IRELAND - A WHISKEY LOVER'S PARADISE!

Book an experience, private whiskey tours, golf & whiskey, private whiskey tastings, looking to book a bespoke experience, unique tours & tastings at all of ireland's whiskey distilleries, ireland - the world's hottest new whiskey destination.

In 2024, there are over 70 distilleries and brand homes on the island of Ireland. Many are open, the rest are work-in-progress. Most of these ‘whiskey stops’ are fully operational distilleries and they are dotted all over the country, often taking you off the beaten tourism path.

Whiskey Island has access to all of these whiskey stops. We operate as a full-service whiskey tour company and we create and operate bespoke whiskey trails for our guests. We carefully blend (pun intended!) a selection of memorable whiskey experiences on our trails with the best of Ireland along the way.

WHISKEY TRAILS

View all trails, dublin’s distillery trail, jameson & guinness dublin trail, the dublin whiskey story, ireland’s hidden heartlands, boyne valley whiskey trail, northern ireland whiskey trail – 2 day, ireland’s ancient east trail – 3 day.

Meet John and John (Junior & Senior). We’re a father and son duo and we both have a wealth of experience between us, especially in the whiskey tourism domain.

We share the same pride in this country and we have a particular grá (Gaelic for love) for Irish whiskey tourism, an industry that has been good to us over our combined 40 years’ experience. We’re glad to say our name is synonymous with premium whiskey experiences in Irish tourism circles, so much so that we formed Whiskey Island.

20 Irish Whiskey Distillery Tours You Should Consider for Your Trip to Ireland

My first tour of an Irish whiskey distillery was Bushmills in County Antrim.

It was a blustery day in November. Snow was spitting from the sky and I was wrapped up in my Big Bird yellow jacket.

ireland distillery tour

Instead of swinging on the Carrick-a-Rede Rope Bridge, we opted to get out of the weather and try a bit of Irish whiskey (a very good decision I’d say).

As we collected our tickets for the tour and began exploring the Bushmills memorabilia in the large entrance hall, the lovely hostess asked if I wanted a hot toddy.

If I wasn’t warmed up already, I certainly was by the time my drink was done. Perfectly hot whiskey, water, honey, cinnamon and clove.

Irish Whiskey Distillery Hot Toddy

Even though we don’t drink too much, I am tempted to make some for the holidays this year. I don’t think Joe would mind. :-)

In 2017 we went to the Dingle Distillery–so you’d think I’ve had enough. But I’m already working on our plans for our next trip to Ireland, and I am definitely planning another tour.

Thinking that we’ll do something a little less well-known, I am loving the sound of Pearse Lyons Distillery in Dublin.

Housed in St. James church, the tour includes the traditional Irish whiskey distillery bit, but also history/tour of the church and cemetery.

Sounds right up my alley.

20 Irish Whiskey Distillery Tours

Earlier this year, I put together a list of breweries that you can tour in Ireland. It’s become quite a popular reference, so I thought a distillery tour list was due.

You should know that the Irish whiskey business is booming (so book ahead to guarantee your spot).

How Much Does It Cost? Part II: Accommodations in Ireland

20!! Wow I’ve got a ways to go. We have done Jameson in Midleton (twice ?), Kilbeggan and Tullamore. We tried to do Bushmills but the day we were there very high winds prevented tours because slate tiles were being blown off the roof—too dangerous!! However, at the reception desk they did give us a nice small bottle of Bushmills since we couldn’t do the tour. I obviously need to put a few of these on my itinerary for 2018!! ?

I know! I’ve got a ways to go to! 2 down 18 to go. Haha! There are quite a few that are at the top of my list. I’m wondering how long it will take me to get to ’em (and how many new ones will open up in the next few years!).

Well that was nice that Bushmills at least gave you a little parting glass. :-)

My wife and I toured both Jamison’s in Midleton and Kilbeggan. Both were good tours, Jamison’s was guided and Kilbeggan’s was self-guided. We also visited the tasting room/store for Tullimore D.E.W. but not the distillery itself. I agree that even if you are not a whiskey drinker, taking a distillery tour is lots of fun. On my 2018 trip I’ll be over-nighting in Midleton and will visit the store even if I don’t take the tour,.

They really are a lot of fun. Just learning about the process and the stories of each distillery (which often is more about the people and the community than it is about the whiskey itself) is worth the price of admission without the gratis drink at the end. Enjoy your time in Midleton! So much to see in that area that many miss. I bet you’ll love it!

Go to Tullamore. Made outside of Tullamore for years, they have returned their operations to their town of origin. Great whiskey and a very good tour. The town of Tullamore is probably worth a stop for some of its pubs. Not a long drive out of Dublin if you’re looking for an easy day trip.

Love this Lee! I’ve had so many of my one-on-one clients go to Tullamore and say the same thing. It’s high on my list to visit!

I would think the best distillery tours and tastings are in the small independent distilleries. Many of the Irish distilleries are owned by big international companies and lack the charm of the local independents. Similar to visiting distilleries in Scotland, the best ones are the small ones that do everything in house on a small scale. I’m interested in your list because a lot of these are not ones you here about.

I couldn’t agree with you more Mark. I love, love, love small and intimate experiences. The guides aren’t typically hired to just do the tour–they are usually involved with the actual process. This is true for lots of experiences in Ireland I think.

I am really intrigued by Nephin Distillery–while they’re just getting up and going, the strong community vibe and the hospitality of the owners really seems to shine through in the website.

Glad to hear the list was helpful!! :-)

Thank you for compiling this list. My husband works at a distillery here in the States, and I have just discovered that balancing our Ireland trips between hill-walking and distilleries makes us both happy. A gin distillery we hope to visit this year is http://thebearadistillery.ie/our-story/ in Castletownbere.

My husband took the day long Irish Whiskey Academy class at Midleton last year and learned so much from it. It is not cheap, but for a deep dive into understanding the science and chemistry of distilling, it was well worth the cost.

Welcome Susan! I am hope it’s helpful. :-) That distillery looks great! I’ll have to add it to the list. Thank you!!

I have heard nothing but absolutely wonderful things about all the tours Midleton does. That one is still on our bucket list, but we love Cork so I don’t think it will be on there long. :-)

We are planning a trip in May 2020 and would love to do dinner distillery tours. Of course Jameson, but would also like to do Teelling, Bushmills and Tulamore DEW. Thanks for the great info!

Welcome Suzie!! I think you’ll love them. I’d put a plug in for Pearse Lyons or Kilbeggan too! They are fantastically atmospheric and historic.

Great list, Planning a whiskey run to Ireland in May and just browsing to see the various ones. You have a great list.

will watch it carefully.

If you haven’t done it yet, the Whiskey Museum in Dublin is fascinating. It talks about different types of Irish whiskey, where they came from, and how they’ve survived the decades. Plus…samples!

What's The Buzz

Patrick Fox was a great guide and so informative! He was very knowledgeable on the whiskey we had and my husband liked his overall personality. I liked he didn’t mind we were a bit behind because of traffic. Would do this again next visit to Dublin! Highly recommend

An absolute pleasure to hear Derek share his vast knowledge of Irish Whisky. On top of his many interesting facts and insights, he is a charismatic and friendly human with a great sense of humour. A huge recommendation to try his tour.

We booked the classic whiskey tasting at the Swan Bar for my husband, my 19 year old son and myself. We were so glad we did, it was one of the best experiences of our entire trip! Derek is incredibly knowledgeable and fun, we felt we were sharing cocktails with a friend. We are whiskey novices and learned so much! It was a truly great time, and the Swan Bar was beautiful and welcoming. Just book it! You’ll love it!

I recently had the pleasure of visiting a renowned whiskey tasting experience in Dublin with a group of friends, and I must say it was an unforgettable journey into the world of whiskey. Our guide, Derek, proved to be an exceptional source of knowledge and made the entire experience truly exceptional. If you're a whiskey lover, this is an absolute must-visit destination in Dublin.

Derek’s whiskey tasting was a highlight of our trip to Dublin. He was flexible with scheduling and selected whiskey at multiple price points, including some very accessible, and affordable options (a rarity at some tastings). His interactive and conversational style ensured all of our questions were answered. His passion for his work is evident, and he’s only matched by his enthusiasm. Highly recommend.

Won't find a better Whiskey Tasting Experience. Had a wonderful night in M.P. Walsh, where Derek ran through some cracking irish whiskeys, gained a great insight into some old reliable and new emerging irish whiskies. Derek's knowledge was excellent, you would find it hard to beat Experience Irish Whiskey when it comes to having a fun night tasting the best Ireland has to offer in terms of whiskey.

Highly Recommended!! Derek is an amazing host with a crazy amount of knowledge and great delivery. He took us on a journey through Irish Whiskey with a particular emphasis on new emerging exciting Irish whiskey. He has a true passion for Irish Whiskey and the people behind the bottles which comes across throughout. A really great experience with a genuinely lovely guy. BOOK NOW!

Wonderful experience, a must for anyone visiting Ireland The experience was exceptional as Derek hosted us in a very authentic Irish pub and was extremely knowledgeable about whiskey. It was also great to be able to speak generally with a local about all things Ireland / Dublin. I would highly recommend for any visitor to Ireland.

Whether you’re a whiskey lover or not, the Irish whiskey experience is a great activity to do in Dublin alone or with a group of friends. The host, Derek, was very friendly and welcoming, making the whole experience even better. You can learn a lot about whiskey history and try whiskey from different Irish brands.

I have done 2 tasting with Derek now and both have left me in awe. 1st was through The Village Whiskey Society and the knowledge he passed on to us was amazing. The overall set up was great and he was more than happy to entertain any questions (stupid or not lol) the whole group loved it. 2nd was for a friend's Stag. Derek was more than accommodating. We had a small group of whiskey and non whiskey drinkers. By the end of it he had educated and converted the non whiskey drinkers all while keeping everyone engaged and entertained. I can't wait for the next tasting.

Derek looked after my group when we visited Dublin just a few weeks ago in January. We were honestly blown away by his Irish Whiskey knowledge, enthusiasm, attention to detail and his professional but relaxed manner. We booked a tasting experience with him based on a solid recommendation from a friend and I can honestly say that it was even more enjoyable (and tasty) than expected. When I’m back in Dublin with another group, we would love to see Derek again. 100% would recommend Experience Irish Whiskey 🥃 Sláinte 🥃

A great evening spent with Derek as he explained the world of irish whiskey. He is a knowledgeable and passionate speaker on all things Whiskey. Would definitely recommend this experience if you are looking for an authentic irish whiskey experience 🥃🥃

Derek is such an incredible guide! He knows so much about whiskey, has a passion for it, and is really great at explaining things to less knowledgeable people. The tasting took place in a heritage pub in Dublin, and we all really enjoyed the experience and the setting! If you have a couple of hours, want to have fun, and also get a good understanding of this popular Irish drink, then search no further! This is a must do for you!

Stephanie O

From start to finish Derek was energetic and had a wealth of whiskey knowledge like no one i have met before. I have been to a number of whiskey tasting experiences in the past but none come close. Derek has pure passion for whiskey and brings you through the whiskey story connected to each brand but also adds in some history. Highly recommend for anyone interested in having a real whiskey experience.

We take our whiskey seriously in Ireland. We break it out at celebrations and funerals, on cold winter nights and as a “cure” for any ailment you can imagine. But what makes this beloved spirit unique?

Simply put, Irish whiskey cannot be made anywhere else. Our  mild maritime climate impacts evaporation as the whiskey matures and interacts with the cask, creating a truly distinct beverage. And in order for the spirit to be sold as authentic Irish whiskey, it must have gone through the distilling and maturing process wholly in a distillery on the island of Ireland. Which brings us to those distilleries.

As John Callely of Whiskey Island puts it: “No two distilleries are the same. There are farm distilleries, there are island distilleries, there are distilleries in the middle of town and distilleries totally off the beaten track”. Each has its own approach to making Irish whiskey, he says, but what unites them is the knowledge and passion of the people who work there.

Want to learn more about the art of Irish whiskey? Start with these amazing distillery tours.

Jameson Distillery, County Cork

The field-to-glass process is a term you’ll hear a lot when it comes to whiskey distilleries, and the Jameson Distillery is no exception. Your tour guide will explain how ingredients are sourced and talk you through the distillation process as you let your senses take in the aroma of the whiskey-filled oak casks. Jameson Distillery is home to the world’s largest pot still, and the level of confidence in their whiskey is just as impressive. When your tour ends with a taste test – Jameson whiskey alongside two others – they’re in no doubt which one you’ll like best! Tours here range from the standard distillery experience to the Distiller’s Apprentice, which offers a behind the scenes look at the business of producing great whiskey.

whiskey-distillery-tours-bushmills-image1

Bushmills Distillery, County Antrim

It’s the world’s oldest licenced whiskey distillery (with records going back to 1608). It’s the oldest working distillery on the island of Ireland. And the Old Bushmills Distillery is also one of the few distilleries in the world to distil, blend and bottle its whiskey under the same roof. Bushmills produces whiskey that is firmly rooted in place – made with water drawn from the River Bush, which flows over the basalt rocks of the famous Causeway Coast . You can learn about the long history of this famous distillery as you take in either the Bushmills Distillery Tour or the premium Tour and Tasting.

whiskey-distillery-tours-hinch

Hinch Distillery, County Down

Hinch Distillery produces its fine range of triple distilled whiskeys on the beautiful Killaney Estate near the Mourne Mountains . But for visitors, what’s even more impressive is the purpose-built distillery building that allows you access to every aspect of the distillation process. Follow your tour guide through the ingredients room, into the mash house, the still house (the copper pot stills are named after local mountains; Donard, Croob and Wee Binnian) and the spectrum room, before finishing your tour in the bespoke tasting area where you get to sample some superb whiskey.

whiskey-distillery-tours-teeling-image1

Teeling Whiskey Distillery, County Dublin

Teeling Distillery is where whiskey spirit meets family spirit. The first Teeling Distillery was set up in 1782 and the craft has been passed down through the generations. Jack and Stephen Teeling opened this new award-winning Teeling Distillery in 2015 just down the road from the original distillery site in The Liberties . Jack even named the pot stills after his three daughters, and you can spot them during your interactive distillery tour. If you’re looking for something really special, try the Bottle Your Own experience – yes, you’ve guessed it. You get to fill a bottle of Teeling Whiskey directly from the cask as a memento of your visit.

Another family affair, Micil Distillery was named in honour of this whiskey-crafting family’s great great great grandfather Micil Mac Chearra. Six generations and 170 years later, they’re still distilling spirits using family recipes, craft, knowledge and time-honoured techniques. Micil started his whiskey journey on the Connemara hillside, but in 2016 Micil Distillery became the first legal distillery in Galway in over 100 years. The distillery offers a range of tours, from the whiskey experience to the cocktail masterclass and also offers private tours.

whiskey-distillery-tours-shutterstock-powerscourt-image1

Powerscourt Distillery, County Wicklow © Shutterstock

This distillery on the grounds of the magnificent Powerscourt Estate is home to Fercullen Irish whiskey and is a delightful blend of old and new. Pass through the old stone entrance building and you’ll find yourself in the ultra-modern distillery where the serious business of whiskey distilling takes place. But for all the contemporary sheen, the team here still relies on tried and tested traditional methods. Tours will take you through the distillation process and end with a whiskey tasting. A great option for foodies is the tour and food-paired whiskey tasting. Not only do you get to sample the spirits, but you also have the chance to taste some of the local artisan products such as farmhouse cheeses and charcuterie.

whiskey-distillery-tours-echlinville-image1

Echlinville Distillery, County Down

Nestled in the drumlins of Ireland's northeast, the Echlinville Distillery has made its mark as the producer of the award-winning Dunville’s Irish Whiskey. This is a true field-to-glass distillery. The owners have farmed this land for generations and grow their own barley, which is malted and used to create their range of spirits. The distillery will bring you along on this journey with a selection of tours ranging from the Tour and Tipple experience to food pairing tours to private and group tours.

8. Waterford Distillery , County Waterford

In Waterford city , on the banks of the River Suir, you’ll find the Waterford Distillery – the world’s largest producer of organic and biodynamic whiskies. It’s all about terroir here – a term that encompasses the mysterious interactions of plant, soil, site and microclimate. This is what controls the flavour of the barley and it’s why this distillery has developed sophisticated technology to distil its whiskey using the finest grain from over 40 farms in Ireland’s south east. Take the Terroir Tour and all will be revealed.

Weathering has reduced them to 527m, but whether you take on the long-distance Slieve Bloom Way or opt for one of the shorter looped trails, you'll be rewarded by spectacular views stretching across the midlands of Ireland, and on a clear cloud free day you can see the four highest points of each of Ireland's four provinces.

Bike or hike - these unspoilt and uncongested trails are truly one of Offaly's Hidden Gems.

Clonmacnoise

Clonmacnoise

This sixth century monastic site, located on the banks of the River Shannon is home to three high crosses, a cathedral, seven churches and two round towers.

This great monastery was founded in 548-9 by St. Ciarán Mac a tSaor (“son of the carpenter”), who studied under St. Finian at the famous Clonard Abbey in County Meath.

The strategic location of the monastery at a crossroads between the major east-west land route through the bogs of central Ireland and the River Shannon, helped it become a major centre of religion, learning, craftsmanship and trade by the 9th century.

Irish whiskey, "Uisce Betha" in traditional Gaelic (meaning water of life) has been distilled on the fair isle of Ireland since the middle ages . It was once the most popular spirit in the world with Dublin alone producing over 10 million gallons per annum. Although a decline in the early 1900s forced the closure of most of the great whiskey distilleries of Ireland a massive resurgence in popularity in modern times has allowed some to reopen and even more new distilleries to flourish. Today you can tour many of these wonderful Irish Whiskey distilleries and hear how this fine Irish "aqua vitae" is produced and of course sample some of its rare and wonderful flavours.

Visiting The Midleton Distillery In Cork (Ireland’s Largest Whiskey Distillery)

By Author Johnny Friel

Visiting The Midleton Distillery In Cork (Ireland’s Largest Whiskey Distillery)

The Midleton Distillery in Cork is one of the best known whiskey distilleries in Ireland .

Jameson Whiskey is emblematic of every Irish pub, with the drink being so special that it even comes from the Gaelic word “uisge beatha” meaning “water of life”.

A trip to the Jameson Distillery in Midleton offers visitors the chance to discover how Irish whiskey is made along with offering an insight into the story behind one of Ireland’s most famous distilleries.

In the guide below, you’ll discover everything from what the Midleton Distillery tour involves and how much it costs to what to do nearby and more.

Table of Contents

Some quick need-to-knows before visiting the Midleton Distillery

jameson distillery in midleton

Photos via Jameson Distillery Midleton on Instagram

Although a visit to the Jameson Distillery in Midleton is fairly straightforward, there are a few need-to-knows that’ll make your visit that bit more enjoyable.

1. Location

You’ll find the the Jameson Distillery in Midleton in Cork. It’s a handy, 23-minute spin away, which means you can easily pair a visit with some of the other worthwhile things to do in Cork City .

2. Getting there from Cork City

There is a bus service that runs every 30 minutes from Cork bus station to Cork Parnell place bus station ( which drops you right outside the brewery). There are also regular trains from Cork’s Kent station to Midleton, too.

3. Home to the most expensive Irish whisky

You can find bottles of whiskey at the Midleton Distillery that were distilled as far back as 1974 and cost a staggering €35,000 each, making them the most expensive Irish whisky in the world. The Old Midleton Distillery closed down back in 1975 , so these whiskey bottles are extra rare.

4. The Jameson link

Back in 1966, the Cork Distillers Company joined with their city rivals, John Jameson & Son and John Power & Son, forming the Irish Distillers Group. The newly formed company decided to build a new all-purpose distillery in Midleton, closing the old Midleton Distillery in 1975 and moving production to the New Midleton distillery that was built right next to it.

The history of the Midleton Distillery in Cork

Old Midleton Distillery

Photos via Jameson Distillery Midleton (Website & Instagram)

Back in 1825, the Murphy brothers, James, Daniel and Jeremiah, converted an old woolen mill into what we now know as the Old Midleton Distillery.

Part of this building can be visited on the Midleton Distillery Tour (more on the tour in a moment!).

A tasty proof of concept

5 years later and the Old Midleton distillery had produced 400k proof gallons and they had 200 workers. But the sales of Irish whiskey was to sharply decline due to Anglo-Irish trade wars and the rise of blended whiskeys.

By 1966, there were only three surviving distilleries in Ireland so John Jameson & Son joined forces with rivals John Powers & Son, creating the Irish Distillers company.

This amalgamation resulted in the closing of the Old Midleton Distillery in 1975 and the closing of poorly located distilleries in Dublin.

The result was that all production moved to Midleton and the company opening what we know as the New Midleton Distillery. The old Midleton distillery was turned into a visitor center and is home to the world’s largest pot still of 31,618 gallons.

The Midleton Distillery Tour

Visiting the Jameson Distillery Midleton

The Midleton Distillery Tour is arguably one of the best things to do in Cork when it’s raining (especially if you’re visiting Cork City, as the distillery is a short spin away).

The tour of the Jameson Distillery in Midleton is pretty straightforward, and the reviews online are excellent. Here’s everything you need to know.

1. What’s involved

The Midleton Distillery Tour is a fully guided tour that starts off at the Old Midleton Distillery where you can see where all the magic was first created as well as learn stories about Jameson’s rich heritage. It’s also fascinating to learn about those that worked at the distillery and the field-to-glass processes.

Your guide then takes you around some of the key buildings such as the warehouses and the microdistillery. The whole distillery is set over 15 acres and the setup is impressive to say the least.

2. How long it takes

The Midleton Distillery Tour takes around 75 minutes when you do the guided tour, this includes a short film about the history from its establishment right up to present day. Group sizes are limited to up to 15 people currently and kids are welcome but must be accompanied by an adult.

3. How much the tour costs

The tour costs €30 for adults and it’s worth booking it online in advance (affiliate link – cheers if you book through it as you’re helping to keep this site alive).

Things to do near the Jameson Distillery in Midleton

One of the beauties of Jameson Distillery in Midleton is that it’s a short spin away from a clatter of other attractions (there’s lots of things to do in Midleton ).

Below, you’ll find a handful of things to see and do a stone’s throw from the Old Midleton Distillery (plus places to eat and where to grab a post-adventure pint!).

1. Ballycotton Cliff Walk

The Ballycotton Cliff Walk (Cork)

The Ballycotton Cliff Walk is a non-looped, 7.4 km trail that’s loved by tourists and locals alike. It can get windy so do prepare in advance with good grip shoes. Close to the parking area are picnic tables and you’ll be treated to glorious coastal views along the way.

2. Roches Point Lighthouse

Located at the entrance of Cork Harbour is the landmark Roches Point Lighthouse . First established on the 4th June 1817 to help guide ships into the harbour, it was ultimately replaced with a larger tower because it was deemed too small back in 1835. You can climb the top of the lighthouse and get some amazing views from the balcony.

The cute, colourful village of Cobh is best known as the last port of call to the Titanic and the Titanic Experience attracts tonnes for visitors every year. There’s plenty of other things to do in Cobh , like Spike Island and a number of walking trails.

4. Cork City

cork city walks

Cork city is under 30 minutes from Midleton so you might as well pop in for something to eat. If you love food, the English Market is the go-to spot (although there are lots of great restaurants in Cork City ). For a bit of history, Cork City Gaol will give you an insight into prisoner life over 100 years ago. Cork is very walkable so you could easily visit a number of landmark locations in a few hours.

Wow what a great day! wonderful experience, we enjoyed our tour and found out so much information about the irish whiskey produced at Teelings. The cocktails we had on our tasting experience were delicious, and such a unique way to show how the whiskey can be used. Afterwards we got a drink at the bar and met the friendly bartender Denis, who was so helpful and well informed, and gave us his personal recommendations, such a great handsome young guy, and great experience all round! Kudos to the fabulous staff.
Teeling is a beautiful distillery. The tour gives a lot of history and information. The tasting is great and highly worth it. Definitely worth the trip.
Marc was our tour guide and did a great job! Very knowledgeable and entertaining! Learning the story of Teeling and Irish whisky was entertaining and enlightening. With Marc as your guide, you will have a good tour!

Granted a license to distill in 1608, Bushmills is the oldest licensed whiskey distillery in the world.

Along the north coast of Ireland, where arctic storms rage against the jagged cliffs and where the crisp waters of the River Bush cut through volcanic rock, generations have passed down an ancient distilling tradition.

Discover our craft

For over 400 years, we've carried on an ancient whiskey tradition. Generations have passed down a handcrafted art, triple-distilling our “smooth and mellow” whiskeys.

Visit us today, just a few miles from Ireland’s rugged north coast, and see how we continue to triple distill 100% malted barley in copper pot stills to make a pure malt whiskey.

See The Book Of Kells At The Trinity College Library

The Library of Trinity College in Dublin is one of the oldest libraries in Ireland and nothing will make time fly by quicker than the dark aisles of its 16th-century reading halls. The library has over 7,000,000 volumes of books on its shelves but if there's one thing that visitors must see, it's the Book of Kells -- the four Latin Gospel manuscripts dating back to the 9th century. No matter the time of the year, the library always has at least one volume on display for the public to see.

Catch A Hop-On Hop-Off Bus Tour

Flights can get pretty darn tiring. Oftentimes, there's very little energy left for anything exciting on a layover, let alone exploring an entirely new city . In that case, hop-on hop-off bus tours offer visitors an excellent means through which to see Dublin without much physical exertion on their part. Simply catch an open-top double-decker bus, grab a seat in a corner, and watch Dublin's top attractions pass by as you listen to audio guides for context.

Get A Taste Of Irish Food

What better way to spend a layover in Dublin than to eat your way through the Irish capital? Food blogger Ketty Quigley's Delicious Dublin Tours take visitors on a three-hour walking trip around the city with stops at plenty of famous eateries in between. As local experts tell tales of Dublin's food history, visitors will not only taste the best of local Irish food, but they will also learn of its past and present. These tours operate regardless of the weather in the notoriously temperamental capital.

Hop Onto A Viking Splash Tour

Long layovers in Dublin are one thing if you're alone or in the company of a fellow adult, but finding entertainment can be a far more tedious task when traveling with kids. A Viking Splash Tour is an excellent adrenaline-filled activity -- and an incredibly unique one at that -- for both adults and kids to take part in when in Dublin. The tours take place on a restored World War II amphibious vehicle that functions much like a bus on the roads but transforms into a boat as it mightily glides into the Grand Canal Dock, splashing passengers on board with the cold waters of the canal.

Drink At Temple Bar

What visit to Ireland is complete without a proper pint of Guinness? Head to the place that does it best, and arguably the most famous bar in not only Dublin but all of Ireland: Temple Bar Pub. Not to be confused with the neighborhood that is called Temple Bar, Temple Bar Pub is an infamous landmark pub with the traditional bright red exterior, welcoming you in to have a pint or two.

In 1922, Dublin Castle was given to the Irish government, where it now serves as a popular tourist hotspot. Also known as Chester Beatty Library, this museum is home to the collections of Sir Chester Alfred Beatty, a philanthropist and mining magnate who was given the title "King of Copper" due to his fortune. The collections at Chester Beatty include but are not limited to Arabic treatises on religion, Western manuscripts, pieces from Persian poets, and even Japanese art.

Looking to get a little shopping in on your long layover in Dublin? George's Street Arcade is one of the best places in the city of Dublin to do so. Centrally located close to other major tourist spots, George's Street Arcade has shops ranging from Brazilian-made fashion at Carnaval to Mystic Ireland Crystals. Take A Guinness Brewery Tour

Back to booze because, hey, it is Ireland, after all. Aside from Irish whiskey, the most popular alcoholic beverage in Ireland is Guinness. The Irish take their Guinness seriously. There's a craft behind pouring each one which amplifies the overall taste. If you're curious to know the art behind this extremely popular beer, head to the Guinness Brewery for a tour.

Who doesn't love a good Irish folk band? While you are bound to find live music at pretty much any pub in the city, Whelan's is one of the best. You can check out their calendar on their website to see who's playing, and it's recommended to book a table in advance since this place quickly fills up. Drink High Tea On A Vintage Bus

Cross Ha'Penny Bridge

The Ha'Penny Bridge is a pedestrian bridge located in central Dublin. It was built in May 1816 over the River Liffey and remains a popular tourist attraction to this date. Its central location is close to the popular Temple Bar neighborhood, and the best part about ticking Ha'Penny Bridge off of your bucket list during a short layover is that it's only going to take a few minutes to see it.

Free Walking Tour

One of the best ways to quickly explore any city while learning a bit about its history is by taking a free walking tour . Explore Dublin by foot, see plenty of major tourist hot spots, and learn the history through a local tour guide, all for zero cost. The tour is offered several times a day, meaning it's likely you can fit it into your Dublin layover regardless of what time you land.
