhibits include A House Divided, Campaigns of 1862, The Peculiar Institution, Battle Map, First Shots, Civil War Music, and more.

BROAD STREET MARKET

The Broad Street Market is a collection of over 40 vendors. Vendors provide locally-grown, organic produce, meats, baked goods, and freshly prepared meals. 

Founded in 1860, Broad Street Market is one of the oldest markets in the country. The market played an integral part in the Civil War, as vendors fed over 300,000 Union soldiers. This historical market was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1974.

PENNSYLVANIA STATE CAPITOL COMPLEX

The Pennsylvania State Building is a National Historic Landmark. You can take guided tours of the Capitol Complex , where points of interest include the Senate Library, watching a House of Senate session, the Main Rotunda, Senate, Supreme Court and House of Representatives, and the Capitol Shop. 

The guided tours last 30-40 minutes, or you can do a self-guided tour and explore at your own pace. There are food and drinks available onsite at the cafeteria-style Capitol Restaurant.

CITY ISLAND

The loop takes you around the city limits connecting parks, and museums, as well as a stretch of gardens and woods along the shores of the Susquehanna River. Many people use the loop in sections for hiking, walking, and mountain biking, and in the winter, you can find people cross-country skiing. 

FORT HUNTER MANSION AND PARK

Built on top of a hill overlooking the Susquehanna River, Fort Hunter Mansion and Park has had an interesting history. The park has served as a war fort, a hub for frontier commerce, as well as a luxurious private estate. Today, the estate and its grounds are open to the public.

There are guided tours available to see the inside of the mansion. The park surrounding the mansion contains 40+ acres to explore. There are walking trails, lawns to play games or have a picnic on, two children’s playgrounds, or you can canoe, kayak, or explore the river on a small motorized boat. 

There is a small gift shop on-site, a covered bridge, Tavern House, Centennial Barn, Hector Church, and the Fort Hunter Service Station. 

WHITAKER CENTER

In downtown Harrisburg, you’ll find the Whitaker Center , which features endless entertainment. From cinema features and science discovery labs to shows for all ages, there is always something to do at the Whitaker Center. 

Their big-screen features different movies throughout the day and changes frequently, so you’ll always have something new to watch. They always have a variety of live entertainment shows at any given time, which makes it the perfect place to spend a rainy or cold day in the city.

The Whitaker Center is also home to a Science Lab, where the public can explore the sciences and perform experiments.

PENNSYLVANIA NATIONAL FIRE MUSEUM

The Pennsylvania National Fire Museum is housed in a historic 1899 Victorian Firehouse. Dedicated to preserving the history of the fire service from the time of America’s Colonial days to the present, the PNFM is an exciting way to learn about the history of firefighting. 

Permanent exhibits include Gamewell Alarm System, Parade Hats, 1792 Hand Pumper, Memorial Wall, Patches, and Parade Apparatus. There is also a small gift shop on site.

The Alarm System exhibit features the Dauphin County Fire Dispatch Console that was in service during the nuclear incident at Three Mile Island in March of 1979. The Parade Hats exhibits include one of the largest parade hats collections and the Patches collection showcases almost 3,000 patches from fire companies throughout the United States.

The Memorial Hall honors those that have died in the line of duty by memorializing their names on 3/4″ brass expansion rings that have been cut, pressed flat, and engraved. The 1972 Hand Pumper is an early version of today’s firetruck. It is a single-deck, end stroke, two-piston hand pump capable of discharging about 150 gallons per minute, where water had to be physically poured into the wooden box. 

JOHN HARRIS AND SIMON CAMERON MANSION

First constructed in 1766, the John Harris and Simon Cameron Mansion has been designated a National Historic Landmark since 1976. Tours of the mansion are done by the Historical Society. 

Since its beginning, there have been several additions and restoration projects to the mansion. Points of interest on the tour include the Victorian Parlor with its legendary mirrors, Gen. Simon Cameron’s office complete with his own desk and cabinets, Richard C. Haldeman’s library, the Solarium, the dining room, the colonial bedroom, a Victorian bedroom, and the tour-de-force 1920 Art Deco bathroom.

There is also a small gift shop on site. 

PRIDE OF THE SUSQUEHANNA RIVERBOAT CRUISE

Built in 1988, The Pride of the Susquehanna Riverboat is one of the only six remaining riverboats left with an authentic paddlewheel in the United States. The boat is a replica of the riverboats used in the late 1800s.

The riverboat offers public and private cruises during the warmer months, as well as special event cruises, including Jazzin’ on the Pride, Classic Dinner Cruises, Sunset Dinner Cruises, Murder Mystery Dinner Cruises, Wine on Wednesdays, and Princess and Superhero Cruises. They also offer educational cruises. 

Millworks is a Harrisburg favorite for both locals and tourists and celebrates art, food, and brewery. This award-winning eatery, brewery, and events space feature local growers and local artists.

The restaurant and brewery seat over 200 people and has a rooftop Biergarten, as well as an open-air courtyard. 

INDIAN ECHO CAVERNS

The Indian Echo Caverns are one of the most visited attractions throughout the Eastern part of the United States. The caverns remain at a constant 52 degrees, and they were originally used for storage and shelter for Native Americans.

The caves have had many names throughout the years, including the Wilson Cave, the Hummelstown Cave, and simply, Echo Cave. Once the caves became commercialized, they became known as Indian Echo Caverns. These limestone cavers are more than 440 million years old. 

Tours through the cave run about an hour long. On-site you can also visit the petting zoo, picnic area, gift shop, and playground.  You can also try your luck at the Gem Mill Junction, where you may find gemstones, chunks of amethyst, jasper, calcite, agate, and more. 

DAY TRIP TO HERSHEY

Known as the “Sweetest Place on Earth”, Hershey, Pennsylvania is home to the Hershey Chocolate Factory, amusement park, museum, and much more. 

Hershey has been a fun family vacation for over 100 years. Hershey Park consists of rollercoasters for all ages, classic family rides, a Ferris wheel, bumper cars, swings, carousels, tower-drop rides, music express, monorail and so much more.

While the American Civil War never quite reached Harrisburg, it still changed the city forever. Located within 40 miles (64 kilometers) of the Mason-Dixon Line, Pennsylvania’s state capital was a major point of deployment for Union troops. Learn about the local history and discover some of Pennsylvania’s most prized buildings and cultural institutions.

Harrisburg became Pennsylvania’s state capital in 1812 due to its location in the heart of the state. Don’t miss the stunning neoclassical Pennsylvania State Capitol building, completed in 1906. Take a half-hour guided tour of the capitol to see the frescoes painted throughout the grand interior.

Explore one of Harrisburg’s most famous attractions, the National Civil War Museum. See 25,000 American Civil War artifacts in this museum’s collection, including rifles, uniforms and many Civil War-era documents. While some of the objects were possessions of Civil War leaders like Abraham Lincoln and Robert E. Lee, others belonged to average soldiers. Both Union and Confederate soldiers are buried in the Harrisburg Cemetery, located just east of the city center.

Harrisburg’s other museums provide information on the city’s earlier history. Visit the Fort Hunter Mansion on the site of an old British military fort built in 1756 to prepare for the French and Indian War. Take a guided tour of the colonial mansion or explore the 40-acre (16-hectare) grounds, which lie along the Susquehanna River. Visit the State Museum of Pennsylvania to see some of the state’s most interesting findings in archaeology and paleontology, including a mastodon skeleton unearthed in nearby Marshalls Creek.

To reach Harrisburg, take a bus or a train from Philadelphia, which is located about 110 miles (177 kilometers) southeast. After your visit, find more Civil War history in Gettysburg, a 45-minute drive south from Harrisburg.

Harrisburg is my city. I was born and raised here and I can say that Harrisburg has come a long way.

Some areas were a little too abandoned looking for my taste.

The town was nice, the ramada inn needs an overhaul and new management.

Pennsylvania Tourism Office Releases 2023 Happy Traveler Guide

Harrisburg, PA – Today, the Pennsylvania Tourism Office released the 2023 Happy Traveler , Pennsylvania’s state travel guide dedicated to must-see attractions, exciting events and a resource for planning future getaways.

For travelers looking to visit iconic locations, discover hidden gems, or take part in one-of-a-kind events and cultural experiences, the annual guide provides ideas for how to plan a #PABucketList vacation.

“A new year calls for new adventures in Pennsylvania that allow us to see the world from a new perspective and better connect with ourselves, nature, and community,” said Carrie Fischer Lepore, Department of Community and Economic Development Deputy Secretary of Marketing, Tourism & Film. “Whether planning a getaway to relax and practice a little self-care or checking off a bucket list item, this year’s guide is overflowing with inspiration to explore the unique cities, history, outdoor experiences, food, and culture across the Commonwealth.”

A recent survey shared that more than half of consumers tend to travel two to three times per year, while 24 percent tend to take four or more annual trips. When asked where they turn for inspiration for their trips and vacations, popular sources included word-of-mouth, tourism websites, and social media platforms.

Other than being knows as Pennsylvania’s state capitol, the city of Harrisburg isn’t exactly known as a popular travel destination. Hershey, PA on the other hand immediately conjures up visions of chocolate kisses dancing in the streets and is well-known for its theme park and other tourism friendly attractions. The funny part is that the two cities are only about 20 minutes apart from each other and both offer lots of fun and interesting attractions. With that in mind, we’ve put together the Ramblin’ Hershey Harrisburg travel guide that covers everything we think you should take in when visiting these two great cities.

Things to Do When You’re Visiting Hershey Harrisburg

Hershey Park is typically the motivator for anyone planning a trip to Hershey, PA. Once you are in the area though, it’s definitely worth staying for an extra couple of days and taking in a lot of the other sites and attractions that have been built up around it.

Hershey Attractions

Hershey spa.

Located inside the Hotel Hershey, the Spa at Hotel Hershey is a decadent and luxurious way to spend a half or whole day getting pampered. With several creative options like the cocoa facial, chocolate bean polish, and whipped cocoa bath, you’ll definitely get your fill of chocolate while letting your worries melt away. Whether you plan a day at the spa to recover from running around Hershey Park, or partake in a day of relaxation while the rest of the family explores the theme park, you won’t regret it. When you’re booking your spa treatment, make sure to ask about the spa lunch, it’s a treat you definitely deserve.

Hershey Chocolate World

Hershey’s Chocolate World is home to “all things Hershey”. You’ll find a retail shop filled with ton’s of Hershey merchandise as well as all of your favorite candies. Additionally Chocolate World features a food court, The Great American Chocolate Tour, a 4-D Movie, and a trolley tour. My favorite part of the attraction though is the Create Your Own Chocolate Bar experience. Why? You get to make your own chocolate bar, duh! The experience takes about 30 minutes and you get to do everything from adding your own creative mix-in’s to designing your own custom label.

Hershey Story

Home to the Hershey Museum and the Hershey Chocolate Lab, the Hershey Story is a fun and informative stop as you are touring through Hershey, PA. The Museum takes you through the history of the Hershey company as well as featuring a cool interactive exhibit that lets you see what life was like for a worker in the original Hershey factory. More than just a museum though, the Hershey Story also features an hour long class in their chocolate lab, that teaches you the history of chocolate making, and takes you through all the steps of making your own chocolate bar. If you are planning a visit, make sure to try one of the Countries of Origin chocolate tastings. We got to sample a flight of six different chocolates from around the world and see how different they all tasted. Can you say yummy!?!

Hershey Harrisburg Area Attractions

Indian echo caverns.

A trip to the  Indian Echo Caverns takes you on a surreal underground adventure. With hundreds of different rock formations, this 45-minute tour will leave you feeling like you’ve just visited another planet.  The caverns were used by Native Americans, and then later by early American settlers as shelter before it was bought and turned into a tourist attraction in the early 1900′s. Now visitors travel from across the country to see the amazing formations that are truly out of this world. The Indian Echo Caverns are located about 15 minutes from Hershey or Harrisburg, and tours run about 45-minutes.

AACA Museum

What was started as a collector-oriented museum by the Antique Automobile Club of America in 2003, has quickly evolved into an extremely well regarded automobile museum. The AACA Museum features over 100 vehicles on display from every automotive era in addition to a nice selection of motorcycles, buses, memorabilia, and the coolest display of hood ornaments I’ve ever seen. The museum is well executed with period specific vignettes that make the attraction friendly to more than just car lovers.

Pennsylvania National Fire Museum

Home to pieces of firefighting equipment from all across the US, the Pennsylvania National Fire Museum , was definitely one of our unexpected finds in the Harrisburg area. Our visit to the museum gave us insight into what life was like for early American firefighters, and really helped us appreciate how much firefighting has changed over the years. The museum features a large collection of firefighting equipment and other historical pieces, but what’s most impressive is the large and incredibly well restored collection of engines. The museum is relatively small and can be toured in 60-90 minutes.

Midtown Scholar

It’s not often that a travel guide will tell you to visit a bookstore. This should be an indication of just how awesome Midtown Scholar truly is. With over 4 stories of books, it’s a book lovers paradise. Add in a coffee shop, bakery- cafe, an in-house art gallery, and a collection of antique books and it becomes a “can’t miss” attraction. The Midtown Scholar has become a fixture of the local community in downtown Harrisburg, and is truly a sight to see.

Broad Street Market

Located in an up and coming part of downtown, the Broad Street Market is a fun quick stop for some local produce, baked goods as well as  a quick bite to eat.

State Capitol Building

Heralded as “the handsomest building” by Theodore Roosevelt, the PA Capitol building is definitely worth a stop. Offering 30-minute  public tours  7 days a week, it’s definitely worth checking out. While most capitol buildings are typically sterile and austere, the Pennsylvania capitol building is filled with breathtaking craftsmanship.

City Island

Located in the middle of the Susquehanna river City Island , is a hub of family friendly activities. With attractions that include  batting cages, mini-golf, an arcade, and even a steam powered train, it’s definitely a great spot for fun! If you are a fan of baseball you can also catch a Harrisburg Senators game while in town and get up close to the action.

Where to Eat In Hershey Harrisburg

Char’s at the tracy mansion.

Occupying a mansion that was built in 1913, Char’s is the only restaurant in the city that’s located on the Susquehanna River. With a romantic atmosphere and a fantastic menu that features fresh and locally sourced ingredients, it’s a solid choice for an evening out during a couples’ getaway.

Fenicci’s

Calling Hershey it’s home since 1935, Fenicci’s is a favorite of both locals and tourists alike. Featuring a traditional Italian menu combined with a few modern innovations it’s a nice stop for either lunch or dinner. The atmosphere is fun and casual and the restaurant features an entire wall of neat old broadway posters. The biggest draw however is the house specialty, the Upside Down Pizza. First introduced on their menu in 1947, this pizza has been a Hershey favorite ever since.

Located in historic downtown Harrisburg, Bricco  features a modern twist on classic Italian and Mediterranean cuisine. We found the food to be delectable while the atmosphere and menu kept everything feeling semi-casual and accessible. One of the best features was the fact that the menu rotates every Monday so they can highlight fresh seasonal and regional cuisine.

Suba Tapas Bar

In an interesting dining innovation, Suba Tapas Bar , is actually located on the second floor of the Mangia Qui restaurant. While Mangia Qui offers a full range menu, Suba features a large selection of Spanish style tapas , along with house-made Spanish style Sangria with creative herbal infusions. The environment is fun and causal and can do well for a couples’ night out or a larger group of adventurous eaters looking to try something new.

Momo’s Barbecue

If you are looking for a quick &  hearty lunch, or a place to sit back and watch a game, Momo’s BBQ is a great spot to do either. They feature some pretty serious BBQ, and their combination plates (like the one below with ribs & fish) are big enough to satisfy any appetite and still have some left over. Most impressive though is their extensive beer list   which features a solid mix of craft brew standouts like Troeggs, Abita , Southern Tier , and DuClaw .

Little Amps Coffee Roasters

Little Amps features two Harrisburg locations. One downtown for the Mon – Fri shirt and tie crowd, and the other in the Old Uptown section of Harrisburg that’s open 7-days a week. There aren’t many places on this planet where you can enjoy fresh roasted and ground beans in a pour-over while browsing through a carefully curated selection of new and old vinyl records. If you do decide to stop in and are looking for something different, try the Uptown Ginger Brown. It’s an espresso infused with ginger and orange zest and sweetened with a touch of brown sugar.

Where to Drink in Hershey Harrisburg

Home of craft beer staples like the JavaHead Stout, Troegenator Double Bock, and the Perpetual IPA the Troegs Brewery and tasting room is a must visit for any craft beer aficionado visiting the Harrisburg area. With a constantly changing seasonal rotation and innovative rotating scratch series, there’s always something new and delicious to try. If you find yourself having a case of the munchies, don’t worry, their deceptively named snack bar features a wide variety of tasty treats that pair nicely with their sweet suds. The tasting area also features a self-guided tour that takes you through the brewing process, and a small shop where you can find your favorite brews to go.

Appalachian Brewing Company

Open since 1997 the Appalachian Brewing Comapny   is one of the oldest brewpubs in the area, and after one visit, it’s easy to see why they are now 7 locations strong. Featuring live music and a solid menu they could easily be a great addition to any trip before you even get to the best part, the beer. With eight year-round beers and a strong rotation of seasonal brews, you can easily find a favorite. Not sure what to try? The Susquehanna Stout is an easy drinker with a rich espresso finish. If you are looking for something lighter try the Water Gap Wheat. It’s fresh, unfiltered, and it carries some nice citrus notes that make it pair well with almost anything.

Vineyard and Brewery at Hershey

If you are looking for a more “refined” drinking experience then you definitely have to stop by the Vineyard and Brewery at Hershey . Yes, you read that correctly, it says vineyard AND brewery. :-) You can stop by for a tasting at both the winery and brewery or if you want a more in depth experience you can reserve a VIP tour that takes you behind the scenes. The location makes for a great spot to spend an afternoon and they do have special events with live music as well. When we stopped in we found the beer & wine to be very well crafted by a team that’s not afraid to push the envelope and try new things.

A typical pet friendly staple for us, La Quinta offers a pretty good value and is a per friendly option that has no additional pet fee. Featuring two locations in the Hershey Harrisburg area, they are not as centrally located as some  properties, but both offer easy on/off highway access.

Candlewood Suites Harrisburg Hershey

Located on the North and South Eastern sides of Harrisburg, the Candlewood Suites offers a pet friendly hotel option that give you a touch of home for a longer stay. Gettysburg, PA

Located about an hour south of the Hershey Harrisburg region, Gettysburg, PA is an opportunity to relive a critical part of America’s history. A trip through the  Gettysburg National Military Park  will walk you through one of the most critical battles of the Civil War.

Known as the “Factory Tour Capital of the World” York, PA is home to over 15 different factory tours including snack food favorites like UTZ Potato Chips , Martin’s, and Synder’s of Hanover . If food tours aren’t your thing you can also check out the Harley Davidson Factory , see how violins are made , or visit an alpaca farm . York is only about 30 minutes south of Harrisburg on I-83.

Lancaster, PA

Lancaster, PA is located about 45 minutes Southeast of Harrisburg, PA and is home to the country’s largest Amish Community. It’s a great place to visit to take a buggy ride, get a peek into the Amish life, and enjoy some delectable homemade treats. Lancaster is also home to the Turkey Hill Experience , which allows you to learn all about how ice cream is made, and you can even visit their taste lab to create your own ice cream.

I love the picture of the Hershey Hotel spa. But what I would really love to do is visit those breweries.

The trick is to go to the Spa in the morning and then hit the breweries in the afternoon :-)

A fantastically written and well put together guide, not sure if I’d visit the Hershey Story though as it’s not quite my kind of chocolate. Saying that though, I did used to love an occasional bag of Kisses!

Great information and can definitely use as a trip planner for the area. The caves look amazing but i definitely would love to visit the brewery and sample some of their wines.

This is an area where I’d like to explore for a month, at least. I’ve been to Gettysburg a few times, and Harrisburg twice, but Harrisburg was always on business and we only had a couple of days to explore between destinations.

Barbara, It’s a great place to spend an extra night or two on biz trips and explore. There is so much to do in the area.
