14 Best Senior-friendly Travel Groups

These senior-friendly travel companies offer tours and travel experiences as diverse as their clients.

hiking trips for singles over 50

The benefits of travel, whether it's a refreshing weekend getaway or a month-long trip to a new destination, are undeniable. And for retirees and seniors who have time and a travel budget, the opportunities are nearly endless — their own city, state, country, and even the whole world are all waiting to be explored.

It should be recognized that seniors are as diverse as any other generation, perhaps even more so as their years of experience have taken them in many directions. While their interests, abilities, values, and habits may vary, it can safely be said that for many, travel is in their plans.

Seniors travel to visit family, learn about the countries of their ancestors , or explore new destinations. Many seek immersive experiences, educational opportunities, or adventure. And travel companies are responding to their needs and wishes by offering tour options ranging from independent to fully guided, budget to luxury, and group to individual. The 14 organizations listed below are either aimed specifically at mature clients or feature experiences that are flexible enough to accommodate a variety of travelers.

Walking the World

Operating out of Grand Junction, Colorado, Walking the World offers walking and hiking tours mainly for travelers over the age of 50 who want to be immersed in the destinations they choose. Experienced hikers will enjoy its Rocky Mountain National Park tour , for example, with treks of up to 10 miles on some days during the eight-day itinerary. Meanwhile, the Ireland trip covers 11 days of exploring fishing villages, rolling green hills, the stunning Cliffs of Moher, the Dingle Peninsula, and Killarney National Park. Daily walks range from four to eight miles and are described as gentle to moderate.

Road Scholar

Originally launched as Elderhostel in 1975, the company rebranded in 2010 as Road Scholar , recognizing the values and interests of lifelong learners who have participated in their lectures, tours, field trips, and educational experiences over the years. Participants are typically over the age of 50 and ready to learn from travel or focus on a specific interest. Trip themes such as grandparent adventures (special types of trips you can take with your grandchild), cruises, urban exploration, art and history, historical sites, and academic topics can be browsed by destination, activity level, and interest to help clients select their ideal tour experience.

Adventures Abroad

While Adventures Abroad largely caters to travelers over 50, tours are open to adults of all ages, and operate on every continent except for Antarctica. The company's "soft adventure" trips, which concentrate on the culture and history of a destination, don't include strenuous activities, though a reasonable degree of fitness and the ability to walk are required. Trips are rated from one to three based on physical activity, with the first level featuring only leisurely walks and level two meaning more time on your feet each day. Level-three trips might include walks or hikes on uneven ground for three to seven hours, though at a leisurely pace. Specific trips are suggested for each activity level for easy planning.

An adventure travel company designed for people ages 50 and over, ElderTreks offers small-group adventures — think wildlife safaris, hiking trips, cultural journeys, and other unique expeditions — in more than 100 countries. The tours are rated by activity level, ranging from one to five. At level one, travelers should be able to walk for one to two hours, whereas at level five, they'll need to be capable of hiking for eight to 10 hours.

Senior Cycling

Specializing in bicycle tours for active adults ages 50 and up, Senior Cycling limits groups to a maximum of 13 participants. And they are always accompanied by the "sag wagon" in case someone needs a break from riding. Trips are rated at two levels: intermediate (for the occasional rider who prefers bike paths and flat terrain for 20–40 miles per day) and advanced (for those who are at ease with up to 50 miles per day, hills, and traffic). Custom tours can also be arranged for families or groups of friends.

Firebird Tours

With a focus on clients ages 50 and over, Firebird Tours offers small group trips to destinations in Europe, Asia, and the Middle East that deliver value, comfort, and quality. Themes for guided tours include gastronomy, history, architecture, and the Northern Lights , as well as theater and opera. Private family tours are also available, with destinations and activities suitable for a wider age range depending on the group.

Seniors interested in active vacations should check out Backroads , based out of Berkeley, California. While tours are open to all ages, the majority of participants tend to be over 50. Guided biking, walking, and hiking tours to a variety of destinations are geared toward adults, but also include options for families traveling with "teens and kids," "older teens and 20s," and those in their "20s and beyond." The company's Dolce Tempo tours offer a more relaxed pace, and include trips such as the Easygoing E-bike Tour in California wine country and the Easygoing Multi-adventure Tour in New Zealand.

Overseas Adventure Travel

With a variety of trips available to destinations on every continent, Overseas Adventure Travel makes a great choice if you're interested in seeing the world via small-ship cruises. In addition to guided land tours for groups of eight to 16, OAT offers sailings through the Norwegian Fjords, along West Africa's coast, and throughout the Mediterranean and Adriatic Seas. Mature travelers are often attracted to the flexibility of the trips and the ability to personalize activities. Recognizing that many of their customers travel alone — including a whopping 85 percent of their female clients — the company has created its getaways with solo travelers in mind, whether they're first-timers or experienced adventurers.

EF Go Ahead Tours

Operating out of Cambridge, Massachusetts, EF Go Ahead Tours offers a selection of small group tours for 10 to 22 guests. The senior-friendly trips focus on interests such as food and wine, adventure, and safaris, as well as specific destinations and seasonal events (think Oktoberfest in Germany, annual holiday markets in Europe, or St. Patrick's Day in Ireland). Traveling alone? The company's solo tours provide private rooms and personalized experiences especially geared toward those traveling by themselves. Clients can also gather their own group and take advantage of the services of EF's professional coordinators.

Kensington Tours

If you're looking to create a fully customized, privately guided trip based on your group's specific needs and travel preferences, look no further than Kensington Tours . Their expertise in more than 100 destinations worldwide makes planning easy, whether the goal is a culturally immersive experience, enjoying fine wine and dining, discovering the history of a place, or relaxation. While these arrangements are ideal for mature travelers who appreciate ease and luxury, the company also provides experiences for multigenerational travel in countries like Thailand, Japan, Iceland, and South Africa, featuring kid-friendly trips that come with private vehicles, local guides, and dining options fit for the whole family.

Intrepid Travel

A leading adventure tour operator known for its efforts to make travel accessible to all, Intrepid Travel offers a good mix of bespoke and ready-made itinerary options that can be adapted to suit your group's comfort level. Intrepid's Accessible Tours are especially inclusive, with trips that are designed for every type of traveler. Whichever trip you decide to book, you'll have access to local destination specialists to help you choose the perfect places to stay as well as organize transportation, activities, and guided tours, depending on your needs. The company's Walking & Trekking trips, suitable for a range of fitness levels, are especially popular with seniors, though adults of all ages are free to join in.

YMT Vacations

In business since 1967, YMT Vacations designs all-inclusive trips with mature travelers in mind. Prices cover hotel accommodations, guided sightseeing tours, baggage handling, and the expertise of tour directors and driver guides. Destinations include Hawaii, Alaska, Europe, North America, Central and South America, Africa, Asia, Australia, and New Zealand, among others, and the company arranges travel for popular events such as the Rose Parade in California. A number of river cruise and transatlantic sailing options are also available.

Grand European Travel

Grand European Travel is an AARP-preferred travel provider (check the website for members-only discounts) that promotes itself as a one-stop shop to help clients plan their desired travel experiences. The company represents a collection of 30 travel brands — including the likes of Trafalgar and Insight Tours — which, altogether, cover seven continents. Offerings range from budget to luxury getaways, and everything from cruises to land tours. Thinking of taking a multigenerational trip? Browse the company's family experiences section, stocked with tours fit for all ages, whether you're into all-inclusive European river cruises or exploring U.S. national parks.

Country Walkers

Country Walkers aims to introduce travelers to new landscapes and cultures around the world by traveling on foot. Established in 1979, the Vermont-based operator offers walking tours in Europe, Asia, Africa, North America, and South America. Tour types include guided (in a small group of up to 18) and self-guided (in a private group of up to 12), providing a great option for independent exploration. Travelers can choose from five levels, starting at "easy walking," which includes a daily distance of two to six miles for up to four hours per day. "Moderate walking," the mid-range option, suggests four to 10 miles and up to six hours of walking per day. Trips at the "challenging walking" level might go up to seven hours a day on foot, covering anywhere from six to 14 miles. Guests of all ages should be able to find a destination and tour that's best suited for their interests and fitness level.

The Best Hiking Trips for Singles

Women sitting on a rock

4 reasons singles should book a guided Ryder-Walker trek!

For years, Ryder-Walker has attracted couples, groups of friends and families to join our acclaimed guided treks around the world. Today, Ryder-Walker guided tours have become the perfect way for singles to hit the trails, meet new people and see the world! Whether you are traveling for work and have an extra week to explore the mountains or are just looking for the perfect getaway, a Ryder-Walker guided tour is the ideal way to escape the day-to-day.

Hiking Trips for Singles

Last summer I guided a hiking tour that consisted of a group of women who were all lifelong friends, people that every year would gather for an annual Ryder-Walker tour. They were joined by a single woman who knew none of them but was excited to take the chance on getting to know a new group of fellow hikers. After a week of dedicated hiking with evenings sipping wine and enjoying Aperol Spritz happy hours, we had circumnavigated the Matterhorn and were entering the village of Zermatt when she expressed to me how much she had grown to appreciate her new hiking friends. As we were all leaving Zermatt, the ladies invited her to return with them on another hiking tour and she was excited for the chance to reconvene with them next summer!

This is just one example; every trip new friendships are made, some of which last a lifetime. Some trekkers have even met their partners on Ryder-Walker tours! Our clients are a special group of people who love to hike and explore – all have a good sense of the world.

Peace and Quiet

Is work starting to grate after a long winter? Do you need a break from the sights and sounds if the city? Are you craving a bit of alone time from your busy family schedule? Whatever the reason, now is the time to start planning your getaway. One of the most peaceful experiences to be had on a Ryder-Walker tour is the opportunity to get a moment of true bliss by yourself.

Whether you are marveling at one of the magnificent waterfalls above Grindelwald in Switzerland or finishing the last few meditative steps up one of the high passes around the Tour du Mont Blanc , the true joy of our trips is often a combination of quiet time and the unique sense of freedom whether achieved high on a mountain or along calming coastal waters. When you finish the day relaxing at one of the many excellent spas in our favorite hotels you will be happy you took the chance to really give yourself a break!

Set Your Goals

Finally, we believe that one of the most important elements of Ryder-Walker tours is the chance to set your own goals and challenge yourself. Especially when hiking as a single, you get the chance to define your own goals – whether you want to push yourself or relax is up to you based on the day. Many Ryder-Walker tours offer the opportunity to choose more challenging hiking options . Often these longer options take you by high alpine lakes, to unique high huts that serve coffee and delicious lunches, and to windswept summits. Whether you are pushing yourself to reach a summit or just hoping to get some extra steps in – you get to challenge yourself and feel the exhilaration of setting a goal and achieving it!

Open Yourself up to New Adventures

Planning hiking trips for singles from start to finish can be daunting and time consuming. Book a Ryder-Walker trek and leave everything to us – simply choose what adventure you want to do this year and we’ll handle the rest. Our staff takes care of the back-end details and our guides handle all the logistics on and off the trail. All you have to do is grab your gear and show up ready to hike, explore and have the time of your life.

Hiking Over 50: 12 Things to Know Before Your First Trek

hiking trips for singles over 50

  • Activities and Interests
  • Outdoor Activities

Enough can’t be said about the benefits of walking. It increases your heart and lung fitness, decreases the risk of heart attack and stroke, makes your bones stronger, and gives you better balance. The list goes on and on.

Now, add a little scenery to that walk — mountain streams, breathtaking vistas, sparkling waterfalls — and you have the added bonus of stress relief, lowering your risk of depression, and calming your anxieties.

Sounds great, doesn’t it? For those of us over 50, there are several things you need to consider before lacing up those boots and hitting the trail, everything from planning your trip, knowing what to carry, and most importantly, how to get your body ready for the trail.

Here are 12 tips to help you get on the trail and take your first hike. Remember, these are tips for getting ready for your first day hike, not an overnight or extended backpacking trip.

1. Check With Your Doctor Beforehand

It doesn’t matter what your age is, you should always check with your doctor before doing any strenuous activity, especially if you have lived a sedentary lifestyle which many of us did during the pandemic.

Items to prepare for a treck.

2. Plan, Plan, Plan

Got the “all clear” from the doctor? Don’t lace up the boots quite yet. A common mistake made by first-time hikers is reading in a guidebook or online about a hike with incredible landscapes and just go for it only to find the terrain is too much for them to handle.

Don’t fall into that trap. Getting in shape for a hike is as easy as taking a walk. Start by taking a daily stroll around your neighborhood, gradually building up the length and speed of the walk. Eventually, add a few hills. If you live in a flat area, find some stairs to climb.

As you build your stamina and strength, you may want to consider loading your day pack and wearing it on your walk to help strengthen your back muscles. There are also some excellent exercises that you can do at home to get you ready for your adventures.

3. Pack Wisely

Even though we are only focusing on day hiking and not a long distance hike through a wilderness, you still need to pack some essentials to make the hike more enjoyable and keep you safe.

If you are doing a simple hike of only an hour or two, a fanny pack with a few energy snacks and bottles of water (more on that in a moment) will do. For a full-day hike, get yourself a good quality day pack. Don’t skimp on this. Get a quality pack that can be fitted to your body. You and your back will thank me later. Your local outfitter can help you make the right choice.

What do you pack? Here is a list of a few essentials you should have with you:

  • Plenty of energy snacks and lunch plus extra portions in case of emergency
  • Plenty of water (see # 4)
  • Navigation tools like map and compass, GPS, cell phone (with caveats. See # 7)
  • Small first-aid kit
  • Weather appropriate clothing (think dressing in layers)
  • Hiking boots or shoes

Once you take that first hike, you will get a feeling for what you need and what you don’t and can adjust your gear list accordingly.

Hiker stopping to rest and drink water.

4. Stay Hydrated!

The single most important thing you can do when hiking any distance is to stay hydrated . Don’t wait until you’re thirsty before you drink water because by then, you are already dehydrated.

It is recommended that you drink one-half to one quart of water and electrolytes for every hour of hiking. To mix it up a bit, consider drinking water during one break then a sports drink with electrolytes the next.

And don’t stop drinking when you leave the trail! Doctors say that the body underestimates your fluid needs so keep drinking water and electrolytes for a bit longer as you head home.

5. Plan Your Route Carefully

Don’t let your first hike be a death march. There are plenty of guidebooks, online resources, and apps that make finding that perfect first hike a cinch. Read them carefully. A good reference will tell you the approximate time it will take to hike a trail and its difficulty. If it doesn’t, avoid that trail as your first hike. Read the hike details carefully for any sign that there may be obstacles along the route that could spell trouble — climbing rocks, fording swift flowing streams, etc.

A good place to start is at your local state park where the trails are usually well blazed and there are paths for every level of experience and difficulty, plus there will be people nearby who can help you in case of an emergency.

6. Stretch Before You Hike

As we get older, our muscles lose their elasticity, our joints weaken, and we start to lose our range of motion. Hiking puts your body through some strenuous moves that can cause serious injury if you’re not prepared. After hopping out of your car at the trailhead, take some time to do some basic stretches . This will loosen up those tight muscles and joints and allow you to enjoy nature without the pain of a pulled ligament or joint injury.

7. Navigating The Trail

Even in a state park, trails can be confusing and you can easily get off the beaten path. Bring your cell phone but remember, signals can be sketchy or non-existent in the woods. Unless you’re planning a hike on a well traveled trail or with experienced hikers, consider bringing along a GPS with fresh batteries (and know how to use it) to keep track of your location.

Every hiker should learn about orienteering (using a map and compass) to navigate and bring them with you as a backup.

Senior person staying fit with walk with sticks.

8. Consider Using Trekking Poles Or Walking Sticks

Until I turned 50, I never used a trekking pole but as I grew older, my balance became a bit shaky as I forded streams, climbed down steep inclines, and going back up them —  especially with a day pack full of gear. Now I never leave home without them. You may think they are a hindrance and will be a nuisance while navigating the trail, but trust me, they provide that extra bit of security as you walk.

9. Check the Weather Well In Advance

The one thing that can literally put a damper on a hike is the weather. Trust me, walking even a mile in a cold downpouring rain without rain gear will make you doubt that hiking is the sport for you. Check that weather forecast before heading out and prepare appropriately with the proper gear. If severe weather is in the forecast, reschedule your trip. If you are caught in a thunderstorm, head to lower ground quickly.

10. Hike At Your Own Pace

Don’t be afraid or embarrassed to take frequent breaks. I’ll admit it, I used to feel that way. I’d try to keep up with a group of younger hikers only to find myself dragging farther and farther behind. Pace yourself. Every now and then, take off your pack, sit down, grab a snack and some water and enjoy nature.

11. Watch The Clock

Once you’re on the trail taking in all that nature has to offer, it’s easy to lose track of time. Keep an eye on the clock and make sure that you have plenty of time to be off the trail before sunset.

Active seniors on trip, trek mountains.

12. Don’t Hike Alone

Finally, the best advice for any first-time hiker, especially those over 50, is to never hike alone. Your best bet is to find a hiking or environmental group in your area that often leads guided hikes to fascinating areas while showing you the ins and outs of hiking.

Hiking is a popular form of exercise, but if you are over age 50, there are some things you should know before you go:

You’ve been saving toward retirement, and it’s time to reward yourself with a unique and customized senior vacation. With so many senior tours and destinations to pick from, we have a couple tips as you plan your Adventure of a lifetime!

Senior Tours

Find a tour company that caters to your needs. Are you looking to travel with other like-minded people over 50? Are you interested in learning about the culture and history of new destinations while making new friends? Do you like large or small group tours? There are plenty of ways for people to travel now from volunteerism to cruising to backpacking or couch surfing. If you don’t want to put all the pieces of your travel itinerary together on your own, an organized senior vacation is the perfect solution for you. The WAI team has already made the connections, put together the research, engaged in onsite planning, created original walking trails, booked hotels and transportation, and coordinated the best activities each region has to offer – your perfectly planned trip will go smoothly and save you the hassle of organizing your own accommodations. Just sit back, relax, and enjoy the Adventure.

Senior Travel Clubs

Ever been disappointed in those Groupon deals that charge extra for single travelers? Join a travel club, meet up with like-minded people, and arrange your own roommates. Many travel clubs can be found in your city or region by utilizing website services like meetup.com.

Overseas Vacation

Never been out of the country? Now is the time to start checking things off that bucket list. Start with small steps by making your way to neighboring countries and immersing yourself in the culture. Once you get your feet wet, you’ll be exhilarated at the opportunity to see the world and experience each unique place, from the cultural flavors and historical background to the food. There are always more areas to explore so try to stretch your funds and experience the most authentic expedition possible by going off season. Research your independent travel options with guide books from Lonely Planet or Rick Steves or book a tour from a reputational tour company to find that perfect senior trip destination.

Hiking and Adventure trips

You may be a senior citizen but it’s never too late to do that thing you’ve always wanted to do – hike the Alps, take a balloon ride, or soar on a zip line through the jungle. Less intense activities like river rafting, snorkeling, or setting back on a camel ride through desert sands are also available.

Single Traveler over 50?

Are you wishing you could travel but not wanting to go it alone? Here are a few different options to find your senior travel companion. Call up your best friend and invite them on a trip with you. Connect with a local walking club to make some new friends. Sign up for an international volunteer vacation to meet new folks and travel with a group. Or join us on a walking tour. Our groups range from 25-30 travelers and are composed of a mixture of single travelers and married couples. Avoid the fees involved when you travel solo; instead, use reputable tour companies who will find you roommates and you may meet new friends for life.

Start Your Vacation Today

Your senior vacation has never been easier. With tours available on all continents, and destinations ranging from otherworldly Antarctica, to exotic Kenya, or the comfort of England’s green countryside, our tours were meant for you! Our itineraries combine elements of adventure, hiking, rich cultural activities and lots of interaction with a fun group of travel mates. The average age of our travelers is 65 and if you are looking for vacations for seniors over 50 we have you covered! We have younger and older travelers on tour with us as well.

Perks of travelling single with Intrepid

Travellers toasting on an Intrepid tour in Morocco

Single and keen to mingle?

Our trips can be great for singles over 50 and 60 as we take care of safety, logistics and transport so you can focus your time on the joy of travel. We don’t offer the classic ‘singles-only’ tours, but we do provide the perfect base for people looking to get to know others, usually a varied mix of ages, nationalities, cultures and more. Since our tours are so diverse, this could mean you’re on a trip with couples in their 40s, singles in their 20s, family groups or people travelling on their own in their fifties and beyond. Our tours aren’t specifically designed for making perfect matches, but hey, if it happens, it happens .

Small numbers, big sites

The best part of travelling in a small group is the friends you can make in the most unlikely of places – we’re talking while hiking the Inca Trail or cooking dhal in  Sri Lanka . It also means a bunch of new faces to share the world’s most epic experiences with and a few people around to watch your back (especially when walking through a traffic crossing in Vietnam ). No matter who you’re sharing your tour with, you’ll be docking at unbelievable sites, meeting local people and getting a one-of-a-kind journey - single or not, we think that's pretty epic.

Safety and logistics

Travelling solo at any age can feel like a big deal, especially when venturing to far-off places. That’s why small group tours are the perfect fit, no matter if you’re travelling alone at 25 or 65. We’ll do the planning, manage the itinerary, handle the transport and keep safety in mind - all so you can immerse yourself to the max. Not to mention, your guide will be able to support you with potential language barriers, give recommendations, show you the best spots for photos and so much more. Don’t just take our word for it, find out for yourself.

Local knowledge and unique perspectives

Maybe you’ve already seen the big sites and now looking for a different experience or new perspective. That’s where we come in. Our tours are led by our Local Leaders, all of whom are experts in their corner of the world and are out there showing it to others right now. Their knowledge of their country’s attractions, delicacies, cultures and communities is something you probably won’t get to experience elsewhere. Find yourself ducking into unknown hotspots and learning more than just the basics when you’re on one of our tours.

Do i need a covid-19 vaccine to join an intrepid trip as a senior.

Trips from 1 January 2023 onwards

From 1 January 2023, Intrepid will no longer require travellers to provide proof of vaccination against COVID-19 (excluding all Polar trips and select adventure cruises). However, we continue to strongly recommend that all Intrepid travellers and leaders get vaccinated to protect themselves and others.

Specific proof of testing or vaccination may still be required by your destination or airline. Please ensure you check travel and entry requirements carefully.

Who are Intrepid travellers?

Intrepid adventures are for travellers with a yearning to get off the beaten track. Whether you're travelling solo, with a group of friends, or are aged 18 or 70, there is an Intrepid adventure to suit your interests and comfort level. Each Intrepid adventure has a physical and cultural grading to help you decide if the trip is right for you. No special skills are required for most adventures, just a sense of adventure and a curiosity about the world. Even on our camping adventures no previous experience is required; our tents are easy to set up, even for first-time campers.

Are there age restrictions on your trips?

For the majority of our trips the minimum age is 15. An adult must accompany all children under the age of 18. Our Overland Adventures have a minimum age of 18. Younger children can join us on our Family trips and Short Break Adventures, but check each trip for its minimum age, which is located on the trip’s overview page on the website. Most of our trips don’t have a maximum age limit, but a Self-Assessment Form is required for all passengers 70 years and over.

How many people will be on my trip?

Good things come in small packages, which is why we keep our group sizes down. This means we’re small enough to remain flexible as we thread our way through communities without intimidating the locals. On most of our trips you’ll be part of an intimate group of 12-16 people, though our group sizes are on average 10 people. Our Overland trips are in purpose-built vehicles that can carry up to 24 travellers. Group sizes are displayed on each trip’s overview page on our website.

I’m travelling alone – is that OK?

This is the beauty of the Intrepid style of travel: many of our travellers join because they are travelling solo and want to meet and share experiences with like-minded people.

I have a disability – can I join an Intrepid trip?

Intrepid is committed to making travel widely accessible, regardless of ability or disability. We ask that you carefully consider whether you are physically and mentally able to complete the itinerary you have chosen, recognising that on many trips you will be required to carry your own bags and use public transport.

Where we can we will make reasonable adjustments to the operation of our trips to facilitate the requirements of disabled travellers – such as booking ground floor accommodation, or having our leaders communicate important directions in writing as well as verbally. Many travellers with disabilities have been able to enjoy our trips by travelling with a friend or companion who can assist with specific needs. If joining a group trip is not practical we may be able to provide you with a private departure. Please contact our sales team for further information on any of our itineraries.

Learn more about accessible travel with Intrepid

Do I need to buy travel insurance?

Travel insurance is compulsory on all our trips if you’re travelling internationally. Minimum coverage may differ from trip to trip, so make sure you check the Travel Insurance section in your Essential Trip Information. You will not be permitted to join the group until your leader has sighted your insurance policy number and the insurance company's 24-hour emergency contact number – it’s really important there are no barriers to getting emergency assistance for you.

Will I have my own room?

It's your call. Rooming on our trips is organised on a twin-share basis, but most of our trips also have the option to pay an extra fee for your own room. Just let us know at the time of booking and we'll arrange it for you.

For twin-share rooms, we pair up solo travellers with another traveller of the same gender as per the gender marker on each of their passports. As a responsible tour operator, we strive to create a safe and inclusive environment for everyone. In the case that your gender identity differs from what's indicated on your passport, please contact us so that we can discuss rooming options with you.

On a small selection of itineraries some accommodations are booked on an open-gender, multi-share basis. In those instances it will clearly be stated in your Essential Trip Information.

How does group time work?

Whether you’re travelling alone or with a partner, our trips have a set itinerary. But within that there’s time set aside for your own exploration (if you want to – no pressure). Depending on how you're feeling, you may want to have some downtime, ask your guide for a few tips then head out alone, or hang out with the group and see where the day takes you.

What makes a small group tour better than a coach tour?

The main difference between a small group tour and a coach tour is the size of the group; our tours have 10 travellers each (on average) while coaches can hold up to 60 people. This means that you'll never have to vie for your leader's attention on a small group tour because you'll automatically have it.

FEATURED TRIPS

Hiking in the british isles.

k-mitch-hodge-OHIp0nv8HvM-unsplash_edite

This incredible 14 day journey has been designed to offer the history, heritage, landscapes and cultures of the British Isles. By spending a few days in four different countries, we will understand the distinct characteristics of each nation, while enjoying the outdoor-themed highlights along the way.   In Ireland, we have the opportunity to explore Dublin by foot visiting the Book of Kells, enjoying a pint of Guinness, as well as experiencing the impressive beauty of Powerscourt House & Glendalough. A ferry takes us to Wales where we will enjoy more fantastic hikes, medieval castles and learn about Welsh history and their language. In the English Lake District, enjoy a traditional cream tea, a local market, and a creamery where we watch their famous cheese being made. A steamship takes us to the starting point of one of our scenic hikes. The Scottish Highlands offers wildlife, tasty treats and a hike to the summit of Ben Vrackie, where the 360 degree views over Pitlochry and the countryside are simply stunning. We end our trip in Edinburgh with a walking tour and a bit of storytelling.   Click here  for more information!

The Caucasus'

Monasterio_Khor_Virap,_Armenia,_2016-10-01,_DD_24.jpeg

Situated between Russia in the north and Iran and Turkey in the southwest, lies the region best known as the Caucasus. Azerbaijan, Georgia and Armenia were all former Soviet Republics, each with their own rich and unique history, language and culture.

The Caucasus is famous for its hospitality, sumptuous foods, fine wines and stunning mountain scenery. Join us on this fascinating journey into a lesser-known region of the world.   Click here  for more information!

Horizontal landscape image of Iceland showing a waterfall, lush fjords, and puffin birds

Explore the rugged beauty of this North Atlantic island nation. For most people, the name Iceland conjures up little more than snow and ice. But it is much more than ice - in its sagas, puffins, glaciers, fjords, active volcanoes, lava fields and hot springs, you'll find the perfect blend of nature, culture and history.

We begin in the capital city of Reykjavik and continue south along the scenic coast, taking in lava fields, hot springs and bird cliffs enroute. See the remarkable Geysir, the geyser from which all geysers derive their name, and Hveravellir Hot Springs - an oasis of warmth amidst two interior glaciers. Experience the hospitality of Icelanders in the quaint coastal towns of Akureyri and Höfn, and enjoy an exciting whale watching trip from Husavik.   Click here  for more information!

Malta & Sicily

The largest island in the Mediterranean, Sicily’s incredible natural wonders, mild climate and rich culture offers an unparalleled feast for the senses. The island beckons travelers with lush mountains, simmering volcanoes, picture perfect seaside villages, and crystal colored waters. Settled by diverse ancient civilizations for over 3,000 years, this history is reflected in its architecture, cuisine, and treasured archaeological sites.  Malta is truly one of Southern Europe’s travel gems, boasting an impressive 7,000 years of history. Located in the heart of the Mediterranean, the islands have three UNESCO World Heritage Sites, including the Baroque city of Valletta, Hal Saflieni Hypogeum, and several prehistoric Megalithic Temples.  Experience the untouched and rugged life on the islands of Malta, where time seems to stand still. The history, architecture, landscape, and people connect past and present, making Malta a rich cultural and historic destination for all who step foot on this magical Mediterranean nation.  Click here  for more information!

Kenya & Tanzania

Horizontal Landscape image of the Serengeti desert with hot air balloons in background, w

The great parks of East Africa - the Serengeti, Maasai Mara, Tarangire and the Ngorongoro Crater offer a unique and overwhelming wildlife safari experience that is simply unequaled. The Maasai Mara and Serengeti are arguably the most famous game parks in the world and home to the greatest wildlife migration on earth. Millions of wildebeest, zebras, and gazelles cross crocodile-infested rivers and are hunted by lions, leopards, and cheetahs in a spectacle of survival to reach greener pastures. Our views of Ngorongoro Crater are unforgettable. The crater is home to over 20,000 large animals including some of Tanzania's last remaining black rhinos. Tarangire's open savannah with its primeval baobab trees is filled with roaming herds of elephants and an impressive array of predators.  Enjoy tribal encounters with the Maasai and the nomadic Bushman, which are truly unforgettable experiences. Our safari concludes in historic Stone Town, Zanzibar.  Click here  for more information!

  • Best Sustainable: G Adventures
  • Best for True Solo Travel: Black Tomato
  • Best for Ages 25-39: For The Love of Travel

Best Experience : Exodus Travels

Courtesy of Exodus Travels

Traveling solo on an Exodus Travels group trip means access to self-guided and guided excursions around the world for every type of traveler. Choose a walking wine holiday in Portugal or explore Egypt via cruise boat and sleeper train, for example. Additionally, its Exodus Edits collection offers shorter itineraries of up to five days and is geared towards travelers in their 30s and 40s—though they’re ideal for anyone looking for more vigorous activity such as ziplining and surfing in Costa Rica or sampling street eats and beach hopping in Sicily.

There is no single supplement fee when you room with a fellow traveler, and chances are you may end up with your own room anyway. Booking a travel itinerary with UK-based Exodus Travels includes a full refund should the company need to cancel your trip and a complimentary trip transfer to another tour or different person up to 21 days before the scheduled trip. Plus, travelers who book their third or more trips with Exodus receive a 5 percent discount on their next booking.

What’s more, the company works to curate trips that align with a number of United Nations sustainable development goals including goals for responsible consumption and production, empowering local communities, and climate action considerations. Exodus Travels (founded in 1974) was awarded Best Operator in National Geographic Traveller’s sixth annual Reader Awards in 2021.

Best for Ages 35-50 : El Camino Travel

Courtesy of Encounter Travel

According to El Camino Travel ’s founder, Katalina Mayorga, elder millennials are their strongest customer base. That means if you were born between 1980 and 1985 approximately, you’ll find yourself among curious, like-minded solo travelers looking to immerse themselves in destinations like Trinidad and Tobago, Colombia, and the Eastern European nation of Georgia. Some trips even add a professional photographer to capture shareable shots so you can remain in the moment.

All of El Camino’s guided, small group trips max out at 12 participants. They’re also curated with an ethos of preserving and protecting local culture, the environment, and communities. For example, some of their partners include the Environmental Research Institute Charlotteville in Tobago and La Sierra Artist Residency in Santa Marta, Colombia.

Best Sustainable : G Adventures

Courtesy of Intrepid Travel

G Adventures is particularly known for its sustainable, responsible ethos. The company works with small, locally-owned hotels and operators to ensure your travel dollars benefit the community you’re visiting; outlines policies around child and animal welfare practices; aims to reduce single-use plastics, and works to ensure experiences taking place in Indigenous communities align with community goals.

Founded in 1990, G Adventures specializes in small group adventure tours to a host of destinations from Asia to South America and Africa to the Arctic. Nearly half of the travelers on every trip are flying solo, and there’s no single supplement if you choose to bunk with a same-sex roommate. Or, select your own room for a fee.

A Chief Experience Officer leads each group tour and itineraries are searchable by travel style. For example, find wellness-centric trips like nine days of daily yoga, visits to Hindu temples, and partake in traditional healing ceremonies in Bali. Or travel with their partner, National Geographic, for an exclusive guided tour of South Africa’s Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden and a visit to Soweto township in Johannesburg, the home of Nelson Mandela.

G Adventures partnered with hostel booking service Hostelworld in 2021 to launch its Roamies itineraries. Its combination of backpacking and organized travel itineraries includes countries like Albania, Mexico, the Netherlands, and Vietnam. The trips are marketed to 18- to 35-year-olds, though like-minded individuals keen on budget travel and communal environments may enjoy these trips, too.

Best for True Solo Travel : Black Tomato

Courtesy of G Adventures

Black Tomato specializes in bespoke luxury travel experiences. For those interested in traversing around the world solo and willing to pay a premium for tailored itineraries, its adventurous or culturally immersive experiences may just be your ticket.

Your travels might look like hiking and biking in Patagonia, embarking on a spiritual pilgrimage through Bhutan and India, chasing glaciers and geysers in Iceland, or learning to cook Georgia and Armenia’s local dishes or Japan’s regional cuisine.

In 2017, Black Tomato launched its Get Lost adventure travel experience. With the support of a dedicated team, and without prior knowledge of where they're headed, Get Lost participants will find their way home from an undisclosed location. The location is selected based on a pre-travel questionnaire about which environment clients would like to immerse themselves in. Then, they show up at the airport and the adventure begins.

Best for Ages 25-39 : For The Love of Travel

Courtesy of Contiki

With 80 percent of individuals traveling with For The Love of Travel jet -setting solo, each trip is packed with opportunities to meet fellow Millennial and Gen Z travel enthusiasts. For example, within your small “crew” of up to 14 people, make new friends doing snow sports and unwinding in saunas in Lapland or devouring tacos and sipping mezcal in Mexico City. Trips range from four to nine days, including weekends in Colorado’s Rocky Mountain wilderness or an extended weekend in Costa Rica where you’ll hike through rainforests, relax in hammocks, and hike, bike, or surf.

According to company feedback, the average FTLOT traveler is 30 years old and interested in meeting new people while traveling . The company bills itself as a mid-range travel company, where “we might stay in a more basic hotel for a couple of nights so we can include a Michelin-worthy meal and a private catamaran ride.”

In 2022, FTLOT plans to offer at least 10 new itineraries including to Belize, Turkey, and Spain’s Basque Country. And for those with the flexibility, the company launched Sojrn in 2021 featuring month-long, themed stays in destinations like Cape Town—focused on biodiversity—and a fashion-oriented stay in Paris.

FTLOT requires an initial deposit and allows installment payments if not paid in full.

Best for 50+ : Overseas Adventure Travel Rates

Courtesy Flash Pack

Overseas Adventure Travel is primarily aimed at American travelers aged 50 and over. It offers guided itineraries to worldwide destinations, including Africa, Antarctica, Asia, and the South Pacific, with trips ranked by activity level and accompanied by a list of physical requirements to help select an itinerary that is best suited for you. For example, their Japan and South Korea itinerary advise that participants be able to carry their own luggage as the selected hotels do not have porter service.

Some of Overseas Adventure Travel’s most popular trips include 17 days of wending the Adriatic from Croatia to Bosnia and Herzegovina (think a walking tour in Dubrovnik, sampling traditional Bosnian food in Sarajevo, and exploring the countryside near Zagreb). On another popular trip, you spend 15 days traveling through Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia, ending in Helsinki, Finland. All trips offer pre-and post-itinerary extensions, and either waive the single supplement entirely or offer a discount on a private room.

The company offers a free Roommate Matching Program which helps you find a like-minded, same-sex roommate. If they can’t find a match, your single supplement is deducted. Small group sizes typically average 13 travelers.

Overseas Adventure Travel won the Solo Travel Award for Best Tour in 2017 and 2018, thanks in large part to its policy of offering a limited number of single spaces for each itinerary.

Best Female : Wild Women Expeditions

Courtesy of Overseas Adventure Travel

It began as an all-women, Canada-based canoe tripping company in 1991, and Wild Women Expeditions is perfect for boundary-pushing women who want to travel independently and enjoy the safety and support of an organized tour. The company also prioritizes hiring female tour leaders and on-the-ground guides. It offers outdoor adventures for women of all ages and identities and with a range of physical abilities (“whether your greatest skill is tracking a storm or talking up a storm, summiting mountains or summoning courage, keeping your kayak in line or coloring outside the lines,” as the company describes).

The company travels to 31 destinations around the world like Egypt, Tanzania, and the Azores islands. Itineraries are typically adventure-based and are filtered on their website by activity, with options ranging from sailing to cycling and horse riding. Imagine yourself sea kayaking and snorkeling in the Galapagos or scaling glaciers in Alaska.

Most guests are solo travelers and there’s no single supplement to worry about as accommodation is typically in a shared room or cabin. Though if privacy is a priority, you can usually snag your own room for a nominal extra fee. Group sizes are kept small and social with between six and 14 women, depending on the itinerary you choose. The average group size is eight.

Wild Women Expeditions also takes care to curate trips that avoid or minimize the disturbance of wildlife; supports environmental education and advocacy projects; and partners with social justice and women’s rights organizations.

Want to take a look at some other options? See our guide to the best women-only adventure travel companies .

Best for Solo Parent Travel : Intrepid Travel

Intrepid ’s family-themed holidays welcome adults traveling with children, including solo parents looking to travel with their kids without the stress of planning and coordinating a trip. Since each family’s travel needs and preferences are different, every itinerary includes an “essential trip information” section where Intrepid outlines whether the trip would be a good fit for you and your kids, as well as a physical rating from least to more strenuous activities.

For example, an itinerary through part of the Amazon Jungle in Peru advises the jungle can be very hot and humid, and that the weather can be unpredictable in the Andes. On the other hand, an 11-day trip to Borneo island in Southeast Asia lists a minimum age of 5 and outlines a range of accommodations from hotels to guesthouses and jungle camps; on a few occasions, travel times between destinations range between four to five hours. Trips to Costa Rica, Tanzania, China, and Morocco are also listed.

Individuals under 17 years typically receive a 10 percent discount, and the company requires that adults have at least one child under 18 years traveling with them. As part of Intrepid’s commitment to responsible travel, itineraries support initiatives surrounding sustainability and conservation, climate education, and preservation of Indigenous culture.

Choose destinations catering to solo travelers

Some destinations are more solo-friendly than others. Look for places that offer a good mix of attractions, activities, and social opportunities for solo travelers. Popular choices often include cities known for their culture, history, and vibrant social scenes.

Plan itinerary wisely

Choose activities that align with your hobbies or things you’ve always wanted to try. This will make your trip more enjoyable and allow you to meet like-minded individuals along the way.

Research accommodation options

Look for accommodations that cater to solo travelers. Hostels, guesthouses, and boutique hotels are often more social and provide opportunities to meet fellow travelers. Additionally, consider using platforms like Airbnb, which can offer more personalized and local experiences.

MORE TRAVEL TIPS

Join group tours

Group tours and activities are excellent opportunities to meet new people and share experiences. Look for tours specifically designed for solo travelers or small group tours that encourage interaction among participants. This can also alleviate some of the planning and logistics burdens.

Stay connected

Inform your family and friends about your travel plans and share your itinerary with them. Stay in touch regularly to keep them updated about your whereabouts.

Embrace technology

Utilize travel apps and websites to enhance your travel experience. Use apps for navigation, translation, and discovering local attractions and events.

Take necessary precautions to ensure your safety while traveling alone. Research the safety of your chosen destinations beforehand, follow local customs and laws, and trust your instincts. Avoid walking alone at night in unfamiliar or poorly lit areas and be cautious with your belongings.

Take care of your health

Prioritize your health during your trip. Visit a doctor before your departure to ensure you’re in good health for travel. Carry necessary medications, have travel insurance, and stay hydrated. Take breaks and listen to your body when it needs rest.

Enjoy your independence

Remember that traveling solo gives you the freedom to do what you want when you want. Embrace this independence, be open to new experiences, and enjoy the journey.

Remember, the key to a successful trip is to plan, stay open-minded, and embrace the adventure. Happy travels!
