The Ultimate Ireland Gift Guide

Every year my hubby, Joe, says he needs an Ireland gift guide so he knows what to get me for Christmas. He seems to think I am difficult to buy for.

He’s crazy. Anything Ireland-related is of course going to get him a gold star.

But there are clear winners when it comes to Ireland-themed gifts.  If I am giving or getting an Ireland-themed gift, it has to be evocative. I want to smell it, taste it, feel it.

It should immediately take me back to Ireland or have me plopping down at my computer to search for flights in anticipation of our next trip.

If you’re lucky enough to have a spouse/child/sibling/friend who is lucky an Ireland lover in your life, this Ultimate Ireland Gift Guide should get you sorted.

Direct from Ireland Gifts:

  • My Ireland Box :  Joe got me a three-month subscription last year (and then we kept it up!).  I absolutely loved getting a little bit of Ireland straight to my mailbox every month. Curated in Dingle and sourced throughout Ireland, these monthly gift boxes are something to look forward to well beyond the holidays.
  • Irish Turf : Is there anything quite sitting by a cozy peat fire in a pub in Ireland? Wait until you open this box–the smell will take you right back.
  • Connemara Marble Worry Stone :  Have you heard of the worry stone? It’s a sensory stone that you rub when you are worried to help reduce anxiety. I think this one is so neat. Made from marble in Connemara, Co. Galway, Ireland
  • Ireland Puzzles : I love these puzzles–they’re so vivid and creative. All items are made in Ireland with Irish artists. You get a flat shipping rate to the US so you can stock up. M ade in West Cork, Ireland.
  • JJ Corry Whiskey : Female-owned; only whiskey bonder in Ireland. This one is made for the mixed drink high-ball (soda, and lime juice). Yum. Made in Co. Clare, Ireland.
  • Salty Sea Sisters Map to Frame : I always dote on about experiencing local in Ireland. Well, there isn’t any more local than the Salty Sea Sisters swim meet-ups for women who want to take a dip on their trip. Add an adorable framable map with the beaches across Ireland labeled too…Love it.
  • Bean and Goose Chocolates : An Ireland Gift Guide wouldn’t be right without a bit of chocolate. Elevated chocolate for those who really like chocolate. I would 100% would recommend the three-month subscription box for Christmas.  Made in Co. Wexford, Ireland.
  • Handmade Soap Company : Soaps, candles, lotions, creams, oils. There are lots of options from the Handmade Soap Company. They’ve even gone international–you can order online at Ulta or their website has free shipping to the US on orders over $60. Made in Slane, Co. Meath
  • Be lleek Tea Cup Set : Light, beautiful. I call it my Sunday cup because I only get it out when I can sit down and actually appreciate drinking from it.
  • Waterford Crystal Whiskey Glass Set : If tea isn’t your thing, perhaps whiskey is. Isn’t this a beautiful Waterford Crystal set?

Ireland Travel Gifts

  • Travel Journal :  Do not go to Ireland without a place to write down all your memories and put your keepsakes. How beautiful is this one? It’s like a souvenir in its own right.
  • Packing Cubes :  Are you a packing cube convert? You should be. This is the best brand–durable, sustainable, and has a no-matter-what lifetime guarantee.
  • Road Atlas : Beware. This map is huge and amazing. Great for pre-planning/hanging on the wall. Simply fold it up to only view a small area while you’re traveling.
  • Adapter : Always go for a universal adapter with USB ports.
  • Rain Jacket : The best rain jacket. The hood has the perfect cinch and little lip that keeps the water off your face, and it rolls up quite small for easy packing.

Book Lover & Ireland Lover Gifts

  • DK Eyewitness Ireland :  The first guidebook you get should be full of photos and information. DK Eye witness does a great job with good pictures and just enough information so that it isn’t overwhelming.
  • What the wind knows by Amy Harmon : Irish h istory, a bit of love, a lot of drama, a few surprises, and oh-so-good. My favorite Irish-fiction Ireland read in a while.
  • The Gracelin O’Malley Trilogy by Ann Moor e: I picked this up a few years ago and can’t believe I’ve never mentioned it. Inside you’ll find an easy-to-read story about a young Irish woman who marries an English landowner to help her family during the potato famine era. As you can guess loss and tragedy are a theme but so are resiliency and independence.
  • Living with Ghosts, The Inside Story from a “Troubles” Mind : A new book by acclaimed journalist, Brian Rowan. Rowan knew all the players during the darkest days of the troubles. He was respected on all sides and gained trust few were able to obtain. The book tells his very personal story of going behind the scenes of war–retracing his steps during that fearful and dangerous time with us.
  • We Don’t Know Ourselves by Finan O’Toole : O’Toole’s memoir received critical acclaim for good reason. It’s a non-fiction book that reads like a gripping novel–grant he was born in 1958 in Ireland and saw his fair share of ups and downs.
  • The best of Irish Soups by Eileen O’Driscoll :  Oh my goodness. This simple little cookbook (could be in a stocking!) has the best Irish soup recipes. They take me back in an instant. I highly recommend the carrot parsnip soup (you may want a kitchen scale  if you don’t already have one).
  • Aran Throw : Cozy. Warm. And, oh so Irish feeling. Nothing like draping this over my lap with a hot cup of tea and a good book on a quiet weekend morning.

Stocking Stuffer Gifts for the Ireland Fanatic

  • “I’d rather be in Ireland” mug : I really would rather be in Ireland (and I think everyone I know knows it), but just in case they don’t. 😂
  • Ornament :  Isn’t this just the sweetest ornament you’ve ever seen? I want to decorate a whole tree with her ornaments. Made in Dingle, Co. Kerry, Ireland.
  • Key Chain :  A dear friend gave me one of these sweet lambkins after her trip to Ireland. I think of her and Ireland every time I head out the door. Such a great gift. Made in Co. Monaghan, Ireland
  • Magnet :  Let’s get lost in these dreamy Irish hills.
  • Tear Away A Day Ireland Calendar : A little bit of Ireland for every day in 2023.
  • Ownership Rights for a Bit of Ireland : Part gag gift, part super cool. This company owns land in Ireland and they give you forever access/ownership rights to a piece of it. Once purchased you get the GPS coordinates to visit it yourself (you can even pitch a tent and stay there!).

Let’s Reminisce about Our Ireland Trip Gifts

  • Barry’s Tea : Classic Irish tea–go for the red box for the best flavor.
  • Crisps/Chips : Did you try any of Keogh’s crisps when you were in Ireland? I love the Atlantic Sea Salt and Irish Cider Vinegar flavor.
  • Framable Map : Can’t you picture this hanging up in a room next to photos from your trip?

Ireland Clothing Gift Guide

  • Irish Tweed Cap : Joe has one just like this. Isn’t it dashing?
  • Winter Wool Hat : A modern take on Irish wool products–I adore Liadain’s colorful products. Made in Ireland from sustainable Donegal wool.
  • Aran Sweater : Classic. Cozy. Perfect for the holidays and long winter nights.
  • Connemara Marble Necklace : I love a simple necklace. This one is modern with a nod to Connemara with two small Connemara Marble stones. Gorgeous. (The whole shop has so many beautiful and affordable pieces).
  • Aran Socks :  Combine these socks, with a cup of tea and an Aran blanket, and you’ve got the Ireland Gift Guide trifecta. Boom, I’M IN IRELAND.

* Note: Some of the items in the Ireland Gift Guide ship from Ireland. Please order well in advance. Shipping and duty rates vary. Read the terms and conditions of each seller.

What an awesome list! I want almost all of them :) Actually I own the Belleek Tea Cups #15 and they are beautiful and delicate. Thanks Stephanie for putting this together and including many small businesses like me. I hope you get a little Irish in your stocking this year. For those last minute shoppers out there – I’d add Irish Whiskey or some Guinness and/or some good tea which you could pick up at the grocers.

Thanks Abby! So glad to include you. I love the signs I just bought. So cute!!! :-)

Please don’t forget the Burren Perfumery.

A stellar option to visit on the burren — I believe in Kerry.

Yes, the lotions and potions from the Burren Perfumery in Co. Clare are wonderful!! https://burrenperfumery.com/

What good taste! I absolutely adore the Burren Perfumery. It’s still on my original gift guide back in 2012? (How was that almost 10 years ago?!). https://www.infiniteireland.com/top-20-christmas-gifts-for-the-ireland-fanatic/

A couple of other gifts that I bought for myself and treasure are:

A silver necklace from Declan Killen jeweler: declankillen.com

A slate with Welcome written in Ogham. We bought ours at a craft market, but there are many available online

I love these ideas, Paddi, especially a sign with Ogham. I have an Ogham necklace that I absolutely cherish. ❤️

My Travel Journal was a God send, but the one listed here is absolutely phenomenal. Just perfect. My daughter and new son in law are planning a delayed trip to Ireland. It will be a perfect gift. So many other great gift ideas. Thank You so much. Linda Charlotte’s Web was favorite in this house. Loved it. Can’t wait for the photos!!

Welcome Linda! I absolutely adore that journal too–way better than the ones I try to cobble together.

Watch your email tomorrow for a pic of the boys–they had such a great time!! ❤️

I love my Irish linen hand towels that I bought at Kylemore Abbey. They are beautiful. I was not happy when a teen actually used one and left a red food stain (probably hot chip dust), but I hand washed it and it came right out. I also love my spoon rest with KA signature fushia on it and coasters with Celtic images on them.

Oh Ione! What a lovely souvenir!! I love Irish linen and would have been very cross by a stain. Ha. You handled that like a champ. :-)

Love your gift suggestions. I love fun items from Wacky Woolies and beautiful bronze plaques from Wild Goose. I’ve also purchased hand printed wall decor from Biddy Murphy Irish Gifts (thru Amazon). Best wishes to you.

The Wild Goose has some beautiful pieces. I will have to add that suggestion to next year’s updates. Great idea!! :-)

Thank you for featuring my travel journal on your beautiful site! I’m honored to be part of such a stunning collection.

Welcome Cindy!! It’s stunning and functional. So hard to get both. :-)

Love all of these ideas! Hope to visit my number one bucket list in my near future. Reading Ireland travel blogs is my favorite pass-time, yours by far is my favorite, Stephanie!

I’m looking for a higher price item for a retirement gift around $500. Any suggestions for someone with a boyfriend in Ireland, so they will probably travel there, and she’s also a book-lover. I may just make a package with a book, blanket, tea cups, lotion, etc. But I want to check in here to see if there is a single item you would recommend.

25 Best Irish Souvenirs: What to Buy in Ireland

Here’s your perfect guide to what to buy in Ireland, from the hand-crafted and beautiful to the kitsch and kinda cute. Roll up for this inside list on the best souvenirs in Ireland.

The Best Souvenirs in Ireland - Irish Souvenir Gift Guide what to buy in Ireland cover image

Table of Contents

The Best Souvenirs in Ireland

Wondering what to buy in Ireland that’s worth your attention? Ireland awaits with its glorious cliffs, the churn of the Atlantic, and a rich history that goes back to ancient times. Whether you’re taking a quick city break in Dublin or expanding your trip along the Wild Atlantic Way, you cannot go home without taking a piece of Ireland’s charm with you.

Luckily, the Irish know how to make the best souvenirs, with products ranging from fine whiskey to cosy sweaters and even marble. So, when you pack, make sure to save some room in your bag and put some money aside. It’s time to talk about what to buy in Ireland: the best Irish souvenirs.

Disclosure: on my most recent trip to Ireland, I travelled as part of a partnership with Globus: Ireland by Design. Some of the best souvenirs in Ireland that I’m recommending here came from that trip, a trip which introduced us to handmade goods and food through their YourChoice experiences. As ever, as always, I kept the right to write what I like. Otherwise, what’s the point?

Plan your own trip to Ireland

Ireland is a great country to travel around, either by yourself or with a group. Check out this week long Ireland itinerary over her e and discover what I thought about my trip with Globus vs when I travelled by myself.

Globus combine the best of both worlds with their tours: a group tour keeps prices affordable and provides lots of chances to meet likeminded people. But their flexible itineraries and ChoicesTouring concept mean that you can choose the activities which speak to you the most.

Ireland - ham and cheese counter in Galway for food souvenirs

Best Food Irish Souvenirs

The greatest thing about choosing food as a souvenir is that you get to spin out your trip just a little longer. Once you get home, you can sit back, pour yourself a glass of Irish whiskey and serve it with a slice of cheese and let the scent and taste remind you of all you’ve just seen.

Here’s what I can recommend you try…

best irish souvenirs - carrigaline original buttery cheese

Irish Cheese

With a land full of pastures, it’s not surprising that cheese is a big hit. One of the best Irish gifts you can get for loved ones is a full Irish cheese selection.

Cashel Blue tops the list as Ireland’s most popular cheese, with others close behind. One of my favourites is the Cnoc Dubh fresh goat cheese produced by Larry and Anne Maguire at their farm in Galway, so if you are on your way to see the Cliffs of Moher, make sure to stop here and grab some exceptional cheese for your return.

Irish Soda Bread

Irish soda bread is the staple of Irish food souvenir – and this is one you can actually learn to do when you’re there! Our Globus Choices Experience offered this as an option: locals teach you how to make the soda bread and then you get to take it with you afterwards!

You have to act fast, though. It only lasts for 3-4 days fresh. But it does go well with the cheese we just talked about. Just saying.

For a more intense aroma, try Irish brown bread while on your travels. It’s delicious.

Best Irish souvenirs - 40 tea bags Irish Breakfast Tea tin

Now, what scone or soda bread is complete without a cup of tea? Bring home Ireland’s passion for tea in a tin. Look out for Barry’s Tea, Lyons Tea, and Thompson’s Tea in supermarkets and souvenir shops. And a lovely unusual thing to do in Dublin involves heading to Bewley’s Café on Grafton Street.

Enjoy a cuppa and then stock up on tea, in bags or as loose leaf. Both are available.

best irish souvenirs

Traditional Irish Whiskey

All across Ireland, you will find old whiskey distilleries, one older than the other, where you can learn more about the Irish culture of whiskey, sample some, and get a bottle to take back with you to serve on special occasions.

From the old to the new, the famous to the obscure, there is a distillery for everyone. Check out the ones we found on this 8 day Ireland itinerary.

Irish Cream Liqueur

If neat Irish whiskey is a touch too strong for your tastebuds, which it frequently is, you can combine Ireland’s passion for alcohol and dairy with a good old fashioned Irish cream liqueur.

Baileys is a popular brand, known all around the world, and you can pick it up at duty-free shops in airports as a last minute gift as well.

Irish chocolate

Irish Chocolate

Ready for a surprise? While Cadbury was founded in Birmingham, England, it’s the Cadbury’s chocolate made in Ireland which has the better flavour (according to, well, chocolate lovers.)

The secret ingredient is the milk. Whole, natural milk that comes from Irish cows and goes directly into the Cadbury chocolate bars. They make great gifts – and taste good, too.

But in case you’re looking for a truly, truly Irish souvenir, then chocolate can still be on your radar.

Look out for Wilde Irish Chocolates based in County Clare, and pick one (or more) from their 80 delicious assortments. They have everything, from chocolate bars to chocolate boxes and hot chocolate. Are there any better gifts from Ireland to be found?!

Irish Honey

With small farms dotted across the country, you’ll easily find places to buy high quality raw honey in Ireland. And since honey comes from bees and supporting bees supports biodiversity, it’s a tasty way to support sustainable tourism while you’re there.

Also, it is not uncommon for Irish farms that produce honey to also sell candles made with natural beeswax that will spread a gentle scent of honey around your house. Combine these Ireland souvenirs and bring home the aroma of the Irish bee farms.

Ireland souvenir shop - sheep and Shannon knits, jumpers and socks

Best Irish Souvenirs to Wear

Ireland has some pretty special clothing and jewellery items that are practical as well as beautiful. Forget comedy hats, these Irish souvenirs can be worn for years after your trip.

aran sweaters

Aran Sweaters

The best place to shop for Aran jumpers is, as expected, on the Aran Islands, where you can buy them directly from the local artisans. The tradition of these sweaters goes back centuries when the women on the Aran Islands started knitting them to keep their men warm as they went fishing. Each family had a special knitting pattern created of Celtic knots that made it easy to identify family members in case a tragedy lead to them drowning and being found months later.

An Aran wool sweater costs around £200, so it is not the cheapest souvenir to buy, but it is extremely durable and unique, which means you can wear it winter after winter without it wearing out.

However, take into account that, although today they are made with the softer merino wool, they are still a bit scratchy.

If you want to spend less and still have your Aran sweater, you can buy a machine-made one. The price drops considerably, but they still look quite traditional.

Also, you can go for a hat or a belt, which are easier to wear if you don’t feel too comfortable in wool.

irish travel gifts

Claddagh Ring

Believed to have originated in Galway city around 1700, Claddagh rings are today part of the Irish culture. Some mothers give them to their daughters as they come out of age, while lovers sometimes use them as engagement rings or even wedding rings.

A traditional Irish claddagh ring includes two hands grasping a heart with a crown above them. The heart symbolises love, the hands, friendship, and the crown, loyalty. But what’s truly interesting is that the way it is worn can tell you a lot about the wearer’s relationship status.

For example, if a person wears it on their right hand, with the heart facing away from their body, they are most likely single and still looking for love.

The ring can also be worn on the left hand. If it faces away from the body, the wearer is engaged, whilst if it is facing their body, they are married.

You can buy a gold or silver ring if you are getting ready to propose or simply go for a trinket if you want a nice souvenir without spending too much money.

Donegal Tweed

This material was first produced in Northern Ireland, but soon became popular all around the country. It is used for jackets, vests, caps, and other clothing items. The most famous region for producing it is County Donegal, but you won’t need to travel there to find it.

If you want to have something truly special to remind you of Ireland and are good with knitting, buy a ball of tweed and make yourself a beautiful vest once you get home.

For the rest of us, it probably makes sense to buy one pre-made…

Best Irish Souvenirs to Decorate Your Home

There are no better decorations than those that come with a story. If you like to travel a lot, you can pick up a blanket here, a painting there and have everything in your house remind you of your travels. And Ireland can supply a lot in this department.

waterford crystal

Waterford Crystal

Irish crystal produced at Waterford is renowned for its exceptional clarity and purity of colour. You can have it embedded into a piece of jewellery like a ring or a necklace or buy it as it is simply for its beauty.

Since you are about to pay good money for it, it is best to check you are buying the real deal. You can tell if you are looking at a genuine Waterford Crystal if you can spot the Waterford acid stamp on it. This is not always the easiest job, as the writing is tiny, so you may need a magnifying glass.

connemara marble

Connemara Marble

One of the best materials the Emerald Isle has produced is Connemara marble. Found only along the Wild Atlantic Way, it is considered extremely luxurious and special, designed to be used for grand buildings like the Galway Cathedral. Or it can be bought by the truly rich at about £200 per square meter.

However, you can bring a small piece of Connemara Marble with you to decorate your living room or buy a piece of jewellery that contains it.

Irish Linen

Think luxury, and you will understand why Irish linen is such a great souvenir. As other countries hurried to replace the fibres found in the flax plants with cheaper, synthetic fibres, in Ireland, many manufacturers continued to produce linen, a deluxe material that was used to create the Egyptian pharaohs’ bed sheets in ancient times.

Irish linen is known for its resilience and soft feel. You just need to decide what you need it for. New drapes, bedsheets, or simply a handkerchief?

Irish souvenirs - hand made pottery

Irish Pottery

From traditional designs to innovative shapes and decorations, Irish pottery provides some amazingly unique gifts to buy while in Ireland. If you hit County Kilkenny on your Ireland itinerary, stop by the studio of Andrew Ludick to discover his works inspired by the artwork of Paul Klee and indigenous African art.

Great Irish pottery is also produced in Dingle, where you can find Louis Mulcahy’s workshop and products ranging from homeware to garden pots and urns.

Ireland - teach yourself Irish whistle book

Musical Instruments

If you want to buy some unique Irish souvenirs, why not go for a traditional Irish bagpipe (also known as the Uilleann pipes) or a fiddle to remind you of the great music you’ve listened to here? They can look great if exposed in the right room, and you can even give them a try once in a while to the delight (or horror) of your neighbours.

Ramp things up further with an Irish whistle or take the more sensible route and just buy a CD in which the professionals show how its doen.

Guinness Pint Glass

One of the best things to do in Dublin is to visit the Guinness Factory and learn more about this part of Irish history. You can savour a pint of Guinness right on the premises and, as you end your tour, you will discover a lovely gift shop that overflows with Guinness souvenirs. You’ll find everything from T shirts and aprons to snow globes and bottle openers, but many visitors go for a pint glass they can reuse with the Guinness they then buy at home.

irish wool blankets

Irish Wool Blankets

A perfect souvenir for many winters to come, an Irish wool blanket will keep you warm and toasty and remind you of your travels. Made from natural wool and dyed in natural colours, they make the perfect gift for a home that needs a bit of warmth. And isn’t that all of us these days?!

They tend to be quite large, though, so make sure to save enough space in your luggage. Or you can have them shipped home, as many Irish stores offer this possibility.

An Irish Cookbook

Will this be the first time you try a colcannon or an Irish stew? Buy an Irish cookbook and try the recipes at home. They are pretty simple in their essence, so you should have no problem cooking them to perfection, even if you have average cooking skills. And a lot of patience.

Best Irish Souvenirs for Your Mind and Soul

How can we talk about Ireland without talking about books, music, and art? It is a wonderful thing to visit the home of a great writer or artist and then buy one of their works right there on the spot. From then on, every time you read it, listen to it, or simply look at it, you will think back at the moment you bought it.

Books of Irish Authors

As one of UNESCO’s Cities of Literature, books must be high on a list of gifts to bring back from Ireland.

Make the first stop Trinity College in Dublin, the educational establishment for Samuel Beckett, Jonathan Swift, Oscar Wilde, and Bram Stoker, among many others. You can either walk through by yourself, take an erudite tour that includes the famous Book of Kells, or follow the tour that Globus picked out for us join a literary pub crawl instead.

Within the premises, you will find a bookstore where you can shop for books by Trinity alumni.

Elsewhere in Dublin, enjoy dusty bookshelves and brightly lit hubs and don’t miss a trip to the James Joyce Centre.

Irish Music

If you are a big fan of Irish music, you can take some CDs back with you and support local artists. Sure, U2 and The Cranberries are all on Amazon Music and Spotify, but it’s nice to support rural musicians and to help keep the beat alive outside the corporations.

Original Art

There are plenty of art galleries in Dublin and across Ireland but one of the best is The Design Shop in Dublin. Run by two women who fell in love with local design, you can find print art and everything from Irish Turf Fire candles to handmade jewellery created on the site.

Other Irish Souvenirs You Can Buy

And then, there are the fun Irish souvenirs. The gifts from Ireland that can make you wince or make you smile. Often further down the budget scale, here some more ideas for souvenir shopping in Ireland…

magnets

Portable and personal, you can find a magnet for every occasion in Ireland. Shamrock magnets are a great choice as they bring good luck to the person who receives it. Apparently.

crystal mugs

Quite frankly, there can never be too many mugs in a house.

And fortunately, you can find some really gorgeous mugs in Ireland at accessible prices. And you can find some, er, kitschier ones.

Mugs with leprechauns, mugs with shamrocks, mugs with the map of Ireland. Guinness mugs, Trinity College mugs… the list keeps on going. Pick one that will remind you of your favourite place or experience and drink from it without shame!

I know this sounds so dated. Why buy a postcard when you can pick up a mug or a magnet instead?

If you simply walk into a shop, buy a set of postcards, and shove them into your bag, this is boring.

But what if you send the card to your address and come home to receive news from Ireland? Or, what if you frame it? Some postcards are beautiful and extremely inexpensive. You will have a nice, personal souvenir, and some money left for other activities.

Christmas Gifts

We have a treasured tradition in our household of picking up a tree decoration wherever we go. It’s surprising how many you can find and then rediscover when it’s time to put up a Christmas tree each year. If you travel during the winter holidays, you will find many Christmas fairs where you can buy all sorts of traditional Irish gifts, from toys to handmade jewellery and sweets.

But don’t worry if you travel earlier in the year: The Guinness Factory stocks these from September.

Tips for Buying the Best Souvenirs in Ireland

Trips can sometimes be busy. You need to deal with accommodation, car rental, tour booking, ticket shopping, etc. Not to mention that you will hit a lot of attractions in a short time. It may be tricky to deal with souvenir shopping at the same time, so check out these tips to make sure you don’t forget something important.

Know What You Want to Bring Home from Ireland

Make a list of all the souvenirs you want to buy, including the items your friends and family requested. Then, do a bit of research to find where you can buy them, as some may require special stops on your itinerary.

You don’t need to completely change your trip, but you can make small adjustments before it starts.

Reserve an Irish Souvenir Budget

Once you have the list, you can take a look online at prices. If you want to buy expensive gifts, you will need to put some money aside for them. Handmade objects are usually pricey, so, as I have already mentioned, be prepared to pay good money for a traditional Irish jumper.

Look for Quality

Trinkets are fun, and you can find yourself buying a lot of them since they are everywhere and inexpensive. However, once you get home, you will realise that not all of them are worth exposing, and some will end up cluttering your drawers. Try to stick to 2 to 3 more expensive items you know you will cherish over and over again. It’s another part of being a responsible tourist.

Consider Shipping

If you are doing a tour of the country and travelling by bus or train, bringing expensive pottery or fragile items with you is risky. Imagine how careful you would have to be with your bag, always looking to keep it on your lap. This quickly becomes annoying.

Fortunately, many Irish shops can and will ship your goods home. Even if you are going to pay extra for the shipping, you can rest assured your souvenirs will get home intact while you can enjoy the trip without thinking about them.

Check the Regs

There are not too many restrictions when it comes to getting souvenirs out of Ireland. But, check with any transit countries and your home country about bringing food in with you.

Irish pottery is a type of ceramic art that is known for its unique style and craftsmanship. The history of Irish pottery dates back to the early Christian period, when monks would create decorative pieces for use in churches and monasteries. Over time, Irish potters developed their own techniques and styles, which were influenced by both traditional Celtic art and more contemporary European designs. Today, Irish pottery is characterized by its earthy colors, simple yet elegant shapes, and intricate designs, often featuring motifs such as Celtic knots and spirals. Irish pottery is often made using local materials, such as clay and glazes, and is fired in traditional kilns. It is a popular souvenir for tourists visiting Ireland and is often sold in gift shops and galleries throughout the country. Irish pottery is also a cherished part of Irish cultural heritage and is used in many homes and restaurants throughout Ireland. It is prized for its beauty and durability, and is often passed down through families as treasured heirlooms.

Irish Rosary Prayer Beads are a form of Catholic prayer beads used by Irish Catholics to pray the Rosary, a traditional Catholic prayer that involves reciting prayers while meditating on events in the lives of Jesus and Mary. The beads consist of a circular string of 59 beads, typically made of glass or stone, with a crucifix and additional beads for the introductory prayers and concluding prayers. The Irish Rosary Prayer Beads have a unique design, with the inclusion of a single bead known as the “Irish penal bead.” This bead, also called the “single-decade bead,” is separate from the main circle of beads and is used to pray a shortened version of the Rosary. This design is said to have originated during the time of the Penal Laws in Ireland, when Catholics were prohibited from practicing their faith openly, and the use of a full set of Rosary beads could result in imprisonment or other punishment. The Irish Rosary Prayer Beads are often made with green or other colors associated with Ireland, and are considered a cherished religious and cultural symbol by many Irish Catholics. They are used to pray the Rosary and other Catholic prayers, and are often given as gifts or passed down as family heirlooms. (Learn more about Irish Rosary Prayer Beads)

Irish soda bread is a quintessential and beloved bread that holds a special place in Irish culinary tradition. This rustic and hearty loaf boasts a unique character, with a golden-brown crust that encases a tender and slightly dense interior. The magic of Irish soda bread lies in its simplicity, as it requires only a handful of humble ingredients—flour, baking soda, salt, and buttermilk. What sets this bread apart is the use of baking soda instead of yeast as the leavening agent. When combined with the acidic buttermilk, the baking soda creates carbon dioxide bubbles, resulting in a quick rise during baking. The absence of yeast means there’s no need for extensive kneading or proofing, making it a staple in Irish households for generations. Irish soda bread comes in various forms, from classic round loaves with a distinctive cross cut on top, symbolizing blessings and warding off evil spirits, to variations that incorporate seeds, nuts, or dried fruits for added texture and flavor. Whether enjoyed fresh from the oven with a slather of butter, paired with a warming bowl of soup, or as a comforting accompaniment to a cup of tea, Irish soda bread exudes the heartwarming essence of Irish hospitality and simplicity. A staple in Irish breakfasts, these jams beautifully complement warm soda bread and scones, elevating the morning ritual with their authentic and comforting flavors. With a focus on sustainability and local ingredients, Irish jams not only tantalize taste buds but also reflect a genuine commitment to preserving the country’s agricultural heritage.

The Irish flag , often referred to as the Tricolor, is a symbol of the nation’s rich history and aspirations. Comprising three vertical stripes of equal size, its colors hold significant meaning. The green stripe on the left symbolizes the predominantly Catholic nationalist community and their desire for a united Ireland. The orange stripe on the right represents the Protestant community loyal to the British Crown. Placed between these two, the white stripe symbolizes the hope for lasting peace and harmony between these groups. The flag was first raised by Thomas Francis Meagher during the 1848 revolution. Today, it proudly flies over government buildings, events, and in the hearts of the Irish people, embodying the country’s pursuit of unity, peace, and reconciliation. The Claddagh ring  is a traditional Irish ring that has become a popular symbol of friendship, love, and loyalty. The ring is named after the Claddagh, a fishing village in Galway, Ireland. It features two hands holding a heart with a crown on top. The hands represent friendship, the heart represents love, and the crown represents loyalty. The Claddagh ring has a rich history and is often used as a wedding or engagement ring, but it can also be given as a gift of friendship or worn as a personal symbol of Irish heritage. The ring’s design has been around since the 17th century and has been worn by people all over the world. The way the ring is worn also has significant meaning. If the ring is worn on the right hand with the heart facing outward, it indicates that the wearer is single and looking for love. If the ring is worn on the right hand with the heart facing inward, it means that the wearer is in a committed relationship. If the ring is worn on the left hand with the heart facing outward, it means that the wearer is engaged, and if the ring is worn on the left hand with the heart facing inward, it means that the wearer is married. The Irish Wishing Stone is a cherished tradition steeped in Celtic folklore. These small, smooth stones, often found along Ireland’s pristine shores, are believed to possess unique powers. The ritual begins by selecting a stone that resonates with the seeker. Holding it, one connects with nature, whispering their wish or intention to the stone. It’s then placed in a significant spot, returning it to nature or keeping it as a keepsake. What makes the Irish Wishing Stone special is the power of belief. Throughout generations, stories of wishes granted have fueled this belief. Modern interpretations include crafting jewelry and keepsakes with these stones. Beyond being a charming custom, it’s a reminder of Ireland’s enduring connection to nature and its rich heritage. It invites us to pause, connect with the world, and believe in the magic of intention.

St. Brigid’s Cross is a traditional Irish symbol deeply rooted in folklore and religious significance. Made from rushes or straw, it takes the form of a cross with a woven pattern that has come to represent the ancient Celtic goddess Brigid and the Christian saint of the same name. The cross is typically crafted on February 1st, known as St. Brigid’s Day or Imbolc, a celebration marking the beginning of spring and the return of light. The process of creating a St. Brigid’s Cross involves weaving the rushes or straw together in a specific pattern. The four arms of the cross intersect at a central point, forming a distinctive shape that has become synonymous with Irish heritage. It is believed that hanging this cross in the home offers protection from harm, wards off evil spirits, and bestows blessings upon the household. The symbolism associated with St. Brigid’s Cross goes beyond its decorative value. It represents the triumph of light over darkness, the cycle of seasons, and the enduring spirit of Irish tradition. Displaying this cross serves as a reminder of the interconnectedness of nature, faith, and the enduring resilience of the Irish people. St. Brigid’s Cross is not just a symbol; it holds a place of reverence in Irish culture. Its creation and display carry on ancient customs and beliefs, allowing individuals to connect with their heritage and embrace the enduring traditions of Ireland. They also give insights on Irish history and culture, such as the importance of the Catholic Church and the Irish people’s resistance to British authority. “The Children of Lir,” “The Cattle Raid of Cooley,” and “The Tale of Finn MacCool” are among the most well-known Irish folktales. These stories have been turned into novels, plays, and films, and they continue to inspire contemporary art. Ultimately, Irish folklore and fairy tales demonstrate the power of storytelling as well as the continuing legacy of Ireland’s diverse cultural past.

The Irish language , also known as Irish Gaelic or simply Irish, has a rich and complex history that spans centuries. It is a member of the Celtic language family, with roots tracing back to the ancient Celtic tribes who inhabited Ireland. Irish was the dominant language in Ireland for many centuries, but its usage declined during the period of English colonization. The English language was imposed on the Irish population through various political and social mechanisms. As a result, the Irish language faced significant challenges, with many Irish people losing their fluency in their native tongue. However, the Irish language experienced a revival in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, driven by a resurgence of Irish cultural nationalism. Efforts were made to promote the language and restore its status as a national symbol. Irish became an official language of the Republic of Ireland in 1937 and has since been taught in schools and used in government and legal proceedings. Today, while the majority of the Irish population speaks English as their first language, there is still a vibrant community of Irish speakers and ongoing efforts to preserve and promote the Irish language as an integral part of Ireland’s cultural heritage. The bodhrán  is a traditional Irish frame drum that is played with a wooden stick called a tipper or beater. The drumhead is made of stretched animal skin, traditionally goatskin, and the drum itself is made from a circular wooden frame. The size of the bodhrán can vary, but it is typically around 18-24 inches in diameter. The bodhrán is played by holding it vertically against the player’s body and striking the drumhead with the tipper. The player can vary the tone and rhythm by changing the position and pressure of the tipper on the drumhead. The bodhrán is commonly used in traditional Irish music and can be heard in various forms, including reels, jigs, and hornpipes. It is also sometimes used in contemporary music genres, such as folk and world music. In recent years, there has been a movement to promote more sustainable and ethical practices in the production of bodhráns, with some makers using synthetic drumheads instead of animal skin. Irish lambswool  items are created from the silky, fine wool of young sheep bred in Ireland’s beautiful green meadows. Merino wool is highly valued for its warmth, resilience, and natural moisture-wicking capabilities, making it an ideal choice for a wide range of garments and household items. Irish lambswool items include warm sweaters, scarves, caps, and gloves, as well as household blankets, throws, and cushions. To make even softer and more sumptuous items, wool is frequently combined with other natural fibers such as cashmere or silk. Irish lambswool is distinguished by its inherent crimp, which gives it a bouncy, springy feel and helps it hold its shape over time. Wool is also naturally hypoallergenic and stain and odor resistant, making it simple to care for and ideal for everyday usage. irish travel gifts

I'm Aidan Geraghty and in 2018, I founded Gifts of Ireland because I want to bring the best of Ireland to you. I love Ireland. It’s my home. I grew up in the rural midlands in the ‘Bog of Allen’ on a farm. I spent my childhood walking through our emerald green pasture of rural Ireland on the farm I grew up on. My great great great grandfather kicked through those same fields. Whilst working up an appetite from helping my father, I would run into the house and wolf down the brown soda bread that my mother still makes to this day. I am a proud Geraghty. And a proud Offaly man.

I have traveled to all parts of Ireland from the Wild Atlantic Way to the Ancient East and my appreciation for this magical Island only grows stronger the more I experience it. I wanted to bring this story of Ireland to people abroad and at home. Our folklore, our history, our Ireland. And what better way to do this than through unique Irish produce! Every piece of Irish craft is inspired by our experiences of Ireland. My mission is to bring that story to you through quality Irish produce from local suppliers and makers from all corners of the Emerald Isle.

16 best irish gifts – top souvenirs from ireland to get.

irish travel gifts

The Emerald Isle is a breathtaking destination that has a good balance of city fun and countryside tranquillity. The country has a rich heritage and culture that’s treasured by all Irish folks. One of the best ways to indulge in this history, apart from visiting, of course, is by getting a souvenir from Ireland as memorabilia.

Souvenirs are also great gifts for taking back home to people who couldn’t join you on your Ireland adventures. Additionally, they’re great if you find yourself suffering from some Irish nostalgia after spending time in the amazing country. That’s why I created this list of the best gifts from Ireland to help you choose.

Whether you get a comfortable wool throw or a cozy Aran sweater, these are the best souvenirs from Ireland.

Here are 16 options to choose from when you’re looking for the best Irish souvenirs.

Where to buy: Aran Islands Knitwear, Aran Street Markets in various counties as well as on Amazon .

Aran wool sweaters are world-renowned because they look good and do a great job at keeping you warm. They were traditionally worn by Irish fishermen when at sea, and the stitching historically symbolized good luck, among other things. They are durable and will serve as a long-lasting Irish souvenir thanks to being made with 100% Merino Wool.

Purchase this chic garment on Aran Island, where it got its name from, or at several Aran Sweater Market stores. It’s also available to buy on Amazon in a variety of colors. The version found on the island is usually more expensive since it’s typically bulkier and hand-sewn.

2. Irish Kilt

While kilts have been historically associated with the neighboring Scots, they’re a part of Irish history. Both Scottish and Irish men wore them to showcase their pride in their Celtic roots. It’s one of the better Irish presents for anyone who has a love for Ireland and its heritage.

The Irish speak English, but sometimes it just doesn’t sound like it. They tend to have a very strong accent that might leave you dazed and confused. Plus, there are some Irish slang terms that only the folks in Ireland understand.

While you can’t easily train your ears for the accent, there’s an easy way to get the hang of Ireland’s slang. Get The Book of Feckin’ Irish Slang and act the maggot to leave your friends amazed by throwing out some of these hilarious phrases. Gift Ideas for someone planning a trip to Ireland

If someone you love is planning a trip to ireland, here are some great gift ideas they will love….

For the Music Buffs

irish travel gifts

Bono – artist, activist, and the lead singer of U2 – has written a memoir: honest and irreverent, intimate and profound, Surrender is the story of the remarkable life he’s lived, the challenges he’s faced, and the friends and family who have shaped and sustained him.

“When I started to write this book I was hoping to draw in detail what I’d previously only sketched in songs. The people, places, and possibilities in my life. Surrender is a word freighted with meaning for me. Growing up in Ireland in the seventies with my fists up (musically speaking), it was not a natural concept. A word I only circled until I gathered my thoughts for the book. I am still grappling with this most humbling of commands. In the band, in my marriage, in my faith, in my life as an activist. Surrender is the story of one pilgrim’s lack of progress … With a fair amount of fun along the way.” — Bono

As one of the music world’s most iconic artists and the cofounder of organizations ONE and (RED), Bono’s career has been written about extensively. But in Surrender, it’s Bono who picks up the pen, writing for the first time about his remarkable life and those he has shared it with. In his unique voice, Bono takes us from his early days growing up in Dublin, including the sudden loss of his mother when he was 14, to U2’s unlikely journey to become one of the world’s most influential rock bands, to his more than 20 years of activism dedicated to the fight against AIDS and extreme poverty. Writing with candor, self-reflection, and humor, Bono opens the aperture on his life — and the family, friends and faith that have sustained, challenged and shaped him.

Surrender’s subtitle, “40 Songs, One Story,” is a nod to the book’s 40 chapters, which are each named after a U2 song. Bono has also created 40 original drawings for Surrender which will appear throughout the book.

For those interested in Irish folklore

irish travel gifts

In this people’s history of Ireland, John Creedon introduces a fascinating collection of stories from the Schools’ Collection. This treasure trove of old stories, ways, and wisdom, which could have been lost forever, was collected by schoolchildren as part of a nationwide project set up in the 1930s to preserve Irish folklore.

Published here for the first time, this ‘best of’ selection includes chapters on ghost stories, agriculture, forgotten trades, schooling, and pastimes. The result is an incredible arc of folk history that tells us about ourselves and how we lived long ago.

Boring but Essential!

For those interested in Irish History

The Irish Civil War in Colour

Here is the story of Ireland’s Civil War in colour – a defining moment in Irish history brought to life for the first time in hand-coloured photographs. The events of 1922–1923 are revealed using photographs painstakingly hand-coloured by John O’Byrne. His attention to detail gives a vivid authenticity that brings the events alive. Many of these photographs, carefully selected from archives and private collections, have never been published before. They carry informative captions by Michael B. Barry, based on extensive historical research.

This richly illustrated book gives a fresh perspective to the conflict. If you want a better understanding of the story of the Irish Civil War, this is the book for you.

IRISH GIFTS FOR HER

Hi, I’m Christine – a full-time traveler and career woman. Although I’m from the Philippines, my location independent career took me to over 40 countries for the past 8 years. I also lived in 3 continents – from the Caribbean, South East Asia to Africa. But despite living in several countries, my love for Ireland remains the same. A country that had been a part of my life since I was 14 because of my love for Irish music and bands. Ireland Travel Guides was born because of this passion and hopefully, in some little ways, this website will be able to help you on your next trip to Ireland.
