What is a honeymoon exactly?

Well, the concept of a honeymoon dates back hundreds of years ago, but the tradition still remains the same worldwide.

A couple just tied the knot, bid farewell to family and friends, got into their car/carriage with the “ just married” sign on the bumper and cans dragging along; they are riding/driving off into the sunset!

Where are they going?

The Merriam-Webster Dictionary describes a honeymoon as a period of harmony immediately following marriage. So, why honeymoon, and not another word?

Keep reading to know more about it!

Why is it called a Honeymoon?

It is the period a couple spends time together alone, away from family and friends . For some, it could be immediately after the wedding ceremony ; for others, it may be a few days or weeks after their wedding ceremony.

The first month of marriage is usually one of the sweetest months for most couples. It is a honeymoon because , during this period, spouses have fun and enjoy their company tremendously!

So, what is the origin of honeymoon? Honeymoon originates from old English and is a combination of two words, “Honey” and “Moone.” Honey represents sweetness like the food, and Moone refers to the period of one month. Couples used to celebrate the first month of marriage drinking Mead (a sweet drink) gifted to them.

In the earlier centuries, the moon cycle determined a month! Honeymoon historically refers to the first month of marriage, which is expected to be the sweetest.

Each partner is excited to start their new life with their significant other. Typically, honeymoon couples find it hard to be apart from each other for long during this period.

At this stage, you find yourself smiling at their texts, eager to see them again even if they just left, extremely happy around them, etc. Everything seems easy and perfect as if, nothing could ever go wrong.

Why is a honeymoon so special?

The answer to what a honeymoon is depends on you and the effort you’re willing to put in to ensure it’s a time of happiness.

The honeymoon stage is the beginning of a relationship where there are no problems. It is the first stage in romantic relationships and marriages.

It is that period when couples are ecstatic in their relationship. Research shows that, during the honeymoon stage, love hormones spike up.

These hormones are dopamine . They are produced when you fall in love , when you kiss, hug, cuddle, or engage in any form of physical touch. It spawns the Norepinephrine causing the fabled butterflies in the tummy.

As time goes by with your new partner, physical affection reduces, and this causes the love hormones to slow down in production.

What happens in honeymoon?

Couples rarely ask what is the purpose of a honeymoon as they look forward to spending time with their spouse in isolation.

It is common practice for couples to travel together after their wedding ceremony to a place away from family, friends, and all responsibilities.

When it comes to things to do on a honeymoon or honeymoon activities, some spouses leave immediately after their wedding ceremony; others may decide to stay back to handle a few things before leaving for their honeymoon holiday.

To understand what is honeymoon holiday, you should know that this tradition dates as far back as the fifth century. It started as a way for couples to get to know each other intimately before settling into their life as married couple.

Back then, it was common practice for families to arrange marriages . The honeymoon period was for the married couples to get to know each other away from any distractions.

In modern times, there have been upgrades to the tradition. Even though it is not the first time they are meeting, spouses spend time together at exotic locations for the first time as a married couple.

It does not matter if a couple has been cohabiting before getting married. Each couple is unique, and there is no set rule on what to do during your honeymoon holiday. So, what happens on honeymoon, and what activities can a newlywed couple partake in to make it memorable?

Here are a few suggestions;

  • Capture the memories

So, what is a honeymoon?

It’s all about creating memories!

This is your first outing as a married couple. You are most likely having the best time in a beautiful location.

You can ask a random stranger to take pictures of you and your spouse; the hotel staff is often willing to help. It is a great idea to capture your moments and make them into memories.

  • Indulge your cravings

Before you go back to your responsibilities, your honeymoon period is a great time to cheat on your diet. Indulge in mouth-watering, finger-licking food, and try new things together!

Have as much happy food as you like. If you are in a new city or country, you should try their local food. Food exploration is a way to bond with your spouse.

  • Spend quality time together

What is a honeymoon if not spending quality time together?

This is one of the essential things to do on a honeymoon. Be deliberate about spending time with your spouse.

Take a walk together at night, have a picnic at the park, watch the sunset/sunrise, stargaze together, ride a bike, etc. Do a lot of fun activities together as a couple .

  • Have amazing sex

What is a honeymoon if you don’t indulge in intimate relationships with your partner?

Contrary to the romanticized idea of what happens on honeymoon night, having sex is not the only thing couples do. Scratch that; of course, it is!

This is a time to explore your physical attraction with your partner and learn about their bodies. Your love hormones are spiking at this moment so, why not take advantage of it?

What is the purpose of a honeymoon?

Traditionally, most couples go on a honeymoon but remember. There is no set rule on how to go about your marriage, so do not feel pressured to go.

Going on a honeymoon holiday is a nice thing to do with your partner; here are some reasons why;

  • Time to unwind
  • To set the tone for the rest of your marriage
  • Time to explore
  • Get to know each other better

Wedding planning is an exhausting process, no doubt!

After going through all that stress to make sure your big day is perfect, a honeymoon is due. It helps you and your spouse to relax and unwind.

You get to indulge in delicious cuisine after following a rigid diet to fit into your wedding clothes!

As a newly wedded couple, enjoy the feeling and the moment before getting back to the craze of working and dealing with responsibilities.

  • It sets the tone for your marriage

Your honeymoon experience sets the tone for your marriage. A honeymoon is a fun way to start your journey together as a married couple. You could create a yearly tradition out of it to spice things up!

Spending the rest of your life with someone else is a big commitment. You do not want to dive in headfirst and then get flustered down the road. Going on a honeymoon helps you to ease your way into your new life.

On your honeymoon, you discover quirks about your spouse you may not have noticed before. Being in a new stress-free environment takes the edge off.

  • It allows you to explore things as a couple

Going on a honeymoon as a couple is an adventure. Your honeymoon experience involves getting to try new things, playing fun games, and visiting new places together .

Learning new things as a couple is a way to create memories that will keep you going once the honeymoon phase is over.

You will not always feel butterflies with your partner, but the memories you have made will last forever.

  • It is an opportunity to celebrate

Well, what is a honeymoon, if it doesn’t involve celebrations? You just took a big step; why not celebrate with your partner?

Your wedding party was a celebration with your family and friends; now it is time to share that special moment with your spouse. Who could understand your joy asides from the person you have chosen to live with forever?

It is okay to take a moment for yourself as a married couple. Clink your glasses because forever has just begun!

  • You get to know each other better

For some couples, the answer to what honeymoon is is a time to get to know the living habits of their partners.

Although there are couples who cohabit before marriage, there are others who have never lived together.

Instead of plunging headfast into living together as a couple, a honeymoon helps to ease the shock of character differences. You find out during your honeymoon whether your partner sleeps with the lights on or off, for instance.

Knowing your peculiar habits helps to plan your married life together. You decide whether to get individual night lamps or a single one, to have two sinks in the bathroom or one.

How long does the Honeymoon stage last?

When does the honeymoon phase end?

For some couples, the honeymoon stage in marriage does not last forever. If you’re curious about how long the honeymoon period lasts, then know it depends on the couple.

It can last for as long as six months to two years. Research suggests that it lasts no longer than two and a half years for the average couple.

How long should a honeymoon last depends on the couple and the amount of time they can afford to take away from their responsibility. However, the honeymoon length typically lasts no longer than a month; after all, there are responsibilities to get back to, and you have to save costs.

Many couples spend a week or two on their honeymoon holiday and then get back to their daily schedule. It is possible to keep the honeymoon stage going for the rest of your romantic relationship, but you have to be intentional about that.

Why does the Honeymoon stage end?

The beauty of the honeymoon stage is that each partner is getting to know the other. The mystery is a thrilling experience. Once you have unraveled the mystery that is your partner, your relationship starts to get a little less exciting.

Another thing that causes the honeymoon stage of a relationship to end is the reduction in showing physical affection.

Earlier, you learned that hormones increase in production when you engage in physical touches like hugging, kissing, and having sex. It’s a typical practice for partners to get too comfortable and forget about showing physical affection.

Getting bored in your romantic life does not mean that it is the end. As the honeymoon magic fades away, you enter the stage of deliberate commitment. Scientifically, this stage is the limerence stage .

3 ways of sustaining the honeymoon phase

You recreate the magic by working at it. Once you have decided to commit to your partner, you open yourself to a more mature and stable form of loving them.

Some things you can do to keep the excitement going are:

1. Spend quality time together

Do not get overwhelmed with life and its responsibilities ! Take out time from your busy schedule to appreciate your partner and be with them intimately.

Choose a day of the week to do something together, like, watching a movie at home or the cinema, cooking together, or going out on a date. Create fun traditions!

Keep doing the things that made your partner happy at the beginning of your relationship/marriage.

2. Try out new things

One sure way to keep things exciting in every relationship is to try new things together, such as signing up for a dance class, pottery, painting, or going on a holiday.

Failing and Winning together is a great way to bond as a couple.

3. Relive memorable moments from the honeymoon period

You can revisit old places together and reenact scenarios that made you and your spouse happy. You can watch videos and look through photo albums.

More questions on the concept of what a honeymoon is

The end of the honeymoon phase is not the end of love. So, when gathering answers on what is honeymoon?  Know more here:

Who pays for the honeymoon?

The responsibility for paying for the honeymoon traditionally falls on the newlywed couple. It is customary for the couple to budget and plan for this expense as part of their overall wedding preparations.

However, in modern times, there are variations in who pays for the honeymoon. Some couples choose to have their honeymoon funded by their wedding guests through a honeymoon registry, where guests can contribute towards specific activities or experiences.

In other cases, family members or close friends may offer to cover the cost of the honeymoon as a generous gift. Ultimately, the decision on who pays for the honeymoon depends on the couple’s financial situation and individual circumstances.

What are the rules of a honeymoon?

There are no fixed rules for a honeymoon, as it varies depending on the couple’s preferences and cultural backgrounds. However, some common expectations include enjoying quality time together, celebrating their marriage, and creating special memories.

Honeymoons typically involve relaxation, romance, and intimacy. Couples often choose romantic destinations, stay in luxurious accommodations, and engage in activities they both enjoy. The duration of the honeymoon can range from a few days to a few weeks.

Ultimately, the rules of a honeymoon are defined by the couple’s desires and the experience they want to have together.

The honeymoon phase is one of the best times in a couple’s romantic journey. Try not to skip it as a married couple. Enjoy every moment together, and be intentional about making memories. Marriage therapy can also be beneficial during this time to establish a strong foundation for the future.

There’s no exact place you must go or activity you must do. These are all suggestions to have a fun time.

Remember to set aside work for the duration you’d be spending with your new spouse. Take the time to understand each other and learn new things about each other.

For instance, going to a carnival together would help you know each other’s interests based on the games you play.

If you think, “Why is it called a honeymoon?” Remember, it is the beginning of a new life with your spouse. It’s a natural phase of romantic relationships.

As a married couple, enjoy your honeymoon period so you’d have something to hold on to later in a marriage, so make the most of the moment!

The first recorded usage of the word “honeymoon” can be traced back to the 16th century. In various early texts and poems, the term is used to refer to the initial month or cycle of marriage. One such example is found in Samuel Johnson’s dictionary, where he defines honeymoon as “a month after marriage when there is nothing but tenderness and pleasure.” These references suggest that the term originated as a metaphorical expression for the early stages of matrimony.

The mysterious origin of the word 'honeymoon'

The INSIDER Summary:

  • The first usage of the word "honeymoon" is from 1546.
  • It's totally unconnected to today's meaning — a vacation after your wedding.
  • It first took on its current meaning in a 1592 literary hoax document.
  • It took another 200 years for it to catch on.

After getting married, couples tend to take a vacation . Honeymoons are a way for couples to focus on spending time with each other , leaving the rest of the world behind .

But why on Earth is it called a  "honeymoon" ? What exactly does it have to do with honey and moons? And when did this whole tradition start, anyway?

The best place to look is the Oxford English Dictionary , which tracks how words have been used over the centuries. The history of the word "honeymoon," it turns out, is at the end of an etymological rabbit hole.

At first, it didn't even necessarily refer to a vacation.

The origin of the word is shrouded in a mysterious literary hoax.

The first use of the phrase wasn't exactly connected to the word's current usage. It appears in a volume titled (get ready for this): "A dialogue conteinyng the nomber in effect of all the prouerbes in the englishe tongue compacte in a matter concernyng two maner of mariages, made and set foorth," published in 1546 and written by the playwright and poet John Heywood, according to the Oxford English Dictionary.

It's in a poem where the speaker talks about love and art , where Heywood uses the phrase "it was yet but hony moone" to signal a feeling of merryment.

The next usage of "honeymoon," in 1592, is more precisely attuned to how we use the word "honeymoon" today. But it appeared in a very strange document that may have been a literary hoax.

Robert Greene, another British dramatist, is most famous for the publication attributed to him right after he died, in 1592. Ostensibly, his last work was "Greenes, Groats-worth of Witte, bought with a million of Repentance," a semiautobiographical tract about the importance of living a moral life. It was a sensation in the London world of letters at the time , partly for including a thinly veiled attack on the works of William Shakespeare. (That you've heard of Shakespeare but probably haven't heard of Greene is enough to settle the dispute.)

Related stories

But there's a cloud of uncertainty around the book. It's not clear if Greene wrote the whole thing himself, or if it's partly the work of his fellow writer Henry Chettle. To make matters even more confusing, a slew of  other semiautobiograohical tracts of Robert Greene's life and death appeared, all claiming to be written by Greene himself.

One of these works, according to the Oxford English Dictionary, is the source of the contemporary use of "honeymoon." It's in a version of Greene's death story titled "Greene's Vision: Written at the instant of his death. Conteyning a penitent passion for the folly of his Pen."

In the narrative, the word appears after two people get married. "To be bréefe, they were marryed: well that daye was past with dauncing and Honney moone it was for a moneth after." In other words, two people got married and then spent time with each other for a month.

The usage explains what the word actually means. "Honey," because it's a sweet period of time. And "moon" because it takes a month for the moon to wane and wax anew. It also alludes to love waning steadily, as the moon does, according to the Oxford English Dictionary.

The subsequent uses of the word "honeymoon" all basically translate to "a happy period of time following a marriage."

By the end of the 1500s, the word also referred to a similar experience in a political context, meaning a short-lived period of goodwill that exists before a relationship turns bad. Take, for example, a series of lectures about British statesmen by Goldwin Smith from 1867 , where he refers to "the brief honeymoon of the new king and his parliament," a moment before Parlimentarian John Pym hadn't yet decided that Charles I should be arrested.

It wasn't for another 200 years that the honeymoon became a vacation.

The word started referring to a deliberate  vacation only in 1791.

That usage first appears in a collection of German folk stories by Johann Karl August Musäus, translated by Thomas Beddoes, according to the Oxford English dictionary.

"The new-married couple spent their honey-moon in Augspurg, in mutual happiness and innocent enjoyments, like the first human pair in the garden of Eden," the sentence goes.

The first native-English usage appeared in 1804, according to the dictionary, in another story collection, this one published in London and written by Maria Edgeworth.

"Mr. and Mrs. Ludgate went down in the hoy to Margate, to spend their honey-moon in style," she writes.

From then on, the usage of the word meant what it means today. By 1821, it acquired a verb form — "honeymooning" — and the noun even managed to grab a few other words that were commonly used alongside it, forming common phrases like "honeymoon couple," "honeymoon period," and "honeymoon suite."

"Honeymoon," like many words in the English language, has a surprising heritage. This one took 200 years to mean exactly what it does today.

When and How to Plan Your Honeymoon

Gear up for the trip of a lifetime.

honeymoon trip meaning

If you’ve been together long enough to get married, chances are your honeymoon won’t be your first trip as a couple. But if the stakes somehow seem higher than with your previous vacations, you’re not imagining things.

"The biggest difference is that you’re simultaneously planning a wedding, which can be an incredibly stressful time," says travel advisor Alexandra Stockton. "It’s also usually the most expensive trip a couple plans together, so there’s a lot of pressure to get it right."

Meet the Expert

Alexandra Stockton  is a luxury travel and honeymoon consultant. She is based in Knoxville, Tennessee.

The key to making sure your first getaway as a married couple is one you always remember fondly is simply said, but requires forethought: You must plan in advance.  Well  in advance. But, by hitting a few key milestones and heeding Stockton’s ace advice on determining the best time and place for you to embark, the journey will be infinitely more joyful than it is stress-inducing. Read on for everything to know about when and how to plan a honeymoon.

When to Start Planning Your Honeymoon

For many couples, the honeymoon is a well-deserved reward at the end of the marathon that is wedding planning . So while it can seem a little outrageous to start planning your trip around the same time you start planning your nuptials, that’s exactly what you’ll want to do—especially if you’re not sure where you want to go. Start planning your honeymoon eight to 12 months in advance in order to allow ample time for settling on a destination, booking travel and accommodations, and, if you’ll be using a travel agent (more on that later), ensuring you can get on their schedule.

Deciding Where to Go

If the whole world is up for grabs, opt for a destination neither of you have been to that offers activities you both enjoy. If your goal is to truly kick back, Stockton’s favorite beach destinations are  Cayo Espanto  in Belize,  Guana Island  in the British Virgin Islands, and  Como Parrot Cay  in Turks and Caicos. (For a mix of relaxation and nightlife, she often recommends St. Barts.) Adrenaline junkies should look into Costa Rica, Patagonia,  New Zealand , or even a small-ship adventure cruise to Antarctica. Those who don’t mind being constantly on the go might consider touring Japan or safari-hopping in Africa with a final stop in Rwanda, where you’ll trek through mountains to see gorillas in the wild.

Wherever you roam, you’ll want to make sure your dates work for your destination. Many coastal European hotels and restaurants are closed during the off-season, so traveling there in February or March wouldn’t make sense. Australia and other destinations in the Southern Hemisphere have opposite seasons from the U.S., so to get their summer you need to travel during North America’s winter. It’s also important to avoid monsoon seasons in tropical locales such as Costa Rica and to be aware of other important annual events that may impact your trip. (During the February-April burning season in areas surrounding Thailand’s Chiang Mai, for example, air quality is often less than stellar.)

Thinking about a  multi-destination honeymoon ? Stockton recommends sticking around for at least three nights in each location and ordering your stops in a way that will maximize enjoyment. "If you’re leaving right after the wedding, I recommend a relaxing start, but if you’re traveling long after it might make more sense to jump straight into the action," she adds. "Regardless of how your trip begins, end somewhere you can relax and recharge before heading home."

Finally, it’s always helpful to know when peak season hits for your desired destination. Peak season often means the best weather, but you’ll also be dealing with larger crowds and higher prices. Here are peak seasons for a few popular honeymoon destinations:

  • Western Europe:  With so many types of destinations, Western Europe is a year-round destination. The peak season for coastal destinations runs from mid-May through October, and there are plenty of places with Christmas markets and amazing skiing that can be fun to visit in fall and winter.
  • Hawaii :  The island chain is a desirable destination year-round, but the peak months are mid-December through April when it’s colder on the U.S. mainland. Consider booking during a shoulder season for lower prices.
  • Southeast Asia:  Per Stockton, the cool and dry season in Thailand runs from November through April, and the high season in Vietnam hits around the same time frame.
  • Australia and New Zealand:  December through February is their summer, which is peak season. For that reason, many visitors choose shoulder months like March, April, and May (fall for them) or September through November (spring).
  •   Southern Africa:  High season runs November through March (their summer), but April through September still offers great wildlife viewing in Kruger National Park.

When to Book Accommodations and Travel

As the wedding industry is undergoing a boom, so is the travel industry. "After the past few years, there is such a high demand for travel that I recommend getting your trip booked as soon as possible," says Stockton. For international summer hot spots such as Santorini or the Amalfi Coast, that means at least six months out, while  safaris  and yacht or sailing charters should be booked eight to 12 months in advance. Domestic destinations with well-established tourism infrastructures and lots of accommodation options (think:  Napa Valley ,  Savannah ,  New England ) allow a little more leeway, but you’ll still want to book at least five to six months out to guarantee a great room during peak season.

"The most affordable rooms and specialty suites—rooms with private plunge pools, etc.—are the first to sell out, so booking early helps avoid disappointment," Stockton goes on to say. Thankfully, hotels generally release pricing and availability eight to 12 months in advance, and flights are released around 10 months out, so you’ll have ample time. That said, if you intend to use credit card points on flights, you’ll want to book as soon as the option opens up—sometimes a year in advance—as airlines often limit the number of awards tickets available per flight.

"Booking early is especially important if you don’t have much flexibility with your travel dates and/or budget," Stockton adds. "Prices are continuing to rise as airlines, hotels, and tour companies look to recoup money lost in 2020 and 2021, so the days of last-minute travel deals are largely gone."

Booking Tips

Know you don’t have to leave right away. .

Tradition used to dictate that couples left for their honeymoon the day after the wedding , which meant that when they honeymooned was explicitly tied to when they married. These days, however, many couples are dealing with busy schedules full of work and other friends’ weddings, and the options for where to honeymoon have greatly expanded. So if a different season makes more sense for your dream destination, don’t worry about waiting until several months after your wedding to head out on the trip. "After the wedding, you’re on such a high," says Stockton. "Delaying the honeymoon gives you something else to look forward to when you come down from Cloud Nine."

If you do plan to leave right away, Stockton recommends waiting at least one to two days after the wedding to depart. "Having to catch a 9 a.m. flight when you’ve been dancing all night can be tough," she says. "Before I started my travel business I was a wedding planner, and I have seen  many  couples miss flights the morning after their wedding."

Be flexible with your dates and destination.

"There is a lot of lore around scoring the best flight and hotel deals, but ultimately the best way to save money is to be flexible with your travel dates and destination," says Stockton. Traveling during shoulder seasons—the months before and after a destination’s peak season—opens up more possibilities in terms of accommodations, and choosing a more up-and-coming locale (like, say, Mallorca or Bodrum instead of the Amalfi Coast) often gets you more bang for your buck.

Whenever possible, check into hotels on Sunday or Monday. You’ll often pay a lower rate than if you were checking in on Thursday, Friday, or Saturday.

If budget allows, invest in a travel agent.

The immediate benefit of a travel agent is obvious: they’ll help you pick the best honeymoon destination for your budget and craft an itinerary of great accommodations and activities that would take you weeks to research and book on your own. They also come in handy for less obvious reasons.

While old movies might have you believing otherwise, telling a gate agent or front desk associate that it’s your honeymoon will most likely  not  score you a spur-of-the-moment upgrade. Bumps to business class are mostly reserved for passengers with status on that airline, and hotels often use an internal hierarchy to determine who gets perks first. At the top of that pyramid, though, are the clients of travel agents. "We have relationships with the hotel teams, and we foster those relationships to make sure our clients are treated as VIPS and are the first in line to receive upgrades," says Stockton.

The built-in, often on-call support can also be a total lifesaver in emergency situations. "If you miss a flight or test positive for COVID in another country you’ll be thankful you have a travel advisor handling the logistics for you," she adds.

honeymoon trip meaning

The True Origins Of The Term Honeymoon

Couple on Honeymoon

Modern honeymoons are post-nuptial romantic escapes so the newlyweds can decompress and celebrate surviving their wedding reception. Couples celebrate their brand new union by having oodles of uh, intimacy, and drinking too much champagne in picturesque, expensive locales. But a relaxing after-wedding vacation is a far cry from the true origins of the word honeymoon. So what does the term honeymoon mean, and where does it come from? The word honeymoon originates from the Old English expression " hony moone ." Let's break it down.

According to Dictionary.com , "hony" represents the sweetness of the new union. It also harkens back to the old European tradition of supplying newlyweds with sufficient mead for a month. One can see the logic. If you spend the month of marriage with a mead buzz, your partner's annoying idiosyncrasies won't wear on your nerves. Yet.

The Oxford English Dictionary (via Insider ) claims the first native-English usage of the word honeymoon, which appeared in a collection of stories penned by Maria Edgeworth in 1804, contained the English debut of the term honeymoon. There were other references to honeymoons in older literature as well.

Bride abduction

The sinister side of honeymoon history is the practice of bride theft which, like mead drinking, dates back to the era of Atilla the Hun , between A.D. 433 and 453 (via World History ).

According to The Journal of Roman Studies , although King Constantine vigorously denounced bride theft, marriage by abduction continued unabated. William Shepard Walsh described in his book " Curiosities of Popular Customs and of Rites, Ceremonies, Observances, and Miscellaneous Antiquities "  how in Northern Europe, husbands-to-be kidnapped the woman they hoped to wed, which is a slight improvement over getting clubbed over the head and dragged unconscious to some guy's cave. The groom's friends guarded the couple in case the bride's relatives of the bride demanded her return. Once the bride's family and friends gave up searching, the newlyweds returned to the husband's village. One of the likely contenders for the true origin of the word honeymoon is the practice of marriage by abduction. Now that's romance!

Mead and the moon

Brides reports that the term honeymoon originated in Scandinavia. Custom dictated that newlyweds must drink a cup of honey mead daily during their first month of marriage. So the "honey" in honeymoon is assumed to reference the mead drinking tradition. But what's the scoop on "moon"? Several theories exist that might explain the involvement of the moon. One lunar cycle lasts approximately a month, which happens to be the length of time newly married couples chugged down a daily glass of mead. It is also about how long it takes for the initial newlywed glow to wear off.

Richard Huloet, a 16th-century English lexicographer, wrote (via " How to Be Married "): "Hony mone, a term proverbially applied to such as be newly married, which will not fall out at the first, but th'one loveth the other at the beginning exceedingly, the likelihood of their exceadinge love appearing to aswage, ye which time the vulgar people call the hony mone."

I hope no one ever lets this guy do a wedding toast.

British adopt the Indian bridal tour

By the 1800s, British newlyweds began practicing an Indian tradition called the bridal tour. Country Living reports that the custom gained popularity in Europe during the 1820s as well. The new couple would travel through Europe with both sides of the family in tow. Clearly, the newly-married pair had little to no alone time. Newlyweds often incorporated bridal tours to visit family members who couldn't make it to the wedding. The bridal tour was a custom that only the very wealthy could afford to indulge in. A honeymoon tour usually lasted about a month, which became the standard amount of time allotted for a honeymoon. If you could afford to do so, of course. The CEO of Honeyfund, Sara Margulis, says that the Honeymoon, as we recognize it, didn't evolve until the late 1800s.

So newlyweds taking post-nuptials vacations purely as a pleasure trip were a boon for European tourism in the late 1800s. However, this honeymoon trend attracted many nay-sayers. Some physicians were concerned that the "weaker" sex couldn't withstand such a long trip. The weaker sex could endure birthing 10 babies and running a household, but a nice jaunt around the continent was just too much for the poor dears.

American honeymoons

When the honeymoon trend made it across the pond to the United States, the honeymoon had long since evolved into a post-wedding vacation . Americans, however, didn't feel the need to travel to Europe (via CNN ). The United States is a massive and diverse country with plenty of perfect honeymoon destinations within its borders, so residents would generally remain within their own country for their honeymoon. On the other hand, Europeans almost exclusively left their native countries during their honeymoons. Of course, relatively speaking, Western Europe comprises a smaller area than the United States, so the logic behind Americans remaining in their own country makes perfect sense.

According to PlanetWare , the U.S. boasts perfect honeymoon destinations such as Maui, Hawaii; Laguna Beach, California; Key West, Florida; New Orleans, Louisiana; and Big Sur, California. The United States is a country of outstanding beauty and versatility, so why dig out the passport if you're an American?

The long journey of the word honeymoon

Language is never static. It is ever-evolving. Words like honeymoon and the origins of their meaning are perfect examples of how etymology morphs and changes over the centuries, reinventing how we communicate and interact with each other. I doubt our ancestors pictured any of us being married by an Elvis impersonator in Vegas.

Honeymoons are never static either. The days of long bridal tours are a thing of the past, but new traditions have sprung up in its place. For example, destination weddings  are very popular. Beach weddings are also particularly fashionable, with the couple exchanging vows barefoot in the sand. It makes a lot of sense to tie the knot where you're honeymooning. But it can be a very expensive proposition for your friends and family, which pares down that wedding list quite nicely. If you can't elope, a destination wedding is the next best thing.

Do Not Copy Other People's Honeymoon Itinerary | Honeymoon Tips

Wedding planning can be so engaging that it’s risky to copy the honeymoon itinerary of another couple. But while your friends may have loved the all-inclusive, no-stress resort, you may find it tamps your adventurous spirit.

Or, maybe you’ve heard your parents remember their Bermuda honeymoon your entire life.  But for the two of you, it doesn’t mean it’s right.

It is fine to ask friends and family for advice, but take it with that common grain of salt. It is your honeymoon and it should be as per your likes and dislikes.

  • Balancing Relaxation and Exploration : Create an itinerary that balances relaxation and exploration. Allocate time for activities while leaving room for spontaneous moments.
  • Allotting Time for Activities : Plan specific activities but avoid over-scheduling. There is enough time for each experience, allowing the couple to immerse themselves fully.
  • Leaving Room for Spontaneity : Some of the best memories are made spontaneously. Leave gaps in the itinerary for unplanned adventures and serendipitous moments.

What Really Happens On A Honeymoon? Purpose & Significance Explained!

happens on a honeymoon

Honeymoons have so much pressure on them. You might be imagining yourself drunk in love, lounging in a luxe resort, and getting intimate innumerable times, right? Not necessarily. While a part of the honeymoon does have the blissful effect, the rest can feel, well, quite normal. So normal that you’d feel disappointed to have put so many expectations. What really happens on a honeymoon is a convoluted question with an even convoluted answer. It’s safe to assume that a honeymoon trip will be different for everyone. So, don’t compare your friends’ happy & hearty honeymoon experience with your own. (They could also be exaggerating.) Our tip is to take the pressure of the honeymoon and let it be the trip to celebrate the start of your adventurous married life. Be open to the experiences, get to know your spouse better, and enjoy the love flowing. Here’s the inside scoop on the history of a honeymoon, the purpose of a honeymoon trip, and what really happens on a honeymoon:

History Behind Honeymoon:

History Behind Honeymoon

The history, tradition, and meaning behind the honeymoon tradition will shock you. So, if you want to bring your coffee first and some savory snacks before we begin, you have our permission. Historians have dated the idea of a honeymoon to two particular traditions. One dates back to the 5th century in a number of European cultures when the time was measured in moon cycles. When a couple got married, they were presented with mead, an alcoholic beverage created by fermenting honey with water. The mead was believed to be an aphrodisiac and is supposed to establish sexual intimacy between the couple, and in those days, it was done in hope of conception. The newly-weds were supposed to drink this *honey*-based alcohol after their first *moon* together, and hence the phrase honeymoon.

Another belief says that the history of honeymoon dates back to the time of *bride kidnapping*. You read that right. It’s okay to take a sip of your coffee. The term means exactly as it sounds. In a few cultures, the groom was allowed to kidnap the bride and keep her away from her family members. This would end when the angry kid would either give up the search or the bride would become pregnant. Weirdly, this period was called honeymoon then. Later when this practice ceased to exist, the honeymoon abduction was practiced with the permission of the bride’s father. The groom and his family members pay a handsome price to the bride’s family and have a public ceremony before the “abduction”.

The term’s description, however, can be traced back to 1542 when English writer Samuel Johnson wrote the following about the tradition of honeymoon, “The first month after marriage when there is nothing but tenderness and pleasure; originally having no reference to the period of a month, but comparing mutual affection of newly-married persons to the changing moon which is no sooner full that it begins to wane…” Basically translated to the love between two newly-weds will wane away with time, or after one month or the honeymoon period, according to the author.

The cynicism doesn’t end there.

In 1552, an English lexicographer described honeymoon as, “Hony mone, a term proverbially applied to such as be newly married, which will not fall out at first, but th’ one loveth the other at the beginning exceedingly, the likelihood of their exceedings love appearing to assuage, ye which time the vulgar people call the honey mone.” Translation: While the newlyweds are drunk in love during the honeymoon period, it won’t last long. He also names anyone who calls it a *honeymoon* as *vulgar*.

Moving on.

The honeymoon custom was revolutionized by the month-long trips newlyweds used to take in 18th century Britain. But it wasn’t the usual, romantic trip couples take right now. The trip was meant to meet friends & family across the country who couldn’t make it to the ceremony. This was reserved for the upper class and the concept of honeymoon (as it is today) didn’t become mainstream until the late 18th century when modern mass tourism took a full swing.

Today, the honeymoon is all about celebrating love, togetherness, and wedded status. Thank god, it’s reached that.

What is the purpose of a honeymoon trip?

purpose of a honeymoon trip

Disregarding the role honeymoons played earlier and getting over the trauma, the purpose of a honeymoon trip is simple. It’s so the newlyweds can celebrate their marital status, soak in some quality time together, and create some memorable moments as spouses. This has become increasingly important now, considering the stress and starting the wedding planning and the wedding can have on couples. Most engaged partners start fighting and experience more differences during the wedding planning process than in the period preceding the engagement. By the end, all they’re looking forward to is for the wedding to happen and take off for their honeymoon soon after to finally set their relationship fun alive. Nowadays, couples have started to take a mini-moon, a short trip right after the wedding before the longer trip happens on a later date.

This is what really happens on a honeymoon:

You will feel a sense of bliss.

After the exhausting days of wedding planning and the thrill of wedding revelries, it will take some time to soak in your newly-married status. This will happen on your honeymoon. You will love to tell people you’re married, the receptionist at the hotel will address you as *Mr. & Mrs.*, you will probably also make it Instagram-official, there will be congratulatory messages, and many other things happening around will give you the sense of bliss that you’re finally married to the love of your life! Weddings also seldom give the bride and groom enough time to converse and enjoy any time together. Honeymoon gives them the perfect opportunity to celebrate their love and togetherness.

Sex won’t be an everyday occurrence

Whenever anyone speaks of a honeymoon, there’s a tendency to picture tons of intimacy and sex, which you should know isn’t as common as it’s denoted in the general narrative. One bride shared that their honeymoon was a cozy, memorable experience, but the sex sure didn’t happen that often. “We left the day after our wedding, so naturally we were exhausted. It took us a day or two of rest and tonnes of sleep to get over all tiredness. The next 8 days, I think we had sex once or twice a day – unlike what I was picturing would be 4 times every day. I did speak to my other married friends and they all experienced the same trajectory. One confessed to having had sex only 4 times on their week-long honeymoon,” the bride told us. Clearly, we need to move on from the honeymoon = sex narrative. If you want to do it, do it. But if as a couple, chilling and relaxing without worrying too much about sex works, then so be it. Not having sex often certainly doesn’t mean you aren’t doing honeymoon right.

There will be tons of hearty conversations

Any trip you share with your loved ones is sure to bring you closer, but there’s just something different about your honeymoon. These first few days of sharing the new marital status will open room for many conversations and hearty talk. It really hits you on your honeymoon that you’re on the crazy journey of life together. This will open door to deeper conversations, fun moments, and lengthy chit-chats. Plus, your wedding will be the first time when you’ll see the other partner’s extended family and while you must have heard tonnes of stories about them before, seeing them face-to-face opens doors to many more stories. Prepare to spend hours just talking and bonding with each other. Definitely one of the interesting things that happens on a honeymoon.

You will bask in simple things

What Really Happens On A Honeymoon

On your honeymoon, simple things like catching a sunrise, having morning coffee, taking a mid-night stroll, and watching a movie will be special. In fact, while on your normal days, the morning coffee seems like a mundane thing, which you probably gulp down as your rush to work, on your honeymoon, you will try to bask in the aromatic taste of coffee and make time to watch the sun coming up as you take every sip. If waking up sounds not-too-vacation-ey for you, then plan to catch a sunset with some wine, holding hands, and lounging on your comfortable sofa. All in all, you will be slowing down and enjoying each moment of your life on a typical honeymoon.

There can be some fights

We understand that this might be the last thing you want to hear, but there will be fights. Married life is blissful, but it also puts a ton of pressure on anyone’s individuality. Finances, family planning, responsibility, in-laws, etc. are a few things newlyweds aren’t able to see eye-to-eye. Further, a few fights from the wedding planning timeline can drag onto the honeymoon. Emotions are running high for both parties, and it’s totally normal to argue. There’s absolutely no need to speculate the future together. The best thing to do when this happens on a honeymoon is to hold off the fight until you both calm down, take a few minutes to reflect, and start with a solution-oriented approach (which study shows how happy couples choose to resolve conflicts).

You will plan the future life together

Now that you’re married, it’s natural to think about the next step together. And of course, we realize that you’d have thought about the key issues of how many children do you want to have, where do you want to live, and other important aspects already, but there will be more things that happen as life happens. It’s also a natural human tendency to know where they’re going or at least have some plan. A honeymoon gives the ideal time to have these conversations in quaint and quiet.

It may not be as thrilling of an experience as you’d have imagined

The best thing you can do before starting to celebrate a honeymoon is to not put a lot of expectations on the experience. We understand this is a special trip and a once-in-a-lifetime experience, but putting more expectations than it can live upto will probably just sadden you in the end. Before boarding the flight, we’d recommend planning with your SO what’s on your mind. From intimacy to adventure and sightseeing, it’s best to have both individuals on the same page to avoid any fallouts later. Getting on the same page is the best step to have a positive and fulfilling vacation together.

You will eat a lot

What Really Happens On A Honeymoon

Eating is one of the best ways to celebrate a honeymoon, or anything else, literally. We know you’ve maintained a strict diet to get in proper shape for the wedding, but it’s time to indulge in your favorite foods again. Also, even when you’ve spent months planning the delicious wedding feast, it’s unlikely you’d be able to relish any of the dishes well. It’s time to compensate for everything. We hope you’ve taken an all-inclusive package that includes meals. (If you haven’t booked the honeymoon deal yet, take care of this!) Order some flavorsome meals or go to a romantic restaurant and devour as you’ve never eaten before.

You will crave relaxation more than adventure

While you might be googling some crazy things to do on a honeymoon because that’s what these first trips are meant to do! – engage in some thrill into your newly married life. Um, no. What you’d want to do on the honeymoon is to just chill and relax. Here’s what one bride shared, “We had planned a full water sports day for our honeymoon in the Maldives . When we arrived though, we changed our plan. It’s just staying in the suite, reading, talking, playing board games was so fun that we didn’t go out for any activities even for a day. We were tired from the wedding, yes, but also, we needed to slow down to enjoy this special married couple status together.” Another bride shared the same feeling, “I think honeymoons are to connect with your partner. And the serenity of a honeymoon suite did just that. So we stayed in. Except for the occasional beach walks.”

You will feel closer to your partner

One of the things that happens on a honeymoon, or rather after a honeymoon, is you will feel a lot closer to your partner. The uninterrupted quality time, the newly-wed status, the immense love, and the wholehearted conversations will all bring you closer to your partner. Isn’t that the whole purpose of a honeymoon as well? To cherish your newly-wed status and eventually bring you closer so you can step onto the crazy journey of life with just happiness, gratitude, and faith in your heart.

Honeymoons, Babymoons, and Other Moons

honeymoons and babymoons

Honeymoon was used in its more figurative, original sense, during the 16th and 17th centuries. It wasn't until the late 1700s that is gained the sense we most commonly associate with it now: "a trip or vacation taken by a newly married couple."

This later sense of honeymoon gave rise to a few other "moons," including the modern buddymoon ( taking your friends with you on your honeymoon ) and babymoon , which we just entered into our Unabridged Dictionary. Babymoon , a blend of "baby" and the "-moon" in honeymoon , was first used in the early 1990s to refer to a period of time for parents to spend alone with their new child soon after the child's birth. But influenced by the "trip" sense of honeymoon , it soon gained another meaning: "a trip or vacation taken by a couple shortly before the birth of a child." That's right, before . Evidently the sweetest days of new parenthood happen before the baby arrives.

Anyone planning a wedding knows it's more than simply orchestrating one event. If this sounds like you, then you'll love these handy honeymoon travel agents and planning services that will customize your ideal itinerary from the inspiration phase down to that final romantic meal. A Local Honeymoon Travel Agent

sedona under starry skies romantic for couples

Every couple is different: some prefer to outsource honeymoon planning virtually—send an email and in the words of Elsa, "Let it go." Others seek the services of vetted luxury travel advisors with a 100% batting average (meaning five-star ratings) within the text group. A cohort of couples wants to connect meaningfully with their chosen local travel agent. Then there are those who are besties with their wedding coordinator, the types who like the personal experience of knowing their honeymoon travel agent. Look no further than The Knot Marketplace , where wedding travel advisors are its own standalone category. Search for reviews, testimonials and more on The Knot.

One of the newer names in the game, Elsewhere is making a splash for its hyper-localized approach to trip planning. "[Most companies hire] experts who are passionate about creating unforgettable experiences tailored to unique desires and interests," says Craig Zapatka, co-founder of the travel company. "Elsewhere takes this a step further: our advisors are in the destination. Each is from the chosen location and has up-to-date local insight that cannot always be found in blogs or guidebooks." The company is also mindful of the precariousness of travel, especially during volatile or peak seasons when the volume of the crowd balloons—it happens to the best of us. Elsewhere ensures each member of its team is vetted as a local expert with proper training. "You should only work with licensed and insured travel advisors and agents," says Zapatka. "Similar to choosing fiduciaries when you pick a financial advisory, the same rules apply to travel advisors."

Black Tomato

Fact: This editor randomly met newlyweds in a remote part of Africa whose itinerary was crafted by their Black Tomato honeymoon travel agent. Their experience gave clout to the award-winning tour operators, already known for crafting luxurious, off-the-beaten-path, and romantic adventures you've been craving for years on end. "Working with a travel company can alleviate logistical stress, and especially working with a travel expert, and destination, like those at Black Tomato, ensures that guidance comes from someone who is well-versed and frequently travels to the area," says Carly Moss, travel expert at the company. "The planning process allows for the couple and travel expert to become well acquainted with each other and feels more like taking advice from a friend, with serious chops and knowledge, rather than a business transaction, further contributing to ease and stress-free coordination ahead of the trip."

So don't spook yourself by typing "honeymoon ideas" into your search bar—instead, get in touch with a trip consultant whose only job is to listen to you and learn all about your travel preferences. They're also available 24/7 in case you have any burning questions, even after you touch down in paradise.

5 Best Iceland honeymoon experiences

If you’re looking for some quick recommendations for the very best things to do on your Iceland honeymoon, here are some of our favorite experiences…

  • Soak in luxurious hot springs
  • Explore Diamond Beach and Jökulsárlón Glacial Lagoon
  • Stay in a remote & romantic hotel
  • Go on a once-in-a-lifetime Icelandic adventure
  • See the Northern Lights

Want more info on how to do these yourself? Or do you want more ideas for things to do on your Iceland honeymoon?

We’ve gotcha covered. Keep scrolling for all the good stuff…

1. Stay in Iceland’s most romantic guesthouses

guesthouse in Iceland

For a small country, Iceland has an incredible assortment of accommodation .

From cozy cottages with unparalleled hospitality to unique glamping experiences in the middle of the Icelandic countryside to stylish apartments in Reykjavik’s city center, Iceland truly has it all.

You could stay in a different type of accommodation each night of your Iceland honeymoon to experience them all.

Want some specific hotel ideas? Jump down to some of our favorite romantic hotels that will be perfect for your Iceland honeymoon.

2. Indulge in Iceland’s cuisine

Icelandic Food | Two Wandering Soles

Icelandic cuisine is heavy on fresh seafood, lamb, and creative preparations.

Being that Iceland is an island nation at the edge of the Arctic, they are innovative when it comes to growing their own produce using geothermal powered greenhouses. So you’ll see a focus on sustainable and locally-grown ingredients.

If you and your partner like food (hello fellow foodie!), there are some incredible foodie experiences you’ll definitely want to include on your Iceland honeymoon :

  • Bake rye bread underground using geothermal power.
  • Eat lunch in a greenhouse where all the vegetables in your meal are grown.
  • Have the freshest langoustines of your life with ocean views.
  • Splurge at one of Reykjavik’s many high end restaurants.
  • Use the code TWS10 for a 10% discount on your tour .

Want more info on any of these foodie experiences? We’ve got everything you need to know right here .

3. See Diamond Beach sparkle

Diamond Beach Iceland

One of the most unique places in Iceland is Diamond Beach and the neighboring Glacier Lagoon.

Watch the waves crash on this black sand beach amid sparkling chunks of ice that look like gemstones . It really is magical.

Corny photo alert…

If you (or your partner) has a diamond wedding band, this could be a fun, albeit a little corny, photo op! #diamondsondiamonds

Psst! If you’re a photographer, you’ll want your tripod here. (We love this inexpensive and lightweight travel tripod .)

When you’re done at Diamond Beach, a short walk brings you to Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon. Here, you’ll find icebergs of all shapes, sizes and shades of blue and white.

Insider Tip: Budget enough time here to sit with your hunny and see if you can spot seals popping in and out of the water amongst the icebergs.

Both of these landmarks will surely be a highlight of your Iceland honeymoon.

4. Soak in luxury hot springs

Blue Lagoon Iceland

If you want to feel pampered, there’s no better place at one of Iceland’s many luxurious hot spring resorts.

Blue Lagoon

The most famous of them all is the iconic Blue Lagoon. Being that it is located very close to Keflavik Airport, this makes a perfect stop at the beginning or end of your trip.

Yes, it’s popular, but for good reason. We would definitely recommend adding it to your Iceland honeymoon itinerary.

Sky Lagoon Iceland

Another fantastic option is the newly opened Sky Lagoon. Not far from the center of Reykjavik, this luxurious infinity pool-style hot spring doesn’t (yet) have the same iconic status of the Blue Lagoon, but it likely will soon.

There is a 7-step “Ritual” experience you can add to your entry ticket for an additional cost, which grants you access to a (stunning!) sauna,  plunge pool, body scrub, cool mist, and other luxuries.

If you’re into hot springs, we’d recommend both the Sky Lagoon and Blue Lagoon as they are quite different experiences.

Hvammsvik Hot Springs

Just 45 minutes from Reykjavik, these hot springs are a nice blend of natural and luxury.

This is an established hot spring resort, but the pools are situated at the edge of the ocean and change with the tides.

5. Soak off the beaten path

Best Hot Springs in Iceland | Fosslaug Hot Spring

If getting off the beaten path turns you on, this might be more your style…

As much as we love the indulgent experience at hot spring resorts, like those mentioned above, we personally are even more obsessed with natural hot springs.

While not as polished as the resorts, we find wild hot springs to be romantic in their own way. There’s something special about soaking in nature and feeling like you’ve discovered a hidden gem.

You may be lucky and have the hot spring all to yourself (aka the epitome of honeymoon romance), or a more likely scenario is that you’ll share the spring with a handful of others who you can chat with (if you’re feeling friendly).

Here are two of our favorite natural hot springs in Iceland:

Reykjadalur Thermal River

Reykjadalur Hot Spring River Iceland

Getting to this spot requires a bit of a hike (about 1 hour each way), but when you see a steaming river carving its way through the grassy hills, you’ll be happy you made the effort.

Find out everything you need to know in our ultimate guide to Reykjadalur Thermal River .

Fosslaug Hot Springs

Located not far off the Ring Road in the north of Iceland, this hot spring is a bit off the beaten path, but it’s pretty dang scenic. We got lucky and had this one completely to ourselves for a romantic soak!

We also have a complete guide to visiting Fosslaug & nearby Reykjafoss Waterfall .

Psst! For more hot springs (both luxury and natural), see our Iceland hot springs guide .

6. Hire a photographer for the best Iceland souvenir

Golden Circle Iceland | Bruarfoss

What better souvenir from your honeymoon than photos of you and your new beau in a place that will forever be special to you. And the backdrop for photoshoots in Iceland is just unreal .

On a recent trip, we hired a local photographer through Airbnb Experiences and had the best time. We will 100% be doing this on future trips, as it was the perfect way to get quality pictures of ourselves on a special trip.

One thing I’ve realized is I will never regret paying for photos. You can never go back to that moment and capture it again. So it really is a special experience.

Plus, you get to hang out with a local for a couple hours and see things you might otherwise miss.

There are lots of super talented photographers in Iceland that specialize in these types of photoshoots.

Here’s a fun idea: Book a photographer and surprise your new husband/wife on your honeymoon with a fun “date” day and the most special souvenir!

Here are some recommendations for Icelandic photographers:

Top Rated: Secret Spots of Iceland Photoshoot

  • Photographer’s name: Luke
  • Location : start and end in Reykjavik
  • Duration: 7 hours

This full-day photo tour starts and ends near Reykjavik and includes 4×4 transportation to some incredible, off-the-beaten-path sights.

While this is one of the more expensive photo tours, the pictures Luke takes are stunning and guests rave about this experience, with more than 100 reviews (almost all are 5 stars).

Here’s what guests are saying:

“Amazing experience in Iceland. It is worth every penny. The locations and pictures were fantastic and Luke was a great tour guide and photographer. I would highly recommend.” -Chelsea, August 2022
“Don’t think twice, just book this tour with Luke! He’s very professional and friendly with lots of cool stories to share. We were very fortunate to be the only couple with him that day, not to mention the weather that day could not have been more perfect for us! As many of the reviews have already shared here, the places he took us were out-of-this-world beautiful! He made sure we had lots of amazing photos from the trip! He does great work. Definitely going to be a memorable experience!” – Maribeth, August 2022

Most epic locations: Southern Coast Photo Tours

  • Location: Southern Coast (pick up and drop off in Reykjavik)
  • Duration: 10 hours

If you want the backdrop of your photos to be some of the most iconic spots in Iceland – think Vik, Skogafoss or Reynisfjara Beach – book a tour where you’ll get to learn about these places from a local while they document the experience in beautiful photographs.

These photo tours are also a really good idea if you are limited on time but want to see some of the top attractions in Iceland.

There are 2 highly-reviewed photographers that lead similar tours in this region:

Photographer name: Danny

“If you’re looking for a special experience with memories for a lifetime with a special photographer look no further and book now the trip from start to finish was amazing and exceeded all expectations across-the-board knowledgeable kind patient recommended great restaurants took us to an amazing lunch by the waterfall he also specializes in the northern lights book him if you have the opportunity.” – Samantha, August 2022 [Southern Coast Tour]
Psst! Danny also has a highly-sought-after Northern Lights photo experience . So if you happen to be traveling in Iceland during peak Northern Lights season (October – March), this might be worth looking into!

Photographer name: Michal

“Best. Tour. EVER! Mike is super knowledgeable and flippin’ hilarious. He’s so thoughtful to make sure everyone has an amazing experience down to the little details like bottled water, wifi, rain slickers, etc. Small group (just four of us) was ideal, and by the end of the day we were all besties. Visited beautiful and amazing Iceland sights but honestly Mike is what made this day so special. I’d pay money just to hang out with him more.” – Katie, January 2023

Short & Budget Friendly: Photowalks in Reykjavik

  • Location: Reykjavik
  • Duration: 1.5 – 2 hours

If you would prefer a shorter photoshoot experience and like the idea of a city backdrop rather than going on a full day excursion, there are a handful of Reykjavik photographers to choose from.

Here are 2 options that we’d recommend:

  • Photowalk with Kristina : 1.5 hours and slightly more expensive
  • Photowalk with Lisa : 2 hours and a bit more budget-friendly
Psst! If you’re really into photography, we have a list of the best photo spots in Iceland that you won’t want to miss!

7. Feel small next to Iceland’s most impressive waterfalls

Iceland waterfall

We’ve never been anywhere with nearly as many waterfalls as Iceland.

They come in all types and sizes:

There are the massive, iconic waterfalls just about every Iceland tourist visits. And then there’s those that require a hike to reach and feel like a secret spot.

Whatever kind of waterfall you fancy, you’ll be able to find it!

Check out our favorite waterfalls in Iceland for inspiration.

8. Take a long walk on a Black Sand Beach

Black Sand Beach Vik Iceland

While you won’t be able to kick back with a piña colada beneath palm trees while in Iceland, you can do something even more unique…

Lace up your hiking boots (trust me, you won’t want to go barefoot very long!), and take a long walk down one of the most famous black sand beaches in the world.

Located just minutes from the town of Vik, Reynisfjara Black Sand Beach is an otherworldly sight and is well worth a stop on your Iceland honeymoon.

9. Drive the Ring Road (or part of it)

Driving Ring Road Iceland

Encircling all of Iceland, driving the Ring Road makes one of the best road trips in the world .

The entire drive totals in at 828 miles (1,332 km) and would take roughly 13 hours if you drive it straight through. That said, the best part of driving the Ring Road is all of the epic stops along the way.

Our advice is if you have 1 week in Iceland or less, only do part of the Ring Road. There are guides out there for 1 week Ring Road itineraries, so why do we recommend against this?

If you only have 1 week to drive the entire Ring Road, it will feel very rushed and you will need to skip lots of the most epic stops. You will also be driving long days, arriving at your accommodations late at night. You won’t be able to do many hikes or hot spring soaks.

I don’t know about you, but all the rushing around doesn’t sound very romantic.

And here’s the thing…

Iceland’s Southern Coast is arguably the most beautiful and has the highest concentration of epic stops . So we recommend you concentrate your time in this area so you have less time in the car and more time for adventuring.

And for, well, romantic stuff, too.

FYI: Our Iceland honeymoon itinerary includes the very best stops in the Southern Coast region and is set up so you’re not too rushed.

Have longer? If you have 10 days to 2 weeks in Iceland, driving the Ring Road is more doable and you won’t feel too rushed.

10. Have a once-in-a-lifetime adventure

Things to Do in Iceland | Two Wandering Soles

If you’re excited to tick off bucket list items or do something a little crazy , Iceland makes the perfect honeymoon.

There truly are so many unique adventures in the land of fire and ice, and once you visit, you’ll agree that there’s no other place like it on earth.

So what is it that you want to do?

  • Go whale watching
  • Take a scenic helicopter ride
  • Go ice climbing on a glacier
  • Kayak in a glacial lagoon
  • Snorkel in between 2 tectonic plates
  • Walk through an ice cave
  • Descend inside a volcano

Well, you can do all of the above (and more!) in Iceland, making this country the perfect choice for adventurous couples.

Check out these other top things to do in Iceland to add to your bucket list!

11. Be mesmerized by the Northern Lights

Northern Lights from Reykjavik campsite Iceland

Seeing the Northern Lights would make your Iceland honeymoon complete, wouldn’t it?

This magical dancing phenomenon is on many travelers’ bucket lists, and Iceland is one of the best places in the world to see them.

Things to know about seeing the Northern Lights in Iceland

  • You’ll be most likely to see them between the months of October through March
  • Psst! Here are more Iceland travel apps that will be helpful!
  • Stay in a remote area (away from the city) for the best conditions
  • Even though they are most common in the winter (and you have longer periods of darkness), it’s not impossible to spot them at other times of the year

If seeing the Northern Lights is top priority for your Iceland honeymoon, consider booking a guesthouse that is in the countryside and has large windows for optimal viewing.

Psst! Check out this highly-sought-after Northern Lights photo tour . It would be the perfect way to document this bucket list experience.

12. Go on an unforgettable hike

Waterfall Circle Iceland

If you’re an avid hiker, you’ll be happy to know there are tons of incredible hikes in Iceland.

From short and sweet trails that bring you to epic viewpoints to treks that are truly adventurous and require a bit of planning, there are hikes for every type of traveler .

Be sure to pack a pair of waterproof hiking boots, as you’ll likely encounter some rain (and therefore muddy trails) on your trip.

Our recommendations for a challenging hike:

Fimmvörðuháls Hike

If you want a challenging and bucket list worthy hike suggestion, we recommend the Fimmvörðuháls Hike. It’s a long day trip and requires some planning, but we’ve got everything you need to know in our Fimmvörðuháls Hiking Guide .

Glymur Waterfall Hike

For another challenging hike that won’t take all day, the trek to Glymur Waterfall is incredible. It is the second tallest waterfall in Iceland and is well worth the effort required to get there.

And… If you want suggestions that are, well, shorter and easier , we’ve got you covered there too with a list of amazing hikes in Iceland .

13. Get really adventurous in a campervan

Campervan at Skogafoss

Going out on a limb here, but if you’re a really adventurous couple, like really adventurous, you might want to consider renting a camper van for your Iceland honeymoon !

We are really into all things related to vanlife (and have built 3 of our own campervans!), but we know it’s not for everyone.

If you’re leaning toward a more luxurious and romantic honeymoon, we’d recommend opting for getting a car rental and guesthouses along the way.

But if you think you might be interested in the motorhome route, we’ve got a guide to choosing the best Iceland campervan rental for your trip. We’ve got personal experience and all sorts of tips to share with you to make planning this epic adventure easier.

14. Explore the romantic seaside town of Vik

Best Time to Visit Iceland | Two Wandering Soles

There are all sorts of cute towns in Iceland, but few are as picturesque or packed with things to do and see than Vik.

We’d recommend saving a spot for Vik on your Iceland honeymoon itinerary, as this is a good base for lots of adventure (and good eating!). We’ve rounded up the best things to do in Vik as well as where to eat and stay in our Vik, Iceland guide .

15. Cozy up with cocktails in Reykjavik

Reykjavik Iceland cocktails

Reykjavik is a small but mighty city, with world-class restaurants and bars to choose from.

Snuggle up in a booth with handcrafted cocktails and decompress and reminisce about your wedding. Or stop in an intimate lounge at the end of your trip and talk about your favorite memories you made on your Iceland honeymoon.

It doesn’t get much more romantic than that.

Want more fun ideas? We’ve got a list of the very best things to do in Reykjavik (plus a can’t-miss bakery that you will definitely want to visit!).

16. Drive the iconic Golden Circle

honeymoon trip meaning

If it’s your first trip to Iceland, the Golden Circle is one of those must-do attractions .

This famed driving route consists of a waterfall, a geyser and a national park, and all can be explored in just a few hours to 2 days.

We have the ultimate Golden Circle route that includes the 3 must-see attractions as well as some off-the-beaten-path spots most travelers miss.

17. Explore the magical Studlagil Canyon

Stuðlagil Canyon - Instagram shot

The hexagon basalt columns of Studlagil Canyon are unlike anything you’ve ever seen, making this one of the most unique places to visit in Iceland.

If you and your hunny are up for a bit of adventure, make the detour off of the Ring Road and hike to this magical spot.

Insider Tip: Our advice is to get there as early as possible because this spot is Insta-famous, meaning you’ll be sharing it with lots of other people if you get there later in the day. It will be much more intimate and romantic if there are fewer crowds. Trust us!

We’ve got everything you need to know about exploring Studlagil Canyon (including how to get there which is actually a bit confusing!).

Your wish is my command. Yes, for real.

We spent hours upon hours planning the perfect Iceland honeymoon for one of my best friends.

We dialed in everything .

From the perfect romantic hotels to the best restaurants along the way (complete with tips on what to order!).

We included the top sights in Iceland that you just have to see as well as some epic off-the-beaten-path adventures so they felt like the only two people in the world.

And they had the best time…

Here’s what they had to say:

“We had the most amazing time in Iceland for our honeymoon! We followed the TWS itinerary almost exactly and it made everything so easy (talk about stress free vacation planning after a wedding, yes please!). Honestly, we just keep raving about it.  The itinerary is so well organized and has an incredible amount of detail! We loved it and it made our trip flow very smoothly. We cannot thank them enough for putting this content together and would highly recommend it for anyone looking to adventure in Iceland. There are a ton of options to pick and choose from so you can customize your own perfect trip.” – Tracy & Steve, 2023

If you want to copy the exact itinerary I made for them, you can grab it by clicking the button below.

Trust me when I say, this is an absolute steal. It will save you countless hours of planning, and will ensure your honeymoon goes seamlessly.

7 Reasons Iceland makes a perfect Honeymoon

Vik Iceland church view

Are you still not totally sold on Iceland as a honeymoon destination?

Spoiler Alert: We think you will be after reading this list!

We’re sharing exactly why we think Iceland makes a perfect honeymoon!

1. Blend of Luxury & Adventure

There aren’t many places in the world that have such a perfect blend of luxury and adventure .

Climb glaciers and go hiking by day, then enjoy world-class dining, spa treatments and comfortable accommodation by night.

If you’re anything like us, you’ll want your honeymoon to be full of unforgettable adventures you’ll be reminiscing about for decades to come, paired with romantic accommodation and a handful of splurge-worthy meals and a dash of pampering.

If this sounds like the ideal recipe for a honeymoon, you will love Iceland. Trust us.

2. Once-in-a-lifetime Experiences

Iceland Volcano

Packed with adventures, Iceland is the perfect place to check off bucket list experiences .

I mean, there aren’t many places in the world where you can go whale watching, hike on a glacier, walk through an ice cave, see the Northern lights, and soak in world famous hot springs!

Plus, the landscapes in Iceland are unlike anywhere else in the world. You’ll see volcanoes, black sand beaches, interesting rock formations and more waterfalls than you can count.

There’s truly no other place in the world like it.

3. Easily accessible

If you live in North America or Europe, getting to Iceland is actually pretty easy (and usually quite affordable).

There are many nonstop flights directly to Reykjavik , making this island nation more accessible than you might think.

4. You’ll feel like the only people in the world

Iceland hot springs

There are few places in the world as wild as Iceland.

If you want, you can find spots that you have completely to yourself.

You’ll feel wild and free and small all at the same time. And you will certainly feel like the only two people in the world at some point on your Iceland honeymoon!

5. It’s unique

Choose a honeymoon that’s as unique as you are!

If you and your partner are looking for something different than the typical honeymoon , Iceland sure fits the bill.

This definitely won’t be your standard sit-on-the-beach-with-a-daiquiri honeymoon, after all.

An Iceland honeymoon will mean you start off your marriage with a trip that feels undeniably like you.

6. It’s a perfect splurge trip

Sky Lagoon Iceland hot springs

I’ll be totally transparent with you: Iceland isn’t a great budget destination. Sure, you can travel to Iceland with limited funds (our first trip to Iceland was on a very tight budget, and we had a great time!).

Psst! We even have some money-saving tips for Iceland to help you out!

However, if you want to do some bucket list tours, take a road trip, or experience the local cuisine, it’s not going to be cheap.

And in our opinion, it’s not the best solo trip either. We know plenty of people who have traveled to Iceland alone. But due to the high cost of accommodation and tours, many solo travelers end up joining tour groups.

So what better time of your life than your honeymoon to visit this splurge-worthy destination?!

Since it’s a (hopefully!) once-in-a-lifetime trip, you’ll feel more willing to splurge on an expensive tour or a meal at a nice restaurant (both of which Iceland has plenty). This way, you’ll be able to do the best things this country has to offer.

Plus, you’ll be traveling with your person so you can split the costs and have someone to make memories with.

7. Your itinerary is already planned

Yep, you read that right.

One of my best friends asked me to plan her Iceland honeymoon for her, and I spent countless hours curating the perfect itinerary with equal parts luxury and adventure.

And I’m sharing this perfect itinerary with you!

We’ve been to Iceland 3 times and have included all sorts of insider tips and things we’ve learned along the way so you don’t need to make any mistakes on your honeymoon.

If you want to save the time and headache of planning, grab your very own Iceland honeymoon itinerary and get ready for the trip of a lifetime!
