What To Know

  • Choose Safari from the top menu, and About Safari . The version number will be on the window that pops up.
  • On iOS, go to Settings > General > Software Update . Your iOS version and Safari version are the same. (Example: iOS 11 = Safari 11)

This article explains how to find the version of Safari that you're running on a Mac and an iOS device.

Find the Safari Version Number on a Mac

To determine which version of Safari is installed on a Mac computer:

Go to the dock and select the Safari icon to open the Safari browser.

Choose About Safari under the Safari menu.

A small window appears with the browser version number.

The first number, located before the parenthesis, is the current version of Safari. The longer second number (located inside the parentheses) is the WebKit/Safari Build version. For example, if the dialog box displays Version 11.0.3 (13604.5.6), the Safari version number is 11.0.3.

Find the Safari Version Number on an IOS Device

Because Safari is part of the iOS operating system, its version is the same as the current version of iOS that you have.

To see the iOS version currently installed on an iPhone or iPad, follow the instructions below.

Open Settings .

Select General .

Select Software Update . The number that appears at the top of the screen next to iOS is the version number. For example, if your iPhone or iPad is running iOS 11.2.6, then it is running Safari 11. If your device is running iOS 12.1.2, it is running Safari 12, and so on.

Underneath the version number, you'll either see "Your software is up to date" or a prompt to update to the latest version.

As of October, 2022, the current version of Safari on Mac, iPad, and iPhone is 16.0.

First, turn off automatic updates by opening System Preferences and selecting Software Update , then turning off Automatically keep my Mac up to date . After that, either restore a Time Machine backup that included an older version of Safari, or downgrade to an earlier version of macOS .

How to Tell What Version of Safari Is on My iPhone

Apple Holds Product Launch Event At New Campus In Cupertino

The Safari app is part of iOS, so Apple keeps this mobile browser up to date with your phone's operating system. For the past several iOS releases, the Safari version number has been consistent with the iOS version number: If your iPhone runs iOS 12, you have Safari 12 installed. Look at your iPhone's settings for a general idea of which Safari version you have. If you want more detailed information about your version number and features, use an online tool to detect your browser's version number.

About Safari Versions and Updates

Video of the Day

Apple usually references Safari versions in general with a whole number, such as Safari 11 or Safari 12. However, as with the macOS version of Safari, the full version number of mobile Safari can contain periods and sets of numbers that semantically identify minor changes and bug fixes. For example, your computer's version might say Safari 12.01, while your phone might run Safari 12.0.

Because the mobile Safari app is native to iOS, whenever you update iOS, the browser is updated. Often, these updates offer security fixes to keep you safe while browsing, but they can also add new functionality. For example, Safari 12 added features that include an augmented reality model viewer and strong password generator for your iPhone.

Check Safari Version on iPhone

You can check your phone's version of iOS to get a general idea of which version of Safari it runs, although this won't tell you the extended version number of Safari you have. Open your iPhone's Settings app, tap "General" and then "About." The phone's iOS version is listed beside "Version" Pay attention specifically to the number before the decimal point. For example, if your phone runs iOS 12.1, then you have Safari 12. Likewise, if you have iOS 11.4, then you're running Safari 11.

Another way to check the iOS version is to connect your phone to your computer. Open iTunes and select your phone in the list of devices to see the version in the information pane on the right.

Check Safari Version Online

If you'd rather not dig through your iPhone's menus and want to know the extended version number, there's a way to check your Safari version with the help of websites such as Spiderip and WhatIsMyBrowser. Use your phone's Safari app to visit the home page of one of these sites to see information about your version of Safari, your iOS version and other browser details.

Some sites immediately list the browser version on top to make it easy to find. For others, you need to do some extra work to look for a string of text called the "user agent." This string can be long and is separated with forward slashes. Look for the browser version information near the end, where you see a version identified like "12.0 Mobile" followed by text that mentions Safari. This example means you're running Safari 12.0.

These online tools work because they get information from your browser's user agent, which is a string of text identifying your device that is sent in the request made when you visit a website. Some of these tools can inform you if your browser or iOS version is outdated or whether your browser settings can cause some sites not to work properly.

Keep Safari Up to Date

Getting the latest iOS Safari version is as easy as updating your iPhone to the latest version of iOS. If you set your iPhone to install updates automatically, the phone notifies you when an update is ready and prompts you to install it. Otherwise, open the iPhone's Settings app, tap "General" and then select "Software Update." If you see a "Download and Install" button, tap it to start updating your phone's version of iOS.

If you prefer to use a computer and iTunes for the update process, use your iPhone's USB cable to connect the phone to your computer. After you launch iTunes, click the phone's name under "Devices" in the left pane and then click "Check for Update" in the right pane. If there's an update, iTunes prompts you to download and install it.

Step 3: Select the About Opera option on the following roll-out menu to get the version number.

Step 1: Click Safari located on the menu bar, as shown above.

Step 2: Select the About Safari option on the drop-down menu. The number appears in a small pop-up window.

You won’t find a browser version for Safari on mobile. Instead, the number matches the current build of iOS and TabletOS. You’ll find that information located under Settings > General > About .

Step 1: Tap the three-dot icon located in the bottom right corner. If you don’t see it, scroll the current page until the toolbar appears.

Step 2: Tap the Settings option on the pop-up menu.

Step 3: Scroll down and tap Google Chrome . The version number appears in small print on the following screen.

Step 1: Tap the three-dot icon located in the top right corner.

Step 2: Tap the Settings option on the drop-down menu.

Step 3: Scroll down and tap About Chrome . The version number appears on the following screen.

Unlike Chrome, the method is mostly identical for Microsoft Edge on iOS and Android . The only notable difference is noted in Step 3 for Android.

Step 1: Tap the three-dot icon located at the bottom.

Step 3: Scroll down on the following screen to get the version number. On Android, you’ll need to take an additional step and tap About This App at the bottom to get the number.

Like Chrome, there are enough differences between Firefox for iOS and Android that we need two instruction sets.

Step 1: Tap the three-line “hamburger” icon located in the bottom right corner.

Step 3: Scroll down on the following screen to get the version number, listed under About .

Step 3: Scroll down to the bottom on the following screen and tap Mozilla Firefox .

Step 4: Tap About Firefox on the following screen to get the version number.

Despite a slight difference in their presentation, Opera for iOS and Android provide similar methods to acquire the version number. The screenshot above is based on the iOS version.

Step 1: Tap the “O” icon in the bottom right corner. On Android, the “O” icon is red.

Step 2: Tap the Settings  option on the pop-up menu.

Step 3: Scroll down on the following screen to get the version number. On Android, you’ll need to take an additional step and tap About Opera at the bottom.

As part of a deal to be the default search engine on Apple devices, Google pays the tech giant 36% of the revenue earned via search ad activity on Apple's Safari browser.

It’s extremely rare for information of this nature to be made public. In this case, it was released during Google’s defense at the Justice Department's antitrust trial in Washington, D.C.

If you use Google Chrome and are sick of managing an unruly mass of tabs in your web browser, help may soon be at hand. That’s because Google is testing a new feature that could bring order to your tab chaos.

As spotted by Leopeva64 on X (formerly Twitter), a new edition of Google Chrome Canary (a version of Chrome that lets users test out experimental features) contains a new tool called Organize Tabs nestled in the top-left corner of the browser.

Microsoft makes it easy to change the default browser in Windows 11. That's important if you require special features specific to one of the many web browsers that are available on a PC. Unfortunately, it's not as simple to be rid of Edge entirely.

Microsoft Edge will still load to open some other file types. When opening a link from Windows Settings or other system components, the webpage will load in Edge. That's now about to change, however, according to a recent Windows blog post.

how to check safari browser

Apple Safari is a widely used web browser that is available for both macOS and iOS platforms. Like all other software, Apple Safari releases updates with new features, performance improvements, and bug fixes. Therefore, it is essential to check the version number of Safari installed on your device to ensure that you have the latest version available.

Here’s how you can check the version number of Apple Safari browser:

Step 1: Open Safari on your device.

Step 2: Click on the “Safari” menu option located in the top left corner of the screen.

Step 3: From the drop-down menu, select “About Safari.”

Step 4: A pop-up window will appear on the screen containing information about the version number of Safari installed on your device, as well as the version of WebKit, which is the browser engine that powers Safari.

Step 5: The version number of Safari will be listed next to the “Safari” label. For instance, Safari 15.0.2 is the latest version in December 2021.

Step 6: If there is an update available, the pop-up window will contain a button labeled “Update.” Click on this button to begin the update process. If you do not see this button, it means that you have the latest version of Safari installed on your device.

In addition to checking the version number, you can also set up automatic updates for Safari on your device. This will ensure that you always have the latest version of Safari installed without having to manually check for updates.

To enable automatic updates on macOS, follow these steps:

Step 1: Open the “App Store” on your device.

Step 2: Click on the “Preferences” option in the “App Store” menu.

Step 3: Check the box next to “Automatically check for updates.”

Step 4: Now, whenever an update is available, the “App Store” will download and install it automatically on your device.

To enable automatic updates on iOS, follow these steps:

Step 1: Open the “Settings” app on your iOS device.

Step 2: Click on the “iTunes & App Store” option.

Step 3: Check the box next to “Updates” under the “Automatic Downloads” section.

Step 4: Now, whenever an update is available, it will be downloaded and installed automatically on your iOS device.

In conclusion, checking the version number of Apple Safari browser is crucial to ensure that you have the latest version installed on your device. By following these simple steps, you can verify the version number of Safari and set up automatic updates to ensure that you always have the latest version installed.

The browser on which the current page is opening can be checked using JavaScript.

The userAgent property of the navigator object is used to return the user-agent header string sent by the browser. This user-agent string contains information about the browser by including certain keywords that may be tested for their presence.

The presence of a specific user-string can be detected using the indexOf() method. The indexOf() method is used to return the first occurrence of the specified string value in a string. If the value does not come up in the string, “-1” is returned.

The user-agent string of the browser is accessed using the navigator.userAgent property and then stored in a variable. The presence of the strings of a browser in this user-agent string is detected one by one.

As the indexOf() method would return a value that is greater than “-1” to denote a successful search, the “greater-than” operator is used to return a boolean value on whether the search was successful or not. This is done for all the following tests.

One additional check is required in the case of the Safari browser as the user-agent of the Chrome browser also includes the Safari browser’s user-agent. If both the user-agents of Chrome and Safari are in the user-agent, it means that the browser is Chrome, and hence the Safari browser value is discarded.

One additional check is also required in the case of this browser as the user-agent of the Opera browser also includes the Chrome browser’s user-agent. If both the user-agents of Chrome and Opera are in the user-agent, it means that the browser is Opera, and hence the Chrome browser value is discarded.

How to view a saved password in safari on iphone and ipad.

If you've forgotten a website password but have saved it before using Safari on your iPhone or iPad, you can easily retrieve it. Here's how.

It can be frustrating when you need to log into a site on a different device or browser but you’ve lost the password. Luckily, if you've previously stored that password using Safari on iPhone or iPad , you can easily retrieve it. Here’s how.

First, launch "Settings," which can usually be found on the first page of your Home screen or on your Dock.

Scroll down the list of Settings options until you see "Passwords & Accounts." Tap it.

In the "Passwords & Accounts" section, tap "Website & App Passwords."

After you pass authentication (using Touch ID, Face ID, or your passcode), you will see a list of saved account information organized alphabetically by website name. Scroll through or use the search bar until you find the entry with the password you need. Tap it.

On the next screen, you will see account info in detail, including the username and the password.

If possible, memorize the password quickly and try to avoid writing it down on paper. If you often have trouble managing passwords, it's better to use a password manager instead .

The current ‌Safari Technology Preview‌ release is compatible with machines running macOS Ventura and macOS Sonoma , the latest version of macOS that Apple released in September 2023.

The ‌Safari Technology Preview‌ update is available through the Software Update mechanism in System Preferences or System Settings to anyone who has downloaded the browser . Full release notes for the update are available on the Safari Technology Preview website .

Apple's aim with ‌Safari Technology Preview‌ is to gather feedback from developers and users on its browser development process. ‌Safari Technology Preview‌ can run side-by-side with the existing Safari browser and while designed for developers, it does not require a developer account to download.

I'm always curious about these Safari Tech Preview posts. Are they just a quick way to add another headline? I suspect so, as I don't see many people trusting these builds as their daily driver. I've tried that in the past, but it never stuck.

Why Is Safari So Slow on iPhone & iPad

What to know.

  • Why is Safari so slow lately? You may have a weak cellular or Wi-Fi signal or too many tabs open.
  • If Safari is slow still, open the Safari app, touch and hold the tabs icon, and tap Close All (#) Tabs.
  • You can also open Settings, tap General, Transfer or Reset iPhone, Reset, Reset Network Settings.

how to check safari browser

Why is Safari so slow on my iPhone? If Safari is slow to load, you may have too many tabs open or not enough iPad or iPhone storage available. There are a few other ways to fix Safari acting slow, too. Read on to find out!

Check Your Internet Speed

Close all safari tabs, clear browsing history and data, check iphone or ipad storage, reset network settings.

You need a strong Wi-Fi or cellular connection on your iPhone or iPad, or Safari will run slowly. To check your Wi-Fi or cellular connection, look at the symbols at the top-right of your screen.

check wifi and cellular signal if safari slow

The four vertical bars represent your iPhone's cellular connection. The more bars are white, the stronger the connection. If only one or no bars are white, Safari will run extremely slowly or not at all. You may also see 5G, 4G, or 3G, depending on your iPhone model, and whether or not your cellular carrier offers those speeds. If you're relying on your cellular connection alone for your internet connection, Safari may still be slow if the network is congested or you've used or almost used up your data for the month.

iPhone Life

The pie slice-shaped icon to the right of the cellular connection bars represents your iPhone's Wi-Fi signal. The more white bars you see, the stronger your connection. If you aren't connected to a Wi-Fi network or are out of range of the network you are connected to, you'll see LTE instead. This means that your iPhone is relying on its cellular connection to browse the web.

If you think there's a problem with your cellular connection, we have a troubleshooting article on what to do if your data is not working on your iPhone or iPad. We also have an article about how to fix it if your Wi-Fi is slow .

If Safari is running slowly, it may be because you have too many tabs open. Close all Safari tabs and see if Safari speeds up! If you regularly leave multiple tabs open, you can set Safari tabs to close automatically on a regular schedule.

Safari slow to load still? Try the next step.

Safari acting slow still? It's time to clear the browsing history and data on your iPhone or iPad. We can also offer guidance if you  can't clear your Safari browsing data .

why safari so slow clear browsing history and data

Safari browser slow still? Read on!

If Safari is slow after the previous steps, check your iPad or iPhone storage and optimize storage if needed. There's no hard and fast rule for how much storage should be free, but I've found that keeping roughly 25% of my storage free keeps things running quickly and smoothly.

Safari loading slowly still? There's one more thing to try!

There's one more thing to try if you want to make Safari run faster: reset your network settings.

I hope these tips helped Safari run faster on your iPhone or iPad. If not, please contact Apple Support . Also, be sure to check out our free Tip of the Day for more great Safari tutorials!

  • What if Safari is not working on my iPhone at all? If Safari isn't working on your iPhone or iPad, make sure you have a strong cellular or Wi-Fi connection. You can also check to see if you've set Screen Time limits for Safari, and clear your Safari history and browsing data.
  • Can you tell me what to do when Safari says Safari cannot open the page? Yes, we can help you fix that! We have a troubleshooting article on how to fix the "Safari cannot open the page"  error message. Solutions include removing extensions, clearing your Safari cache, and more.
  • Why is my Google search not working? If you're having trouble with Google not showing search results , close and reopen the app, and make sure you have a strong Wi-Fi or cellular connection. You can also make sure the app is updated, reboot your iPhone, and more.

How to clear the cache on your iPhone (and why you should)

How many tabs are open on your mobile browser right now? Go ahead, check -- you might be surprised by what you find.

Americans spend over five hours a day on their smartphones. That's over five hours of your phone potentially accessing, retrieving, and saving cache and cookies, which can negatively impact your iPhone's storage space .

What is cache?

Cache is the temporary storage of some data, like parts of a website from the last time you visited it, for example. Browser cache is content from a website that is stored on your phone during a browser session to help the browser execute faster the next time you visit that page.

Also:  How to clear Google search cache on Android

Cache data can slow down your phone's overall browsing performance, however, since it takes up storage space on your device, so it's good to clear it out regularly. In this article, we mainly focus on clearing web browser cache on an iPhone, but you should know that other types of cache include mobile app cache and CPU cache.

How to clear cache on iPhone

What you'll need: Everything you need to clear your browser cache is within the iPhone's settings app or the Safari app, so grab your iPhone to get started.

Keep in mind that clearing the cache can clear private data, which can close all open tabs in Safari. This is also likely to log you out of all your websites, prompting you to sign in again the next time you open them.

How do I clear the cache from Chrome on iPhone?

If Google Chrome is your preferred browser, it may have a substantial amount of data stored on your device, which could also slow down performance.

To clear the cache in Chrome, open the Google Chrome app and follow these steps:

  • Tap  Settings .
  • Go to  Privacy and Security .
  • Select  Clear Browsing Data .
  • Select the time from which to delete the data (if you want to delete all your browsing history, choose All Time ).
  • Go through the items you'd like to delete, like your Browsing History, Cookies and Site Data, Cached Images and Files, Saved Passwords , and Autofill Data.
  • Confirm by tapping  Clear Browsing Data  at the bottom of the screen.
  • Tap Done when you've deleted the Chrome cache.

Also: Apple releases iOS 17.4 with podcast transcripts, new emojis, and EU app store changes

Clearing the browsing and cache data in Google Chrome doesn't close all open tabs, but it will refresh each tab and log you out of websites. Once you tap on one of the tabs you want to access, you'll have to log back in.

How can I browse on Safari without history?

If you're learning how to clear cache on an iPhone, you may also be wondering if there's a way to use Safari without saving any browsing history. You can turn on Private Browsing by following these steps:

  • Open  Safari .
  • Tap on  Tabs .
  • Choose Private .

You can also enable private browsing by going to your iPhone Settings, finding Safari, and toggling on the private option.

How do I clear my app cache on my iPhone?

To clear the app cache from your iPhone Settings app, you can either delete the app and reinstall it, offload it, or try to clear the cache from within the app. Unfortunately, iOS apps don't have consistent settings across the board that would allow you to clear the cache of every app.

Also: Apple warns: Don't put your wet iPhone in rice. Do this instead

Apps like TikTok and CapCut, for example, have options to Clear Cache within their respective settings. Amazon lets users delete their browsing history, while the Reddit app can clear local history. It all depends on what the app's settings let you do.

Is "clear cache" the same as offloading?

Not exactly, though app offloading can help if your phone is slowed down by low storage. To offload an app  means to uninstall an app without deleting any documents or data associated with it.

Also: Apple secures iMessage against threats from the future

To offload an app, go to  Settings , then  General , choose  iPhone Storage  and select the app to offload, then tap  Offload App . If you ever download it again, you'll pick up where you left off for that app.

Are cookies and cache the same thing?

Cookies and cache are not the same. Cookies are data files that websites send to your phone, including things like saved passwords to keep you logged into an account or even the website preferences from the previous time you visited.

Also: I tested the best Mint alternatives, and this is my new favorite money app

Though they do sound harmless, cookies can also track how you browse the internet. They monitor patterns in your browsing and search history, even seeing what you clicked on or what your mouse hovered over. Ever made an innocuous search on Amazon only to find ads for it on all the apps you use? Cookies likely made that possible.

Can I block cookies on my iPhone?

While you can block cookies on Safari, the ranks are divided on whether you should. Blocking cookies entirely means that websites won't be able to get information from you, but it also means that some websites may not even work correctly on your browser. A lot of users actually enjoy a more personalized browsing experience, so cookies are a good thing for them.

If you'd like to block cookies in Safari, follow these steps:

  • Go to  Settings  and select  Safari .
  • Tap on the toggle next to  Block All Cookies .

There are also third-party extensions that help you block cookies and trackers in Google Chrome, like Ghostery and Disconnect .

How do I check iPhone storage?

On an iPhone, Settings can show you what's taking up most of your media storage, like photos, videos, and music. You can also see what each particular app's storage consumption is, which includes temporary data. To view the details of your iPhone's storage space, follow these steps:

  • Go to the iPhone Settings .
  • Tap on General .
  • Select iPhone Storage .
  • Scroll through to find the app you're looking for.
  • Tap on the app to view storage status and options.

Unfortunately, you can't clear your iPhone cache for third-party apps by going into your Settings app, but this gives you a visual of your iPhone's storage and the option to delete or offload apps.

Also: Here's the fastest way to declutter your iPhone and free up Gigabytes of space

When you look at your device's storage space, you'll probably see recommended steps you can take to optimize your iPhone's storage, like offloading unused apps.
