THE BEST SEASON FOR AN IRAN DESERT TOUR

The best season for nearly all Iran Desert tours and safaris is October , November , December , and March . The heat of the desert in summer is obviously intolerable and it is very cold and dry in winter. Yet, depending on your tour type and the desert you choose, you can have a desert tour almost all year round. Meaning that even in summer or winter, a short walk in the evening and enjoying the sunset is doable! Find out more practical tips about a desert trip in Iran here .

IRAN’S TOP DESERT TOUR DESTINATIONS

Being home to 2 main deserts, The Central Desert (Dasht-e Kavir) and Lut Desert (UNESCO), Iran offers access to charming deserts from its main tourist cities. You can hop aboard an Iran desert tour from Isfahan , Yazd and Kerman .

Shahdad Desert: from Kerman

In Lut Desert, 150 kilometers to the city of Kerman , Shahdad Desert will fascinate you with its rare beauty. It is the place to wonder at the variety of unique phenomena that make Lut a precious UNESCO Natural World Heritage. World-famous Kaluts (Yardangs or sandy ridges) that together look like a sandy city, are of the most fascinating charms of this Iran desert . In recent years, Shahdad also blesses tourists with an unexpected surprise: a lovely lake that hosts migratory birds.

Gandom Beryan Desert: from Kerman

Gandom Beryan Desert is a unique place to the north of the Kaluts of Shahdad. This stunning piece of Lut Desert has black stones scattered all over it. These volcanic stones have created a scorching area that looks very much like planet Mars. This unique piece of our planet reaches up to 71° centigrade in summer. So, no living being can survive there.

Varzaneh Desert: from Isfahan

Isfahan ’s Varzaneh Desert features a lovely salt lake and handsome sand dunes. As home to the largest desert recreation center in Iran, Vaheh Eco Camp (120 km to the east of Isfahan), this desert is the place to enjoy a range of facilities like desert safari, zipline, 4WD motorcycles, camels, paraglider, etc.

Fahraj and Shabahang Deserts: from Yazd

Yazd , the most attractive desert city of Iran, has 2 sandy magnets nearby (30-40 km from Yazd): Fahraj Desert and Shabahang Desert. The sandy hills and desert entertainments make these two deserts very popular. Camel riding, 4W motorcycling, and desert safari are of the delights of adventures in Fahraj and Shabahang.

Where will I stay during my Iran Desert Tour?

You can experience a variety of accommodations on your Iran desert safari, from eco-camps, guesthouses, boutique hotels, caravanserais, and tents.

Can I go off-roading in Iran?

Absolutely! Whether with short off-roads or multi-day adventures to the depth of desert, the desert is yours to discover. Camel riding, motorcycling, and sand-skiing are also among the exciting experiences on your off-roading adventure.

Anyone enchanted by the desert’s charm, will not be released until the end of his life.

This famous phrase was uttered by Dr. Alfons Gabrie l – a late Austrian geographer and traveler. He had made numerous trips to Iran deserts and his most famous travelogue, “ Crossing the Deserts of Iran ” has been recently published. In Iran, there are different deserts, most of which are located in the center of the country. What do you know about Iran desert tours ? which deserts are suitable for tourism?

The desert ,  Sahara ,  Kavir  or  Kalout are scientifically different, and their differentiations depend on altitude, annual precipitation, the type of vegetation, amount of salt present in the soil and natural formations. In Iran, there are all types of deserts whose sand dunes, salt rivers, salt lakes, desert plants, birds and wildlife, attract thousands of tourists depending on the regional and climatic conditions.

Camels-in-Desert

The well-known desert areas of Iran are divided in two main regions; both are among the hottest in the world:

Dasht-e Kavir Desert Lut Desert

These two vast deserts consist of sub-regional deserts that have recently become popular tourist destinations. Desert lovers usually head to these areas in spring, fall and winter seasons.

Mesr Desert

One of the most popular deserts in Iran is  Mesr desert of Isfahan province, which is also called the Sand Sea and is 700 km away from Tehran. Maranjab Desert

Maranjab desert is located on the outskirts of Aran & Bidgol town in Isfahan province and is one of the most popular attractions in Kashan. This is the most visited desert in Iran due to its beautiful night sky, high sand dunes, rich vegetation and fauna. Attractions of this desert include walking on the sands, visiting the historical well of Dastkan and Shah Abbasi caravanserai, a visit to the salt lake, off-roading, and so on.

You can camp in this desert or stay at Shah Abbasi caravanserai and spend the night in the heart of a mesmerizing desert.

Rig-e Jenn Desert

Rig-e Jenn (also Rig-e Jinn ) is one of the spooky and mysterious deserts of Iran, which is located in the south of Semnan , southeast of Garmsar , west of Jandagh , north of Anarak and east of the Kavir national reserves.

It is interesting to know that many stories and legends about this desert have spread among the locals, all of which have been very effective in making it so popular.

If you wish to explore the deserts in Iran, you must visit The Shahdad Desert. Located in Shahdad a city in Kerman province of Iran, the Shahdad Desert is a part of the Lut Desert. It is registered as the hottest place on earth. The temperature at Shahdad Desert at times rises to 70 ˚C that makes it even hotter than the Death Valley in California.

The Kaluts in the Shahdad Desert, which are monumental sand structures that have been naturally created throughout the years, are registered by the UNESCO as the geographical heritage of this region. While the formation of them is still a mystery to the experts, it is clear that they have been naturally created through the erosion of water and sand.

Upon seeing them for the first time, the Kaluts appear to one as the remaining walls of monumental structures that were ruined in the course of history. That is why some local residents call these Kaluts “Ghost Towns

Iran desert tour

The Shahdad Desert is where multiple civilizations, some dating back to 5 thousand years ago, and multiple historical artifacts have been discovered in this place. One of the most important items that has been discovered in this area is Derafsh Shahdad (Shahdad Flag) which is the earliest flag discovered. It is made of bronze and because of oxidation has turned into green.

One of the most important features of this flag is the Simorgh (Mythical Persian Bird) that is carved on the flag. The ancient residents of the Shahdad Desert believed that Simorgh brought about the mythical wind that was sent from gods in the heaven. The recent changes in the climate and heavy rains have given birth to a one-of-a-kind natural phenomenon in Shahdad Desert which is the emergence of Shahdad Lake.Throughout the day, you can jump on a boat and travel the lake.

To see a lake appear in the middle of a desert almost over a night seems more like a miracle than a natural occurrence. The blue and salty lake creates a divine image within the desert that only increases in beauty at night when the night sky sees its reflection in the lake water.

One of the best experiences of going on a camping trip in the Shahdad Desert is that one can see the clear night sky and the beautiful stars that can never be seen in the city because of the city lights. What can be a more divine experience than to fall to sleep next to Shahdad Lake while hearing the melody of the winds and the steady waves and looking at the divine image of the entire Milky Way right in front of your eyes?

Iran desert tour

What makes spending the night in Shahdad Kalut a worthwhile experience is watching the shooting stars. Rarely ever can you spot shooting stars in the night sky of the city, but at Shahdad Desert, you can see an abundance of them, it is almost as if they are celebrating the visit of the new comers in the desert and wish to welcome them with an entertaining performance.

The locals have this famous saying that “at nights in the desert, the sky reaches the earth”.

If you are interested in exploring rare phenomena within the natural landscape and just would not mind getting hot a little, do not miss out the chance of exploring the wonders of Shahdad Desert for yourself.

Another popular destination for desert tours in Iran is Karakal Desert in Yazd. Karakal Desert or Bafgh Desert is located at the center of Iran. Since it is located near Sadegh Abad Village, it is at times called the Sadegh Abad Desert as well.

The desert takes its name from a cat named Caracal for which the desert is the natural habitat. Because of its high wit and predatory nature, the locals used this cat to haunt other animals for them. The desert is mainly stripped of any plantation; however at some locations of it palm trees can be observed.

If you are willing to create an adventurous desert tour for yourself, make sure to visit Karakal Desert. Since the desert welcomes hundreds of visitors from different corners of the world each year, multiple activities have been designed for the visitors to enjoy themselves while being out in the desert.

bafgh

You can enjoy a camel ride on the desert or jump in a safari and enjoy the vast golden brown landscape. It is believed by the locals that the hot sand has a healing effect. That is why some people take a “hot sand bath” in the desert. They lie on the ground and pour sand on themselves from the neck to the toes and just lie there for a couple of minutes or for as long as they can handle the hot sand and the sun shining above their heads.

This is one of the most enliven experiences of the desert. The most common and popular activity in the desert is taking a walk. The experience of the hot sand beneath your feet and the soft ground that make it harder and harder for one to take one step after another is the true nature of a desert tour. You want to explore the desert all by yourself!

Of course it does not mean that you should go there alone. It is extremely easy to get lost in the desert since all the surrounding area looks the same. Therefore, make sure to always bring some locals with you on your journey who can guide you through the desert, and who can help you find your way back

Going on a desert tour might scare you at first since you may wonder that you do not have the experience or the necessary tools to survive in the desert for a couple of days. But you need not to worry since all of the required accommodations have been provided for you in these two deserts, and experienced tour leaders shall accompany you at every step of the way. Therefore, do not hesitate to book a desert tour next time you visit Iran.

It is possible to check out the other marvelous Iran tour package.

Why is Iran’s President Ebrahim Raisi visiting Pakistan?

Raisi is set to hold talks with top Pakistani leaders as the two nations aim to boost trade and resolve border issues.

In this photo released by Prime Minister Office, Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi, left, walks with Pakistan's Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif during a welcome ceremony in the prime minister house in Islamabad, Pakistan.

Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi is in Pakistan on a three-day trip to discuss regional and bilateral relations days after Iran and Israel carried out attacks against each other, risking the Gaza war to expand into a regional conflict.

Raisi is scheduled to hold talks with top Pakistani leadership, including Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif , as the two neighbours seek to mend ties after tit-for-tat missile attacks in January.

Pakistan attacks ‘terrorist hideouts’ in iran, iran’s surprise ‘unprecedented heat’ shutdown raises questions, will israel respond to iran’s first-ever direct attack, what are the implications of iran’s missile attack on israel.

Local media reported that Raisi will also meet General Asim Munir , the head of Pakistan’s military, which wields huge political and economic influence in the South Asian nation.

What’s the agenda of the trip?

Raisi arrived in the capital, Islamabad, on Monday as the two neighbours aim to boost economic, border and energy ties.

“The Islamic Republic of Iran, in line with the neighbourhood policy … is interested in promoting relations with Pakistan and during this trip, various issues including economic and commercial issues, energy and border issues will be discussed with the government of Pakistan,” a statement by the Iranian presidential office said on Monday.

In a statement issued on Sunday, Pakistan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs called for improving bilateral ties.

“The two sides will have a wide-ranging agenda to further strengthen Pakistan-Iran ties and enhance cooperation in diverse fields including trade, connectivity, energy, agriculture, and people-to-people contacts,” the statement said.

The Iranian president will visit major cities, including Lahore and Karachi, and focus on bilateral and trade ties, it said.

Mosharraf Zaidi, a partner at advisory services firm Tabadlab and former adviser to the Foreign Ministry, told Al Jazeera in a written statement that Raisi’s trip is “an effort to secure an expression of support from Islamabad and Rawalpindi [military leadership] for Iran – as it stumbles deeper into a dangerous conflict with Israel”.

Zaidi added that Iran’s strategic thinkers are aware that Pakistan has both a domestic political crisis and a growing range of economic compulsions that limit the range of movement on Pakistan’s engagement in the ongoing conflict in the Middle East.

What’s the status of Iran-Pakistan ties?

Iran and Pakistan have a history of a troubled relationship, with both accusing each other of failing to rein in armed groups.

The border tensions escalated in January when Iran carried out air attacks across the border in Pakistan killing two children. The Iranian state media said the attack was targeting two bases of the armed group Jaish al-Adl . Pakistan retaliated by firing a missile into Iranian territory and recalling its ambassador from Tehran.

But the two neighbours decided to de-escalate tensions, with Tehran rushing its top diplomat to Islamabad to mend ties. The two countries agreed to confront the “menace of terrorism” together, especially in the border region. Before Raisi’s visit, Tehran and Islamabad talked about combating “terrorism”.

“At that time, Pakistan had a caretaker government in place. So what Iranians had indicated was that after the new government comes in, there could be a visit to repair the relationship and rebuild confidence,” Muhammad Faisal, a PhD Scholar at the University of Technology Sydney who specialises in Pakistan’s foreign policy, said.

Why is the Pakistan-Iran relationship vital?

Foreign policy analysts in Pakistan have backed re-engagement with Iran despite the border tensions.

“Pakistan has troubled borders with India as well as with Afghanistan. And therefore, to have a normal, stable relationship with Iran has been of utmost importance for Pakistan, and it remains so,” veteran Pakistani diplomat Maleeha Lodhi told Al Jazeera in the wake of the January border tensions.

Islamabad and Tehran have been aiming to boost bilateral trade, which currently stands at more than $2bn.

Faisal told Al Jazeera that there is a sizable informal trade between the two countries, including liquified petroleum gas (LPG) and crude oil. He added that Iran also provides electricity to Balochistan province and other border areas in Pakistan.

In May 2023, Sharif and Raisi inaugurated the first border market at the Mand-Pishin border crossing.

Moreover, the two neighbours have close cultural and religious ties, with tens of thousands of Shia minority people from Pakistan going to Iran every year on pilgrimage.

However, Tabadlab’s Zaidi said common cultural bonds and a long border – 900km (559 miles) – have not translated into people-to-people exchanges and deep trade ties.

“Instead, trade is mostly outside the formal domain and travel is restricted to religious tourism,” he said.

On the eve of his trip, the Iranian president set a target of $10bn in bilateral trade, saying the level of economic relations between the two countries is not equal to the level of political relations. Last August, they had set the bilateral trade target at $5bn.

A plan to build a pipeline to export Iranian natural gas to Pakistan has been stalled amid opposition from the United States, which has slapped a wide range of sanctions on Tehran over its nuclear programme.

Faisal, from the University of Technology Sydney, said the Pakistan-Iran gas pipeline might be discussed during the talks.

How has Pakistan responded to Iran-Israel tensions?

On April 14, a day after Iran’s strikes on Israel, Pakistan’s Foreign Ministry issued a statement calling for de-escalation . The statement deemed the events “the consequences of the breakdown of diplomacy”.

“These also underline the ‘grave’ implications in cases where the UN Security Council is unable to fulfil its responsibilities of maintaining international peace and security,” the ministry statement said.

It further said Pakistan underlined the necessity of international efforts to prevent further hostilities in the region and for a ceasefire in Gaza.

“It’s now critically urgent to stabilise the situation and restore peace. We call on all parties to exercise utmost restraint,” the statement concluded.

Pakistan does not recognise Israel and does not have direct channels of communication with it.

“In recent years, there has been growing conjecture about pressure from GCC [Gulf Cooperation Council] countries on Pakistan to make changes to its Palestine policy. There is no indication that such a change is on the cards,” Zaidi said.

Iran, pakistan agree to ‘expeditiously finalise’ free trade agreement: joint statement.

iran desert tour

Tehran and Islamabad agreed to “expeditiously finalise” a Free Trade Agreement (FTA), a joint statement said on Wednesday as Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi concluded his three-day official visit to Pakistan.

According to a joint statement issued by Iran and Pakistan, “both sides agreed to expeditiously finalise the FTA and hold the next sessions of annual Bilateral Political Consultations (BPC) and Joint Business Trade Committee (JBTC) as well as the 22nd round of the negotiations of the Joint Economic Commission (JEC) in the near future”.

Last month, Iranian Ambassador Dr Reza Amiri Moghadam had said the FTA would increase mutual trade, highlighting the need to have strong air, maritime and sea links.

The joint statement recalled the exchanges and meetings during Raisi’s visit to Pakistan, saying that both sides “reviewed the entire spectrum of Pakistan-Iran bilateral relations”.

Both neighbours also agreed to “enhance mutual interaction through regular exchange of high-level visits”, it added.

Pakistan and Iran also agreed to facilitate a regular exchange of economic and technical experts, as well as delegations from Chambers of Commerce from both countries to intensify economic cooperation.

The declaration of the Reemdan border point as an international border crossing point under the TIR Convention and the opening of the remaining two border sustenance markets was also agreed upon, the statement said.

It added that both countries “affirmed their commitment to transform their common border from ‘border of peace’ to a ‘border of prosperity’ through joint development-oriented economic projects, including setting up of joint border markets, economic free zones, and new border openings”.

“They also reiterated the importance of cooperation in the energy domain, including trade in electricity, power transmission lines and Iran-Pakistan Gas Pipeline Project ,” the statement said, recalling their aim to increase bilateral trade volume to $10 billion dollars over the next five years.

“There was consensus to fully operationalise barter trade mechanisms between the two sides to facilitate economic and commercial activity,” the countries said.

Iran and Pakistan “expressed satisfaction at the close and cooperative relations between the two countries in all mechanisms” of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO), underscoring the importance of early resumption of the activities of the SCO-Afghanistan Contact Group.

The two sides also called for active cooperation among the regional countries within the framework of the Economic Cooperation Organisation (ECO).

According to the statement, Raisi also extended cordial invitations to President Zardari and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif to pay official visits to Iran.

Anti-terrorism cooperation, foreign relations

Iran and Pakistan also agreed on a number of steps aimed at combating terrorism, according to the joint statement.

Recognising that terrorism “posed a common threat to regional peace and stability and presented a major impediment to the development of the region”, the neighbours agreed to “adopt a collaborative approach to confront this menace […] while fully upholding the principles of the UN Charter”.

“Both sides reaffirmed their commitment to the development of Afghanistan as a peaceful, united, sovereign and independent state, free from the threats of terrorism and drug trafficking,” the statement said, adding that the two countries reaffirmed their willingness to “enhance cooperation on counter-terrorism and security and to develop a united front against terrorism”.

Noting the relevance of coordinating regional and international efforts to ensure security and stability in the region, Pakistan and Iran “recognised that increasing participation of all strata of Afghans in basic decision-making will lead to the strengthening of peace and stability in this country”.

The statement further said that both sides “stressed the importance of peaceful settlement of disputes through dialogue and diplomacy”.

The neighbours also expressed their agreement to “release each other’s prisoners and take measures for their extradition based on the Treaty for the Extradition of Criminals and the Accused signed in 1960 and the Agreement on the Transfer of Convicts approved in 2016.

Iran and Pakistan also condemned “ rising incidents of Islamophobia, desecration of the Holy Quran and sacred symbols in some countries”. They welcomed the adoption of the United Nations General Assembly resolution titled “Measures to Combat Islamophobia” in March.

On the Gaza conflict, Pakistan and Iran “expressed their strong and unequivocal condemnation of the ongoing Israeli regime’s aggression and atrocities against the Palestinian people”. They called for an immediate and unconditional ceasefire in Gaza, as well as “ensuring accountability of the crimes being committed by the Israeli regime”.

The two sides “strongly condemned the attack on the consular section” of the Iranian Embassy in Syria’s Damascus, calling it a “violation of international law and the UN Charter”.

“Recognising that the irresponsible act of the Israeli regime forces was a major escalation in an already volatile region, both sides called on the UN Security Council to prevent Israeli regime from its adventurism in the region and its illegal acts attacking its neighbours and targeting foreign diplomatic facilities,” the statement added.

Both neighbours also highlighted the need to resolve the issue of India-occupied Kashmir through “dialogue and peaceful means based on the will of the people of that region and in accordance with international law”, it further said.

Raisi wraps up visit

Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi concludes his three-day official visit to Pakistan at the Karachi airport on Wednesday. — Foreign Office

Earlier on Wednesday morning, Raisi concluded his three-day official visit to Pakistan, during which he visited Islamabad, Karachi and Lahore.

Sindh Governor Kamran Tessori, Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah and Housing Minister Riaz Hussain Pirzada saw off the Iranian president and his delegation at Karachi’s Jinnah International Airport, Radio Pakistan reported .

According to Iran’s news agency IRNA , Raisi left for Sri Lanka’s Colombo on the next leg of his South Asia tour at the invitation of his counterpart Ranil Wickremesinghe. However, Radio Pakistan said that he had left for Iran.

In a statement, the Foreign Office (FO) said Raisi “concluded his maiden visit to Pakistan”.

It said that during his visit, the “two sides held productive discussions and agreed to advance bilateral cooperation in multiple domains, including in trade, connectivity, energy and people-to-people contacts”.

Lahore, Karachi visits on 2nd day

On Tuesday — the second day of his visit — Raisi had visited Lahore and Karachi, with both cities observing local holidays, which were announced to “avoid the consequent inconvenience to the general public”. The Sindh government has also imposed a complete ban on drones in the Karachi division from April 22 to April 28.

The Iranian president had first landed in Lahore , where he met Punjab CM Maryam Nawaz and Governor Balighur Rehman.

Raisi and Maryam had reaffirmed their commitment to enhancing cultural exchanges and fostering people-to-people contacts while Governor Rehman had hosted a luncheon in honour of the president and his delegation.

The Iranian president had also paid a visit to Allama Iqbal’s mausoleum, where he highlighted a “special connection” with Pakistani people and said he did not “feel like a stranger at all” in the country.

Later in the day, Raisi had arrived in Karachi, where he met with CM Murad to discuss Pak-Iran economic opportunities and also held a meeting with Governor Tessori.

During his Karachi visit, Raisi had said Tehran was ready to exchange its prowess in industry, science, and technology with Pakistan. He also expressed his resolve to remove trade barriers between Pakistan and Iran.

Ahead of his visit, the Sindh government had closed all major road links, suspended cellular services in many city districts, and deployed heavy police and Rangers contingents all across the metropolis.

The closure of many important roads in Karachi — including Sharea Faisal, Shahrah-i-Quaideen and M.A. Jinnah Road — even before the time of closure announced by the traffic police had caused inconvenience and hardship to motorists and commuters.

Separately, amid Raisi’s visit to Pakistan, the US State Department had warned that anyone considering business deals with Iran should be aware of the potential risks of US sanctions, as Washington “forbids’ commercial ties with Tehran.

“Let me say broadly we advise anyone considering business deals with Iran to be aware of the potential risk of sanctions,” said the department’s Principal Deputy Spokesperson Vedant Patel, when asked about efforts to expand trade ties between Pakistan and Iran.

“But ultimately, the government of Pakistan can speak to their own foreign policy pursuits,” the US official added.

High-level meetings on 1st day

On Monday, Raisi had spent a busy day in Islamabad, where the two sides committed to increasing the trade volume to $10 billion over the next five years.

After his arrival in the capital, he had met with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and later addressed a joint press conference, vowing to strengthen relations between both countries at “high levels”.

Later, Raisi also met with President Asif Ali Zardari where they agreed to reinforce existing ties. In his meeting with Chief of Army Staff General Asim Munir, the Iranian president discussed regional stability and border security.

Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar had called on Raisi as well while Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi and his Iranian counterpart Dr Ahmad Vahidi agreed on both two countries banning terrorist organisations in their respective countries.

Separately, the neighbours signed eight agreements and Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) for cooperation in various fields. PM Shehbaz and Raisi also inaugurated the newly constructed portion of Islamabad’s 11th Avenue after renaming it Iran Avenue.

Significance of visit

Raisi’s visit to Pakistan had been in doubt as Middle East tensions rose after Iran launched an unprecedented missile and drone attack on Israel more than a week ago in retaliation for an airstrike on the Iranian consular building in Damascus earlier this month. Then, on Friday, central Iran received what was presumed to be an Israeli attack.

Tehran has played down the apparent Israeli attack and indicated it had no plans for retaliation, a response that appeared gauged towards keeping the conflict in Gaza from expanding to a regionwide conflict.

{try{this.style.height=this.contentWindow.document.body.scrollHeight+'px';}catch{}}, 100)" width="100%" frameborder="0" scrolling="no" style="height:400px;position:relative" src="https://www.dawn.com/news/card/1828325" sandbox="allow-same-origin allow-scripts allow-popups allow-modals allow-forms">

Pakistan has called on all parties in the Middle East to “exercise utmost restraint and move towards de-escalation”.

Raisi’s visit is also significant as Pakistan and Iran seek to mend ties after tit-for-tat missile strikes in January. The cross-border strikes stoked regional tensions already inflamed by Israel’s military offensive in Gaza.

Tehran carried out the strikes against an anti-Iran group in Pakistan the same week it targeted Iraq and Syria. Pakistan responded with a raid on “militant targets” in Sistan-Balochistan province. Both countries have accused each other of sheltering militants in the past.

Pakistan is also counting on a joint gas project with Iran to solve a long-running power crisis that has sapped its economic growth.

A $7.5 billion Iran-Pakistan gas pipeline intended to feed Pakistani power plants was inaugurated with great fanfare in March 2013. However, the project immediately stagnated following international sanctions on Iran.

Tehran has built its own section of the 1,800-kilometre pipeline, which should eventually link its South Pars gas fields to Nawabshah.

In February, the outgoing caretaker government in Pakistan approved the construction of an 80km section of the pipeline, primarily to avoid the payment of billions of dollars in penalties to Iran due to years of delays.

Washington has warned that Pakistan could face US sanctions, saying it does not support the pipeline going forward.
